Good morning, all! I have some work here and then a trek to Toyland for a couple of hours. Folllowing that I have two rehearsals with a couple of singers for the Victor Herbert recordings in the fall. Knowing that I would be busy most of the day, I did my laundry, vacuumed the apartment and mopped the floors yesterday afternoon.
This morning, I've got some Montgomery & Stone work before heading to Toyland. Excelsior!

I rarely go to the actual author's site, as i prefer and find it easier to just go to amazon.com. They have synopsis, lists of books and you can also read comments from real people who have read the book. Do you ever go there?

Tonight is our last group rehearsal.
I wish we weren't doing this dumb THRILLER dance - it takes us right out of what we're doing and is more about the choreographer than us - who knows WHAT the audience reaction will be....it's NOT what they came to see.
oh well.....what a waste of time. At least I am in the last group - so I don't have to worry about being pressed for time to make the costume change.

I forgot to mention yesterday that I had one of my rehearsal dreams again on Sunday night. Again, I was back at what I initially thought was a college theatre department reunion and everyone one is running around backstage of the theatre excitedly and I have a costume shoved at me and it gradually dawns on me that we are about to do a performance of THE TAMING OF THE SHREW. And despite my protests that not only do I not remember my lines but I'm not even sure what role I'm expected to play, the stage manager whisper/screams "Places!" and opening music begins to play. I spot a copy of the script on a prop table right before I am to make my entrance but it's too late--I'm on. I walk on stage desperately trying to recall my first line but nothing comes to mind. And then I woke up.
Yes, it was a typical anxiety dream. But I had a very nice costume--it was dark grey brocaded wool. It fit very nicely and I looked very dashing even though I thought it was more apt for a history play than a comedy.

Good morning!
A tiny bit warmer this morning (58), but my walk felt good and went by very quickly. I didn't get as much sleep as I would have liked. I got caught up rereading the wonderful behind-the-scenes book on figure skating CUTTING EDGE and the time just got away from me.

I have a serious addiction to rice and have it at least twice a week in some way or other. The best rice dish? I couldn't possibly say since I like it just about any way it can be fixed or seasoned (or not. I LOVE plain white rice with a dab of butter and some pepper on it.)

I'm still debating about recording IDOL tonight. I'm just not really into the singers and don't really care who wins, so I'm on the fence about continuing with this season.
CBS has an all-new line-up tonight of both NCIS shows and THE GOOD WIFE.
LOST, of course, continues with its last season (Desmond is the focus tonight, I believe).

I do have NURSE JACKIE and CASTLE and DAMAGES on the DVR from last night, so I have plenty to watch before I start my work project for the day.

It was a fine game last night - I watched a lot of the second half.
Duke won, of course - but Butler didn't lose. They played a fine game up until the last seconds....and that last court shot and or rebound would have told a different tale....as would have that last desperation shot from half court - that WOULD have been a miracle.

Duke was given a big build-up as the overwhelming favorite and was a #1 seed, but this had not been a stellar year for the Blue Devils, and I wouldn't have been at all surprised if they had lost.

The furious storm yesterday knocked out our internet for hours, and then our power itself for hours as well. There are trees, branches and leaves down all over the place. We were at the new house yesterday when the wind started and it was actually pretty scary. The new house is surrounded by very tall firs, and they were bending and swaying pretty badly. I think I'll have the closest ones removed post haste.

What with Easter and Passover and everything else, I am seriously behind on this month's reviews, so I will be watching/writing a lot this week. I'm working on John Woo's THE KILLER right now. So far both of these Dragon Dynasty Blu's have had appallingly bad transfers (1080i, which makes no sense to me).

Of course i agree. I loved him and thought he was in a class of his own even last year. And he totally should have won. Although that said, he obviously had a lot of stage training and was a seasoned performer before he ever came on IDOL. Most of the ones this year do not seem to have the same training or experience.

Oy, the "Customer Service Agent" at DPS was from far off Winnebago or some such place, had a horribly thick accent, and could not find the license for LOVE LETTERS I received yesterday which I was attempting to pay for. But I did get through several selections of BAT BOY. :)

I'll enjoy the comparative lack of time crunch once April 15 hits, but I'm thinking I will miss the steady flow of work. There seems to be no period of middle ground.
Being able to be back here regularly is one of the things I'm really looking forward to.

I always loved Rice A Roni (The San Francisco Treat), but I am sure it is quite deadly, so I no longer indulge. Otherwise, rice is something I can take or leave unless it is filled with cheesy stuff.
As a kid, rice with milk, sugar, and cinnamon was a big treat.

I will be buying LSOH cd, but will probably await the next release so that I can order two CDs at a time. I am very poor right now and figure I can save on postage that way.

I'd pull for Duke no matter who the team played, but I have to admit I wanted Butler to win. And it was SO CLOSE! I like underdogs, especially underdogs who have the talent and the dream to succeed against all odds.
I think Butler earned a LOT of national respect last night.

TOD: I've never gotten to the bottom of exactly what the ingredients were, but I ate a rice dish (locally, even!) that was yellow, had several spices in it, and was absolutely scrumptious, especially served with the blackened catfish I ordered.
I'm guessing that cumin was one of the spices, but there were other complementary spices that gave it a taste all its own.
(Fair Warning: Anyone who cracks wise about the "named" spice above will get a piece of my mind. And since my mind is a jigsaw puzzle of irregular pieces, I won't be responsible for which piece you will get!).

I really wanted to sleep till ten but the co-author of the long musical called at nine. Unbelievable. Naturally, I didn't take the call. Last night was fascinating in regards to that whole deal. He, of course, told me he was told the book was a powerhouse and all that needed to happen was about ten minutes of judicious cutting in act one. While ten minutes of cutting is absolutely needed, there are still major problems in act one and they're very easy to identify - in fact, I've been identifying them for the last four months. On this last pass I almost got them fixed but then he couldn't or wouldn't do it. There are several characters who simply have to be cut and their information has to be put in the mouths of characters we actually are interested in. If he can't figure out a way to do that, well, the first act will never play. Those scenes not only feature characters who are not interesting and whom we don't care about, they are passive dramatically as everyone in them are talking about other people. Duh. Exposition 101.
Of course, he had no problem saying the score lacks one powerhouse number that it needs - while some of the score will definitely change, the score is the least of the problems right now.

So, when we finally have THAT meeting, I'm not giving in to his "reasons" or anything else. I'm going to tell him to rewrite those scenes, get rid of those characters, and improve his show.

I love rice, but I can't eat it often because it causes my blood sugar level to rise rapidly.
That said, a comforting bowl of rice pudding with a touch of cardamom, a paella with plenty of sausage and seafood to go with the saffron rice, a risotto with red wine stirred into it for 45 minutes or so, a jasmine rice with Middle Eastern food -- these are all favorites.
I can also remember my least favorite rice dish of all time: I was stupid enough to believe a Crockpot recipe for risotto that you don't have to stir, merely dump the ingredients into the Crockpot and leave alone for 10 hours. It was so nasty I can't begin to tell you what went wrong.

Then those were gone and they were worried about too many producers and not enough seats. I told them there would be no-shows and that I guessed that even the producers who said they'd show up wouldn't - I told them to overbook - they didn't. Hence, there were at least fifteen empty seats last night.

DR JRand, once again your Dream-0-Matic 6000 has proved infallible. I have been thinking much of late of the need to refurbish my working wordrobe, especially my holy elbow dress shirts.

Were the trees creaking? When we hiked Sunday during the high winds the trees were exceptionally loud. I'm used the them by now, Keith isn't & sarcastically said "this is comforting".
In our first house in Michigan we had a huge tree outside our bedroom, all glass windows & a large skylight". The tree had been hit by lightning prior to our moving in. Like an idiot (I didn't hear the warning sirens) I lied in bed during a tornado & watched that the tree didn't fall down on me. The kids were at school lined up in the hallways & I wasn't feeling well & fighting off sleep. I kept thinking if the tree starts to fall I'll roll under the bed. The boys were really mad at me when they found out I had stayed in the bedroom. ;D

Oh, 100 I'm sure. He's already written to me and is telling me he can't wait to get into fixing act one - but I already know what his "fixes" entail, and they're not the problem. But, he'll have to wait - and the composer and lyricist will be telling him the same thing.

Actually just about every form of rice I can imagine, with the exception of wild rice. When I was in college, every Sunday the cafeteria served baken chichen with wild rice stuffing, covered in green gravy. I have never been able to like wild rice since.

TCB on one hand I'm a little impressed your school served the more expensive wild rice. On the other hand I'm horrified gravy was poured over it.
I love a good wild rice. My mother often made it but for some reason I rarely do anymore.

I use amazon a lot. If you type in the name of the author it will give you all their books by date if you want. And if there is a series it usually says so.
When you first type in the name of the author (in the search) it will list a bunch of stuff. But if you click on the author's names it will then just give you a short list and you can organize it by date or whatever. I don't usually do this but it makes it easy to see everything set out.

I feel like i'm going crazy. For the second time in two days i cannot locate something that i thought i knew where it was.
One thing was quite small and on my desk. I cleaned my desk the other day. It is possible it fell over either behind something or into the garbage (beside my desk).
But today's thing is more important (key to a small safe). I've always kept the key in the same place. Granted i don't go in there very often. But i've searched the place where they key always is. Nothing. And i've tried to think of other places where i might have moved the thing the key was in. But no luck. It is driving me crazy. I wonder if i really might have moved it and now i just don't remember.

It is sort of dreary out. It will probably rain later. Hopefully i will be able to go on my bike since it is supposed to rain for the next 4 days. Although perhaps i could bike ride some of those days if the rain breaks (i take an umbrella just in case). I would hate to not bike ride for 4 days.

On amazon's home page type in the name of the author. That lists usually all the books for that author. However if you want an exact list just go to the first link and click on the author's name. That will give you just their shortlist of books.
There are choices for how you want those listed (by date is one of them).
Amazon usually has almost every book listed. I have never come across a book i've been looking for that they did not have listed. But even if by some chance they don't have it usually a seller would be selling it there.

My favorite thing about looking things up on amazon is if the books are in a series. For example, one of my favorite authors, Kelley Armstrong. If you type in her name you get a list of books. But it tells you what series each one is in and what book number of that series.

Jennifer, I decided to practice using Kelley Armstrong's name. This time I found the link for "sort by" & was not doing it correctly. It still didn't put them in correct order, or there are two release dates, hardcover & paper back". I like you can scroll down & see an events page for the author.

As for the Topic of the Day...
Well... Since "rice" is basically the Filipino equivalent of "bread" - meaning it's usually served with every meal - I tend not to order rice - nor risotto - when I go out to eat, or make dinner at home. I grew up eating rice every day, so... However...
I do like sushi, and the quality and preparation of the rice can really make the difference between a good and great meal of sushi. I'm also a fan of the Italian arancini - the fried balls of (leftover) risotto that are usually stuffed with cheese. Yum!

Sounds similar to the "Yellow Rice" or "Spanish Rice" mixes from Zatarain's, Mahatma, Goya, etc. As for the spicing, well... Turmeric and/or saffron is usually used to give the rice the yellow color as well as provide some flavor. Then it's basically a free-for-all from there: bay leaf, pepper, salt (usually more than one would think), all spice, cinnamon, chicken "base", etc. etc., etc.

If it's deadly then you folks should be reading my obituary soon. I love the stuff, and though I haven't prepared any recently, I went through a phase when that was the only kind of rice I was eating.

I have been going crazy trying to find the first two seasons of THE TUDORS for my friend Jeff to borrow. I reviewed them, and I know they're here because both of the first two seasons had gay characters who were very appealing, so I wouldn't have given the sets away, but I'll be damned if I can figure out where I put them. They're not with other shows like THE SIX WIVES OF HENRY VIII or I CLAUDIUS or ROME, and I looked on a shelf with recent series like LIFE and CASTLE, and they're not there either.
Argh!

And not in two second scenes either. They are a vast majority of the show, and the show was the first decent episode in weeks for me.

I began my viewing today with last night's CASTLE. Lots of INDIANA JONES-level fun with Castle and company on the trail of a missing mummy and dodging the curse of a Mayan king. Really enjoyed the episode.

Then I worked on my review project for the day: Jean-Luc Godard's VIVRE SA VIE on Blu-ray. Looks as good as his photographic techniques of the period will allow it to look, and the sound is much better than the DVD (which had a slight hiss. The PCM audio track does not.) The image on the Blu-ray isn't windowboxed either but it is on the DVD.

I checked out all of the bonus features. They're all in 1080i except for the trailer which is 1080p.

Some of the Technicolor stuff (the Cyd Charisse dance from SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, for example) looked spectacular, and I know it'll be after I'm dead before we ever get an HD copy of IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER, but "I Like Myself," "Baby, You Knock Me Out," and "Thanks A Lot But No Thanks" which are on the Blu-rays of TE II and TE III look simply wonderful, and so do all of the numbers from HIGH SOCIETY (filmed in Vistavision which always turns out such razor sharp Blu-rays).

Next I watched the bonus feature on TE II which dealt with the directors, choreographers, and music directors at MGM during the Golden Age. Lots of MGM stars and some behind-the-scenes folks adding comments, too, which make it interesting even if it isn't in the depth which we fans would want.

Then I skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Nothing of interest, but Luke and Reid are on tomorrow.

I ended my afternoon with today's ONE LIFE TO LIVE. As DR Elmore said, Luke and Oliver were on, and it was a wonderful episode with them joyful about having their baby. And the end of their story today with Gigi appearing at the door means they should be on tomorrow to duke it out with her.

TOD: I generally love rice. I was always a big fan of Rice-a-roni.
But my favourite rice dish was Shanghai Jimmy's Chili Rice. When I lived in Dallas in the mid-seventies, there was an old codger, a shrivelled little runt of a fellow in a big cowboy hat, called Shanghai Jimmy and he made something called Chili Rice. My memory was chili over rice with onions and shredded cheese on top. also chopped celery pieces (which I personally think was the key to its uniqueness). It was delicious! The menu also had Shanghai Jimmy's colourful bio on it. I have run across recipes for it on the internet in the past and, once when I was in Dallas giving a screenwriting seminar, my host re-created the dish with a passing similarity. Man, it was good. Or as Shanghai Jimmy's slogan went: "Chili Rice iz very nice!"
Shanghai Jimmy was often found at the local ice-skating rink and that ole geezer was a thing of grace and beauty on skates. Nothing fancy, just smooth...

I was able to go on a bike ride since there was no rain till tonight.
And i found one of the items i was looking for (it had fallen in a very hard to see spot under my desk) but not the key. And it is driving me crazy. Now i am also trying to see if i can find the spare. I looked where i usually hide my spares and it was not there!

Rice - my favorite is my mom's rice that goes with roast beef. You put 1 cup of rice in a can of beef consume. Then when there is about 30 minutes left for the roast beef to cook you put it in the pan with the roast. You can add whatever you want to it- onion, parsley, msg... It's great. It soaks up all the good juices from the roast.

Then I watched NURSE JACKIE. A pretty good episode, but there wasn't an interesting case to occupy part of the plot. Paul Schulze is still a delight as Jackie's jilted lover.

Then I watched last night's CHUCK. Was sorry things had to end as they did, but it couldn't have been any other way, I guess.
I will really miss Brandon Routh as Shaw. I thought he brought a real contrast to the show as a role model for Chuck. He could never be as tough as Casey, but Shaw had a good combination of charm and toughness. (Why didn't Chuck's fighting powers assist him in the fight with Shaw, though? He's taken half a dozen men out before, and he can't beat one man, even one as expert as Shaw? Inconsistent writing.) I did like getting Casey back on the team. He's actually my favorite character.

Next, I watched the SOUTHLAND episode that had missed three weeks ago. This was the one when Ben had to spend a day in the field alone while Cooper paired up with the female cop. Excellent episode, and I'm SO glad I was able to catch back up with it. I had read a recap of it already, but seeing the entire episode was really great.

Next came tonight's NCIS. The murderer's identity totally had me fooled, so good going, guys! I loved Tony's bromance with the police detective. How stupid of them to abandon such a fun character so quickly, however!

And I ended my evening with tonight's LOST.

Stopped at one of the many roadside stands today on the way home. The Somis Nut House. Picked up an assortment of small packages of all the things I wanted to try and never have. Next week will be the family farm fruit and vegtable stands.
Once I get off the 118 freeway, I have maybe a 25 mile drive through farm land. Complete with horses and tractors sharing the road with the cars and trucks. Great fun everyday, and very beautiful.

Not a problem - this is a standard cardiac rehabilitation program for patients who have had open heart surgery; they monitor your heart's performance while you are exercising.

Back from our final performance of the staged reading for the long musical. Some of it went better than the night before, some not - a lot of fumfering but nothing that really hurt anything. The pace was a little off at times, but overall it was quite nice. I shall now write the notes. And I cannot believe I have let these people rope me into a ten-thirty morning meeting - I'm actually really annoyed about it. But then I have a solid month away from it.

I went to rehearsal earlier this evening and Heidi (our choreographer) was going to work on "The Brain Tap." I don't dance in "The Brain Tap," although I will sing from backstage with some other backstage singers. Josh (our director) was going to work with our Fred and Joyce in another room, and for the one news scene that I'm in, another actor wasn't there tonight, so I wasn't needed at all. So I was able to leave shortly after I got there. :)

That was fine by me. Since I now had the evening free, I decided to go to the hospital to visit my friend Margo. She's doing very well after her knee-replacement surgery. Her oldest daughter (of three) was there and we chatted for about an hour or so. Her youngest daughter and her "watcher" came after I'd been there for about a half hour. It turns out that Margo's friend Mara (who has been watching Margo's youngest daughter) is very good friends with Tyler, who is in The Brain! Small world! I'll have to tell Tyler that I know Mara. We don't really know each other very well, but we've met a few times over the years whenever we've both visited Margo at the same time. :)

I then decided to do a little shopping, then came home. I watched both "Lost" and "V," and then an episode of "The Bonnie Hunt Show" from a couple of weeks ago...I'm that far behind. :-\ Slowly, I'll ketchup on her show.

At Fred Meyer, I got a get-well-card and I'll have people at work sign it...even though Margo hasn't worked there for almost three years, several people have asked about her. I'll visit her again tomorrow and deliver the card, and on Thursday, drive her to her friend Dawn's house (but not until she's been officially released from the hospital). :)
