Good morning, all! I am nearly packed for my trip to Amherst, home of Miss Emily Dickinson, and I hope I have a great time with my friend Joseph Rubin. Bruce Pomahac wanted to come along but he had other plans. The reason for my trip is that I had been thinking about going to look at the Samuel French collection for some time and, when I heard that Joseph was renting a car and driving up, I invited myself along. I met Joseph through Bruce Pomahac, who had befriended Joseph and his mother when he was still a high school student in Canton, OH. Joseph is now a grad student in theatre production at NYU and he's currently working on an edition of the original 1902-1903 WIZARD OF OZ. I am acting as adviser and music editor for him and encouraging his research into early American musical theatre and restoration. Someone has to take over when I'm gone, and I could not ask for two better heirs than Joseph and Joshie.

I have my scores for OZ all packed up since I have things to talk to Joseph about and we've got plenty of other things to dish: the new MLLE MODISTE recording, the Feb 1 Victor Herbert concert, how his NAUGHTY MARIETTA concert went in Flordia, etc. I'm sorry his girlfriend isn't coming along because I haven't yet met her and I would like to thank her for giving me her ticket to the NY Pops concert for the Mercer birthday concert.

So, God willing, I'll be posting again on Tuesday, unless the hotel in Amherst has a computer service.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Valentine's Day to all my beloved DRs on HHW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Johnny Weir - after watching the men at the World's - I think Mr Weir will be lucky to get on the podium at all.  I watched his "reality" show - and he seems to be a much more pleasant person than I thought he might be.  The pressure to be "outrageous" - most of which he put on himself - quickly wears out his welcome.

When what once got him attention no longer does - he has to get more and more off the wall.  He is the Jayne Mansfield of Men's Figure Skating.....without Jayne's savvy.

Yes.....television can be quite an education.  The first thing I learned on television from when I was little is - when you get your nightclub act, NEVER let your wife be in the show with you!

Good morning!

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood, so I braved the cold and took my walk this morning. There were only two icy places I had to be wary of (one on a bridge naturally), and otherwise, it was smooth walking. Felt good to be outside for 25 minutes or so.

Yesterday the roads in Atlanta were still treacherous but I had to send out a cut to our director, so I hiked a mile with my new computer backpack to the subway and took it downtown and walked to Turner so I could use their computer line. (20 minutes vs. 10 hours!) It's not any faster than driving there but I think I might do this more often on nice days.

I forgot to mention that today is also the first anniversary of John McGlinn's death. It's quite ironic that I'm off to Amherst since I may be the first person to look at the Kern materials since John did in 1984 or 1985 for his Carnege Recital Hall performances of OH BOY! and OH, LADY! LADY!

So, I'm closing down the computer and I'll be with you all on Tuesday.

This should give Fred a chuckle:

At the end of the tax year, the IRS office sent an inspector to audit the books of a local hospital.  While the IRS agent was checking the books he turned to the CFO of the hospital and said, "I notice you buy a lot of bandages. What do you do with the end of the roll when there's too little left to be of any use?"

"Good question," noted the CFO. "We save them up and send them back to  the bandage company and every now and then they send us a free box of bandages."

"Oh," replied the auditor, somewhat disappointed that his unusual question had a practical answer. But on he went, in his obnoxious way.

"What about all these plaster purchases?  What do you do with what's  left over after setting a cast on a patient?"

"Ah, yes," replied the CFO, realizing that the inspector was trying to trap him with an unanswerable question.  "We save it and send it back to the manufacturer, and every now and then they send us a free package of plaster."

"I see," replied the auditor, thinking hard about how he could fluster the know-it-all CFO.  "Well," he went on, "What do you do with all the leftover foreskins from the circumcisions you perform?"

"Here, too, we do not waste," answered the CFO. "What we do is save all  the little foreskins and send them to the IRS Office… and about once a year they send us a complete dick."

And last night I attended a performance of The Enchanted Pig (http://www.newvictory.org/show.m?showID=1032024), a Fairytale Opera at the New Victory Theater (http://www.newvictory.org/index.jsp). What a fun, imaginative and energetic(!) children's opera - which is really meant for all ages.

*And if I could move into the New Victory Theater I would. What a great theater and space! And some of the best ushers in New York City too! They really know how to take care of the children who attend the performances - and their parents too.

I had time to watch two Charlie Brown specials. Since I didn't record it off TV this week, I watched BE MY VALENTINE, CHARLIE BROWN. This was one of the 1970s specials, and they're just not as good as the earlier ones done in the 1960s. I haven't watched this in awhile, so I was pleasant to revisit it, but it was not one of the better specials.

On the same disc is one of the 1960s specials - SO YOU'RE IN LOVE, CHARLIE BROWN. It has the original voice cast, and the writing is funnier and more into character instead of just jokes. Looked OK upcoverted, but some scenes looked better than others.

If any DRs would like to track my "progress" so far in the City Bakery Hot Chocolate Festival, Click Here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/josespiano/sets/72157623290580693/).

...To be continued.  ::)

Ooohhh, the pain....the pain...

On the plus side, a friend who has started a sideline of making homemade fudge gave us some of her testers. I just had dark chocolate and cherries. Pretty yummy, although it could probably do with less sugar.

She wanted to know if there were any good BBQ joints in NYC, and I said I knew just the fellow who would know...

I began entering fixes this morning.  Muse Margaret called and has been under the weather, so she hasn't reread the book yet.  We discussed the ending, and she doesn't want me to touch the epilogue, which is very short and just right.  So, I'm going to end the chapter with the epiphany and then do a subsequent chapter, very short, maybe ten pages tops, that will complete my journey to becoming a record producer.

Jennifer did your toffee on the snow look like this?

Yes that is pretty much what it looks like. I think they boil big pots of maple syrup and then pour it over snow. Then you turn it on your stick.

It is mostly known here for when you go sugaring off. Although not sure if that means anything to most of you guys.

DR Jane there was no mess for the biggie heart cupcakes. Anyhow i put a cookie sheet under the silcone pan.

They actually came out great. ANd i decorated them. My niece loved them.

I must say i screamed very loudly while tobogganing.

I was scared silly. The hill was the biggest i've ever been down. We couldn't let my niece go down alone. So we both sat on the same sled. And i guess my weight made it go very fast.

The second time i put my feet out a bit to stop some of the speed. But if anyone had a video of my first time down. It would be pretty funny.

Did you take a photo of the cupcakes?  Glad they came out.

Is sugaring when the trees are opened for the sap to come out?  I remember taking the boys to a maple sugar farm in Vermont or New Hampshire.  It was a long time ago & I don't recall much about it.  That was when we discovered how delicious top grade maple syrup is, and that I don't like maple sugar candies.

The weather has turned dangerous here.  It doens't look that bad looking out the window, but we had an additional 2-3 inches of snow last night and the winds are about 40 mph and it's really cold out. They have closed the south bound lanes of I-29 due to multiple crashes and travel isn't recommended on other roads.   I was feeling bad about not going to the office today until I went to the grocery store.  I am home and not leaving

Hello, everyone.

I spent the afternoon being pummeled--and I mean PUMMELED! My body has been complaining from the move and then all this sitting on the floor stuff. To give myself a little treat I went to a reflexology place. The therapists were mostly Chinese men. The one who worked on me was quite strong and his massage was VIGOROUS, to say the least. I generally prefer a vigorous, deep-tissue massage to a wussy Swedish one, but this was the most viogorous one I've ever had. Did I mention it was vigorous? I also want to try the place my hairdresser goes to and is so crazy about. Maybe they can be not quite so vigorous, but still not wussy. We shall see.

'twas a busy day here with grocery shopping followed by a great-nephew's first birthday party.  This party was scheduled for last Saturday, but the snow fell and fell and kept falling.  (I know this is true, for I have been picking it up all week).  Saw many relatives whom I don't normally see, and the babies who have grown into little tykes.
I'm still hacking ice away from the house, so that no water is coming in, daily.
Tomorrow I see my podiatrist then go to work at 5.
We are supposed to up to another four inches of snow by the time I leave work tomorrow. . .

I had such a wonderful evening of viewing. I enjoyed everything I watched.

I began with the sappy but appealing (to me) P.S. I LOVE YOU on Blu-ray. Not a stellar Blu-ray transfer, a tiny bit soft for my taste, but the sound was nice, and the parade of handsome men (Gerard Butler, Harry Connick, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Dean Winters) is always appealing.

I had three good cry sessions during this two hour film.

I was watching a motion picture, but I'm too tired to concentrate.

I recorded TAR.  I'm an Olympics junkie

And NBC is doing a good job so far, from what I have seen.....

Richard and I are totally hooked, too, and I'm REALLY enjoying these Olympics now that I'm retired and not having to get up early.  A couple of thoughts:

Was mogul skiing invented by someone who had to ski on a really crappy course?

Did the designers of the Canadian short-track speed skating suits intend for the skaters to look like they'd sat in something?

I think the Canadian short-track speed skating suits look like they are wrapped in saran wrap or they forgot to take off the protective plastic covering

I guess I don't quite understand that one.

To me it looks like they have plastic on. Like the covering over something when you buy it

The weather here is horrible.  We only had an inch or two of snow last night but the winds were so bad today that there were 35-40 cars in many accidents on I-29 just south of town.  They have closed the interstate from Omaha NE to the IA/SD border. We're supposed to get snow tonight and the winds will keep up through the day tomorrow.   I really do have work to do at the office even though we're closed, I'm hoping I can get to the office.  If I can't, I can do the research and most if the writing without my file, but it would be easier to do it there

Oh, I won't.  My office is about 3 miles from here. The streets are all residential and well protected from the wind.  So, I should be able to get there. They haven't even closed school here yet.  It's out in the country that you can't see anything.  My guess is school will be closed.  Some towns around here have missed more than 10 days of school already and they only allow for about 2.  As my mom says, the kids will be in school until the 4th of July!

I really like the national anthem of the Netherlands.  I'm glad NBC is showing more than just the USA medal winners.  I know they won't show them all, but that was nice to see.

DR Laura, our office is closed for President's Day, so I'm in no rush to get there tomorrow. I just need to do some things that are due on Tuesday

I have absolutely nothing romantic planned for today.  :-\

I had no plans of any kind today and I executed them perfectly.  I did watch some TV and deleted some shows from my DVRs, but that's it.

Jennifer did your toffee on the snow look like this?

I guess I have led a sheltered life.

I've never heard of this, either.  It sounds good, though. :)

So...

As I was leaving City Bakery today, Maury Rubin says to me, "Don't leave just yet." Hmm, OK.  He then proceeds to fill a bag with two of their Chocolate-Zucchini Cakes (more like cupcakes) and two Raspberry Linzer Hearts... -Well, my friends would like a cookie... He then places two chocolate chip cookies in the bag before handing it over to me.

:)

I got the book from which the movie Touch Of Evil was made.  The book is called Badge Of Evil.  It's a real holy grail for collectors and in thirty-five years of serious collecting, I'd never actually seen the book.  I had the Brit first edition, but that obviously wasn't the true first.  There were two copies at the fair - one pretty ratty copy for almost double the one I got, and the one I got, which was a really nice copy and maybe the nicest copy there is.  It's a valuable addition to my little collection.

I just started watching tonight's premiere via the DVR a few minutes ago... The first challenge... I could have definitely done that!

DR Ginny - Have you and your DH Richard ever considered staying at The Library Hotel (http://www.libraryhotel.com/) here in NYC?  The rooms are customized according to the Dewey Decimal System.  :)

*And it was just voted one of the Sexiest Hotels in the United States too. ;)

I've only been to NYC once, but I'd certainly consider that hotel (if I could ever afford it).

We also loved TAR.  We were all LOL-ing out at the "mistake" during the painting contest.  Hilarious.  "I am here."  ;)

Thanks DR Jose, AKA  one of the "chosen".

Looks like the gal said yes   Cute photo & sweet story for Valentine’s Day.

I'm wondering how many more proposals will take place in front of The Ice Heart this weekend.

TCB I think it is a Canadian thing. :)

Or in Jose's case, a food thing.

Or, actually, a fifth grade thing...

As part of "Pioneer Days", we made "snow candy".  We didn't use maple syrup.  Instead, our teacher boiled some sugar syrup to the hard-crack stage, then poured it over some snow that he had scooped up in a bucket.

I really loved my fifth grade class and teachers.

Listened to some music, took a hot shower, got two good ideas for the book, just two little sentence additions to smooth out transitions, and that's that.

Sadly(?), they were dressed in clown costumes.  Well, more like Pierrot and Pierrette.
