Well, you've read the notes, the notes were welcoming, and now it is time for you to post until the February cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: YOMP!
-
I'm totally exhausted. Muse Margaret called and she loved most of the new stuff - she laughed, she was touched. But there were about six things that didn't sit well with her, so we went over them and I just removed all six of them, which cut about four pages and really did tighten things up. One thing she thought was just unnecessary as it didn't really mean anything. Two other things she thought just went on a bit too long, so one I cut in its entirety and the other I shortened by an entire page. She's just unerring in what to fix. She did ask me to take out a paragraph about her, but I refused - she's very shy, but she's been such an important part of my life that to remove that would be folly. Besides, her husband played a part in two upcoming things I'm going to talk about so you have to know the history a little.
BK, Margaret may be your muse, but is she a book editor in real life? It sounds like she could (or even should) be doing this professionally. :D

Happy Birthday Kerry!!!!

You must see...
YOMP!
Now in its 6th year!
Tickets available at the box office and at TeleCharge!

I filed my federal taxes last night and it went without problem though I did have to create a new account. I hope this doesn't happen every year. What's the point of creating an account if it's not there the next year.
I also went to the post office before I came to the office and put my state taxes in the mail. I've ranted about this before but I will not pay $9.95 for the "privilege" of filing my taxes electronically when I can do it for the cost of a stamp. NY State and the tax system is so f****d up that I think they may never get around to fixing it.
End of rant.
Have a nice day ;)
-
Happy Birthday to walker of Siugar......DR KERRY.
-
Happy Birthday to Mr Donald Feltham.

DR JOSE is going to the Met
He'll meet people he hasn't met.
I hope his tickets he don't forget

American Idiot sounds like a ridiculous idea to me.....but then I have only listened to the CD once. Crazy.....I am more interested in the musical ENRON, even if it is coming over from England and will be a warmed over version of whatever it is....
-
TOD:
Composer, classical: Tchaikovsky, P.I.
Composer, Broadway: Bernstein
Author: O. Henry

Off to do some non-quotidian things on the first of February. I don't even know what quotidian means.....but I would not want to see a film about it. I hope to be home in time to see 55 Days at Peking on TCM at 10:30 a.m.

TOD:
The first author whose work I went crazy-mad for was Agatha Christie. I was in seventh grade when I picked up my mother's copy of HALLOWE'EN PARTY and loved it. Over the next few years I went through every Christie book in my local library. It was a major event for me when her last four novels were released. I remember how stunned I was when Hercule Poirot's obituary appeared on the front page of The New York TImes.

TOD: Laura Ingalls Wilder

Thanks. It's never too late for birthday wishes

Happy Birthday to DR Kerry!
Happy Birthday to Donald!

Good morning, all! Today is also the 151st birthday of Victor Herbert and tonight I am attending a birthday concert at Lincoln Center. I believe it's presented by the Little Orchestra Society, which has done much for Herbert, although I loathed the last concert of theirs I attended - MLLE MODISTE, with a lame cast and under-rehearsed orchestra - but I have several friends singing in tonight's event and I hope it goes well. Before the event, i'm meting friends at Fiorello for dinner, so I will sadly miss the FINIAN'S RAINBOW release event at Barnes & Noble.
I have to go out today to the NYPL and to Encores! although I would rather stay in and fight this cold. This morning, I will listen to some Victor Herbert to celebrate his day.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday to DR Kerry !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday to Donald Feltham !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy Birthday, Kerry!

Happy Birthday, Donald!

TOD:
Artist: Al Hirschfeld (I have 10 of his signed/numbered lithos in my living room.)
Composer: Lerner & Lowe - I love all their scores.
Author: Maybe John Steinbeck.
At one point, I was reading everything by Ludlum & Stephen King, but then I got bored with them.
-
TOD:
Does this count?
Last year, I also read everything by BK (through MURDER AT THE GROVE, the last title of his I had).
-
Aaron Copeland
Stephen Sondheim
Noel Coward
Vincent Van Gogh

His obit appeared on the front pages of lots of newspapers including THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER.
I, too, love Agatha Christie, but I have never been able to compel myself to read CURTAIN. I just don't want to see his life be over. Silly, I know, but there you are. I have the book, and I know I must read it at some point, but I keep putting it off.
-
And the funny thing is, I had no compunction whatsoever about reading the last Miss Marple book SLEEPING MURDER. Of course, she doesn't die at the end of it.
-
Good morning!
Really evil cold this morning (12), and school is not in session since the bitter temperatures refroze all the slush from yesterday and made it hard again. Obviously, no walk this morning. If it gets to the mid-40s today as they're predicting, I may be able to walk tomorrow. So, treadmill time once again today. Ugh!
-
Aaron Copeland
Stephen Sondheim
Noel Coward
Vincent Van Gogh
Hmmm...I'm trying to remember which composer I started getting into first--either Copeland or Sondheim. My interest in both started about the same time, in ninth grade. I first became aware of Sondheim through one of the mini-musicals performed on THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW. I became a Copeland fan through a performance of "Appalachian Spring" on DANCE IN AMERICA on PBS.
-
I loved FORREST GUMP when I saw it in the theater, and I had it on both laserdisc and DVD. I have not yet sprung for the Blu-ray. Waiting for a drastic reduction in price. I adored Gary Sinese in the film and was furious when he lost the Oscar (though Martin Landau was a good Bela Lugosi in ED WOOD).
GUMP had that peculiar kind of backlash that often hits runaway smashes. When it comes out, everyone rushes to see it, it's the critics' and people's darling, and then a year later, people turn on it and denegrate it beyond human recognition. I never understood this reaction to GUMP. The fantasy is what it is, and I don't see how the passage of time should alter that perception.
-
Happy B-days to Kerry & Donald.
TOD:
The first artist I probably fell in love with was either Dr. Suess through his books or Hal Foster, through the Prince Valiant Sunday papers. The first composer I probably fell in love with was Edvard Grieg and his music to Ibsen's Peer Gynt of which my parents had a record. I particularly liked the part in The Hall of The Mountain King. First author that I fell in love with was no doubt Edgar Rice Burroughs through his Tarzan tales.
-
I think the first composer I took a serious liking to was Leroy Anderson. We played some of his light symphonic pieces in band, and I immediately began getting sheet music to play on the piano and buying Arthur Fiedler LPs that featured his light pieces. Imagine my surprise to learn he had also done Broadway!
-
As for authors, reading TOM SAWYER in junior high school made me an instant fan of Mark Twain, and I began to read everything I could. My grandmother had a bound set of the complete works, so I was over at her house a lot borrowing those books during high school.
-
No UPS deliveries yet, so I may be watching LOLA MONTES on DVD this afternoon. That's the next scheduled work project disc in the stack.
-
TV Notes:
Most shows have new episodes tonight except, surprisingly, CASTLE which is showing a rerun with new episodes on all the other networks.
Also remember that DAMAGES is on tonight at 10 on FX.
-
Happy Birthday to DR Kerry!!!
-
And Happy Birthday to Donald, too, even though he doesn't often drop by to say hello. This is in case he does!
:D
-
Still no shipping notice for THE MUSIC MAN Blu-ray/FINIAN'S RAINBOW cast CD.
Argh!
-
TOD:
Composer: I leard to read at the age of 3-4 from 78 rpm record labels: "Sabre Dance" by the Boston Pops was my favorite, so I'd guess Khatchaturian and Tchaikovsky wre my firsy two faves: "Sabre Dance" and Piano Concerto No. 1, followed by Humperdinck's HANSEL UND GRETEL, thanks to the 1954 movie and recording.
My first memory of a show composer is Richard Rodgers and the huge impact the film of THE KING AND I had at the age of 10. After seeing the film in Kansas City, MO, wile my dad was involved in a convention, my next movie on return to Ohio was CAROUSEL.
-
Happy birthday, DR Kerry!
Happy birthday, Donald!
Happy birthday, Victor Herbert!
Continued good vibes, DR Ginny
TOD:
Composer: When I was about 5 or 6, I wore out an album of George M. Cohan songs. Oh, and another of "Mary Poppins," so the Sherman Bros. would have to be up there, too. Cole Porter came next, then Sondheim.
Books: "Wonderful Wizard of Oz," anything by Erle Stanley Gardner or Agatha Christie (though I read it, I don't remember anything about the end of "Curtain").
Artist: Picasso
-
Just checked the front stoop and the side porch: no UPS deliveries, so it looks like LOLA MONTES it will be today. Actually, I'm glad as I'm dying to see this version, and I hope it fulfills my expectations in terms of scope and color.
-
I still have a bunch of things on the DVR to watch including SPARTACUS' second episode and THE OFFICE from 10 days ago! And last night's BROTHERS & SISTERS. Argh!
-
Now, I'm going to tidy up a few desktop items and then head downstairs to get cleaned up for lunch out today with best friend John. Even though schools are out today, he had to go into work, so we should be doing lunch regardless.
WBBL.
-
Thank you, DR John G!

TOD - I was an adult before an author really grabbed me - Gail Godwin. Just stumbled across one of her novels and then HAD to read everything and just this weekend I picked up her latest novel, Unfinished Desires.
-
Happy birthday to DR Kerry!!

And to Donald as well!

We had a fun day yesterday; our niece met us and met firneds form the Randy Newman list, which I abandoned when there were too many flame wars, but made alot of friends there that I still keep. over a nice long lunch at Chan Dara. Then to our niece's to see her place. Our plans with Julie Dash feel through because she was tending to a sick friend, and so we went on to our meeting at The Grove with the big time producer. He's not only working on CAPTAIN AMERICA, but Marvel has a whole series of films they're bringing out: IRON MAN II, THE AVENGER(S?), and some other comic super heros, so it sounds like he would be busy.
The story that is going to be the subject of the doc is fascinating and he wants to make a feature film of it as well, so he invited the writer of the feature to pitch it to me, and the book it's based on is supposed to be waiting for me when I get home. It was a very long meeting up in the Barnes and Noble coffee shop, and then the producer had to pack to fly to England tomorrow. Apparently a lot of these superhero films are made at Pinewood.
It looks like the schedule of this doc will work out to happen after the baseball film. I hope it can work around THE CLOSER because this will be shoestring even with the parties involved and I need to make some $$$!
After the meeting we ran some errands. DH wasn't hungry since he'd had a big lunch, so by the time he was ready for dinner it was almost 10 so we ended up taking fast food back to our room and I passed out shortly after. It's been a tiring but fun trip, like our trips always are. One day we will go somewhere just to relax, but will probably end up being really bored!
I did get to pick the fast food place, which was my beloved Koo-Koo-Roo.

We were sorry things didn't work out to see bk, but maybe we'll run into him in NY!

FORREST GUMP was fine. I didn't dislike it, but it has never one of my favorites.
I also thought that Gary Sinese was excellent, but I was delighted that Martin Landau won for ED WOOD. He was Lugosi.

I saw the last 35 minutes or so of "Annie Get Your Gun" on TCM last night. It was as "yawn" as I remember it being.
I don't know why, but I simply cannot get enthused about this film.
-
I really enjoyed part 2 of "Emma" on Masterpiece Classics last night. I think Romola Garai a wonderful Emma, and Jonny Lee Miller is quite a pleasant surprise as Mr. Knightley.

I am doing everything I can to restrain my excitement at getitng the Blu-ray of "The Music Man" this week!

I really enjoyed part 2 of "Emma" on Masterpiece Classics last night. I think Romola Garai a wonderful Emma, and Jonny Lee Miller is quite a pleasant surprise as Mr. Knightley.
I'm enjoying this series. Although he probably is about the correct age by now, Miller looks too young to me, andI think he's a wonderful actor. I prefer Mark Strong's performance in the Kate Beckinsale version, which is too short and could have given me about 30-60 minutes worth of Austen. I think both of these versions preferable to the one with Gwyneth Paltrow, which is maybe a bit too slick, too well-costumed and designed, and too arch.
-
I stopped by my bank to deposit a check, and it was closed, although there were personnel inside. The signs on the doors said there was an emergency, and I'm wondering if there might have been a robbery this morning,
I'm also staying about the apartment until late afternoon; I want to shake this cold.
-
Happy Birthday, Donald and Kerry.

Question
Noel Coward's play Present Laughter
is Present pronounce as in the present is under the Christmas Tree
or
as you are presenting something/someone as in the movie Presenting Lily Mars
-
The Revolutionary went well yesterday. I'm left handed, so that helps. No, no sequencing was used in the production of this piece. ;)
However, in related AMERICAN IDOL news, it turns out the deceased's grandson, who sang the Michael W. Smith opus "Friends" at the service, had actually made it to the second round of the Houston AI auditions, and he told us all about it. They had to sleep in the Astrodome, groups of three are called up before an Associate Producer and asked to sing for no longer than 10 seconds. In his group, the two others were simply told, "No," and were escorted away and they told him, "We'll keep you." He had done 10 seconds of a country song and they told him they were a pop show, not a country show, so to choose something else to sing before the judges. I can't remember what he said he chose, but when he got to the judges, he went up and they wouldn't let him do his original country song or start over. Sad, because he does have a great voice.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DONALD FELTHAM!

I remember that I was very angry about CURTAIN when I finished it. It was one of Christie's better books, but I never picked it up again. Perhaps I should give it another spin...
Was CURTAIN ever dramatized? And I wish they would release AGATHA domestically on dvd. I remember BK viewed an outer-region copy about a year ago and I was jealous...

Hi John G.
-
Shortly after beginning Jr. High I made a visit to the school library & met a wonderful woman, the school librarian. On that first visit she gave me a book to read, “The President's Lady” by Irving Stone. From then on I read every book of his I could find.
During my 3 years at the school she kept me well supplied with books, usually letting me check out more than the number of books permitted. She introduced me to many classics including my beloved “Les Misérables”.
Silly me, I expected all school librarians to be as helpful & expected to repeat the experience in high school. Sadly the new librarian brushed me off & told me to fend for myself.
-
Today I went bird watching. What a shame that I left my binoculars at home. Our best birds were two bald eagles, several robins, and a flock of western bluebirds.
-
We have not watched Emma yet. Is it only two parts?
-
any photos lara or were they too far away?
-
I've written about five pages and will take a little break, after which I'll resume.
-
We have not watched Emma yet. Is it only two parts?
4 parts, I believe. 240 minutes.
-
Topic of the Day:
Theater composers: The first composer whose recordings that I really fell in love with was Andrew Lloyd Webber. I hadn't discovered Stephen Sondheim yet, but when I did, it was bye-bye Andy! I still enjoy ALW musicals, and some of his are some of my absolute favorites (Evita, for one), but I love just about everything that Sondheim has done.
Non-theater Music: The Manhattan Transfer. I never really "loved" a particular pop music performer or group...individual songs, yes, but not a specific person. But when I discovered The Manhattan Transfer in either middle school or early high school, I totally fell in love with them and their music. And I still love them as much as I ever had! :D
-
We have not watched Emma yet. Is it only two parts?
4 parts, I believe. 240 minutes.
thanks. i'll wait until i have all 4 parts before i begin watching it.

Thanks to all for the congrats for my DS and and the blood test vibes. We're now into the "therapeutic" phase of this blood clot thing and the results of the blood tests just help determine my Coumadin dosage. I did learn this morning that I have a standing order for this test at the lab until July :P
-
IS THAT ONCE A WEEK GINNY?
-
I'm going to take disinfectant wipes with me to PT, just in case i'm beginning a cold vs allergies. the damp cold weather is not helping.
-
IS THAT ONCE A WEEK GINNY?
DR Jane - the way it works is the doctor or his nurse will call with today's results and tell me what dosage to take and when to have my next test. Repeat. Last time I had this it was every 3-4 days at the beginning.
-
Good Morning! Good Afternoon!
I'm up, I'm up... And I have returned from the Isle of Naxos.

Both of my parents are dealing with the same process(?) right now. Every time I go home, I always seem to be one who answers the phone when the nurse calls from their doctor's office.

Bill Bronston (Samuel's son) told me last year they're both coming soon. Of course, that was last year. ;)

*And I'm not talking about the Sylvester Stallone movie. ;)
-
Very stranbge reaction of those producers, DR JMK, since they've certainly had plenty of country artists in the finals including eventual winner Carrie Underwood and Kellie Pickler who last a long time along with Bucky Covington and others.
Of course, maybe they don't want any MORE country singers, but that certainly hasn't been the case in the past.
-
55 Days at Peking was a most excellent movie with some very good performances......too bad it (and CIRCUS WORLD also from Samuel Bronston) are unavailable in good Region 1 DVD's .
I looked at some of 55 DAYS on TCM-HD before I headed out to lunch. It looked RAVISHING! Really spectacular color and sharpness.
-
TOD artists:
Wasn't until college that I discovered Picasso. I suppose he was my first favorite.
-
Before heading out for lunch I did have time to watch a couple of other things. First up was THE OFFICE. Funny show that included a lot of clips from previous seasons, but the wraparound plot was also quite funny with the faux-Stanley, Computron, and other fun gimmicks.
-
I am doing everything I can to restrain my excitement at getitng the Blu-ray of "The Music Man" this week!
Just make sure you don't strain yourself. That would not be good.
-
Then I watched BROTHERS & SISTERS. I couldn't believe the family was making such a big deal about a 20th high school reunion, and I can't believe Kevin would have been so intimidated. Very artificial episode, I thought.

I've heard many horror(?) stories about that whole vetting and winnowing process. It's all about the "Look" and "TV-Q" before "Talent" is even considered. -Thus those poor clueless souls who end up padding the prelim rounds on TV.
-
DR Ginny - Congrats to your DS Rob!!!!
-
When I got in, I immediately sat down to watch LOLA MONTES. Suffice to say I had never seen anything remotely like this version of the movie. The circus scenes were completely new to me and certainly added another dimension to the movie that I vaguely remembered.
They've done a remarkable job restoring it to its correct Cinemascope ratio and with vivid color (typical EastmanColor with reds that are too candy cane red.)
Very entertaining film, but the lead just is SO flat and uncharismatic. Too bad they couldn't have done it with Vivien Leigh fifteen years prior. The role really needed some of her kittensh vivacity.
-
And now it's time to get the rest of my day in gear. Alas, I really don't think I'll be able to make it to B&N this afternoon for the Finian's Rainbow CD signing. -Now, if they had scheduled it at 7:00 like all the other CD signing, well... But, noooo, this one is at 5:00... ;) -Sorry, DR George. :(
-
I also listened to about 30 minutes of the commentary. It's by Ophuls expert Susan White. Filled with information but she has a dry, flat-voiced way of speaking that isn't much fun to listen to.
-
And yes...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DC (DEAR COMPOSER) VICTOR HERBERT!!!!!
:)
-
And...
Laters...
-
The second disc in the set contains the bonus features. I just glanced at the menu before shutting everything off. There are four items on the menu, but they could last anywhere from one minute to ninety minutes. I have no idea how long it will take me tonight to get through these bonus supplements.
-
And no more UPS packages today, so I guess tomorrow I'll focus on another of the Criterion discs, probably HUNGER.
-
Page Six Dance!!!
-
I think I've done about ten pages. I'm going now to pick up the Blu and Ray of The Music Man.
-
The Revolutionary went well yesterday.

Which makes it all the worse when they bring someone who clearly lacks both "the look" and the talent before the judges for no other reason than to have a trainwreck for the viewers to gawk at. It's another reason why I hate this show.

Haven't heard about dinner tonight, so maybe it's not happening.

I'm so glad this is being rereleased. The Fox Lorber (is that right? can't remember and don't want to check right now) release had horrendous soundtrack problems. There was a recurring hissing noise that was like an old LP with surface noise. It would ebb and flow every few seconds. I ultimately couldn't stand it and turned it off.

Isaac is definitely good looking, I'm sure that played into it, and he has a very sweet persona. His voice is sort of a midrange tenor/high bari sound with good timbre and control. I actually asked him to join my community choir, but he has church choir rehearsals that night. He's *very* religious, I will say that.
-
Well, I'm going to hop off-line now and work some on the review. Then I'll be back downstairs to finish up the set and then relax with some leisure viewing.
WBBL.

I just found this clip of Isaac online:

Thanks for the continued compliments on the photo as it fades into the mists of pages past.
-
DR JMK - both FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE and EL CID received such beautiful presentations on DVD....but I think Miramax had a lot to do with their releases, so I am thinking what with the bankruptcy of Miramax, 55 & CIRCUS might be left in limbo.
-
Nice photo!

What i always wonder is since there are so many levels you have to reach before you see the judges ... well these awful people... are the other level judges telling them they are good. Or are they simply telling them they are moving to the next round (and simply implying that they are moving on because they are good).
-
I woke up today feeling pretty lousy. No temp, but my throat was really raw. But Advil cold and sinus really helped. My throat doesn't really hurt. But i do feel extremely tired.
-
DR Ginny - Congrats to your DS Rob!!!!
Thanks, DR Jose - he received his test results today along with his University of Cincinnati diploma (with philosophy department honors) and notification that the State of Ohio has granted him an EMT license. He's had a good day and we're quite proud of him.
-
And I received a phone call, not from my doctor nor from his nurse, but from his wife (who's also a nurse) telling me my INR, my dosage, and to have another blood test Wednesday.
-
Hope you feel better soon, DR Jennifer!
-
55 Days at Peking was a most excellent movie with some very good performances......too bad it (and CIRCUS WORLD also from Samuel Bronston) are unavailable in good Region 1 DVD's .
Actually, there is a pretty good Region 0 foreign version available from either China or Korea [I can't read the language, so I don't know which).
I got it via ebay a few years ago and it is certainly very acceptable.
-
Of course, some of us have had the restored Lola Montes on DVD at least for a year. It came out in the UK. I'm looking forward to the Blu-Ray. I just watched the first twenty-five minutes of The Music Man on Blu-Ray. Wonderfully sharp, but, as has been noted, too yellow. It's almost like this was done before the current regime who've been doing the latest Warners' transfers - because all the recent titles have had perfect color. This has a yellow cast to it that just sucks all the vibrancy out of it. In fact, the DVD, which looks horrible, has slight better and more vibrant color because it lacks the yellow cast. It's such a shame because this could have been perfect with the twist of the colorist's knob. As it is it should please everyone with its incredible sharpness.

TOD Books
I was rather attached to four books growing up: The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz, Tom Sawyer, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Iliad and the Odyssey
So
L Frank Baum
Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens)
Roal Dahl (Who I called Ronald)
Homer
What was wrong with Jethro?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DR KERRY!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DONALD FELTHAM!

And the funny thing is, I had no compunction whatsoever about reading the last Miss Marple book SLEEPING MURDER. Of course, she doesn't die at the end of it.
Well, I guess I can take the copy of CURTAIN off of my nightstand! Spoilers indeed. ;)
-
ginny, now i remember the process. not much fun, i hope the lab isn't too far away.
jose, are your parents able to coordinate their visits to the lab?
-
I just found this clip of Isaac online:

i was getting motion sickness watching. he sounded nice in spite of all the distractions. obviously he doesn't only sing country.
-
Our DS Rob just called to tell us that he passed his EMT-Basic national certification exam - thanks for all the vibes!!!
Congratulations to DS Rob (but really no surprise)!

Happy birthday to a most wonderful fella, DR Kerry!

I believe Kerry wore that outfit to church last week!
-
oddly i felt better after PT today, must be the neck & shoulder massage at the end. because he knows i do all my exercises at home i don't have to do them all there. he concentrates on manipulating & stretching my arm & shoulder & doing what i can't do at home, saving time for the massage that does so much to help relieve the pain.
for those who have done PT i'm curious, how long did your sessions actually last?

Especially for our own tax guru, DR FJL...and any HHW cat owners.

Come on, George! You work in a damn library. Not one author?

bruce i think you will appreciate this college student's interesting talent, she speaks backwards.

Congrats to Rob - who has visited WOW!
Health vibes to DR GINNY and to DR JENNIFER.

Thanks DR DRUXY.....some notes at Amazon seem to favor the Korean widescreen version of 55 over the Chinese full screen version....so I bought a copy of the Korean for about $9....it should be here in about 18 days....all the way from its homeland.
-
Even if it's yellow.....THE MUSIC MAN is better than 90% of the movies being made today.....although people younger than I who have never seen a movie made before 1985 probably would not agree.
-
Thanks, DRs Laura and JRand!
-
Happy Birthday Kerry!!!

Happy Birthday Donald!!

I frankly can't recall the Miramax connection to the DVD releases. When Bill Bronston emailed me he seemed to indicate (IIRC) that the films are held by the Bronston estate and always have been, but I may just be misremembering.

Thanks Ben, I went from The Bobbsey Twins, to Nancy Drew, to the Little House on the Prairie Books. (That I know is Laura Ingles Wilder)

Ok, I don't think I can put off cleaning any longer. I'm having guests tomorrow night and need to give them a clean place to stay
-
You can read the very first
Bobbsey Twins (http://www.gutenberg.org/files/17412/17412-h/17412-h.htm)
book from 1904 entitled,
The Bobbsey Twins Or, Merry Days Indoors and Out
at The Project Gutenberg site which posts full copies of books now in the public domain
-
i could not stand the suspense of knowing if everything turned out ok and had to read the end of a nancy drew book first.
-
I must take it back, Irving Stone was not my first favorite author, Walter Farley was. I could not get enough of his books. Even more than The Black Stallion, i loved The Island Stallion. I re-read many of the books along with Bryan when he first read them.

Here are two birds from this morning:

Thank you, Ben! Now, go to bed.

Composer:
A combination of Hans J. Salter, Frank Skinner, and Paul Sawtell...basically any of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s Universal horror film music...beginning when I was in Jr. High School I would set up my tape recorder next to the television and record the title track of these films when they would play on the late, late show.

I was so rudely dragged off to cook yesterday I forgot to say Happy Birthday to DR Michael Shane!!
-
Happy Birthaday to Kerry

Happy Birthaday to Donald
-
The concert had wonderful moments as well as a few sloppy under-rehearsed ones, but it was so much better than I thought it would be. Kate Baldwin acted as one of our hosts and sang a beautiful arrangement of "Indian Summer" by Jonathan Tunick. The other singers were all from the opera and concert world, which was good for the legit things but hell for the comedy numbers: "The Streets of New York" (who the hell rewrote the lyrics?) and the Frank Daniels comedy number from THE WIZARD OF THE NILE could have used Chris Fitzgerald or Jason Graae to perk them up, but my friends Korliss and John sang the hell out of the splendid "Thine Alone."
I thought the concert, which strangely billed itself as the 150th birthday when it is actually the 151st, did a good job of balancing the classsical and popular worlds: a wonderful cellist played two movements from Herbert's glorious cello concertoi No. 2, which was so good that it inspired Herbert's friend Antonin Dvorak to write an even better one, and we got a wonderful Straussian polka "Royal Sec" and an under-rehearsed edition of the sultry habanera "Cuban Serenade," which was part of the famous 1924 Paul Whiteman Aeolian Hall concert that premiered "Rhapsody In Blue." I wonder if Herbert's "Cuban Serenade" had any part in the genesis of Gershwin's Cuban Overture?

JRAND whata lovely picture of you and your sisters!! Youl ook particularly distinquished!!

Read a few messages prior to that comment, and you'll note that we were talking about the OBITUARY of Hercule Poirot appearing on the front pages of local papers. Maybe spoilers should have been offered in 1975 when the book came out and it was in the headlines around the world.
-
TOD; Authors
Carolyn Haywood - the first book I ever tookout of thelibrary with my very own library card was B is For Betsy
I read every single book by Carolyn Haywood that the library had - over and over and over
Then there was Laura Ingles Wilder and the Little House books - all of which I still enjoy revisiting every few years
then there was Mark Twain and Louisa May Alcott and Edgar Allen Poe
-
When I went back down, I watched the four bonus features on the second disc in the LOLA MONTES set. The first one was 53 minutes and the second was 33 minutes, so they were substantial to be sure. Lots of film clips from Ophuls' various movies.
-
My favorite artist is Norman Rockwell - I love how his pictures tell a story
I was so dissapointed to recently hear that they had an exhibit of his work right here on the Island of Long and I missed it
-
So many wonderful birthday wishes! I am filled with awe. Thank you all!!!!!
-
Next, I watched today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. The boys were on, but there was very little forward movement on their storyline. They weren't in the previews though Lily and Holden were, so I'm not sure if they're on tomorrow or not.
-
I skimmed through today's ONE LIFE TO LIVE, but there was nothing of interest for me.
-
Next I watched Friday night's episode of SPARTACUS. A succession of bodybuilding hunks (with frontal male nudity; unusual even for this day and time on television) makes for lots of spectacular eye candy. We got just a glimpse of the gay gladiator in the background with his love interest.
-
Next I watched CHUCK. Nice to be able to skim through the Buy More segments though now that Morgan and Chuck's sister are going to start snooping around, that's going to be tedious. I enjoyed the caper this week.
-
Partial TOD:
Shows: I was more or less exposed to South pacific, My Fair Lady, Annie Get Your Gun, and Flower Drum Song all at the same time and fell in love with them all. Thank God for Columbia records. Still love the music from those shows.
Classical composers would have to be Debussy and Tchaikovsky. A few years later, Fantasia would expand my horizons a little bit more. Still love these composers.
Of the artists I was aware of early, I'd have to say that Renoir and Manet were my favorites. Still love these artists (among so many now). How lucky I am to have had these all in my life!
-
JRand, loved the photo of you and your sisters!
-
And I ended my evening with tonight's '24.' Better than last week's place-holding episode, but the action quotient still hasn't been amped up to match previous seasons.
-
I loved The Bobbsey Twins too! Still have a couple of the books.
-
Congratulations on Rob passing his EMT exam!!
Congratulations to Ginny for passing her blood exam!! (and may you continue to get better every day)

and of course there was always Dr Seuss
I may have told this story before, but there ya go. Betsy's brother is a film editor in L.A. and was working at some place in West Hollywood and we met him at a nearby restaurant for lunch. Gabe was a toddler and was getting restless and I said I'd take him for a walk. As we toddled around the corner we passed this EXTREMELY peculiar looking old woman, all dressed in black and with her hair just pulled back in the tightest bun you could imagine. As I continued down the street we went by a similarly peculiar stucco house, all weird curves and with no 90 degree angles in sight. I came back to the restaurant a few minutes later and was talking about the lady and the house and our waitress said I had actually passed Mrs. Theodore Geisel and the weird stucco house was where she lived!

No late afternoon UPS deliveries so it looks like tomorrow's work disc will be HUNGER.

I am tired. I have started a big rant twice but deleted both of them before posting.

somethig else for Vixdad to fix - wo't he be pleased?

Oh wait - Cilla was your open house today?
How did it go?
Your office looks great in the photos _ I like the picture your friend gave to you
-
No, it's tomorrow. I think it will go very well. I'm just in a funky mood. I'm very happy I have friends who want to come from out of town to go to it, I just hate the fact that with all the other things I have to do, I also have to clean the house well enough for overnight guests. I feel bad complaining about it. I'm just tired
-
And thanks!
-
On the good side, when this is over, my house will be much cleaner and the office is now done.
-
I have heard that cleaning is therapeutic. If that's true, why don't people pay you to clean your house?
-
Well, I better get back to cleaning so I can start getting the veges cleaned and bagged to take tomorrow.
-
Good Luck Cilla!! I hope your Open House is extremely successful!!!
(Too bad She of the Evil Eye could not come by to help you out tonight!)

Post deleted.

Back from a nice birthday dinner. I think I'll look over what I did earlier. I made a couple of changes for stupid reasons and now I'm regretting doing them. If I go into Time Machine I'm sure I can retrieve the three paragraphs I nuked.
-
I don't know if DR TD's Borders store does this, or if it's a national thing, but I have stopped getting the monthly emails telling me when I have Borders Bucks. Luckily I knew I had some for February and just went and checked online and sure enough they're there, but no email.
-
beautiful area laura. is it far from you?
Hmm. Thirty miles or so, maybe.
-
Just looked in Time Machine and it's there. But after reading it, I think it's fine having taken them out.

Whew! Finally home! Thanks for all the travel vibes---that was a loooong day!

Welcome home, Edisaurus. I bet the kitties are glad to see you.

Welcome home, Edi!
