Most interesting to read of the NYMF brouhaha.....of course so MANY of these shows don't go anywhere, so they are trying to get as much money as possible NOW....and if a show does have an afterlife like say...oh.....BRAIN FROM PLANET X......it's a cash cow.......outrageous!

Last night DR Jane was writing about THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO

Quote
She is supposed to be really small & look like a teenager

Well you can see her for yourself in the clip.

I guess each person has their own versions of Lisbeth in their head when they read the book.  To me she had to be petite and look youngish. And she does fit that for me.  She is slender and i could believe that she was around 20ish.

Friday morning greetings!  I've been to the dermatologist for a minor procedure this morning and have a few hours to putter until I have to take my mother to the orthopedist for a follow-up about her back.  The funniest thing about my visit to the derm. was the work phone number they had on file for me - it was for my faculty office at Miami Univ. in Oxford.  That's the job I left in 1997 to go to work for Dayton Metro Library.  No wonder they thought I was a new patient!

It's looking like i will get unemployment insurance after all.  What i don't know is whether Unemployment made that decision overruling what the company was trying to argue, or the company withdrew what it was trying to say.

Once I have paper in hand from Labor, I'll be sure.  i heard it's being mailed to someone (could be me or them or both, I'm  not 100% sure) today.

This is nice news, but like getting the actual earned money that was due me to begin with, feels like having to "work" to get something I shouldn't have had to actually fight for - so i tend not to see this as a "win" - just an aversion of what would have been an unfair "loss."

I have heard multiple times how good the actress playing Lisbeth is even if she is too tall.

From JohnG:
Quote
She really was quite wonderful in the part, and the director does his best to make her seem shorter than the actress is in real life.

Thank you for the tidbit regarding the director.  Filming the movies all at once should keep her looking young too. :)

I don't know that i've ever really seen that much dubbing.  I just feel like Swedish would be a very hard language to listen to. I found the french dubbing perfectly fine and didn't have any problems with it.

If you had asked me before watching the MILLENIUM movies dubbed in french i probably would have said the same thing. But you could hardly notice that they were dubbed.

And i did watch the dvd in swedish with french subtitles for a few minutes and found it much harder to follow. Swedish is extremely foreign sounding to me. And i don't understand any of it. Now maybe Swedish with English subtitles would have been easier for me. But i really loved watching the movie dubbed. And i wonder why the dvd in the US would not have English dubbing as an option.

Here the dvd is either french with french subtitles or Swedish with french subtitles.

Yes, I think audiences are happier with the subtitles.

I remember being stuck in Costa Rica while the airport in Miami was closed because of a hurricane and I couldn't get home. So, I went to the movies and saw "Jefferson in Paris." The French portion was subtitled only in Spanish and I had to work hard with both to figure out what they were saying.

I've put away my laundry, finished editing the Opening of Act Two, written about The Lady of the Slipper, and now I'm thinking about resting in front of the tv.

I'm glad they caught that Dutch creep, who appears to be a budding serial killer. I don't think his wealthy family can get him out of the current mess, and that's probably all the best for humanity, if not for the Holloway family.

As to dubbed films, I have no problems with singers being dubbed, but I want to hear the actor speak his/her own lines and not listen to another actor dub them for him. I do wish that on earlier foreign films we'd get new unexpurgated translations. Both THE BAKER'S WIFE and CARNIVAL IN FLANDERS suffer from 1930s American puritanism.

I think with two murders he is past the "budding" stage.

That is interesting that DR JohnG wrote that he believes american audiences would not buy THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO if it was dubbed in English.

So they will be happier to have a Swedish movie with English subtitlees?

I haven't seen many dubbed movies. But both of these films were dubbed in French here. And i liked it that way fine. Better I think than if i was watching it in Swedish with subtitles.
Yes, I think audiences are happier with the subtitles.

I disagree. The preview does not show any indication of this being a Swedish film with subtitles. I wonder how many people going to the movie will have no idea.

I don't think Swedish is a language most people would have any understanding of. So i think it would make it much more difficult to watch.

Maybe it depends what you go in expecting. But the french dub is so right on that you think you're watching a french film.

I wonder if they dub better in French ;)  Hey, Keith is agreement with you about the dubbing, if it is done well.  Sometimes it is almost impossible to read subtitles.  I like when an actor can do their own dubbing.

The preview didn't really show much of anything, just lots of action-lol.

It was nice to see ROYAL PAINS again & overall I enjoyed it.  I didn't find it exceptional.  I had major problems with the medical advice in the beginning & middle of the show which was frustrating & distracting.  I really haven't a clue about later on.

It felt good to see BURN NOTICE again even though I also had a few issues with the script. ;D

I don't think 911 calls should be released to the public. People call 911 when they are under great stress. It should not be used for entertainment purposes.

I find it easier to read subtitles if I have no idea what they are saying.  When I know the language, I tend to notice the differences between what I think they are saying and what the subtitle says rather than just going with the story
