Well, you've read the notes, the notes said nothing, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently making much amoo about nothing.

Good morning, all! I need to go to the NYPL with a stop at Juilliard to make some inquiries about music in their collection. After that, I have a couple of songs to find at the NYPL and photocopy them or hand copy them. This morning I've got more tax work to accomplish.

And this may have already been noted here on HHW, but...

Very sad to hear about the passing of Dame Cleo Laine.

I thought it was her husband, John Dankworth that had passed away. I can't find anything about Cleo Laine.

I heard that Cleo Laine annouced Dankworth's death at her concert.

Good morning!

Kind of gray-white sky right now, but the bad weather isn't supposed to arrive until tomorrow, so I had a nice walk this morning. It said 26 on the thermometer, but it felt warmer than that. I could have my hands out of my pockets and without gloves and they didn't feel frozen, so I'd say more like 34 or 35.

Obviously, with February sweeps now in force, every show is putting out new episodes tonight which includes for me a new CASTLE and DAMAGES.

CHUCK is on the bubble for me. Tonight may be make or break night for sticking with it (though I do like Brandon Routh as Shaw, and he is back tonight.)

HEROES is having its season finale tonight. Of course, I stopped watching the show earlier this year, so this has no impact in my viewing tonight.

RADNELAC - a new prescription laxative

This reminds me of a fascinating little bit o'trivia my brother in law shared with me.  He is a former VP of both Glaxo and Pfizer and he now runs his own business (in NC, Matt) helping pharmaceutical companies market their drugs to doctors.  We asked him about the crazy names most new drugs have, thinking that they had big staffs appointed to come up with said names.  I have always said I'd love to have that job.  Mark told us it's actually more chaotic, typically a group of people that just toss around ideas, which then need to be cleared by the FDA to make sure the new name isn't too similar to any other drugs on the market.

Olumert -- a Norwegian dish noted for its absence of herring.

It's raining outside and sweeping up more mold and pollen to breathe. The shot seems to have helped a little but there have been two bizarre, sleepless nights. Even reading a John McPhee geology book didn't put me to sleep. Wonder if a dose of Radnelac would help.

Sad to hear about John Dankworth passing. Didn't know that he had written the theme song to "The Avengers," which remains one of my favorite TV shows.

More E&T-ness today due to tax season, but I did want to say hello.

No valid tax excuses for yesterday (Sunday); got great aisle seats for HIDDEN SKY (at Prospect, where DR Julie is on the board of directors, and she was in the audience as well), and then Julie and I went to see FANNY at Encores.  A great doubleheader, but I'll have to make up for that mini-vacation today.

Lots of folks out shopping this morning.  I am always surprised at the number of mothers with one child in the cart, one walking beside her, and one on her back or front in some kind of carrier.  And they are not triplets.

And the woman behind me in line had some kind of little bulldog or terrier which I can assume was a service dog, but I never saw that breed used as such, and she wasn't blind....so I don't know...but he was making short work of the candy on the bottom shelf and licked Brad Pitt on the front of the Enquirer.

I was just checking out the tv schedule for the Olympics (starting this friday). Unbelievably CTV (the canadian channel that has the olympics) will be moving ALL their regular programming onto their sister station (which i don't get) for 2 weeks.  They will be having almost round the clock olympic coverage.

Plus there are 2 other sports channels that will also have tons of coverage. I see NBC has very selective coverage mostly with an afternoon and evening schedule. I wonder if they will show a lot of stuff live (which is the big thing here).

Does anyone here use http://castalbumcollector.com ?  You can make a profile and create lists of all the musical theater recordings/DVDs you own and you can even make a wishlist.  I've created a wishlist of the CDs that I'm certain were among what was stolen from my garage last summer (my screenname is georged555) and when I've replaced them, I mark them as owned.  Anyway, for the last couple of days, I can't get to my wishlist!  It shows the number of titles in my list and if I search a specific title, I can see that it's in my wishlist, and I can even move titles to and from my wishlist, but I can't get to the whole thing.  Does anyone else have this problem...if anyone else uses http://castalbumcollector.com/

Before I headed out for lunch, I had time to watch a couple of shows. I began with last week's THE OFFICE. Itr was an OK outing for the show. Jim and Pam had some funny stuff. And Kathy Bates as guest star promises a grand bitch if she continues to appear.

Then I rewatched a MODERN FAMILY episode which was one of the reruns that ABC aired last night. My DVR is on SeasonPass so it recorded all of them, but the only one I wanted to see again was the Fitzbo episode which, I believe, is my favorite episode of the series so far. And I laughed so hard all over again, almost as if I had never seen the show before.

When I got in from lunch I watched HUNGER. It's a harrowing examination of the 1981 IRA-Parliament wars involving IRA prisoners in Belfast who were head-butting with prison officials. No sides are chosen by the director: both sides are shown objectively. But it's visceral to say the least.

The last hour becomes focused on IRA martyr Bobby Sands and his 66-day hunger strike to protest British treatment of the Northern Irish.

This is not a feel good movie, but it's effective, that's for sure.

I didn't quite get through all of the bonus features, but I got through almost all of them. There's an excellent 1981 BBC news program that gives a good accounting of the troubles of the time for those who were ignorant of the specific situation being addressed in the film (I wish I had seen this before I started watching the movie. I would have been better prepared for what was to come.)

And the director and star are interviewed along with a "maing of" documentary featuring more actors, the co-writer, and the producer.

As for tonight, I think after I finish the rest of the bonuses on HUNGER, I'll try THE LIST OF ADRIAN MESSENGER. Either that or THE BOURNE SUPREMACY on Blu-ray. Whichever is shorter.

Well, I see the Super Bowl broke all standing records in terms of total audience for any entertainment broadcast in the history of television. The final episode of MASH now ranks second to it.

Cool but also scary department:  Gabe is doing a paper on "Grandpa Mike," AKA my Dad, who died before Gabe was born.  There's a lot of printed information on my Dad available due to his high rank in the Army and long military career.  Anyhoo, Gabe emailed me a link today to a comment praising my father's comaraderie (sp?) with his men, obviously made by an enlisted man.   This guy said my dad removed his rank insignias so he could go to the NCO club with his guys and have beers, which sounds just like my Dad.  But I clicked on the guy's name on this post and it took me to his blog, which is a really, really scary ultra-right wing thing where he's posting about how he hopes Obama is taken hostage, etc.  Obviously he does not share my father's temperament, LOL.

Back from my busy day.  Casting session was fine - we now have our young leading man.  The authors wanted to "put him through his paces" even though I told them this was the guy four months ago.  Now they agree - what else is new?  Had a nice visit with my brother, then rushed to the mail place, the bank, then for a sandwich, and am now awaiting the arrival of Mr. Handy Man.  The gas company was here and lit the pilot light  and said that it looked like the rains had flooded the machine and that we should put it on a platform (it sits basically on the ground with a metal cabinet around it).  However, I'd also called my handy man because I thought he might get here earlier than the gas company.  It turns out by the time he got here the pilot light was already out.  He said the whole water heater was kaput and so I told him to go buy a new one (I'll be reimbursed).  He should be here shortly to hook it all up and install a platform for the heater to sit on.  And then it's right in the shower for me.

Going round and round in my head:

Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Now it's Turkish delight on a moonlit night
Every gal in Constantinople
Lives in Istanbul, not Constantinople
So if you've a date in Constantinople
She'll be waiting in Istanbul
Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it I can't say
People just liked it better that way
So take me back to Constantinople
No, you can't go back to Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That's nobody's business but the Turks
Istanbul (Istanbul)
Istanbul (Istanbul)

Oof.

DR JOSE - did the Canadian cowboy have ulterior motives?

Alas, the Canadian Cowboy - Eric - did not have any ulterior motives.  He was just fascinated by everything and everyone going on around him. -And we were all fascinated by his line of work too.  He apparently has one of the largest hog farms in all of Canada, and he also shows "cutting" (I think that's the term he used) horses - which is why he was in Memphis the past couple of days.  The more we conversed, the more drinks he bought for everyone.  He was dressed in full cowboy attired: boots, jeans, belt with a big buckle, Western shirt, and a ten-gallon hat with a silver medallion.  So, when he said he was from Canada, we all went, "Wha?!?" ;)

It was something to do after watching the Superbowl on the large screen TV in the bar area.

*Oh, and he had a great smile and some big blue eyes too. ::)

Jose - I'm also very eagerly awaiting your list of songs that the young performers are auditioning with

Well, as I mentioned earlier, it was an almost-repeat-free series of auditions over the past four days.  The woman's songs from Millie - "Not For the Life of Me", "Gimme, Gimme" and "Forget About the Boy" - each only made one appearance this time around.  However, "What Do I Need With Love?" seemed to make a comeback in the Men's auditions books.

In fact, it was the men who seemed to be in "Greatest Hits" mode:
"Run, Freedom Run" from Urinetown
"Extraordinary" from Pippin
"Mama Says" from Footloose
-I probably played/heard each of those songs at least three times each day - with "Mama Says" getting more airplay than any other song.

I did play "I'm Alive" from Next To Normal twice.  I was actually expecting that one to be a bit more popular since the vocal selections just came out.

For the women, the only real repeats were "Always True To You In My Own Fashion" from Kiss Me, Kate and "Come To Your Senses" from Tick... Tick... Boom!.

*Sadly, the one trend that seems to keep building is the use of songs by today's "Young Musical Theatre Writers" by the Women.  Basically, all belt all the time.  -At least in the cuts that people selected.  I don't dislike those songs, but they most definitely have more of a pop and cabaret sensibility to them as opposed to something theatrical.  Additionally, most of the women - and men - tend to mimic the original performers renditions - sometimes down to the vocal placement and vowels.  -Yep, Idina Menzel recorded that song.

I started with SPARTACUS. Pretty typical episode, I thought. They aren't giving Spartacus much competition despite the reputations of all the gladiators he faces. Not much tension there.

Then I watched last week's PSYCH. Not a great episode, not much of a mystery. I didn't get the murderer correct, but the clues (or lack of decent ones) were lousy.

Next up was tonight's CHUCK. It went pretty much as I expected it would go in terms of pairing off folks, but I'm predicting right now these pairs won't last. I fast forwarded through all the Morgan-sister stuff this week.

Ended the evening with tonight's '24.' Some BIG surprise action moves tonight. Wow! Looks like the show is finally kicking up into high gear after a fairly slow start this season.

Tomorrow my work project is the next Criterion release on DVD: REVANCHE. Again, not a movie I've ever seen (or heard of), so I'll be going into this totally blind.

I haven't.  Who's the author?  Does it have anything to do with The Beatles?

;)

Has anyone been watching the new show CAPRICA?

I haven't.  I loved "Battlestar Galactica," but couldn't get into the pilot episode of "Caprica."

I find the acting excellent & the script intriguing.  Still, left up to me I wouldn't continue to watch it.  We didn't know we were watching a prequel, Keith figured it out.

It is about 1960's Jackson Mississippi - "the help" are the maids - the book is written in three voices - 2 of the maids and one of the white women - very interesting book I highly recommend it

DR Jose, yes. Cutting horses. A friend of mine (whom I saw out in LA) whose family lives in north Georgia, raises cutting horses. They basically function to separate (or cut) an animal out of a herd.

I'm guessing this is not the famous Naked Cowboy from NYC. ;D

I've been watching tonight's shows, "Heroes," "Castle" and "Chuck"...in that order.

I'm starting to agree with Matt...I'm really starting to get bored with the Buy More sections in "Chuck."  Why is Chuck still working there?  Sarah works at the fake yogurt place.  If Chuck really still needs a "cover," why doesn't he quit The Buy More and "officially" work with Sarah??  I like the adventure parts of the show, though.
