Title: A COCKEYED OPTIMIST
Post by: bk on February 28, 2010, 11:45:05 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both cockeyed and optimistic, and now it is time for you to post until the cockeyed cows come home.

Amazon.com's listing (http://www.amazon.com/Love-Never-Andrew-Lloyd-Webber/dp/B002S0OBMS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1267429287&sr=8-2) actually has preview clips.  I thought that Amazon wouldn't put up preview clips until the actual release date.

Well, it's 3:45 am and I've been up for the past hour. I am also very angry about it. Very.

About an hour ago I went to the bathroom to discover the bathroom rug soaking wet and plaster all over the floor, something that occurred between 11 pm last night and now, but I couldn't have heard it because of the damned earplugs I wear because of the neighbor above me! So, after a short debate on cleaning up the mess or going back to bed, I opted to go back to bed, only at that point the neighbor arrived home and I got to hear 30 minutes of his squeaky bed while he and whomever have sex. I figured then, screw it, since he is, got up and cleaned up the bathroom. Now I'm so angry that I cannot sleep.

The leak has been going on for some time, bit it stopped for a while. It was back yesterday afternoon when I returned hme from Toyland. Since I don't know if it's caused by the neighbor above me or another apartment, it's difficult to find the source. I know it was gone for a while but now it's back.

Looped (http://www.loopedonbroadway.com/)

was great fun. Ms. Harper was excellent. She's funny and has a great vocal sound. Her raucous laugh is wonderful and she has an excellent sense of comedy and timing. Brian Hutchison plays the film editor pressed into directing the session. He plays frustrated very well but, especially in the first act, there is a sameness to some of the dialogue and action, more a fault of the play, I think, than the performances. He shines (as does Harper) in the second act in his breakdown scene (no spoilers here but it was clear to both me and my friend what his "secret" was). Poor Michael Mulheren seems to be playing almost off-stage characters. He spends the show up in the engineer's booth. If the show was re-written you could probably find a way to eliminate the character completely. That's not to say Mulheren isn't good. He is, but the character is secondary. The production is excellent and the talent is wonderful but at times the play seems a bit contrived to me. Also the depiction of alcohol and drug use seems a bit off in terms of how Miss Bankhead (sorry, I mean Tallulah...an inside joke from the show) recovers in the second act to be as lucid as she becomes. This was my view and confirmed by a friend who is actually "in recovery" and has been sober for over 13 years. Oh, well, it's dramatic license.

All in all I think it's well worth seeing and I think Ms. Harper will get some well deserved kudos.

When it played here there wasn't the character of the engineer. just a 2 character play. They went through two actors playing the looper

TOD: I was going to say the "Die Hard" movies and "Terminator," but then my brain kicked in and I remembered those were mindless '80s movies (I'm getting old).

So, I would have to say the early Guy Ritchie movies, like "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and "Snatch." They're fun, they're mindless.

I like Jason Statham's movies, too, like "Transporter" and the "Death Race" remake. He's got a low-key, engaging personality that makes the flicks fun.

The super has been here to see the mess and tackled the neighbor upstairs, who's clearly been having problems with his loose toilet and doing nothing about it. In fact, while the super was here, there was water dripping from the ceiling. So, I guess a plumber will be visiting my neighbor in the near future, and I will get a ceiling repair wihen all the wet plaster dries out. Of course, the big question is, how soon will the plumber make a visit?

There are days, but only a few, I envy house owners. I've mopped the bathroom for the second time in two days. I'm hoping the super has got a plumber on the way, and. much as my neighbor has been irritating me, I have no urge to fight with him or get him into trouble with the landlord.

I just pre-ordered Andrew Lloyd Webber's latest, Love Never Dies (http://www.dresscircle.co.uk/product.asp?StockID=35873) from Dresscircle.co.uk.  Is anyone else planning on getting it?

I might--but I have to hear some of it first before I decide...

What really p's me off about this recording is that it's being touted as the cast recording for the show.  It goes on sale next week, which means that it was recorded, mixed, manufactured and packaged at least a few weeks ago.  And the show played its first preview before an audience only last Sunday night.  So does that mean that the show is frozen?  That there will be no major changes to the score or story or cast before it opens?  That this recording will be continue to be an accurate snapshot of the show?

Maybe I'm being cynical, but I suspect that ALW wanted to get this recording out on the pre-order market before any word on the show leaked out.  I understand that a composer does not make big bucks on any recording, but this being an ALW show (and PHANTOM related, to boot), it's sure to be a major seller.  So regardless of how LOVE NEVER DIES is received on stage, money is being made...

My favorite mindless action picture from the 1990s is ARMAGEDDON. It's a pure popcorn picture with really banal writing and is way too long for the story it tells. Still, by the end, I was in tears. I fell right into the emotional trap they set for me.

DR George, thirty years ago I was exactly like you: every new cast recording had to be in my possession. Then I realized one day that many of them, especially the revival cast recordings with new arrangements and reduced orchestras, weren't worth the time or waste of money. I'd only be interested in the new A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC if it had Tunick's orchestrations and it does not.  As to ALW's newest, I would only want to hear it for Larry Blank's orchestrations - I do believe and he did them all, no matter what the credit says - but I'll find it down the pike in a used CD store for a lot less than its current selling price.

At least she was in '53 in Abbott & Costello go to Mars.

In 1954, she did DESTRY for producer Stanley Rubin, and she was definitely a brunette in that one.

And why have i had this cold for like a month?  I've been sleeping practically sitting up every night!

At least for the past week i have not really had to take any meds. Although my nose still runs and i still get sinus headaches a lot. Thankfully 2 advils (cold and sinus) seem to help. So whenever it gets really bad i end up doing that (and the 2 for the day works).

Yes, we've had keys since Friday.  Starting the long repair/upkeep process, which will take a few weeks.  However, I think maybe we'll move in toward the end of March so that we might have Passover in the new house.

It's been years (and years) since I've seen it.  A bit overblown, way oversimplified in terms of the source novel, but good in that late 50's Hollywood epic sort of way.  Fun to see William Shatner in one of his first roles.

Before I left for lunch, I had time to watch last night's BROTHERS & SISTERS. Too much silly comic situation for my taste and again the drama mostly comes about from people not talking about what's bothering them and keeping secrets until they just burst forth when they can't hold them in any more. Very tedious.

Lunch ran very late. We ran into a mutual friend at lunch when we had almost finished eating. He asked if he could join us, and so we talked while he ate his lunch. That made it very late when I got back home to start work.

Because it was so late, I made a last minute change and decided to begin on MATT HOUSTON today. The first episode was the 90+ minute Movie-of-the-Week pilot episode, so I only got that and one regular length episode watched.

The movie had Jill St. John and Dale Robertson as the primary guest stars. It certainly set up the premise well: millionaire playboy who enjoys playing private eye while underlings deal with all of his other business interests. Almost all of his assistants are luscious females whom he constantly flirts with. Interesting that he has a "super" computer at his home/office he goes to for information - an Apple III.

It's an Aaron Spelling production so everything is slick, brightly colorful, and as deep as a teaspoon.

Lee Horsley, of course, is VERY easy on the eyes.

The second episode had Bradford Dillman, Stuart Whitman, Murray Hamilton, and Heather Locklear as the primary guest stars. There are a set of regulars who are kind of go-fer/stooges for Matt, but they really don't seem to be taking much part in the actual case work.

I just pre-ordered Andrew Lloyd Webber's latest, Love Never Dies (http://www.dresscircle.co.uk/product.asp?StockID=35873) from Dresscircle.co.uk.  Is anyone else planning on getting it?

Does this explain, DR Elmore, why I have eight different recordings of "Annie Get Your Gun," even though it's not one of my more favorite scores? I mean there's one with someone named Susie Quattro, and I haven't a clue as to who she is. But it must have been $4 or $5 in a used CD bin someplace, so it ended in the collection, along with the two Ethels, the Mary, the Bernadette, the Delores, the Betty and the John McGlinn.

But I still think it sucks that Kym and Karina will not be on the show this season. It would be one thing if they did not want to be on. But for them to not ask back people's favorites is crazy.

I have never been a fan of the terminator movies

DR JANE - KARAMAZOV was okay.....some good performances, but read the book instead.  And the sound mix was very low.  I had my speakers up about 1/3 more than I usually do, and some of the actors were still very very quiet.

Thank you.  I'm glad I passed.  I did read and enjoy the book.

I've been making some notes on the long musical, but I'm bored and am stopping.  I'm just going to say what I have to say, give some suggestions, and send the author on his way to make a new outline of acts one and two.

Sorry to hear about the leak. I understand your frustration. I came home from work once to a completely flooded house. That was a nightmare I hope I never have to live through again.

i like Jason Statham very much.  those are also my 2 favorites, of his movies i have seen.

You better hope the plumber isn't a woman!

Tonight they are going to announce the new celebs for this season's DANCING WITH THE STARS. I thought all the names would have been leaked. But i've only seen a few (kate gosselin and perhaps pamela anderson). I am still really annoyed with the show for dumping so many of their popular professional. Apparently Kym asked for more money so they canned her too (in addition to karina, lacey and jonathan). And Dimitri won't be on this season most likely either. :(

I read Greg Louganis is probably going to be one of the contestants.

Then I might go back to watching DANCING WITH THE STARS.

DR George, thirty years ago I was exactly like you: every new cast recording had to be in my possession. Then I realized one day that many of them, especially the revival cast recordings with new arrangements and reduced orchestras, weren't worth the time or waste of money.

Back to MATT HOUSTON for a moment. The shows are slightly amusing. Lee Horsley has a kind of sub-Tom Selleck joviality about his playing that makes him appealing, but I can see why they dropped the angle of all these people at his office clamboring for him to sign papers, approve deals, etc. once the show moved past season one. It gets in the way of the investigations. And apart from Pamela Hensley, the other regulars are just useless.

Hello, everyone.

George, congrats to you on your clean house! IMHO, organization is a very personal thing. I used to know a dance teacher who kept spare plastic bags in the refrigerator. It seemed quite logical to her, because that's where she kept the food that she usually put in them. Her logic was not my logic, but I guess it worked for her! In any case, I know how easy it is for a house to get cluttered and how time-consuming it is to undo it all.
