Title: MUSIC BY DAVID SHIRE
Post by: bk on January 31, 2010, 12:24:55 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were music to your ears, and now it is time for you to post until the  cows come home - they're currently singing The Story Moos On.

Well, maybe it was good bk didn't make it to the concert---it turned out to be a late night. The concert went from around 7-9, but two friends didn't get there until the show was over. Peter, one of the latecomers (he's a writer who writes Clive Barker's Hellraiser movies) suggested we go to some place called The Hat which had amazing corned beef and fries. So our party of 7 and the band went there and they had two big tables in the back so we all fit perfectly. By the time they chased us out, everybody felt like they were old friends and were exchanging numbers. It was just a great collection of friends all in one place.

We took our niece (she's on the USC faculty) back to her Silverlake apartment and then went out to North Hollywood to Research Video. The owner wasn't able to make it to the concert but begged us to come there and we spent until after 2AM watching all sorts of rare videos. I had worked with the owner when I was doing the Mercer film. He has immense warehouses of thousands of hours of vintage TV shows on every format imaginable. It is quite overwhelming. I was afraid Susan and Greg might get bored but they were fascinated and Greg mentioned how important he thought the work was that Paul was doing to preserve this material.

So now we're home and quite tired, but will meet another group of friends tomorrow at Chan Dara for Thai lunch.

Now...zzzzzz....

Good morning, all! I went to bed around 1 am, was awakened by the arrival of my neighbor and his girlfriend around 3:45 am, and when he got out of bed and opened something that thudded on the floor around 6:45, I figured the hell with it and got up. I've been playing Bach's "Magnificat"  loudly in retaliation ever since.

My cold has landed, not severely but enough to be an irritant, and I plan to stay indoors all day, dozing, reading, working on taxes. I need to find last year's checkbook to determine if I need to give Joshie a 1099? for the payments for Finale lessons.

I can announce today that it's official: the final missing song from BABES IN TOYLAND has been discovered, and thanks to my friend Loras Schissel, I was the discoverer. Long thought to be an interpolation written by Mabel Barrison who played Jane, "Evaline McCook" was indeed written by Vctor Herbert and Glen MacDonough under the title "She Was A Country Girl." After the June 17, 1903, Chicago opening night, the song was cut for the lousy reviews it got for its performers. It never ended up in the final BABES materials, and the manuscript vocal score, which was in the unidentified section of the Herbert Collection of the Library of Congress, was discovered in the files for Herbert's next show BABETTE. Edward Waters, who catalogued the collection, simply notated it as "found with Babette material." I am very happy.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday to DR Michael Shayne !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The neighbors next to me hear nothing because the walls are thick. A lot of the sound from upstairs, beyond the vibrations coming through the ceiling, comes from the vents. If the ass thinks he can stay out all night, come in at 4 am and be noisy, then sleep all day, well, fuckem!

The barking dog's been bad enough, and now he's under control, I guess it's time to be a nuisance in another way.

Good morning!

We had a very hard freeze last night (15 degrees), and so all the sleet and snow is hard as a brick, and with the temperature only climbing to 32 today, there isn't much chance of stuff melting.

Obviously, I didn't take my walk this morning. The ground is completely covered with ice and hardened snow, and I didn't want to risk any accidents. So I'm treadmilling it today and tomorrow, most likely.

I have six more episodes of BARNABY JONES today, and it's impossible to get them all watched this afternoon, so this will definitely spill into tonight's work hours. If there is time left, I'll decide what I might be able to fit in the time span. I have more Jolson from the Warner Archives, those Universal DVD-Rs that came on Friday, and THE BOURNE IDENTITY on Blu-ray that I'm anxious to tackle.

I saw that list of Deanna Durbin movies that are being contemplated for inclusion in the Universal DVD-R program. I was disappointed as the focus was clearly on her films of the 1930s when she was a child/slightly older version of SHirley Temple's Miss Fix-It. The only two of her adult roles being considered were HERS TO HOLD and her last film FOR THE LOVE OF MARY. Very disappointing! I wanted anything from NICE GIRL? onward including my favorite HIS BUTLER'S SISTER.

Mr Fraser and his partner visited Mr Bogarde and his partner in their London home.  Mr Bogarde asked Mr Fraser if he would like to see something interesting, and of course John said yes, thinking it might be "interesting."  They went to the top floor of the house.  There were HUGE posters of all of Mr Bogarde's movies on the walls and ceilings.  As he talked, Mr Bogarde changed his clothes into leather from head to toe, then he uncovered a motorcycle that he had installed on some type of treadmill, and proceeded to "drive" it loudly for several minutes.....telling Fraser that that was his true personality and that having the motorcycle was his only release from the "nice" guy parts he was stuck playing.....Mr Fraser excused himself, disappointed and intrigued all at the same time.

I did, I believe. I like Mr Fraser in A STUDY IN TERROR. Doesn't he end up beling Jack the Ripper? My real memory of the movie is how wonderful Robert Morley is as Mycroft Holmes.

Here's my Library of Congress friend Loras, a Sousa conductor and specialist. Loras' knowledge of 19th and early 20th century American popular music has been a great help in my research. Now, if he'd only answer his phone!

Yes, I have it, and thank goodness for it! Certainly it concentrates on the adult phase of her career, and I'm sure those who like her as a child soprano will be happy for the (potential) new releases, but I much prefer her voice once it matures.

And of course all of the talk yesterday at HHW about the Miss America Contest compels me to remind everyone that Miss Mary Jane (Allison) Hayes was the Miss District of Columbia (Washington D.C.) contestant in the 1949 competition.

She was bounced from the contest when one of the M.A. Watchdogs saw her in the lobby of an Atlantic City hotel...embracing a male!  Of course it was her mother's cousin whom she hadn't seen in many years who had come to see her in the contest.  And Mary Jane continued compete since neither she NOR the judges (including Earl Wilson and Walter Winchell) were told that she had been disqualified.  Winchell in particular was incensed to discover that his votes for Mary Jane were invalid.

An interesting thing about Paul that he's never talked about to me but I found out was that Graham Parsons was in his first band, The Shilos.

He's also made some nice docs about music (The Kingston Trio, The Carpenters) that show up from time to time on PBS.

Today we're meeting some friends from Randy Newman's group---Susan (occasional lurker here) who went with us on our late night Research Video visit, another frience who used to write for Andy Kauffman and helped originate Comic Relief but doesn't talk about it), another friend in broadcasting who has a car I covet (a Morgan---hope he brings it!) a friend from Paramount (I'm trying to be very Hollywood and impress everyone) and our niece, Michelle, who teaches African American studies at USC.

She's a big fan of director Julie Dash (known as the first African American woman to direct a feature release) so we're going to Julie's after that. (I edited for Julie for many years.)

Between that, I'm meeting with the producer of THE WOLFMAN and the upcoming CAPTAIN MARVEL about a side doc project.

That's how I roll in Hollywood!

But first, I need more sleep!

Are you serious???   African American studies at USC?

I have a lot of tv viewing tonight including a few things that air at different times in the US:

We have the premiere of DAMAGES, tomorrow's CHUCK, Tuesday's LOST (the 1 hour recapish show). And then I also have DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and BROTHERS & SISTERS.

I had extra yogurt that was expiring. ANd my sister had bananas in her freezer that were getting old. So i spent part of the morning making banana breads and banana muffins.

Then i went to babysit my 8 month old niece at the skating rink, while my 4 year old niece and her parents went skating (ice for DR Jane).

Just finished watching GIRLS ON THE LOOSE (1958). Mara Corday played pure evil quite well! Many sets and costumes and even music left over from previous Universal-International movies.

Now, to watch TEEN AGE CRIME WAVE or INHERIT THE WIND. It is difficult to decide.

Jon Hamm as sexy Sen. Scott Brown last night on SNL

I really, really liked last night's "SNL".  A pretty good episode overall.  Even the throwaway sketches had a good chuckle or two.  -And bringing the whole closet organizer guy sketch full circle... :)

*Oh... And "Hamm and Bublé", of course.

I did not watch SNL, but the sketch I posted had received some comments....I can't imagine much of any episode of the show being worth a chuckle.

HOWEVER, I must say that I just watched three episodes of Season One of HERE'S LUCY and did not laugh once.  Who was this Milt Josefsberg who wrote many of the episodes and was the script consultant on the rest?  He certainly wasn't very good.  And everyone YELLS so much!

I decided to do a working lunch just to see if I could possibly finish BARNABY JONES this afternoon. No dice. I'm still 1 1/2 episodes short of finishing. I'll have to get to them tonight, but that means I'll have a nice long slot of time to watch THE BOURNE IDENTITY on Blu-ray. Can't wait to see it.
Title: Re: MUSIC BY DAVID SHIRE
Post by: Matt H. on January 31, 2010, 01:19:41 PM
as for all of the BARNABY JONES episodes I watched, there was the usual selection of guest stars from that era that appeared in almost all of the CBS crime shows of the time: Roddy McDowell, Jackie Coogan, Arlene Golonka, Marlyn Mason (who sang an anemic version of "Try to Remember" playing a lounge singer), Reni Santoni, Claude Akins, Dabbs Greer, Neva Patterson, Bill Bixby (very handsome), Louise Troy, and Barry Sullivan is the main guest star (killer) in the episode I am currently watching.

And unless those Fox or Disney Blu-rays appear tomorrow (or THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW on DVD), I'll be starting on that mountain of Criterion discs due on February 16th. I'll begin with Lola Montes on DVD (I have the Blu-ray version, too). I cannot wait to see this film in the longest version they currently have - 115 minutes. Not the original version, of course, but better than the chopped up 90 minute English dubbed version I saw eons ago.

Happy Birthday DR Michael Shayne!!!

DR JMK, if Chopin's Revelutionary Etude was ever requested at a funeral I was playing, I would insist on playing a recording, no amount of money is worth that!  I hope it went well

DR Matthew - Pssst: Keyboard. Sequencer.

As I think more about this, I'm reminded that in the choir loft we actually have a "Piano Disc" piano that someone donated a few years ago that is complete with floppy discs of piano music.  From the floor of the church, you can't see the piano, but you and see the person sitting at the piano - so... I'm all set   LOL

I haven't EVER watched a complete Grammy telecast.

However, the Oscar nominations are announced on Tuesday morning, and I'll be anxiously awaiting those.

Jennifer i hope you feel better after playing with your niece, not worse.  i'm also dragging today & am about to take a walk to, hopefully, perk me up.

I lay for a bit and when i woke up i had chills all over my body - a low fever of 100.2. But luckily it was pretty low. It's sort of amazing that you can get chills from only a temp of a 100.

When I went back down and get settled back into the home theater, I picked back up with BARNABY JONES and watched the remaining 1 1/2 episodes. Meg Foster was the other guest star in the episode I had only half finished.

In the last episode, Gary Owens and Peter Haskell were the guest stars.

Next I watched THE BOURNE IDENTITY. I've always loved the first film in the series, and it's one of those ovies that gets better with frequent revisits (and after you've seen the other two and understand what some of the terms and names they constantly drop really mean).

The big news for me, however, was the tremendous improvement in picture and especially sound quality on this Blu-ray. Not a hint of moire in the Blu-ray while my HD-DVD had some flickering and patterns in blinds and paneling.

The HD-DVD had only a Dolby Digital Plus audio track that did not have quite the heft I always thought it should have. The DTS-HD MA 5.1 track was a blow-out, a wonderful immersive experience that was worth every dime that I paid for this upgrade from HD-DVD. I only hope I can find some time soon to reexperience THE BOURNE SUPREMACY on Blu-ray as I suspect it, too, will be a vivid upgrade to the HD-DVD.

I watched that LOST: THE FINAL CHAPTER recap show that airs tuesday before the 2 hour premiere. It did not have any pop-ups. It was narrated by the guy who plays Ben.  It was sort of interesting, but not as good as the pop-up finale that aired last week.

It could help people who have never seen the show. They basically went through each character and described their history. And then they recapped some of the key events focusing at the end on last season's finale.

I know i can't wait for the season to start on Tuesday!

Then I watched a couple of the bonus features on the disc that focused on Robert Ludlum. They weren't in HD, but they were interesting.

I ended my evening with last night's CASTLE repeat. It was that very puzzling mystery concerning the murder of the girl in a bathtub full of motor oil.

I enjoyed seeing it again, but because the local ABC affiliate was transmitting church closings last night, the HD picture got shrunk in a box for almost the entire program. I HATE THAT.

If I get no packages tomorrow with discs that come out this week, I'll be starting on the Criterion stack I have beginning with Lola Montes. These don't come out until February 16th, so there's plenty of time to get to these three movies in both DVD and Blu-ray incarnations, but they'll all be pushed aside for the this-week releases once they arrive.

I really thought HAIR would win the cast album Grammy.

I think WSS won because it was released on a major label and not one of the smaller "boutique labels"

I really wish I knew they actually vote for in this category. Production? The vocals? The score if it is new?

Please only listen to this one if you're tolerant of people making fun of Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown and his Cosmopolitan centerfold past:  :)

(it's a PROMISES PROMISES audio-only parody of I'LL NEVER FALL IN LOVE AGAIN)

Thanks if you have time to listen.

For reasons too silly to explain, there's no video - so you may want to click on the MORE INFO section so you can follow along with the parody lyric on the audio.

I'm totally exhausted.  Muse Margaret called and she loved most of the new stuff - she laughed, she was touched.  But there were about six things that didn't sit well with her, so we went over them and I just removed all six of them, which cut about four pages and really did tighten things up.  One thing she thought was just unnecessary as it didn't really mean anything.  Two other things she thought just went on a bit too long, so one I cut in its entirety and the other I shortened by an entire page.  She's just unerring in what to fix.  She did ask me to take out a paragraph about her, but I refused - she's very shy, but she's been such an important part of my life that to remove that would be folly.  Besides, her husband played a part in two upcoming things I'm going to talk about so you have to know the history a little.

Then I wanted to make up the four pages, so I ended up writing about six new pages, fixing some chronology that was driving me insane (I think I've at least got it close to being right) and am moving right along.  We'll soon be halfway through 1983.

I can announce today that it's official: the final missing song from BABES IN TOYLAND has been discovered, and thanks to my friend Loras Schissel, I was the discoverer. Long thought to be an interpolation written by Mabel Barrison who played Jane, "Evaline McCook" was indeed written by Victor Herbert and Glen MacDonough under the title "She Was A Country Girl." After the June 17, 1903, Chicago opening night, the song was cut for the lousy reviews it got for its performers.

Congratulations, Larry!! ;D

Well, the Best Musical Show Album Grammy was presented before the broadcast.  However, the cast of of the Broadway-bound American Idiot did perform with Green Day.

OH! If I could, I would, DR George.  I actually snagged a ticket to the final dress of Ariadne auf Naxos tomorrow at The Met, and with the errands I have to run after that - it won't get out until around 3:00, there's no way I'll be able to make it back up to B&N in time for the signing.  However, if the my subway train karma is working tomorrow, well...
