Somone post the 3D "discovery" on IMDb

The many closeup action scenes suggest that the producers may have been intending to release the film in 3D which was at its height from 1953-54. By the time of the film's release 3D was being replaced by the many wide screen formats, without the need of special glasses, such as Cinemascope and Vista Vision.

Friday is a work day oh well.

Zach's last scene taped - so far - will air today on ALL MY CHILDREN....it's some kind of party.  I guess I will watch on SOAPNET tonight when I get home.  I kept thinking that David Canary was James Mitchell....whew!

The book The Warner Bros Story makes no mention of DRAGNET being filmed in 3-D, but as MR BK writes - the camera set ups and action in 3-D films is very specific, so my guess is that was the plan.

Good morning!

internet seems to be OK right now.  Seems very odd that it's been doing this for three days now - in our immediate area, it seems.

I was able to get online for a solid three hours yesterday doing tax stuff, which (I'm sorry, HHW  :) ) was an absolute priority while it was working well. but mostly it would work great for a while and then slow down then fade.  I had to keep reminding myself to Save, Save, Save as often as I could think of it - since the tax program at the office loses info if you don't process - but really, that's something I should always do anyway, so it's a good habit to get into for me.

Good morning!

No winter weather yet, but it's coming. The stories in the newspaper make it sound dire, so time will tell. I'm happy to be home, warm, and comfortable. Only a power outage could spoil that.

Got a look at the Blu-ray release schedule for next week, and boy am I going to be slammed. Four releases from Fox alone plus a Disney release, and that's just the Blu-rays. THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW - Season Six is also allegedly coming. This on top of all the Criterion product which arrived yesterday.

Of course, the Criterion stuff isn't coming out until mid-February or later, so it's not pressing that those get done immediately. And with those mostly being Fox discs, who know at what point next week they'll arrive (not likely early).

So, today's work project will be WHIP IT on Blu-ray. No doubt about that.

Tomorrow's work project will either be the DIsney film if it comes today (it's a martial arts movie) or I'll start on BARNABY JONES and see if I can't get through its 13 season one episodes over the weekend. That would be a major box to get through and be done with.

Good morning! It's a lovely morning in LA. I love seeing all of the plants in bloom since everything at home is in hibernation. We're going out on one of our favorite walking routes, to breakfast and then shopping for sound gear before meeting with the baseball composer. I'm also going to try to sneak in a visit to Marvel before meeting friends for dinner and the first of two Cowboy Envy concerts, this one in Redondo Beach.

We really hope that bk can come to the second one, in Pasadena Saturday night at 7. Even though this is their last gig ever after 16 years, the girls are really excited that there may be a famous record producer in the house! We bought a group of  tickets so if you can't make it, Bruce, let us know. It's a small place, @ 40 or 50 seats, and we want to make sure they have a full house!

As many great vibes as you can handle, DR Ginny.

I have been up since 4:30 this morning to cover a wonderful event we have here in San Antonio. To kick off the rodeo season, a group that raises scholarship money offers a free breakfast to anyone who shows up. That usually means 10,000+ people. This year, it was raining like crazy, temperatures had dropped and wind chill factor just made it colder. But that didn't stop thousands from showing up for free breakfast tacos, tamales, brats, sausage biscuits, coffee, you name. I finished my work in about an hour and was gone.

But it gave me time to listen to "Swimming," Nicola Keegan's novel on CD in the car.
Home CD will now be playing "The Cradle Will Rock," thanks to DR George. VCR will play "Cradle Will Rock," and DVD will be playing a French thriller called "Cache."

More work calls. Have a great weekend, all.

DR Ginny - The whole DC hotel circuit goes crazy in the summer because of tourist season, so... To start off, just see what you can book now at the major hotel chains, see if any of them are giving discounts for booking and paying in advance.

Marriott has various properties - in all their "tiers" - around the Convention Center, so a Courtyard may be reasonable.  The Hotel Monaco - part of The Kimpton Group - is nicely located, and sometimes has some great rates.

I'll do some more research...

And thanks, too, Jose for the hotel info about DC.  We have a Kimpton connection that I may try to tap.

matt h, i read Disney will continue the miramax brand.  i really meant to ask to what extent will your work be affecting.  you review so much it seems losing miramax would make a small dent in your viewing.

We agree on HUMAN TARGET & WHITE COLLAR.  I haven’t washed BONES yet.  Keith finally gave up on the show & of course I thought last week’s episode was the first good one in a long, long time.

Well, it's true I review a lot of product, but a dent is a dent.

I forgot to mention that I was very happy about the PWOJECT WUNWAY results last night....I hate team challenges - but I guess we need them now and then.

I agreed with the judges on the lowest scores....but might have gone in a slightly different direction for the winner....but then we saw the workroom antics....and maybe they didn't....even with producer input.

I got my Universal DVD-Rs today, too, but I have my heart set on watching THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM on HD-DVD tonight to see if I need to get the Blu-ray instead. The first two I upgraded because the audio was decidedly better on the Blu-rays as opposed to the HD-DVDs. ULTIMATUM has a Dolby TrueHD track on the HD-DVD, and I just can't remember how effective it is.

I haven't watched it yet. (It's the last show remaining on my DVR that I haven't gotten to). I also hate team challenges. I always find them completely unfair and the results generally infuriating. So, I may or may not get to it tonight. Depends on what kind of time I have left before I start watching GHOST WHISPERER.

I began my viewing with last night's THE MENTALIST rerun. This was the one with Patrick put in jail and managing to manipulate the situation to his advantage as usual. I love these kinds of scenes with him. The mystery wasn't the greatest, and the murderer easy to spot.

Then I watched WHIP IT on Blu-ray. Drew Barrymore's direction is the best thing about the movie (and Ellen Page is certainly fine in the leading role). The script is really second-rate, however. An almost complete lack of character development (and there are interesting characters there who, if investigated more thoroughly, would have made for a really fine movie.)

But Drew does well with the roller derby scenes, an underwater love scene, a couple of good moments between Page and her father and Page and her friend on the squad. If only there had been a better script for her to direct.

The bonus features were really skimpy: nine deleted scenes, a three-minute conversation with the screenwriter about how she got the idea for the script, and a 30-second promo for the soundtrack to the film.

That's it!

Just saw the ratings for last night.

Against weak competition, BONES had its highest ratings in three years and was the night's highest rated show.

That Jeff Probst show at 8 p.m. on CBS was a total bust earning the lowest ratings in that slot in many, many years. Looks like that's a pilot that will not be going to series. THE MENTALIST rerun was CBS' only bright spot on the night winning the timeslot with a rerun episode and ranking as the second highest rated show of the evening.

I reconnected a few days agowith an old law school classmate.  we had written a song together back in law school days, and I'd had the old tape converted to mp3, but tracked him down (not hard to do) to make sure he hadn't given his lyric to someone else to set over the years.

We talked over whether the super-simple "demo" was Ok to put on YouTube and I got the sense that he thought what we had was OK, just put it on there, but explain what it was - just a slightly, scratchy old piano recording.

So here is a silly but sweet song in time for Valentine's day, the only song where I've ever set someone else's lyric, called IS IT MUSHY TO SAY I LOVE YOU?  It's just an audio, no video, but the lyrics are in the "more info" section at the right.

Jrand - Gonzalez, of course, did the disco cover of "Ain't No Way To treat A lady" written by one of my very favorite new internet friends. and from whom I took a wonderful writing course in 2009, Harriet Schock.

Here's Gonzalez doing Harriet's song:

I met Harriet by phone initially, mainly decided to call her as a result of some nice comments she made about liking the way her music was used in that AIG/Helen Reddy parody mix.

My 11 year quest for Quarters is over!!!

Late this afternoon while doing laundry I finally got the last quarter in the State and 6 U.S. Territories Program. I needed the quarter for the Northern Mariana Islands. I went to the deli around the corner from the Laudromat and when I got my change I received that very quarter. It's not as new and shiny as I would hope but I'm not getting the quarters for their enhanced value. I'm just putting them in a book to have them. I may try to shine it up and make it look a bit nicer.

Where are the Northern Mariana Islands, you ask? They are in a region called Oceania, islands in the North Pacific Ocean, about three-quarters of the way from Hawaii to the Philippines.

This is from the U.S. Mint Web site regarding the NMI

A possession of Spain until 1898, the islands were sold to Germany in 1899.  The islands were seized in 1914 by Japan, whose control of the islands was officially recognized in 1921 by the League of Nations.  American forces occupied the Marianas during World War II, and in 1947 the group was included in the U.S. Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands.  Residents approved separate status for the Northern Marianas as a U.S. Commonwealth in 1975, and the covenant to establish the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands was signed by President Gerald Ford the next year.

The train trip to DC went smoothly and the hotel already had a room ready for me when I arrived around 10:45. The research went well, although there are several Victor Herbert compositions written in the 1890s that were not submitted for copyright with the LoC at the time. I'm therefore missing about six compositions for Cello and Piano and I hope I can locate them in the Juilliard or Manhattan School of Music libraries. I spent about $160 on photocopies, getting al the Herbert pieces for cello I could, including a couple of manuscript scores that were not published, and all the art songs Herbert wrote as well as songs for plays and singers that were not part of the stage shows. Things were very pleasant overall, so that made life more comfortable, and today, while Loras Schissel and I were going through the unidentified Herbert manuscripts, I discovered what may be a missing song from BABES IN TOYLAND. Filed under the title "She was a country girl," I believe it's the missing song "Evaline McCook" that was cut after opening night in Chicago on June 17, 1903.

So, since the Herbert album I'm working on was to be a recording of his pieces for cello and piano, I got worried that if the missing items don't show up, there may not be enough music for a recording, What goes with it? This morning I gave it some thought and figured there were two possibilities:
  1. Herbert's pieces for piano solo
  2. another composer's music for cello and piano, so, since Offenbach and Herbert were both virtuoso cellists, I pulled all of Offenach's published music for cello and piano and photocopied them along with all of Herbert's solo piano compositions. I was finished by 12:30, got to Union Station by 1 pm, exchanged my ticket from the 4:05 to 2:05 train and headed back to Manhattan.

On a more shocking bit of news, we just got the 2010 bill for the first half of the year's taxes on my dad's property and it's tripled since last February! I spoke to Jo yesterday morning, and she and I are both pushing for the realtor. I think Randy's now coming around, so we need a lot of Ohio Realtor Vibes to sell this white elephant.

DR Ginny, I hope things are improving with the thinner. You might consider staying at the Capitol Hill Suites. I really like them, and the rooms have a microwave and fridge if you want to stock up on food.

Tonight’s full moon, AKA wolf moon, will appear 30 percent brighter and 14 percent larger than any other full moon this year, because our cosmic neighbor will actually be closer to Earth than usual.  And in a remarkable coincidence, Mars is at opposition tonight—directly opposite to the sun in the sky—so that as the sun sets in the southwest, Mars rises in the northeast.

Just finished my taxes, and as usual half of my federal refund goes to the state of Indiana.
I don't understand it.....but then again.....no one is taxed more because of his or her sex, no one is taxed more because of his or her race, no one is taxed more because of his age BUT we ARE taxed MORE because we are SINGLE.

Unfair.

I hope it doesn't rain, especially as we have special plans tomorrow.  The woman I have mentioned before who began the Romanian Rescue group will be stopping by our house tomorrow with her husband & 5 dogs.  A couple of weeks ago she took home a mother dog, her 3 pups, and another little pup from Romania.  Now they will be going to their new homes in Portland & we are just 10 minutes off the freeway as they drive from California to Portland.  I'm very excited to see the pups and to meet Nancy in person.

With all those dogs coming here we do not want rain!!

Richard and I watched Every Little Step while we ate pizza tonight and enjoyed it very much.  A Chorus Line is one of our favorite shows and we've seen in together in New York twice - in 1982 and 2006.  Watching the movie made me want to be in NYC.

For Cillaliz:

http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2010/01/29/20100129mctension0129.html

That's just insane.  I do remember when I was at the Public defender's office there and the county board fired our boss that everyone was paranoid for awhile about who was going to be fired who was spying for who etc.  So, a lot of it is Sheriff Joe, but some of it is just the regular paranoia there.  I think it's the heat ;)

It stopped snowing about 45 minutes after it started, but it's very cold out, and I suspect the dampness is now freezing on the roads. I have no idea at this point if I'll be able to walk tomorrow or not.

I did watch THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM on HD-DVD. I really paid attention this time to picture and sound quality, easy to do since I've seen the movie enough to be able to follow the plot but pay closer attention to other aspects of the presentation.

There was some moire with the HD-DVD transfer, and the Dolby TrueHD, I felt, was a little undernourished. With all the chases and fights and crashes and gun shots, the surrounds just didn't seem to be quite as active as I would have liked.

So, I will likely get the film on Blu-ray when I can find it cheaper than it is right now: $16.99. Perhaps if it shows up in my gold box at some point, I'll get it then.

That being said, my day started with the sign guys doing my door. I was very pleased and will try to post a photo.

Throughout the day I heard from several people telling me they plan to be there Tuesday and how people have been talking about it. It really changed my mood and got me back to being excited about the open house. I went home and hauled more boxes of books. I framed a bunch of photos for the library shelves, bought a plant that mom's going to give me and picked up a flowering plant for one of the tables.

I had a number of compliments on the door and this afternoon a bunch of the court security officers from the federal building stopped by for a preview and to find out what I'm serving for food, lol.  They said they'll be there and that it's been put on the weekly schedule at the federal building.  It was also discussed at the US Attorney's office staff meeting.

I'm planning to pick up some extra food and pop this weekend. At least cookies and whatever else I see at Sam's club that will keep if I have too much.  I finished decorating the library/conference room as much as I'm going to now.  I've still got to figure out what to put on the wall in Edith's area and in my office.

Next, I watched tonight's GHOST WHISPERER. Some of the demon stuff was really pushing it, especially since the rest of the episode was involving, and I always love seeing Bruno Campos (who played the father). I like that Jim had more to do in this episode.

MEDIUM certainly had a fun, twisty episode with some deft surprises I enjoyed. Bridgette entering puberty didn't interest me much, but it was nice of Ariel to help her along which was sweet.

I didn't go to Candace's service.  While it truly  broke my heart and I will miss seeing her, the truth is I'm not close to the family. I cried about it yesterday (in my car, that's where I do such things).  When I walked into work Edith immediately said "Sick or something wrong?"  Sheesh, I really must have looked bad, lol. Anyway, I talked about it a little.  Today just started out on such a positive note and it continued all day.  I didn't want to go back to being sad, so I stayed away.

It's just an audio, no video, but the lyrics are in the "more info" section at the right.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3lgqDTsFuU

I like it. Scratchy demo and all

Count me in on that, too! I've always thought it was unfair.

Another thing that doesn't seem logical to me: having to declare your refunds as additional income for the next year. I've already paid tax on that money. It seems like a never-ending cycle.

Think I'll call it a night. I have a very busy weekend of cleaning, decorating, buying the supplies for the open house and relaxing at some point.   It will be a good week. I have had a lot of new clients coming in, so once the open house is over and my friends leave from their over night visit, I'll have a clean house and a fully decorated office.  I can then just sit down and work.  Sounds great to me

OUR DEAR NEIGHBOR GEORGA OSBORNE AS MRS. MILLER

Here's a clip of our dear neighbor Georga Osborne doing her hilarious Mrs. Miller routine.  As BK knows from working with her on the Last Starfighter readings in 2006, Georga is terrific singer, but here she's playing a terrible singer called Mrs. Miller and it is pee-in-your-pants funny (to steal a term from a seminar i went to last weekend)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ASbBqQl6WQ

If you like it, please comment and rate it - Georga is a delight, as BK can attest from having worked with her in the 2006 readings!

DR Ginny - Most Marriott properties will waive the internet access fee if you become a member of their Marriott Rewards programs - which is free to join.  Something to ask about.
