Title: THE FINISH LINE
Post by: bk on March 24, 2010, 12:24:07 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes crossed the finish line, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently in Finland and hopefully crossing the Finnish line.

Good morning, all! I slept fitfully last night, and it had nothing to do with my neighbor. For some reason, I tossed all night, got up several times, and had very peculiar dreams, the last one involving me and other friends I cannot recall now going to see a movie and getting separated. There was somethng involving driving directions, but it's too blurry now.

This morning I am back to the McGlinnventory, which is moving from Tuesdays and Thursdays to Wednesdays and Thursdays. Following that, I believe I will make a stop at Toyland and the pharmacy for more meds before heading back uptown. I think that's my day.

Our wonderful paralegal, who's supervising the McGlinnventory, just called and she's feeling under the weather today, so I'm not going downtown. I guess it will be a day at NYPL.

I tossed and turned all night too, basically dream-sleeping the whole night.  This seems to have been happening every Tuesday night after watching LOST.  I think I am overthinking about the show...

One funny thing that entered one of my many dreams last night--the jingle from an old Wheaties commercial that had the lyric "You didn't eat your Wheaties."  Now that I'm awake (kind of), I can hear the melody of the jingle but I can't recall all of the lyrics.  Now that's going to be playing in me head all day...

I don't ever want to see evil and guilty people go free.  but in a very controversial case in the news which I shall not name because it's a highly volatile case, it seems they've frozen the accused's assets so that there will be money to compensate the victims, assuming he's found guilty.

But since the assets are frozen, he had to let his lawyer go since he can't afford his lawyer.

If this stands up, what's to stop the government/prosecution from using this reason (that the money is needed to compensate the victims) to freeze any defendant's funds, and as a result keep that defendant from getting a vigorous defense?

This is fine with me since I have selected my films that I'll watch for sure today: THE SINGING KID with Al Jolson (which I've never seen) and THE GREAT MUPPET CAPER (which I have seen but not in 15 or 20 years).

Even though I can't see it, the World FIgure Skating CHampionships should be interesting on the men's side.

Since Evan Lysechek, Plushenko, Johnny Weir, and Stephane Lambiel are not competing (that's four of the top six skaters from the Olympics), the competition is wide open. One article I read on-line this morning predicted a Japanese sweep of the podium since their three Olympic skaters are all at Worlds. But I think that's short-sighted to ignore Patrick Chan (who finished 2nd last year), Jeremy Abbott (who should have a rebound from his poor Olympic performance), and Brian Joubert who's won it before and is always a threat if he's on the mark.

On the ladies' side, all of the top skaters from the Olympics excewpt Joannie Rochette are competing, so those results won't likely change too much. But I hope Rachael Flatt gets some payback for those mysterious downgrades she alone received at the Olympics for her triple flips. (I have played them over 50 times and can't see a problem with them at all.)

I have errrands to run, so i'm heading out for a couple of hours. I just edited "Niccolo's Piccolo" from the 1902 WIZARD OF OZ, which features such unfamiliar characters as Sir Dashemoff Daily, Pastoria the real ruler of Oz and his girlfriend Tryxie Tryfle, and the madwoman Cynthia Cynch whose song "Niccolo's Piccolo" is about her missing fiance, Nick Chopper, who of course turns out to be the Tin Woodman. The only thing the MGM film took from the 1902 musical was the snowfall to kill the poppies, although Ray Bolger acknowledged his debt to Fred Stone the original Scarecrow.

Hi everyone!

Congrats to BK on finishing the book - that's great!

I've been busy on various projects lately.

The MAC Awards are coming along quite well.  We're having a press conference at Barnes and Noble at Lincoln Center tomorrow afternoon to announce the nominees.  Things have been busy leading up to this - I've been drafting press releases and working on some publicity things.

I also have a producer's meeting on the CLEAR BLUE TUESDAY film later today.  We've been accepted into some film festivals, so we're all very excited about that.

Otherwise, I spent this past weekend in Boston atending my niece's bat mitzvah.  She was perfect (not that I'm biased!!).  She performed the entire nearly 2 1/2 hour service mostly by herself, and much of it in Hebrew.  I was so proud of her.  And her party afterwards rocked!

I hope everyone here is doing well.  I gonna try to catch up on some posts later today and see what everyone's been up to.

A good day to all!

I am home today.  I got up in the night to use the bathroom, and Nicky was in the way.  I wish he could figure out that I can't see in the dark even if he can see.  I stepped wide to avoid him and got tangled in my own feet.  I thought I was okay then, but when I woke up this morning i could barely get out of bed.  I called into work, took a pain pill, and went back to bed for a few hours.  Now I am walking around very gingerly (Rogers), and I need to go soak in the tub.

I am becoming a menace to my own health.

I did want to check in on the latest to the Jewish / Baseball debate.

DR TCB I'm so sorry you are hurting.

BIG TIP HERE:  I use a flashlight at night when I get up so I don't trip over Sherlock, or his toys.  All you need is a little, easy to hold, flashlight so you can see in the dark.

I think the debate is over-just waiting for the results now :)

Soak in a tub of epsom salts. And put a nightlight in your bathroom or wherever it was you got tangled. My dad, around 10 years ago, fell over one of his dogs in the garage and nearly put his eye out in the fall. That was when I really started to worry about him living alone.

Question for Ask BK Day...

Which cereal would you like to do a commercial for?  (pardon my dangling participle)

Y

Sugar Pops.  Do they still make that?
Yes but they are now called Corn Pops. Sugar Frosted Flakes is now Frosted Flakes and Sugar Smacks I believe is Honey Smacks

I even use the flashlight as I walk into our bathroom, which does have a nightlight.  You can see more of the surrounding ground as you move with the flashlight.  JUST REMEMBER TO USE IT EVEN IF YOU THINK YOU DON'T NEED IT!!!

On some of your cast/concept albums you have Sound EFX of people dancing and was wondering why the choice of doing this instead of it just being "clean" (music/vocal only)

By dancing, I presume you mean tap dancing, yes?  The choice is simple and we've had as much tap dancing as I could use (usually done by the great Niki Harris) - I like the sound of it, it's theatrical, and it's grand fun.

I always enjoyed the tapping!

I'm not sure how i felt about it.  First off i am not sure that richard can carry a whole episode by himself. The flashback stuff was mostly really long. I did like the current stuff, especially with hurley.  There were definitely some interesting parts.  But I"m not sure i like them ignoring most of the cast. I'd rather see more people, and more island stuff.

Be careful, TCB!  I have done exactly the same thing with BeeGee, who is completely impossible to see at night, and we even DO have a nightlight in both the bedroom and the bathroom.  Typically BeeGee lies right up next to the bed on Betsy's side, so I know what to expect, but every so often he stretches out sideways and I have had some very close calls in terms of falling over.  The worst part is hearing him snicker a little under his breath.  ;)

I watched AMERICAN IDOL before I started cooking lunch. There are really only three really high class PERFORMERS: Crystal, Michael, and Casey. Aaron has a good voice and if he were only a few years older, I think he could have been a real threat. The last girl who shrieks at the ends of her songs has decent ability, but those notes aren't always on pitch.

But there are at least five HOPELESS performers, and the sooner they're eliminated, the better.

I know exactly how I felt about it.  I thought it was flat-out brilliant.  I don't have any indecision on Richard's ability to carry a whole episode by himself.  He can, he did and it was awesome.

Richard is a most crucial element in the story arc.  About him we have had NOTHING ever...until last night.  I know all I need to know about the regulars (although I'm immensely enjoying the flash sideways stories), and I've waited long enough to learn about Jacob, the Man in Black and Richard.

Then I watched THE GREAT MUPPET CAPER. This is an ancient transfer, so it looks really dated and bad in places though some shots looked very nice.

But this was, despite a more lavish production, a real step down from THE MUPPET MOVIE. Charles Grodin's crush on Miss Piggy is kind of cute.

While walking down the street one day a US senator is tragically hit by a truck and dies. His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance.

"Welcome to heaven," says St. Peter. "Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we're not sure what to do with you."

"No problem, just let me in," says the man. "Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we'll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity."

"Really, I've made up my mind. I want to be in heaven," says the senator.

"I’m sorry, but we have our rules."

And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course.  In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him.  Everyone is very happy and in evening dress.  They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the people.  They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and champagne.

Also present is the Devil, who really is a very friendly & nice guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes.  They are having such a good time that before he realizes it, it is time to go.  Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator raises.

The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens on heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him.  "Now it's time to visit heaven."

So, 24 hours pass with the senator joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing.  They have a good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns.

"Well, then, you've spent a day in hell and another in heaven.  Now choose your eternity."

The senator reflects for a minute, then he answers: "Well, I would never have said it before.   I mean, heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell."

So, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. Now the doors of the elevator open and he's in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage.  He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in bags as more trash falls from above.

The Devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder.

"I don't understand," stammers the senator.  "Yesterday, I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had a great time.  Now there's just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable.  What happened?"

The Devil looks at him, smiles and says, "Yesterday we were campaigning.  Today you voted."

MR BK will you be arranging a book signing if you come to Indiana - and will you alert the theatre that you are coming, or will you surprise them.

Obviously the first part of the question has a bearing on the second.

Or, what about a talk-back with the composer after the show(s) that you attend??

If it's for your production, always happy to do it.

SPEEDY PAIN FREE VIBES!!!

I think the debate is going to continue in my world. We all like the original: J & B, AND AMERICAN LOVE STORY, except the producer who is sold on Jews on First: Playing America's Game. Even though I like it, I think it's a dated reference that most people won't get...I'd be more pro if the routine was in our film...so we'll see...

I just looked up the box-office on Valentine's Day.  Who on Earth do they think they're kidding - disastrous reviews and yet somehow this tripe did 56 mil its opening weekend?  And no one questions this?  It beat every other film?  I don't think so, and if I were a Warner Bros. shareholder who ultimately gets a report about how the film didn't actually bring in any profit to the studio, I would be not so happy.

What was the classic film Druxy and others were recommending a few weeks ago--some heartbreaking thing (with Marie Dressler, maybe?) on Warner Archive.  They're having a sale and I thought I'd pick it up, but now I can't remember what it was.

I may have recommended something, but I don't believe it was a Dresser film.

DR EDISAURUS's story about her documentary reminded me of a story in one of Phillip Roth's novels....about the Indianapolis Clowns....a minor league baseball team in the 1920's.

One of their outfielders had lost an arm in WW I.  When he fielded a ball, he would jam it into his mouth, shake off his glove, and then throw the ball back into play.  He was always afraid that he would lose the ball, so sometimes, he pushed it in so hard, he couldn't get it out, and his team mates would have to throw him on the ground and pry the ball out of his mouth.

At the end of the season, the coach was looking at the stats and told the team.  "We didn't lose those games because of our lousy pitching or our lousing batting.  It was those inside the mouth grand slam home runs that killed us."

I think that is a valid point. What age is the target of the movie. And what age would not get the reference.

I know the reference. And i'm guessing anyone older than me would know it.  But ask some 20 somethings. I'd be curious how many would get the joke.  Although i guess if they don't they can just think it mean first base.

When I went down, I watched THE SINGING KID. "Kid" is a decidedly operative term since Jolson must have been 50 when he made this. This is the film that introduced that song that later became a cartoon standard "I Want to Singa." Not a bad film until the preposterous climax. And Cab Calloway has some fine moments in some musical numbers.

Very obvious Al was on the downside of his movie career, though, since he wasn't billed above the title. That was also a big surprise.

Amazon had reduced the price to $23 this morning, but that's still more than I'll pay for it, wonderful as it is. When they're selling the Blu-ray of OUT OF AFRICA for $17.99, I think it's reasonable for THE AFRICAN QUEEN to be priced similarly.

They used to do it in drug cases.  They also would seize the money paid to the attorney as drug proceeds

Is this the first legal action against someone for not tweeting fast enough?  Unless i'm misreading this, it looks like that's what it comes down to.

Bieber manager pleads not guilty in NY mall frenzy

By MEGAN K. SCOTT (AP) – 47 minutes ago

NEW YORK — The manager for teen pop sensation Justin Bieber surrendered to police Wednesday in connection with a fan frenzy last year at a mall that sent five people to a hospital with minor injuries.
Scott "Scooter" Braun pleaded not guilty to charges of reckless endangerment, criminal nuisance and endangering the welfare of a child.
His arrest stemmed from a planned appearance in November by the 16-year-old Bieber at Roosevelt Field Mall in Long Island. Authorities claim Braun didn't send out a tweet fast enough to let the raucous crowd of 3,000 know Bieber wouldn't be making an appearance.
Nassau County police canceled the event when the crowd became unruly. But some fans refused to leave, crowding the narrow area outside the clothing store where Bieber was scheduled to sign autographs. Five people were taken to hospitals with minor injuries.
"People started screaming, 'Justin!' And they ran forward and the ropes collapsed," said 13-year-old Aimee Macchi, who was knocked to the floor in the rush.
According to a release from the district attorney, police efforts were hindered by a message from Bieber's Twitter account to fans stating: "On my way to Roosevelt Field Mall in Long Island, NY to sign and meet fans! I'm pumped. See u there."
The release said police asked James Roppo, a senior vice president of Island Def Jam Records, Bieber's record label, to send out a tweet telling fans that the event was canceled. Island Def Jam employees also contacted Braun to send out the tweet. An hour later, no tweet was sent and the crowd remained.
Roppo was arrested for not cooperating with attempts to break up the crowd. He was charged with a series of misdemeanors, including endangering the welfare of children and obstructing governmental administration. His case is pending.
When police called Braun, he told them he "was in a meeting in Manhattan without access to a computer," according to the district attorney. When told that he would be arrested, he asked police to make sure they spelled his name right on the warrant, the release said.
Braun sent two tweets 1 1/2 hours later about three minutes apart, once Roppo called him after being placed under arrest, according to the district attorney. The crowd dispersed within 15 minutes. Bieber never made it inside the mall.
Braun's lawyer, Ravi Batra, said his client responded promptly to the police request, finding a computer and sending the tweets in seven minutes. He is hoping the district attorney reopens the investigation.
The 28-year-old Braun faces up to a year in jail if convicted.
Bieber caught the attention of the music industry after he began posting videos of himself singing on YouTube. His album "My World 2.0," with the hit song "Baby," was released Tuesday.
On Wednesday, Bieber took the fight for Braun to Twitter.
"You've got my total support," Bieber tweeted to Braun. "Wish you were here in Chicago with us."
Bieber was spotted flashing a T-shirt with the words "Free Scooter" imprinted on it Wednesday as he was met by a group of screaming fans in Chicago.
A spokesman for the DA's office said the timing of the manager's arrest with the album release was a coincidence.

Then I went to a performance of "A Seasonal Journey with 2nd Grade" which was presented by "Ms. Wilson-Morgan and Mrs. Burke's 2nd Grade Music Classes" at King's Park Elementary School.  My niece, Alyssa, was a part of the "Winter" presentation.  :)

*And, I have to say, I was quite impressed.  They recited poetry. They played instruments. They danced. And they sang... in three languages: English, Spanish and Japanese(!) -For "Sakura".  Needless to say, I was a very proud uncle, and it turned out that the grandparents drove up from Richmond for the presentation too - and then drove right back down I-95 right afterwards.  But it was nice getting to see my parents if even just for a few minutes.

Sounds very impressive!! And I am sure that the evening was made more special for Alyssa by having her Uncle Jojo there

DR TCB - Have you considered glow tape arrows on the floor?  -Carol Channing used those during her last Hello, Dolly! tour.  ;)

Then after the seasonal musical spectacular, I headed back into DC to meet up (again) with former DR Jason for dinner.  This time, we dined at a place that both of us love, Matchbox (http://matchbox369.com/). Mini-burgers and Pizza! Again... Yummy!

*And then afterwards, we headed back over to Good Stuff Eatery (http://www.goodstuffeatery.com) for dessert in the form of a Milky Way Malted Shake for Jason, and a Toasted Marshmallow Shake for myself.  Double-Yummy!

You're welcome.  And now that you've gotten the Carnegie Deli out of your system... ;)  -But it is good to go there at least once if you have the chance.

DR Cillaliz - Most people who come into DC for the July 4th festivities are from the D.C. suburbs.  So, most of the traffic that occurs that weekend is on the roads, not in the airports.  -And on the 4th itself, not the 3rd. And since the 3rd falls on a Saturday this year, you won't have to worry about rush hour traffic either that day.

Thanks DR Jose.  That helps.  I was there until the second of july once and it was crowded but no problem leaving.   Hmmmm

OH!  You're at the new National Harbor (http://www.nationalharbor.com/) (MD) Complex!  Very nice.  -They have boats that sail between there and Old Town Alexandria, VA.  And from what I hear, there are some decent restaurants out there too.

As for last night's "Lost"....

I loved it.  It did take me a few minutes to get into it (all that reading ;) ), but then... :)

DR Jennifer - Don't analyze it while you watch it.  Just watch it.  Then think about it.  Then analyze it if you still want to.

Yeah, it looks pretty cool.  I had decided not to go, but I'm changing my mind.  I really did enjoy my trip to Vegas last year and this is the same group.  If I decide by Saturday, I get discounts for early booking etc.  I'm thinking I'll do it.

Tonight, I saw a local production of Rent...and it was great!  The sound wasn't, though.  The band was just a bit too loud for the voices to be understood, especially at the beginning of the show, but after a while, either it got better or I got used to it.  They got and deserved an instant standing o at the end of the show. :D
