Well, you've read the notes, the notes were savage and breast-like, and now it is time for you to post until the savage cows come home.

So...

Earlier tonight, I went to The Metropolitan Opera to see their current production of Verdi's Simon Boccanegra with Placido Domingo in the title role - singing a baritone role.  It was quite interesting to hear him sing a role that never came close to challenging the upper part of his range, but, all in all, the experiment(?) worked.  The rest of the cast was in very good voice tonight too, and James Levine and that orchestra really produced some beautiful sounds throughout.

As I mentioned earlier, it turned out that one of my former students and friend, Patrick Carfizzi, was singing "Paolo", the villain, in this production.  During the first intermission, I happened to run into his brother in the aisles, and so I was able to be added to "the list" to head backstage afterwards.  It was great getting to see Patrick again, as well as his brother Chris and his fiancée and future mother-in-law who had flown up from Ft. Lauderdale to see the opera.

I also got a kick out of watching all the women swoon over Placido Domingo, and Domingo just eating all that feminine attention right up.

Once we made it past the autograph and photograph seekers at the stage door, we headed across the street to Cafe Fiorello for some post-opera desserts.  Their "Double Bucket" Chocolate Mousse... WOW!

Oh! And as I was waiting, another former Catholic University student came out of the stage door.  I hadn't seen Joe in a while, and I had forgotten that he's in charge of the supernumeraries at The Met now.

Youze guys got it wrong, a credenza is an elaborate, ornamental melodic flourish interpolated into an aria or other vocal piece or
an extended virtuosic section for the soloist usually near the end of a movement of a concerto

DR MATTH - yes you are correct....Kellogg's held the options on everyone's contracts and another two seasons of SUPERMAN were ready to go.....they needed an additional 26 episodes, because the first season was going to be replaced in syndication because of its darker elements.

Reeves would direct 13 of the 26 - although no one is sure whether they would be filmed in one year or two, but production would begin in September, 1959 (with Pierre Watkin replacing John Hamilton).

There is a great picture of George Reeves with his new 1959 Pontiac convertible taken only 72 hours before his death.....he looks great.

Good morning!

I had an enjoyable walk this morning. The thermometer said 34, but it didn't feel that cold. It's still overcast, so maybe that had something to do with its not feeling so bone-chilling. I had a light jacket on, and I was comfortable.

Big news today are two specials airing tonight:

The Screen Actors Guild Awards will run for a couple of hours.

Also up is the ladies finals LIVE on the National Figure Skating Championships. I didn't see last year's winner Alissa Cizny listed in the top finishers in the short program. Is she there this year or is she injured?

Looking at the three vintage Paramount TV series that arrived yesterday, I see that DYNASTY will indeed be the first one I'll tackle starting tomorrow. I still plan to take today off.

I will likely watch the shows on the DVR and then Al Jolson's BIG BOY (since it's barely over an hour long).

TOD:

I never had a strange or bad job. In high school, I worked in my father's jewelry store in the summer. I'd wrap wedding gifts, deliver them when the stack grew too large, polish silver that hadn't yet sold: basically anything that kept me in the back of the store. I never liked selling out front and rarely did it.

In college during the summer, I worked in the proof and bookkeeping departments of a local bank. It was interesting work. Everything was done by hand in those days in terms of working with people's records, and one gained A LOT of private information about people by handling their checks and seeing their statements every day, who had plenty of money and who among the town's most prominent people were constantly overdrawing their accounts and having to be called individually by the supervisor so they could come to the bank with some money so their account wouldn't be overdrawn. Of course, we were absolutely bound to secrecy, and the place was also a morgue. The supervisor upstairs where the departments were (Mr. Hance) wouldn't allowing laughing or talking except about business matters. He considering people's money serious business and wouldn't allow anything like fun up there.

The only time I can remember talking while passing the time up there was when accounts were out of balance at the end of the day, and we'd all sit down at tables looking for the error in someone's listing. Sometimes it could be found within an hour. SOmetimes we'd be there until midnight trying to get the accounts to balance.

TOD:

The most offbeat job I ever had was the first one I got after arriving in Los Angeles in 1963.

I had a B.A., but employers were hesitant to hire me because I was new in town and they figured that I might not stay.

So, a friend of mine got me a job during the Christmas rush loading mailbags down at Union Station.

My fellow workers kept asking me, "You've got a college degree.  What the hell are you doing here?"

When I was in high school, I did a Benjamin Kritzer and sold magazines door-to-door.

I did okay, but then one day I was called down to the Asst. Principal's office to speak to a police officer.  It seems that the adult who was driving us kids around had just been arrested for rape.

After that, my folks made me quit.

My first job was fun.  I worked as a general dogsbody for a photographic studio in Cincinnati.  Did everything from run messages, make photostats, and set up displays.  We did a lot of work for Proctor & Gamble and Kenner toys, so I often knew about new products long before they hit the market.

Summers in college I worked in a textbook company, packing books as they came up the assembly line and stacking the boxes on skids.  Monotonous and mind-numbing, but kept me in shape.  It also taught me that I never wanted to do this sort of thing for a living.  There were people who had been there for thirty-forty years.  I would have gone crazy or blown my brains out.

The job that did this for me was working as a file clerk the summer between my freshman and sophomore years of college.  I filed business machine schematics by their 8-digit numbers all day, every day, and twiddled my thumbs when that was all caught up.  Not that I had any doubts, but it sure motivated me to go back and complete my degree!

Good morning, all! The events of the past copuple of days with the LoC concert and my dealings with my brothers about father's land in Ohio have brought on a huge depression that have kept me in bed all morning with no desire to move further. I am up, and I will bathe, dress, and spend the remainder of the day at the NYPL doing research I like rather than deal with the tsuris that my personal and professional life are currently in.

My worst jobs occurred during my Ohio life after grad school, 1972-1979, when the good jobs meant working in community theatre and symphony with wonderful people, teaching creative dramatics to kids between 5 and 15, all for no pay, and dealing with the frustrations of working for morons like the owner of Office Outfitters, perhaps my least finest hour as a delivery truck driver, while looking for a job that would allow me to do what I wanted with my life. If I had not been so obtuse to the universe, I would have realized it was saying get out of town now. The only good thing about the seven years is that when I finally moved to New York, I was ready to jump into a bigger pond.

What, no one reads the late-night posts?

I did, when I was drafting a letter to my brothers around 4:15 am this morning.

I do not understand their reluctance to bring a realtor into the property sale. If we each made $250-300,000 on the sale and paid a 6-12% commission to a realtor, we could earn that interest back in a high interest account. Since the land belonged to my dad and none of us paid for it, anything made on the sale is free money. I'd rather pay 12% commission on something and make 88% on it than to own 100% of nothng and have to pay taxes on it. Oy.

And this, kiddies, is why the Macbeths are so damned smart!

TOD: absolutely WORST job was an 8:30-5 every day position in the accounting department of Gulf Oil Company in Century City, CA when I was 19. Lasted a whole 5 months. I began to loathe going to sleep at night, because it meant the night would pass too quickly, and in the morning I would have to go there AGAIN... It cured me of ever again having a Normal job. I resolved that, if I couldn't live an artist's life. If I ever thought for one minute that I would have to do that again, I would cheerfully kill myself.

if the food had been the reason i couldn't eat much in the hospital i would have asked keith to get me something.  the 1st night after surgery i ordered canned peaches & found solid food hadn't been permitted yet.  i called the nurse who called the kitchen so i could have my big meal-lol.

DerBrucer may be home by now.  Woody is planning a special dinner to make up for the horrible hospital food that had to be endured. ;D

Horrible is not the word for it! Last night they served a grilled pork loin that was a dark shade of grey that even Woody couldn't cut. The sweet potatoes were an under seasoned overcooked glop - and there are lots of healthy eating spice/honey/nut  combos you can use to juice up sweet potatoes. With hot tea, they are happy to load you down with packets of  refined white sugar - but honey is a special order.

There was special cup of glop they really wanted you to eat, but admitted that most patients found it disgusting - minced prunes, raisins, dates and oat meal with a little applesauce - it was delicious!

Been away for a bit while DS Rob tried to set me up to scan with my printer that's supposed to have that capability.  Doesn't seem to want to work - oh, well.

Anyway, I'm glad to see that DR der Brucer was here.  Great to have you back!

Ginny, did you upgrade to Vista when it became available?  That was my problem.  I had to wait until the printer manufacturer created a new Vista driver to be able to scan again.

Trixie Belden and the Mystery of the Lesbian in the Credenza aka The Clock Ticked Loudly
My sisters had all of the Trixie Belden books and I know this was their very most favorite.

I think you should read it to the whole family!

Back from NYPL. I've got to start transcribng my notes soon. Perhaps tomorrow.

I had a lovely phone invitation from Bruce Pomahac that cheered me up a bit. I'm going to visit him around 5 and we'll have dinner and watch a movie. I accidentally ordered two copies of the DVD of the Jean Simmons film THE ACTRESS, based on Ruth Gordon's autobiographical play, so I'll give him one as a thank you gift.

DR JMK - we're a Mac household, but I think it's a similar problem.  It might be that I need to update to Snow Leopard.

TOD:

My worse job was working in the behind-the-store warehouse of Bascos when I was fresh out of high school.  Constantly unloading and stacking merchandise and running up and down the four-storied warehouse and retrieving orders.  It was summer, there was no a/c, my co-workers were disco-loving mooks and the pay stunk.  I lasted a month and quit.

My weirdest job was as a sales associate in the toy/doll department of Strawbridge and Clothier in Philly.  It was weird because I was introduced to the world of Madam Alexander dolls and the women who collected them.

Matt H, maybe because we didn’t read about the heavily trumpeted reunion of Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless we enjoyed it.  After the lead in to the character we laughed when Daly appeared.  For us it was fun seeing them together again.

I just felt it was nothing special. Even if I hadn't been aware of the CAGNEY AND LACEY connection, I didn't feel there was anything much to it.

I've done a little over ten pages.  I also got some breakfast earlier.  I actually only did about six pages of new writing.  The rest were quoting the Nudie reviews, starting with our two terrible reviews in the trades, followed by raves from practically everyone else around the country.  It's interesting to revisit these after all this time.  I also reprint in total an extraordinary telegram Cindy sent to Barry Diller when Paramount was trying to screw us.  I haven't seen this telegram since it was sent in April of 1976, but I found it in the Nudie Musical memorabilia box.

I watched CHUCK while I ate lunch. I was glad this was on the DVR since that way I could fast forward through all of the hopelessly stupid FIGHT CLUB/Buy More scenes. The spy stuff was absolutely great. Loved seeing Angie Harmon as a guest star and Brandon Routh joining the team was terrific. He is as gorgeous as ever, too. Three terrific looking men on this show + the wonderful nerdy-handsomeness of Zachery Levi. It's pretty special!

Then I watched SPARTACUS. Yep, it's gory, but the beefcake parade made it easy to just fast forward through anything that was too intense.

Yes, it's very reminiscent of '300,' but with that moaning singer on the soundtrack, it also reminded me quite a lot of TROY rather than GLADIATOR.

Tonight on Showtime is the premiere of TWILIGHT. No, I don't expect it's my kind of movie at all, but I'm anxious to see what all of the fuss was about with the first one before the second one comes out on disc. I won't get to it tomorrow since I'll be working on DYNASTY, but I'll have it for when I have a spare moment.

Sheena is doing fine.  I though I was going to have to give her up a couple of times but somehow something always happened that kept us together.

The house is livable but not what I wanted.  There is still a lot of work to do.

I sued Turner and won.

He still hasn't paid me anything so I have find a collection agent.

I turned him into the Fl Dept of Business and Pro Regs--they are VERY interested in him but they move like snails

I turned him in to the permitting Department and got his permitting privileges pulled in the City of Tampa, City of Plant City, City of Temple Terrace and the whole County.

I was on a local News Channel 3 times about my story.

Just a word of legal advice, BK.  Be sure you have the right to include correspondence that is not your own.  My understanding  is that correspondence that emanates from you (that you have written) belongs to you.  This would not necessarily apply to correspondence written by someone else sent to you or third party correspondence sent to another third party.

If fact, if you're doing a non-fiction piece, you might want to have a good lawyer vet it for anything that might be construed as "actionable".

The bad thing I'll never trust anyone as much again.

Turner had 30 years in the business.  Had a B on the BBB webpage, stated he was an "Angies List Award Winner" (not true as I came to find out) and seemed like a really nice guy.

As my lawyer pointed out, I had no reason to think that he would do what he did.

Well, one thing, I sure learned all the ins and outs of going after a contractor.  I think the thing that frustrated me the most was 45 days to respond to this, 30 days to respond to that.  And every time I thought I had him where I wanted him, something else blocked me.   He'd call the board or whoever and ask for more time.

I do think that trick is just about over.

It took a long time to get through to the FDBPR but the last letter I received from them made it clear that they are going to take a very good look at Mr. T.    I had sent their legal department those links to the news program as well as all of the other paperwork.

In the end, I think he WILL lose his license.  I got his permit privileges taken away from him already and as the guy from the FDBPR told me, "If he can't pull a permit, he won't need a license".

He will rue the day he ever messed with me.

I'm still unpacking and getting the house in order.  It's livable but I didn't get the extra room I wanted.  I don't have a washer or drier---I had a real problem with people stealing from me.

Someone broke in to the sheds and helped themselves to a lot of my things.  I still don't have an idea as to what all is missing.  I had my nicer things in a storage rental but not the washer and drier so they are gone.  Sigh.

Very good.  In fact, she had gotten into something (she had gotten away from me) and was very sick.  She didn't do anything on the carpet part of the hotel room.  Just the tile.

I was at an Extended Stay hotel so it was like having a little apartment.  And it was much cheeper then a "real" apartment".  Twenty dollars a night--which included the electric, the water, parking, tv/cable and (if I had a my lap top) wi fi internet.  There also was a laundry on site.

And it came with everything!  2 spoon, knifes, forks, plates, coffee maker, small fridge, cook top (no oven), they cleaned the sheets.  It was very nice but very small.

It did make me feel like this house is quite big!

Danise, who made your house livable? The crappy contractor? I'll be really glad to hear the whole story.

Hi Laura!
He did part of it but I found he did such a poor job that I just told him to stop.  I had to get the plumbing and bathroom finished by other people.

So far we are having a very positive experience with these sellers and their agent.  A couple of potential problems came up yesterday during the prelim inspection (we haven't gotten the report yet), and they've already more or less said they'll fix everything.  What a difference from the foreclosed property.  In the meantime, we've started perusing this showroom's offerings for new furniture:

http://portland.craigslist.org/search/fua?query=pacific+lifestyle+2123&catAbbreviation=fua&minAsk=min&maxAsk=max (http://portland.craigslist.org/search/fua?query=pacific+lifestyle+2123&catAbbreviation=fua&minAsk=min&maxAsk=max)

We are thinking of getting a sectional with ottoman for the living room, a new dining set, and a recliner-sofa, recliner-loveseat and recliner-recliner ;) for the big family room that has the giant tv hung on the fireplace.

speaking of pain ;)  i called the doctor for more pain meds & he switched me to a different pain med.  i told his nurse i was very concerned about switching as i don't wish to spend 4 hours over a toilet bowel.  i asked if the new med was a generic for something and she said no.  today the pharmacist said if i can't take percoset not to take the new meds.  i have a call to make on monday, glad i checked before filling.

apparently the meds i'm on are used after surgery & the new one for chronic pain so it makes sense to switch, i'm just scared too.  guess i'll have to go off of them soon ???

I spent the day at the office working on setting up a new way to keep my books.  I've sort of been ad hoc about it and decided to break down, buy the updated version of my software, actually learn how to use it and now I'm entering in all the data I didn't take the time to put in before.  It's a pain in the butt, but it looks like once I get it all done it will be very easy to keep up.   I have another day of inputting tomorrow and I should be there.  Whew!

I understand about the correspondence - I could, of course, just reference it and paraphrase, which is probably the safest way to do it, but there's nothing terrible in it other than Cindy castigating the then powers-that-be at Paramount, who, of course, deserved it and are now mostly dead.

I watched the women's short program when I went back down. The top three were the best three by far. And they showed some other notable skaters, too, which I was grateful for since some of these girls have been in the top group in years past and just bombed out in this year's short.

Our ladies, except for Rachel Flat, have been hideously inconsistent since the last Olympics. Many of them were teens and when that growth spurt hit, it totally threw them off their game and wrecked their skating.

Then I watched BIG BOY on the Warner Archive. It's the same transfer used in the Jolson laserdisc set which means the first half was pretty damaged and the last half looked pretty good. I'll be glad to retire that laserdisc set as soon as Warners releases MAMMY. It has been given a complete restoration, and we're just waiting for Warners to decide how to release it.

Then I tuned into the women's long program championships. Really mediocre skating except from our top three women. Everyone else has peaks and valleys, but the two that will be sent to the Olympics should be able to compete with the rest of the world. I doubt anyone is going to dethrone the South Korean wunderkind who's the current world champion, but I have hopes one of our girls can reach the podium. Rachel Flatt finished 5th last year.

So I guess tomorrow I'll get back down to work and start watching DYNASTY - Season 4, Volume 2. There are 13 episodes in the set, so that will take me two days. If Cindy is the one who sent it, I assume she's the one who owns the correspondence and therefore all you'd need would be her permission to print or quote it.

WOW!

Oh....dang! I figured yours had already let out after So. Pacific so I walked back to the hotel. And on the way I stopped at the freshmarket place and got some canned ready to eat tuna, some rye crisps and apples. Had I known mousse was possible...

Maybe it's a good thing I DIDN'T know!

Yay! DR Danise is back among the flock. This is fantastic news!

I had a wonderful time visiting Bruce Pomahac; we watched the Jean Simmons-Spencer Tacy film THE ACTRESS, based on Ruth Gordon's autobiographical comedy AGES AGO. It's quite delightful. I had read Miss gordon's biography so i was wise to a lot of the story but the fictionalizations to make a play were very interesting. There's one sequence that looks as though Meredith Willson lifted it for THE MUSIC MAN and the film has the same look as THE MUSIC MAN and MEET ME IN ST LOUIS, although the Jones family in Massachusetts is in a lower class income than the family in St Louis. Jean Simmons is beautiful and wonderful as 17 year-old Ruth Gordon, as are Teresa Wright and Spencer Tracy as her parents, and everyone else, especially the wonderful character people and the two young actresses playing her high school friends. I believe it's Tony Perkins' first movie.

Then we watched the silent film version of SHOW BOAT with Laura La Plante and Joseph Schildkraut. Neither of us had ever seen it, and it's amazing. Much more faithful to the novel, it's a very powerful and beautiful film.

And now I'm home and ready to pass out.

TOD: Well, about 12 hours ago, when the producer was making me cry in our meeting by yelling at me about some perceived slight that I had nothing to do with I would have said THIS job.

The film before this was completely miserable for about 9 months, so that was actually worse than my previous worst job, which was cleaning houses after they were built, often before the plumbing was functioning and there was water (which didn't deter the construction workers, if you get my drift).

I guess some jobs are sh#tty in different ways.

Dr Edi, glad you made it to NYC and that you got to enjoy South Pacific.

Thanks, DR Cillaliz. And tonight I enjoyed HAIR. And tomorrow, who knows? I plan to go see the Tim Burton exhibit at MoMA but will probably see what TKTS has, too. I will take a late flight home in case I can get tickets for a show.

DR edisaurus - The Tim Burton exhibit at MoMA requires timed tickets - and they sell out fast on the weekend.  Get there early!  -Or purchase one online in advance.  *It's also the closing weekend of the Bauhaus exhibit there.

DR edisaurus - Your show got out at 10:45pm last night.  My show didn't get done until about an hour later.  -And we didn't leave the backstage area until around 12:15 - lots of people waiting in line for Maestro Domingo. ;)

Well, again, since today was a "non-day" for me, well...

Sometimes literally.

bk - What DR Pogue said in regards to the correspondence.

*Do you have a "legal department" lined up to check things out once your manuscript is finished?

DR elmore - I'm glad your day took a quite wonderful turn for the better.

I just ate a bunch of weird tasting jelly beans that came with the room. (Complimentary...I didn't raid the minibar!) I guess that's dinner!

Speaking of coming with the room, it's very "Noisy" next door.

Some tasted like floor wax. Well, I mean, how floor wax smells.

And popcorn.

And some other weird stuff. But no label...just a clear bag with a ribbon.

Oh! I'm sorry to hear that.

And I'm really sorry that I'm not free tomorrow - As a member, I can head into the exhibit anytime.

*Now, if you really wanted to see the exhibit, you could sign up for a MoMA membership in the morning, and put it to use right away.  The regular admission to MoMA is $20, and the yearly membership is $75, so... Might be worth it.  -And since there are no pictures on the Membership Cards, you could always leave it with Peter here in NYC for his use when you're not in town.  -Just a thought.  -And a portion of the membership is tax-deductible.

No worries.  Next time. ;)

The Chocolate Mousse at Cafe Fiorello is listed as "For Two", and it really is! The waiter comes to your table with a "dual bucket".  He spoons out a very generous serving of Chocolate Mousse onto your plate out of one side of the bucket, and then spoons out a very generous "side" of schlag - whipped cream - next to the Chocolate Mousse.  I had opted for their take on cannoli last night - they use almond tuiles in place of the traditional fried pastry shells/tubes.  However, I did "help" Patrick with his mousse.  -And when the waiter cleared the table, there was still some mousse left on the plate! -"For Two" indeed!

*The Chocolate Mousse is Patrick's favorite dessert there.  They made sure to have at least one serving saved for him after his performance at The Met last night. :)
