Well, you've read the notes, the notes were hale and filled with hail, and now it is time for you to post until the hale cows come home from being pelted with the hail.

As promised, the new Kritzerland release - a fantastic two-fer, two scores on one very long CD, both by Kritzerland favorite Ernest Gold.  You know the routine - it's 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping paid directly via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.  Be sure to put the album title in the invoice.

Kritzerland is proud to present a new limited edition CD soundtrack – two great scores on one great CD:

CROSS OF IRON and GOOD LUCK, MISS WYCKOFF
Music Composed and Conducted by Ernest Gold

In 1977, Ernest Gold wrote one of his finest scores for Sam Peckinpah’s searing war film, Cross Of Iron.   The film starred James Coburn, Maximilian Schell, James Mason and David Warner.  Cross Of Iron encompassed many of the themes consistent with Peckinpah’s best work: betrayal, hatred of authority, redemption in the face of catastrophic adversity.  Gold’s music brilliantly accompanies Peckinpah’s memorable images – martial music intertwined with innocent children’s singing, a great and powerful theme for the James Coburn character, Steiner, and tremendous dramatic scoring throughout.  In a way, it was almost a final burst of glory for both Peckinpah and Gold.

Two years later, Gold wrote the score for Good Luck, Miss Wyckoff, a strange movie adapted from the William Inge novel of the same name.  Set in the fictional town of Freedom, Kansas, book and film tell the story of Evelyn Wyckoff, a lonely, depressed 35-year-old high school teacher, who is raped and then begins to have regular assignations with her attacker.  Audiences and critics of the time weren’t having any of it.  However, the one clearly successful aspect of the film is Gold’s score, which features one of his most haunting and beautiful themes, filled with longing and loneliness.  The score as a listening experience is wonderful, and it remains a highlight of Gold’s incredible output, which includes his Oscar-winning Exodus, as well as Inherit The Wind, The Young Philadelphians, It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Pressure Point, A Child Is Waiting, and many others.

This is Kritzerland’s third Ernest Gold release (Pressure Point and Mad World being the first two) and we are particularly pleased to be able to present these two scores in beautiful stereo sound.  Both scores were previously released on LP, and we have left the scores in their LP sequence, which played wonderfully.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98 plus shipping.

CD will ship by the third week of March – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).

Do you think using a similar model that Warner Bros is using for their on demand DVDs, that it would work for the music industry? Pressing only the cds that are sold instead of having stock that doesn't sell? Or is the limited edition of 1000 the way to go?

Oh, please, bk. Don't be so literal. I didn't mean "scary" as in frightening but rather scary because she's the anthithesis of the fresh-faced, smiling Claire we're so used to seeing. She's turned into Rousseau. Geez.

I just woke up that's where I was.

It's snowing as they predicted. How much we will get is anybody's guess. It's not a lot right now but it's supposed to snow more during the day.

We have about 5 to 6 inches of wet-looking snow here in the South of Jersey and it's either raining or sleeting out there.  Happily, I also have the day off. Unhappily, I will have to go out and do a first shift of shoveling of this stuff...

Good morning, all! Yep, the snow has landed on Manhattan. I was thinking of staying in all day, but it doesn't seem so bad outside. I may go ahead and make my trips to the Manhattan School of Music and the NYPL. When I get back, I've got two charts for Kevin Spirtas to edit.

Welcome, new DR Josh Mitchell!

DR MattH, I suspect you're stuck with at least another week of snow on OLTL. There's a lot of crap going on on that mountainside. Now that the boys are tied up in several other storylines, I've become caught up in the soap - shades of my mother in 1973 who couldn't leave the house between ALL MY CHILDREN, ONE LIFE TO LIVE, and RYAN'S HOPE!- and seeing where the story goes.

I see that Kyle and Fish are taping a public service announcement with Cyndi Lauper for a "Give a damn" campaign.

The snow has prevented me from going to work-work today.
I've already shoveled out one driveway and salted it.  This is a heavy, wetter snow, so, that IS WORK.

High winds and a bit more snow predicted for my house....time will tell.

CD ordered.  Mr Inge's GOOD LUCK MISS WYCKOFF was a paperback book that I bought in the early 1970's.  It was most provocative.  The movie was shown once on the CBS Late Movie.....that bastion of millions of commercials and clumsy edits, so I can't really claim to have seen it.

Good morning!

The "wintery mix" we were supposed to get yesterday never showed up. We got some very light rain early in the morning, and that was it. Today is very cold but simply gorgeous outside. It was 21 when I took my walk. Wore the wrong cap for that kind of cold, but I did wear a heavier jacket and was comfortable. And the wind died down during the final 1/3 of the walk, so it didn't feel as cold, especially since the sun was also out and shining by that time.

I noticed with Jay Leno off now, NBC is moving some of its shows into the 10 p.m. timeslots they'll occupy. LAW & ORDER: SVU seems to be the first there tonight. (Of course, the Olympics start in two days, so it's not really that important yet since the shows will be on hiatus for two weeks.)

I've got a backlog of stuff on the DVR already, and it's just Wednesday. I will be going down in a bit to start watching DAMAGES before I work on what's for lunch. I hope to watch last night's NCIS while I eat lunch.

But that leaves me with WHITE COLLAR and NCIS: LA from last night, and then tonight I won't get around to PSYCH or LEVERAGE or MODERN FAMILY. (I'll likely watch HUMAN TARGET and IDOL off the DVR starting around 8:30 or so).

Thanks, DR JRand, for reminding me how hilariously awful it was to watch a CBS late night movie. They used to show some great pictures (I think it's the only place I've seen Robert Altman's "Health"), but the editing was so bad and the commercials so many that you had no idea what you were watching.

I don't envy any of the rest of you with snow. We might get sleet today, which is fun because the folks here can't drive in the rain. Wish I could stay home, but that's not an option.

I fear I am leaning toward the BK camp with regard to LOST.  As I mentioned last week, I was underwhelmed with the season premiere (though Betsy loved it).  Even Betsy turned to me last night and said, "I think we've jumped several sharks now."  ;)  I'm still holding out hope, but I'm a bit crestfallen after having loved the show since its premiere.

And in other news, the credit union called yesterday to tell me that the loan has gone through and we are more or less the owners of the new house.  We actually won't close until February 26 to mitigate owed property taxes.

In the semi-funny department, the one thing the bank financing the loan was freaked out about was the shtuff the seller is leaving in the home, notably the tanning bed.  They said they had seen many sales with big televisions left, and even some with pool tables, but never a tanning bed.  So I need to write a letter stating what I think it's all worth, which they'll factor into the loan to value ratio.  It made me laugh.

I'll never forget staying up one night to watch THE DAMNED on the CBS Late Movie. It never played here, and I had read so much about it. Well, it was edited beyond all recognition.

It eventually played in a revival theater in CHarlotte in 1983 or so, so I did see it (and now have the DVD), but its appearance on the CBS Late Movie was a notorious non-event.

re: last night's AMERICAN IDOL hollywood show

I have to say i was disappointed. They spent so little time focusing on the singers. And I hate that they get rid of half after only having them sing once.

There were a few who were featured in the audition rounds who were amazing. They let their nerves get to them during hollywood and they get cut. I was especially upset about the poor country blonde girl whose first time it was on a plane. I loved her original audition (as did the judges). Obviously she was a fish out of water last night. But i really hate that they cut her so fast.

The Washington Post's Mensa Invitational once  again asked readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by  adding, subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new definition.
Here are the 2009 winners:

1. Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period of time.

2. Ignoranus: A person who's both stupid and an asshole.

3. Intaxication: Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realize it was your money to start with.

4. Reintarnation: Coming back to life as a hillbilly.

5. Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows little sign of breaking down in the near future.

6. Foreploy: Any misrepresentation about yourself for the purpose of getting laid.

7. Giraffiti: Vandalism spray-painted very, very high

8. Sarchasm: The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn't get it.

9. Inoculatte: To take coffee intravenously when you are running late.

10. Osteopornosis: A degenerate disease. (This one got extra credit.)

11. Karmageddon: It's like, when everybody is sending off all these really bad vibes, right?  And then, like, the Earth explodes and it's like,
                              a serious bummer.

12.. Decafalon (n..): The gruelling event of getting through the day consuming only things that are good for you.

13. Glibido: All talk and no action.

14. Dopeler Effect: The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly.

15. Beelzebug (n.): Satan in the form of a mosquito, that gets into your bedroom at three in the morning and cannot be cast out.

16. Caterpallor (n.): The color you turn after finding half a worm in the fruit you're eating.

Well, OLTL is screwed up today because Channel 7 is intent on updating everyone on "the snow." Hourly. It isn't that I don't applaud this public service, but we also have the Weather Channel, New York One and other sources of information. I've heard the snow news every hour since I was awake, so what the hell else can they tell you? Their advice at two? Stay indoors.

Manhattan School of Music is also closed today. I guell I'll have to play around the neighborhood. When my laundry is finished, I'll go out for a walk.

Here's a horrendous piece of news that should delight our former vice-president and his followers for a return to good ole family values:

You know what's really interesting??  The website that you linked to is from New Zealand but the guy is from Yelm in Thurston County, Washington, about 20 minutes away from where I live and work!

It really is a small world.

And Channel 2 (CBS) has gone ahead and pre-empted "The Bold & The Beautiful" and "As the World Turns" for a special Weather program.  -They'll be showing the pre-empted shows during the wee hours later tonight/tomorrow morning.

The snow has prevented me from going to work-work today.
I've already shoveled out one driveway and salted it.  This is a heavy, wetter snow, so, that IS WORK.

Heavy-wet snow, no fun at all!

I'll talk a little bit more about UPTA in Memphis later, but here's one quite memorable thing from this past weekend:

There was one auditionee who, when she announced her name, we all did a double-take - along with a little gasp and/or giggle.  She didn't announce it this way, but on her form, it looked like this:

Last Name: Pitt
First Name: Avocado

ASK BK 2

Do you think using a similar model that Warner Bros is using for their on demand DVDs, that it would work for the music industry? Pressing only the cds that are sold instead of having stock that doesn't sell? Or is the limited edition of 1000 the way to go?

It's already happening with Arkiv Music and on amazon, so it's already working.  For us, with soundtracks, the 1000 model seems to be working fine.

DR Michael S - What bk said.

I've done almost nothing today. I went out earlier just to see what it's like and for a "blizzard" it's not that bad.

I decided to go to J&R downtown to see if they had Finian's Rainbow. Barnes & Noble only had the original 1947 recording (that's a good sign I guess, it must be selling). I know I can order it on line and get it quickly but I wanted to listen to it today since I'm not going out or at work so I went downtown. The wimps closed J&R. The entire complex was locked up tight. Oh, well. I'll look at B&N again in a few days.

It was clear as a bell when Woody left for work at 6AM; but, by noon it was snow-storming away. (I'm glad he left the car and walked.) He just returned - fortunately a co-worker gave him a lift most of the way. The blondes are now outside cavorting in the South 40 - they love the snow!

My Dr. was not up for the snow and cancelled yesterday's appointment (The phone message said call later in the week and they'll try to reschedule.)

Time for rustle up some chow.

Think I'll go for poached eggs on rye toast - but two instead of three and margarine instead of butter.

Congrats on the new house, Jeff!! ;D

Nope - get my eggs just as the hen laid them.

Well, the only nice thing about the office visit delay was not having to drive down the still very snowly, bumpy country roads. There are only two things they really hurt - coughing and riding over bumps in roads. I still use my cardiac pillow to help with any coughing (I must admit I look a little silly strolling into stores and restaurants carrying a foot-round blood-red pillow by the handle!)

SORT OF SPOILER WARNING!

Well, to tell the truth, this is not a new group of players.  They are Others and they've been around since season one.  The only new people are Dagon and his interpreter (who is evidently named Lennon.)

What we don't know right now is exactly what happened to the Others during the three year period between the time the Oceanic 6 (plus 2) escaped the island and the second airplane (Flight 316) crash landed.  This group of Others ensconced in the temple seem to have taken up permanent residence there ever since being sent by Ben to escape the freighter mercenaries.  But there was also the other Others who are more docile and took up residence at the beach camp (these are the ones who followed Fake Locke and Ben to the four-toed statue foot and to Jacob.)  Hopefully, we will get the fill-in on what happened to cause this schism.

The impassable roads is one reason they are calling him in early. We live on a very long, narrow cul-de-sac. Any vehicle venturing to the house would be required to go all the way down to the dead-end in the marsh and then try the climb back up the hill to return to the highway.

I am thoroughly and completely enjoying the final season of LOST.   So I am putting some

******POSSIBLE SPOILER SPACE HERE*********

I like the sideways time line.  I like, and expected, what may have happened to Claire (although it raises a few questions about Rousseau and her team, Richard, Christian and especially John Locke).
LOST is an incredible journey to a mysterious island.  It is HOW the writers and directors are moving us along that journey that keeps me coming back for more.

*********END POSSIBLE SPOILER SPACE*********

I wholly agree with you, td!

I love the "time-out-of-whack" alternate story lines.  The paralleling of the inevitable crossing of paths for the people who survived, or were on the island as "the others", is intriguing.  Seeing Ethan treating Claire in that Brentwood hospital was eerily chilling given that we know he abducted her on the island in Season 3 (?) and took her to one of the Dharma enclaves as a patient when he was an "other".  I halfway expected Charley to turn up as a patient in that hospital.

And the writers seem to be developing the story arcs on the theory that anything that changes a timeline may NOT ultimately change the outcome that the original path was leading toward.

I spent the rest of the afternoon watching four episodes of STARGATE UNIVERSE 1.0. The adventures are all right, but I find so many of the personalities prickly and unlikable. If it weren't for David Blue's character, there would be no humor or lightness at all, and with all the doomsday stuff, they REALLY need his character. Looks like this is kind of a peril of the week sort of series, not my favorite kind.

There are lots of bonus features, too, and I haven't even scratched the surface with them, so when I go back down, I'll start on those featurettes. Then there are commentaries for each episode that I'll sample.

As for "Past Life", the opening paragraph of the New York Times review (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/09/arts/television/09past.html) contains an interesting factoid:

"There’s morbid, and then there’s prime-time morbid. Add up the shows that involve communicating with dead people or investigating how they died and you’ll find that just under half of the dramas on the big-four networks are predicated, week in and week out, on death.

"(The CW, by comparison, is the land of the living, though even there “Supernatural” and “The Vampire Diaries” contribute to the body count.)"

-I guess this genre is becoming the new "reality TV". ::)

I've done errands and whatnot, picked up two packages and have proofed another sixty pages.  Finding the usual extra words, a couple of way too long sentences, and some too-oft repeated words - the worst offenders are "meanwhile" "really" and "nice."

Rescheduling is the watchword for a lot of things this week.

Well, I sure feel fortunate that my medical needs are not pressing - I have lots of appointments but all are follow-ups and I think I'm doing fine.

Three weeks after open-heart surgery and all I have to bitch about is an itchy chest where the hair is regrowing.

That's great!

Do you buy the low cholesterol eggs?

I hope you were happy for the delay in your office visit.

Nope - get my eggs just as the hen laid them.

Well, the only nice thing about the office visit delay was not having to drive down the still very snowly, bumpy country roads. There are only two things they really hurt - coughing and riding over bumps in roads. I still use my cardiac pillow to help with any coughing (I must admit I look a little silly strolling into stores and restaurants carrying a foot-round blood-red pillow by the handle!)

der Brucer

Try buying the vege-fed chicken eggs & compare the cholesterol levels.  They should have less of the bad cholesterol.  You shouldn't need to buy the expensive eggs that advertise less cholesterol, any vege-fed should be at least as good.

The image of you walking around with the pillow made me laugh.  I probably look worse since my "outfit" makes me look like a bag lady.  Keith kind of straightened me out today before we went into Rite Aid so I looked somewhat better :D I'm really looking forward to the day I can pull clothes on over my head.

Work continues.  I've proofed two hundred pages so far.  I thought at some point I'd added something to a chapter and was beginning to wonder where it was, when I began referring to it in the past tense.  So, I guess I forgot to put it in - so, now I have to decide whether to add it (it's not that important) or not - if it's the latter then I have to delete the references

ASK BK

If you were to release The Best of Guy Haines: His Greatest Hits which 12 songs from all the songs he has recorded (solo albums and rep albums) would you chose to put on it and why

I don't know the why of it, but my favorite of the Guy tracks are When You're Alone, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, I'm Glad To See You've Got What You Want, Here You Come Again, Past My Prime, Evening Star, Terminal, Marie, You Must Believe In Spring, It Doesn't Matter Anymore, What Can You Lose, and Roadside.  Those are the twelve.

My favorite Guy Haines tracks are the following:
    1. Cowboy Waltz
    2. Terminal
    3.  Gettin' Nowhere Fast
    4. I'm Past My Prime
    5. Here You Come Again
    6. Look For A Star
    7. Be A Santa
    8.  What Can You Lose?
    9.  Pitiful Penniless Bums
   10. Two Lost Souls

What happened to THEY DON'T GIVE MEDALS?

I put the bomb under the can and set it off. The can is now somewhere in space andwhen it lands - tomorrow? - all hell may break loose. It's quite suspenseful and I am curious about the situation of the wannabe conductor when it happens. That could be any moment now. Oy!

Thanks, DR Jane.  I hate to miss the Olympics opening ceremony on TV, but figure I'll be home before they light the torch.

LOL-you just answered my curiosity as to when the Olympics begin.

Matt H.  Do you have a link for the ice skating times?

Are you interested in all four disciplines or just the men's and women's singles?

I don't have a list (yet), but I'm sure I can find one.

Now I'm going to write for a little bit and then head downstairs and put myself to bed.

Good night!

On the upper right hand side of the page you can put in your zip code and it will tell you the tv listings based on what type of TV service you have.  kind of cool

I should get some sleep.  I really had planned to work tonight but after working all day Monday and then taking a short break and working until 1:00 AM and doing the same thing yesterday, I just hit the wall about 5:00 PM today and called it a night.  Tomorrow Edith and I will do a jail visit about 2 hours away from Sioux City. I need her to translate.  We'll stop and have lunch on the way.  Then I do have to work tomorrow night on a motion and brief due Friday.  Whew!  This week has been crazy busy.  Not complaining, but as a result I decided we will be closed for President's Day.  The courts will be closed so we may as well be.

But it's such fun when an untalented upstart gets kicked in the ass!

Or put in their place.

As for the "new" (again) Facebook:

-Just click on "Friends" in the left-hand column on the FB homepage.
-Click on Status Updates... Voilà! Just like the good ole days. ;)

Thanks! It worked. The only thing i couldn't figure out how to do was log out! (why would they change that?)

Fellow figure skating fans might find this useful - I check this site frequently:

Figure Skating TV Schedule (http://heatherw.com/mk/sch.htm)

I just find it frustrating that we don't get Universal Sports.

Yeah, i don't get Universal Sports either. Looks like you could watch online before NBC got it.  I plan to see if it's online when something is on I want to watch

MattH, I agree about Alias.  So frustrating because it was so good for the first two seasons.

Good Evening!

The snow and sleet has stopped falling in New York City.  -And now the pedestrians are slipping and sliding on the sidewalks, and jumping the slush puddles.

In other news...

I really liked Present Laughter.  I thought it was well-cast across the board, and that set is truly beautiful.  I've always thought that the play has had a not-so-satisfying ending, but I liked the "encore" that was added to this production.  It really helped to end the evening in a high note.  Literally.  :)

Well I believe I can call Jose on his crazy name experience and raise him.  I have just been trying to track down a review screener for an indy film and was put through to a PR agent.  Her name?  (I swear I am not making this up):  Ima Hore.  (Pronounced Ee-ma, luckily).  I almost did a spit take over the phone when she spelled it for me.

There's also the documented:

Ima Pigg

DR George - It's just two mouse clicks each time you load Facebook.  Less than one second of your life.  Deal with it. ;)

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Dance.

I decided to try on the coat when I first directed the show in 1994.  ;D

What a coinkydink!  Tonight, I'm going to see Capital Playhouse (http://www.capitalplayhouse.com/)'s production of this very show!

And now, I'm off to the theater.  Be back later!

Tonight, I went to see a local production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.  For the most part, it was very good.  The narrator, Melissa, is a friend of mine and she can sing!  She played Evita when she was in high school and even back then she could sing.  The only problem was the sound.  All the actors had mics over their ears but it seemed liked they didn't have the mics far enough forward to really pick up their voices, so it was hard to hear some of them over the band.  Other than that (when I could hear them), it was very good.  Nice, simple costumes (except for Joseph's coat in the finale...it was huge!), the set was very colorful and they were very inventive with doors.  This show is so popular that they've extended the run!
