Title: ATTACK OF THE JUNEBUGS
Post by: bk on June 05, 2010, 11:55:20 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes attacked the attack of the Junebugs, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently being attacked by the Junebugs.

Crap...I couldn't select a different input while recording (even paused), so I switched the wires from the VCR to the DVR.  While the video taped version has gray bars on the sides because of my widescreen TV, the rest of the picture fills the screen:

The black-and-white version that I recorded on TV is in hi-def and the picture is window-boxed:

This has black bars all around the picture.  The two different versions don't match. :P

Something is amiss with the hi-def image.  I have the Blu-Ray - there should only be bars on the sides.

Something is amiss with the hi-def image.  I have the Blu-Ray - there should only be bars on the sides.

When I play it directly to my TV, everything is fine, but I'm recording it to my standard-def DVD burner.  That takes the entire widescreen image and fits it into a 4:3 size.

Post by: George on June 06, 2010, 12:17:57 AM
I didn't think about that when I recorded the show from TV.  If I'd recorded the standard-def TV broadcast or if I had a black-and-white videotape, it would fill the screen when I recorded the show to my DVD burner.

Back from various and sundried errands and whatnot - with more to come, and lunch, too.  I delivered all the Promises materials to the designer, added a few things to the liner notes, cut a few things, and those are now done and sent.

I am really looking forward to that release!

DITTO!! ;D

Except for the music, which was terrific, I thought that MAMMY was a bore.

Almost every important event takes place off-screen

Even Michael Curtiz couldn't save that script.

My wife and I watched CAMELOT last night, the movie with Richard Harris and Vanessa Redgrave.

Wonderful Lerner/Lowe score, but the movie is a mess.

Joshua Logan may have been a magnificent stage director, but God did not intend for him be a movie director.

One of my favorite scenes in the movie, "CAMELOT" is "How to Handle A Woman."  Richard Harris sings the entire song with a big old Band-Aid on the side of his neck.    I know they didn't have Band-Aids then, so I figured it must have been of some of Merlin's doing.

I am looking forward to the arrival of BOY & THE PIRATES with the Puppet Suite!

Thanks for the DDD code, DR JMK.  As DR JMK posted yesterday 25MORE as a code will get you 25% off MANY things at the DDD site.

Yes indeed, I shall see Ibsen's GHOSTS today......well Ibsen's play GHOSTS.....  Many of those involved in this production at Buck Creek Players (where we saw BRAINEX Indiana style with MR BK and DR CP and EVIL KURT) - were also involved with the first production of the play what I wrote MY HAND IS NOT MY HEART at the Phoenix Theatre.....25 years ago this very summer!

I haven't seen many of them in a long time, so it will be lovely to see them again.....I think.

It's about syphilis, ya know!

I only mention this because I saw the play several years ago with Amy Irving as the older lady (Mrs Alving? Is that her name?), and the mention of syphilis is so oblique that if I hadn't known it going in, I wouldn't know it to this day. I have to say, I've always thought Ibsen, unlike Chekhov, needed a play doctor.

Good morning, all! Today I am finishing the last number from THE ROSE OF ALGERIA, and I have some work to do on the Main Editorial Report for BABES IN TOYLAND. Just when you think it's safe to go back into the ocean . . .

I have no other plans today beyond accomplishing these two things. I will sit here in the AC and listen to some wonderful things. Exactly what has yet to be determined. Maybe even a Wagner opera, like LOHENGRIN or TANNHAUSER. I can listen with enjoyment to a 4-hour opera, I just can't stand to sit through a performance. I still haven't figured it out, but, to me, 4 hours of Wagner or Richard Strauss in the opera house is like 4000 hours of hell, but 3 to 4 hours of Mozart or Bizet is like 4 minutes of true pleasure.

Maybe it's the fact that nothng happens onstage in Wagner and Strauss: they bellow for fifteen minutes and someone moves, then another bellows for twenty minutes and someone slugs him, then the slugger bellows for ten minutes and nothing still happens.
Tristan gave his heart to Isolde in song
          I blush
Oh, dear, but the song was six hours long
          I blush
What they did was wrong without a doubt
If it took so long to sing about
But the thought can make my lily cheek to flush
          I blush
Oh, dear, how they yodeled of love and death
          I blush
They died, not from love but from lack of breath!

I mentioned this years ago on RATM (does anyone still RATM?--well, probably one person does, LOL) when someone said how much the Intel musical "logo" sounded like "I had a dream" from GYPSY.  The musical "logo" of Windows is the opening three notes of GUINEVERE from CAMELOT.

We are always doing "our favorite this" or "our favorte that"; so today why not try something else?

What is the absolute worst film that ever starred Paul Newman?   (No fair saying SILVER CHALICE, just because he always said that it was his worst film)

OR

What film does the world consider to be an all-time classic; that you secretly have always hated?

Well, that is two choices.

It sure is! Even as a kid I knew it when I saw the national tour in Cincinnati in 1964 or 65. It was great to look at and completely sexless for a musical about adultery. Lerner tried to fix the show with the London version and some of that rewrite is in the film, along with the same designer. I just gave a friend the program from the Toronto tryout, and now I want to hear the two big cut numbers, "The Quests," which happened before Lancelot's knighting and involved several knights and a lot of other folk, and Guinevere's "Face To Face," which followed and appears to be in the same spot as "Before I Gaze At You Again," which is not yet in the show.

I need a new CD player. Damn.

Back from a three-mile jog.  Helper asked if we could do tomorrow instead of today - luckily the morning is free, but this is going to stop as of tomorrow.  She cancelled Friday, assured me it would be today.  But this morning she informed me she'd been up till four in the morning playing, and was not feeling well.  I need just a bit more responsibility than that - if you know you're working at ten, don't play until four.

DR Jane, i just found the most interesting tv related column at tvguide.ca. You can ask questions re: tv programming in canada. And since it is quite difficult to find out information (about when certain shows are airing). I think it is easier for her to find out.

She was the one who said Royal Pains was supposed to start here last friday. But it was not on the schedule. And their website only updates things per week. So she contacted them. And they said that season 2 will air they are just not sure exactly when (it will be this summer).

But there are other US shows that are on networks that we don't get in Canada. Like Hawthorne. White Collar. Saving Grace. Top Chef. It would be nice if each channel (in canada) would update the shows on their website. But they don't until they are actually on the air.  So maybe this girl (amber) will have more luck than me!

I'm curious how many minutes of previews you guys have before movies.

Here they show commercials. Then previews. Then the movie.

But when i went to SATC2 the movie did not come on for 20 minutes. Who wants to sit thru 20 minutes of commercials and then previews.

I am good for 3 previews. But I hate to have to sit for 20 minutes. I'd rather they played the commercials BEFORE the start time.

I have mentioned this before (what else is new?), but I grew up with and went to school with Robert Peterson's son.  Peterson was Goulet's understudy during the entire run of CAMELOT and actually played more performances than Goulet.  He later played Arthur at Pioneer Memorial Theater in SLC when I was a kid.  That was my first time seeing the stage musical.  I thought Act I would never end.  :)  IIRC, Act I ran for almost 2 hours, and Act II was another 90 minutes.  Tooooo long, IMHO.

Very true, JMK.  Even with quality actors the show just goes on and on.  And sitting thru community theater performances of CAMELOT can be a complete nightmare.

Sunday afternoon greetings!

Heard about some bad tornadoes in Ohio. Hope Dear Ginny and Richard (and affiliated family) are OK.

Yes, DR Ben, we're fine - thanks for asking.  Last night's storms, as DR JRand mentioned, were up north.  The Lima folks said they had watches and warnings and DS Rob called from Michigan to say that they'd had tornado warnings but were OK.  Hope it didn't put too much of a damper on the graduation party.  We expect him home this evening, so guess we'll hear all about it.

We are always doing "our favorite this" or "our favorte that"; so today why not try something else?

What film does the world consider to be an all-time classic; that you secretly have always hated?

An American in Paris.

Rocky.

Forrest Gump.

Matt H. is no longer here so I can say this (although I know other people on this board love the movie as well)

Lord of the Rings.

I don't know enough Paul Newman films to say which one is the worst. I've seen Paul Newman films just not a lot of them

I liked a lot of SATC 2, although three plot points in the Middle East really bothered me for being out of character and a lot of nonsense that could have been cut. I do think that DR MBarnum should see it for his paper on the influence of Bollywood on the American film, since this is the first movie I've seen that reminded me again and agan of a Bollywood comedy, from the length to the production numbers.

It has been awhile since I've gone to a movie.  Can't swear to it, but it sure felt like twenty minutes of commercials and previews before the movie began. :(

I hope this will be more helpful for you in the future.  I must of missed something, you didn't get Royal Pains at all?  I thought you simply hadn't watched it yet.

We used six towels, three on the floor, two to partially dry him, & one I hung on the towel rack to absorb some of the water when he shakes.  I then use the hanging towel to wipe the walls down.  Keith takes Sherlock outside & blasts him with a professional dog blower that blows most of the water out of him.

No we didn't get season 2 yet. The channel that aired season 1 (citytv) is definitely going to air it. And when this girl from tvguide canada and questioned citytv she thought it was going to start last friday. But i checked their schedule and emailed her. And she said they are going to show it but they now have not set an exact date.

But since they have fall programming set in stone they will have to air it this summer. It's just a matter of them putting it in their schedule. Maybe in a couple of week.s :(

We get Top chef, top chef masters, the next food network star on Food network canada.

We get White collar on bravo canada.

The only problem is that sometimes these canadian stations do not air the shows at the same as in the US. Sometimes they do. And sometimes we are off by a few days or weeks.  But they don't make their schedules in advance it seems.

Then you don't get cable?  Do you pay extra for any viewing?  We have to pay for a service as the regular stations have lousy reception.  PPS only comes to us through regular programing while other areas in the country get HD PPS.   We opt not to pay extra for Showtime or HBO, paying extra for PPS is not an option.

Has anyone here tried those Nature Valley Granola Nut Clusters?  I am hooked on the cashew variety, although they also have peanut, almond, or Nut Lovers.

Nope.  They sound fattening ;)

According to the Nutrition Facts, the serving size is 8 clusters for a total of 150 calories.

I just grilled cheddar burgers - we ran out of gas but fortunatelyl not until the burgers were nearly done - by keeping the barbeque closed it retained enough heat to finish them off

we also has corn on the cob and baked beans

We are always doing "our favorite this" or "our favorte that"; so today why not try something else?

What is the absolute worst film that ever starred Paul Newman?   (No fair saying SILVER CHALICE, just because he always said that it was his worst film)

OR

What film does the world consider to be an all-time classic; that you secretly have always hated?

Well, that is two choices.

a. Can't think of the one word title, but it's a futuristic film he made for Robert Altman.

b. OUT OF AFRICA

Now this sounds excellent.  I haven't made onion dip in ages.  I used to buy eight ounces of sour cream, make the dip, and get low fat potato chips and have the whole thing as my meal.

Nobody wants to chime in on the two questions of the day that I asked?

Everyone seems to think it is a classic, but I detested LITTLE BIG MAN. I was a kid when I saw it and found it disturbing. I have never bothered to try and watch it again.

Today, all the visiting family came to my place to check it out.  I gave a tour and they all liked it...not that it would matter if they didn't. ;) We sat around for a while just chatting, and then my dad and aunt (his sister) went home.  My cousin and his wife, along with my sister, niece and I all went to a local bakery just a few blocks from my sister's house for a quick lunch.  My niece and then I left to go to a Seattle Storm women's basketball game and the Storm won!  They got in the lead very quickly and at one point, were 35, count 'em 35 points ahead!  The visiting team narrowed the gap a bit, but never got ahead and the Storm won by 24 points.  It was a very good game. :D

I like the movie Camelot better than seeing it on stage

Camelot was the first (and so far, only) show that I didn't really know before I performed in it...and didn't really like after I performed in it.  I like just about everything else that I've been in, except for Camelot.  I certainly loved being in the show and I'm still friends with some of the people that I met doing it.  I mean, the show okay and I certainly like other Lerner and Loewe shows (Brigadoon was the very first musical that I performed in and has a special place in my heart ;)), but I just don't care for Camelot.
