I'm listening to Claire Teal on BBC Radio 2 right now. After that I don't know what I will listen to. Perhaps th 1920s Radio Network Live Stream. I have an all staff meeting at 9am and then it's the McKnight Foundation.

We saw The Letter last night. Hedda Lettuce was in fine form. There was a group of young (18-19) NYU students in the audience. Their RA brought them as a Dorm Event. Most of them had never heard of Bette Davis! Oy, how to feel old in one easy lesson. The Letter was lots of fun. A silly, code-induced 1940 vehicle (Bette done wrong and she has to pay for it). The audience enjoyed it and so did we.

I am all alone at 7:37 so I shall take my leave for the time being.

Calm, cold morning.  Time to Sugar for a walk since it's not pouring on us.  The winds were rough last night but so far no damage.   I'll have to check my mother's house this weekend.  Undoubtedly something leaked or blew down there.

Good morning, y'all!

We just got comments from the presenting PBS station for our film. It looks like there will be m ore than a little bloodletting in NY this weekend...more like major surgery. They liked it, but had LOTS of comments.

As DR MATTH wrote, Phyllis certainly screams a lot and has more of an edge than Noel did in the later seasons - although the scripts were edgier in the first season, more noir and grit.

Noel had played Lois in the Columbia serials and was a natural choice to return to the role when Phyllis left (there hadn't really been a firm commitment that there would be a second season, she had a "special needs" child that demanded her attention, and she signed on for THE JACK CARSON SHOW, which turned out to be sort of a flop).

Director Tommy Carr - who had worked with Noel on some serials - was pretty disappointed to lose Coates and gave Noel a hard time on the episodes that he filmed....he felt that as an actress she was...."limited."

Good morning, all! I slept until nearly 8 am, and I've been downloading CDs into my iTunes. My only real goals today are to hit the NYPL and get some work on THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER reports. I've booked the hotel for DC next week, and I look forward to the trip. I need to spend some time today as well going through the Herbert Collection finding guide to determine what I need to look over so the Library has it in advance.

My neighbor has company again; lots of footsteps between 11:25 and midnight.

TOD:
DVD: I have got to get to those Netflix items; I have no memory of what they are

Thanks for these stories, DR JRand. I've read a fair amount about the making of the series, but I had never heard some of this, and it's very interesting. Makes me want to go back and rewatch my DVDs. I may do that this weekend even though I've got season five of THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW sitting here unopened, and it'd love to see those again. Maybe I'll do both and take a break from movies for the weekend! We'll see.

With the telethon coming on tonight on the broadcast networks (and several cable channels), this will enable me to watch some of the TV I've got stored up on the DVR (see Friday Media Check below).

I noticed that CBS is showing MEDIUM at 10 after the telethon, but it's a repeat episode, not a new one.

Good morning, all. The day here in San Antonio is covered in a blanket of fog with a light drizzle to keep it from being too romantic. It got up into the 70s yesterday, though, which was a blessing, though the allergens are still sweeping through the air and I remain heavily medicated to get me through the day.

TOD:
DVD: Foyle's War, Season 4

I know that this makes me really old, but back in my mid-20s, I recall being on the set of GAMBIT, watching MacLaine & Caine film a scene together.

I am not in the least happy about an email from ten minutes ago.  I should have known the resignation yesterday would blow up in my face, and I have the feeling I'm sittng on the edge of a Vesuvius at the moment. DR Jose---is there any hot chocolate in NY that is approaching the yumminess of City Bakery near Omni Berkshire? I am going to need some comfort, I am afeard....

Hmmm... Good question.  That stretch of Madison Avenue is very business, hotel and residence heavy.

You're right between the two ING Direct Cafés on the East Side - 49th & Madison, 58th & 3rd.  They have decent hot chocolate, but their main draw is the $2 Peet's Coffee.

You could head over to Rockefeller to Maison du Chocolat (http://www.lamaisonduchocolat.com/en/boutiques.php?id=13&a=30+Rockefeller++Center+-+NY+10020+New-York+newyork) for their hot chocolate which is pretty tasty.

FIKA Espresso Bar (http://www.fikanyc.com/) on 58th Street between 5th & 6th Avenues also has a good hot chocolate plus some good snacks, sandwiches and chocolates.

You could also walk down to one of the 'wichcraft (http://wichcraftnyc.com/locations-and-hours/) locations.  They have great hot chocolate, and usually feature some "special flavors".

I am not in the least happy about an email from ten minutes ago.  I should have known the resignation yesterday would blow up in my face, and I have the feeling I'm sittng on the edge of a Vesuvius at the moment. Perhaps everything will work itself out but I wish people would return their calls when you ask them to!

I just had a nice phone call with a realtor in my hometown; now, if I can only convice Macbeth and Randy to seriously listen to what he has to tell them. Hmmmm . . .

Sounds like your day is evening out, DR elmore.

The unpleasant situation will have much bad fallout, which was not my intention when I resigned. Dealing with the Macbeths is a pinch compared to the other.

Topic of the Day:

In my CD player here at work:  Pink Martini's "Splendor In the Grass" (I bought the UK release with a bonus DVD!).  Then, I'll listen to Harlequin Productions' 1997 original Olympia cast recording of A Rock & Roll Twelfth Night (http://castalbumcollector.com/recordings/12198) and after that will be the slightly renamed 2003 revival, A Rock 'n' Roll Twelfth Night (http://castalbumcollector.com/recordings/18847).  This second CD stars Louis Hobson, who is now performing on Broadway in Next To Normal!

Mt only bright spot today has been the laughs provided by "Football," a number for the Scarecrow and Tin Man (Montgomery & Stone) from THE WIZARD OF OZ:

Just bring along the ambulance and call the Red Cross Nurse
Then ring the undertaker up and make him bring a hearse
Have all the surgeons ready there for they'll have work today
Oh, can't you see the football teams are lining up to play
Football, Football, that's the game for me
Break his hip, hip hip hurrah
    Kick him in the knee
Soak him on the five yard line
    We must have him lame
Football, football, it's a gentle game

It is REALLY cold outside. I wore a heavy jacket and was still uncomfortable doing my errands. My feet still feel cold a bit, but since my office is the warmest room in the house, being up here a couple of hours should thaw them out.

Then I watched my work project for the day - PARIS, TEXAS on Blu-ray. A solid video and audio transfer, and the film is affecting despite its length. Yes, there are some scenes I would have cut, but it still plays OK. I always end the film, not thinking of Harry Dean Stanton and Nastasia Kinski but rather of Dean Stockwell and his wife's characters and how devastated they are back in L.A. and are going to have to handle their grief and loss.

As I was finishing up PARIS TEXAS, the doorbell rang. Yep, the UPS man brining me three Paramount TV box sets: VEGAS, DYNASTY, and the last season of J.A.G. I'm still going to take Saturday off and then I'll start on one of them on Sunday. I believe it's DYNASTY that comes out first: February 2nd and the other two come out a week later, February 9th. If that is how they fall, I'll start on DYNASTY on Sunday.

BTW, of those three, the only one I actually requested was J.A.G., but I'll go ahead and do them since I don't have anything else here. I am supposed to get Drew Barrymore's WHIP IT! next week, but who knows when it'll come in.

Hello, everyone.

I decided to stay at DF&H's house an extra day. I keep thinking that I haven't got much with me--just living out of a suitcase--but in reality I have a LOT more here than that. One doesn't go from pack rat to minimalist overnight. Packing always takes longer than I expect and I'm REALLY glad I have today to pack. I've been storing a lot of stuff in the basement here, and I spent the morning going through it. Some of it I will need at my new apartment; some of it I'll leave here a while longer. And since it's raining again it's best that we didn't move today.

During the night a large and lovely tree came down nearby. There's a cluster of trees that shade what used to be Frank Sinatra's home. This tree was one of them. It's really a shame, as you can't easily replace large trees. The "Sinatra house" has a garden that is truly to die for--it's an absolute paradise. It is also a shade garden and needs the nearby trees.

I slept through the incident. I didn't hear a thing until the chain saws started while I was trying to meditate. I will miss the tree.

Yes, the talk of those Universal DVD-Rs yesterday:

I haven't ordered yet, but I'm most anxious to get RESURRECTION, THE LIST OF ADRIAN MESSENGER, and GAMBIT. Interested to hear about their quality from those who get them first.

I know that this makes me really old, but back in my mid-20s, I recall being on the set of GAMBIT, watching MacLaine & Caine film a scene together.

Oh, back in YOUR mid-20s....not back in THE mid-20s.....(which, of course, would make you REALLY old).

The latest DIVA TALK (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/136146-DIVA-TALK-Paige-Champlin-Memphis-on-CD-Plus-News-of-Friedman-and-White) on Playbill.com mentions, among other recordings, Brent Barrett's Christmas CD!  Here's the specific paragraph:

Christmas may have already passed, but thanks to Brent Barrett's new holiday recording, the sounds of the season can linger throughout the year. Barrett, whose Broadway credits include Chicago and Annie Get Your Gun, recently released his third solo recording, which is his first to focus on holiday tunes. Entitled "Christmas Mornings," the single CD is available on the Kritzerland label. Barrett is in wonderful voice, and the joy of the season comes through on the disc's 12 tracks. In addition to such holiday favorites as "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" and "The Christmas Song," Barrett also wraps his lush lyric baritone around two new tunes: "A Star to Guide Me," which he co-wrote with Bernard Blanks and Barry Kleinbort, and "Christmas Mornings," penned by Blanks. Other highlights include a beautiful delivery of "O Holy Night," a wonderful pairing of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and "A Place Called Home," a gentle "White Christmas" and a duet of "Silent Night" with songwriter Blanks. The recording features musical direction and arrangements by Christopher Denny and orchestrations by Larry Moore.

I'm friggin' exhausted.  I did have a spot of lunch with Cason.  We went to the Studio Cafe.  I, of course, ordered us an appetizer of wings, and told our server all drumettes, as I've done for the last, oh, seventy times I've ordered the wings.  He told me they don't have drumettes and have never had drumettes.  I told him that I've had all drumettes there every time I've been there.  He went back to check with the chef and told us no drumettes and that they've never had them.  Since Cason has had them many times we just couldn't believe they were actually trying to say this.  I then told him to go talk to his manager to confirm we indeed have had them since the day they opened.  He said the manager was out.  Then he went back one more time to the kitchen and sheepishly came back to us to say that the chef admitted he had drumettes and always had.  He just thought wings meant a both things.  Yeah.  We got all drumettes and all was well with the world.

I could not agree with you more! That was THE MOST hideous thing I've seen come down the runway in many seasons, and not only did she not lose, she didn't even finish next-to-last. The judges have lost their minds, but I am SURE that because they liked what she did last week (I didn't), they gave her this one total botch job.

When I finally got back into the home theater, I began with last night's BURN NOTICE. A very enjoyable episode with a fun case-of-the-week, and another of the half season long stories that will inch its way to conclusion by season's end.

The heavily trumpeted reunion of Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless couldn't have been more anticlimactic. ANY DECENT ACTRESS could have played Ms. Daly's role as well as she did; it was not that much of a guest star part (which might be why she wasn't granted "special guest star" status).

Next up was PROJECT RUNWAY. I was flabbergasted by some of the beautiful and creative dresses that were produced for this challenge. This seems to be one of the strongest and most fashionable groups they've had in a long time. I saw three or four dresses in the safe group that I would have stacked up against the winner (which was also lovely).

I've already said most of the negative for the week in the previous message. I was certain that the next-to-last place finisher was going home. I'm glad this designer will have another week to show us something special.

Coates says that she didn't even realize that she had equal billing with Reeves on the series until she saw a broadcast and credits her agent with getting her that.  Neill's credit was combined with the other regulars on the second card.

Neill remembers that oftentimes if a set was not one of the standing ones - it would be put up on the day of filming - the scene would be shot - and the set dismantled to make room for another, usually using some of the same construction materials.  She said more than once, the paint hadn't even dried on the walls before they were on to another scene.  They shot 4 shows in 10 days for one month to make the season of 13 shows.  Who knows when the 13th show was shot - one of those weeks must have really been killer.

DR MATTH - although a lot of my Phyllis Coates info - and MUCH more - was included in Gary Grossman's great book SUPERMAN FROM SERIAL TO CEREAL.....the new book FLIGHTS OF FANTASY by Michael J. Hayde is the final word on the SUPERMAN on radio and television.

He also uncovered many stories and filming details.....it is a fascinating book.

Thanks. I will try to get a copy of it. I grew up with the show, so it will always hold a special place in my heart.

That's why the new book is so great....it's like discovering the show all over again.

That's what you said yesterday.

I was in the parking lot near the Barrett Jackson car auction several times today  (there was a gorgoeus yellow convertible Jaguar from the late 30's or early 40's there).  Of course, I'm thinking of driving through rain and taking Sugar for a walk and mentally running thorough a check list of bills I need to pay and what I need at the grocery store and I hear the auctiuoneer selling cars for $117,000 and more.   I had to quit listening when the bidding for one car was topping $135,000.  I have no idea what the cars were, and the "good" ones will go this weekend, but it was a far cry from me thinking I needed to buy toilet paper and paper towels and soup!  How much soup and toilet paper can I get for $135,000?

Well, I'll say it again.  ;)  I didn't have the chance (or maybe the inclination) to go to my mother's house tonight.

One good thing about that kind of shooting schedule is that it left you plenty of time to look for other work.

I hope the books clear up a discrepancy about the series' end. According to one interview I have on tape with Larson and Neill, they were slated to do another season with Reeves directing a good portion of the shows when his death was reported. (John Hamilton had died and was going to be replaced by Pierre Watkin who was also in the serials and guest starred on several episodes as other characters.) Other sources say the show was canceled and this was part of George's depression that may have led to his death.

Zach has been sick all day, so he and I channel surfed and then watched a movie, since Betsy and Gabe went to a Shabbat dinner.  We caught the end of the PROJECT RUNWAY everyone has been commenting on today.  Oy and double oy.  :)

Then we watched CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS.  Colorful and occasionally funny, but way too frenetic.  I may have known this at one time, but I was flabbergasted to see Marvin Hamlisch listed as a co-writer on Lesley Gore's "SUNSHINE AND LOLLIPOPS."

Actually, I finally got hooked up to the 'net so thanks for the travel vibes. I had a rough cab ride so it took awhile for my tummy to settle enough to have lunch, which was at about 5. While munch on slices of salmon on toast, my best friend called me to tell me she had just found out her younger brother suddenly passed away and she was on her way to Ohio. It was very shocking. I wish I was home so I could drive her up. I wish I could do something for her...

I came back and tried to work but couldn't concentrate so I went to TKTS and got a ticket to South Pacific. Now I will be up very late working but god it was worth it!

SPOILER!

Last night's Project Runway has me STUMPED!  I'm stumped, I tell you.  Stumped.

If anyone in his or her right mind can explain why Peng was allowed to stay and Pamelo was sent packing, then you're a better man (woman) than I am, Charlie Brown.

To borrow another designer's term for it, that "ass flap" should have been the final straw for Peng.

End SPOILER

See, my name is really

You must always call me

What I answer to is

Sew!
When you see it, you'll go
"Whoa!--
That's a terrifying
Thing!"

Furniture nomenclature department:

Maybe one of you in the office world (FJL? Cilla?) can guide me in terms of what a piece of furniture I need might be called.  If we close on this new house, I want to either donate or sell the old (waaaay old) "European" desk my sister gave me from her travels in Germany probably 30 years ago.  This desk has three shallow drawers right under the desktop plus a bunch of cubbyholes, etc.  Anyhoo, we have Betsy's "old" office desk downstairs, which is a beautiful oak modern thing that has only two deep drawers for hanging files, etc., but that's what I will use in my home office.  But that deprives me of all this additional storage space. So I want to buy some sort of thing with drawers and storage spaces that I would say is almost akin to an old desk-secretary or even an office version of a chest of drawers.  Is there a name for such an item?

Wikipedia on a credenza

Credenza desk
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Credenza_desk

A credenza desk
A credenza desk (often simply, credenza) is a modern desk form usually placed next to a wall as a secondary work surface to that of another desk, such as a pedestal desk, in a typical executive office. When used as an active work surface, the credenza desk is often placed against the wall immediately behind or perpendicular to the main desk, but close enough that the user can reach it from the seated position at the main desk by simply swiveling and wheeling his office chair over to it. When its planned use is to be less frequent, such as holding books or files which are not regularly referenced, or to act as an extra surface to help facilitate larger meetings, credenza desks are often placed on a wall in some other location of the office, such as adjacent to a conference table if one is present. Many conference rooms which have meeting tables but not desks will also have a credenza desk against one wall. The credenza desk is sometimes flat, like a pedestal desk, but more often than not it has a stack of shelves, small drawers and other nooks, above its main working surface. The sum of these overhead amenities is usually called a hutch. Hence, the credenza desk is often called a "credenza with hutch".
The credenza desk is often used as a computer desk, thus leaving the possibility of keeping the surface of the main desk completely free, when this is required. An executive desk is often the central artifact for a meeting between several persons. A computer monitor or a printer or even a simple keyboard on the surface can be impediments to the exchange.
The credenza desk is comparable in form to but differs from the armoire desk in that it is seen for the most part in large office buildings (instead of home offices, like the armoire desk) and most of its storage spaces are wide open.
Credenza desks are often, but not always, part of a matching set which can include pieces such as a primary desk, a conference table, a cabinet for a whiteboard, a book-shelf, filing cabinets, chairs, or other items of furniture which are likely to be found in an office environment.

Thanks to all who sent moving vibes.

Tonight I had a nice surprise for my last night here: my favorite neighbor came over for dinner. She's a British woman who, as it happens, worked at the Windmill Theater (MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS) during WWII. She has lots of stories.

DR edisaurus - Sorry we weren't able to connect on the Lincoln Center Plaza earlier tonight.  Our intermission most definitely did not coincide.  The structure of Boccanegra meant that after the 30-minute Prologue, they placed the first 30-minute intermission.  And then after Act 1, came the second intermission - so sometimes around 10:00.  The bows didn't even start until 11:30.  In any case...

I'm glad you got a chance to see South Pacific.
