TOD: I would have to say that Flaherty and Ahrens are my favorites writing for today's theater, though I have noticed them using some of the same framing techniques in several of their shows. The "we tell this story" from "Once on This Island" comes up in "Dessa Rose" and "The Glorious Ones." It may work on each show, but not when you listen to them back to back. "Once on This Island" is probably my favorite of their works, though "Ragtime" has some powerful moments. I have a soft spot for "Ragtime," too, beccause I read the book three or four times in high school.

To respond to a comment from DR Edisaurus last night: Are you using "Sitting Watching Jason (Play Baseball)" from "Falsettos"? It was one of the first references I can remember to Jews and Baseball. And certainly hilarious.

If you have and if you don't get William Finn's Infinite Joy. A cabaret of his songs. Stephen DeRose does a hilarious take on the baseball game. He sings all the parts from the Falsettos Production at the East Milford Community Center Benefit Reading.

Looking forward to the last LOST but I'm going to miss it.  I also miss UGLY BETTY.  Sigh.

I have to go out and find a nice pair of heel shoes today.  Toby ate the only comfortable pair I had.  He's a good boy for the most part but he is a puppy and has made a few "mistakes".  I'm also learning to put the things out of his little mouths way.

Good morning, all! I slept in and now I am bathed and dressed and ready for whatever fresh hell comes down the pike.

Today I have to finish a big portion of THE ROSE OF ALGIERS so I can send the edits back to the conductor, and at 3:45 I will meet Bruce Pomahac at this new Dowling Music store on West 57th. We will browse, then go for dinner, and spend the evening watching DVDs and dishing. I bought earlier in the year his Christmas gift, but it's so good I think I will give it to him today.

DR vixmom, to answer your qustion from last night about my collection going to Miami U, there were two reasons: the first is that all the recording work I did for BK, the NY State Theatre Institute, other recordings, pretty much all my work from 1982-1999 has gone to the Library of Congress, but I stopped sending them things because of various disappointments, the last being the big disaster of LIFE BEGINS AT 8:40.

So, in 2008, because of the bed bug madness in the building I live in, I needed to clean out the apartment for extermination and further prevention; I inherited my mother's packrat gene, and this apartment was interesting, like a 19th Centry curio shop, but impossible to move around much.  After my dad's death, I had decided to redo my will to eliminate the Macbeths, and I decided then to leave the theatre collection and work to the Miami University Theatre Dept, since I am an alumnus, along with some royalty payments.

I threw out tons of old magazines, like the complete runs of AFTER DARK, and SHOW MUSIC, 10 years of GRAMOPHONE and FANFARE, and the Kurt Weill Foundation Newsletter, carted a ton of books to a dealer who offered me very little but it was take it or tote the books elsewhere. I threw out tons of videocassettes as well, and whatever didn't end up in the Manhattan Mini-Storage space I rented needed to be tossed or go somewhere, Every trash collection day, I dragged down two or three huge trashbags with things for the garbage men, but I still had a ton of books and personal things that needed to be sorted. My first thought was the Miami University Theatre Dept.  I called the director of theatre, Liz Mullenix, and asked if they would like all of the theatre-related books, plus a lot of librettos and scripts, like all of Noel Coward, Brecht, Ibsen, Chekhov, a ton of English versions of authors I like like Feydeau, Anoulh, Giraudoux, etc. Liz said yes, so I started packing up everything for the theatre.

Then, she decided there was really not enough space in the theatre dept for what I was threatening to send but she did offer from the dept's petty cash to pay for half the shipment to Oxford and she told me she would look into Special Collections at the Miami U Library. And that's how I met the wonderful Janet Stuckey, who's in charge of the Special Collections, and her staff. The initial shipment was huge, around 64 cartons as I recall, and there was a lot of tsuris about the cartons sitting in my buidlings 3rd floor hallway while I was waiting for the authorization to send them. They were finally shipped to Ohio around the end of February 2008 and later in the year I sent Janet another 20 or so. I sent more last year, and I'm up to 17 cartons to ship now.

thank you for sharing all that Elmore!  I am sure that generations of college students will benefit from your generosity.  I hope that you are able to gain some sort of tax benefit  - but of course that is FJL's area!!

I developed a packrat gene myself - in strict opposition to my mother's toss everything out gene -  I still think that the fact that i save everything dates back to the day when I was 12 and went to the library to research and write  a paper for school -  I was away for about 4 or 5 hours --

when I arrived home I found that my mother had ,in my absence, taken to the GoodWill every single one of my dolls, stuffed animals, doll crib, all my childhood books, etc - she decided I had "grown out" of them and therefore they were no longer needed - never considering that I might have had a sentimental attachment to at least some of them

The difference between my stuff and yours however is that no one else will probably ever want it!  (Except of course that ever present Good Will!)

It must be a sleep late day.

Anthony slept almost 12 hours. That's unheard of for him. He went to bed at 8:30pm and got up just after 8am. I, too, went to bed at 8:30 (we were both falling asleep in front of the television) but I got up at my usual 6am.

Oh, I very much agree on Ahrens & Flaherty, my Numero Uno being Ragtime, and second probably A Man of No Importance &/or Lucky Stiff.

I was briefly in Lehman Engel's BMI Workshop with them and remember Lynn commenting after seeing Barnum:  "How could they miss the perfect opportunity?  'There's a Sucker Born Every Minute' was the perfect song for his wife--'and the biggest sucker is me.' "

An example of Lynn's lyrical instinct.

bk - When you mentioned that you were going to see Jason in a show, I kept trying to remember what show he was doing, and then...

I'm glad you liked See What I Wanna See.  I saw it here in NYC at The Public, and was blown away by it. I still remember asking myself, "Am I really crying in the middle of an MJL musical?", during the second act.

With the first act based on the structure of "Rashomon" - in fact, when the show was initially presented up at Williamstown, it was titled as R SHOMON - I thought that might be a good "hook" for you.

*And it's nice to know that Perry Ojeda is alive and well and working in LA. He was my "Prince Charming" in Cinderella a couple of years ago.

*Did they use the full band? Bruce Coughlin's percussion writing - rhythm and mallets - is very effective.

They had five pieces - two keyboards (with keyboard two player playing real percussion as well), drums, and two reeds, so I suppose one of the keyboards was also playing bass since there was definitely bass.  It sounded terrific.  The first act is still titled R SHOMON (a movie house is showing the film and is missing a letter on the marquee - a plot point).

Oh...

Last night, I attended a concert by the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas (http://www.poamericas.org/) at Alice Tully Hall (the recently renovated Alice Tully Hall).  The concert was presented as part of a series of events commemorating the Bicentennial of Mexico, so, consequently, the music of Mexican composers was featured on the program - with a brief detour to Argentina via Piazzolla.  My friend, Eric, was playing piano, and since he had some comps, well...

It was a very nice program, and even though a good portion of the works reflected more of the European training and influence of/on the composers, there were some moments of pure "Mexicanisms" throughout. The true highlight of the concert was Ponce's "Concierto del Sur" with Pablo Sainz-Villegas (http://www.pablosainzvillegas.com/) as the guitar soloist.  WOW! Truly some of the most expressive and cleanest(!) guitar playing I've ever heard. I used to play for a lot of guitar majors in school, so I know my good gee-tar playin'! ;)  In any case... I was truly impressed.  And his encore of "La Boda de Luis Alonso" was simply stunning!

-And here's a YouTube Clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dxmxf45QNIU) of him playing that piece from an earlier appearance in NYC.

As for the Topic of the Day...

Count me in as a another fan, admirer of Ahrens & Flaherty.  They really know how to write a good "sigh".

There are slew of "new musical theatre" writers out there right now - who have their slew of admirers and "fan boys and girls". Alas, since they're all trying to be "original" and not sound like Sondheim, JRB, MJL, etc., they all end up sounding the same to me.  It all sounds "constructed" and "calculated" to me, rather than "inspired" and "honest".

New York City street vendors to accept credit cards

Starting in June, if you've got a hankering for some street meat in New York City, you'll be able to use a credit card to purchase your kebab. As part of a trial program in Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx, select street vendors will begin accepting credit card payments for food.

And the whole truth of the matter:

There was also a flop about Jackie Robinson and BK recorded two numbers from it on UNSUNG MUSiCALS, and there was a revue, DIAMONDS, that had the great song "Hundredas of Hats."

Yesterday we went through a really old house - late 1800s early 1900s that is likely going to be torn down by the city to put in a community garden.   I'm pretty disgusted about it.  The house is HUGE and has some really cool door knobs, hinges, woodwork etc.  but the idea that they are going to spend $45,000 in taxpayer money to tear down the house and put in a garden when there is empty space available for a garden bugs me a lot.    I was hoping that one of the guys with us may decide to buy it before the deal is done with the city, but I don't think it's going to happen.

I would have loved to have the After Dark collection.

I was killing myself laughing. I don't know if the interview is on abc.com or youtube yet. But basically they promised that each episode would be self-contained and that you wouldn't need to watch the episode before to be able to follow each episode.

On baseball songs: There's also the part of "One Hundred Easy Ways" from "Wonderful Town," but the I think the point of yesterday's conversation was about Jews and Baseball. Still, are there any more baseball songs out there. Obviously something from "Babe," but I haven't heard the whole score, only the song Emily Skinner recorded, "A Growing Boy."

I loved that version of the story.

When I worked in Florida, we had some great times at the office. One day, I organized a musical writing seminar for all the folks who loved "Jane Eyre." (A really bad version was playing at the Asolo that year and it was not the one that played Broadway a year or so later.) We got some great songs, including the grand finale: "Love Is Blind -- And So Are You," in which Jane sings to blind Mr. Rochester about how beautiful she's become but he can't appreciate it. I did a choral piece while the estate burned.

We had a new publisher at the time, and he didn't know what was going on, but he was sure shocked when he looked over one woman's shooulder and read the first line of her song, "There's a Dead Girl in My Bed."

I think I still have those lyrics someplace. I'm sure I do. I fit in with the packrat club that has shared a few stories here today. I even have the stock of a now-defunct mystery bookstore. Ugh.

Back from the signing, which was surprisingly well attended, about twenty-something people in all.  We sold quite a few books, I read, I answered questions and it was, for me, the best signing I've ever done.  In attendance, Cason Murphy, his girlfriend and the girlfriend's sister, my helper Ashely, PennyO, Sam Bobrick and his ever-lovin' Julie, several folks from the film music community, David Wechter, pianist/composer Rob Bowers, James McCloskey (he used to run the LACC theater department), a nightclub singer friend of Rob's, our very own Mark Wyckoff, my pal Lee Doebler and her two beautiful kids, Barbara Deutsch, Harrison White (he's going to Broadway with the Ray Charles musical, and played Dick Davis in the Nudie reading), Rebecca Johnson from The Roxy reading, Adryan Russ and her ever-lovin' Dale, and several others.  So, now that I think about it, at least twenty-five people, a terrific turnout.

No shows included dear reader Sam who, for the second year in a row, missed the signing - of course, she said she'd be there, but alas, she wasn't and no call either.  And a few others had cancelled this morning.  But I had a blast and it was great.  Cake was eaten, too.

And yes last night was MEDIUM's season finale.  Interesting, because there were rumors that they were going to be cancelled (the show is not cancelled). But you could see that the writers wrote last night's show as if it could be the series finale.

It was sort of odd. And it could have worked for a series finale. But i'm glad it's not the end.

I opted to only read the second story even though I'm sure the photo isn't nearly as bad as some I see on Facebook.  I have a number of friends who are involved in animal rescue.
That's why I posted the warning.

I couldn't look at either one.  I get choked up reading the postings at the Humane Society.

You don't want to see the stories or photos out of Romania, though I admit to putting some of them on my FB wall, not the worst of the worst.  I truly admire the people who expose themselves over & over again to these horrible situations & do what they can to help the abused.

Damn!

Does that mean you won't be sending me any cake?

 :(

I am impressed by Pablo also!

...oh, I guess I should have say that after I watch the  video ;)

Bought it because she sings "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most," and I feel that way about any and all of the songs from "The Nervous Set," one of the many financial flopsicals that I listen to way too much.

RE: PARTRIDGE FAMILY and LAVERNE AND SHIRLEY...you know how some shows from your childhood still are funny even when you watch them today...I mean, GILLIGAN'S ISLAND, THE MUNSTERS, THE ADDAMS FAMILY, I LOVE LUCY, they all seem to hold up, and I laugh heartily at them...but PARTRIDGE FAMILY...well, I am kind of surprised it lasted as long as it did...and why was David Cassidy considered such hot stuff?

LAVERNE AND SHIRLEY gave me a few chuckles, but I don't plan on watching any of the other episodes on the disk...even though that Eddie Mekka is quite the hunk! I had forgotten about him. The show was one of my favorites as a kid...maybe there was just not enough competition on the other channels at the time.

Mekka is also quite a singer, from what I understand, but why are there no CDs of him around? I would buy them.

The great song from "Babe" was recorded by Debbie Gravitte, on UNSUNG MUSICALS III; it's called "Hero" and breaks my heart.

I am back from a great day. My departure time was totally screwed up by discovering my Facebook accoutn was tampered with and that sent me into security anxiety. As a result, I left late andarrived late. The first person I rasn into was our DR Jose, to whom I was rather rude, quite unintentionally. I had to find Bruce Pomahac and let hm know I was there. It's a new store, I didn't know the territory and I think it's rather peculiarly laid out. After I found him, got introduced to the owner to whom he was speaking, I went looking for Jose and could not find him. I am feeling rather unhappy at the whole turn of events, because it really was nice to see Jose. It's been some time since I last saw him.

After that, we went to dinner, and then we went back to Bruce's where we watched the 1930 film of THE VAGABOND KING, with a great performance by Jeanette macDonald and a stagebound, bravura matinee-idol one from Dennis King. After that we watched the 1958 tv broadcast of ALADDIN with Sal Mineo, Dennis King, Cyril Ritchard, Anna Maria Alberghetti, Basil Rathbone, Howard Morris, and Una Merkel.

Now i'm home.

DR elmore - No worries.  I could sense you were "on a mission", so... And I was actually on my way out since I, too, was running late.  I got a bit nostalgic and carried away while I was browsing.  I really do hope that they get the word out, and start pulling some customers from Colony.

And I'm sure our paths will cross again sooner or later, and for more than just a few seconds.

I just had a nice chat with Mr Ron Raines, who's in St Louis rehearsing A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC with Sian Phillips and Amy Irving, directed by Isaac Mizrahi. I am now off to meet Bruce Pomahac and have a great aftwernoon and evening. Walter Willison sent a lot of his friends an email about the opening of this new music shop, so I'm suspecting he will be there holding court.

The recording of A Little Night Music with Siân Phillips as Desiree is one of my favorites.

Weren't people joking about a baseball musical yesterday?  I mean, there was a little show called DAMN YANKEES about 50 years or so ago.  ;)

There was also a flop about Jackie Robinson and BK recorded two numbers from it on UNSUNG MUSiCALS, and there was a revue, DIAMONDS, that had the great song "Hundredas of Hats."

And there was a little show about Jackie Robinson called NATIONAL PASTIME that starred a handsome actor by the name of Tom Birkeland as Branch Rickey.

I hear that as well as being terribly handsome he is also immensely talented

However, this is the second time he's played Tevye. A couple of years ago, he played Tevye in a production of Fiddler at the historic Bucks County Playhouse.  Here's a YouTube Clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFKAtLD1J00). -Consider yourself warned. :-\

the John Engeman theatere is in my neck of the woods- I was considering going to see Fiddler there but now having seen that You Tube clip.....

Well... In all fairness to Mr. Mekka - as well as to The John Engeman Theater - that clip from Bucks County wouldn't do anyone any favors: the quality (or lack thereof) of the video and the totally canned/synthed "orchestra".  I've seen a few shows at the Engeman, and they do pretty good work.

The most frightening Eddie Mekka news of all time is that he's about to star in a production of Fiddler On The Roof - probably dinner theater or stock or something.

I have heatd good things about it - I have't made it to any shows there yet

well I knew he would love it as much as I did - and he would want his own copy - thanks for getting it to me so fast - now I have to find a portable cd player for him  (Likea walkman) so he can hear the cd

And speaking of baseball, has anyone here read Stephen King's BLOCKADE BILLY?

is it out yet? I haven't been able to go shopping yet. Liked the baseball book he wrote with Stewart O'Nan and "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon."

I have the pop-up edition of "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon (http://www.amazon.com/Girl-Who-Loved-Tom-Gordon/dp/0689862725/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1274593818&sr=1-1)."

Just had to share. :)
