Well, you've read the notes, the notes answered questions and solved mysteries, and now it is time for you to post until the mysterious cows come home.

Well, you've read the notes, the notes answered questions and solved mysteries, and now it is time for you to post until the mysterious cows come home.

SPOILER:

Because I had nothing better to do and was waiting to fall asleep, I tuned into the show's last 15+ minutes.  [I hadn't watched LOST since the first season]

Questions:

1. Was everybody dead from the beginning of the series?

Or,

2. Was this reunion in the church supposed to be taking place years after the island...when everybody had died by natural/unnatural causes?

Or,

3. Was this church reunion all in Matthew Fox's imaginaton?

Good morning, all! I'm off to Toyland this morning. I have a lot of things to accoplish, some menial like photocopying a number of full scores of THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER to be attached to the last edits and some more complex, like perusing the BABES IN TOYLAND scores, checking harp parts and spot checking beaming of the notes. This reformatting has led to hell and confusion and I'm rather bent out of shape over it all.

Hopefully, Mr Anthony Morelli will stop by to visit and drop off a job I asked him to do for me, and it will be nice to see him.

As to the rest of my day, I have very few plans. Our DR KevinH is in Manhattan, and it would be nice to visit with him. I'll give him a call and see what he's up to.

My jerk neighbor was up stomping around sometime between 6 and 6:30 with two different door slams, both exits from the stomping going on, so I don't know if the current lady on the squeaky bed left, or the dog has learned to use the door. If that were so, I'd think the damned barking would stop.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday, DR Jeanne !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My favorite part of the LOST finale? When Jerry, George, Cramer and Elaine bust out of jail.

Actually, it was the relief that people would stop fretting over a lot of pretentious twaddle.

Just as DR CILLA LIZ wrote - I didn't want LOST in the past couple of season either - so the commercial laden preview was a great help to me.....the SHOW part...NOT the commercials part....

I enjoyed the last episode although it shore wuz my-tee long!

And the difference between Matthew Fox'x speaking voice and his "Jack" voice was interesting.

Otherwise...

I liked the Finale of "Lost".

However, bk, I do know some "Lost-ies" who were not at all happy with the way the series ended.

And as for other people's - both DRs and non-DRs - musings concerning the whole "Lost Phenomenon", well... We all invest our time - and emotions(?) - in different things.  For some people it's a TV show. For others it's a book.  A favorite movie or series of movies.  Doesn't really make one form better than the other. Just different.

As for myself, I did watch the entire series over the past six years.  However, it was not my life for the past six years.  And I don't think it was anyone else's LIFE for the past six years.  For an hour, sometimes two hours each week - it was something to watch, to enjoy and to puzzle over for a couple of weeks at a time.  -Just like any other TV show.  It's been fun reading some of the "naysayer" posts on Facebook and Twitter from people who had never watched an episode of "Lost".  To me, it makes me think that they think that we spent every minute of every day of the past six years watching, living and breathing "Lost".  Basically, the people who hadn't watched "Lost" were getting caught up in all of the hype too.

You either watched it, or you didn't.  -Just like "Seinfeld". Just like "M*A*S*H*". Just like "Newhart", "Will and Grace", "Friends", "Doctor Who", etc., etc., etc.

Just my $.02.

And the promo showed Matthew Fox and Jimmy Kimmel in the shower, but that sketch never showed up on that show....must have been from a previous show....

I like Jimmy Kimmel - ever seen BEN STEIN'S MONEY.....but I don't watch late evening talk shows since they turned into PROMO fests for the guests, not really a chance to see them talk.  They seem almost as scripted as other shows....not much spontaneous happens.....you can tell that the guests know exactly (for the most part) what questions the host is going to ask.  Everyone has an agenda.....

Late night TV Talk Shows are now ALL the Mike Douglas Show - which was pretty bad.....even with good guests.

For others it's a book.  A favorite movie or series of movies.  Doesn't really make one form better than the other. Just different.

And here's my 2 cents: for a novel, a film, a play to work for me, whether it's a fantasy or a kitchen sink drama or something in between, there's a logic and sense, perhaps, that everything's heading to its logical conclusion that, if not inevitable, at least is satisfying. I don't always think the continual red herring approach to your story necessarily leads to anything beyond a lot of sloppiness - David Lynch's work is is an example, especially in the ridiculously overrated TWIN PEAKS (I am abig fan of BLUE VELVET and ERASERHEAD) - and in the case of LOST, when you throw into the mix a tv series that can be canceled on the whim of its network, a writers' strike, a change in producer, network executive requests, or a bored cast member wanting out, a lot of good intentions get brushed aside to create a number of episodes to fill a season.  Then, along, comes the finale, and someone has to reconcile this stew. Good luck covering all of the territory, the red herrings, the moments of "symbolism" or whatever.

ALL IN THE FAMILY's "finale" was so emotionally downbeat and completely unexpected for a network TV show.  That final image of Archie and Edith just sitting in their separate chairs and experiencing their sadness over Mike and Gloria's departure and not consoling each other--it was stunning.  They would never do anything like that on TV today...

Greetings from NYC!  I arrived yesterday, met my friend from Florida and went immediately to Brooklyn. He's working on a project where he takes photos of locations where certain movies were filmed.

Afterwards I went to see A Little Night Music--it was very enjoyable.  Angela Lansbury is one of a kind. The entire cast was great, though I'm not sure Catherine Zeta-Jones deserved the ovation she got for Send in the Clowns (all I could compare her to was Barbra).

I also saw our own Kevin Spirtas in a show called Mother Tongue.  I said hello after the show, but he apologized for not being able to chat since he was on his way to the Drama Desk Awards. I just found out (here) that Christopher Fitzgerald won one-that's great-he's so deserving.

Today my friend and I have to pick up our tickets for tomorrow's Book Expo--the main attraction is Ms. Streisand herself, promoting her book called "My Passion for Design," which comes out in the fall.

Hope to see DR elmore if possible.

That's it from 8th Avenue!

Kevin

DR KevinH, if all you've heard of "Send in the Clows" is this production's and Streisand's, get your butt to a CD location and lay hands on the original Broadway cast recording. Glynis Johns is, for me, the best Desiree Armfeldt ever, and the original production was one of the most gloriousthings I've ever seen on a stage. My second best version of "Send In The Clowns"? Cleo Laine on her Carnegie Hall album, which seems to be sadly out of print. She was one of the most amazing performers I ever saw live.

Regarding LOST, DR Jose has made a statement which cannot possibly be bettered.

I came to LOST late.  I watched the first season once it came out on dvd, the main reason for that being the first season's scheduling was all awry, with World Series, pre-emptions, repeats et al.
I was impressed with the pilot episode and found the characters to be a group of people I wouldn't mind spending time with on a island frought with mystery, danger and many elements of the unknown and UNKNOWABLE.

LOST, to me, was, and will be, akin to me a great book, which one can return to time and again, either to re-read (re-watch) a favorite chapter or to delve into in its completeness once again.  (I have already watched "The Constant" more times than any other episode of any television series).

As for comparisons to TWIN PEAKS, David Lynch gave us a swell first season, but later seasons showed a true lack of interest from both Lynch and Mark Frost.  The one good thing to come out of the latter seasons of TWIN PEAKS was David Duvhovny's Dennis/Denise.

As to other shows, with LOST, I never lost interest in the characters, the themes, the philosophies - and even enjoyed watching the floundering episodes dealing with Niki and Paolo - LOST's writers led me to seek out the writings referenced on the show.  With THE X FILES and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, I lost all interest, and saw THE X FILES limp through three lackluster seasons before the show was mercifully pulled from the schedule.

Writers may not be at the mercy of network execs ready to pull the plug on their current work, but, Flannery O'Connor and Charles Dickens (to name two), left unfinished works which I still enjoy.  Had it not been for LOST, I never would have discovered Flannery O'Connor's writings.

DR Druxy, I am more than willing to embrace your #2 posit as the likeliest; it's the one that I gleaned from the two-character dialog immediately preceding it.

I will be contemplating LOST for a very long time, and am thankful that I found a television show which I felt was worthy of devoting some time to for a few years.

One aside, I got into a very heated discussion last night with a "Skater," who wrote off the entire episode as b.s. because SPOILER ALERT zhad grad flat rested humtp  fhol hoijmmm pouteer d,oloug,  hooom a certain pairing didn't materialize.

Agreed.

However, I was commenting on the "observations", not what was being observed (the writing, the acting, the show).

DR Druxy - You may want to put a SPOILER warning before your "Lost" questions.

Sorry about that, but I figured that, since it was over, all secrets had been revealed.

The secrets may have been revealed, but that doesn't mean that ALL DRs have watched the Finale yet.  I believe DR Michael Shayne would appreciate a SPOILER warning.

But he wants it for the next six months!

Actually, it's coming out in August...so...three months or so is all we'll be required to wait.

1.  I think an argument can be made for this...yes...especially given the final image from last night's finale.  It was the wreckage of an Oceanic aircraft...and it was all rusted.  I think that shot represented "our" reality, although that should not be taken as an indication that none of what we saw was not real.  We are in touch with the existence we have...and in the case of "Lost", I think all the characters were in a different, although no less real, existence.
2.I think an argument can be made for this...yes...although we never saw it, the implication is that many years must have elapsed before the meeting in the chapel.  Hurley's comment to Ben, who I take it was holding himself back (in a self-imposed purgatory) until he felt worthy, indicates that they protected the island jointly after Jack saved the island.  Jack's father, Kristian, also intimated that things went on after Jack died.
3.  According to Kristian, they all created that "place" as a meeting point.  I presume that they were all ready to go into that light that was consuming the chapel after Kristian opened the doors.  Who can say how many lifetimes may have elapsed until they all had those moments of recognition about the island and their connections with the others?

I can't fault anyone not willing to go with what was presented.  Not being interested in the show does not make the show "pretentious twaddle" in any respect.

DR Jose, I am intrigued by the notion there is someone out there who wrote off the finale because a pairing didn't take place.  Who needed pairing up?

The best moment for me (i.e. the one that had the biggest emotional jolt for me) was Charlie and Claire at the concert.  As all those memories rushed at both of them, it reminded me how significant a part of the show Charlie was for three seasons. It was all the more cathartic to realize that even in this "other" reality, each individual had sacrifices to make that brought them redemption.

I am not totally "clear" about what I saw last night.  As with all mysteries concerning life and existence, there can be no "clear" answers, but I thought it was very wise of the writers/producers to give viewers images, words and possibilities that can be interpreted based upon their own personal belief systems.

It was one hell of a six-year ride.  I, for one, would not have missed a second of it!  Dkj ;laj ;lkjfdjkl f;lkj ;kjal;fjk;kljasoi; jkflkja;lk j kj'KJ ;LJ KLJASFJ ;JKL FAS JK LA;LDKJJKjjkdfjkl;lkaj; l kjflkj l;j;kj.

Ron, it was I who mentioned the pairing that didn't take place.  It's a pairing that I didn't want to take place, but, one that a lot of others, sometimes called "skaters" wanted to see.  For me, it was love versus lust and love won out in the end for all parties.  And it was I who got into the heated discussion with the skater who wrote the finale off as b.s.

Oh--that kind of "Skater"...  I think that pairing came to a distinct dead-end in the third episode of this season, if not at the end of last season.

Enjoying all the posts about Lost.  I understand everything in Jose's post.  I was a MASH fan but I certainly missed about half the episodes during its run.  That finale was pretty terrific.  Same with All In The Family and others.  In fact, I cannot think of a TV show outside of The Twilight Zone where I never missed an episode during its actual run.

I have mixed thoughts about Sean Hayes and the Tonys. I sincerely enjoyed him in a rather tepid revival. He was a bright spot in the show, IMHO, but hosting the Awards in a 6,000 seat theatre doesn't seem to be the best use of his talents. Although over the years (with some exceptions) the host doesn't do a hell of a lot anyway. It seems to be more a name thing nowadays.

And as much as I love the Tonys, I too, feel like Dan. They don't give a rat's ass about the core supporters of the Tonys anymore. It's all about ratings and appealing to people who don't go to Broadway shows anyway.

I'm glad I went to the Tonys last year and not this year. Not because SH is the host but because the list of nominees is so crazy and, in some ways, just plain stupid.

Oh, well. Back to the Carnegie Corporation.

While I could think of lots of sit-com series finales I've seen and enjoyed, I really had a hard time coming up with a one-hour drama finale I've seen. I know Bruce didn't include that criteria, but in the spirit of "Lost," I thought I should try to stick with that format. I liked the finale of "Queer as Folk" although I didn't understand why not one word was mentioned of the idea that Brian could rebuild Babylon and bring it back to its old glory.

I'm sorry I disappeared for so long, but the company I work for installed software to block everyone's access to any web site that's considered "enterainment" or "social networking". But then a co-worker told me if I just keep trying the same address over and over again, I could eventually gain access...that worked...very strange.

Third time, too!!!  Nice to zip past the commercials and stick with the overall drama as it develops.  I have some thoughts to share that are a bit different than my response to Mr. Druxman's earlier post.  After careful assessment of Jack's meeting with his father, it seems clear that everything that happened when Oceanic 815 crashed was real, after all.   Everything that happened on the island was real.  This final season's "flash sideways" was, in my opinion, a purgatorial construct "made" by them all until they could be reunited.  As Kristian told Jack, all those people in the chapel "made" that place so that they could all come together...some who died before Jack did and some who died long after.  And when the time was right, they began "remembering", mostly instigated by Desmond who apparently had first insight into what was going on.   I am going to (conveniently??) discount that last, pre-credits scene of the beach with the wreckage of the plane.  It was not a part of the story before it ended...before Jack closed his eyes, or before the light enveloped all the cast in the chapel.  Each episdoe of "Lost" has always ended with "Lost"in white letters on a black background, and the beach scenes came after that.    An oddity about that wreckage is that it was all rusted as though it had been there for years, but the clothing strewn around was all brightly colored...something that would have been impossible in the climate, especially getting drenched in the constant rains and then baking in the brightness and heat of the sun for six years.   My discounting it is, possibly, a "convenient" means of making the rest make more sense, but everything Kristian told his son says that what they all experienced on the island was real, that the experiences he had on that island were the most important ones he had in his life and that the people waiting for him in the chapel with the most important people of his life.   I didn't find anything "too gooey", but we all have our levels of tolerance for sentimentality, and I do think there was a bit much of it in the chapel at the end.  I felt very sorry for John Locke sitting not only unpaired, but alone in the pew on his side of the chapel.  I suppose Ben would have sat with him had Ben forgiven himself enough.  Boone might also have sat with Locke since they shared the most time together on the island. The scenes of Jack painfully making his way through the bamboo forest were gut-wrenching, especially as he passed a tree with a very weathered tennis shoe caught on it.  When he collapsed and lay on his back in the same position he took in the first scene of the first episode, it seemed to me that the entire series was ready to "just let go", just as all the survivors were ready to do in the chapel.

I paid more attention to the scene between Desmond and Mrs. Widmore at the concert.  She seemed to know exactly what was going on and was distraught that Desmond might take Daniel with him.  But he assured her it wouldn't be him.  I suppose Daniel and Charlotte were meant to find a different path to the light.

The scoring of this TV episode was nothing short of magnificent.  There have been CD releases of music from each of the previous five seasons, and I'm hoping the sixth season CD will be issued this year.  I'd prefer a 2-CD release, with one release a complete soundtrack of the final episode. Act One Scene One tonight, DR TCB.....I am working to make it interesting.

I am afraid there is just too damn much exposition in that scene to ever make it intesting.

I hope this is the first of a lot of Finian awards in the next few months. I am very happy for Chris; he is one of the best.

TOD:

I don't know that I ever stuck with any long runniung show long enough to see the finale, except maybe NEWHART, which I did think was funny at the time, but I remember very little about.

Most other shows I liked simply got cancelled and never had an official "finale" or the "finale" was nothing special, it was just like any other show.

I have seen the finales of SEINFELD and PERRY MASON, but don't remember much about them either.

So, I guess I have no favorite as of yet.

T.O.D.

Most of my life, I have been either rehearing a show or appearing in a show; so i missed most of the final shows.  I did watch the M*A*S*H finale, but I don't remember much about it.  I suppose I would have to give the prize to ST. ELSEWHERE, just because it was so far out of left field.

I've been dealing with yet more trouble caused by a certain individual - every time I think he can't go further with his lunacy, he goes further.  Today, I finally responded to him, and it was a doozy - very calm, well thought out - I copied my MGM lady on it and she said it was perfect.  I told this guy that any further correspondence from him personally would go unread - and that if he wanted to contact me from here on in he should do it through an attorney.  Another label's response wasn't quite that nice :)  And that took up more time than it should and now I have to have a work session with David, which I'm going to cut short to an hour.

Also finally heard from the helper - she JUST woke up.  She had to go to the emergency room last night (abdominal pain) and they gave her pills that knocked her out.  She's sorry and says it won't ever happen again (she could have just written me an e-mail before she went to bed or left a text on my cell) - she can come on Wednesday, but she's got another job and she always seems to have to leave by two - and on Wednesday I have a work session for the long musical in the morning and I couldn't start before twelve-thirty.  I asked her to do what she needed to do to spend at least three hours here - if she can't, I have to have someone else do it.

I also found some interesting LOST slash fiction on line, coupling Jack with Sawyer.

I have seen some bizarre slash fiction on fanfiction.net and not only on LOST....

I am not surprised to see that on Lost but it is unusual for soaps to slash fiction...

However, with that being said, I have seen some very graphic fanfictions relating to the some of the soaps that would qualify for porn

I don't know that I ever stuck with any long running show long enough to see the finale, except maybe NEWHART, which I did think was funny at the time, but I remember very little about.

Is that because you didn't watch the original Bog Newhart show?  I think that was the best & funniest ending of any series.

Quote
Most other shows I liked simply got canceled and never had an official "finale" or the "finale" was nothing special, it was just like any other show.
I married Dora had a funny ending to the abruptly canceled show while informing the audience they were canceled.

I did not like the last episode of Seinfeld.

THE FUGITIVE was great, and possibly the first series to wrap up the storyline.

I record shows like the LOST stuff last night and start watching about 30 min to 1 hour into it...then I can zip past all the commercials.  Whenever it was all commercials, I switched to my recording of Celebrity Apprentice.  Sounds goofy but it worked

DR Jane, I remember what happens in the NEWHART finale, it is just that I don't recall what I thought of it at the time. I am not sure if it was a total surprise to me, or if I already know what was going to happen when I saw it (had read as spoiler or first saw it as a rerun, or something).

I do think it was a wonderful finale idea and since I don't really have a favorite finale, that should be the one.

re: DR Druxy's spoiler LOST post from last night.  I'm not saying that it was done intentionally. And DR Michael Shayne's request was probably missed, but I don't think it's right to put the main LOST finale spoiler in a post without any spoiler space given (this was fixed after DR Jose mentioned it).

The show ended at 11:30pm with work for many the next morning.  So many people record things. I appreciate that the post was modified, but that is just my 2 cents.

I have to say that I enjoyed LOST and am very sorry to see it go.

I kinda got "Lost" in the 5th season because I wasn't able to watch the show because of other matters that were going on in my life at the time.   ::)

I felt the same way with UGLY BETTY, which I also missed, but thank goodness for DVD's and Netfilx!  I will just catch up on what I missed and rewatch the last seasons so I'll be able to understand things a bit better.

I think one of my all time favorites will always be BABYLON 5.    Watching it the first time was a joy but going back and watching the whole thing all over again, knowing how it ended was even better because I was able to see the clues I missed along the way.   Things that made no sense to me the first time around took on new meanings and I could have kicked myself for not picking up on them.

I think LOST will prove to be the same way.

And I don't look at it as time lost (no pun intended) but I also feel like watching them again will be like going back and rereading a beloved book.  Lord knows, I've read DUNE many times and manage to pull something new out of it each time while I enjoy "visiting" with Paul and all my old friends again.

I think the reason why some were disappoinated was that we wanted the sideways world to be real. I don't get how they can say that fans will be happy knowing that  all the good stuff that happened there was not real.  I wanted all those people to really be reunited, not in heaven but in the real world.  I find the last 15 minutes to be a cop out. But that said, i loved the rest of the finale. I loved how they ended the island stuff. It made sense, it was interesting. ANd it worked for me.

TOD:  The finale to "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer" is still my favorite all-time series ender.  "Lost" is a close second.

I couldn't stand "Seinfeld," but I watched the finale.  I guess it was a great ending for a show I never liked...at least the characters got what I thought they deserved.  Hope they're all still in that jail cell...unwashed, unfed and still arguing about stupid stuff.

Loved "Newhart" and "Friends" finales.  The "Frasier" finale was good but sad.  I don't remember the end of "Cheers" or "Taxi", but I know I watched 'em.

As for "M*A*S*H, I remember being underwhelmed after all the hype.  It's a show I couldn't bear to watch in re-runs, though.

"Mary Tyler Moore Show" was my favorite comedy show farewell, bar none.

I've read a lot of reports today about how "Lost" didn't do so well compared to all the "powerhouse" show finales.  I think it significant that EVERY finale it was compared to was a half-hour sitcom.   Hmmmm...let's see....a 2 1/2-hour fantasy drama didn't do as well in the ratings as a bunchy of half-hour sitcoms?  Geez...go figger!

I'd be more interested in how it compared to other "dramatic" shows.

OTOH, it's phenomenal that a show like "Lost" did as well as it did...and always with quality in its writing, acting,  production and music..

Case Considered - Awaiting Final Order.   That could mean anything.  I was told it could take between 3 and 9 months to find out WHAT the Final Order is.   Sigh.

Well, Dancing With The Stars awaits.

Laters all!

Working via iChat - my mind is elsewhere - dealing with the ASS.  I'm trying one thing, and if that works we'll put out the CD.  If it doesn't, I'm done with it and people won't get the score.

On the subject of Sean Hayes hosting the Tonys: Why have a host? I know, they can be good -- Neil Patrick Harris, Hugh Jackman, Rosie O'Donnell -- but Hayes is a little too light and not as varied as some of his predecessors. I'd rather see more musical numbers than listen to somebody make lame jokes.

By the way, has anybody read about the proposed revival of "Ballroom"? Marvin Hamlisch has been brought in to augment Billy Goldenberg's original score. I know we talked about Billy recently with the Kritzerland release of his score for "Busting," but I wonder why he's not writing the new music. "Ballroom" has some beautiful songs in it. "I Wish You a Waltz" has been a personal theme song since I started taking ballroom lessons, "Fifty Percent" is spectcular (even when Bea Arthur sang it), and "A Terrific Band ..." is a charater number most any show would kill to have. Sure, one or two of the ballroom songs are dated, but Goldenberg could write new ones as well as Hamlisch.

I mean about the final episode, he loved the show.  We thought it was great in the beginning and tired of it after awhile.  These people kept getting worse, not better.

I thought it was a great series with the lousiest finale in television history. I still laugh myself silly at the reruns.

They weren't supposed to get better. It was a series about selfish, socially unredeemable people and that was its greatest virture: no sentimentality, just obnoxious opportunists making asses of themselves.  I still think it's one of the best.

I watched "Seinfeld" for the first few seasons and I know many of the storylines are now classics, with words like "mansierre" entering the vocabulary and the practice of double dipping disturbing way too many people. (I guess few of those people have ever eaten in Europe where it's fairly commonplace).

Yet I lost interest and didn't care about the finale. Yet I can understand why the letdown of that episode has the show's fans fuming to this day. When something is that personal to you, as that show obviously is, it hurts to see it exit on anything less than a high point.

We should have watched a movie, after MEDIUM we had nothing left to watch.  I do, Keith doesn't.  I have Bones & Glee.  Keith doesn't want to watch either.  I kind of sped through Glee on my own.  I didn't realize who was the glee teacher at Jesse's school until she began singing, then the light bulb went on in my head.  When I saw her live on stage she was green. ;)

And then I went up to Lincoln Center - where the Plaza was being prepared for tonight's "Sex & the City 2" movie premiere party (the premiere was at Radio City) - to attend a program of music by an "up and coming composer".  It was a good program filled with good music performed by some wonderful performers.  Alas, as what often happens at these type of events, sometimes hearing a series of songs by the same composer back-to-back for 90 minutes straight get a little ear-wearying.  -Especially when the singers are mic'd to ear-splitting levels at times. But, again, I had a good time.  -And I always get a kick out of the behavior of the "free event regulars" at Lincoln Center. ;)

And then I met up briefly with my friend, Eric, before I took a stroll up Broadway - it was another nice night out (maybe just a touch too humid).  Then my friend, Brendan, called me to tell me that he had brought back an extra cannoli for me from Little Italy, so I headed on back down to his place for dessert.

No doubts about that, Fred.  No doubts.  But it had humor, as well.  Any finale is sad...some do it with humor...and others do it with somberness.  I thought Frasier was a bit too somber for my tastes, but it all hinged on Frasier's hope,  at the end, that the character played by Laura Linney would be "the one"...and that she would be glad to see him show up on her doorstep when he was supposed to be taking a job in another city.
