As promised - a low rez image of the cover - again, I think we're going to lessen the drop shadow just a bit, but I like this more every time I look at it.

BK, both pictures are wonderful!  It did, however, take me a little bit to realize that on the cover photo you don't actually have two left legs.

Yes, we had a hard time figuring out what that was until I realized it was the camera operator in the other chair - maybe we'll remove the leg.

If the leg removal can be done easily, I'd recommend it.  But that's just me. :)

From yesterday:
DR George - I hope your sister's pipe are back in proper working order.

Thanks, Jose.  The plumber came this yesterday morning and was able to find the leaking pipe fairy quickly...he only had to cut two smallish holes in the walls and turn on the water again for a few moments to find it.  It turns out that there was a t-joint with two pipes and a hose connected to it, but the hose only had a simple clamp holding it onto the joint and that just slipped off...so no burst pipes.  The plumber said that it's not supposed to be done that way.  He also said that he did see another t-joint that was done correctly, but there's no telling how many were done correctly or not.  Fortunately, my sister's insurance will cover this repair, but quite a bit of no-longer-dry drywall will have to be replaced.

I have really enjoyed the MR WONG collection I purchased....six of the Monogram series.  Grant Withers and Majorie Reynolds are fine foils - Reynolds is in three of the six, I think.  And Mr Boris Karloff is quite good - the scripts are good - I figured out only two of them....although I was ahead of Wong by the end on all of them.

Five feature Karloff and the last one gives us Keye Luke as sort of the Son of....although it isn't said that way - in fact it could be Luke as a younger Wong.....

And for Monogram - the productions are pretty fancy.

I have the first version of the Kindle that came out and while it can show images, they are low resolution.  The current two versions available are suppose to have displays with improved image resolution.  I've never seen one so I can't say by how much they've improved.

GHOSTRIDER--I wouldnt even consider watching it.

WATCHMEN -- As someone who enjoyed the graphic novel, I found the theatrical release a frustrating experience because of what was left out.  And while I think it's visually interesting, I thought all of the performances were pretty bland and uninvolving.  I don't know what it would take to get me to sit through the director's version.

Good morning, all! I slept late and I am ready to face whatever fresh hell the day brings.

This morning I have the last two tallies for tomorrow's tax appointment. After that, I need to find a couple of scenes from musicals to take to an audition this afternoon. I'm hearing an excellent young baritone, Steven LaBrie, for these recordings of Victor Herbert music I am working on. I have to tape the audition for the recording's producer and send it to him in Philadelphia.

BK, the book cover is wonderful. As to PEPE, you and I went to a screening of it when I came out to mix Liz' first recording and UNSUNG SONDHEIM. We saw it, as I recall, in a garage that had been converted to a screening room.

Thank you all for the vibes for my uncle. I hope you will keep him in your thoughts and keep them vibes coming!

There was a winter weather alert that we might get snow this morning, but when I stepped out to get the paper, I knew it was too warm to snow. I was able to squeeze in my walk, too, before the light rain start around 8. I was SO happy I could do that and not have to resort to the treadmill.

I watched PEPE once again the last time it was on TCM, and I think that will be the last time I watch it. I do like some of the musical sequences, but much of it for me is so downright tedious that just the thought of sitting through the entire thing again is an anathma to me.

Yes, I've seen both GHOST RIDER and WATCHMEN.

I did not like GHOST RIDER at all. A waste of time. Thankfully, I saw it on Starz so I hadn't watsed rental or purchase money on it.

I did enjoy the first Blu-ray release of WATCHMEN. I found the characters interesting enough and the story held my attention. But I certainly wouldn't want to see an even longer version if it. It's long enough as it, maybe too long already.

So far, no UPS deliveries, but I'm convinced I'm going to get something in the mail today to start reviewing again, so I hate to make any nother plans for viewing today (well, apart from watching last night's WHITE COLLAR while I eat lunch).

If nothing comes to review, I'll watch the Olympic skating from last night and the rest of AMERICAN IDOL, but I have to say if the other ladies and the men tonight are as bland and/or mediocre as I heard last night, I won't be watching the rest of this IDOL season.

I did read the skating results on-line this morning. Interesting that not a single European skater landed in the top tier of skaters. They're all Asian and North American.

The European women skaters have been weak for the last few years, and it looks like these Olympics drives that point home very pointedly. Looking at last night's results, I saw several ladies in the second and third tiers of women who have been around 10 years or more on the international circuit and have never really delivered much in the way of championship results. One admires their tenacity even in the face of unwhelming results. (I'm thinking especially of the Swiss, Hungarian, Italian, and Kasikstan champions.)

re: the olympics and the 10 000m long track speed skating

Did anybody else see the Dutch skater Sven Kramer get disqualified after winning the race? I didn't see it live. But my heart breaks for him. His coach told him to go to the wrong lane.  To make it worse, they let him finish the race.  I don't get why they didn't blow a whistle or something. To let a racer skate that grueling a race, get a world record and then tell him he's DQed. Wow.

I watched SHE'S WORKING HER WAY THROUGH COLLEGE last night, and rather enjoyed it.

Reagan was very good, as he usually was in light comedies.  I particularly liked his drunk scene.

However, I was most impressed with Gene Nelson and that fantastic dance he did in the gym.  That number was as good as anything Gene Kelly ever did.

It's unfortunate that, with the exception of OKLAHOMA, Nelson never had the opportunity to appear in an "important" musical.

The quality of this Warner Archive transfer is much better than THE DAUGHTER OF ROSIE O'GRADY, but it does have some color correction problems.

Folks, I need real estate vibes as always! I spoke to a realtor in Ohio who gave me very good information so I referred him to my brother Randy. On Saturday, I asked Randy if he'd spoken to the realtor (knowing he had) and Randy lied to me! He told me a lot of bull that the realtor certainly never told me! I know he and Macbeth don't want to pay a realtor commission, and the two fools are doing nothing to sell the property so we're once again pissing away money on taxes that would probablt bother me less if I knew that there were inquiries on the damned piece of land.

I'm off to Staples.

You can get this former AI contestant's CD on Amazon - used copy for $2 or less.  Check the song titles.....Executive Producer David Foster.

I liked John Stevens on AI a lot - the last season I really watched with any notion of caring who won....if you like the songs, you may like the arrangements and the whole CD.

The only track I don't like - a jazzy MY BLUE HEAVEN....all the others nice "date" or "car" music.

There's a good one in the book, but I don't want to spoil it - it was the question that caused me to do something that basically made me realize my acting days were done.

My WB Archive disc of Mamie Van Doren's UNTAMED YOUTH arrived yesterday, and since I am home with a sore throat, I think that might be just the thing to watch today.

Mamie was only an example of half of that title when she made that movie.

If you were visiting someone who had purchased a very ugly painting - what would you say if you were asked what you thought?

I'm not a Photoshoppe expert, but I think someone with some photo editing skills could remove the other guy since there seems to be enough contrast to detect his "elements" and the surrounding background is dark enough.

Glad to hear that this was all easily fixed and the insurance is covering the damage.

And since it appears that the work was done improperly in the first place, I'm wondering if there's any additional recourse DR George's sister could and/or should take?

Yup.

Wow.

No but I read about it & felt terrible for him.

I've always love Nelson's dance number in the gym to AM I IN LOVE.  Good stuff!

Sam Katzman story:

One of his ultra-low budget epics is on its final day of shooting, and it's about to go into overtime.

There are about 10 more pages of script to film.

Katzman rips those pages out of the script and yells, "That's a wrap!"

"How can that be 'a wrap'," the director objects.  "We've got ten more pages to shoot."

Says Katzman: "Nobody'll ever miss them."

Title: Re: COVER BOY

Then I went back and finished the skating. My thoughts:

If Joannie Rochette had had a triple/triple combination instead of the triple/double, she would have won the short program. Her jumps had more zing, her spins were faster and more impressive, and her skating was just more solid and grounded, I thought.

Kim and Mao both skated impressive, clean, and difficult short programs. But I think the hype for the two of them has been laid on a little thick. They're lovely skaters, but I didn't see such a major points difference between them and some others.

Miki Ando (4th place) was given a GIFT with those scores. Her program was underwhelming, and she put her foot down on the triple/triple combination which should have cost her dearly and didn't. Her spins and spirals are VERY mediocre.

I was VERY proud of the two American girls. Rachael had the more difficult of the two programs, and I loved how she kept up with the REALLY fast "Sing, Sing, Sing" music in her footwork. (Only Kim Yu-Na had comparable footwork.) Nagasu skated a really soft, lovely program, and if she had been able to do her planned triple/triple (the same one Yu-Na landed), she would have been much closer to the leader.

Still I'm glad our girls will get to skate in the final flight although Joannie started 8th at the last Olympics and ended up 5th so it's possibly to start in the bottom of the top ten and make your way toward the top.

Since the review materials had not come (I kept checking), I started watching some SUPERMAN Season Two episodes. I began with "Jet Ace" since I like Lane Bradford so much (he guest starred as Perry White's nephew.)

As for Randy, you did kind of set yourself up for him to slant the conversation his way, knowing full well how you feel.  You “asked” if he had talked to the realtor, not that you knew he had.  He probably wanted to avoid that part of the discussion.  I wouldn’t take it too much to heart.  While I don’t agree with his approach it sounds as if he was trying to take the easy way out than to hurt you.

Have you thought about regulating this portion of your executor obligation to Randy?

And now, I believe it's time for a Max Steiner-Percy Faith interlude (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mERbQIvgJXs).

In the interesting trivia department, when Warner was launching its record label in the late 50's, they tried to woo Percy to be their A&R head.  One of the "bribes" was a slate of WB flms they would have him score, including. . .A Summer Place!

More Faith Summer Place trivia:  when Percy was presented with an advance published copy of the theme (before the film's release), he called Steiner to see if the triplet pattern had been a misprint.  ;)

One of my favorite Faith quotes, in response to a critic who disparaged his multi-Platinum "easy listening" arrangements:  "You find as you grow older you enjoy driving Cadillacs more and more."

Incredibly, through virtually his entire 30 year career at Columbia, he managed to release at *least* 3 albums a year (usually with 12 songs each), as well as provide arrangements for such "up and comers" as Doris Day, Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis, et al.  A protean talent, and one who is sadly underappreciated from any number of standpoints.

I am having an afternoon of dealing with a Canadian diva of the Christian contemporary music variety who is coming to perform in Portland.  Her "list of demands" is truly hilarious, all the more funny as I already explicitly denied them in the chain of emails included in the new, improved list of demands from her agent.  You know, when you're asking someone to basically give you a top notch performance space, and the person is volunteering to help set you up, run your sound, and take care of ticket sales, I pretty much think the rest of the responsibilities are yours.

I had a rather large contretemps with the author of the only musical.  He's a big, huge bully boy, totally irrational, and crazy as a bedbug.  Everyone on the creative team has had to deal with it - it's like he has to have a villain every day.  Well, today, he totally took an amusing and completely innocuous thing I said and had an unbelievably embarrassing fit in front of everyone in the room - the composer, the lyricist, our star, and someone who's doing our private reading.  I should have just sat there and let him do his things, but after having seen him do it so much to so many I blew up.  At one point, because he wouldn't stop, I threatened to knock him on the ground and let me tell you had he not stopped I would have.  Then on our next break, I took him in the other room alone and told him this could never ever happen again.  It's what I should have done rather than blow up, but we're all slaves to our buttons and emotions.  I'm sick to death of his drama and I told him so.  And he's never wrong - it's always someone else's fault.  He agreed to not do it again - I told him that if he EVER has a problem with anything I say or do all he has to do is pull me aside and mention it, out of earshot of others.

Then, after the session, I talked to the lyricist and we both feel that it's time to really dress this guy down and we're going to do it (along with the composer) after the reading on Friday.  Before I step one foot in a rehearsal room with actors, I want his assurance that nothing like this will happen, and my collaborators want it, too.  One of them was the victim a couple of nights ago and she called me to tell me she was close to walking away - I told her I wouldn't blame her.

Nothing serious - just the tensioner that makes the serpintine belt go round decided to spit off a gear and make the power steering go away

Fortunaltey I was in teh right lane, dving reasonably slowly and only a few feet from the entrance to a parking lot where the Vixter & I could safely await the arrival of help

I just finished watching.  I was shocked at the scoring for Miki Ando & expected at least one of the American skaters to finish ahead of her.  I thought Nagasu's spins were beautiful.  It was cute that she spun so fast her nose bled.  I was very moved by the story her mother wears clothes with holes in them so her daughter can skate.

When Joannie broke down & cried I did to.

Still I'm glad our girls will get to skate in the final flight although Joannie started 8th at the last Olympics and ended up 5th so it's possibly to start in the bottom of the top ten and make your way toward the top.

So did Scott Hamilton. He couldn't speak at all during the performance (none of the commentators did), and you could tell he was shaking with emotion as he tried to talk after it was over.

I put in the VHS tape of the 2002 world championships in which our men's champion Timothy Goebel landed three quads and finished with a silver medal. Yagudin won gold as he had done at the Olympics. I was thinking the ladies world championship was on this tape, but the tape went right from 2002 men's to 2003 men's, so the ladies must be somewhere else. I didn't bother searching.

Since I was going to start IDOL at 9, I watched SUPERMAN episodes until then. I got two watched. First up was "The Face and the Voice" in which George Reeves played a crook who has plastic surgery in order to look like Superman. DUring the show, he plays this crook, Superman, and Clark Kent, all very well. Poor George was underrated as an actor.

Then I watched what is considered the best of the black and white episodes: "Panic in the Sky." It is a good episode even though there are more bloopers in this episode than in others in the series. Since Jack Larson and Noel Neill did commentary on the show, I turned their track on instead of the actual show track. Of course, they get absorbed in watching the episode and forget to talk during a good portion of it.

MattH, do you know if there somewhere on the internet where you can find last nights  skating?

Then I watched AMERICAN IDOL. It was the top 12 men in the semifinals tonight, and, similar to last night, I didn't find much to praise. There is no breakout star like Adam Lambert in the group. I did like maybe three of the voices I heard tonight (not necessarily the song choices, however), but I didn't really flip for anyone.

I'm still trying to decide if I will continue watching this season. I may give it one more week.

msnbc.com posted the men's final skates a day or two after they happened. They may have the ladies short programs posted by now. You'll have to pick each skater and watch if it's anything like the way they had the men. Go to the results page and you'll see the icon to select for viewing the program.

I've been told by my boss that I should be receiving PONYO tomorrow, so if I do, that will be my work project for the day. If it doesn't come for some reason, I'll be doing YOJIMBO. Both are Blu-ray releases.

BK, I did this in about 30 seconds in Paint--I'm sure Grant could do a more artful job in 60 seconds with Photoshop:

Hi Vixmom! Glad you were going slow when you car decided to go bonkers.   I was driving really slow around a curve once and the wheel came off my blazer and started rolling down the road.  I had to jump out of the car and chase it.  Most unseemly

Good Evening!

I'm back from Carnegie Hall...

Joshua Denk and Jeremy Denk gave a wonderful recital: Bach, Saint-Saëns, Schumann and Ravel - with a bit of Dvorak/Kreisler for an encore.  My friends Brendan and Jennifer joined me, and it turned out to be Brendan's first time at Carnegie Hall!  -And to top the evening off, we headed backstage afterwards to say Hi to Jeremy.

*And I'd like to say a very public "Thank You" to the ushering staff in the Balcony for reprimanding the gentleman(?) in Row A, Seat 44, for continually texting during the first half of the recital.  One usher spoke to him at the top of intermission, and the head usher spoke to him right as the intermission was ending. He "behaved" during the second half of the recital - although, I could still tell he was texting every now and then, but at least he placed his phone in front of him and covered the screen with his hands instead of holding it out to the side(!?!?!?).

And as I was leaving Carnegie Hall, I received a text from my dear friend, Leigh. She was having a drink at a bar over on 9th Ave, so I went over to say Hi and give her hug.  She just came up from DC for the night to see a friend in a show.  Hopefully, she'll be able to get back down to DC tomorrow without too much weather-related drama.  In any case... Even though it was a very short "visit", it was great to see her again.

I love Percy Faith. That is all.

Mr. Barnum, are you planning on coming up to Olympia to see George in THE BRAIN this Spring?

I would very much like to do that, yes!

Please do!!  Maybe everyone can coordinate their arrival times and we can have a big HHW gathering!  Of course, no one in the cast will know who any of you are, but I will! :D

What kind of car do you drive Laura?  Mine is a 1995 Taurus wagon - Derspite havibg just put $850.00 into it just before Christmas and now another $850.00  0 (beside the tensioner I apparently needed a radiator flush, a new Hub bearing and an alignment  )  I have been instructed by the Power that Be to get rid of that damn car before it kills you

As soon as I get my income tax refund (it should be deposited on Friday!), I'm getting my car serviced.  It's been too long and I need to get it done.

Well, I'm leaving now.  My sister and niece are coming over for dinner because their kitchen was flooded last night.

Until later!

Could you ask your sister to put together that new bookcase for you while she is there?

No, not until her house is fixed. ;)

But now I can't find the shelves!  I have the brackets, but not the actual shelves. :P
