Well, you've read the notes, the notes wandered, and now it is time for you to post until the wand'ring cows come home.

Good morning, all! The alarm ent off at 6 am and I will shortly be back to work to finish up this chart for its 4 o'clock rehearsal. Tomorrow I can sleep late. Then it's time to begin taxes.

Late yetsreday afternoon I had a great phone call from a friend on the grisly project I left. His advice was: bail and get over it.  I am going to take his advice to forget about it. I gambled, lost, resigned, and then stupidly got myself caught up in it again.  Getting over it will take much longer because of the broken friendshis and bad taste in my mouth.

TOD:
DVD: new Neflix items; I forget what they are
CD: Offenbach's Vert-Vert, Handel aria compilation, Guy Haines, Liz Callaway, FINIAN'S RAINBOW
   VCR: cheap porn

Not many people know this but Charles Dickens was originally named his character Ebenezer Tetchily

Yes, DR JOHN G - I think the Kern songs had less of the irritating trilling that Kathryn and Jane Powell were so fond of - and that (I wish) only dogs could hear.

DR ELMORE - time marches on.....and.....well you know the rest.

Another crisp beautiful morning. Friday is my morning off from walking and exercising to rest my weary muscles, but it was still bracing to feel that cold air in my face when I went to get the newspaper this morning.

I went to bed before the men's finals last night, so when I got up this morning, I had no clue who had won. Getting the newspaper was no help. The skating was on too late on the East Coast to make the morning editions here, so I had to come to the internet to get the results.

I was completely surprised and delighted by the winner, and I can't wait to watch his performance this afternoon when I settle in.

More irritating, of course, were the complaints by the sour-faced sore loser silver medalist who, echoing his fellow countryman from 2002 when she won the silver and thought she deserved the gold, complained about the winner's program in comparison to his own as if landing a quad is ALL that is needed in a sport called figure SKATING, not figure jumping. The judges were looking for a total package of performance with lots of jumps, super spins, and artistry in footwork and transitions going into and out of other moves. The winner had the most exhausting footwork sequence in the entire competition - a level 4 sequence. The silver medalist has a level 2 footwork sequence and stated flatly before the competition that he had no intention of changing it to reflect more difficulty.

Guess what! Had he upped the artistry of his footwork sequences to a level 4, he would have won the gold medal!

Friday morning greetings!  Richard and I got home from Lima yesterday afternoon, I tended to some business for my Mom, then went to talk about young adult literature with my book group friends.  We adjourned early to get home to see the men's free skate and I didn't even turn my computer on.  Stayed up until 1:30am, which is practically an all-nighter for me.

DR MattH - I think that silver medalist is lucky he placed second and will be interested to see if you agree after you've watched the programs.  He was quite bored and kind of rude on the podium.

DR Cillaliz, I had mentioned yesterday that our stations were not showing the speed skating on wednesday. You asked if it had to do with the ice (the olympia ice machine was not working).  No it wasn't because of that. They did mention those delays when they had them.  Plus this was short track (most of the problems i think were at the long track).

I really am looking foward to watching it. When he reentered competitive skating late last year, his entire attitude was that the figure skating world should bow down and pay him hommage which has angered me to no end. He has expected to be rewarded for just showing up. I am SO glad that for a change, the judges didn't fall for his palaver.

I've been reading everyone's comments about the olympics and national pride.  Maybe it's slightly different in canada. But we don't have athletes like lindsey vonn who are promotional machines.  And here it IS a matter of national pride, and not only because the olympics are in canada.  Maybe when a country is used to winning so many medals it is not as exciting.  But here we can always count them on our hand and remember who won each one.  Yesterday it was thrilling to see the top female long track speed skater actually win in her event (1000m). I'm glad I saw it.

It was interesting. But boy did it finish late. I wish they hadn't let it go past midnight.  There were definitely a lot of interesting turn of events.  First off i felt so bad for the japanese charlie chaplin whose skate laces came off. I really liked him.  I absolutely loved the canadian Patrick Chan. I would have loved to see his score if he had not had that one fall. I thought his program was my favorite choreography. I was surprised by his high score. But i guess they judge totally differently now. I also felt bad for the other japanese guy who fell. He didn't end up socring that high in the long but overall he still got 3rd. I really liked how he skated and how he came back after falling right off.  I will say that i'm not that familiar with johnny weir. And i find his petite frame and backwards jumping slightly distracting. But he did so well. It was impressive. I did not at all care for Plushenko. Usually he is so confident and great at his jumps. But lat night he stumbled. And i did not like his perfomance at all.  As for evan, i thought he defnitely was the best and deserved to win. But i will say i find him to be quite big and lanky and doesn't really excite me. But he skated his program flawlessly. He was the only one i saw who landed every jump effortlessly. la la la lala lal al

DR Jennifer, the long and the short of it is that not everyone is interested in sports. It has nothing to do with national pride. These are athletic contests, and some people couldn't be less interested.

And it's no different than any other contest be it Miss Universe or The Oscars or the Nobel Prizes or any other competition that pits contestants from around the world against one another. Some people are just not into it.

It's not about how many medals a country wins, Jennifer, although every country deservedly takes pride in its successes.  For me, it's the media assault on our senses and the nationalistic demand for more, more, more medals.  The athletes cease being individuals during the Olympics and are turned into little boxes that get checked by the media.  If the athlete does not live up to the hype the media imposes upon him, the media reviles him for some reason or other.

It's sickening.

I long for the days when the U.S. was happy if it won 10 medals in the Winter Olympics.  Then, the athletes were the ones that drew me in.  Unexpected victories brought great pleasure.  Now, the media hypes the top athlete in every discipline and "suggests" there is a possibility that, because it's the Olympics, they might pull some inner strength from deep inside them and perform a miracle.

Some Canadian media has been critical of your prime minister's call for more emotional reaction from Canadians over the Olympics.  I know he was attempting to promote a sense of excitement and solidarity, but now some Canadian media have been using that approach as a reason to blame the death of that Georgian luge athlete on the prime minister's "policy".

I am all for national pride...but the media just ruin for it me nowadays.

I did manage to slog through a couple more "Eurotrash" operas, a Pelleas and Melisande set in the North Pole, replete with mannequins (no, I'm not kidding), and the Bayreuth Festival production of Tristan and Isolde, slightly better than Pelleas, but set on a cruise ship with all the women sporting early 60's Jackie Kennedy bouffants and Dior-esque fashions.  Lawsy, lawsy, why can't they "just do it" without all the hoo-hah?

It was interesting. But boy did it finish late. I wish they hadn't let it go past midnight.

If you are in eastern Canada, I guess it was late for you.  It began at 8 p.m. pst (I checked the schedule and that WAS the start time).  Here on the west coast of the U.S., the competition did not get television coverage until about 10:30 p.m.   The broadcast went past midnight although I did not stay up to see it.  I had already learned of the results by 10:30 p.m. and knew my DVR would capture everything.  I did stay up to watch Lysacek's skate (which aired at approximatley 11:25 p.m.).  I was amazed!

I can at least state I am happy as a clam that the entire west coast fan base of halfpipe women's snowboarding got to see every single aspect of the semi-finals and finals...that we got to see all the runs by all the American women (for whom a sweep was mentioned at every turn...and which ended up being a victory for an Australian lady who seemingly came out of nowhere).  An American woman  claimed silver -- the sole U.S. medal -- and the distinction of being the most decorated U.S. female winter sports person ever.  From 8 p.m. to approximately 10:30 p.m., the NBC west coast feed was women's halfpipe coverage.  Our cups ranneth over.

I think NBC is attempting to appeal to, and capture, a younger fan base...but I've never been aware that X-sports, whether live or tape-delayed, were huge ratings grabbers.  Perhaps NBC doesn't have any "live broadcast" rights to the figures coverage.

Were I a snarky person, I'd suggest that when it's time for ladies figure sktaing coverage, the west coast will be treated to the entire curling compeitition until hours after the ladies finals are over.  However, I think curling will be done by then.

Saturday I am scheduled to act (and I use that term loosely) in a student film. How I was cast is a long story, but it was quite a surprise to me when I was asked to be part of this.

My character is "Conservative Republican gentleman."

So far I have no clue where, or when I am to appear at the filming location tomorrow as the director has not answered my e-mail from a couple of days ago. Maybe he was put off by my outrageous requests for my own dressing trailer and imported bottled water.

Well, needless to say, I agree with Ron about the media.  It's certainly one of the reasons I don't watch - I used to watch occasionally back in the 1970s and 1980s.  For me, the media's horrifying, unprofessional, and maniacal behavior has ruined just about everything.

Speaking of houses that look like Grey Gardens, I was amused to read an interview in a Classic Film magazine with Marsha Hunt, where she more or less repeats what she wrote to me privately about visiting Frances Farmer and Leif Erickson's Laurel Canyon bungalow and being appalled by number of cats, not to mention stacks of books everywhere.

Uh oh. I got the stacks and stacks of books, too. But I actually admire that in people's homes -- that is, if the owners actually read them.

Late yetsreday afternoon I had a great phone call from a friend on the grisly project I left. His advice was: bail and get over it.  I am going to take his advice to forget about it. I gambled, lost, resigned, and then stupidly got myself caught up in it again.  Getting over it will take much longer because of the broken friendships and bad taste in my mouth.

I'm very relieved to know you are taking your friend's advice.  VIBES with time some of those broken friendships will mend.

Wasn't it exciting when it seemed the whole world was cheering Elizabeth Manley at the 88 Olympics?  That is the spirit I love, when the enthusiasm for a competitor goes beyond national pride.

I am awake.  Very little discomfort.  Very little.  Dixie and I have had a walk, she's full of piss and vinegar this morning - she jumped up onto Mum's bed, she jumped up onto my bed while I was putting my pants on for the walk AND she jumped major snow heaps to get to places she wanted to go in the yard and driveway.  Maybe tomorrow, I'll take her for one of the long walks at the shopping center or the drainage authority.

:) Good news & glad Dixie is a happy girl.  lol-of course I don't believe for one second you will take you will take her to one of those "special" places tomorrow.

DR FJL, the photo of Jason and me was taken day before yesterday at the Victoria Theatre in Dayton.  Richard and I had just seen TheaterWorks USA's production of Junie B. Jones, in which Jason plays several characters.  We, and several hundred elementary-age kids and their teachers and parents, enjoyed the show very much.  The company is now in Michigan and will be touring until late spring.

Absolutely! That is the ideal which I wish we all could aspire to. I admit going in I have some built in prejudices against particular skaters, but I like to think I'm objective enough to give each one is due if he deserves it. Quite often, the ones doing the most squawking are the ones that truly don't deserve it.

Well, I watched all of the men's final skate that I could. Because of the accident with the skate lace earlier, the show got pushed past midnight, and Plushenko's program got cut off right after he landed his quad toe/triple toe combination. So I still haven't seen his skate or the medal ceremony. I'm sure they'll eventually show up on YouTube. Went to NBC.com, but the skates from last night weren't there. Oh, well.

I adored both Japanese programs, especially the bronze winning program skated to Nino Rota's "La Strada." Had he not had the fall on the quad and one other slight stumble, I would have called it the skate of the night. I just loved his technique and fluidity on the ice.

Johnny Weir was the best I have ever seen him. A clean, moving Olympic skate. Too bad he didn't do this skate four years ago when he was second after the short program. He would have been on the podium for sure.

Evan had a clean skate but it didn't have the fire of his Nationals program even though he had two mistakes at nationals and none last night. He won on his attention to detail and consistency and amazing conditioning to do such difficult steps and jumps and be six feet tall doing them.

Biggest disappointment was Stephan Lambiel who was just flat throughout and whose shoulders dipped at the end of every jump as if he were grasping for those landings. I thought the judges WAY overscored him. I would have had him 6th or 7th instead of 4th and let the Japanese Charlie Chaplin and Johnny Weir and Patrick Chan move up a spot each.

Patrick Chan, the two remaining Japanese skaters, and our Adam Rippon are going to be REAL forces during the next few years.

I also let this afternoon be a TV afternoon so I first watched last night's THE MENTALIST repeat. The last of the episodes featuring the OTHER squad before they get wiped out. I remember catching on to the clue very early when I first saw this, so the key to the puzzle came back easily to my mind while rewatching. I still enjoyed seeing the episode again.

Next I watched PROJECT RUNWAY. The person who went home definitely deserved to go, and I was glad to see it. No one else came anywhere close to those two horrific "designs."

As for the winner, the two designs were unique and intricate, and I was OK with those designs winning. I might have swapped second and third place, however.

Back from the band rehearsal. I heard Douglas Sills. Mario Cantone, and my number for Gary Beach. BK, we talked about the "Evening Primrose" tracks and he says he still loveds them and plays them often. He seemed happy with the number, and I'll be happier with it on Monday, when the band's got its music down and the sound system's in place. It sounded good for a rough rehearsal.

I think I may be in bed by 8 pm. I am really really tired.

Yes, Evan's was quite nice, I thought.   Thank goodness Johnny moved away from that Oksana Baiul-ish concoction with the fur.

As many here know, Johnny "designs" his own costumes (including that saucy corset number -- ugh!).  He made an announcement today that his interest now leans toward "fashion design."

Quelle surprise!

I am currently looking into going back to school.  I've had some long-range plans in the works for a while, but, this week things began to get serious.  I am filling out forms.  I am completing paperwork.  I am accepting phone calls.  I am doing virtual tours.
The reason I'm telling my friends on HHW is that I'm writing essays, and I would like a little bit of assistance.
What I need from DRs, and you, too, BK, should you think about it, IS five adjectives you would use to describe me.  (Of course, some of us have met in the real world;  we have all met here in the ether).
So, if you think you can describe me in five words, preferably adjectives, here's your opportunity.

Thanks. . . .  :)

I took Jan over to the little Japanese variety store that I discovered recently on a walk. This store makes me feel like I'm in Japan. I have never been to Japan, but Jan has, and she agreed. It has no end of little trinkets--all VERY Japanese. I am fascinated.

I am also intrigued by the bank next door, Tomato Bank. It even has a red tomato as its logo. I suspect it caters to the local Japanese community, but, again, I love the name. Is there an asparagus bank? A squash bank? A carrot bank? The possibilities are endless.

Wasn't it exciting when it seemed the whole world was cheering Elizabeth Manley at the 88 Olympics?  That is the spirit I love, when the enthusiasm for a competitor goes beyond national pride.

Who?

I took Jan over to the little Japanese variety store that I discovered recently on a walk. This store makes me feel like I'm in Japan. I have never been to Japan, but Jan has, and she agreed. It has no end of little trinkets--all VERY Japanese. I am fascinated.

Now, DRs, I will tell you all a secret.

Thanks. . . .  :)

Thanks great!  Eventually will you tell us what career you are thinking of?

The first thing that came to mind was well-read, & everything else JMK said :)

Is there an adjectives for someone who cares about animals?

If you haven't watched it yet, there was no question...Plushenko didn't skate a balanced program and front loaded all the hard stuff.

That's your opinion. I totally disagree. I don't think you have to love sports to love the olympics.

I agree Jennifer, but not everyone is interested.  My family has always watched the Olympics...every  minute we can and we are all still doing just that.  I often tear up watching the national anthems of whatever country but I do cheer for the USA and do see it as national pride.  The athletes have to raise money and I don't begrudge them that.  It's still national pride to me

I borrowed this from somebody on Facebook:

"Don’t be distracted by criticism. Remember - the only taste of success some people have is when they take a bite out of you"

;D

That reminds me of my favorite poem by Edgar Guest, which became my favorite because my family is always quick to tell me that the things I want to do will never work

Quote
Somebody said that it couldn’t be done,
But, he with a chuckle replied
That "maybe it couldn’t," but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

Somebody scoffed: "Oh, you’ll never do that;
    At least no one has done it";
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat,
And the first thing we knew he’d begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
    Without any doubting or quiddit,
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
    There are thousands to prophesy failure;
There are thousands to point out to you one by one,
The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle it in with a bit of a grin,
    Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start to sing as you tackle the thing
That "couldn’t be done," and you’ll do it

Evgeni Plushenko looks just like a boyfriend I had years and years ago. He was not a nice person and it makes it very difficult for me to cheer for Plushenko.

He was also the reason I ended up in Phoenix, lol

With his attitude I'm sure a lot of people have trouble cheering for him.  I hope in reality he is nicer than your old boyfriend.

Even with the whining, I'm sure he is

After Jeff left, I put in THE PHANTOM. Yes, it's a cheesy superhero fantasy flick, but it has SUCH gorgeous men in it: Billy Zane, James Remar (really in shape in this), Treat Williams, Jon Tenney. I had forgotten Catherine Zeta Jones was in this.

Anyway, the Blu-ray looked wonderful and had a fantastic DTS-HD MA 7.1 soundtrack. I really loved having those back surround channels being used for a change.

When I finished with THE PHANTOM, I decided to clear another program off the DVR so I watched Wednesday night's LEVERAGE. It was the season finale. Of course, another tiresome cliffhanger for Timothy Hutton's Nate. And the caper was less fun than usual, too, so not a very successful way to end the second season.
