Well, you've read the notes, the notes were tony and in need of a helper, and now it is time for you to post until the tony cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: VEXILLOLOGY!
-
From the notes:
Having two cast members from Glee perform completely irrelevant numbers? Pander much?
Both Michele and Morrison are recognized Broadway musical stars who performed classic Broadway musical numbers - not "current" but hardly
"irrelevent" either. The show was probably better served by a classic reprise than by someone doing two more songs from the weaker contenders.
der Brucer
-
Well, you and I have different interpretations of the word "star" - this was done specifically to pander - and it was, for me, irrelevant. Since it's Mr. Sondheim's 80th year and there are two Sondheim shows on Broadway, I would have voted for Bernadette doing a little Sondheim medley.

Good point. Strange to have Peters, Lansbury, and Cook all on a Broadway stage and not a note to be heard from any of them,

My thought for the day:
(from WIRED MAGAZINE (http://www.wired.com/magazine/2010/04/st_essay_particles/))
...Karl Popper, the great philosopher of science, once divided the world into two categories: clocks and clouds. Clocks are neat, orderly systems that can be solved through reduction; clouds are an epistemic mess, “highly irregular, disorderly, and more or less unpredictable.”
The mistake of modern science is to pretend that everything is a clock, which is why we get seduced again and again by the false promises of brain scanners and gene sequencers. We want to believe we will understand nature if we find the exact right tool to cut its joints.
But that approach is doomed to failure. We live in a universe not of clocks but of clouds.

That's what you get when you pander to people who don't actually go to the theater. :P
-
Well, I'm glad I didn't watch. Have little desire to catch up with whatever of the evening is now on YouTube.
But I agree that when you have women like Cook, Lansbury, Peters, etc. on hand and you have Sondheim's 80th, then why not put them to use? Get Billie Joe and Green Day to do a Sondheim song, too. Or any other show tune to build a bridge. Might have been fun.

TOD: Love the scores for "The Grand Tour" and "Mack and Mabel." Would have to pick "Marianne," "I Don't Want to Know," "That's How Young I Feel," "Song on the Sand" and "One Extraordinary Thing" as favorites among favorites.
I laugh every time I see the British cast recording where the show on the spine is listed as "Mack and Mable." Guess the editor was off that day.

Well, time to get ready for work.

re: the Tonys last night.
I actually thought that Sean Hayes did a lot better than I was expecting. He was funny. I liked when he came out dressed as Annie!
Btw, does American Idiot have flashing lights all throughout the actual show? I would never have done that on tv. A lot of people are bothered by those flashing lights. I know i couldn't look at the tv. It really bothers my eyes!
-
More Tonys.
I really liked how they showcased the plays (by having actors from the shows talk about them). My only complaint is that they didn't name every actor on stage. There were some i didn't know and a few i knew but couldn't remember their names.
I loved that bebe/nathan bit at the end. Very funny.
Re: The A little night music song choice. I get that "Send in the clowns" is the most popular song in the show. And i get that they wanted to feature Catherine zeta jones since she was nominated. But to me that is not what i would choose to make non-Sondheim people want to see the show. You need a big number or at least a number featuring a group of people to get people interested.
I"m not sure if i'd want to see Memphis. But they had it right with choosing a song to sing. That kind of big group number is exactly what you should do on the Tonys.
-
Last Tony post.
I liked how they had the winning musical come on at the end.
I loved the choregraphy section for Promises Promises.
re: the Glee section. I think it was great to tie that show into the Tonys. I think it was great to have Matthew and Lea sing on the Tonys. I am not sure about what they had them do. I thought the idea for Lea was more appropriate than what they had matthew do. But i would have rather see them do something more tied into broadway this year. Even if they sang some songs from shows this year.
But i agree that a sondheim tribute would have been so amazing to see.
-
BK, re: the situation with the helper.
I"m sure you'll get your invoices back. It is weird that she contacts you and then doesn't.
But I think you're letting it get to you too much. Don't get crazy about it. I'm sure you'll get your invoices back. I wouldn't threaten her or constantly call her. You've decided to part ways with her. So you know that is done. I would try to act calmly. Just let her know you need the invoices right away.
-
Didn't hate the show - didn't love the show - but was glad that it really gave me an impression of what shows are now on Broadway - even though it didn't compel me to see many of them.
I am intrigued by ENRON, but don't know much about it. I don't know about RED, but it's a new play with NO vibrator....so there.

I like the big title numbers.....Hello, Dolly! and Mame.....and My Best Girl and I Am What I Am.......

Good morning, all! Seeing the last 45 minutes of EMMA last night has given me the desire to see the whole thing again, so I think I'll drag it out and begin watching it tonight.
As to the Tonys, I was so hoping that FINIAN'S RAINBOW would grab something, but we've been out of the race for too long. I can still remember my disappointment when the late great Lynn Thigpen lost best actress for TINTYPES to Lauren Bacall, whose performance in WOMAN OF THE YEAR was dreadful, about as poor as Bernadette Peters in ANNIE GET YOUR GUN. So one thing is clear: Tony voters are starstruck, whether the actor is any good or not. Our winning leading lady has missed shows right and left the past several weeks.
So, today, a walk to the pharmacy and City Center to see Joshie, and not much more/

Suggestions re: your helper/invoice problem:
1. Do you have a mutual friend who can intercede on your behalf?
2. Even though it's annoying, can you recreate the invoices from your computer or PayPal?
3. Offer her a few bucks to return them (Not my favorite idea.)
4. Have a lawyer send her a legal letter that says if she doesn't return them you'll file theft charges.
5. As a last resort, there's always Blackie and Louie and their baseball bat. (My favorite idea. ::) )
BTW: I would not keep going to the theater or, if you know her address, her home. If she's as flaky as you say, you don't want to get accused of stalking.

TOD: I Won't Send Roses
Like I said last night, I almost turned the show off after the excrable opening number, but I hung with it and didn't find it all totally horrible. Sean wasn't bad...though I wondered what most of Middle America made of the joke kiss between Sean/Kristen in response to the the Newsweek article. What am I saying? Middle America doesn't watch the Tonys! And George and Der Brucer, don't make me put emoticons on my "I didn't believe it" crack. I knew what it was all about....I thought all the straight plays actually looked pretty interesting. All the musicals looked like Vegas cast-offs or rock concerts. If I want to know about AMERICAN IDIOT, I'll listen to the concept album where I can turn the decibel level way down or off, but I won't have to go to the theatre and be musically assaulted.
Some of the women were horribly anorexic. I hate winners who go up unprepared and blather. I hated the pandering with movie personalities and celebrities. I hate when half the audience empties out to come onstage, because everyone of them had something minimal to do with a show that's just won. You want to tell them, most of you are not being seen on TV, so stop being so childish. The Tony's never going to sit on your mantle, just take your dividend cheque.
Who votes for the winners? Is there some cabal of money-grubbing producers that says vote for the movie stars so they'll keep coming back to Broadway and give us marquee value?
If anything the show amply displayed to me that Broadway is no longer where it's at...the most interesting theatre is being done in the regional theatres.

RE: The Tonys...
The winner of the 2010 Tonys was, IMHO, Sean Hayes. If it weren't for him, just about the entire broadcast would have been unbearable.
Unlike most of you, I liked the AMERICAN IDIOT numbers (though I have seen the title song performed better elsewhere.) But Green Day should not have been there--they only managed to upstage everything else in the opening number.
I thought Kristen Chenoweth's bit was funny and cute. Same with Bebe Neuwirth/Nathan Lane later in the show (I wish NL had pushed the Passover joke a little more to make it obvious that it was a Bob Hope reference.)
As for MEMPHIS, for a show that's suppose to be about 50's black music, it's score sounds an awful lot like HAIRSPRAY...
The less said about Matthew Morrison's out-of-breath number and Lea Michael's FUNNY GIRL audition, the better...

I'm up, I've announced, and I'm tired.

I have asked repeatedly for the invoices to be returned. I've asked nicely. I'm trying to be calm but calm doesn't work for me after this many attempts. I haven't yelled at her - the only thing I've said in my messages is that I don't understand, that this kind of behavior in lieu of the fact of how good I've been to her is weird to me, and that I need the invoices.

BK, do you have a lawyer acquaintance?
In all seriousness, if she has completely cut off contact and you know that she's not incapacitated, you should leave one last message that you'll have to resort to legal action since this effects your livelyhood. And then you'll have to follow through with it and let an actual lawyer do the next contact attempt...

Hello! Hello!
-
I did not watch the Tony Awards last night 'cause I was watching a Bollywood movie, and I had not enough room on my DRV to record the show in HD. So I passed. I am pleased to know that Denzel Washington won. I think he is a fabulous actor and I would love to see FENCES.
-
Didn't watch the Tony show...and reading the comments this morning, I'm glad I didn't.
I don't quite understand the animosity toward actors who have had success in films being feted for their work on Broadway, but to each his own. I do realize there is a lot of "pandering" in order to juice up boxoffice takes...which sort of explains some really dreadful casting decisions over the past years.
Given what has transpired over the past decade, it rather makes Liz Taylor's turn in "The Little Foxes" seem like a major class act.
(Who here remembers Jackie O's sister Lee Radziwill making an acting debut on TV playing "Laura"? Oof-tah!)

What I found interesting about last night's Best Actor and Actress winners in both categories is that all four won playing roles in revivals in which the original cast members also won Tony Awards:
James Earl Jones won Best Actor for FENCES
Mary Alice won for Best Featured Actress for FENCES
George Hearn won for LA CAGE AUX FOLLES
Glynis Johns won for A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC

So, Dan (the Man), maybe it is the role that wins, not the actor.

It sometimes seems that way, DR Laura. There are some roles--Tevye, Hedda Gabler, Madea--that just seem to always get their actors nominated, at least.

And my favorite example of the role winning and not the actor was the three-way tie last year of the three actors portraying the one role in "Billy Elliot."
-
Well, I don't have my own flag, but as I walked out of the courthouse after a very contentious divorce with my ex fighting over nothing , I looked around and saw all the flags flying for Flag Day and it made me smile and feel free. I remember that feeling every year on Flag Day.

I missed C Z-J doing Clowns last night, but there was a clip from Broadway.com from a commercial I caught. I have to say when I saw Glynis shortly after the original opened, my thought at the time (which I’ve never forgotten) was, “Wow—is the song starting now?”, so perfectly low-key was her delivery. It just kind of segued effortlessly out of the dialogue and it took me a moment or two to realize the song had started. No “acting” at all. ;)
-
my favorite Jerry Herman song is "Marianne."

I laugh every time I see the British cast recording where the show on the spine is listed as "Mack and Mable." Guess the editor was off that day.

I read the comments on facebook about the Tony Awards. Not one had a nice thing to say about the show. Many reason were the same site in BK's note. Also hard hit was Catherine Zeta-Jones and her performance of Send In The Clowns. Many felt that she was performing to the third balcony instead if being in the moment like she is the show. As for me I would have chosen A Weekend In The Country (Slightly edited for time constraints) as the best representation of that show.

I was wrong (first time ever ;D ) and my DVR did record The Tonys last night. When I set it, it said there was not enough room on the DVR, but I guess I managed to clear enough stuff off that the machine was able to record the show.
So anyway, I watched it (fast forwarding through much) this morning before going to work (didn't hvae to go in until 1pm).
1) I thought Sean Hayes did a very nice job of hosting.
2) I think I would enjoy seeing FENCES, PROMISES PROMISES, and MEMPHIS.
3) Like Ron Pulliam, I don't see why it should matter if the star of a show was/is a movie actor. Hasn't it always been that way on Broadway?
4) Pandering: If the Tonys don't get seen by the viewing public, then they won't get shown. If having someone or something that will bring in viewers keeps the show on the air each year...well I would guess anyone would do the same thing. They ain't just doing this for their health. Plus, they might get people interested in seeing life theater, who otherwise never would. I think that is a wonderful thing!
5) I skipped most of the speeches.
6) I was amazed at how good B. P. looked (don't hate me JRand!)
7) Got a kick out of the Football player who was a musical fan.
8) As usual I enjoyed the awards show. I guess I am easily entertained.

The last several weeks I have been walking to work. Partly because I want to keep mileage on my car to a minimum, and partly for the exercise, as I never seem to get my ever expanding butt to the gym.
I am now rethinking this whole experiment.
It takes me 25 minutes to walk to work. I leave my house, which is located in a bad part of town...walk through an undesirable part of town...and arrive at an even worse part of town. I have passed by any number of sketchy characters, ones I would not want to meet in a dark, or even bright, alley.
Also, I think cars try to kill pedestrians in this town. They certainly have no interest in letting a walker cross a marked cross-walk.
-
I wonder if MattH watched the Tonys. I do miss his comments on various and sundried TV shows/specials, and will particularly feel that way come the new season.

Mike, are you sure that some saved things weren't automatically deleted?? My DVR will delete the oldest stuff if the recording of newer stuff needs more room. However, I can manually set each saved program to not delete unless I manually delete it.

Well, I don't have my own flag, but as I walked out of the courthouse after a very contentious divorce with my ex fighting over nothing , I looked around and saw all the flags flying for Flag Day and it made me smile and feel free. I remember that feeling every year on Flag Day.
Thanks, and sorry it's a sad day for you
I like the idea it is a day of joyous freedom for you. Today was my sister's birthday. I am now free from her tyranny, but it is very sad not joyous.
-
My point is, you are darn lucky not to have to wait to read book three after completing book two. Between one & two isn't a big deal ;)
-
Thanks Cilla. I wish it were sad because she is gone not because I am free.
-
Yes, I hate having to wait to get to the next book,. That's why I bought all three at once. Now I'm really glad I did
-
The funny thing last night was I would think...ok, when I finish this chapter I'll go to sleep. Then when I finished the chapter I'd think...well I can't leave now, one more chapter. To me it's a good book that does that to me. I should say for those who are considering the trilogy, there are parts that are violent and brutal...the original Swedish title of the first book translates to "Men who Hate Women"
-
Well, I just found out that our library board met this morning to decide on who will be the new executive director. Hopefully, we'll find out SOON!
(And hopefully, they'll make the right decision...and the right candidate will actually accept the offer!) ;)

There's a Sondheim recording (I forget which) where they spell his first name as "Steven" on the spine. I remember reading that there was a voluntary recall, and they did changed it for later copies, but there are quite a few incorrect ones that are still out there.
It is the Off-Broadway CD of "Saturday Night" - I have one... I'll sell it to you for $250 LOL

I just stopped by to say......
HELLO

GOOD BYE

I have a copy as well. It says Stephen on the back but Steven on the spine.

This is the same old argument they always use - let's pander because it will bring in the audience - only it doesn't. It never brings in the audience they want and/or need. So, why pander?

This, dear readers, has been a day and a half. As you know, I was up at six, announced, printed out a bunch of orders, and went back to bed around seven-thirty. When I got up at ten-thirty I could not get on the Internet, I could not print orders, I could not do anything. I called Time Warner - no problem on their end, and they had me do all the stuff they always have you do - none of which helped. I then called Apple and spent the next two and a half hours on the phone, doing every sort of troubleshooting, all to no avail. They kicked me up to a senior technician, who had me do scads of other things, all to no avail. He finally asked if he could call back in twenty minutes so he could go to the top echelon. He did, and we did more things - we then tried one final thing - he had me change the DNS ip address (don't ask me what any of it means) - we did, and voila, everything worked. He put me on an open (or public) DNS ip. He thinks that I either have to get a new modem or Time Warner was behaving weirdly and my modem was not feeding the DNS address to the wireless router properly. It certainly had to be that because once we changed it I was on. By that time it was three in the afternoon and I spent the next ninety minutes printing out hundreds of orders, and answering e-mails. It was madness personified, but at least it's working now. I made the call that I needed to make but the person was not there, so I left a message and we'll have that call tomorrow, I guess. Early in the morning I wrote the helper - one line, "Please let me know what time you can drop off the invoices - you can leave them on the porch - thanks, and much appreciated. I think you can guess that I never heard back.
I wrote another e-mail around one - this time I laid out for her in very nice terms what I think is going on - i.e. the only thing I can think of that makes sense. This girl has some pretty severe emotional problems stemming from events in her childhood and those problems manifest themselves in certain ways. I've tried to help her, in fact, understand how to deal with them, and some of the advice I gave her, she told me, actually worked. I think she got scared - I think she thought somehow I would yell at her or do some kind of scene or whatever craziness was going on in her head. So, I told her I was not the boogeyman, that I've only ever been nice and supportive and there for her, and that all I cared about at this point was getting the invoices back. I laid out several scenarios (the tone was always light) - drop them off when I'm not here, mail them back, or I'd have a mutual friend contact her and she could give them to that person.
And that's what I did - I called Barry Pearl and he called her and left a very nice message offering to be the intermediary. Needless to say, I never heard back (who knows if she's even reading my e-mails), but hopefully she'll call Barry back and we can wrap this up - or she can mail them. I just want it done, and then I want no contact with her ever again.
I talked to two potential replacements, one of whom would be very short term - I'd prefer someone who can be around for awhile, but the short term person will work if I can't find anyone for the next couple of weeks.
-
I finally had to get something to eat, which I did, and now I am back with more orders to print.
-
My niece and I took Gram shopping today and she took us out to lunch. When we got home, Laura and I spent a couple of hours playing with the Wii and laughed until we cried. Now we're going to have some munchies for dinner.

Thanks, Jane!!

I am DONE with this fersluganah day. Although, only part of it was fershluganah - the Promises orders have been great so far. I'm hoping they'll keep on coming. The shows are much tougher because I don't have any of my big online dealers, who normally take over two-thirds of the run before I even get one Kritzerland order. Here, I actually have to sell mostly on Kritzerland. I've sold about two hundred to dealers and we've had close to 400 orders today, which, for us, is extraordinary - so I'm very pleased so far and it hasn't even been one day yet. My one show dealer online is such an dope sometimes (I'm sure you know who he is) - he orders so light, and then he comes waltzing back in a panic needing a huge amount and one of these days I'm just gonna tell him "tough - sold out" and maybe then he'll learn a lesson.
-
And best of all we had a lot of multiple orders, and sold several of the new book, too :)
-
I was up until 3:00 am reading and finishing The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. There just wasn't a stopping point where I could easily put the book down and go to sleep. What a good book. Glad I bough the trilogy so I can start the next one right away.
Glad you enjoyed it. Book three begins where book two ends. It was very difficult to wait to read book three.
The books are long. And even though they are very interesting i find i don't have a problem putting them down at pretty much any point.
DR Jane i am only on around page 300 of book 3. So i guess i won't be finishing tomorrow since i have over 250 pages to go. But it sure is getting good. And i see what you mean about all the names. There are a lot. Although i find it easier to do the Swedish names than the Swedish places. None of those make any sense to me.

It's violent. But not like the movies. The movies are 100X more violent than the books (which was my biggest problem with the movies).
-
BK that could make sense re: the helper. If she had someone in her past who was abusive and she was afraid you were going to yell at her. I think that was great to have an intermediary. Good idea.
-
Now I get the comments about the violence-lol
-
Good morning, all!
So, today, a walk to the pharmacy and City Center to see Joshie, and not much more/
TOD:
Marianne
I Don't Want to Know
I Won't Send Roses
Time Heals Everything
Lynne Thigpen was great in just about everything she did, even "Carmen Sandiego." I wish she were still here.

For all you "Dragon Tattoo" fans, I noticed on my library's website that the Swedish movie is due soon on DVD. They've already got it on order, so look for it on Netflix soon.
-
I'm on page six of TIMES ARROW and don't think I want to read anymore. I wish I could remember who suggested this book to get a better feel for it.
-
Amazon says July 6 is the release date.
-
Thanks JohnG. It will be released on NetFlix July 6th and I have placed it at the top of my queue.

Guess I should have kept reading!
-
I was able to add the next two movies to my NetFlix queue for when they are released. As of now the dates are still unknown.
-
Hi Ginny, I couldn't wait any longer for you as the mother and her daughters had to go back to the library. Have you even had time to read? You have a much greater social life than I do. :)

i am here and I have nothing to say

Night, all.

i am here and I have nothing to say
I know what you mean.

Sorry, DR Jane, I left Nell, Lydia, and Cate at home, but I'd almost caught up to you before I left. I'll reconnect with them when I get back tomorrow. Did you finish the book or just take it back to the library?

well Laura - I must get me to bed - tomorrow will be another looney day

Good night, Vixmom.

Nothing, not a peep, and I presume Barry has had the same. Not sure what the next step should be but the one step I know it won't be is that I'll be going into paypal and reprinting 500 invoices (maybe 1000 invoices) - that will NOT be happening. I don't really want to go to a lawyer, but I know one person who's a lawyer (and I don't know him well - and I'd have to find his card) - if he'd do a letter then maybe it would be worth it - but I don't have her address, at least I don't think I do.

Hi Sam. Good night, Sam.

Are we ever getting off page five?
-
Wow, who knew?
-
Are we ever getting off page six?
-
Guess who ordered a CD today? Someone named Jill O'Hara.
-
Finished watching the movie - pretty wretched, but after the first twenty minutes or so, when things become clear, it was kind of enjoyable.
-
I would guess Jill O'Hara either was in Promises, Promises, or else that's the name of your helper or 3DDiffusion.
-
Jill was indeed the star of Promises, Promises.
-
Welcome seven GUESTS. I just wrote a post about who one of our GUESTS is, but I deleted it, hoping I'll hear from the person first. If not, I'll tell the story then - and this isn't about the helper.

You mean the Jill O'Hara??

Jill O'Hara didn't need an "arc."
