Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a touch of drama but not any chaos, and now it is time for you to post until the chaotic cows come home.

My favorite Marvin Hamlisch scores are A Chorus Line (LOVE IT) and They're Playing Our Song...which I've never seen.  I only know it from the recordings.

Hey, John G. If you want Anthony Trollope books in e-format go to Project Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page)

They have thousands of FREE books for download on many different electronic devices, including your PC or, if you get an e-reader, the Kindle or the Nook, etc.

They have all of Anthony Trollope's novels at this page.

Anthony Trollope (http://www.gutenberg.org/browse/authors/t#a324)

We just recently watched some BBC adaptations of three of his works, The Barchester Chronicles, The Way We Live Now (with the amazing David Souchet) and He Knew He Was Right. Now I would like to read the books.

Good news from DR VIXMOM (Carnegie Hall) and scary news as well (car).

DR VIXMOM - I love my PT Cruiser, although of course they are now discontinued.  If you find a good deal on one 2006-2008, you might consider it.

TOD:

I second DR GEORGE's choices for stage:

A CHORUS LINE
THEY'RE PLAYING OUR SONG

For film, I differ:

Ice Castles followed closely by The Way We Were  ;D

And of course his brief appearance in VALLEY OF THE DOLLS as Neely O'Hara's rehearsal pianist.  ;)

Good morning, all! I have a day of events which begins soon with a trip to the post office to mail the Steven LaBrie audition tape to our producer. I will then work on scores for THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER at Toyland until it's time for my tax appointment. After that, it's back to Toyland for meetings on status of all works in progress. A long day indeed. The only good thing is that my tax accountant's office is next door to Toyland. When the office manager found the new office space in 2007, I told my colleagues that I knew the building since my accountant's offcie was there. I had no idea we would end up directly next door to him.

Time to head out.

I am pack up the last of my stuff up here in my office to take home today in case I don't make it in tomorrow.  *Sigh*...I'm going to miss having an office with a window and a nice view...

Thanks. I think "He Knew He Was Right" is my favorite out of the 50 I've read and I saw the TV version first. The book somehow portrays the madness even darker than the movie, but without all the psychological terminology or "insight" that would be available post-Freud.

The first issue of San Antonio Taste magazine rolls off the press in less than an hour. I'm quite nervous. Hope it looks even better in print as it did in proofs.

TOD: "They're Playing Our Song," which still works on stage (though it was never a mental blockbuster, it worked largely because of the music) and, as DR Kerry put it, "Smile," what I've heard so far.

As for the movies, I liked his work on "Pennies from Heaven" even more than what he did for "The Sting." And I'm a sappy sentimentalist, I'm sure, but I liked the music for "The Way We Were."

I watched the Danny Thomas version of THE JAZZ SINGER last night from the Warner Archive Collection.

I love the songs, particularly Sammy Fain's "Living the Life," but the screenwriters of this remake really stripped the film of any real drama.  The climatic moment, where Thomas has to choose between going on stage opening night or going to his ailing father, fell flat.

The color transfer is not great, but okay.

Thursday morning greetings!  Another quiet day for me, which is good because the first 3 weeks in March might be pretty exhausting.  Next week, Richard and I have some excursions planned that I will describe as they unfold.  Then the weeks of March 8 and 15, I'm "on call" for jury duty, which means I might have to go to Hamilton, OH, and I might not.  But I have to keep my calendar clear, just in case.

DR Jose i just read your comment re: the olympics and the dutch skater being DQed in the 10 000. No i did not see his pre-race interview. Why? I did however, yesterday, see a post race interview with both the skater and the coach, which was interesting.

The skater said that he would continue with the coach since they had been together for so long and had so much success.

The coach took full blame. But the interesting part to me was that he said that normally at any race he is allowed to have another person there to write down the lanes. But they are strict at the olympics and he had to do that himself and made the error. I wonder why they would allow this in other races (i'm assuming he meant that) but not at the olympics when it could be extra beneficial.

I'm just reading DRs Jane and MattH's comments about the ladies short program.

RE: scott hamilton being near tears during Joannie Rochette's short program (her mother went to vancouver to watch her and died unexpectedly of a heart attack a few days ago).

I don't know if NBC showed brian orser (canadian olympian and now yu-na kim's coach). He was crying too.  And the canadian announcers didn't speak at all either. AFterwards Elizabeth Manley (who is one of the commentators on CTV) said she wasn't talking because her and the other announcer were crying.

I was actually so proud that Joannie skated as well as she did.  It seems the women fall much less than the men (is that due to them not doing the extremely difficult jumps?).

I really hope she has a clean skate tonight.

Another comment re: the women's skating. I did really enjoy yu-na kim. And the crowd loves her (not sure if it's mostly cause she trains in canada). But watching felt like i was watching little kids. They all seemed so young. I know the top 2 are 19.  The top american looked way younger (and since they said she had to do her schoolwork i'm guessing she is 16-17).

Yes, the final skate tonight should be a good one and a memorable one with so many stories in the background to make it more than just about who gets the gold. As usual, I'll be recording and then watching it tomorrow. If it's anything like the men's final, I'll be asleep before the final skater even takes the ice.

I really like Hamlisch's score for the West End floperoo JEAN SEBERG.  BK's close personal acquaintance Brian (?) from A1 Record Finders on Melrose gave me a copy years ago when I spent lots (as in LOTS) of moolah getting old, rare OCR's, long before we ever started seeing them on CD.

As I mentioned, I was gobsmacked to see Hamlisch co-wrote SUNSHINE, LOLLIPOPS AND RAINBOWS, so I'll include that.  But I also have a soft spot for a little known Hamlisch piece (Babs recorded it) called THE BEST THING YOU'VE EVER DONE.  I sang that at my very first audition for a musical when I was a kid and got one of the featured parts in the show for which I was trying out.

As for the Topic of the Day...

A Chorus Line - Some of my favorite moments are the bits of underscore - which I've always wondered if they were pulled from his "trunk".  -Pardon that convoluted grammar.
They're Playing Our Song - "Fallin'" still gives me the warm-fuzzies.
Smile - Alas, I've heard "Disneyland" butchered at many an audition, so...
The Goodbye Girl - "No More", "My Rules" (which is just fun to play), "How Can I Win?"

We had a moving interview with Dan Jansen (speed skater who's sister died the same day he had to skate in the '94 Olympics. He was set to win the Gold & fell) talking about his personal experience & the email he sent to Joannie.  He was hoping the few days gave her the time she needed before skating.

I keep waiting for the day someone sues PETA & wins big time.  This billboard, of course, was not authorized by Woods.  I hesitate to share it & give them the attention they want it to receive.  I find it hard to imagine this would encourage anyone to spay or neuter their pets.

I haven't been watching NBC the past few days. I did not see dan jansen talk about this. Although i did see him on CTV last week being interviewed re: one of our speedskaters (jeremy witherspoon). Jeremy is considered one of the greatest long track speedskaters of all time. But he has not won gold. And they were interviewing jansen to see his opinion (since he was one of the greatest and almost didn't win).

DR MattH we are still a few weeks behind on Project Runway. But don't be surprised if it's not new tonight. It's not listed as being new on tv guide.com (although they do sometimes forget things). They have Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice and The Mentalist as being repeats.

At first I read that he didn't win, yet I remember watching him win the following Olympics.  Now I see "almost" didn't win :)  I don't normally watch speed skating but I did watch him because of his story.

So did Scott Hamilton. He couldn't speak at all during the performance (none of the commentators did), and you could tell he was shaking with emotion as he tried to talk after it was over.

It was really something.  I hope she can hold it together one more time.

I wouldn't wish what happened to Joannie on anyone for anything, but it sure was nice to watch a competitive routine without commentary.

Sometimes i wonder if the announcers know when to speak. I personally don't like it when they babble. But i do like it when they tell which jumps are coming up. And what jump they did do (for example if they do a double instead of a triple).

I am very confused about AMERICAN IDOL. Why were some contestants amazing during hollywood week. Yet they have no clue what to sing on live tv. Maybe it is the hugeness of doing it live that is making the difference. But last night they were almost all bad.

My favorite two are casey (who actually was the only one who did well). He is the guy with long blonde hair who kara has been drooling over. And Andrew Garcia (he went last). Hopefully he will be much better next week.

I am home at last! While I was out, I checked my phone messages, and I had this one from Jo Sullivan Loesser: "What are you doing out in this weather?" So I called her back from Toyland to tell her it hadn't been so terrible when I left home this morning; the flakes were huge but not sticking. Well, times change.

On the tax front, I am getting back from the State about $9 and from the IRS about $700! I am quite happy with the outcome. I also helped my colleague and dear friend Curtis Moore pack up and ship out the most irritating project I ever resigned from, and may the fools that made it so awful and unhappy for me and my colleagues rot in hell. Forever. Never trust a drunk.

I watched last night's PSYCH while I ate lunch. A very silly program, and while I will probably stay with the show through the end of its current season, I'll likely drop it when it comes back. The mysteries aren't much any more, and the Shawn character has moved to beyond ridiculous.

Then I watched PONYO on Blu-ray. It's a family film but aimed at the younger tykes, a kind of adaptation of THE LITTLE MERMAID so it's a clear fantasy.

The animation is certainly arresting and unusual (waves portrayed as giant fish, for example), but it was pretty long for such a juvenile story - 103 minutes.

The English dub on this disc has a strong cast: Cate Blanchette, Liam Neeson, Betty White, Cloris Leachman, Tina Fey, Lily Tomlin, Matt Damon. And siblings of Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers play the two young characters, so the families were already on the Disney payroll.

Lots of bonus features, too, though most were little vignettes of 2-3 minutes.

The biggest bonus is an interactive map of the four Hayao Miyazaki films which Disney is distributing which offers more than 3 hours of games, previews, summaries, highlights, etc. all in 1080p.

As far as TV watching tonight, since there's basically nothing new for me until after I go to bed, I may check in with the IDOL results and the Olympics to see the lower ranked skaters (if they show any skating before 10 p.m. which I doubt.) I may also watch THE MENTALIST rerun tonight rather than waiting to watch it tomorrow while I eat lunch.

So, I'm listening to the original Broadway cast recording of Dear World on my computer here at work and the Windows Media Player can go to the Internet and get the show/performer/composer information and display that in the player.  Sometimes it's not very accurate and I have to manually edit the info.  For instance, for the composer, it shows Jerry Herman as composer for all the songs except for the Overture and the Finale.  For the Finale, it lists three people as the composers:  Geoffrey Burgon; Jerry Herman; Stephen Schwartz!

And the list of composers for the Overture are:

David Shire; George Gershwin; Harold Rome; Janet Gari; Jerry Herman; Jerry Ross; John Kander; Leonard Bernstein; Leslie Bricusse; Mark Mancina; Michel Legrand; Miklós Rózsa; Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky; Richard Adler; Richard Rodgers; Stan Freberg; Trevor Rabin

What's that all about??

Jennifer, I was speaking about Simon's role in selecting the 24 semifinalists. He should get one vote, and if his vote is weighed more heavily with the producers than the other three, then he could sabotage the show by selecting poor singers if he wished. I don't believe that's the case

I've been off in another tab sending a Facebook message to someone I friended earlier today.  My senior year in high school, I played Monica Breedlove in "The Bad Seed," and a very convincing sophomore played Rhoda.  I discovered today that she was posting on the fan page for our old neighborhood.  In response to my friend request, she sent me a message telling me how much she had looked up to me then and how she'd considered me a mentor.  Now, this was 40+ years ago and made me realize that you never know how you're influencing someone.

She's also the second old neighborhood friend to comment on the color of my hair - LOL!

I was supposed to get MATLOCK to review (coming out on Tuesday), but Paramount sent me HAVE GUN WILL TRAVEL (Season 4, Volume 1) instead, so I guess I'll be working on it starting tomorrow. Since they're only half hour episodes and only half a season, I should be able to do them in two days.

Anyway, that'll be my work assignment and YOJIMBO will just have to wait until I finish these two TV box sets. I'll have to tackle MATT HUSTON at some point next week. However, GENTLEMEN BRONCOS is coming at some point next week from Fox, so that should break up the monotony of too many TV box sets in a row.

The first SUPERMAN episode I watched was "The Boy Who Hated Superman." The actor playing Frankie goes from tough to tender very quickly, but he's a good actor. I've always liked this episode.

And then we get a Jack Larson tour de force in "Semi-Private Eye," one of the show's most hilarious episodes, all due to Jack's fun Bogart impression and great comic business.

I skimmed through the first elimination show on IDOL. I have to say they didn't kick off the worst singers, especially the two guys. Looks like this show is going to be toast for me this season.

I saw a few sporadic free skates on NBC while I was waiting to start THE MENTALIST. Of course, these were lower ranked skaters, and much of the skating was mediocre or worse, but NBC was filling the time with very little of the lower ranked skaters and lots of other events.

Then I watched THE MENTALIST rerun, the infamous episode where a squad is wiped out by a Red John associate. Good episode. I wasn't surprised the first time around with the identity of the killer, so I was ready for it even more this time since I did remember who it was.

They have already announced that once they get to the medal contenders it will be without interruption.  That doesn't necessarily mean commercial free

And we lost a DR who posted A LOT of entertaining posts that usually resulted in many comments - but we're working on it.

I do not like ANY recording of the musical of THE GOODBYE GIRL or the show itself.  I am happy it found an audience with some - but include me out.

Martin Short........disturbing to me.....so I haven't made it a point to watch or listen to much he is involved in.....I am usually sorry if I do.

Well, I'm not a fan of drama and chaos and that's what this month has been.  Drama and chaos and then silence.  I think things will be calming down soon.  I can't wait.  Edith told me I'm a workaholic today.  Well she said it in a way that it was just assumed.  I suppose that's probably right, but i don't think of myself that way

Tomorrow night I've been invited to a get together at the home of the friend who did the artwork in my office.  They arrived back from Saipan a couple days ago.  I really need a nice casual night out with friends.

This week is also our big home show.  I may actually go in the afternoon tomorrow before the weekend crowds.  It's a huge home show with lots and lots of freebies.  I mean everyone needs a new yardstick every year, right?

Sunday we are meeting at 1:00 PM to watch the films for the film festival and choose a judges favorite.   There is drama in that group too. Really more a clearing of the air.   One person is just doing everything her way without ever having meetings or telling anyone what she is doing.  So, there is no communication and we haven't had any films shown in months.  The natives are getting restless.  I don't think it will be major drama, but one never knows.

Earlier tonight, I headed back to Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall for tonight's concert by The New York Philharmonic. On tonight's program - which will be repeated tomorrow morning at 11:00am(?!?!?!?) and Saturday evening - which was under the baton of Guest Conductor, David Robertson:

Ravel - Mother Goose Suite
Barber - Violin Concerto - with Gil Shaham as the soloist
Bartok - "The Wooden Prince"

Alas, I think I really got spoiled by Maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin and his Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra players two weeks ago, since I just kept wishing for "more" throughout tonight's concert. It wasn't a bad concert by any means, but for a concert programmed with "magical" pieces, there was some magic missing.  Even Gil Shaham had an interesting night intonation-wise during the first movement of the Barber - and I could tell that he was feeling a bit unsteady before the second movement started. However, the moto perpetuo third movement rocked!

The NY Phil also used surtitles during the Bartok to describe what was happening in the "plot".  It sort of worked, but then, inevitably, you read things like: "Then he had an idea," - then you heard the "idea" in the orchestra.  -"Then he had another idea..." <ding>  But the most memorable one was: "She was ashamed of her baldness." Alas, all those surtitles did was kind of distract me from the music-making as well as make me want to see the ballet.

*And I'm really wondering who is going to show up for tomorrow morning's 11:00am concert? Tonight's concert was only about 60% full, and a slew of people left at intermission.  -If tomorrow's concert was meant as a school concert, well, with the snow... Hmm....

All the skating was fun to watch this year.  There were so many personal bests and only a little grumbling.  The new system seems to work pretty well.  At least it doesn't totally favor one country over another and seems to be much more fair

*It was interesting to read that since the group numbers are not a part of the contest, that the contestants are paid the standard AFTRA scale of "from $1,011 for a one-hour show to $1,540 for a two-hour episode" for those performances.
