Title: LIPOSUCTION

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a tummy-tuck, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently having the fat sucked out of them.

Best dance number? That's hard. But I have a special spot reserved for three numbers I saw during my first visit to New York. I was able to see three shows that weekend, and the numbers in order of when I saw them would be:

1. The title number from "42nd Street" with Leroy Reams and replacement Lisa Brown and the entire cast tapping up a frenzy.

2. Anita Morris in "A Call from the Vatican" in "Nine." She was fearless as a performer and the dance was a wonder to behold.

3. Tommy Tune and Charles "Honi" Coles messing around in "My One and Only." The show was still in previews, but the two of them seemed to be having a great time just showing each other what they could do.

On film, it's the "Dancing in the Dark" sequence in "The Band Wagon." I play that scene over and over again. The elegance and natural grace both Astaire and Charisse display makes me want to put the DVD on again. Minnelli's color sheme for the scene is also perfect. And I love the orchestration.

Title: Re: LIPOSUCTION
Post by: elmore3003 on June 03, 2010, 04:19:43 AM
Good morning, all! I have another McGlinnventory day, followed by some work at Toyland. After that, I am back here to proof the Act Two Opening Chorus of Mr Victor Herbert's exotic THE ROSE OF ALGERIA. I believe all that's left is the Act One opening chorus.  As soon as the music arrives I can finish this project and send it off. Now I want to hear this piece from 1908: it's about a French Foreign Legion officer who's in love with Zoradie, the ruler of a desert tribe, so the men's chorus is primarily foreign legionnaires, but the cast also includes Millicent, a lady doctor and her chorus of nurses, a young American couple on their honeymoon, some deserters for comic relief, and I think it's the perfect summer show for DR JRand59 to direct in Indiana.

DR Jose, yes, I know Kelly Rippa is in the commercials, too. She basically acts as the vocie of reason to Mr Philbin's stupidity in those TD Bank commercials. I really do loathe them. So, DRs, what tv commercials currently running do you like and dislike? I love the Serta Sheep and some of the Geiko ones. I miss the mini-musicals that eBay used to broadcast.

I've also been catching previews for the new MARMADUKE film and wondering, who else besides Michael Barnum is going to this?

I have only cereal in this place for breakfast unless I muster up the energy to boil or fry an egg. Hmmm . . .

As for the TOD, the first spectacular dance I remember is the "Waiter's Galop" in the national company of HELLO DOLLY! with Mary Martin. A really spectacular dance in CAMELOT might have helped that show out, but Hanya Holm's work I have pretty much forgotten. Following that:
"The Red Rose Cotillion" choreographed by Agnes deMille for WHERE's CHARLEY?
"The Telephone song" choreographed by Ron Field for CABARET
"You Can Dance With Any Girl" choreographed by Donald Saddler in NO NO NANETTE
"Turkey Lurkey Time" choreographed by Michael Bennett in PROMISES PROMISES
"The Mack Sennett Ballet" from HIGH BUTTON SHOES reproduced in JEROME ROBBINS BROADWAY
"On Your Toes" choreographed by Donald Saddler and Peter Martins(?) from the revival ON YOUR TOES

Speaking of Agnes deMille, I've been lucky to see her work reproduced in two productions of CAROUSEL, OKLAHOMA! in its 1980 revival, and BRIGADOON at City Opera. Mighty fine!

I know that ROYAL PAINS starts in the US tonight. I am still trying to find out when it starts here. But the website for the channel that runs it is no help. I guess they don't really want people watching it.  My best guess is next friday.

I would like to thank all the little people for my nomination for a Portland Musical Theater Award for The Producers.  My chances of winning are zilch, but I was very surprised to even be nominated.  I am not exactly a shy, retiring Musical Director and producers and directors seem to be surprised that a "mere" musician (or electrician--a BK/Carol Channing reference) would deign to stand up to them.  ;)

The other completely inexplicable thing is the lack of nominations for any of our performers--a complete travesty, IMHO.

DR JOHN G - a DVD of DOCTOR ATOMIC from the Netherlands - with a lot of the cast that also did the Met production - is the only one available that I can find.

I've also been catching previews for the new MARMADUKE film and wondering, who else besides Michael Barnum is going to this?

A film of MARMADUKE is a baffling curiosity that must be filed under WHO EVER THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA.  It has to be one of the most pointless comic strips ever.  It's one punchline usually consists of some variation of "Oh, that Marmaduke!"  It's right up there with HENRY, THE LITTLE KING, and NANCY as one of the all-time worst comic strips ever.  I guess we can look forward to cinematic adaptations of these next.  Doesn't anyone remember the film of DONDI?

I think the first Millenium movie is now out in the US, THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. I can't remember if i mentioned this but the 3rd movie is now playing here in French. I'll see it on dvd but after i've read the 3rd book.

Interestingly, yesterday i think i heard Regis talking about seeing the first movie. I think he liked it. But there were 2 interesting points he made.

1. he liked the actors because he thought they looked like real people as opposed to most actors in US movies.

I totally get what he's saying. Because most of the actors we see are stunningly beautiful people. And in the Millenium movies they have pock marks on their skin and look worse that most people!

2. he remarked about the violence.

I mentioned this when i originally saw the first movie in french a few months ago. It's weird because there is violence in the books. but it is just not the same as when you see it on film. I also found the first movie extremely violent and that was my biggest complaint. It was such a good movie. But there was so much very graphic scenes. And watching people get raped or attacked is very hard for me to watch.

USATODAY (http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2010-06-01-California-Arizona_N.htm?csp=34news)

Quote
Calif. county boycotts Arizona over immigration law

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles County on Tuesday became the latest government body to boycott Arizona to protest the state's tough new law targeting illegal immigration.

So, naturally, those supportive of AZ will counter-boycott LA businesses.

Kritzerland - at the hub of inter-state warfare!

der Brucer

Here is how this is supposed to work:

We boycott Kritzerland (for being part of the offending county of LA).

The owner of Kritzerland, fearing his livelihood is in jeopardy, will command the LA County Board of Supervisors to cancel their boycott of AZ.

The Board of Supervisors, aware of their responsibililty as the voice of the people, will harken unto Kritzerland, and call off the boycott.

Representative politics in action!!!

...Alice In Wonderland...

It would have been better titled as "Alice Returns To Wonderland" beacuse it is definitely not a retelling of the original story. If you put your memories of Disney and the Carol original on hold, the film is a fun trip.

PS It might not be the best for a pre-schooler.

Yes, It's too bad some folks could not see past the kick-ass violence or the eco/politico themes to see the heart of the tale, or enjoy the spectacular visuals.

Note to potential offense-takers, I have no particular "some folks" in mind!

Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell in Broadway Melody Of 1940 Doing BEGIN THE BEGUINE. Frank Sinatra mentioned in That's Entertainment that " You can wait around and hope, but you'll never see the likes of this again" I truly believe that statement. It's A Once In A Lifetime Moment.

Tummy tuck definition: "Also known as abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck removes excess fat and skin, and in most cases restores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer." I believe this is commonly done for women who have given birth, and after their bellies have been stretched out so far, there's a lot of excess skin that doesn't completely snap back into the shape it was before pregnancy.

Folks on the dog groomers bulletin board are already groaning about how many people are going to run out and buy great dane puppies, due to the "Marmaduke" movie, and then they'll all end up in animal shelters when the cuteness stage passes, and people realize how much effort is in involved in owning such a large powerful breed.

This may seem trite but the dance number I absolutely love is from "The Jacksons: An American Dream." It's the scene at the very end of the movie where they're on the Victory tour and all six brothers do a choreographed number to "The Love You Save". I've watched it over and over. I don't know if it's my favorite, but I've sure seen it the most.

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700035664/Shore-gave-up-fame-for-family.html

I met Roberta Shore one time at Disneyland.  I was probably all of twelve.  I even got her autograph, which I think she signed on one of my "A" tickets.  I knew I would never use up those tickets

I actually saw DONDI at the drive-in.

Are these paintings how Charles and Ruth figure out that the house is haunted?

I got AVATAR from the library. And I actually liked it a lot better than i thought I would.

It was really long. But I wasn't expecting such a sweet love story.

We felt the same way.  We enjoyed it very much & found it beautiful to watch.  In the comfort of our home it didn't feel too long.

After we got our first big dog (really a medium sized dog compared to Sherlock) we would cut out the Marmaduke cartoons & put them on our frig.  Eventually they just seemed to duplicate themselves.  I cannot image an entire movie based on the snippets.

On the other hand, they made a serviceable film out of "Scrappy Doo", so "Marmaduke" was an inevitability.

I couldn't watch Scrappy Doo ;D

My library just got a bunch of new movies that I"m wondering if anyone else has seen.

The ones i have reserved and should be getting in the next week or two are: It's Complicated, Leap Year, Extraordinary Measures, Dear John.

Others that I can get later if i want them: Invictus, Alice In Wonderland, Tha Road, Crazy on the OUtside.

I also have the Young Victoria to watch sometime in the next few days.

Can't help you.  We have 'It's Complicated" waiting to be watched & "Invictus" in our Netflix queue-that's it.

By the end of July I hope to have an opinion on "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"

Representative politics in action!!!

der Brucer

;D  On FB I've seen pleas not to boycott as only the "little people" are losing jobs, such as in the hotel business.  To balance things out others are buying Arizona products on line.

Back from the rest of my errands.  I had to get a new battery for the iPhone - turns out they don't do new batteries, they just give you a new phone.  So, I got a new 3G, but I also upgraded to the new 3GS which, for reasons unknown, was $100 less than it usually is - so the new phone cost only 97 bucks - pretty amazing.  And a friend wanted my old one, and they're paying me fifty bucks, so net cost around forty-seven bucks.

I will say that the 3GS is hugely faster in navigation.  Unfortunately, my last computer save was in April, so all the apps loaded post April weren't there, but I found them all (all free) and got them back.  And I got one new app the Apple guy told me about - a car navigation app that speaks to you just like a GPS.  Pretty cool.  Taking a long time to download but I'm really happy to have it.

When we had a major league baseball team here I was a really big fan.

This is an interesting ending to a rather upsetting turn of events yesterday.

A pitcher was one out away from a perfect game. And the ump made a bad call, which was huge.

The ump feels terrible. But I am very impressed with how the pitcher is handling it. You would think he would be crushed. But wow he is really being great about it.

Wow, the preview for the GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO is sort of misleading. I'm assuming the movie is in Swedish with English subtitles? But the preview does not make any mention of this. To me this is sort of a big thing.

Actually come to think of it I wonder how the movies will play in Swedish. I saw them in French. I wonder why they didn't dub it in English?

I went to IMBD to see if the American version is in production yet.   So far all the stars are only rumored, and guess who is rumored to play Mikael-yup, Brad Pitt.  ::)

I've been watching this.  Maybe now they will finally begin using instant replay for close calls.

It's heartbreaking for the pitcher.

The thing is if the ump knew he made the wrong call. I wonder if it was only after he saw the replay.

I get why they don't want to have instand replays. The games would take forever. But they could do it so each team is allowed 2 or 3 a game.

What an actor looks like off screen can be very different once they become the character.   I found Harrison Ford incredibly sexy in Star Wars & Indiana Jones.  When I watched him do interviews he lost his appeal.

My bad--our Ulla did get a nomination.  But our Roger and Carman (at the very least) should have, too.

Congrats JMK...and to your Ulla!

Yes, that is why I meant to write limited instant replay.  It is only available on home run calls.

DR Jane, I found Lisbeth to actually be fairly petite. Unless you have an exact height in your head i don't think you will have a problem with her.  Obviously she can't be identical to everything they wrote in the books. But i found her to be quite close.

The Baseball commissioner has the power to overturn the call.  You'd think this is one instance where it would be the right thing to do. The ump says he got it wrong, everyone says he got it wrong, why not do the right thing and give the pitcher his perfect game

Things that worked Tuesday don't work today.  Things that worked this morning don't work this afternoon.  They had to kick everyone out of it and reboot.  I was only able to create an order because the items that I need to order are already in the system.  When I changed a title in the system, it didn't reindex automatically.  You can only search it by the old title, but when the item comes up, it has all the information for the changes that I made.  WEIRD!!

Yesterday, I went for a bike ride in Central Park. Not only was it my first bike ride in Central Park, but it was also my first time on a (non-stationary) bike in over 20 years. -I'm guessing in 23-24 years.

My friend, Michael, had mentioned a few months ago that I could borrow his bike whenever he was not using it - he spends a lot of time out of town for work - and after joking with a friend earlier in the day about biking to Chicago, I asked Michael if I could take his bicycle out for a spin.  It turned out that he was working near Columbus Circle and had biked to work, so it was already parked and locked near Central Park.  So...

I did have a slight case of the jitters as soon as I picked up both feet from the ground and placed them on the pedals, but then I just started wheeling along and smiling and giggling. I really did not forget how to ride a bike! I started off with two loops of the lower bridle path, then took a small break - mainly to text Michael a big "THANK YOU!".  -Then I took bigger loop heading up to the Reservoir than back across.  I basically "looped" the lower half of the Park.  And coupled with yesterday's gorgeous weather, well.. It really was an amazing way to spend the afternoon.

Another Astaire-Rogers favorite is from "The Barkleys of Broadway."

Actually, it was nominally a throwaway number as it was danced under the main title and film credits at the start of the picture.

The Swing Trot   (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKA7hv-etqQ), with the credits removed!

Well, I'm off to my parents' house to visit with my aunt.

Be back later!

Don't forget your toolbox.

der Brucer

Fortunately, it was not needed.  I called after I left work and it turns out that my mom and aunt went to the casino, so no visit tonight.  Tomorrow, we're all going to my sister's house for tacos...and no tools will be needed, either. :D

My nephew Daniel got the results of his tests today and it is not very good. He has Acute Myelogenous Leukemia and my brother Dan, Daniel's dad, says that there is a 50 percent chance of survival.

Poor Dan. He is only 24 and has two small kids. He will be heading up the Oregon Health Services University in a few day to begin treatment.

~~~SUPER VIBES FOR MBARNUM'S NEPHEW DANIEL!!~~~
