Title: THE P WORD
Post by: bk on June 09, 2010, 12:10:38 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes decried the use of the P word, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently using the C word and that apparently, amongst cows anyway, is no longer acceptable.  So, they're trying to find another word for cud.

TOD: This journalist loves almost every word ("poignant" is an exception). Playing with them can be the best fun there is. As an editor, I also enjoy untangling the verbal knots of others and using new word combinations to make ideas more plain.

Favorites? I love "festoon," "edenic," "crisp" (that's the foodie in me talking), "garrulous" and too many more to remember at this early hour.

A few foreign words I love are "rabanos" (Spanish for "radishes"), "pamplemousse" (French for "grapefruit"), "Gemutlichkeit" (German for a kind of cozy hospitality) and "obrigado" (Portuguese for "thank you"). I just love sounding these words, letting them roll off the tongue, regardless of what the word means.

Good morning, all! I slept quite well, and I will soon be off to another round of McGlinnventory. I have a trek to Toyland following that, prinarily to gather up some  music, and I need to talk to Joshie about some possible work. Changing the McGlinnventory days this week has truly screwed up my schedule and I am not happy about it.

I have to draft a letter of some importance before I leave and I am a bit preoccupied with what to write at the moment.

Catalyst is always a good word.  I used it in a sentence to a theatre person once.....and one month later it was in his director's notes AND the mission statement for his theatre.

Yes, the Antoinette Perry Awards are being broadcast this Sunday evening.

Program note:  due to the special added performances of Lady Gaga, Justin, Bieber, Green Day, the Cast of GLEE, AMERICAN IDOL winner Lee DeWyze and a dance number by Paula Abdul, all of the evening's awards will be given out during an un-aired presentation before the ceremony.

I watched SHUTTER ISLAND last night.

For the most part, I enjoyed it, but like so many of Scorsese's movies (e.g. GANGS OF NEW YORK, THE AVIATOR), it could have easily lost 20-30 minutes.

Indeed, shorter it could have been a "classic".

I got to see the last 15 minutes of GLEE last night - so I missed the performances.....but it certainly set us up for a nice new season.

I liked the last couple of songs that I saw.....although I like Kurt's voice less and less....or maybe it's just watching him "perform" the songs......

TOD - In Cincinnati the old Rookwood Pottery building has been turned into a restaurant.  Years ago, their menu featured burgers named after Cincinnati streets and I liked to order the Erkenbrecker Burger just because I liked saying it out loud.

On the flip side, words that just make me cringe are "plethora," which was grossly overused in my students' writing when I taught at Miami, and "monies," which my friend the politician uses when she's pontificating.

Title: Re: THE P WORD

TOD:

Some favorites are "jejune", "obsequious" and "hissy fit".

I suppose "hissy fit" is an expression rather than a word, but I've never found a way to use "hissy" alone.   Unless one were speaking of snakes or overly sibilant speech patterns, I can't imagine using it ever without "fit" tagging along behind it.  I do see it, on occasion, in film music discussion forums when someone, upon hearing an issue of a score that was previously only on LP, complain that the recording sounds "hissy".

"Ubiquitous" is another nice word.

Words I abhor include "typically" which peppers discussions in the workplace, much to my dismay.  I also had a boss back in 1987-88 who appropriated the word "geopolitical" and made it part of every assignment.  Yes, we all had to include the "geopolitical" ramifications of anything and everything about which we wrote.

And while I'm on this subject, the song "You Light Up My Life" remains my most-hated song, primarily because of its ubiquitous airplay when it was first released as a single.  Hearing it today can nearly send me into a hissy fit.  In fact, there would be geopolitical ramifications if that were to occur in a public place, because I would raise a ruckus with a multitude of profanities in various languages (one need not be fluent in order to pick up "colorful" phrases in foreign tongues).

I am so annoyed right now it's not even funny.  The helper never showed up.  I finally had a text from her (that didn't come through when she sent it at ten-fifteen), saying she'd slept through her alarm, had the stomach flu (same excuse as two weeks ago when this happened), and was moving slowly but would be here.  Needless to say, I have not heard a peep since.  I have just left her a long message telling her I'd be finding someone else to do this job.  She would NEVER do this to her other employer EVER because they would fire her instantly if she was even one minute late, and I guarantee you she will be to them today right on time.  So, I had to do everything by myself - every form, every box, every everything - it's all done now but I am just so over this.  These people get paid pretty decent dough (under the table) for working two to three hours.  Oh, well - next.

There have been a couple of sit-coms (including the Partridge Family) where family members, playing Scrabble, are so desperate to find words within the letter tiles they have that they make up ficticious words. ("Ficticious" is a nice-sounding word, isn't it.) Anyway, one of the funniest scenes I saw was in the Keaton family where the father made up "zoquo" - meaning to participate in water sports, and Alex made up "ushnu" - meaning to towel off. When asked to use the word "ushnu" in a sentence, Alex P. Keaton said, "After I zoquo, I like to ushnu" in such a matter-of-fact way that I laughed and laughed. I still like the words "zoquo" and "ushnu" to this day.

My mother survived the cortisone shot in her hip, which she thought would be like getting a flu shot.  No-o-o-o, it was quite a procedure and she's to take it easy the rest of the evening.  I made sure she had her emergency call beeper around her neck before I left.

When I got home, Richard and Rob loaded the loveseat we're replacing into my Vibe and we delivered it to the garage sale site.  We picked up fried chicken, enjoyed dinner, and now I'm ready to veg in front of the TV for a while.

Actually the Schwann driver's wife rigged the brakes so she would know when he was almost home.

The last two days at work have been chilly.  The nutcase broad who I work with flipped out yesterday morning and began screaming at me.  Every few minutes she would announce that she was going home.  I wouldn't have stopped her.

T.O.D.

The word that makes me cringe is "copacetic."  I had a boss when I was delivering furniture who managed to use that word in almost every sentence that he uttered.

Ironically it was also the only multi-syllabled word he ever used.

I love "hissy fit." Use it often, in fact. I once had a boss who had never heard the phrase and used to get the giggles whenever I used it.

iPhone is being very erratic - texts arriving late, no notification, phone not ringing, one phone call came in, left voice mail, and when I walked outside to listen to the voice mail all remnants of that phone call had disappeared from the phone.  I spent some time with ATT, then with Apple - we trouble shot, restored, futzed.  Then it was suggested I go to ATT and get a new SIM card for this brand new phone.  I went over there - they suggested I do nothing but wait until ATT actually finishes trying to fix my three local 3G towers, which are not performing adequately for the last few weeks.  That would explain a lot of things, I think.  So, I'll wait.  In the meantime she had me change the network setting to E, the 2G network, which is working better in my nabe.  I can switch it back to 3G when I'm in other parts of the city.

I've now seen SHUTTER ISLAND four times, and had read the book quite a while before I saw it, and I must say that it is quickly becoming a favorite Scorsese film with added viewings.
When I first saw it,  I felt the same way as you did, that twenty minutes could have been cut, but then, on second viewing, I couldn't think of where I would begin to start cutting.  The end credits alone run TEN MINUTES!
Every bit of information that a viewer needs is dealt out within the film's running time; multiple viewings reveal the many layers of the performances and hint at what is really going on.  For example, I wasn't fond of Mark Ruffalo's performance the first time I saw the movie in the theaters, but, subsequent viewings have revealed wonderful moments such as his fumbling with his holster, and the repetition of "You alright, Boss?" complete a dynamic established in Dennis Lehane's source novel.  Robin Bartlet's short interrogation scene is another one with many layers (as well as the deliberate water glass sequence).
Where would you start to edit the film down?  I'm very curious since I admire this movie more and more the more I think about it.
Also, I think it's closing line, which I will not repeat here as I think it could be a spoiler, is one of the true American classic final film lines.

Okay, based on a single viewing:

I think that you could cut the roles played by Elias Koteas and Ted Levine, and you would not miss them.

That is not a criticism of the actors.  They're great, but their scenes do not really move the story forward.

I would also trim some of Michelle Williams' scenes for the same reason.

That's just off the top of my head.  If/when I see the movie again, I'm sure I can come up with other possible cuts.

I just got very bored during the middle third of the picture.
