Title: ELIJAH THE NO-SHOW
Post by: bk on March 30, 2010, 12:14:31 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you know all about Elijah (and Eve), and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home.  They're currently waiting for Elijah (or Godot).

Last night's rehearsal for The Brain went well.  We ran through most of the act 1 songs and reblocked a moment in the opening number (a potential train wreck was averted).  We didn't have the Brain (which Josh just found out about on Friday ::)) or Yoni and a couple of chorus folk, but we got through what we needed to.  I (and the chorus) don't need to be at rehearsal tonight, and since there are no rehearsals on Wednesdays, I won't have rehearsal again until Thursday.

Last night (Monday), this afternoon and tonight, the national tour of CATS (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/season/season_detail.asp?event_id=1112) will be at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/).  I'm taking the day off from work to usher for the matinee performance!  I've never seen the show live, and I finally will...and I get to see the inflatable set!  I signed up for the matinee, expecting to have rehearsal this evening, but we didn't find out until Sunday that the chorus would not be needed tonight. :P If I had known this, I wouldn't have taken the day off, but oh, well.  It's only vacation time. :)

I'm 69 years old.  How am I supposed to remember my first hamburger?

 :P

I do recall a place in Seattle called, I believe, Burgermaster.  It was a drive-in, and they made the greatest hamburgers in the world.  They were also the messiest.

When it comes to hambugers, messy is good.

Speaking of journals, I'm just about finished THE RED LEATHER DIARY by Lily Koppel.  I had started it about a year ago but misplaced it on a weekend trip (it was just returned to me.)  What a wonderful book!  I've always had a strong affinity for the early 30's, especially involving Manhattan and its environs--I really do think I lived there in my previous life.  I think a couple of peeps here have also read this book.  I recommend it highly.

Good morning, all! The alarm went off at 7:15 but I lazed about listening to the rain until 8:15. There was quite a heavy downpour around 5 this morning and I expect the day will be a very wet one.

Today I have to be out in the rain: first a trek to Toyland, followed by a meeting at Rodgers & Hammerstein, which is only a block away from Toyland. After that, I guess I will wander back here to uncover whatever fresh hell awaits me.

I have no memory of food. Books, movies, concerts, shows, that I remember!

I kept forgetting to comment yesterday about the motion picture that BK watched the evening before--PICASSO SUMMER.  I had forgotten that I had ever seen it until BK mentioned the animated sequences and I suddenly recalled watching it with my younger cousin on TV.  We were fascinated and entertained by seeing cartoon boobies.

I am sure the first hamburger I had was at home.

The first restaurant hamburger I had was at a little restaurant in downtown Mooresville, where we got to sit on a swivel stool that was attached to the floor.  My feet didn't touch the floor, and I was more interested in the seating arrangements than the hamburger....but it had dill pickles slices on it...and I loved the flavors together.

Of course we had the White Castle hamburgers which I still eat from time to time when I am not on a diet.

But my favorite right now - if I was in the market for same - would be the BK Double Broiler.

Good morning!

My walk was pure pleasure this morning. It was 45 which is perfect walking weather with a sweatshirt and sweatpants on, and the time passed in a flash. By the end of the week, I should be able to take off the sweatshirt and substitute a t-shirt instead. It's also supposed to be gorgeous all week long. Looks like I'll be doing some porch sitting while I cook lunch this week.

Couple takes a plural verb, acccording to the Associated Press stylebook. So, it would be "the couple are ..." Sounds awkward, but that's the rule I learned.

re: DANCING WITH THE STARS last night

There were only a few couples that impressed me.

I thought Nicole and derek were sensational. I know she has a bit of a dance background. But it's not just that. I think derek is one of the best choreographers. And to me that makes a huge difference. She is my definite favorite.

Even though i don't care for anna usually i thought her and evan were really good.

And even though i thought shannen was not too good last week. The jive suited her. And mark is a great choreographer.

I also thought that pamela anderson was interesting. I have no idea if she was dancing the steps correctly. But she totally imbodied marilyn monroe and she was really enjoyable to watch.

There were a bunch that were painful to watch.  I know the judges praised erin. But to me she is stiff. But painful was chad. Last week i thought he had so much rhythm.

Buzz was also not too good. Although he was much better than last week.

But by far the most painful to watch was kate gosselin. I have to say that was one of the worst things i've seen. IT was really bad.

Tuesday morning greetings!  It's a beautiful day here in SW Ohio, the first of several predicted right through Easter Sunday.  We're off to Cincinnati this afternoon to pick up the ham for tomorrow's "Green Eggs and Ham" dinner.  I made the first batch of green (Jello) eggs this morning and will do another this evening.  At some point, we should hear from my sister, who's arriving today from Michigan.  There may be a get-together of some sort this evening at Otterbein (the retirement community) which is on our way home from Cincinnati.

I do know that the visiting contingent from Japan wants to go shopping today (well, my cousin's wife wants to go shopping).  They caught a glimpse of the brand new outlet mall on their way in yesterday - it's right down the road from Otterbein, so my aunt won't have to worry too much about them getting lost (but she will anyway  ::))

We didn't eat out a lot when I was growing up, and we certainly didn't eat at fast food places, so my first hamburger likely was at home. (I didn't keep a burger journal.) But we didn't eat them too often. Maybe that's why I'm such a hamburger addict now. Nothing like a good juicy burger (made with a 70:30 meat-to-fat ratio) and grilled over an open flame.

Toppings are important, too. I love what is called a dirty burger with a fried egg on top so the yolk breaks open and flavors the burger. Then there's the local favorite, the bean burger, with refried beans, Frito's and melted cheese. This past weekend, I came across a burger topped with foie gras that certainly sounded tempting, but I somehow passed on it.

My perfect burger will probably always be the next one to come.

When I read he was leaving, I immediately crossed the show off my must-see list. Nothing against Jeff GOldblum, but the show started with him and Erbe, and it isn't the same show without them. I was even willing to go along with them halving the season with him and (first) Chris Noth and then Goldblum, but for them not to be on the show at all, no thanks.

One of the best brugers of my past was at a Lexington, Ky., landmark called Columbia's Steak House. It was always affordable during college days (early '80s). It was a half-pound burger, cooked a perfect medium, and came with steak fries. Plenty of A-1 and it would hold me through the week. Yum.

I'm sure my first hamburger was at home, but I have no real memory of it. My mother made delicious hamburgers, either grilled outside (my father supervised those) or pan-fried.

TOD - I just made burgers for our "Welcome Home, Rob!" dinner last night.  We use Laura's Lean ground round and grill them on our George Foreman grill.

My favorite fast food burger is Culver's Butter Burger, especially when followed by a small caramel cashew sundae made with their vanilla frozen custard.  Also, in Lima, there's a famous burger place called Kewpie that Richard likes because he can get a burger with his favorite topping - chopped green olives.

As for the Topic of the Day...

I'm guessing my first hamburger was probably from McDonald's or Roy Rogers.  Or it could have been cooked on the grill in the backyard of our house on Walter Reed Drive in Arlington, VA.

Like DR John G, I also like a fried egg on my burger from time to time, but usually with a slice of pickled beet on it too - it's a very Australian thing. Otherwise: bacon, bleu cheese, caramelized onions, sauteed mushrooms, bread & butter pickles, swiss cheese, etc., etc., etc....

I'm trying to think of my current favorite burger in New York City, but no particular burger/restaurant is coming to mind.  However, I can't really think of a burger I really don't like in New York City.

Speaking of Gerald Mohr, a fine working actor, I just saw him in an episode of a really terrible tv series from 1961/62 called KING OF DIAMONDS. The show starred Brod. Crawford and a one (non) hit wonder named Jay Hamilton whose career began in 1961 and ended in 1962. I am pretty certain Jay was one of Henry Willson's clients.

Broderick Crawford.

He was a very nice, very gentle man.

So unlike his screen image.

...and, most importantly, ( ;D) he was Frances Farmer's love interest in BADLANDS OF DAKOTA.  In fact one of the lines that got the biggest laugh in our read-through of my Farmer-Garland musical STARCROSSED was Frances saying that playing a love scene with Crawford was what led to her drinking problem.  :)

DR Dan - my book group read The Red Leather Diary last year and loved it!

I probably picked it up in the first place on either your or DR Elmore's raving about it then...

Which Jerry Lewis movie contained a scene of him undressing (having been disguised as a woman) and removing a brassier that contained two large oranges?

We have our own annual joke, which no one else gets.  When Gabe was very young, he loved the film THE BORROWERS, and there's a line early in the film when the father and son get home and start to walk in their tiny little house, and the mother comes out, points at the rug and shouts, "CARPET!" (i.e., don't get it dirty).  So every year when the Haggadah is explaining the various accoutrements and we get to Karpas, we all scream "KARPAS!" like the mom in THE BORROWERS.   We typically get looks of confusion, and in fact did last night.  :)

It features Anna Wintour (Vogue). But it also stars someone who I had never seen on screen before, Grace Coddington (creative director of Vogue). I love her!  Very good movie. I really enjoyed it.

As I ate lunch, I watched last night's CASTLE. It was an excellent conclusion of the two part show (for some reason, I thought the killer was going to end up with ties to Martha), but there were a couple of places where dramatic license taken made me roll my eyes.

Still, it's a fun, fun show, and the previews for next week make the show look equally entertaining.

Next I watched another episode of THE CLOSER from the season four set. This was the one with the male "illusionist" who defied the officers from being able to trap him. Very clever the way Brenda and Fritz (mostly Fritz this time) arrived at a solution to the mystery. This was one of my favorite episodes from the season.

I also skimmed today's ONE LIFE TO LIVE. Kyle and Oliver were on, but their scenes were seconds long. Oliver had a very important scene late in the show without Kyle. At least now things are going to proceed full speed ahead with the baby plot before the boys ride off into the sunset.

Just saw last night's ratings. CASTLE once again achieved its highest ever rating last night and led all programs at 10 p.m. It was helped along by a very strong DANCING WITH THE  STARS lead-in, but it's obvious the show is growing in popularity since it didn't get these kinds of ratings last year even it followed this same show.

As a result, ABC has renewed CASTLE for next season, a full 22-episode season order! Hooray!

Went out for soul food today at a wonderful restaurant with the best fried chicken, stewed okra, cabbage and greens. Some blackberry cobbler with plenty of butter made me very happy. But on the way back home, I got to thinking of another burger place here in town called the Lord's Kitchen. It's kind of hidden by the railyard, but it has a 1.5-pound Get Down Burger and a 3-pounder that's for dainty eaters like myself (though I have never ordered it).

There's also a place in town called Chunky's that serves a 4-Horseman Burger with four types of peppers on it, including that Indian ghost pepper, which is so hot the Indian government is thinking of making a weapon out of it.

Yum!  Richard and I are going to have to visit Kewpie some time.

DR Dan - my book group read The Red Leather Diary last year and loved it!

How many pages is it?  I'm looking for small, as in lightweight, books to check out from the library.

Ahhhhhhhhhh....THREE ON A COUCH.  I don't think I ever saw that movie.

I try to avoid all of Jerry Lewis' movies.

 ;D

Me, too. As much as I like to help folks when one of these cinema questions comes up, if it's Jerry Lewis oriented, I can be of NO help. I stopped watching him when he and Dean went their separate ways. I did see HARDLY WORKING because I had to review it, but all of those hits he churned out in the late 1950s and 1960s, I never saw a single one of them and never wanted to.

What about KING OF COMEDY, which is very different from anything else he did.

Having actually seen most of Jerry's output, I'll stick up for him.  Several of his solo films are hilarious and wonderfully done.

I think he was wonderful in THE NUTTY PROFESSOR!!

I skipped my morning workout to clean & am now exhausted.  I even managed to put clean sheets on the bed all by myself, another new accomplishment :)  Keith was busy cleaning the floors & other work so I was motivated not to interrupt him.

We were snowed in this morning & had to cancel an important visit with the dermatologist.  I'm still waiting for a call back to see when we can go.  I already canceled an appointment following my surgery & am very upset to have missed this one.  Darn, if the snow didn't melt just as we would have left.  Odd too, the snow was still falling but the ground was so warm it kept melting.

Jerry Lewis was wonderful in "King of Comedy," not a typical Jerry Lewis movie. Also liked DeNiro, Sandra Bernhard, Shelley Hack and Dianne Abbott as well as the soundtrack.

That's one l like, but as you say, it's not really a Jerry Lewis movie.

She would make balls of cream of wheat and float them in the soup. They were similar in texture to the matzo balls. Plus the broth was chicken.

There's a folk song about an unhappy unwanted pregnancy: "Once I Wore My apron Low." I don't think it's quite right.

I can't remember my first hamburger, probably because my mother made delicious hamburgers at home.  The only ones I liked as much were at Stats.

My mother made a wonderful hamburger Hors d'œuvre for parties.  She would cut up small squares or circles of good Jewish Rye bread, place a small patty on the bread & then top with a little cheese & melt it in the broiler.

I saw a very interesting movie if you are at all interested in fashion. The documentary THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE.  It was so well done it did not really remind me of a documentary at all. It features Anna Wintour (Vogue). But it also stars someone who I had never seen on screen before, Grace Coddington (creative director of Vogue). I love her!  Very good movie. I really enjoyed it.

DR Jennifer - I believe DR elmore saw this film/documentary when it originally came out and raved about it.

Jerry's film GEISHA BOY is very touching and is one of my all time favorite movies.

It has been so many years since I have seen any of the other Jerry Lewis solo movies, that I couldn't tell you if they were enjoyable (to me) or not.

I really like "Geisha Boy" too.  Anytime it would come on Channel 20 in DC, I would end up watching it.

Next I watched last night's DAMAGES. There are only three episodes left now in the season, the show's best. I have to say this season now has three sets of parents being really horrible and dishonest with their kids, all to amazing effect.

I need to watch last night's "Damages" again.  There was soooo much information presented last night, and I want to make sure I picked up all of the "loose ends".  But, yes, a GREAT season!

Richard and I left about 2pm and went to 2 bank locations for him to find a working ATM, JCPenney, the Honey Baked Ham Store, Kenwood Towne Center, the new West Chester Library, my Mom's apartment, and Donato's Pizza.  Came home and ate pizza with Rob and watched NCIS.

At Penney's we were looking for bed sheets that are not in sets.  We have a queen-size bed, but like king-sized top sheets and JCP no longer carries anything but sets.  At Kenwood, I happened into Pottery Barn and the clerk did not look at me like I had two heads; she even said they had what I wanted and that a lot of people look for individual sheets.

At my mom's, we visited with her and my sister & brother-in-law, but we missed my cousin and his family.  They were still out shopping and my aunt was about to call the authorities to report them missing.  She called right before we left to report that they were "home."

Now I have to make another batch of green (Jello) eggs.

Since there isn't a wait I requested The Red Leather Diary from my library, along with two other books I know to be a doable weight.  When I checked my request list it said another book had been shipped.  After my surgery I had suspended this book, meaning I held the request so that when I reactivated the book I would go back into the queue where I left off.  There are steps to do to suspend & reactivate, you can't accidentally hit a button.  Yesterday this book still showed "suspended".

Well, it wasn't a Jerry Lewis film, and that's the point. He was a hired actor and he was VERY effective. He was operating under someone else's script and direction, and it showed in an impressive performance.

Then I took out a movie on Blu-ray sitting here for months and months: TERMINATOR: SALVATION. Big and loud but with some good suspense in typical TERMINATOR fashion (lots of machine-stalking-humans stuff).

For me, the first one is still the best one because it was a tight, terrific thriller. All of the others have been SO bloated. The first one was made on a very tight budget and was the better for it.

CI was great tonight, in what looks to be D'Onofrio and Erbe's final episodes (it's a two parter, concluding next week).  This was one of the most convoluted plots ever, harkening back to the early days of CI.  One surprising plot development, which I won't spoil, though those of you who keep up on backstage comings and goings may be able to guess it.

Hooray!
