Title: I, PAD

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were technological and had pad, and now it is time for you to post until the technological cows come home.

TOD: I'm often accused of being a Luddite because I refuse to get a cell phone and I don't TiVO (or watch TV), have a DVR, an iPad, an e-reader or too many gadgets outside of the computer that were designed to make my life complete.

I thankfully feel more complete without all of the above, so my answer - at least this early in the morning - would likely be my KitchenAid mixer and/or my food processor, both of which help immeasurably in the kitchen. The heat here in San Antonio is climbing above 90 most every day now, so you might want to throw in the ice cream maker, too.

I'm sure there's something else to go on the list, but I can't think of it right now.

Good morning, all! I awoke at 5:30 and decided to get out of bed at 6, rather than wait for the 6:30 alarm. This morning is another McGlinnventory day, followed by a quick trip to Toyland. We were informed yesterday that the Master Toymaker has renewed our lease so that bodes something positive, i believe.

After my very brief sojourn in Toyland, I will head to the NYPL and continue work on the libretto for THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER. At 6:30, I meet my friend Chris for dinner, and that's my day.

John, I like your post. I am not remotely a Luddite but I get looks like "how can you survive" when I tell people we don't have cable or a DVR. I have and use a computer every day but that doesn't mean I need or want to be connected every minute of every day. The iPad is just another electronic device for me. I don't need my life changed by an electronic slab. I've lived 57 years without one and I think I can live another 30 or so the same way.

TOD: The personal computer & the internet - as opposed to Univac.

I have been connected since 1998 and if has indeed changed my life....mostly for the better.

Second would be the VCR/DVD - I can watch anything I want - anytime I want - I am no longer at the mercy of the television programmers.

Third - cable/satellite television.

TOD:

Number One for me is definitely the development of the personal computer and self-contained operating system software, especially in regard to my line of work in programming.  The difference in time and effort and frustration between the tasks I had to perform years ago just to run an initial test on a module of a program and the ease and immediacy with which I can whip up a web application today is incredible.

I am also pondering the Ipad.  It's tempting, but like BK says, it really doesn't do much more than an iPhone or the iTouch does.  I suppose the size helps with readabilty but if comes to that I have my laptop or desktop.  If it had a robust Office-type app in which one would write full documents with ease, I think I would jump at it more readily (I think there is a bluetooth external keyboard accessory.)  But for now, it's a toy...

TOD: computers and the internet.

Things I am particularly fond of: air conditioning, dishwashers, my simple cell phone, self-cleaning ovens

I would like the self-cleaning refrigerator that Betsy has.

TOD:  I have to go along with most:  Computer and internet.  I would have gotten many more constructive things done the last fifteen years; if it hadn't been for the allure of the internet.
Title: Re: I, PAD
Post by: MBarnum on June 08, 2010, 07:49:28 AM
Definitely the computer and internet.

The DVR machine, which changed the way I watch television. No having to set the timer each week to program my favorite series. Just a click and every episode is set to record. Watching a show live and missed something? Just hit reverse and see/hear what you missed. And burning a show or movie to DVDr is so easy!

The cell phone: although I rarely use it, it is very handy when out and about and you need to reach someone or they need to reach you.

The telephone answering machine/voice mail.

Tuesday morning greetings!  I slept in 'til 9am today and will soon start on a furniture project that will rid our household of my old Cleopatra couch and make room for a new (to us) blue loveseat.  This maneuver requires moving a bookcase from the living room to Richard's study area and sliding the piano about a foot toward the dining room.  Something tells me I'll be churning up a lot of dust in the next couple of days.

TOD:  Not that I've had it...but have had several acquaintances who did...I think the greatest technological advance, thus far, in my lifetime, is the non-invasive surgical procedure for repairing arteries...inserting a probe in a vein in the groin area and being able to insert stints to bypass weakened arteries all through the body, including the heart and the brain.

TOD:  If I must select an electronics device that is a technological wonder of my lifetime, I'll have to say I'm torn -- oh, yes! I am torn -- between computer disc technology (CD & DVD) and digital/hi-def video.

DR CILLA LIZ - one day in the last century, a group of friends and stopped at a red light at 52nd Street and Keystone.

A pickup truck got the green light....he pulled away in a great hurry.  Setting in the back of a truck was a LARGE console television set - wood cabinet....you remember what they were like......well the truck went, and because the television was on the very BACK of the truck and the tailgate was down....WELL......there was a big television face down in the intersection.
CRASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL, JRand.  Was it you?

Luckily last night is there was no one around except a couple of people sitting in a doorway.  One car came by while I was standing in the middle of the road laughing like crazy and moving the boards out of the way.  Mind you this was right out in front of the courthouse and the jail/sheriff's office. Pretty funny place to decide to drag.  It's all one way around there so he had to go around a couple blocks to get back to where we started.

I will say he totally left me in the dust so I loved that he had to come back to pick up his cargo. It was like I hadn't even put my foot on the accelerator and he was down the block with the boards a 1/2 block behind him.

I was only an interested bystander, DR CILLA LIZ....the television was not mine....thanks goodness.

However I did leave home in a Toyota pickup truck one morning and arrived at my destination without the Camper Shell that was on the bed.....it was dark and I never felt or heard a thing.

A drive back saw nothing beside the road......didn't notice it until I started to back into my parking space and thought "Wow, I sure can see a lot back there, usually it's DARK!"

I am convinced it was the Mysterians that took my camper shell up into their spaceship.

For a long time, I believed the technological advance that altered my life the most was the ATM machine. Actually, I'm too young to have ever been inconvenied by rushing out in the middle of work to withdraw cash from a bank before they all closed at 2:00 pm. But I remember family members complaining about it, and I was so glad that I was born just in the right year that I would never have to deal with such an inconvenience. I do remember asking my Dad why all banks closed at 2:00 pm and he had no idea, but he could tell me that's where the expression "bankers hours" came from. The irony now is that I almost never go to a bank because I pay for everything with debit or credit cards, which are virtually accepted everywhere now. So, I would say the second technological advance that altered my life is debit cards. I never carry cash anymore. I have a really weird fat wallet with zippers that holds a gazillion store member cards (Ralph's card, Best Buy card, CVS card, Staples card, etc.), but it can't hold cash very well unless I fold the bills very tiny.

I have two computers at work and two computers at home, which I use constantly, but no cell phone at all. The reactions I get from people when they ask for my cell phone number and I tell them I don't have one is always amusing.

I also agree about the debit cards - I remember that when I was in high school one of my teachers told us that we would in our lifetimes become a virtually cash free society I laughed  but now I carry a debit card and rarely carry cash - the same teacher told me that we would all have computers inour homes - since we had one teletype computer in out whole high school I thought that was ridiculous statement

more fool me

Hoo and Ray and Ray and Hoo!! I keep seeing a notice in my mortgage statement that you can refinance easily through the company that already has my mortgage.  So tonight I picked up the phone and called.  It's not a done deal and I'm not celebrating too much yet, but it's nearly certain that I will be able to go to a 20 year fixed at 4.85.  Considering I'm at a 30 year fixed at 6.0 that's a deal.  I have to send a few things in, but I discussed the self employed new business issue with him and he said it's not a problem.

The best part is I get Marriott rewards points for refinancing.  What a kick!  It's not 1 for 1 or anything, but it's making a NYC fall vacation a lot more tempting

It's funny, since I've been working with my immigration clients who almost all use only cash, I've been using cash most of the time.  It really helps me keep on a budget.

The loan officer told me he thinks I'm paying way too much for homeowner's insurance.  I'm going to call my insurance agent tomorrow and discuss it with him.  If I can't get a better deal from him, I'm going to start shopping around.

the desktop computer and the internet completely changed the way I do my job - back in the "old days"  the 1990's for nstance - titel reports came in the mail - bank closing packages came by mail or overnight carrier and closings were schedueld at least  a week in advance  - nowadays everything can be done by internet  so people expect instanteous everything  - if tehy get bank clearance at 10 AM they expect you to conduct their closing at noon

You definitely should be able to negotiate the closing costs a bit with Chase  - not alot but you can probably get them to cut a couple of hundred off - for instance if they charge an application fee you can ask teh loan officer that you are dealing with to waive it since you are already a customer... the LO's hav acertain amount of dicretion on some of these "junk fees' -

take a look at the Wells Fargo, Bank of America  and Citimortgage websites too  and compare their costs to the Chase costs - simply mentioning that you are shopping around and throwing a few of those figures out can often  get you a  better deal with your current Lender

Was trying to watch a movie on Universal HD.  This is an HD cable station - wouldn't you think they'd show a nice hi-def movie without INTERRUPTION by commercial every ten minutes - and long breaks - which means to 102 minute movie is cut - and also looped for regular TV.  I shall never again watch Universal HD.

All I've eaten today are eggs, two pieces of toast, and a small Caesar salad.  I've been eating pretty lightly all week and this was the third jogging day in a row, but I'm in that netherworld where I won't actually lose weight for another few days - but then it should start coming off pretty regularly.

What I don't like about the Universal HD channel is that they'll show full-frame movies stretched out to fit widescreen TVs!  They can't even be bothered to get the widescreen versions of some movies!  That's just stupid. :P
