Good morning, all! I am off to Toyland for a very short visit and to drop off some more things I've been collecting at home on various projects. When I return here, I've got to make a big dent in preparing my 2009 taxes for my accountant.

Last night I purchased ear plugs and I slept very well. Didn't hear a thing. This may be the solution to my problem with my neighbor.

My only thoughts about about yesterday's low number of posts are that since November we've had three new members, DRs KevinH, John G, and Basil who hasn't posted in about a month. I don't know if DR singdaw will ever return or what brouhaha prompted Francois' latest defection, but if every DR urged a freind to check out HHW, perhaps we'd acquire more new blood. Does the Kritzerland site have any link to HHW?

I'm off to Toyland.

Sunday - most of the snow is gone from the roads, but it is still on the lawns - and they say we will get more on Monday evening and Tuesday.

I am still laughing at what was reported here Friday that Miss Ethel Barrymore said to Elia Kazan.

Just watched FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT on TCM.  Joel McCrea is so good, and Laraine Day is as well.  I enjoy the finale aboard the plane very much.   But it is always somewhat amusing to see Gertrude Hoffman (the future Mrs Odetts on MY LITTLE MARGIE) and Roy Gordon (the future Dr Cushing from ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN) struggling on the wing of the downed airliner.

The story about how Hitch rigged up that water to come crashing through the windows of the cockpit is fascinating. Oh, the joys of movie magic!

Good morning!

It was a little nippy out this morning, but the walk was invigorating after several days away from it due to bad weather. I've had two days of walking in a row now, and I hope bad weather will stay away from the early morning so I can get in a full week of walking without interruptions.

Like bk, I have no intention of watching the Super Bowl. In years past I spent the day watching some epic. A year or two ago, I watched the silent BEN-HUR which I had never seen all the way through. Another year I watched the entire BBC PRIDE & PREJUDICE in a day on Super Bowl Sunday.

This year, I'll be working on THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW until I finish the last disc of episodes. I had thought there were eight left, but counting them up this morning, I see that I have nine more to do (there were 25 episodes this season rather than 24).

But when I'm done with the last one, THE MUSIC MAN on Blu-ray will go immediately into my player. I cannot wait to see it in high def.

I still have some DVRed shows to get to: PSYCH, THE OFFICE, SUPERNATURAL (probably my lunch program), and SPARTACUS.

If there is any time left after I watch THE MUSIC MAN tonight, I'll watch one or more of the remaining entries from last week's TV schedules.

Thankfully tonight, the networks are playing dead against the SUper Bowl, so there isn't anything to record for me.

DRs Jane and Jose, re: springform pans.

8" is my smallest. I think i have 2 others that are around 9.5" or 10". I know that high cheesecakes are popular some places. But i just wanted to make sure that everything would fit in the 8" pan. It looks small to me.

Right now the cheesecake is in the oven and then after it cools i have the fudge topping and reese peanut buttercups to put on. Hopefully the cake will go down a bit when it comes out of the oven. Right now it ballooned up to the top of the sides!

Post by: Jennifer on February 07, 2010, 07:09:54 AM
Oh and DR Jane it doesn't really say how long you have to wait to eat it. It just says to wait until it's cool to put the fudge topping. I guess you could eat it after you put the topping and that cools.

Although i'm taking my cake out at 10:15am. Maybe i will put the topping at 11:15am. So it will have from then until tonight to chill. I'm guessing that dessert won't be served till at least 8pm or 9pm.

Not within walking distance. One problem establishments like Giant have is that their pay scales generally mean that employees live out of area.

I LOVE your photo album, td! The most snow I've ever seen was in Maryland @ 1965. The drifts came up to the second story of our house and we had to climb out of the window, slide down the drift and dig our way back in to be able to get out of the house! The cars were lumps of snow on the street ---you had to dig down to find which was your car, and I was small enough to be able to walk on the crust of the snow without breaking through like the adults would. I was eye to eye with the street signs!

Nice to see you here, DR der Brucer - how are you feeling?

Probably better than expected. My 8½" zipper is healing well. Right now the greatest annoyance is the hair growing back on my chest makes any clothing irritating. I still have some numbness in the leg where they pulled the spare parts, but the doc says that's normal. Only two more days of the damned diuretic and that annoyance will be over. I guess going into this deal with low blood pressure, no weight problems, no tendency to high blood sugar, and a healthy heart muscle helped.

Here's a little easier to see version of Druxy's mystery  man.  I am stumped.

Okay, maybe it was a bit difficult...if not impossible.

It's Rod Whitaker (aka: Trevanian).

He wrote THE EIGER SANCTION among other things.

During my Freshman year at the UW, he was going for his Masters in Drama.

That year, he also conceived and directed a 1-hour local (educational) TV production of HAMLET.

John Gilbert, later of the Seattle Rep, was Hamlet, Marian Hailey (credits include the movie LOVERS AND OTHER STRANGERS , and a TV version of HARVEY w/Jimmy Stewart) was Ophelia and I played Osric.

Those were the days....

Just wanted to say that after twenty-four hours without phone, television or internet:  IT'S FRAKKIN' AWESOME TO BE BACK!
Oh, and there's twenty-four inches of snow in my yard.

I hope you had heat. And if you didn't then, I hope you have it now.

This is the very thing that makes me despise winter weather. We truly are at the mercy of the elements no matter how many precautions we take.

I got all nine of the MARY MOORE episodes watched. I did three before lunch, took a break and watched something else while I ate lunch, and then finished up the final six this afternoon.

The greatest comedy series of all time, I think. Loved every episode when I first saw them and loved every episode on this go-round.
Title: Re: THAT'S A FINE HOW DO YOU DO
Post by: Matt H. on February 07, 2010, 01:38:00 PM
While I ate lunch, I watched SUPERNATURAL Of course, I had to watch it in lowly SD since the CW affiliate preempted it for ACC basketball (and the ACC isn't even very good this year), and they recorded the SD version to show early in the morning.

Good episode, another with Sam and Dean meeting up with their parents in the past before they were actually born, trying to protect them from an avenging angel. In some ways a beautiful episode, very heartfelt as the two sons beg their mother to flee making it entirely possible they wouldn't even be born.

I had no idea what it was about, and I liked it's mystery concerning a blinded film director whose movie within the movie appears to be the wonderful WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN. Had a simply wonderful time with THE MUSIC MAN. Looked wonderful and sounded great too in DTS-HD MA 5.1 Maybe as not instrumentation into the rears as I might have liked, but that's a nitpick; it's just marvelous. Yep, blacks are the weakest thing about the transfer, but they really don't affect the look of the rest of the image; it's just tremendous.

I agree with you completely about Penelope in English-language films. I think she's still very awkward and kind of hopeless in them. I have to say, however, that I have NOT seen her Oscar-winning work in VICKIE CHRISTINA BARCELONA. I was supposed to review it last year, but the company never sent me the Blu-ray, so I never saw it. Now, I'll have to catch it on TV some time.

After I finished THE MUSIC MAN, I decided I wanted to see the other great film musical of 1962, so I watched GYPSY.

All I can say is that I cannot wait for Warners to put THIS out on Blu-ray. Even on the DVD, the picture is sharp and quite luscious. And it has true blacks that are going to be scrumptuous in HD. Upconverted, I'd have to say that this is one DVD that can really stand tall with many Blu-ray transfers.
Title: Re: THAT'S A FINE HOW DO YOU DO
Post by: Matt H. on February 07, 2010, 07:20:21 PM
And after all these years, I finally realized that Ethel Merman is featured in the movie version of GYPSY! Don't know why it had never dawned on me before, but on the back wall of the stripper's dressing room, there is a caricature of Merman rather large and easy to notice in several shots. So someone thought that would be a clever in-joke to put that up in there (a stripper's dressing room).

The 4th quarter was actually quite exciting. Although most of the guys (at the party i was at) got so crazy re: the betting pool. They are all screaming out scores that will help them win the pot.

I was so close to winning the 2nd quarter pool. But one team scored with 30 seconds left in the half. :(

But there were a few that people seemed to like.

There were some that men and my niece thought were funny. But my sister and i thought were stupid.

Megan Fox in a tub was a big hit.

The one with larry byrd and McDonalds was too.

A couple of the doritos ones were good. Some were dumb.

Everyone was laughing at the Volkswagon punching ad.

I think I am too hyped up to sleep. Or at least too sugared up to sleep.

There was some interesting food at the party.  Lots and lots of chips.

I am in love with the scoop tortilla chips. Whoever invented those is a genius.

There was guacomole (which i love).

And also a very odd but tasty dip. It was hot. And had melted: cheese, refriend beans, rice, sausage, meat and a bunch of other things.

Also someone made chilli. Someone brought KFC (which i really like and have not eaten in years). Someone also bought pizza hut which i have not had in a long time).

I went to a Superbowl Party with teh Vixter - it was held at the house of one of the kids who belongs to her church youth group -

it was the most wonderful house I ever saw in my life - the Vixter asked the pastor who was in attendance if when she died to could choose to come to this house instead of heaven

I also watched the superbowl from the 2nd quarter on - the first time I have ever actually watched the game

it really was very exciting

duringteh thirs quarter while the Colts were trying all thos e long passes  I asked the guy sitting next to me - "If the one of the Saints catches the ball is he allowed to run back towards his goal with it?"

30 seconds later guess what happened?

"Does that answer your question?" he replied ---

I tried taking credit for suggesting the idea but they insisted that the guys on the field couldn't hear me -

I found that hard to believe as they were life sized --- I have never seen a  room like this ina house  - there was a Flat screen HD TV on the wall that was the size of a movie screen -- and in front of it were four rows of  6 leather recliners - complete with armrest cup holders

If I lived in that house I would never do anything but watch TV

Vixmom, our Super Bowl parties are held in a house like the one you were in -- they have an indoor pool.

I had a nice evening at home. I got my laundry done, made dinner and watched tv.  I did some work outside today. It was in the 30s but we're going to get another cold wave so it will all freeze up again.  I did wash my gloves, scarves and hats today, so I'll be ready

Oh, it's getting late, I better get some sleep.  With everything that's been going on the past few weeks I'm a bit behind at the office and need to really crank out the work this week.  I better get some rest so I can do that

Hello, everyone.

I spent the afternoon knife-shopping. Now how many of you can say that?? I found a little paring knife, which was just what I was looking for. I also took a drive around some old haunts of mine.

I watched a very nice film tonight called THE WAR BRIDE. It's a Canadian production, available from Netflix. Nicely done. More WWII drama.

I'm glad to see DR ELMORE's post about BROKEN EMBRACES. I'd been debating whether to see it. HHW recommendations are always welcome.

DR MBARNUM have you read the June Kenney interview in Scary Monsters #73?  I ordered it today, but I sent a check since they don't have a PayPal account.

I have read it, and it is quite good. Most of the photos use in it are from my collection, in fact.

I spent the day in downtown Portland taking little Taylor and Ben to see THE TEAR'S OF JOY THEATRE's production of LITTLE ONE INCH. It was a puppet show based on a Japanese story. Very cute.

Prior to the show their was a puppet making in the lobby for the kids in attendance. Ben and Tay each made a "Kappo" puppet. Kappo, being one of the characters in the show.

After the show we walked around the park blocks and looked at statues and then up the the Portland Art Museum and checked out the sculptures in the courtyard. It was a very fun day and the kids had a blast, as did Uncle Mike (sometimes referred to as Monkey Mike).

Back home I (finally) watched the classic film INHERIT THE WIND, which I enjoyed.

While driving from Sherwood (where Taylor and Ben live) to Portland we passed through the city of Tigard, and there on highway 99W I discovered that the old Joy Cinema now plays new release Bollywood movies!

Color me happy!

I did a load of laundry this evening.  I washed my bathroom and kitchen rugs.  Exciting, huh? ;)

I'm watching "District 9" that I got from the library.  I almost forgot that it's due tomorrow, and since I don't want to get a fine for turning it in late, I'm watching it now.  There are a lot of holds on it, so I can't just renew it.  So far, it's very interesting.
