Title: GET THEE TO A NUNNERY
Post by: bk on February 22, 2010, 12:07:04 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes got thee to a nunnery, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently visiting a nunnery.

Now, a new episode about the history of cosmetic surgery. They used to inject paraffin, probably like collagen now, and would mold the hot wax into the new shape for your nose, or other part. It was a bad idea!

There is a chapter in my upcoming book of Hollywood memoirs the deals with lyricist Paul Francis Webster.

Among other tales Webster told me is that:

1. Doris Day tried to have "Secret Love" cut from CALAMITY JANE.
2. She succeeded in having another Webster song cut from her movie, JULIE.  That song was "The Twelfth of Never".

And man JULIE could have used that song.......

We saw it at the drive-in, and my mother made me stop singing the song:

JU_LEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE .... it's the voice of my own true love
And it promises........EGG-STACEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

I find Miss Doris Day infinitely watchable....except in her first few Warner Bros. movies where she has horrible hairstyles and makeup in the style of - in her words, the embalmers in the Warner's Makeup Department.

Hard to choose a favorite but I will start:

PILLOW TALK
THAT TOUCH OF MINK - for her pairing with Cary Grant and Gig Young as second banana
TEACHER'S PET - with Clark Gable and Gig again as second banana

THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH
MOVE OVER, DARLING

Well....JUST about everything until she started her let the wig do the acting-yapping thing as in GLASS BOTTOM BOAT and DO NOT DISTURB.

Favorite songs....again what's NOT to like....but

Do Not Disturb - the song was the best part of the movie
Twinkle Lullaby
Everybody Loves a Lover
Pillow Talk
Secret Love

Yikes - I better leave some for other posters!

The only "secret" story about Doris Day I know was told to me by a friend who works for an airline.

I guess sometime in the 1970's Miss Doris had begun a rather torrid affair with a Texas oilman/millionaire and was convinced the she and the man were going to marry.  Doris traveled to Texas with a rather large amount of luggage and was met at the front door of the man's palatial home by his wife brandishing a gun who had some choice words for America's sweetheart.  Doris returned to California on the next plane.

Which reminds of the story of Patty Andrews and the baseball bat on Doris' front porch!

It always bothered me about THE DORIS DAY SHOW that she moved herself to San Francisco and abandoned her three children and elderly father to fend for themselves on the farm.  Pretty much the same way that Lucy Carmichael dropped her kid off at military school and went to live in sunny California without ever bothering to check in on him again.

Good morning, all! I have a day at Lincoln Center with a dress rehearsal for this Broadway Cares benefit. Before I go, I need to call for refills on several prescriptions, and I may do another 2009 receipt tally. When I get back, I'll continue the tax tallies.

I have little else to report, but I wil certainly be ecstatic when I'm through my taxes on Thursday. As to Miss Day, my favorite film is THE PAJAMA GAME, and I always liked these recordings:
  Secret Love
  Everybody Loves A Lover
  Que Sera Sera
  Sentimental Journey
  Perhaps perhaps perhaps

I'm up and the only one on HHW at the moment.  BK, I love the Go-Between.  Great script by Pinter and terrific ensemble acting by Margaret Leighton, Alan Bates, Julie Christie, Edward Fox, et al.  It was my choice the year it came out for Best Picture.  I can't remember what else was up or what actually one that year, but this was the one I was rooting for.

I like Doris Day, but can't remember any specific songs that stand out for me.  I'm kinda partial to her early movies with Gordon McRae.

Doris Day is one of my all-time favorites.

My favorite films of hers are LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME and PILLOW TALK. I also think she was perfect casting for THE PAJAMA GAME, and her versions of Babe's songs are the definitive ones (Hard to listen to Janis Paige's offkey warbling on the cast recording.

CALAMITY JANE
THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH
MIDNIGHT LACE

Once again I am at the mercy of the studios and mailmen. If PONYO comes today before 1 p.m., I'll work on it.

If it doesn't I'll have the day off.

Since I spent so much time watching DVR movies this weekend, I'd like to make a dent in that Blu-ray stack.

re: last night's ice dancing competition

Wow! What an exciting original dance for the ice dancers.  The announcers here went on and on about the russians costumes. Apparently they had to sit down with Canadian Aboriginal leaders.   The commentators (one was canadian ice dancing olympic medalist victor kraatz) were actually appalled by the outfits.  And victor kraatz was extremely unimpressed with their lack of skill (a lot of 2 foot skating and apparently a much less difficult program). I didn't care for them either. I actually loved the americans. I thought they were wonderful. And i was so happy for the canadians. What a difficult and thrilling program.  Tonight's  free dance program is gonna be really exciting.  Canada has never won gold in ice dance.  I remember when it used to not even be possible to go above your ranking (when victor and his amazing partner shae lynn bourne danced in the 90s).

Thank you.  I found it very interesting & had no idea Brian Orser was a coach.  It was hard reading his disappointment in not winning the Gold.  I would not be surprised if many of the competitors have similar difficulties dealing with the loss.

I don't understand why his performance is used to instruct judges.  Was it that he was judged too high?  I wonder what other well known skate performances are also used.

I have loved Doris Day since I was a small child!

My all time favorite Doris Day film is STORM WARNING. I first saw it when I w as in 2nd or 3rd grade. I thought it was going to be a musical. I was in for quite a surprise.

My other faves or BY THE LIGHT OF THE SILVERY MOON and ON MOONLIGHT BAY.

Of her movie songs, my favorite is "I'm Gonna Ring the Bell Tonight."

TAR was wonderful last night, although I was sad to see that one team leave. But probably just as well, as I would have been very nervous watching the one teammate do some of the rougher competitions.

The cowboys and Jeff and Jordan are my top two favorites. I think the Cowboys should be given their own show. They are adorable.

And here is the new Kritzerland advance announcement - you know the routine - it's 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping payable directly via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia.net.  We're very pleased to be able to release this never before available score.

MANCINI MAGIC

Kritzerland is proud to present a new limited edition CD soundtrack, a world premiere release:

MARRIED TO IT
Music Composed and Conducted by Henry Mancini

Three married couples with nothing in common… and everything to share.  That was the poster tag line and it pretty well sums up this comedy/drama from director Arthur Hiller.  Even though it came out in 1991, Married To It was very much a 1980s film in its attitudes and style.  The movie is about three New York married couples who become friends (their children’s school being the unifying factor for two of the couples – the third couple’s wife is a teacher there).  Each couple goes through trials and tribulations, which are handled dramatically and with humor, all leading up to a school pageant, where all plot strands are neatly tied up, while the students sing Joni Mitchell’s “The Circle Game.”  The movie had a stellar cast, including Cybill Shepherd, Beau Bridges, Stockard Channing, Robert Sean Leonard, Ron Silver, and Mary Stuart Masterson.

For the score, director Hiller turned to the marvelous Henry Mancini.  By this point in his career, Mancini was a legend, having scored an amazing number of great films, films to which his music added immeasurably – Breakfast At Tiffany’s, Touch Of Evil, Charade, Hatari, Arabesque, Two For The Road, Experiment In Terror, Days Of Wine and Roses, the Pink Panther series, The Great Race, Soldier In The Rain, Wait Until Dark, Victor/Victoria, and on and on.

For Married To It, which was one of his last films, Mancini was most likely asked to use Mitchell’s “The Circle Game” as the main and end title, given the importance Hiller places on it in the film.  But the rest of the score is pure Mancini, but a Mancini with a good deal more synth work than was usual for him, although he still employs a full orchestra for several of the cues.   Still, the melodies are glorious and the dramatic cues work beautifully – plus Mancini’s gorgeous orchestration and arrangement of “The Circle Game” is wonderful.  Hiller would end up not using a lot of score – the cues in the film itself are quite short, but hearing them in their entirety is a joy and a delight.

For this CD, we used Mancini’s master mixes and we present every note he wrote for the film.  For the CD’s end title, we used an alternate arrangement of “The Circle Game” since the film simply replays the main title.  We also include several bonus tracks, which include yet another arrangement of “The Circle Game,” an alternate main title with music by Mancini, and two source cues that play under party scenes – both are classic Mancini tunes – “(I Love You And) Don’t You Forget It” and “Mr. Lucky.”

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98 plus shipping.

CD will ship by the first week of April – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).

2 girls and 1 boy - Father Knows Best
2 boys - Leave It to Beaver
2 girls and 1 boy - Make Room for Daddy
2 girls and 1 boy - Family Affair
3 boys - My Three Sons
3 girls - To Rome With Love
4 boys - Please Don't Eat the Daisies
2 Girls 2 Boys - The Partridge Family

I don't understand why his performance is used to instruct judges.  Was it that he was judged too high?  I wonder what other well known skate performances are also used.

DR MattH would probably be able to answer this better.  But I don't think it was because he was judged too high.  This was the 1988 Calgary olympics. And basically Canada's hopes of winning a gold medal (it would have been the first ever at an olympics in canada) rested on brian orser.

There was a huge battle of the brians between US Brian Boitano and Canadian Orser.

I think that Brian Orser did skate amazingly and he thought he skated well enough to win. But he didn't (the judging was different then). Remember each country would rate each skater and it used to be out of 6.0. I remember it was very close.

Now there is a whole new system for ranking. I'd be curious if under this new system if brian orser would have won. Since they judge a lot on how many jumps you do and of what variety with each one having a predetermined value).

Don Francks is in MARRIED TO IT......Cybill Shepherd, Stockard Channing, and Robert Sean Leonard are all SO good - but everybody shines.....and Mancini does a sweet score.

And of course it's ALWAYS nice to hear "The Circle Game" - although Buffy Sainte-Marie's version in STRAWBERRY STATEMENT will always be my favorite.  ;D

DR Cillaliz re: that short track speed skating event of saturday night (when your power was out). Since you are cheering for a different country maybe you would enjoy the race.

Although i was reading an article online that said that apolo anton ohno is the most despised man in south korea. Ouch!  I really like him and find that the koreans race extremely aggressively.  One of them actually tried to pull the canadian favorite back at the finish line!

I just looked at the startlist for the ice dancing tonight. The americans skate first, then the canadians (3rd to last), with the russian going last. Not too happy about this. Although i think it's worse for the US than for canada.  But great for the russians.

Orser won the free skate at Sarajevo in 1984, but lost the gold to Scott Hamilton who won the short program.  Hamilton must have outscored Orser in figures as well, but I believe a French skater actually won the figures portion.

Orser was tied with Boitano after the free skate in 1988.  The tie-breaker was the artistic marks, and Boitano had the edge there...so the gold went to Boitano.

Orser was an ideal skater.  That is why a video of him skating might be among several used to instruct judges.

I can think of one, though the girl wasn't a teen-ager:  NANNY AND THE PROFESSOR.  And it was 2 boys, 1 girl on EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND, though both parents were living.

I began with "The Stolen Costume," the one episode from season one that looks simply awful, like they found it on the floor of a vault somewhere and stomped on it a few hours before running it through a telecine machine to make a copy for the DVD set. But it's such a fun episode.

I'm back from the rehearsal, which - as is often the case with benefits - was tentative at times, but i think it will go really well tonight. My number was rehearsed before noon, so I stayed till Joshie's orchestration for Aaron Lazar, who has a wonderful voice, was played down.

I got back to find a weird invoice from my health insurance company that looked like no other invoice I'd ever received from them and it's $300 less than my last quarterly premium, which cannot be correct. I'm completely puzzled. I've called and made the inquiry. I have to call back on Friday for answers.

and on the fallout front, I got a sickeningly sweet letter that had a cordial cover to a veiled threat.

Now that Comcast has all of their cables and optics installed in my area, I can't say I can complain about much.  The bill is weird and you have to make sure you aren't being charged for something you didn't get.....and they don't upgrade your boxes or modems until there is a breakdown....OR you asked them to....even if there is an upgrade.....but Comcast is fine with me....their HD TV is great....although there are a few channels I would like to get.

Thanks DR DtM - some of those shows I didn't watch.

Another 2 boys, 1 girl, single parent show neither one of us probably watched: DIFFERENT STROKES.

I thought that was a father and three drug addicts?

Back from a nice lunch.  I got two overseas boxes back because darling Cason forgot to sign and date the customs forms - hope that's all that's coming back.  Those will go back out tonight.

Thanks George.  In my more relaxed state he got through my stretches faster & more easily than my last few visits.  I don't think he went farther.:(   Last visit I had one stretch that would not happen & he decided to give up.  I insisted he try again & we succeeded.  He laughed & said I'm the rare person who insists on more.  Most people want him to stop.  I naturally was very pleased with myself.

Great news for Kindle owners - the Kritzer books and the Hofstetter books will all be available on Kindle in six weeks, and so will the new book when that comes out.  VERY happy.

Great news for me!

Wow....DR DtM - I can't think of any old TV family with two boys and one girl in the mix.....

2 girls and 1 boy - Father Knows Best
2 boys - Leave It to Beaver
2 girls and 1 boy - Make Room for Daddy
2 girls and 1 boy - Family Affair
3 boys - My Three Sons
3 girls - To Rome With Love
4 boys - Please Don't Eat the Daisies
2 Girls 2 Boys - The Partridge Family

I know I am leaving out LOTS of shows.....but I can't think of any shows with the 2 boys, 1 girl equation.

I can think of one, though the girl wasn't a teen-ager:  NANNY AND THE PROFESSOR.  And it was 2 boys, 1 girl on EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND, though both parents were living.

And THE PARTIDGE FAMILY was 2 girls, 3 boys, but then everyone always forgot about what's-his-name...

David Cassidy?  ;)

Actually My Three Sons added a daughter to the lineup late in the show. Can't think of any though with two boys and one girl.

I had a real treat today.  Keith dropped me off in town for a walk in the park before meeting a friend for lunch.  I haven't eaten out since before my accident.  We went to a Japanese restaurant & I forgot about chopsticks.  Watching me struggle the waiter showed up with a fork.  I'm pleased to say I used the chopsticks with my right hand.  I'm sure I couldn't have done it left handed.  I was able to get the food up to my mouth without spilling it.  I'm progressing. :)

I had a glass of wine which was very interesting, in a good way, during PT after lunch.

A glass of wine is always a good thing. So is a lunch with a friend or friends. Both help the healing process.

So true John G.   I have a very low tolerance for alcohol & drank the first half of the glass slowly as not to embarrass myself.  As we got closer to leaving I sped up my drinking, finishing the last of the wine before walking out the door, postponing the giggly stage for our exit. :)

I had forgotten how long THE DAVINCI CODE is: almost three hours. So I didn't have as much time to watch other things as I would have liked.

But I did watch it. The Blu-ray looks fine usually, but it's weird how shots go from soft to sharp and back again all the time. Distracting when you have this perfect picture and all of a sudden, it's not so perfect. Great color, though, and excellent Dolby TrueHD sound.

In anticipation of the ladies figure skating coming up, I tok out my 2002 Salt Lake City recording and watched Sarah Hughes masterful gold medal long program. I watched it three times because it was so far superior to ANY of the skating at the 2006 Olympics, in my mind one of the most disappointing final flights of skaters in the last 30 years.

In the meantime...

I had a great time at "The Daily Show".  Ricky Gervais was the guest, and let's just say that the interview took quite an unexpected turn and tone. ;)  It was also their first show back after being off for a week, so the opening ten minutes of show were used to catch up things. Very funny.

*This was my first time attending a taping of "The Daily Show", and even though I had a good time during the show itself, the whole waiting-to-get-into-the-studio process seems like it could be streamlined - or least made more entertaining.  The doors open at 5:15.  They encourage people to start lining up between 3:30 and 4:30, although, some people clearly started lining up earlier.  Well... At 4:30 is when they started distributing the paper tickets and checking people's name off the various lists.  -So, if you were toward the back of the line, you weren't ticketed and checked until sometime around 4:45 - the line is supposed to cut off at 4:30.  Then the whole process of getting into the studio starts - metal detectors and bag inspections - they actually do a more thorough than the TSA.  Then once we were seated, we waited.  And waited.  There was no definite start given for when the taping would begin, but I guess it began sometime around 6:30 since we were back out on the street at 7:05.  Again, I had a good time, and I'm just thankful that the weather earlier today was not that cold, and that nothing was falling from the sky.

Have any of you had both COMCAST and DIRECTV at various times?  I have a choice of providers at the new house.  It's already evidently pre-wired for COMCAST, but doing DIRECTV wouldn't be hard.  We have DIRECTV currently.  I'd love to hear reviews of COMCAST especially, but if you've had both, which you prefer and why.  Thanks.

Our COMCAST customer service SUCKS. That's the only time I've ever screamed at someone over the phone. (After they came out for the 6th time to hook up the cable and did it wrong or didn't do it at all...after I'd taken off several days to be there.)

Quote
From the New York Times' "Inside The Rings" series...

Glint of Gold Never Left Orser’s Eyes

Then it doesn't have anything to do with is losing to Boitano, or that someone felt it was judged incorrectly.  That I can understand.

I don't remember the 84 men's competition all the well, except maybe I was surprised Hamilton won.

Why surprised?  Because you thought Orser had a better skate?

Or didn't you know that Hamilton had four national titles and three world titles under his belt going in to the 84 Olympics?
