Well, you've read the notes, the notes were not on Kindle, and now it is time for you to post until the cows on Kindle come home.
-
And the word of the day is: LOGOMACHY!

If for some reason you skipped the notes, the title of the new book is revealed therein.
-
BK, I like the book title very much. :)

And a Very Happy Birthday to DR Druxy!! ;D
-
Well...last night was quite eventful...and not in the good way. :-\ My niece called me in a total panic saying, "There's flooding in our house!!" :o She said that water was coming down from the light fixtures in the ceiling into the kitchen (my sister has a two-story house) and some water was going out into the garage!! I rushed over, but fortunately, Larry (my sister's boyfriend) had gotten there before I did and was able to turn off the main water valve. It turns out that some pipe burst inside upstairs! My niece said that she would hear noise whenever she ran the water in her bathroom upstairs. My sister has been trying to get a hold of the builder for several weeks. She even sent a certified letter, but somehow it wasn't sent properly and it came back. The builder used to live next door (and the two houses are almost identical) and is supposed to have a contract to fix anything in my sister's house for a year, which is not up yet. Anyway, she had me go to Ross to get some inexpensive towels, and I also got some actual Sham-Wow things from our parents. We got most of the water from the downstairs floor (which fortunately is concrete...no carpet!) pretty much dry, but who knows what the walls and the ceiling are going to be like. She was able to call a plumber who will come first thing in the morning. The only other consolation (along with the concrete floor) is that she just got her income tax refund, so she'll be able to use that money to fix things up. However, I'm sure she wanted that for other things, but shit happens. :P
-
Of course, it's nothing like what Danise has been through, but it's certainly traumatic. And the other not-so-good news is that the guy has been trying to sell his house next door since last year and it's now in foreclosure. Not a good thing for my sister.
-
Ooohh...vibes to your sister, George. Being on my 3rd old house, I feel her pain. After all the September rains, part of our house is sinking.
-
I hope the builder makes good on his 1 year coverage!

I've never seen a Kindle, but there's something nice about holding a book and I sometimes chose books based on the cover design. If I see it in a store, and it grabs my eye, I'll read the back, and then flip through and decide if I want to buy. I love browsing in bookstores. The downside is, I buy a lot of books I never get around to reading.
Since I do end up reading a lot from the computer, maybe I would like the Kindle, but I like to carry a book around with me and I would probably worry about the Kindle disappearing or leaving it somewhere...much less of a financial loss with a book.
Plus, what do you do at book signings if someone buys the book on Kindle? :)
-
I don't have a Kindle or an electronic book reader. I don't plan on getting one. If they do replace books I don't think they will do it in my lifetime. I know DAW has a Kindle and loves it but they are just not for me. As Amy said, I don't want to drop or lose it. It costs almost $300!!! And then there is the issue of Digital Rights Management. They are slowly changing things but right now for the most part, unless you loan your Kindle to a friend you can't loan them the book.
I'll stick with hard copies.
-
That's awful about the burst pipe, George. How in the world could that happen on a new house? Didn't they use copper?

Happy Happy Birthday, DR Druxy!
-
Good morning, all! Today is another day with the McGlinnventory. I have discovered to my dismay that I have mislaid or accidentally tossed out my envelope of 2009 receipts for taxis, buses and subways. Since it's around $1800 worth of receipts, I am very unhappy. I went to my 2008 tax files and found last year's amount - $1831 - and I guess I will use it again this year, although I'm sure it's higher for 2009, given that taxis had added a $0.50 charge for every ride; this was sneaked onto the fare to help defray the crooked MTA's claims of being unable to pay for public transportation without raising the fees so we're now being taxed and charged .50 per taxi ride, and the MTA asses still can't cover their costs! Someone needs a takeover.
So, after the McGlinnventory, I have to stop by Toyland for a second to drop off some things. Following that, I will return here to finish up my tax tallies.
As to kindles, my friend Cathie has one, but I'm sticking to books. Devices break, run out of power, etc., but I can tote a book around with only the fear of dropping it onto a subway tracks (lost two books that way) or breaking a spine.
-
Tuesday morning greetings! Up early again after staying up too late last night watching skating (loved the results!). I have to take my mother to an orthopedist today to see about her back.
-
Happiest of birthdays to DR Druxy!
-
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday, DR Druxy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
TOD - as much as I like electronic communications, I just can't get excited about using technology for reading. I'm not in any hurry to have a Kindle and haven't even taken the time to figure out how to download books from the library. That said, I am thrilled for BK that his books will be available to readers who do use that format!

And the word of the day is: LOGOMACHY!

HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR DRUXY

Happy Birthday, DR DRUXY!!!
-
I like the book title very much! It tells you exactly what you are going to get - but is intriguing as well.......
-
Sorry to hear of your sister's troubles, DR GEORGE....most distressing.
-
I don't own a Kindle. It is the wave of the future, I am sure, but I am hoping it is NOT the wave of MY future. Time will tell, as Joan Crawford used to say when she didn't want to answer a question.
-
Congrats to Kimmel on Kindle, however, I am sure a whole new market will open up.
-
I must spend ALL DAY today learning THRILLER because tonight is our group rehearsal followed by an individual rehearsal at the venue.....the Dixie Chopper Auditorium, which is an airplane hanger east of town.
-
If I think of it, I will take my camera to get some more pictures of said participants!
-
! ! ! ! ! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DR DRUXY ! ! ! ! !

I am also reluctant to try this. I love holding books in my hand. But I would be interested to try it for one book just to see. Who knows.

Dr RonP wrote:
Orser was tied with Boitano after the free skate in 1988. The tie-breaker was the artistic marks, and Boitano had the edge there...so the gold went to Boitano.
Orser was an ideal skater. That is why a video of him skating might be among several used to instruct judges.
DR Jane wrote:
Then it doesn't have anything to do with is losing to Boitano, or that someone felt it was judged incorrectly. That I can understand.
That's not what I took from what DR RonP wrote. Since there is no tie-breaker where artistic marks are the tie-breaker they could very easily be saying that orser would have won.

TOD:
I love my Kindle! I also love books. But I don't have to own a hardcopy of every single book that I want to read--my bookshelves are already packed and overflowing. The Kindle can hold thousands of books, plus anything I purchase through the Kindle bookstore is stored in my Amazon Digital Locker (or whatever it's called) and I can download them whenever I need to. If I come across a book elsewhere that's in pdf form, I can e-mail it to Amazon and they will convert it to the Kindle format.
The Kindle is lightweight, so reading something like that last Stephen King book was not also a weightlifting experience. And the screen is completely readable in all kinds of light. I regularly read from my Kindle on the beach during the summer. (I do wish that it had a back light for bedtime reading, but it seems they are concerned with battery life. I get around this by using a clip-on light.) The unit is also durable--I've dropped it a number of times with no ill effect.
I also still like shopping in bookstores and browsing and buying--nothing will ever replace that experience. But I also have immediate access to hundreds of thousands of titles through the Kindle bookstore through the device itself, a healthy portion of which are free. Back in November, I had a hankerin' to read Dickens' GRRREAT EXPECTATIONS; I had it on my Kindle in minutes.
An added feature is internet access. While the browser is not high-resolution, it's serviceable enough to use to look up information if you need it right away. And there is no monthly fee for this access.
There is also a built-in dictionary that can be accessed while reading. If you come up against a word and you need to look it up, you just highlight it, hit a few buttons and you have a definition.
Up till the recent brouhaha Amazon had with Macmillan, pricing was also an advantage--all new books had the top price of just $9.99. I'm not sure what the future holds in that area, though. Also, not every book is available, though from what I understand, a ton of back-catalog books are going to sold on the Kindle bookstore in the coming year. I'm still waiting for THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK.

Something that I am not happy to read about:
Textbooks That Professors Can Rewrite Digitally (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/22/business/media/22textbook.html)
I think it would be wonderful if textbooks were available in digital format to cut students' costs. But I don't like the idea of these books being editable by the instructors.

I'm up, and I've announced.

Thanks for all the happy birthday wishes, folks.
In case you're interested, it's 69.
I'm talking about my birthday.
What did you think I was talking about?
;D
-
Good to hear from all camps on the Kindle issue. It's not for me - I'm a book person, but that's probably my collector mentality. But I "get" the Kindle. And one of the reasons I wanted the stuff on Kindle was the royalty rate is really good for the author.

TOD:
My wife wants a Kindle, but we are holding off buying one because we want to be sure that that is the electronic device that winds up dominating the market. Will there be some books out there that can be read on a competing reader, but not Kindle?
As an author, I've not been impressed with the wonders of Kindle. My ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD book is available on Kindle, but those sales account for, perhaps 1-2% of the total. Not too impressive.
On the plus side, physical books are expensive and take up space. Realistically, how many books do we have that we ever read a second time?
Personally, I don't like reading anything of length electronically. I much prefer holding the book or papers in my hands.
-
Good morning!
It was so warm this morning that I didn't even need a jacket for my walk. It is supposed to return to colder weather as the week progresses, I guess the last gasp of winter before spring arrives. It's gray today, too, and we're supposed to have more rain tomorrow.
-
TOD:
I have no interest in Kindle (or any electronic reader) at present, but that doesn't mean at some future date I won't find it something to have. Right now, I'm satisfied with book-books. I am not opposed to the concept of an electronic book.
-
Happy Birthday, DR Druxy!!!

So far, there have been no UPS deliveries, so it looks like my day off is still in force. Today will likely be THE PRINCESS BRIDE on Blu-ray. Haven't watched the movie in years and look forward to seeing it in a decent transfer. I think the DVD I have was not an anamorphic transfer (that's how old it is).
-
In response to DR Jose's comment last night about cable customer service,
I have nothing but praise for the customer service for Time-Warner here in Charlotte. I have never called with a problem that it didn't get immediate attention. If it was something that could be fixed from downtown (a channel being paid for but not coming through), it was fixed on the spot.
The one or two times when there seemed to be a cable outage, they were there the same day called (if I called in the morning) or the next day if it was an afternoon call.
-
Happy birthday to DR Druxy, yet another
crazy wonderful UW alum!
-
After transferring my DVR files of skating from 2006 and 2010 over to DVD-Rs, I am left with a cache that's only 24% full, a HUGE improvement from the 92% full it was last Friday morning. And once I get those Tony Awards transferred over, that will free up another large chunk of space.
-
Oh, my, I'll have to watch LOST "live" once again this week since AMERICAN IDOL expands to two hours for the first night of singing performances (the top twelve women). I'll also be recording the Olympics as the ladies short programs are tonight's featured attraction.
-
Well, DR Jane's Keith continues to work his magic and now is pretty sure he's found my maternal great-grandparents. I'm not stopping until we get to Adam and Eve, folks. ;)

There is also a new episode of WHITE COLLER on tonight and the last of the SOUTHLAND repeats from its NBC run last year airs tonight. Next week begins the new episodes of SOUTHLAND.

I think a lot of us who are against kindle have never tried it. The idea just sounds like something we wouldn't like. To me it seems like it would lose a lot of the excitement of having a real book in your hands.
But it would be interesting if everyone could actually try it and then comment.
-
DR Sandra has a Kindle.
-
At this time I don't have a need for a Kindle, but I can see where it might come in very handy, particularly for those who are on the road alot and don't want to carry around a bunch of books.
In my case, most of the books I read are those that I intend to keep, either for research purposes (books on films, bios, etc) or for sentimental reasons (the Benjamin Kritzer books, books by people who I know, etc.), so a Kindle would not be a good investment for me....maybe when I retire and have time to read a wider selection of books something like that might come in handy.
I think it is nice to have this option for those it would suit.

I was griping about the rain when I drove in this morning but now I'm seeing that it's doing a good job of washing away a great deal of the snow that's been lingering about.

I'm all ready to go - I'll leave at nine, do my banking, and then toddle on over to the casting session - one must get there early if one wants a parking space.

I received my CD of ELMER GANTRY yesterday...listened to it on the way to work...just beautiful! I do love Andre Previn and I am so happy that you have released more of his lovely music, BK!

Kindle? No! Never! I'm a man who has over 5-6, 000 books. There is a tactile experience that goes along with reading a book...I like turning pages, feeling bindings, the scent of them...no kindle for me!

Ditto. I've always loved the pure peformance. The only nationalistic issues I've had are when blocs of judges propped up skaters from a specific region at the expense of better performances. Over the past several decades, this has happened many, many, MANY times.
Vote trading has also been an issue that has cost many wonderful skaters titles. In 1980, reigning world champion ladies figure skater Linda Fratianne skated beautifully at the Olympics, only to be ousted for Gold by East German Annette Poetsch, whose free skate was energetic (to the overture of "Funny Girl") but inferior to Fratianne's.

It's different here. Everybody is all about the Canadian performers. I can appreciate the other skaters. But I will always be cheering for the Canadian.

There's a rumor that Amazon is going to give free Kindles to Amazon Prime subscribers. I don't know if that means it would be a gift for new subscribers only or to anyone who already subscribes.

So for the ice dancing last night, none of you guys would cheer for the US pair to win if you liked another team's performance better?
Maybe it's because we don't have that many gold medalists here. But it is a huge deal for us to be going for a gold medal.

I also read the book because of the title. I'm very influenced by titles to read or ignore a book. When DR td mentioned HOTEL ON THE CORNER OF BITTER AND SWEET, I knew I had to read the book simply because of the title.

My mother's father was missing, not because he split but because he didn't know where his ex-wife moved after remarrying. My mother never found her father or knew what happened to him. An uncle gave her two letters from her father years after they were written. Had she had them sooner she could have found him. My parents hired a private eye to search for him. I think he took their money & did nothing. A few years back we learned where he is buried, in a popper's grave, in Wales. I cried when I found out. He died young & my mother's search was too late. It is very sad we don't even have a photo of him.

DR Jane, be sure to read THE LOST CITY OF Z.
After my injury the friend I had lunch with sent me a small desk calendar, the kind you tear the page off each day. Every day I read about a different book. The other day THE LOST CITY was the book of the day. I thought it was the same book you suggested, now I realize it isn't. Did you also read The Lost City? I have Z on my list of books to read. At the moment I have a bag full books to work through.

Ron I really don’t remember why I was surprised Hamilton won. Maybe I did prefer Orsers skate, it is just a vague memory. I knew who Hamilton was. In fact when we lived in Massachusetts his cousin was a neighbor. She was also very athletic & taught the best, as in most fun, aerobics class I ever took. By the ’84 Olympics we had left Massachusetts & lived in Pennsylvania. The boys were at an age that kept me very busy with less time to focus on the Olympics.
-
Thanks for all these terrific titles. One nice thing about using a Kindle is that you can download a sample of a title before you buy the entire book.

Speaking of the Olympics, Shannon Bahrke winner of the Olympic bronze in the moguls competition is a supporter of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. When you buy a special Best Friends blend from her Silver Bean Coffee company, the animals get a portion of the proceeds. The coffee is 100 percent organic and Free Trade.

I also read the book because of the title. I'm very influenced by titles to read or ignore a book. When DR td mentioned HOTEL ON THE CORNER OF BITTER AND SWEET, I knew I had to read the book simply because of the title.
DR Jane, who is the author of "The Summer Kitchen" - there are 2 on Amazon.

DR Matthew, after checking it out, is it the kind of book you want to read? I'm not sure it is for everyone, not that every book is. When I read the Kite Runner I practically insisted everyone read it.
-
I check everything out first. That's what's nice about the sample :)

I get around this by using a clip-on light.) The unit is also durable--I've dropped it a number of times with no ill effect....
A woman that I work with had a Kindle and hers dropped from her kitchen table. A corner hit the ground just right and cracked the screen...totally ruined. And I guess you can't even get any kind of insurance like you can with cell phones. She was out the $300. :P
-
Speaking of checking things out - I highly recommend
"The Glass Castle - A Memoir" by Jeannette Walls

Birthday Snow!
There's something I'm not ever likely to see.
Me either! (My birthday is in July)
Cilla, you could vacation in Australia for your birthday! ;)

HOUSE REPAIR VIBES TO DS OF DR GEORGE!

Yeah, I dropped mine, the ink exploded rendering it useless. Luckily, the DP knows me well and purchased an insurance plan and I was able to replace it free. But just once.... :)
-
Evidently, my co-worker didn't know that you COULD get insurance.
-
Thanks for all these terrific titles. One nice thing about using a Kindle is that you can download a sample of a title before you buy the entire book.
You simply must get Robert Goddard's IN PALE BATTALIONS. Trust me on this one.

DR DRUXY -- all of that AND a drunk Doug McClure.
Priceless....and yes the reactions of Mr G. and Mr. M. were great!

Wonderful memoir. A fun memoir is "Whatever You Do, Don't Run: True Tales of Botswana Safari Guide" by Peter Allison.
Did you ever read THE BRIDGE by Doug Marlette.?

Probably. I misplaced the page I had on it. I think the description fits.

There's a rumor that Amazon is going to give free Kindles to Amazon Prime subscribers. I don't know if that means it would be a gift for new subscribers only or to anyone who already subscribes.
And, where did you hear this rumor?

I, for one, am a Prime subscriber who would LOVE to have a Kindle. And, yes, I'd use it.

On the other hand, if it had been a Steuben crystal vase, it would have been the same result and she would have been out $500, or thereabouts. She should be happy it was her Kindle and not a Steuben crystal vase.

If I don't go do my exercises (I've never been this late) it will be time to do them again without much of a break. My upper arm felt locked after walking so I've been procrastinating. Usually I do them before I walk, however today I wanted to beat the rain, and I did.

So for the ice dancing last night, none of you guys would cheer for the US pair to win if you liked another team's performance better?
Maybe it's because we don't have that many gold medalists here. But it is a huge deal for us to be going for a gold medal.
I can tell you now that I will ALWAYS pull for the best set of performances to win no matter the country. Believe you me, I can go all the way back to John Curry and Robin Cousins in 1976 and 1980, both British national champions, who I was pulling for. No one skated as beautifully as they did and yet had all the athletic moves as well. Of course, you want your own countrymen to do well, but when the clearly better skaters come from elsewhere, I'll not let national pride blind me to who's good and who isn't.
-
Ron I really dont remember why I was surprised Hamilton won. Maybe I did prefer Orsers skate, it is just a vague memory. I knew who Hamilton was. In fact when we lived in Massachusetts his cousin was a neighbor. She was also very athletic & taught the best, as in most fun, aerobics class I ever took. By the 84 Olympics we had left Massachusetts & lived in Pennsylvania. The boys were at an age that kept me very busy with less time to focus on the Olympics.
I'm sure part of it was that you only got to see the final long program skate (They didn't often broadcast the figures and usually gave oly highlights of the short programs. Scott always did well in the compulseries). Scott had a MISERABLE long program at the 1984 Olympics. He only won because of his solid scores in the two previous rounds that very few if any got to see. Judging solely on the basis of what was broadcast, Orser was the clear winner. But black then, the figures were worth 40%, the short program 20%, and the long progam 40%. So, you could have a lousy free skate and if you did well before it, you could still win. Hard to do that now.
-
I finished (finally) the episode of SPARTACUS that I had been watching for two days in little bits. Violent again (not as bad as last week's show) but definitely moving the story along. I knew they had to do something to get Spartacus back in the people's favor.
-
As I ate lunch, I watched last night's DAMAGES. Another wonderful episode and a new love interest for Ellen which was nice to see. More surprises, too, including a surprise murder.
-
No UPS deliveries, so I did have another day off.
I began with THE PRINCESS BRIDE on Blu-ray. Looked nice (but not reference quality). Sound was DTS-HD MA and OK but nothing exceptional. Movie was very fun as it has always been.
Mandy Patinkin looked the best in this that he has ever looked. Wonder if he ever played the lead in THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE? With his voice and that build, he certainly could have.
-
Then I watched some SUPERMAN episodes. I began with "Czar of the Underworld" which takes place on a movie set in Hollywood.
-
Then came "Ghost Wolf" about a "werewolf" in the timber regions of Oregon. I always liked this episode, too. Was spooky to me as a kid.
-
Then I watched part II of "The Unknown People" adapted from the feature film. Jeff Corey looked so young in this.
-
I looked at the featurette on the making of the first season, too. One of the speakers was the author of SUPERMAN FROM SERIAL TO CEREAL. Jack Larson was there, too, of course.
-
I skimmed through today's ONE LIFE TO LIVE. The boys weren't on so I wasn't interested.
-
Luke and Dr. Pill were on AS THE WORLD TURNS, and it was pretty good, the first time he's been halfway civil to Luke (kind of). Still a lotof snark there though.
-
When I finished with those, THE STING was playing on one of the HBO-HD channels, and I watched about 20 minutes of it. I have it on HD-DVD, and I might just pull that out and watch it tonight before LOST comes on.
Or, I might watch L.A. CONFIDENTIAL on Blu-ray. Would like to see it again, too.
-
There's a great interview with U.S. champion Rachael Flatt at this link. There is one 17-year old with a great head on her shoulders.
http://www.tvguide.com/News/Figure-Skater-Rachael-1015316.aspx
-
I'm going to close up shop in the office and head downstairs to see what things I can find to watch until I check in with LOST "live."
WBBL.
-
Something has been nagging at me as a bit of unfinished business here at HainesHisWay.com.
Couldn't figure it out....why I don't know.
But now I know!

Thank you. I knew you could explain it. It is nice to have my memory confirmed. I remember not watching the short programs, not that they weren't shown being the reason for not watching.
-

He would have made a great Mabel. I can just hear him singing "Poor Wandering One."

happy, happy, DR Druxy. Glad the snow stayed in Austin and didn't get this far south. We only had slush.
TOD: I don't have a Kindle and I do have 20 bookcases or more in house with books overflowing onto the floor in stacks. And I've actually read about half of them and use many more as reference.
That said, I wouldn't mind having one (though I'd probably prefer the Nook since I worked at Barnes & Noble and am a little more familiar with it). I love reading 19th century novels, particularly Anthony Trollope at this point. I can't find two of his for less than $25 a copy, and for badly worn paperbacks at that. Yet both are available electronically for 99 cents apiece. So, I may have to do that if I finish the rest of his books before I find decent, affordable copies.
I can also see using an e-reader for plane trips and for heavier-than-necessary works, like the new Stephen King. But I also have a friend who says she doesn't absorb as much from a book when she reads it on her Kindle as she does when she has a copy in her hand.
So, it's a toss-up, but probably an inevitability, especially for those of us searching for out-of-print books.
-
Back for but a moment as I must go eat. We only had four no-shows today, so that was better than usual. Some good people, and I do believe we've found our young leading lady - the actress just came in and sang a perfect song and did a perfect reading. Funnily, she's the only one with Broadway credits. She's coming to do our private reading on Friday night, and I suspect she'll be told then that the role is hers.

It's almost like the difference between buying a CD versus downloading the tracks. I very muchly prefer to have the actual CD, mainly because of the artwork and liner notes. When you download something from iTunes or Amazon (or anywhere else, I suppose), you RARELY get an electronic booklet. However, I have replaced a few of my stolen CDs with iTunes or Amazon downloads when physical CDs are much, much, MUCH (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000000PET/ref=ord_cart_shr?_encoding=UTF8&v=glance) (that's three muches) too expensive. I can make a simple booklet with at least the cover art and track list so that I have something to hold.

I wonder if most Americans feel this way. Anyways most Olympic sports aren't judged, so it's obvious who comes in first place.
I could see wanting another country's skater to win if they are clearly better. But often times it's subjective. Some people preferred the american ice dancers, some preferred the canadians. Even in men's figure skating some people thought plenshenko was better.
I actually suspect that most Americans would root for the American. But i know at least in canada we don't win that many medals. So maybe it makes us root for our countrymen more.
-
Tonight on tv we have women's figure skating, LOST, and AMERICAN IDOL.
-
I bought my Kindle last Fall and I absolutely love it. I took it with me to Europe and it was great. I managed to take 12 books (including the complete Sherlock Holmes and the complete works of Jules Verne) in the side pocket of my carry-on, and it weighed a little less than one pound.
In addition, if I hear about a new book I want to read, or if I find out that a favorite author has a book I hadn't heard of before; I can have the book delivered to my Kindle in less than 60 seconds. And in makes reading in bed much more comfortable; at least for me personally.
-
DR Cillaliz, I"m not sure if you and your mother have specific favorite pros on DANCING WITH THE STARS.
But it looks like the show has decided not to have some favorites: Lacey, Karina and jonathan won't be back (very unhappy about the first two). It looks like Cheryl, Chelsie, Edyta, Derek, Mark, Tony, Maks, Tony and some guy named damian are back too. I guess they are gonna be very heavy on female celebs this year. I don't like that idea.

I always root for Japan and Iceland. Same goes for the Miss Universe pagent. If they aren't in it, I don't watch.
;)

Hey, ROOM 222 season 2 is now available for those who care.
-
I think a lot of us who are against kindle have never tried it. The idea just sounds like something we wouldn't like. To me it seems like it would lose a lot of the excitement of having a real book in your hands.
But it would be interesting if everyone could actually try it and then comment.
I also agree with Dan the Man about space. I have three bookcases in my apartment, and they are all full I am running out of space to stack books.
I still love books. And I doubt I will ever use my Kindle for reading the Bible.
-
I go back and forth on the Kindle. I have looked at other "readers" in stores and while I think they are cool. But, after spending a good portion of the day looking at computers for work and enjoyment, I like reading off of paper. I also can see getting to the best part of a book and having the batteries die. THat would be my luck
You don't have batteries. You charge it like a cell phone. I only need to charge my Kindle maybe once a week, and it only takes about a half hour. And yes, I can continue to read while it is charging.
-
There's a rumor that Amazon is going to give free Kindles to Amazon Prime subscribers. I don't know if that means it would be a gift for new subscribers only or to anyone who already subscribes.
No, I think that Bill Gates is going to give everyone a Kindle if they each forward this message to twenty people.
-
Back from food and thankfully remembered I have to be at Grant's in two hours.
-
By the by, BK, I forgot to mention I love the title!
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I allowed - well, more like forced myself - to sleep in an extra two hours. And, boy, am I glad I did. My body - and sinuses! - needed that extra sleep.
-
Good Afternoon!
It's raining in New York City.
-
Good Evening!
I started to catch up on HHW a few hours ago... And then I realized I had taken an impromptu nap... But naps are good, and I guess my body just needed that extra bit of rest.
-
And now....
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DR DRUXY!!!!!

For those DRs whole are following the Figure Skating, here's a great interactive feature from The New York Times:
The Moves They Don't Want You To See (http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2010/02/23/sports/olympics/0223-downgrade.html?src=tptw)

bk - Great title. -And, I'm guessing after some of the conversations we've had, you could have added another "name" to that sequence. -But, I'm also guessing that the title is more or less a quote. ;)
-
As for the Kindle...
Since I'm not a "constant" reader, the Kindle (and/or Nook and/or...) has no "immediate" appeal to me. However, if I were to receive one as a gift, I would definitely not return it. ;)
*I do have the complete works of Shakespeare (FREE) and the "Stanza" (FREE) and "Kindle" (FREE) apps on my iPhone for those extra long subway rides. -Yes, there are a bunch of FREE titles out there.
-

DR Jennifer - What DR MattH just said. Sometimes "our" team is clearly not the best team out there. That's not to say that we wouldn't be happy if they won, but sometimes it's very clear when the odds are stacked against them. -Even the commentators frequently remark, "Come the next Olympics, they will be true contendors...".
"Good" is not determined by what country you're from.
-
DR Jennifer - And since I happen to know a skating instructor - Orser's skate is used to show how certain jumps and elements are supposed to be done - and, consequently, judged. It is NOT used to show what will win a competition. Basically, it's a "textbook" skate - which is a good thing. -Again, take the "country" out of it. It's just about the skating.
-
I go back and forth on the Kindle. I have looked at other "readers" in stores and while I think they are cool. lol, i'm thinking how often my cell phone charge as almost run out & i've had to turn it off. How many hours of reading do you do in a week? On a sleepless night i can read for 5-6 hours.

And, where did you hear this rumor?
::)
Well, if Google could give out free Nexus One (http://techcrunch.com/2010/02/11/nexus-one-ted/) phones to all the attendees at the recent TED conference, anything is possible. -And, yes, it has been rumored about quite a bit.

Keith has an iPhone. I didn't know he could download books. That would be great when we travel, then I only have to carry my books, not his. He only takes one on a flight while I usually carry 2 books or more.

Yay!

It is indeed a quote, as you'll find out in the book. I went back and forth about whether to included the quote marks in the title treatment, and we decided to do so.
-

DR Jane - The Kindle's battery life varies according to usage and whether or not you have the "whispernet" activated. If you just use the Kindle as a "reader" - and not a "downloader", the battery can last anywhere from 30-60 hours depending how many page turns and images you display.
-

Maybe it's because we don't have that many gold medalists here. But it is a huge deal for us to be going for a gold medal.
I've cheered for another team over the US competitor if I thought they were better. If the US team had won last night, I would have felt they deserved it too. I don't think there was much difference between the silver and gold. They were completely different types of skates

Today was my 3rd day in a row of having to be up and out of the house before 9am and I'm looking forward to a leisurely morning tomorrow. My mom saw an orthopedist today for her sore back and legs and found out that it's neuro-muscular (no fractures, whew!). She's been put on an intensive regimen of ibuprofen and acetaminophen, which I hope she will follow. After appointment we shopped a bit (she loves being pushed around Kroger in a wheel chair) and had lunch. Back at her apartment, I rearranged some boxes for her and took out some trash, and then went for a quick visit with my aunt. I took a 2-hour nap when I got home in order to be able to stay up tonight for the Olympics.

Keith has an iPhone. I didn't know he could download books. That would be great when we travel, then I only have to carry my books, not his. He only takes one on a flight while I usually carry 2 books or more.
DR Jane - Yep, he can download books! There are a couple of "book" apps in the store, but Stanza and Kindle are the most popular. Stanza features mainly free - public domain - titles, so there's lots of classics available. There is a "Shakespeare" app that has all the plays and sonnets. Both apps also make it possible to adjust the print size for ease of reading. iTunes itself also has a "book store" - which has a bunch of free titles.

Congrats on the successful find!

And now, I'm work to buy some hollow wall anchors/crews. I need to put up some adjustable shelves for my DVDs and I don't have any screws.
Until later!
-
DR Ginny - Does your mother ever like to get a good "push-off" while she's being wheeled about? Wheeeeeeeee!!!! ;)
-
DR Cillaliz, I"m not sure if you and your mother have specific favorite pros on DANCING WITH THE STARS.
We've never been big fans of Lacey or Jonathan, but I'll miss Karina

However...
As for e-Readers...
The one thing I do find advantageous - not for me personally at the moment - about Apple's upcoming iPad, is that they've paired up with some textbook companies. That arrangement should not only lower the cost of a textbook, but also all that physical weight in a student's backpack.
*And it wasn't until very recently that I learned that some textbook companies are now making their textbooks available electronically for rent. They can be downloaded as a file which "expires" at the end of the semester.

Very good news DR DRUXY.
Well.....of course.....13 short years ago, I would have told you that you were crazy if you told me I would be on the computer AT my HOUSE EVERYDAY......shopping, visiting friends, and generally making a nuisance of myself....and here I am doing all three - sometimes all at once.
So I will say that there MAY be a Kindle in my future.
-
Survived THRILLER and DISCO and watched many of the other routines....interesting.....we may not win.....but we won't be LAST!

Yeah, DR Jose, once in a while, especially on a downhill slope, I'll ask my mom if she wants me to let go. That kind of wakes her up!
We did see some excitement in the Kroger parking lot today. When we got there a fire truck was parked out in the lot - not an unusual sight around here. I often see firefighters doing their grocery shopping. As we were walking into the store we heard a crash and the fire truck had totaled the front end of a nearby car. My sister told me she and her husband saw a snowplow do the same thing in their Walmart parking lot in Michigan.

Not too long ago the blood mobile knocked down a brick pillar at the courthouse here

So what's the difference between a Kindle and the other readers I've seen? I was looking at ... I think it was a Sony and wondered how it compares to the Kindle

Mt cousin Sue just sent me info on Uncle Bob; she thinks his liver is shutting down and writes that the nurses told her his kidneys are failing. The hospital's advised his sons to get him into hospice. Please keep the vibes coming!

Vibes for DR Elmore's Uncle Bob and all those who love him.
-
DR George - I hope your sister's pipe are back in proper working order.
-
I don't tend to worry about how other people watch, enjoy, or appreciate the Olympics. I do my own thing as I always have.

Vibes for Uncle Bob and for the father of a friend who was given about a month to live today. She's headed up to Idaho to be with him.

And now for something completely different...
My Little Pony Sings Showtunes! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wouG4GpL1-I)
*You can watch the whole clip, or just the first half and then the second half. ;)

When I went downstairs, I watched L.A. CONFIDENTIAL on Blu-ray. I was so excited to get that excellent transfer with Dolby TrueHD sound (but I had to switch it on the fly; this Warner disc defaults to Dolby Digital. Thankfully, Warner has stopped doing this in their most recent releases.)
What a truly masterful movie. It's breathtaking from beginning to end, so filled with so many interesting characters and a very convoluted plot that all works out beautifully at the end. How did that trio of male leads not get nominated for Oscars! Wow!
-
Next I started watching tonight's AMERCAN IDOL semifinals. I saw maybe five singers, and I was not bowled over by any of them.
Simon said the first one had probably the best female voice in the competition, and I thought that if he's not exaggerating, then it was going to be a VERY weak slate of ladies. A couple of the later ones I saw were better than that first girl. Two blondes in the first 45 minutes had the best voices of the ones I've heard, but I didn't get quite halfway through the 12 women tonight. I'll have to finish watching tomorrow.
-
I then watched LOST. Lots of surprises, new characters (I'm sure bk will have something to say about that), and new locales (that, too).
As usual, I enjoyed the ride.
And I now see that the two sides are recruiting for their cause. Smokey has Claire and Sawyer now. Looks like Jacob has Hurley and is trying for Jack. Don't know where it's going, but it sure is interesting.

And yes, I can continue to read while it is charging.
lol, i'm thinking how often my cell phone charge as almost run out & i've had to turn it off. How many hours of reading do you do in a week? On a sleepless night i can read for 5-6 hours.
DR Jane - The Kindle's battery life varies according to usage and whether or not you have the "whispernet" activated. If you just use the Kindle as a "reader" - and not a "downloader", the battery can last anywhere from 30-60 hours depending how many page turns and images you display.
Thanks, that is a lot of hours. I'm still waiting for the version with night reading capabilities.

During the LOST commercial breaks, I flipped over to the Olympics (also over-the-air-HD), and I happened to see the first little bit or Marei Nagasu's skate. Saw her land her combination perfectly. When I flipped back later, they mentioned she had done a very good job, but I didn't see the rest of the program or the results. I'll read about them tomorrow morning and catch up with the skating later.

So for the ice dancing last night, none of you guys would cheer for the US pair to win if you liked another team's performance better?
Maybe it's because we don't have that many gold medalists here. But it is a huge deal for us to be going for a gold medal.
I've cheered for another team over the US competitor if I thought they were better. If the US team had won last night, I would have felt they deserved it too. I don't think there was much difference between the silver and gold. They were completely different types of skates
I just finished watching & agree with you. After the American team finished I applauded so hard I hurt my shoulder & arm. The female half of the Canadian team constantly graceful & poised, on & off the ice. Their skate was beautiful.
I wish the other American team made the podium, mostly because I was so offended by the Russian's "Aborigine" costume & choreography.

Vibes to your mother. I hope they also gave her something to protect her stomach.

Home from a very long cover design session with Grant. We have the cover but it took a long time to get there. The photo I wanted to use just wasn't working for Grant, so that's now on the back cover. But he saw a photo that he flipped for, which he felt gave the feel of the title and the book and a sense of fun. I couldn't disagree and he designed it and even though it's a black and white photo he made it look quite good. He found a terrific font for the title, and the only thing we may change is how big the drop shadow is because it's really big and I just want to be sure it's easy to read. But I'm liking it more and more.
