Today at 11:30 or so, I'm having brunch with my friend Margo at a restaurant in downtown Olympia.  The problem is that I don't remember which restaurant that we're going to because I'd never heard of nor been to this restaurant.  I'll just have to call her before I leave and hope that I can get a hold of her.

After that, I'm coming home and have no plans.  Maybe today I'll finally get my shelves put up.  We'll see.

Today I'll be working on IN VANDA'S ROOM, another of the Pedro Costa films taking place in the slum ghetto of Fontainhas in Lisbon.

My biggest fear is the length of the film: 171 minutes! From what I understand, all of these films are done with the same slow, quiet, long take style that was in the film I watched last night, OSSOS. But it was 97 minutes, and this is almost TWICE that length! I have a feeling it's going to be a LONG afternoon. I'd LOVE to be proven wrong.

I do have a new BROTHERS & SISTERS tonight, but, of course, I won't see it until tomorrow.

NBC is starting a new game show tonight as well as the new season of CELEBRITY APPRENTICE. Certainly not interested in that.

CBS has new episodes of its shows also like AMAZING RACE and COLD CASE.

And The Song Of The Day Is: THERE'S A LULL IN MY LIFE

One of my favourite songs. I have a great version with Harry Richman singing it.  One with Alice Faye, I believe one with Buddy Clark, and a recent terrific version with Johnny Crawford and his 1920's dance band.

There's a whole generation of "kids" who grew up on this movie, still love this movie and still watch this movie regularly. Although, now those "kids" usually watch the movie while in an "enhanced" state of mind and body.  It's also one of those movies on the "Midnight Movie" circuit.

As for myself, I don't think I've ever seen it all the way through. However, I do remember it being in heavy rotation on HBO, and I'm guessing that's what may have turned me off about it.

When I went down, I began watching the latest episode of SPARTACUS. Some new gladiators-in-training on display, but it was certainly an uber-violent episode.

Also, every single female character, with the exception of one slave, is so catty and selfish and condescending. It's VERY monotonous.

Then I skimmed through Thursday's episode of AS THE WORLD TURNS (delayed here due to the ACC Basketball Tournament). This is the episode where it was revealed that Dr. Pill is gay. From here on in, it's supposed to begin to get interesting between him and Luke. He and Luke are on Friday's show (which I'll watch tomorrow).

For some reason, the DVR did not record the CASTLE rerun from last night (if there was one; maybe there wasn't). Anyway, while I ate lunch, I watched Thursday night's THE OFFICE. It was an OK episode; Kathy Bates was guest starring again, and she always makes things interesting and fun. She should do more comedy.

Then I spent 171 minutes of my life I'll never get back watching IN VANDA'S ROOM, almost three hours of watching heroin addicts smoking and/or injecting themselves. There was really no story, just a bunch of random scenes with Vanda and her sister constantly smoking smack and a group of guys living in a hovel shooting up. The barrio is being torn down around them, so the guys have to try to find somewhere else to live. It's just an abysmal viewing experience.

There was a COMMENTARY for this awful film by the director and another director friend of his talking about the people (who basically play themselves). He shot the film on digital video, and it was framed at 4:3 rather than 1.66:1 like OSSOS was framed on film. (I suspect in theatrical engagements, it was matted to fit a more widescreen frame).

Well, I'm here, but I'm going to hop off-line for a bit and do some writing. Then, it's back downstairs to finish up this Costa box set (ugh!) with another (likely) endless shot-on-digital video-film COLOSSAL YOUTH. I see from the credits that the same female drug addict from IN VANDA'S ROOM is also in this, so I'm not looking forward to seeing it. Surely, it can't ALSO be about drug addicts.

I am not E & T, just been wrassling old people. Greg's brother had mom duty last night but his back gave out as he was lifting her and they both slid down to the floor and had to wait for Greg to arrive to help. Today it took 3 of us to get her out of bed, cleaned up and fed. Then we went to see his dad in the hospital, and when we were getting ready to leave, his sister, who had taken over for the afternoon, called to say that she and Greg's brother realized that she was doing worse than usual, and called an ambulance. Fortunately she went to the same hospital so we just went down to the ER to see her, too. Dad is better and is getting the zapping procedure tomorrow as well as m ore diagnostic stuff. He doesn't know about mom yet, but I don't think he reads HHW.

So a double dose of vibes would be much appreciated for them both!

Stan's relatives are indeed pissed at me, because Mark has not responded to their e-mails.  I don't think that anger is their best course of action.  Stan left everything to Mark to do with as he pleases.  I might suggest offering to take him out to dinner a better idea than getting mad.

Jennifer, when I was a little girl, my mother's aunt gave me a red umbrella. Now, living in Arizona, rain is usually a rare thing. So I rejoiced when it rained and I splashed and played with my red umbrella.

Might you help Stan’s family get some photos from Mark, even if they aren’t being nice about it?

Flood vibes for DR Dakota and the rest affected.

Spent the day at a paella cookoff working for a chef from New Jersey who flew in minutes before the event was to have started. He couldn't bring anything with him, such as knives, and I wasn't told to bring anything. But we made a respectable paella that centered on the garlic and olive oil, as any good version should. We added saffron, rice, scallops, lobster, shrimp, chorizo and a few other savory ingredients. We didn't win, but it was fun. The weather was perfect and the event was outdoors.

Tomorrow, it's off to buy a new computer. This one has sadly outlived its life.

Okay, we'll take Jane off the list - barely.  Got all packages addressed (I actually did them all before Cason got here) - he did the customs forms, and put postage on them, then we went to Islands and had burgers and endless fries - we slightly overdid the fries by about two baskets.  Also, as I'd mentioned several times, they'd downsized the burgers about eight months ago (but not the price) - well, they've upsized them back to where they were.

I've proofed a little more book (going through it a second time to see if I missed any bad breaks or em dashes - I've found about five so far).  I've given what will be my final set of notes on the long musical.  The only thing that needs to happen now are for the completely updated lyrics to be placed in the script.

Massive movie weekend since the computer has been on the fritz. Since Friday, I have seen "Outrage," four episodes of "Pushing Daisies," "District 9," "Bright Star," "The Hangover," "The Nanny Diaries" (another red umbrella sighting, DR Laura), and now "Public Enemies." Nothing outstanding, though, except for "Pushing Daisies."

I remember enjoying "The Running Man." Early Stephen King story released on the Richard Bachman name. And a smarmy Richard Dawson and a pre-gubernatorial Jesse Ventura.

It was raining so hard. Yet she was so happy!  It was actually really cold and windy hear today (not even sure how it was warm enough to rain). It was funny because her winter coat (which she had to put back on) is bright pink with flowers. And the umbrella is see-through with bright pink flowers. It was a perfect match (not that she'll ever wear that coat and use the umbrella again together).

Quote from: Jose last night

Sounds like it was a great concert. -Did she talk about her recent appearance at The Met in The Daughter of the Regiment - in a primarily speaking role?  -And I'm guessing her final encore was a Maori song. ??

She did very little speaking.  She talked about how beautiful the Orpheum is and how important it is to support  classical music and to introduce it to the younger generation etc... and that she loved being in the theater and our orchestra and would tell everyone to play Sioux City.  I think this is partially true.  The Orpheum truly is a gem and many performers are thrilled to play there

The last song was deifinitely a Maori song.

JRand, I sit next to the first trumpet player's girlfriend.  She said that Dame Kiri was very good to work with..I think the word she used was "generous".

Good morning!

Yes, I did my walk in the dark (street lights were on; otherwise, I couldn't have seen a thing), but it was just starting to get light as I got back to my home street. It'll take another couple of weeks to become fully light again for the walk. It was 39 degrees, but it felt good to be in the fresh air.

What time do you walk at?  When i got up (before 8am) it was already light out here.

I was out right before 7 a.m. this morning.

I spent most of my evening with the last of the Pedro Costa films COLOSSAL YOUTH. Definitely the best of the three films. This did have characters (well, one character) one could take an interest in and root for, but the movie was SO indulgent: showing us an entire series of card games instead of little bits of them, reciting a letter to one of his "sons" would couldn't read or write over and over and over (the same letter). The 2 1/2 hour movie should have been 90 minutes.

There were a couple of bonus features on the disc: a conversation between the director and a directr/friend of his was over 20 minutes long. The movie's trailer (once again prepared for the film's Far East release) was also included.

So, to just lean back and relax after I finished these LONG movies today, I put in the Blu-ray of DREAMGIRLS. I only had enough time to watch (what would be) Act I, but I certainly enjoyed revisiting it (hadn't watched it in a good while), and the transfer is still stunning even if Paramount did get a little chinzy with the audio encode (just Dolby Digital and not one of the lossless codecs the studio could have used.)

TOmorrow, I have to finish up the Costa box set with an entire disc of bonus features. The box says the supplements run 199 minutes and they include several short films made by the director as well as some bonuses about the three films in the box not aready included.

Can't honestly say I'm looking forward to them though it will be a pleasure to put this box set behind me.

It's a film about John Keats and his love for Fanny Browne (sp?). Jane Campion directed and she used her usual blue color palette, which means it was cold and frosty looking. The story was interesting, and Paul Schneider ("Assassination of Jesse James ...") was great as a man who discovered that he was in love with Keats. But overall, I'm glad I saw it on DVD.

I cut promos for it a few weeks ago when it aired on TNT. Kind of sad when the promo producer didn't even watch the film! I had never seen it so I skimmed through and picked out the good stuff. After being assured that we would be able to use the music from the film, well...

We watched a really horrible movie last night called THE SINS OF RACHEL. We had gotten a copy of THE EROTIC ADVENTURES OF ZORRO starring Douglas Frey, and given it to our friend, Douglas Frey (no relation), which gave us fodder for a running joke about his former career as an adult film star. They show this video to their friends, in the case, which they've never even unwrapped. They are afraid to watch it! (It's one of those cheesy 70's movie from Something Weird.)

When we were at Ben's, I mentioned that I'd bought this DVD, and somehow another film title was brought up: THE SINS OF RACHEL. Since Douglas' wife is named Rachel, well of course we had to get that one, too. Greg decided we should open it and watch it. I slept through most of it, but boy, it was bad from what I saw. But now they don't have to be embarrassed to open it since we already did!
