And the word of the day is: CONGERIES! Okay, it's a C word, but I hope we can say it without fear of reprisal.
DR JRand, when my mother and I drive to Illinois on Saturday, we'll be stopping not far from you for a 90th birthday party - Ben Davis area.
Why are Will Smith and Jada going to be on the Tony Awards show?
"pamplemousse" (French for "grapefruit"),

I'm reading GOD'S SECRETARIES, a wonderful book on the commissioning and translation of the King James version of the Bible. DR Ginny, has richard read this?

Tony Award Predictions (http://newyork.timeout.com/articles/theater/86341/2010-tony-award-predictions)
from Time Out New York's David Cote and Adam Feldman.
It's pretty much on the money, IMHO.
The Schwann's truck that goes past my house has needed a break job for the past few months. They really squeal every time he goes by
TOD:
Some favorites are "jejune", "obsequious" and "hissy fit".
I suppose "hissy fit" is an expression rather than a word, but I've never found a way to use "hissy" alone. Unless one were speaking of snakes or overly sibilant speech patterns, I can't imagine using it ever without "fit" tagging along behind it. I do see it, on occasion, in film music discussion forums when someone, upon hearing an issue of a score that was previously only on LP, complain that the recording sounds "hissy".
I believe we have entered the dog days of summer before summer.

iPhone is being very erratic - texts arriving late, no notification, phone not ringing, one phone call came in, left voice mail, and when I walked outside to listen to the voice mail all remnants of that phone call had disappeared from the phone. I spent some time with ATT, then with Apple - we trouble shot, restored, futzed. Then it was suggested I go to ATT and get a new SIM card for this brand new phone. I went over there - they suggested I do nothing but wait until ATT actually finishes trying to fix my three local 3G towers, which are not performing adequately for the last few weeks. That would explain a lot of things, I think. So, I'll wait. In the meantime she had me change the network setting to E, the 2G network, which is working better in my nabe. I can switch it back to 3G when I'm in other parts of the city.
I watched SHUTTER ISLAND last night.
For the most part, I enjoyed it, but like so many of Scorsese's movies (e.g. GANGS OF NEW YORK, THE AVIATOR), it could have easily lost 20-30 minutes.
Indeed, shorter it could have been a "classic".
Happy Cole Porter's Birthday!

I didn't even buy him a card.

That's a shame. maybe one with an epigram from DR Ron Pulliam would suffice.
I am reading Justin Cronin's new novel, THE PASSAGE.

The Texas Rangers are leading the Seattle Mariners by a score of 10 to 0. And it is only the 4th inning.
TD, as someone who has chronic kidney stones, I find that hilarious. Hope the book is half as good.
I've been watching GHOST HUNTER ACADEMY and I am ready for bed. I liked YOUNG VICTORIA a lot. After the film, I read VCTORIA AND ALBERT.As the film goes along, it is getting much better. And I love Emily Blunt.

I've now seen SHUTTER ISLAND four times, and had read the book quite a while before I saw it, and I must say that it is quickly becoming a favorite Scorsese film with added viewings.
When I first saw it, I felt the same way as you did, that twenty minutes could have been cut, but then, on second viewing, I couldn't think of where I would begin to start cutting. The end credits alone run TEN MINUTES!
Every bit of information that a viewer needs is dealt out within the film's running time; multiple viewings reveal the many layers of the performances and hint at what is really going on. For example, I wasn't fond of Mark Ruffalo's performance the first time I saw the movie in the theaters, but, subsequent viewings have revealed wonderful moments such as his fumbling with his holster, and the repetition of "You alright, Boss?" complete a dynamic established in Dennis Lehane's source novel. Robin Bartlet's short interrogation scene is another one with many layers (as well as the deliberate water glass sequence).
Where would you start to edit the film down? I'm very curious since I admire this movie more and more the more I think about it.
Also, I think it's closing line, which I will not repeat here as I think it could be a spoiler, is one of the true American classic final film lines.
