Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both short and sweet, and now it is time for you to post until the short and sweet cows come home.

Hmmmmmmmmmm........

Weddings were always dress up days......

I went to a Phoenix Theatre 10th Anniversary Party back in the day in black tie and everyone was very dressed up - it was quite fun.

There have also been a few dance events when everyone looks nice - like in a movie.

Good morning, all! First thing, a trip for an eye exam, followed by a visit with Wayne Barker, the Musical Director for this Equity Fights Aids event, to pick up the chart I'm doing for it. That should land me around noon wondering what to do next, so I may venture further north to the Manghattan School of Music in search of Victor Herbert songs and cello-piano music.

So far, that's my day. I also need to reschedule my taxes and call the Amherst Library. Otherwise, I will be waiting for the fallout over the problematic conductor.

Will any other DRs be watching?

And if so I"m curious who are your favorites going in?  I am in love with boston rob. I really hope that he and russell form an alliance. I would love to see them go all the way!

I'm checking out the Olympic schedule for here. It looks like events will not go past 10:30pm at night eastern time. And i guess most thing won't start too early. I was checking out sat and sun. One thing of interest for me is short track speed skating. I love watching that.

I see pairs short program figure skating is on live sunday at 7:30pm eastern.

It looks like i have at least 3 channels that will have full time coverage: CTV, TSN and rogers sportsnet). Plus french channels.

TOD:

There was the senior prom and black-tie dances during college, but beyond that, I've tried to avoid fancy dress stuff.  I'm strictly a jeans/t-shirt guy and I only wear a tie if my wife puts a gun to my head.

About the only "fancy" (i.e. black tie) event that I recall attending was back in the 1980s when my friend/client Steve Kanalt was doing DALLAS.  A CBS affiliate was opening its new facilities in San Antonio, and Steve and I flew down for the event.  I recall that the affiliate rented a tuxedo for me.

I must admit that I had a good time.

BBC Radio 2 is doing a multi-part bio of the Great American Songbook Composer

Jimmy Van Heusen Rupert Holmes (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00qll6q/Come_Fly_With_Me_the_Legacy_of_Jimmy_Van_Heusen_Episode_1/)

Episode 1 was broadcast this past Tuesday and will be up on Listen Again until the 16th of February. Click the link to listen.

Priscilla, you might be interested since your friend Rupert Holmes is the narrator of the broadcast.

Here is a description of the program from the Beeb Web site:

Rupert Holmes considers the legacy of songwriter, hellraiser and pilot Jimmy Van Heusen, who wrote many hits for Frank Sinatra.

When Jimmy Van Heusen died 20 years ago, the world of American popular song lost one of its most individual characters. Van Heusen was a man who could combine fine composition with serial womanising, and hard work in Hollywood alongside piloting his own aircraft. It's said that he gave his friend Frank Sinatra many of the elements which Sinatra used to define his own style and the 85 songs he wrote for him created a musical persona for Frank which still resonates today. And it's not just Sinatra who benefited from Van Heusen's music. His legacy is felt today, with performers like Michael Buble having notable successes with his songs.

He was born Edward Chester Babcock in 1913 and was known as "Chet" to his family and friends. He preferred music to school and worked for a time on a local radio station, composing songs for listeners. Eventually, after a name change, he made it to New York where he began writing hit songs like Polka Dots And Moonbeams. An invitation to Hollywood led to his composing songs for Bing Crosby's "Road" movies. With Sammy Cahn he wrote numbers like Call Me Irresponsible and High Hopes, which later became John F. Kennedy's theme song.

The musician, novelist and stage writer Rupert Holmes, famous for his 1979 hit Escape (the Pina Colada song) has an expert knowledge of Van Heusen. He attended the same school and is currently working on the Broadway version of Robin And The 7 Hoods, with music by Van Heusen. In programme one, he explores Van Heusen's early career and his songwriting partnerships with Eddie De Lange and Johnny Burke, which produced hits such as Darn That Dream and Swinging On A Star.

TOD:

I despise dressing up in a tux, and apart from a couple of weddings I was part of, I have only worn a tux on stage in various roles (Max in THE SOUND OF MUSIC, for example).

There was one exception. In 1982,  I was nominated as Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for Jacob Anderson in SHENANDOAH by the Metrolina Theater Association (amateur and professional companies in lower NC and upper SC vying for these prizes). I knew I wasn't going to get it, but to be a good sport, I dressed in a rented tux and went. A fellow who played Luther Billis in a local production of SOUTH PACIFIC won. Hard to win against anyone playing Luther Billis.

Other times I've been nominated for awards with various theater groups the dress has been less restrictive, and I've gone in a coat and tie which makes the evening much more comfortable.

This morning on my walk, I walked by a house three doors down from me, and an oak tree had split in half and fallen on a car and part of the house. It was a godawful mess!

On the latter third of my walk, I noticed that a wooden pole that held a street lamp and also cracked in two and had obviously fallen in the street. I guess a street crew had picked it up and thrown it onto the sidewalk for removal later.

Both of these "splittings" happened between my walk yesterday morning and my walk this morning!

For some weird reason known only to Fox, BONES is on tonight, but it's a rerun. I guess Fox didn't want to waste a new episode opposite the start-up of SURVIVOR, but BONES has more than held its own against the show this season, so I don't really understand the reasoning behind this.

I saw TO LIVE AND DIE IN LA at the theater when it first came out. I liked it well enough. I bought the DVD when it was finally released, but it sat on the shelf for a long time before I finally rewatched the movie. I wasn't as enthralled with it the second time.

I would have never bought it on Blu-ray, but it came as a part of the big Fox Blu-ray box last week (though since it's MGM, someone else got first dibs on it, and I didn't review it). I will eventually get around to watching it on Blu-ray, but there are many other movies on Blu-ray (and DVD) that I have that I'd rather watch than it.

I LOVE wearing a tux and will look for an excuse to wear one.

I guess my first fancy dress do would have been the junior prom, for which I rented a tux.

When I was going to the British Stunt Ball in London, I bought a tux.  It was a very posh affair at the Grosvenor House.  Since I have worn the tux to two WGA Awards banquets and to a premiere in Cannes.

Because I was a member of my college's Choral Society and Madrigal group, wearing a tux was almost a weekly thing for me towards the end of each semester - especially when I had to wear one for playing and accompanying recitals.  To add some variety, I would buy different tie and cummerbund sets.  Consequently, I'd rather wear a tuxedo than a suit.

While catering at Carnegie Mellon, all male bartenders had to wear a tux (rented with the university's $) for The President's Ball every February.  By the end of the evening, jackets were off and vests were on view.

Onstage, I've only appeared in a tux in THE PHILADELPHIA STORY, in August. . .but, the Lord family never sweats. . . .

My first big dress up affair was my sister's wedding in 1970. I was 5 years old and wore a white suit and was one of two kids (I forget who the other one was) who lit the candles.

I have a memory of renting a tux back in the 90s, but for what I do not recall.

Slept in late this morning. Felt good to do that for a change. Woke up to near-freezing rain and blech outside. May go back and pull the covers over my head again.

I can't remember the first dressy occasion or the most lavish, there have been a few that I have had to cover as a journalist, so renting a tux for an opera gala, etc. happened once or twice. For my prom, I was the only one with white tie and tails, while the rest were in powdered blue and burnt orange tuxedos. I do recall that being strange. I also recall covering the opening of the Armand Hammer exhibit at the University of Kentucky a few years later. Hammer and his wife were there, as was Phyllis George, then the first lady of Kentucky. I thought that was something spectacular, but more because of Hammer's beautiful art than the people. If you have a room full of Corots and Fragonards and even a Rembrandt or two, who cares about the people?

That said, give me jeans any day.

Just from memory rob mariano was on his original season of survivor. And then he was also on survivor all-stars, where he met his now wife amber. They were the final 2. Then they did do THE AMAZING RACE. And did quite well on that.

And now he is on heroes vs villains. I disagree with putting him in the same category as jerri manthey. I think Boston rob is a fantastic survivor player. He is competitive, athletic and hilariously funny.

TOD:

I guess the first "fancy dress" was when I was dressed as Bobby Shafto (complete with silver buckles) for a dance recital when I was about 5 - the next year I had to do a tap routine in tux with a cane :(

First of-my-own-free-will dress up was probably the end of season formal ball at the local service club that provide ballroom dance instruction (I was 13).

I wore a Tux for my Little Theatre debut in Time Out For Ginger (age 15).

During High School years my Tux got some use at various Debutant Balls and Rainbow Girl cotillions, etc. (Teenage boys who were good dancers and dressed up well were in great demand!) I even tied my own bow-ties!

Of course, college years at Annapolis were filled with formal affairs including Kennedy's Inaugural Ball.

My wedding was a black-tie evening event.

My in-laws made sure my wife and I were trotted out for numerous Military-Industrial Complex formal events in DC.

Both my stint on the Board of Directors of the International City Theatre of Long Beach and with the national Log Cabin Republicans kept Woody and I both in tuxedos for a few years. (The tuxes hung in the closet right next to my motorcycle club uniform; my "unmentionables" required for my reign as Empress de Motorcycling de Los Angeles were kept in the garage.)

TOD - my first real dress-up affair was my sister's wedding when I was 11 and served as junior bridesmaid (too old to be a flower girl).  In addition to the fact that I wore a custom-made dress and dyed-to-match shoes, the day stands out as my first appearance in nylon stockings.

At the University of Michigan, my friend Doug and I decided to attend the gala grand opening night of the Power Center for the Performing Arts, for which I bought a black and white print dress that was slit up both sides almost to the hips and came with a pair of long swishy black pants to wear underneath.  The evening was magical with a dedication ceremony, the conferring of honorary degrees on Nancy Hanks, Helen Hayes, James Earl Jones, Walter Kerr, Jo Mielziner, and Julius Rudel and the premiere of the musical THE GRASS HARP.

Now this was the early 1970s and for a subsequent theatre date, Doug dared me to wear the same dress, not with the long pants underneath, but with black "hot pants," which I made myself and had the figure for back then.  I think I wore that outfit to Detroit's Fisher Theatre to see PURLIE.

Of course, Richard and I both selected special outfits for our wedding.  My veil cost more than my dress, because I bought my dress "off the rack" at a local department store.  I really think it was a rejected special order for something like an Eastern Star initiation, but sort of looked like Princess Leia's dress in STAR WARS.  Richard drew inspiration for his attire from Lord Peter Wimsey's wedding outfit in Dorothy Sayers' BUSMAN'S HONEYMOON.

Topic of the Day:  I've never actually been to a fancy "dress" event, but when I was in the Western Washington University concert choir, the men had to wear tuxes.  And for the one wedding that I was in (my sister's), I wore a suit.  Otherwise, the only "fancy" clothes that I wear are when I'm in a show and my character needs to be dressed up.

I thnk the fanciest affair I've attended was the 1st year party of SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE; the show had just won the Pulitzer and I made the guest list because of my Pulitzer connection. My friend friend Snooky Barton, from my hometown, was my date and we both looked fantastic. the party was great and i got really stoned on the host's excellent pot.

I agree about ROB (and AMBER), Matt, though I must admit Rob makes me laugh a lot of the time.

Vibes to TCB.

I think the edition of SURVIVOR he was on the first time was the last season of the show I ever watched. I hated him so much and just decided I was WAY too involved with these people. I haven't watched a second of the show since that season.

For some reason i think that he was meaner on the original season he was on. I loved him from all-stars.

As I said, I know you love him and will find all the reasons in the world to support that. To each his own. I'm glad you like him and enjoy the show. I think he and Jerri Manthey are TWO PEAS IN A POD: folks who'll do ANYTHING to keep their celebrity status going including appearing in endless variations of these SURVIVOR "all-star" seasons.

Before I headed out to lunch, I had time to watch last night's MODERN FAMILY, another hilarious episode. The real strength of the show is that all three families have the potential to be hilarious. You aren't ever stuck on one hoping for the switch to another of the families. One third is equally as strong and funny as the other two-thirds.

When I got in, I watched the remaining four episodes of SG-U 1.0 (which is why I'm about 20 minutes late logging on). None of the episodes changed my mind about the show being only a slight notch above mediocre at best. And the episode "Time" (patterned somewhat on CLOVERFIELD) was really lame. I really hated that episode.

I sampled all of the commentaries while I was watching the shows (nice to be able to switch audio tracks on the fly). These are not great commentary tracks, and when nothing but actors are present, they're too chatty and chummy to give much background information about the making of the episode.

Maybe over the weekend, I can get the scene from THE SOUND OF MUSIC, copy it to disc, and take a still frame to send. I know I never had a picture of any of the weddings or that one adult wearing of a tux.

I have some pictures from dance recitals as a kid in a tux (sewn by my mother who made all my costumes back in those days. I'll see if I can find one of those).

I remember when i was about 10 getting dressed up in a matching purple dress to my sister and attending my uncle's wedding.

For graduation I remember we all had very fancy dresses. I still have mine but would never wear it. It was sort of an aqua green/blue.

As an adult i was maid of honor for my sister's wedding and had a really nice navy dress.

John G., I thought you wrote near-freezing rain and bleach outside.

T.O.D.

I think my first dress up occasion was my sister's wedding.  I gave the bride away.

I have worn tuxedos in so many different productions that I finally bought my own about 15 years ago.  Since then I have taken it on numerous cruise ships, and used it in about twenty different Murder Mystery Dinners.

Actually the most hoity-toity event I have ever attended didn't require a tux.  That was the night I served as escort and dinner date for Colleen Dewhurst.  I wore just a standard suit and tie.

Here it is, DR TCB....the spiffy red handkerchief is NOT a separate piece....it is the lining of the pocket that you can pull up as a handkerchief.

My nifty Robert Wagner Tuxedo - for After Six - was a whole $10 on EBAY two years ago, description said there was a small hole in the shoulder, but I was buying it to wear in SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, so I got it.....small hole was a pin hole.....I had to look closely to see it.

You can barely see the red handkerchief in my pocket, but it matches the lining in the jacket....worth all of $10 + $10 shipping.

Speaking of eyes.....

Around 1:30 AM I woke up with a terrible pain in my right eye.  You know how much it hurts when you accidentally get poked in the eye, well that is nothing compared to what I felt.  It was so painful I had to fight not to cry, until I thought go ahead tears will be good, and cry I did with deep sobs.  Just so you know, I never cried throughout the shoulder ordeal, yell out yes ;D.  This really hurt!!!  Of course I upset Keith & Sherlock.

After half an hour in the bathroom alternating drops & a hot washcloth on my eye, I finally sent Keith back to bed & shortly followed him once my vision returned enough to calm me.  Keith had been able to pry the eye open & couldn't see anything.  At first it was very red and then it was fine, not even any swelling.

My eye still hurts, though very tolerably & the right side of my nose keeps running.  It was very stuffed last night.  Keith thinks maybe the pain is from my sinus.  It is the most logical exclamation I can think of.  At first I thought I had poked my eye while sleeping, until I remembered I can't move my right arm to do that.  It would be difficult to do that with my left arm.

Such disappointing news from the wire services regarding Sarah Palin:

News/Washington Post survey released today reflects growing public misgivings about Palin. Her favorability rating sank to 37 percent, the worst showing so far in this series of polls. The figures reveal she's lost support even among conservative Republicans. Palin's "potential as a presidential hopeful takes a severe hit in the survey," the Post said.

If I have read the info correctly there will not be any ice skating until Valentine's Day.

I think I'll program ice skating into my DVR instead of Olympics.  Has anyone else done that?

I wish I had a photo from my first dress up day.  The Christmas before my brother's Bar Mitzvah my father's dear, dear friend Joe Stanley & his wonderful wife gave my sister and I beautiful matching dresses.  I have special memories of wearing the dress for my brother's Bar Mitzvah.

This is the perfect time for this memory as the wonderful wife was an Olympic diver who taught me how to dive.

From the schedule it looks like the pairs short program will be sunday at 4:30pm pacific time.  The pairs free skate on monday and the men's short on tuesday.

Can you program skating into your DVR? I know i can't do that. But mostly because a) the show will be scheduled simply as olympics and not as skating and b) NBC will probably go back and forth between a number of events in that timeslot.

If you guys have alternate channels showing just one event at a time then maybe it would work.

I got the bonus features all watched on STARGATE UNIVERSE. The second disc had the same set-up as disc one: 17 very short featurettes about various aspects of the show's production and interviews with some principal actors. And some especially staged scenes by the cast in character as a spy orb circles around the ship eavesdropping.

I skimmed through today's ATWT first. Nothing of interest at all and nothing in the previews for tomorrow. It's good CBS is putting this show out of its misery in September.

Next I watched this week's WHITE COLLAR. I enjoyed the show very much,

and even though I guessed immediately that the weeping woman was the culprit in that early scene, I still found the episode most entertaining.

Last night's UGLY BETTY was next. I thought the designer Betty discovered had NO talent at all, and the burned, ratty look was even worse. Yikes!

I did enjoy seeing Claire's son again. I guess he'll be with the show for the rest of its run. I hope so, anyway. Might even make a good boy friend for Amanda. Or Betty. (Those are not spoilers. I know nothing.)

I finished out the evening with tonight's GREY'S ANATOMY. I enjoyed this week's show much more than last weeks mainly because the patient stories this week were gripping and poignant.

Alex and Lexie jumping on each other and Miranda being paired up with that obvious love interest were VERY predictable and par for the course for GREY'S. Still, I hung around because I did enjoy the patient stories.

She went to see him in South Dakota to identify herself as his mother, but she couldn't go through with the revelation even though she did see him and left him a big tip where he was working. I think that was late last season.

John G., I thought you wrote near-freezing rain and bleach outside.

That would have been a more white-washed day than it actually was. And it never warmed up and it never stopped raining for very long. Tomorrow: More of the same.

We are in total agreement :D  Extremely funny episode.

Another "agreement"!  -And the kids - young actors - on the show are amazing (too)!

DR Jane - Sounds like severe sinus pain to me.  If it recurs tonight, call you doctor first thing in the morning. (If you haven't already done so by the time you read this post). ;)

*And that was from a restaurant out in Flushing, Queens, called "Northeast Taste Cuisine" - or something like that.  They just got a nice mention in the New York Times in an article covering food from the Dongbei region of China.

The fried dough - which is like a pāte choux dough - is stir-fried(?) in a wok with a generous sprinkling of granulated sugar.  The sugar eventually melts and caramelizes.  The dish is then brought to your table along with a bowl of ice cold water. You take a piece of the caramel-coated dough, dip it into the cold water, and... The sugar coating becomes crackly and crispy, while the dough remains hot and doughnut-like.  DEE-LISH!!!  There's also a version of this done with battered and coated pieces of apple, sweet potato and/or taro root.

Back from dinner with Barry Pearl and seeing a very bad production of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.  I hadn't seen the show before and I'd imagine it would be funny if comic actors were doing the roles.  Although I got irked at all the little self-referential theater jokes that were so stupid and pointless - I cannot care about characters when they say things like, "I have to come back to see if I have anything to do in act two."  Sorry, bad laugh, and even if it were a good laugh it's the wrong laugh.  I found the score very repetitious but that could be the bad band.
