Well, you've read the notes, the notes made it official, and now it is time for you to post until the official cows come home.

I just (legally) downloaded Cy Coleman Presents Barnum by The Cy Coleman Trio (http://www.emusic.com/album/-Barnum-MP3-Download/11367686.html) from emusic.com.  This is a fun album. :D

Emusic.com is a monthly subscription MP3 music download site (and yes, they offer actual MP3 files, not proprietary file formats).  It's pretty cool...they have a lot of music and quite a variety of artists/albums.  The problem is that I started the service on the 26th of the month and it automatically charges every month on that date...but I don't usually have a lot of money at the end of the month. ::) I want to use up all my current credits and cancel my subscription.  Then, after the new month starts (and I've gotten paid), I can start again and have a new start/pay date.

Or I might just wait until they offer a whole bunch of free tracks/credits to rejoin. ;)

So, BK, will the Town Hall gig affect the cabaret series at all? And have you decided a theme for the first cabaret?

Lettice & Lovage in which Dame Maggie Smith was so funny that I actually thought I was going to die laughing

Noises Off which I have never seen in person - I have only seen the film

Good morning, all! Today is a day with the McGlinnventory. I'm concerned about tomorrow's schedule because I've overbooked myself for tomorrow morning and, while I tried to rectify the situation as soon as I realized it, I can do nothing till I hear back from the conflicting date and see if we can move our date to Friday.

So, after the McGlinnventory, I have a stop at the Post Office for two packages that were not left yesterday, and then some work here answering some LADY OF THE SLIPPER questions concerning the Act Three Harlequinade.

I've also been laughing myself silly at the vanities of mankind; the "conductor" of my last stand at the Library of Congress has recently begun a website to promote himself and I'm amazed at the chutzpah he possesses.  I don't know how he found the time to develop his conducting technique between inventing the Singer sewing machine, digging the Panama Canal, and creating the world in only seven days.

BK,

I tend to agree with you on A STAR IS BORN.

I wish that they'd either released the original theatrical version on a separate disc OR included the restored music/production stills material as an extra.

It's rather disconcerting the way it is now.

Wednesday morning greetings!  Just saw DS Rob off to paramedic school and now I'm gearing up for grocery shopping and food prep for tomorrow evening at the synod.  I'm making a veggie tray with dill dip, cocktail weenies in chili sauce, and a hot cheese spread with dried beef and green peppers.

It's supposed to be unpleasant today with very hot and humid weather. Tomorrow is supposed to be worse with predictions of record temperatures. Of course, we have nothing on Phoenix with temperatures over 100. We will just hit the very high 90s with extreme humidity.

I eat my oatmeal in the morning but on hot days it's hard to finish. I get so warm. We only have AC in the bedroom and sitting in front of a fan eating oatmeal is not fun.

Oh, boy.  I woke up with terrible cramping - I'm a bit better at the moment, but send all excellent vibes and xylophones that this isn't another case of food poisoning - I did have mushrooms last night, which I believe was the cause of the last food poisoning I had a couple of months ago.  Or maybe the drumettes, which are very spicy, had a little too much spice.  Hoping it's the latter and that this will subside shortly.

Yeah, I ditto on the A STAR IS BORN comments.  WHile it was interesting to see the "what-was-suppose-to-go-here" segments the first time, they become pretty tedious on repeat viewings (especially that far-shot footage of Judy getting out of the car to barf on the way to her premier...)

WHat does sound interesting on the Blu-Ray is the takes of "The Man Who Got Away".

Well the road between rehearsal and me was closed due to high water last night, so I had to turn around and take the interstate....instead of the alternate route I have been taking for about a year since the DIRECT route has been closed since last summer - who knows WHAT they're doing to it.

So the NEW non high water alternate route adds about 14 miles EACH WAY and I will probably have to drive it until the end of the week.

Yes, but posting from a portable vice without an "app" is takes a lot of time as there are many steps.  I'm not making excuses for DR Jose's disappearance from these parts, however.

BK,

I tend to agree with you on A STAR IS BORN.

I wish that they'd either released the original theatrical version on a separate disc OR included the restored music/production stills material as an extra.

It's rather disconcerting the way it is now.

I'd rather be "momentarily" disconcerted for a short sequence than miss out on all the glorious material that was missing from that old hack-job release we were treated to on TV all those years ago.

But, maybe that's just me.

Don't forget that a lot of the "performances" of Mason and Garland was also missing.  The entire sequence in the recording studio in which their private conversation was recorded, and then played back, was out of the film, as was most of "Lose That Long Face".

Those sequences alone are astonishing tours-de-force.

DR Dan (The Man):  I agree that it's disconcerting to see those stills with the soundtrack overlay, but what they bring to the story, I think, made their inclusion essential.  This sequence showed what happened the next day after Norman convinced Esther to quite the band...and it showed what efforts Norman went to in getting the studio to find her.  The studio indifference was a good insight into Norman's decline in importance to the studio, as well.  Norman's own efforts to find Esther were wonderful to finally "hear"...and that shot of them stopping so that she could go barf gave us an establishing shot of time and place...and a look at what that part of Los Angeles looked like in those days.  Love the neon on the buildings lining the road....and the oil drilling!

I also love, love, love that shot of an LA street at Christmas time.

The BD makes it more startlingly clear than ever before what Cukor and Ray Leavitt were after in terms of filling the CinemaScope screen...wonderful touches of lighted figures on one side...and then something softly lit on the other side of the room...a window...or a curtain blowing in the breeze.   It's a film of amazing creativity in approaching the "new widescreen process" that everyone was experimenting with.

One thing that has always bothered me....all the red in the Swanee number.  Everything in varying degrees of deep red/rust.

It was the bus ride from hell on the way back; I have never seen so many old coots with walkers on one bus, and I don't nderstand why the walkwrs are incapable of folding up to keep the bus aisle free. One onld lady with a wheelchair was pushing it, laden down as it was with many packages and she didn't need it except to carry her packages. And everyone of them smelled. Quite badly.

I guess I feel that I've seen the restored sequences enough times that I can fill in the spaces myself now if I would view the truncated version.  But, for now, they tend to take me out of the flow of the picture.  This should still be the "official" version that everyone should see, but I would like the option of viewing it without the restored segments (and that should be an easy menu option these days.)

I wonder how long it will be before these scenes can be totally recreated with CGI?

Methinks you're missing the point I was making (and Dan was making) - we just think that they should have included the version that most people saw back then, and which most people have seen since, right up to the restoration that Haver did.  It's what the film was since just after its original exclusive engagements so I feel it's historically important to have it included.  Included with the Haver so we have both.

Had a nice telephonic conversation with the producer of the potential benefit - they still have work to do on their end before it's real, so it will be a couple of weeks until it's a for sure thing.

I took a few photos during my hike today and then I took a few photos of the work on the driveway.  I'm not sure about sharing any of them today as a cold has hit me with a vengeance.  I have to hold Kleenex to my face with my left hand which makes it difficult to do much else at the same time.

Funny, while I'm typing this I'm having a short break from the kneenex and typing with two hand.  Typing one handed with the right hand bothers my shoulder & I can't do it for long.

BK:  I fully took the point you and Dan (The Man) were making re: inclusion of the short version.  I simply don't share any warm feelings for that cut film after having seen the restoratiion.  What the studio did to the two stars' performances cutting key scenes was a cultural crime.

Being given both the theatrical and roadshow cuts of "South Pacific", however, I can appreciate that folks can love something they admired for so long because I know many folks who prefer the theatrical cut.  I can't ever watch the theatrical cut having now seen the roadshow presentation.  I always thought "South Pacific"  entertaining, if not particularly enthralling, in its cut state.  I was totallly thrilled when I saw its restoration, and I knew the old cut would never be a satisfying expenditure of time for me again.  Ditto "A Star is Born".

Perhaps they should have thought of adding the emasculated "A Star is Born" as a bonus.  For those who want it, I hope it comes your way one day.

Team CLOSER are struggling with spots next door that I could have done in an hour. Really crazy not to be using a system when all the many hours of media are already in here and organized. And I'm done for my session for the day. Buh-bye. In an hour I get to go to a get-together to celebrate all the series launches, but as far as I know, I'm the only one not going forward since the other editors who were dropped from series are in-house and will be put on other things. It may be uncomfortable but I really want to leave the door open for future work so it seems like a good idea. Right now...

RLP, that's all I was saying - a bonus, for history's sake.  It would be like me putting out the director's version of The Creature Wasn't Nice - a completely different film in many ways from the hack job that is Spaceship/Naked Space - but I wouldn't put the director's version out without including the hack job, too, because that's the film people really know and despite it being lousy, some people grew up with it and love it.  I don't prefer the shorter version of A Star Is Born, but it would just be nice to have it as an extra, just to watch it again.

Understood.

Re: Your earlier comments about the sound:  I, too, was a bit taken aback at the sound issues in the first part of "A Star is Born."  The earlier DVD sounded great.  I've read that this is the first issue of the film without "compressed sound."  I think they might have considered compressing "some of it".  I think the  muffled (or blanketed...like someone put a blanket over a speaker) overture is disappointing since the music is so utterly splendid throughout the film

Ray Heindorf did a magnificent job with his underscore.  Great to see him "on screen".

It most definitely IS one of the best-ever devices man has concocted...ESPECIALLY when it's 93 or just miserably uncomfortable indoors.

To add just a bit of insult, though, we are having the most extraordinarly cool June ever.  Current temp is 73, but we have a bay breeze and that's a bit of natural AC.

I hate to keep bugging Randy about it, and Macbeth and Lady M, as they have done since Feb 2007, will do nothing, although they'll both get burns on their writsts reaching for the check from the buyer as son as it's signed.

No one is hiding under the leopard-spotted fainting couch, which makes me very happy. I think they were turned in to the pound about ten days ago and were kept in a cage in the foster coordinator's office, and then caged here. I don't think they have had much opportunity to run and play. They are having a GRAND time!

Sooo.... it's a walkway.

for another day or two. :)  My car is parked at the bottom of the driveway and has been since Monday morning.  I have never had such a dirty car.  There must be several inches of sand & dust on it.

Well, I broke down and turned on the air conditioner. I'm sitting in the bedroom listening to Mike Harding on BBC Radio Two. It's a folk, roots and acousting music show. I just finished darning two socks (yes, people still do that). I was going to iron a shirt but decided against it since dripping sweat on a clean shirt doesn't do much good for the shirt.

Yes, Kevin, AC is a wonderful invention!!! It's terribly hot here (I did exercise but only briefly) and it's supposed to be worse tomorrow. I'm glad I have an air conditioned office.

Cilla did.  Not the one with the black head, but the one with more gray on its head,  It has a longer face than the others.

When k.d. lang first toured with "Ingenue," she would perform "Miss Chatelaine" as her Lawrence Welk moment. She had bubble machines and she would leap through the bubbles while singing. It was a wonderful moment. Then again, all her concerts were wonderful. She would go full throttle and do four-hour sets in those days. Sometimes, two a day.

Am eating something called cheese curds for the first time. And what's not to like: Lumps of cheese, all melty and delicious, with a slight sour tinge. I heated them in a double boiler with some butter and hot pepper, until they became a hot, gooey mess. Some people prefer them fried, which I guess I'll have to try the next time.

I have been out all day while DR Sandra has been taking care of kittens. They are all running around the room playing at the moment. No one is hiding under the leopard-spotted fainting couch, which makes me very happy. I think they were turned in to the pound about ten days ago and were kept in a cage in the foster coordinator's office, and then caged here. I don't think they have had much opportunity to run and play. They are having a GRAND time!

DR Edi, you will be pleased to know that three members of my preservation group ganged up on me tonight (HWHC didnt' show up, even though he's chair...in all fairness, I think his son had a baseball game).  I challenged them to get me the name and number of someone who could do the windows before tomorrow (get the number not have the windows done).  Well Tom called me about an hour later and gave me the name and number of a kid named BB. He even called BB's boss to see if he could do it as a side job.  John volunteered to do it himself, but since he flies around the world representing different musical and dance groups, he thought it would take him about 10 years to finish, lol.

Anyway, I gave in and have given the windows a stay of execution.  I have a feeling I'll get the help I've wanted now.  I was just asking the wrong person.

I have managed to pump out four reviews today.  That's a lot of writing, ladies and germs.

For anyone who saw and enjoyed MASTER CLASS, or is a fan of "La Divina," there's a most excellent new documentary streeting next week I highly recommend called CALLAS:  ASSOLUTA.

I am trying to see if I can get my required 20 reviews out by July 1, since we leave on our cross country driving trip to Wisconsin on July 2.  I can take my PS3 with me and continue to review while I'm on the road, but I think I'd probably prefer not to.  :)

That means I need to pump out at least 2 a day, preferably 3, between tomorrow and July 1.

Just saw on the Dayton 11pm news that several tall buildings downtown were evacuated.  Richard and I figured that we were driving at the time of the quake and didn't feel anything.

I've done about as much food and other Synod prep as I can do tonight, so I'm going to bed - 'night!

So with that in mind, I'm off to watch ICE ROAD TRUCKERS:  SEASON 3 on BD.  Pray for Rosemary's baby, who is now driving a truck across the frozen tundra.  :)

Oh, and BTW, the second day of blaming JMK has now produced 10 pages.  I think results speak for themselves.  ;)

Seems that the ALW tune for "The Heart is Slow To Learn", "Our Kind of Love" and "Love Never Dies" (all 3 have the same tune)  is VERY reminiscent of the main theme of "The Apartment".

I know that doesn't come as a shock to anyone here.

It's supposed to be unpleasant today with very hot and humid weather. Tomorrow is supposed to be worse with predictions of record temperatures. Of course, we have nothing on Phoenix with temperatures over 100. We will just hit the very high 90s with extreme humidity.

When I came home from work at about 8:00 tonight, my bedroom (with the skylight opened) was about 85° F. :P

It's much cooler, now.

Well, a little while ago, a co-worker called (after going to tonight's library board meeting) and told me that we finally have a new executive director!  I have no idea when he'll start, but this will be a very good thing for Timberland!

I was hungry so I ate one of everything I had in the house, save for the caramels, which I'd already eaten an obscene amount of.  I had one low cal low fat hot dog with red cabbage and cheese, I had a matzo with butter, and I had a tiny amount of sunflower seeds.  Stupid, but I'm not hungry anymore.

I hope you're feeling better, BK.

DRs, can I please ask you again for more real estate vibes toward selling this damned property in Ohio? I hate to keep bugging Randy about it, and Macbeth and Lady M, as they have done since Feb 2007, will do nothing, although they'll both get burns on their wrists reaching for the check from the buyer as son as it's signed.

I'm in Manhattan so I can do nothing but send property-will-sell vibes and ask you to do the same!

Where is George this evening?

Today, I was at work until about 8:00 pm.  During work, I was working.  I was ordering adult fiction and non-fiction books.  It works and the titles are searchable because they were added before the indexing problem(s) happened, so it went fairly quickly.

And that's where I was.  Now, I'm at home, watching a tape of "Doctor Who" (they're episodes from 1965 and 1988 about the Daleks) that I borrowed from a co-worker.  I've had it for far too long, so I figured that I should watch it and return it.
