I remember hearing about "The Crying Game" when it first came out and was told (with my permission) what the "twist" was before I saw it.  Finding out about "twists" in movies before I see them rarely bothers me but that was one of the few times that I was actually disappointed that I knew.

We had a very nice and relaxing weekend on Long Island. I'm home now and it's damp and warm.

We hope to see Mr. Moore this weekend as we have CDs for him. We will be in the city for  the entire weekend.

Good morning, all! I was awakened by the jerk above me having noisy sex around 1:45; at 2 am I was writing an email to the landlord. i am very pissed this morning, and I have a very full day: barber at 9, doctor at 10:45, a trip to Toyland to wait for a UPS delivery, hopefully a nap when I get back, and then the 50th anniversary performance of THE FANTASTICKS. There was an event on Saturday that I didn't know about with a lot of former cast members; Bruce Pomahac wrote to me last night that Tom Jones' two boys Sam and Mike asked where I was. The answer's simple: I didn't know!

DR Ginny, I will be at McKinley Grand Hotel (which is right downtown) http://www.mckinleygrandhotel.com

At the moment, the only really huge movie surprise I can remember is the moment in WAIT UNTIL DARK when I realized Richard Crenna was not who he seemed. I'm so tired, I don't know who I am.

Monday morning greetings!  I crashed about 10:30 last night, so woke up quite early this morning.  The rest of the household is stirring, because Fr. Richard has to conduct a funeral in Hamilton at noon.

Today, I'm sending my typesetter-book designer the CD filled with my final edited text, photographs and cover material for my Hollywood memoirs, MY 45 YEARS IN HOLLYWOOD AND HOW I ESCAPED ALIVE

I'm not sure how long the process takes from this point (I still have to correct the galleys), but I assume that the book will be available by the end of summer, or shortly thereafter.

Thanks to BK, Charles Pogue and producer Stanley Rubin for supplying cover blurbs.

But, I never anticipated the "twist" in THE SIXTH SENSE either.

Believe me I am NOT denigrating ANYONE'S viewpoint or belief in Crying Game's twist AND I am NOT gloating but I knew nothing about the movie and when the character in question first appeared on the screen I knew instantly what the twist was. I shall say no more for fear of spoiler accusations.

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK -- I saw it the week it opened and had no idea what was going to happen or what was going to be revealed.

I waited far too long to see THE CRYING GAME.  I knew there was a MAJOR TWIST and while I guessed what it was I didn't know how it was going to be reavealed, so that part was still somewhat surprising.

And while watching TV one night with my mom, a commercial for THE SIXTH SENSE aired and she said, "I'll bet you anything that he is ****"  so that kind of took the wind out that particuar twist.

THE USUAL SUSPECTS.

But I'll admit that the twist in THE CRYING GAME is certainly one of the all-time greats. I figured out THE SIXTH SENSE fairly early in the movie and kept waiting for validation and was so proud when it finally came. The same director's THE VILLAGE didn't fool me either.

Other big surprises: MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS (I hadn't read the book prior to the movie), DIABOLIQUE.

Greetings from sunny Hollywood!

I had a great day yesterday. My friend Paul arrived from Fullerton and we had an early lunch at a place called Sharky's--they have "healthy" Mexican food.   I had a tostada that was really tasty.

We then walked to the Pantages and met our other friend Leonard and two friends of his.

It was time for Chicago again.  Everyone was in top form again--"Mary Sunshine" is just great.   Carol Woods as Mama Morton was wonderful.  Michelle Williams as Roxie was fine, but to tell the truth, I preferred the understudy from the night before.   And I was disappointed that there was no cartwheel in the last song.   Brent was his usual brilliant self!   We saw Brent afterwards for a few minutes--he's so friendly and was very patient taking yet another picture! (actually several pictures).

We went to a place where they serve chicken and waffles ( I can't think of the name of it).  Since I don't eat meat, I had a side of mac and cheese, a salad and cornbread.  It was very good.

So my friends were going to stop at a drinking establishment before heading back to their various locales and someone asked if I wanted to go back and see the 6:30 performance of Chicago.  Well, I found out that the theatre had $25 rush tickets.  Long story short, I got an aisle seat, in the center orchestra (Row T) for only $25, so back I went!   It's really such a great show and I guess I am Brent's biggest fan!

Paul is coming back for lunch and as you may have read (I'm so honored to be mentioned in the notes!) I may meet BK himself !  I'm really looking forward to doing so!

Bye for now!

Like Ben, I guessed the "twist" to CRYING GAME from virtually the first moment that character arrived.  Unfortunately, I almost *always* guess twists early in films, especially when it's been announced that there *is* a twist.  As DW Wife Betsy will attest, I like to memorialize the moment I know what the twist is going to be by telling her my theory, which is almost always correct, LOL.   Maybe that's the reason she likes to watch movies by herself.  ;)

SPOILERS

I like two of the three final teams on TAR.....my favorite is the team is second place right now....or even the team in third place...first place team is just lucky and should have gone home a long time ago.

I get why most people love the 2nd place team. They are very likeable and getting better and better at the race. To me i find the 3rd place team very lucky. Sometimes they are annoying, sometimes slightly cute. But i don't find them too deserving. And i do get why most people dislike brent and caite. But to say they are lucky. They are the most competitive team. They are physically capable. And when they are not fighting i find them to be the strongest team by far. Their downfall in the early episodes was that they would shut down whenever they faced a challenge. But they have not been doing that lately, which is why i think they've risen to the top. The only part i hated from last night's show was when she would not let him go to the bathroom. If i had been him i would have just left!

I was shocked to hear about Lynn Redgrave when I awoke this morning.  She will be missed.

I had time to watch BROTHERS & SISTERS after I got cleaned up. Fairly tiresome stuff with Cooper adjusting to Luc. Justin is the most wishy-washy character. Never seems to be able to find any kind of niche and seems governed by events that happen to others rather than coming up with ideas for life on his own.

And the set-up to write Rob Lowe off the show is pretty obvious and yet slow-moving as well.

I also started on the NCIS rerun of the season premiere, but I only got about 20 minutes in before I had to turn it off. I should be able to get back to it tonight.

After I finish WALKABOUT, I'm guessing I'll be watching TV on the DVR until I can get to join CHUCK around 8:30.

Good Morning! Good Afternoon!

I'm up, I'm up... And, well...

Very sad to wake up to the news of Lynn Redgrave's death.  She was Joanne in Company during the Sondheim Celebration at the Kennedy Center. It was always a joy to watch her in rehearsal and on stage, and even more special sitting next to her and chatting.

Well, I waited around all morning for a call-back from the nurse at our doctor's office.  When I asked her if, given the test results and my increased dosage, I should be concerned about the discomfort in my leg, she said, "I'll leave a note for the doctor and we'll get back to you."  I'm not sitting around all afternoon waiting for that call - they have my cell phone number.

From the looks of our refrigerator, I'd better get to the grocery store...bye for now!

THat was another (minor) shock--I had always thought that 10 Chimneys was up along the Hudson somewhere.  I guess the Lunts took the 20 Century Limited back and forth (and then a Greyhound bus...)

Yes, it's in Wisconsin, near Madison. Even though Anthony worked at Fireside Dinner Theatre twice I was never able to get there. The facility has limited hours and it was not open either time I was there. Anthony made friends with one of the volunteers and got a special tour. I'm terribly jealous!!!

I agree completely.  If the undeserving team wins, *I* may move to "the Iraq."  ;)

And I certainly don't consider THE CRYING GAME to be even close to the best of the movies made in the 90s when in actuality BABY'S DAY OUT was the best movie made in the 90s.

I, and the other 3 people in the audience certainly thought so, anyway.

Once you've been told there is a twist, it's pretty easy to guess it - what I'm saying is if anyone saw The Crying Game and HADN'T heard there was a "twist" then I really doubt anyone would have guessed.  Whereas the "twist" in The Sixth Sense was so obvious to me I thought who couldn't guess this?

I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY hope that people remember Finian's for the Tonys. Shows that have closed seem to be forgotten quickly and some are talking up La Cage as the winner for best revival. While it's not the mess I thought it might be (and believe it or not, I actually thought KG did a good job), Finian's was so much better and so much more deserving of the Tony. But that's not the way the awards work anymore.

It's interesting in the song clip - whenever Dorothy Provine is brushing Natalie with her boa....Provine's face is never seen in the shot....only an arm that could have been a double....maybe Miss Wood objected to Dorothy's method acting in boa-face-brushing.

When I got in from lunch, it was late, so I immediately started WALKABOUT. It looks nice in Blu-ray, but the film never had a solid picture, and the Blu-ray replicates the way it's always looked with mixtures of awesome nature close-ups with some really soft or out of focus photography.

The sound, PCM at 1.1 Mbps, is really impresive though. Some of that John Barry music sounds so lush you'd almost swear it was remixed for surround.

Well, she'll have fewer contenders against her for Tony slots. The Outer Circle and Drama Desk combines nominees from Broadway and Off-Broadway. Without the Off-Broadway candidates, she could sneak in.

One way or another, I'm sure we will get to hear Kristin Chenoweth warble something from the PROMISES, PROMISES revival.  In fact, I'm willing to bet that she somehow gets a nomination (despite being basically ignored by all the other awards thus far.)

Last week on Regis & Kelly's "Broadway Week," for Promises, Promises, she sang "Say a Little Prayer for Me."

Callie cracks me up.  She's been hiding and acting like she's got stomach cramps.  I thought she was sick. I set up the appointment today and when I came home to get her, she was coming out of the room with her litter box after leaving me a BIG present.  She was not pleased to go to the vet, but after a check up, he thinks she took care of it!   I have to watch her tonight and if she's having problems she has to get more tests in the morning.   She's very happy to be home and was very cooperative with her meds tonight.

Hello all-

I just got back from a fun meeting with BK!  It was very nice of him to meet (and treat) me at my favorite place, California Pizza Kitchen!

I feel that I know BK since I've read so much about him on HHW, so it was like talking with an old friend.

I heard a little about the new book, the Kritzer books ( I've got to get those!) and a little bit about a possible future book!  We talked about a lot of things and the time just flew by.

Thanks again, Bruce--I really enjoyed it!

Kevin

I've spent too much time today dealing with a little contretemps on the Film Score Monthly message board, where another label owner basically said why didn't we come to him, that he had the bona fide Albert Glasser session tapes for Earth vs. the Spider and why would we use anything else.  First of all, he should have and could have e-mailed me to ask this question, but instead he posted it on a public forum to specifically make us look bad - without, I may add, actually knowing what source we used.  He did this last week to another label about another score and was roundly hissed.  Had he asked he would have been told what is now posted on the board - our source was exactly those "bona fide" tapes - a digital copy of which was made long before this cretin wormed his way into the elderly family of the composer and had all tapes given to him.  So, not only are they the exact same source, there was no loss of quality.

So, do we think this butt cheek had the human decency to apologize?  No.  Therefore, I turned it all over to MGM because, as their legal department put it, he is doing contract interference by raising the specter of something completely false and which could hurt our sales.  Not only that, his admission of having NOT composer copies of the score tapes but, as he put it, BONA FIDE original session tapes, means he will be getting a little missive from MGM because those tapes belong to the master recording rights' holders (MGM) and not this buffoon.  As I said, he's coming down and coming down hard.  Everyone on the board has seen this for what it is.

And I must concur with DR KEVIN H - no DR of HHW should miss out on the opportunity to meet MR BK - or any other DR - in person....it is always most interesting, entertaining, and memorable.

Then I watched last night's episode of THE TUDORS. Another of Catherine's old flames stops by for blackmail and proceeds to make a complete ass of himself. I can't believe he would have been so blatant about it in the presence of so many witnesses. The previews show Catherine's time is up next week.

Tonight's CHUCK had three plots going. Loved the Chuck-Sarah plot. hated the Casey-Morgan plot. I was tiring of the Captain Awesome plot until it turned into something else. That should be interesting to wrap up the season.

I am supposed to get two review discs this week from Fox: TOOTH FAIRY and ELEKTRA. Of course, they come out tomorrow, so even if they come, one of them will be reviewed after street date.

If Fox is late with the shipping, I'll go ahead and watch the new DVD release from Criterion of John Ford's STAGECOACH. I have the Blu-ray as well, both of which come out on May 25th. As per my custom, I'll do the DVD first.

46 years ago, when I was seventeen, I saw in the first weekend of September the final summer production at  the old shelterhouse which was the original Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. A week later I was a college freshman. The show was the four-year-old musical THE FANTASTICKS and  I don't think I've ever seen a production of THE FANTASTICKS that moved me as much as that first one because it was so fresh and unique. I had never seen anything like it: it was small and intimate, the cast never left the stage, Luisa at one point sat with the pianist, the cast spoke to, and became involved with, the audience, and the sound of the harp and piano was the most interesting instrumental combination I had ever heard. The show is now fifty years old, and I am seventeen again. The current cast is quite wonderful, and Tom Jones' portrayal of Henry Albertson, which he created, is amazing. The man's 80 if he's a day, and his performance deserves to be seen by everyone. He gets the laughs, and there are some huge ones, and never loses the poignancy of someone out of step with time and refusing to give up. The whole cast is good, but Tom is amazing.

It was a wonderful evening at the theatre; I got to talk to two former Luisas, Rita Gardner and Susan Watson, Richard Roland, Robert Viagas, Peter Filichia, Douglas Colby, Bruce Pomahac, and a lot of others. I'm only sorry that Harvey is not feeling well enough to travel, so he wasn't there physically, but he was certainly present in every bar of that glorious score.
