Title: POETIC LICENSE

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were poetic and licensed, and now it is time for you to post until the poetic cows come home.

Last night, I went to the Washington Center's volunteer appreciation dinner.  I didn't win any door prize, but they did announce next season.  The center is celebrating its 25th anniversary season and for the big fund-raising gala, they're bringing back the very first star to play there...Ben Vereen!  The only musicals that I can remember them announcing were tours of The Color Purple and A Chorus Line.  Overall, a people were excited about the new season. :)

Loved Ben Vereen in "Grind" (and still love a half dozen or so of the songs in that score), but didn't care for him in the umpteenth revival of "Pippin" that I saw him one, one that he staged based on Fosse. He seemed to be sleepwalking in the part and, well, that sort of described the whole production. Still, when he's on, he's great to watch.

Good morning, all! I had really really weird dreams last night:
   1. rushing to meet friends on a flight to somewhere (Mexico?) and I think one of them was Jason Graae
   2. rewriting Christmas arrangements on the spot for the NYC Gay Men's Chorus which is being conducted by a stark naked Andrew Lippa (Oy!)
   3. driving God knows where and finding the Indianapolis exit is blocked so how do we drive DR JRand59 home?

Someone is wreaking havoc on my mind.

Today? More McGlinnventory. Perhaps I will find the missing music I've looked for the past two days is there?

We did another LONG scene in rehearsal last night....but now it is DONE!  A shorter rehearsal tonight....just a few pages - so many people had conflicts - and then a longer rehearsal tomorrow night.....

We lost our Irene Malloy in HELLO, DOLLY! - she hurt her back....so the new Irene is in.....and all the of the press releases and the website have to be fixed to reflect the change.....and it wasn't even the director who told me....it was the sound man - otherwise everything that went out early this morning would have been INCORRECT.

The very first show I saw on Broadway was the original PIPPIN and it was literally a life changing experience.  The whole cast was incredible.  I believe I have related that Mr. John Rubinstein went on to great acclaim as both of my nephews' soccer coach in Encino.  :)

I also loved the original production of PIPPIN.  I'm sure that between B'way and tours that I saw the show at least fifteen times (this is through only a few self-purchased tickets and mostly tagging along on school and church group trips.)

I predict that by the end of the year, a PIPPIN revival on B'way will be announced.  I'ts just about the only major show from the 70's that has yet to be brought back.

I'm up, I've approved the new master - actually, there was some big drama about it last night and I was up until two doing that.  Some real miscommunication with the mastering guy, who informed me he was leaving for Europe for ten days at ten-thirty this morning.  I knew he was doing that, but I'd told him weeks ago that before he left we had to have two projects done and he agreed.  He knew what those projects were, and yet I got ONE of them late last night - thankfully it was fine and he shipped it to the plant this morning.  I know exactly what happened - two other labels think they OWN him and shoved their projects in before mine - I told him last night that has to stop.  These guys do four to six releases a month, like gluttons.  It's ridiculous.  I do two.  And I told him from now on I will not be constantly shoved into the background - I'm giving him the announcement dates for every release for the next two months and he has to have the master done five days before that.  Otherwise, I'm looking elsewhere.

The work session for the long musical was terminated thirty minutes early when one of the collaborators went to a land I don't like and a blow up occurred.  Where we go from here is anyone's guess.  And I really don't care.  We'll see if we can come to a meeting of the minds so that this never happens again, but I'm not sure if that sort of promise is possible to make.

A month ago I asked to have no mention of my name connected to the new recording of LIFE BEGINS AT 8:40, and Tommy Krasker asked me to reconsider. I gave him all the reasons I did not want any acknowledgement and I thought it was settled peer my request, but out of the blue I received 3 copies of the CD from PS Classics today. On the front cover? "Conducted by Aaron Gandy" and "Restored by Larry Moore." Two bits of inaccurate information, and I am not happy this has occurred. My stars and planets have been in pure hell snce September and I am getting sick of it.

Hello everyone--I'm back from NYC.  Thanks for the good wishes, DR Ginny, DR Jose and DR elmore ( I hope I haven't forgotten anyone!)

On Monday, my friends and I went to the Book Expo to wait in line for our tickets to the Barbra Streisand interview.   We were there about 3 hours.  As it turns out, there wasn't as long a line as they prepared for and we could have just shown up on Tuesday and picked up our tickets.

My friend has a "hobby" in which he takes pictures of scenes from Streisand movies and tries to take them from the same vantage point as in the movie.  On Monday we went to the old train depot in Jersey City, NJ.  He wanted to take photos of the "Don't Rain on My Parade" sequence from Funny Girl.

It wasn't easy getting there!  We first took the subway to Chambers Street (I think), then the PATH to NJ, then the lightrail and then about a half hour walk!   We found out about the ferry afterwards and took that back to Manhattan.

My friend was really thrilled--he managed to recreate several scenes (without actors!)

On Monday night I saw a show called "White's Lies."  Just as a review I read described it, it's like a situation comedy without the laugh track.  It was mildly amusing and had a great cast:   Peter Scolari, Tuc Watkins and Betty Buckley.

So the big interview was yesterday at 6 pm.   We got to the Javits Center at about 11 am and were in line (in two different areas) until 4 pm or so.   Then we got to sit down and wait!

The interview was conducted by Gayle King.  Barbra's book is called "My Passion for Design."  It's about the houses she's designed over the last 15 or more years.   The fans had already heard a lot of the stories before but there were some new ones.   There was talk of color (she hates orange and yellow), mattresses (a queen size is too small , a king is too big, so Barbra has designed one that's in-between), contractors try to take advantage of her because she's wealthy (it's "reverse discrimination"), if a beam is off by 3/8 " she'll notice.   Gayle asked if she would name a favorite song--the reply was that that was a terrible question and she couldn't answer it because she "didn't want to offend the songs!"

Needless to say, there was no interaction with the audience.  The posters pointed out that there would be : "no photos, no recording devices, no autographs."

The interview lasted about an hour.   It was an interesting thing to do , but I'm not sure I would do it again (don't tell my fan-friends!).    Waiting all those hours, hearing the same stories (she had a water-bottle as a doll when she was child, she never had a couch until her mother remarried) ----and it was all over in an hour!

DR elmore and I tried to get together but it didn't work out.  I hope the next time I'm in the city, I'll be able to be part of a get-together with the New Yorkers!

Bruce:  How soon will you be irritating the crap out of he-who-shall-remain-nameless and "officially" announce the next CD?

I think I'm walking away from the project.  It's simply not worth my time anymore - the guy is such a psycho that it isn't even fun playing him.  We certainly have succeeded in showing everyone exactly what he is.  I'll probably tell the story completely in the notes in the next few days.  I'm sure he'll threaten me for doing so, but since every word will be the truth, that's just tough beans - plus, at bottom he's a coward of the highest order.  He threatens people all the time but NEVER follows through.  There is still a chance it will come via someone else, someone this guy hates even more than me.  I've convinced MGM to license it to him if I walk away and they'll be happy to - and this guy doesn't give a flying Wallenda what happens.  Just depends on if he can afford it, as he's also offered to cover the expenses I've incurred.

Evening all.  We had a bit of excitement around here just a few minutes ago.

I was sitting on the couch playing with the dogs and we heard a VERY LOUD bang!  I didn't know what it was but it seemed to come from the back of the house.

Turns out the tree from next store fell into my yard.  Thank God no one human or animal got hurt and both houses are ok.  The best possible outcome for a fallen tree.  The only real damage is the fence but I already spoke with the folks next door and we will get everything fixed this weekend.

My only worry is what I'm going to do about the dogs for the next couple of days.  I hate to lock them up in the house.  I have the cage but I hate to lock them up there either but I guess I should feel glad that I have someplace safe to keep them for this short time.

I'm just more glad then words can say that no one got hurt.  That's the main thing.  I'm also very glad nothing happened to the house.  I really couldn't take that right now.

At least that gets that tree out of the way before hurricane season starts.  :)

Title: Re: POETIC LICENSE

Can you believe that is the 4th tree that has fallen from that yard over the years?  3 in my yard and one last summer to back.  I don't remember if I posted about that.  I had the dog cage under that tree and had it fallen in my yard it would have been crushed.

On the bright side, that is the last of the trees on my side of the yard.  I'm afraid there are several on the other side and one has started to lean.

I don't know the name of the tree but it grows like a weed and if you scratch it, it bleeds a white kinda milk.  The leaves can also make you very itchy.  Mulberry tree?  I think that might be the name.

Maybe.   I seem to remember someone (can't even remember who) calling it one.  Maybe they were wrong.  I honestly thought mulberry was a fruit you can eat and I know there was nothing like that on this type of tree.

T.O.D.

If one of us was coming to L. A. for just one day, where would you take them for their one L.A. dinner?

As Jane said - most likely Musso and Frank - if not, Genghis Cohen for sure.

I guess I am unfamiliar with Musso and Frank.  I expected you to say Genghis Cohen.

You're unfamiliar with Musso and Frank?  Umm... Looks like you might have some essplaining to do. ;)

I have been to a doctor's office and had a carbuncle removed.  Unfortunately, that carbuncle was in a very sensitive area, and now that the local anesthetic has worn off, I know that I will not be wearing pants for a while. . .

I'm watching "Doctor Who."  I've just watched two episodes and have started a third.  After that, I'll have one left...then I'm all caught up with "Doctor Who."

Just had to share. :)
