Title: MELON BALLS
Post by: bk on February 13, 2010, 12:17:08 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were melon-like and had balls, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently having moolon balls.

Topic of the Day:  growing up, my mom would make either cheese-and-mayo or bologna-and-mustard sandwiches for me.  I liked either.  Then one time, my sister's then-soon-to-be-future-ex-husband made me a cheese-mayo-bologna-mustard sandwich and it was good.  I haven't had one in quite a while, though.

That's probably my favorite "comfort food" sandwich.

Today, my niece and I will be spending the day in Portland!  She wants to go to a bakery called Sweet Pea (or something like that).  I don't know if it's just organic or if it's a vegan bakery (my niece is vegan) and the only day that they sell donuts is Saturday...so we're going to Portland to get organic or vegan donuts.  And we'll also do some other shopping, I'm sure, but we'll be gone most of the day.

Have a good day, all!

Good morning, all! I am up early because I have a morning (only, I hope) at Toyland, followed by a stop at the NYPL before I head home to work on my Broadway Fights AIDS number, which will be sung by Gary Beach. Tonight at 5:30 I have a rehearsal with William Hicks and Jerry Grossman, first cellist of the Metropolitan Opera, to run through the piano-cello music I collected at the Library of Congress.

When I get back from that, I have to pack: I will E&T from tomorrow afternoon through Tuesday on my junket to Emily Dickinson's hometown Amherst. I am quite excited about this, since I'm going to the college library to see their Samuel French Collection and examine what they have pertaining to Jerome Kern's two 1917 shows, OH BOY! and OH, LADY! LADY!

My favorite sandwich is a scrambled egg on whole wheat or 9-grain bread with a bit of ranch dressing, alfalfa sprouts and fresh watercress. It's quite tasty. I also like good ol' tuna salad on the same breads with a melted slice of cheddar cheese.

I didn't stick with the Opening Ceremonies last night......I cut out about 10:00.....went back to watch the American athletes come in....sorry it's seems I missed the best part.

As everyone was coming in and the Indians and the kids in white were dancing - and dancing - and dancing......I was reminded on the time I was on some float for something.....I don't remember if it was for the 500 Race or what.....but traffic stalled and it was three hours of dancing to Bent Fabric's "Alley Cat" - and I still can't listen to the song without going into a trance and just dancing....and dancing.....and dancing.  That one guy in white was doing primarily the same steps I did.....

Saturday morning greetings!  Today my AAUW friends are having a luncheon at The Manchester Inn (http://manchesterinn.com) with a program by a librarian who received a grant from AAUW national to organize book clubs for teen girls.  In conjunction with today's program, my local book club on Thursday is having a Young Adult Literature Roundtable for which each member has selected her own YA book.  I'm reading BK's Adriana Hofsteter mysteries and looking forward to telling my book group friends about them.

Greetings from Toyland! I'm listening to the 1997 radio broadcast of the Utah Festival Opera production of Frank Loesser's GREENWILLOW that I worked on. I haven't heard it since around 2000, and it sounds fantastic. It was a beautiful production and one of my happiest work experiences. Dennis Buck did some wonderful underscoring and it was a lot of fun to orchestrate. I remember that we had to put the 3rd horn part in the first trombone book since the orchestra had only two horns, and the 2 trombones went to the orchestra's trombone 2 & 3. I had gone to Utah for two weeks to prepare the materials and to be around through the orchestra's sitzprobe on July 4. I got back to New York, got the request to rescore "Coulda Been A Ring" from Jo Loesser, along with a request I get back to Logan, UT, till they opened. Before I flew back, I had the copyist in New York transpose "Never Will I Marry" for the wonderful young tenor playing Gideon Briggs, and went back for two more weeks to open the show. It was such a great experience. Something wonderful should have happened with that production.  The director Vince Liotta is now in the opera program at Indiana University and one of the best directors I've ever worked with.

Good morning!

It was still snowing when I went to bed, and overall we got 3 inches of snow. It's simply gorgeous outside this morning, but, of course, I did not take my walk nor will I until there is substantial melting. It's still very cold out so no melting this morning. The forecast said we may get more snow on Sunday night. Oh, joy!

I love open-faced hot sandwiches. I had my first ones (a turkey and a roast beef) on my first trip to NYC in 1958, and I still love them.

As for a weird combination, I love to take two slices of bread, put peanut butter on one and butter on the other, heat them up in the toaster oven, and then eat them together. The combination of real butter and peanut butter is magical to me. Of course, it's SO bad for you that I can only eat one of these every six months or so, but I do love them.

bk - A real(!) Cuban sandwich would not be served on pita!  -Just sayin'.  -And the addition of salami is usually only for an especial.  Otherwise, the classic components of a Cubano are roast pork, ham, swiss cheese, pickles and mustard "pressed" in Cuban bread (or, in a pinch, a French bread loaf).

This 3 day weekend I am going to try to finish up the set of M SQUAD episodes that I started many months ago. I enjoy seeing the various guest stars (lots of B movie actors), but tire very quickly of Lee Marvin's scene chewing. I have never in my life witnessed and actor who overacts SO much.

As for the Topic of the Day... The Amazing Edition:

I still remember the first time I had a Monte Cristo Sandwich. It was in the cafeteria at Coast Guard HQ in Washington, DC, during one of my college summers when I was clerking there.  The cook's would have a "Daily Sandwich Special", and one day it was a Monte Cristo, so...

Turkey, Ham and Swiss Cheese between two pieces of Bread, then dipped in egg batter (basically French Toast), then Deep-Fried(!)... Then doused with Powdered Sugar and served with Grape Jelly.

WOW! and YUM!

Consequently and subsequently, every Monte Cristo since then has continued to pale in comparison. -You never forget your first time.

QUIETUS is an honest to goodness name for an over the counter drug to battle tinnitus.

Better for tinnitus than flatulence.

A little old lady goes to her doctor's office.  "Doctor, " she says, "I have a very strange problem with gas.  I'm farting all the time!  But the odd thing is that my farts are silent and they don't smell at all.  In fact, I've farted about ten times since I've been sitting here talking to you.  But you wouldn't know it, because they made no sound and there's no smell to them."

The doctor thought for a moment then began to scribble on his prescription pad.  "Have this filled out at your pharmacy and take two tablets a day.  Then I want to see you again next week."

The little old lady strictly followed the doctor's orders and, the following week, was once again sitting in his examination room.

"Doctor, I don't know what was in those pills but now my farts smell something awful!  They are still silent but--Oh, my!--they now smell terrible!"

And the doctor said, "Very good!  We fixed your sense of smell.  Now we have to do something about your hearing..."

Generally, I like a smoked turkey sandwich with either Swiss or provolone on a good hearty rye or kaiser roll.  I always like both mayo and Dijon mustard on it.

I used to love getting the Cajun Crab Cake sandwiches at LeBus in Philly.  But they haven't made them in years.  I sometimes get the Crab Cake sanwiches at DiBruno Brothers in the Comcast Center, but they are a little on the bland side, even with the red pepper aioli.

I enjoyed last night's Opening Ceremony very much.  True, it wasn't China, but it was a very nice program.  I thought the Flying Prairie Boy segment was incredibly beautiful.

DR Jennifer, I thought the girl who sang the Canadian national anthem started out very weak but ended nicely.  Of course, my favorite was k.d. lang.  Her "Hallelujah" had me close to tears.  Likewise, the moment of silence for Nodar Kumaritashvili.

It was a shame that the lighting of the cauldron didn't go as planned, but if they had raised the other three pylons sooner I don't think anyone would have noticed anything was wrong.

And like, DR Jose, I have to roll my eyes at the use of autotuning in the new "We Are The World".  The purpose of this song was to raise voices together to support (and raise funds for) the people of Haiti, not so Li'l Wayne could sound neat.  Plus, there's an overall slickness to the video, with the performers singing their parts with various expressions of angst.  And juxtaposed to the slickness, the sloppy insert of Michael Jackson singing with an out-of-sync sister Janet.  Sheesh--it's suddenly an MJ tribute!

Quincy, next time just let them sing the song! (The living people, that is...)

I just finished watching the entire 7-minute version of WE ARE THE WORLD, which was released today at 2:00 p.m. EST.  It was certainly an improvement over the three-minute mishmash they showed last night on the Olympics; but it still not very good.  I agree completely with Jose regarding the need to enhance several of the vocals in order to include them; not to mention one very loud soloist who could only have been improved had they enhanced (or cut) his voice.

I am sure that it will make billions of dollars from downloads, but not one thin dime from me.  The other interesting fact about the full version is that the seven minute song, is then replayed over the seven minutes of credits.

Then I guess you haven't seen Mr. Marvin in CAT BALLOU?

Still up in the air.  If all goes according to plan, we will officially close on February 26, but our plan is to actually stay here until this house sells or the end of the school year.  We will probably move a ton of stuff out of this house and into the new house in early March to make this house "show" better.  But if you'd like to come down and be our official new housesitter, I'm sure something could be arranged.  :)

Last night, I watched MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW, perhaps the most heart-breaking movie I've ever seen.

It's also one of the finest films to come out of Hollywood's Golden Era.

The really sad thing about it is that the story is just as relevant today as it was back in 1937 when the picture was made.  Indeed, it's probably even more so.

I think due to budget constraints they would not even try to do something as elaborate as some past opening ceremonies.

I thought nikki's jazz version of the national anthem was very different and unusual. But i thought she looked amazing. This is a girl who started as a young girl singing at montreal's jazz festival. I don't think she is more than 16 now. But she sure looked grown up.

I love love love garou. Doubtful most people would know him. BUt he played Quasi in Notre Dame De Paris.

Yeah it was too bad about the malfuction!

If you have about forty minutes, total, this is truly incredible.  I thought I would check it out quicly, and then move on; but I was hooked.  If you start with Part 3, I think you will want to see it all.

Win Perkins, a real estate appraiser who specializes in airport properties, has posted on his Web site a video he created of Charles Lindbergh's famous and risky takeoff in the Spirit of St. Louis.   According to Perkins, this is unlike any other presentation of the takeoff footage.   Perkins said he "painstakingly assembled news footage from five cameras that filmed Lindbergh's takeoff from Roosevelt Field, Long Island" and "mixed it with enhanced audio from the same newsreel sources."

After you watch the "Takeoff Video (Part #3)", be sure to 'click' on "Contact" on the Left side on the web page to view all of the Videos "Parts #1 thru #4".

My hunch is that after you watch the "Takeoff Video (Part #3)" ... you will want to see the others.

And then, ask yourself: "Would I have had the guts to have done it?"

To get primed for the Olympic skating, I rewatched the ladies national championships again starting with the girls ranked 10-7 after the short program. None of themwere ready for the big leagues. (Of course, Alissa Cizny, who somehow won last year's national championship, is the primary reason we only got to send two girls to Vancouver this year instead of our usual three representatives. She scored so poorly at the Worlds last year that it cost us a slot.  She skated very poorly at this year's Nationals, and finished well out of contention. Deservedly.)

How much is that puppy in the window? It's not for sale.

Those worried about the number of designer dogs ending up at California shelters will be heartened by the news that the West Hollywood City Council is moving closer to approving a ban on certain kinds of pet sales. According to DVM Newsmagazine, the city council members approved upon "first reading" an ordinance proposed by council member Jeffrey Prang that prohibits the sale of dogs and cats within pet stores. The ordinance must undergo a second reading next week and, if approved, will take effect in March.

Post by: bk on February 13, 2010, 05:08:06 PM
Started out having some breakfast, then moseyed on over to the Hollywood Show.  For the first time EVER there was a line and it took twenty minutes to get in.  It was jammed, and I have to say the lineup was not even that great.  So, the new owners are obviously getting the word out.  However, they have literally sucked the fun out of the show.  I walked into the main room and was shocked to not see the usual rows of tables.  Now each celebrity has their own table and there are black curtains on either side of them, boxing them in.  I found that completely nauseating, and it makes it impossible to see who is where.  As a signer, I would feel totally isolated, like some kind of circus animal in a cage.  Apparently many complaints were lodged and I hope they come to their senses.  This show now feels nothing like it used to.  I will say that Jill Schoelen looks great.  I also said hello to Helen Reddy and we had a really nice chat - I bought her autobiography, which she inscribed to me.

I'm back from a rehearsal of cello-piano pieces by Victor Herbert and Jacques Offenbach with Jerry Grossman, principal cellist of the Metropolitan Opera. We ran through all of the Herbert pieces I've found aso far and about half the Offenbach before Jerry had to run back to the Met for tonight's performance of CARMEN.

The rehearsal was wonderful, and I suspect most of what we heard had not been played for nearly 100 years. I am quite excited about this project and hope it progresses well. Now I have to get some din and pack.

I know and agree.  I can't stand PETA.

I just read Weir is afraid to go out of the Olympic compound due to threats.  I don't think they throw blood at you unless you have the fur on.  I thought his comment was why he removed the fur from his costume.  Since he did remove it, he should be ok now.

I had a very active day.  I dusted, even using my right arm at times.  I used the dust cloth to slide my arm out as far as possible on the furniture.  I did well with my exercises.  I tied my shoe laces even if I had to have Keith re-tie them.  I didn't need as much help from Keith to change the sheets & I put the pillows in the cases on my own.

On the hike he said my pace was very good & he noticed I had more stamina, also at times my arm swung like a normal person's.

We then came home & Keith gave Sherlock a shower, with assistance from me.  I couldn't use the towel to wipe him though.  I was able to clean up after.  I'm drying the last of the towels now.

My evening exercises went better than the morning exercises. :)  The therapist has been giving me more & more to do.

I think the threats against Johnny Weir (the US Figure Skater) because he wore fur are ridiculous.  Can someone explain how death threats against humans helps the cause of not killing animals?

Perhaps I am the only one who thinks that the threats against Johnny Weir seem a bit convenient.  Mr. Weir loves the spotlight, and perhaps his showing in Spokane made him scramble to put himself back on the front page.

I did consider he is using it for attention.

Johnny went out of his way to let the press know that the ugly dab of fur on his shoulder was "real fur."  Otherwise, I doubt anyone, including PETA would have noticed it.

Interesting considering complaints regarding the fur on his costumes have been lodged before.  This has nothing to do with the situation, however, overall I don't care for his costumes.

Where do they get the blood from?

LOL-I have no idea.  I don't think I wanted to know ;)

When PETA was still fairly young I donated to them, to my regret.  As I became aware of some of their outrages practices I called to discuss my feelings about some of them, including the fact they wanted to make all pure bred dog breeding illegal.  I discussed the need to focus on puppy mills & spay & neuter.  I wanted to donate to those specifically.  Basically they told me to shove off & hung up on me.  They then took me off their mailing list.

I'm looking forward to seeing it on Monday.

Have a box of Kleenex handy.

So I've heard. I LOVE this kind of film, so I'm looking forward to it even more.

I began my evening with today's work project: HUNGER on Blu-ray. It's a brutal film, but I have to say the Blu-ray transfer is the best color one from Criterion that I've seen. Nothing showy or overly contrasty about it - just a solid, clear, precise image with great detail.

I enjoyed seeing the movie again.

I just sketched out our proposed driving trip this summer to visit Betsy's parents at their cabin in Northern Wisconsin.  It works out to:

Portland to Spokane
Spokane to Livingston, MT
Livingston to Bismarck
Bismarck to St. Paul
St. Paul to Minocqua

Longest day is 7.5 hours which I think I can handle.  A couple of 5 hour days, which is perfect.

BK, the new set-up at the Hollywood Show sounds awful, it's the mingling and overlap that makes it fun.  Did any the stars complain about the isolation?  How were the dealers?  Doesn't sound like the good old days, and you were right about the line-up...not that good.  Peter Harrington has always been outrageous.  Were the folks from Nigel Williams there?

Today, my niece and I went to Portland, the main reason was to go to the SweetPea Baking Company, an vegan/organic bakery.  They sell donuts, but only on Saturdays.  My niece wanted to try them (and get some for Valentine's day tomorrow for her and her mom).  I had a raspberry glazed donut and a custard-filled, chocolate glazed donut.  They were very good.  We both also had a vegan grilled cheese sandwich, which we ate there.  They used soy cheese, but my niece said that it's better than what she's been able to get here in town.  It was actually pretty good.  We had absolutely no trouble with traffic and the directions got us to our destinations very easily...no unintended side trips.

Afterward, we went to the Lloyd Center mall.  We mainly just went there to walk around, but my niece ended up going ice skating.  I've never gone, and today was not the day to try it out.  There were too, too many kids all around.  My niece said that some kids skated in the wrong direction.  How rude!  While we were there, I bought some CDs at Barnes & Noble.  I now have new copies of the original Broadway cast recordings of A Chorus Line (with the new extended sections), Company (with the Larry Kert bonus track), A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (with Laurie Beechman as the Narrator) and the 2-CD reissue of both the on and off-Broadway recordings of Hair (which was on sale for only $10.99).  Actually, two CDs cost $12.99 and the other three cost only $10.99 each...and no sales tax!  Nice!

When we got back to my sister's house, we ordered calzones from a local pizza place.  I got one with pepperoni and it was very good.  It was so big (and I wasn't quite hungry yet, after the vegan grilled cheese and the breakfast that I got before I even picked up my niece) that I could only eat half.  The rest is now in my fridge, waiting to be my lunch tomorrow. :)

Just finished proofing and reading and boy did I have an interesting reaction to the last twenty-nine pages - reading them, I knew instantly what had bothered Margaret about them.  We thought we'd solved it, but I can see the problem she had so clearly now and can't wait to discuss it with her.  My gut feeling is I'm going to do what my instinct was when she first brought up how she felt - cut the twenty-nine pages down to about five to ten pages and make them part of the book's epilogue.  I think that's going to solve her problem completely and I think it might just be the right thing to do.  As I went through those twenty-nine pages I just got really impatient.  The stories are all good and the kernels of them will remain, but not in the book proper, which just seems to want to end at the place where she began having problems.  In any case, we shall see what we shall see.  One way or another, this twenty-nine pages is getting cut by two-thirds.

Trust me...you need to do this...it is hilarious...Call the Nestle Hotline at 1-800-295-0051. When asked if you want to continue in English or Spanish, wait quietly for about 10 seconds and I PROMISE you will smile. Keep going and press 4. Then press 7. Don't ruin the surprise for ...others. :) Seriously... makes you want to purchase stock in the company!

After you hear the option to press 4, you can actually press any number from 1-7.  But after you listen to the selected option, it ends the call and you have to start over.  I highly recommend it for a few moments of funny! :D

If you have about forty minutes, total, this is truly incredible.  I thought I would check it out quicly, and then move on; but I was hooked.  If you start with Part 3, I think you will want to see it all.

http://www.airportappraisals.com/

I haven't watched all four parts, but part #3 is pretty cool!

Good Evening!

So...

I walked into City Bakery earlier this afternoon, and Maury Rubin, the owner and CEO of City Bakery - a.k.a. The Hot Chocolate Wizard - stops me...

"You've been here almost every day, haven't you?"
-Well, I did miss a couple of days last weekend when I was out of town.
"Do you know what flavors you missed?"
-Well, I know that the Banana Peel is coming back. I'm not sure about the others.
"Well, since you're one of the "chosen", just check which flavors you missed, and if there's anything you'd like to try, just ask.  I'll mix it up special for you."

There are some truly strange mis-categorizations on/in iTunes.  I remember a Classical Vocal recital being listed as "Alternative".

*I also like(?) how the cover art for Lone Star Love or the Stokes revival of Man of La Mancha seems to be the default artwork for a slew of albums.
