Title: FULL STOP
Post by: bk on July 03, 2010, 11:58:40 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were non-stop, then came to a full stop, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently coming to a full stop, so there's no telling WHEN the damn cows are coming home.

As promised, here's the pre-announcement of the new Kritzerland release, both films of which I've recently written about in the notes.  It's great stuff.  You know the drill - $19.98 to paypal.com using our paypal address of kritzerland at adelphia dot net.

“MY NAME IS JUGGERNAUT”

Kritzerland is proud to present a new limited edition soundtrack CD – two great scores for two great Richard Lester films, on one CD:

JUGGERNAUT and THE BED SITTING ROOM

Music Composed and Conducted by Ken Thorne

By the time of 1974’s Juggernaut, Richard Lester was known for his two wonderful Beatles’ films, A Hard Day’s Night and Help!, the film version of the Broadway show A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, as well as The Knack, The Bed Sitting Room, and How I Won the War, all of which were suffused with Lester’s visual style and humor.  He’d also made the drama, Petulia, which was a whole different kind of film for Lester, and just prior to Juggernaut, he’d made a boisterous and wonderful film of The Three Musketeers.  But nothing Lester had done really could have prepared audiences for the tension-filled, excruciating suspense of Juggernaut.  While it’s sometimes spoken of as a disaster film, it’s not really in the Irwin Allen mold at all.  The set-up comes quickly – a man identifying himself only as “Juggernaut” calls the owner of a shipping line and says there are seven barrels of amatol (explosives) on board the luxury-liner the Brittanic.  They are set to explode by dawn of the next day.  Any attempt to defuse them will cause them to detonate.  If a ransom of 500,000 pounds is paid, Juggernaut will then send instructions on how to defuse the bombs.  Juggernaut then gives a little demonstration by triggering a few small explosions.  All this happens during the film’s terrific opening sequence.

From there on out it’s a game of edge-of-your-seat cat and mouse scenes between RichardHarris as Fallon, a bomb expert, and Juggernaut.  Everything about the film works beautifully, and it has a great cast – Richard Harris and David Hemmings (as his number one man) are superb, as are Omar Sharif, Shirley Knight, Ian Holm, Lester regular Roy Kinnear, a young Anthony Hopkins, and especially Freddie Jones.

Five years earlier, Lester directed a film version of John Antrobus and Spike Milligan’s post-apocalyptic comedy, The Bed Sitting Room.   Lester brought his unique comic visual style to this very weird comedy, which features an amazing cast (listed in the credits not alphabetically, but by height) – Ralph Richardson, Michael Hordern, Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Marty Feldman, Mona Washbourne, Roy Kinnear, Arthur Lowe, and fellow Goon Show members, Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe.

The scores for both films were written by Lester’s frequent musical collaborator, Ken Thorne.  Thorne’s score for Juggernaut is very brief but very effective – it is filled with tension, has some great action scoring when the bomb squad is parachuting aboard the Brittanic, and his music heightens every scene in which it’s used.  There’s also a very pretty theme to accompany scenes with Shirley Knight and Omar Sharif, but mostly his music plays the same cat and mouse game that the characters play.  Thorne’s score for The Bed Sitting Room is the polar opposite of Juggernaut – whimsical, jaunty, rueful, and filled with one great melody after another.  Thorne was really adept at writing comedy scores, in a way that few composers are.  And he especially had an affinity for complimenting Lester’s visuals.

The source material for both scores came from Mr. Thorne’s personal tapes.  For Juggernaut, those tapes had the entire brief score, save for one cue, the end titles.  We were able to take most of that from the DVD (there is a tiny bit of sound effects – ocean noise – for the first few seconds).  The Bed Sitting Room is quite a long score, but Mr. Thorne only had highlights from it on a reel, and we’ve included everything he had, as no tapes from either film were in the MGM vault.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98 plus shipping

CD will ship by the end of August – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Good afternoon from Birmingham-

Well, it's almost time to leave after a great two days.  On Friday I mostly walked around Birmingham--I've never seen so many restaurants and shops in one place!  Apparently there has been a lot of development in the last few years.
Title: Re: FULL STOP
Post by: KevinH on July 04, 2010, 04:14:47 AM
They've developed the area near the canal, and there are a couple of shopping streets (pedestrian mall-type).   But I'm not much of a shopper, so I didn't spend a lot of time there.

The concert was at 7:30 pm at Symphony Hall, which is really spectacular.  The Birmingham Symphony Orchestra was conducted by John Wilson, who's only in his 30's.  He's a very dramatic conductor, almost athletic in his movements (not that I have much knowledge of these things).

What can I say about the performances?  Just terrific--I had never seen Kim Criswell before, but had heard her on a couple of recordings.  And Brent was wonderful, as usual.

They sang songs from all the Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, including a "hidden gem," as Kim said, from Pipe Dream, called "Everybody's Got a Home But Me."  I was familiar with it from The Musicality of Rodgers and Hammerstein CD.  Kim did a great job on that song.
Title: Re: FULL STOP
Post by: KevinH on July 04, 2010, 04:30:49 AM
Brent and Kim did an excerpt from Carousel---the dialogue leading up to "If I Loved You."  They did songs from Cinderella--"Ten Minutes Ago" and "Impossible.

The orchestra did a specatular version of "March of the Siamese Children" from the King and I.

I think the highlight of Act 1 was "Some Enchanted Evening," again with some of the dialogue leading up to it and performed as in South Pacific (with Nellie singing a little with Emile).
Title: Re: FULL STOP
Post by: KevinH on July 04, 2010, 04:34:37 AM
Act 2 began with the orchestra playing a medley of songs from The Sound of Music.  Kim and Brent came out and led a sing-a-long version of "The Lonely Goatherd."  Brent was funny with the different voices for each character--the girl, her mother, etc.

The original Maria from the West End Sound of Music was in the audience (don't remember her name) and Kim asked her to take a bow.
Title: Re: FULL STOP
Post by: KevinH on July 04, 2010, 04:38:58 AM
I'm trying to remember the other songs, but one that stands out is Brent's rendition of "Soliloquy" from Carousel, which earned him a rousing ovation.
Title: Re: FULL STOP
Post by: KevinH on July 04, 2010, 04:40:53 AM
They closed the show with "Edelweiss" and "Climb Every Mountain."  And the encore was a reprise of "It's a Grand Night for Singing."

I think I'm running out of time on the computer--to be continued!

I watched JAWS yesterday afternoon.

I hadn't seen it for perhaps 8-10 years.

It is really one of the great action-thrillers.  It holds up extremely well.

Even though I knew it was coming, I still jumped during that underwater sequence when the dead body pops out from the boat at Richard Dreyfuss.

Good morning, all! I slept late, really late, after I decided at 7:15 to go back to sleep for a while. When I decided to move, it was 10:45. Late sleeping for me is usually around 9 am.

I have absolutely no plans today, I may watch 1776, since I love the film and I have not yet seen the release with the "Cool Conservative Men" number back in the film. I most likely will continue now with Season Two of ELI STONE. I was enjoying Season One, thinking I could take it or leave it, when I got to the last three episodes and found myslef blubbering like a baby. I'm still mystified by what exactly it was that grabbed me, but something did.

I also have a bit of work on my Victor Herbert projects, and I may go out and enjoy the quiet of the Upper West Side; everyone seems to have left town for the long weekend and I like that.

Some guy at All That Chat posts "I have the original CD release and the new recording" (of Promises) - how is this one superior?  Sometimes I just scratch my head, because if he reads the posts in the thread he will see clearly how it's superior and that the previous release isn't even the original LP mix.

I hated waiting so long but I really didn't want to read it when I felt so lousy, small paperbacks were easier.

I think that is an understatement. :(

Oh good grief.  Just talked to my mom, my brother and his family are at the lake but won't walk in the house or speak to my mother.  They went straight to their boat and went sailing.  This is beyond rude and it's all over nothing.
Your brother should practice a bit more tolerance towards her. I'm sure she doesn't deserve this.

We went into town after the parade and enjoyed the band performance in the park.  We found a shaded rock to sit on that partially hid us from the dog police.  There were so many dogs today I don't think they would have bothered us.  There were tons of people.  Sherlock was very good while walking through the crowds in the food and craft area.  O course lots of people stopped to pet and admire him.  He enjoyed visiting with some of the other dogs.

Last night I watched the second act of A STAR IS BORN on Blu and Ray.
Gorgeous transfer.
Marvelous movie.
Judy Garland was robbed.  By SIX-COUNT-'EM-SIX VOTES!  Something that close should have at least been a tie.

I loved it when Judy Garland, on either The Tonight Show or The Jack Parr Show, told the story of Oscar night for A STAR IS BORN.  She had just given birth to Joey Luft and she was still in the hospital on the day of the Oscars.  They brought in a whole crew and equipment to her hospital room, got her makeup done and a lovely bed jacket on her.  The minute it was announced that she hadn't won the Oscar, everybody packed up and walked out without saying another word to her.

BK, once again I have to say thank you for what you have done for, at least, one PROMISES PROMISES fan.  The CD is incredible and that moron who can't  tell the difference should be put in a home.  I never before realized that I tended to tighten up each time Jerry Orbach was going for a note and not quite hitting it.  I am sure that Mr. Orbach's family will certainly be grateful for what you have done for his memory.

So, why are they mad at your mom? I must have missed something. I saw that a niece (or girlfriend of a nephew) got sick in Sam's car. I must have missed whatever offense your mother committed.

My mother and I decided not to tell Sam when she arrived at the house.  We checked the car after I had cleaned it out and it didn't smell, so we just decided to say nothing.  That's my crime.  They figured it out, I'm sure my nephew told them and Sam had a fit because we didn't tell her.  When Sam was ranting about it, mom said "Well you shouldn't have fed her all the wine and cigarettes" My mom makes comments like that, but apparently her comment really upset Sam.  She's not mad at the girl who got sick, just mom and I.  I talked to my brother yesterday and he said that's it, I wasn't honest (a sin of omission apparently) and my mom made a comment.

I'm outraged at their behavior. I get that they think I should have told her right away. Fine, but the rest of it is just so blown out of proportion. I'm done dealing with this drama over nothing.   Mom said they think we are evil witches...I said she can't be, she doesn't like to fly.

I don't really care if they want to disrespect me, I can just blow them off, but the way they continue to disrespect my mother is something I have decided not to tolerate any more.

Oh yes, the National Holiday is on.  I am not thrilled about taking a day without pay, but if it keeps the state from laying-off people full time, it is worth it to me.  And as you mentioned, a lot of states' employees have had it worse than what we are gettiing.

I've spent the early evening on the first four episodes of ELI STONE Season 2. I think I will have a little soup and take my meds. I was just looking at a calendar for 2006. At this time then I was in Ohio dealing with another of my dad's ER crises after the chemotherapy nearly destroyed him. July 5 was on a Wednesday in 2006; it's a memorable day because it was the day the drunken Macbeths showed their true ugly colors to my dad and did their best to kick me around and assert my deserving no inheritance from my dad. It's one of my most memorable holidays.

I still hate them.

Got a phone call from my buddy Mark in Wyoming. His brother-in-law Kyle was in a terrible car accident today. Kyle is a police officer and was on duty when an out of control car hit his patrol car head on.

Kyle's police dog was killed and Kyle is in the hospital with a broken neck, among other injuries. At this point it is unknown if Kyle will be able to walk again. That was as much info as Mark had as of yet.

Kyle just lost his wife Cherly (Mark's sister) to cancer last year.

Kyle and Cherly visited Oregon several times when Mark was living here...that couple always would crack me up, and they were both very supportive of Mark when he came out of the closet about 7 years ago.

Happy 3rd AND 4th! Tonight we went to the largest fireworks show in the southeast, at Lenox Square. We walked from our house to a neighborhood next to the mall and settled in among the residents. If you drive to this event it takes hours to get out of the traffic to get home, so it was really fun to enjoy it without dealing with traffic. We had a great view without a big crowd of people.

I do not understand why people don't lock their dogs in if they're living where fireworks can be heard. When we lived in Marietta, almost every year we ended up with a lost dog that had run away from the fireworks up on the square.
Even our cats hid today when they heard fireworks.

We had leftovers from the big celebration last night. Some friends of ours who have a beautiful old historic home in Marietta have a big party every year. Greg and a few other friends get together and play music for the party. They've been practicing for months for this, but as usual, they end up as background music because everyone talks to friends they haven't seen all year. There are lots of good cooks in this group of friends, including some with superb vegetable gardens, so we came home with some nice veggies. We got home at 2AM this morning, so that's why I was E&T on the 3rd.

It's always a challenge to decide what to make. I ended up fixing a recipe I've used before. It's supposed to make 6-8 servings but I added another half recipe. Well, it made TONS of servings and I keep forgetting it does that. Everyone liked it a lot and several people tracked me down for the recipe, but I still ended up with enough to send home with half a dozen folks.

I made sesame noodles with asparagus tips. It's a good dish for an outdoor party because you don't have to worry about anything going bad if it sits out for awhile.

Someone sent me a link to some stupid site offering my Promises CD 2 for free download.  I just wrote them a VERY strong letter and hopefully it will be down by tomorrow.

For some reason, I used to be able to type the word "from", but now, every time, it comes out "form". Is this something that comes with age? It's really annoying.

Did I mention that I got an AARP card in the mail and I'm only going to be 49?  It asked me to join so I could learn how to enjoy my life after 50.  LOL, not only am I not 50, but I'm not trying to figure out what to do with my life when I turn 50.  They will not get my money now...maybe later...not now

Age has nothing to do with it.  "Recording" is a word that I ALWAYS type the first time as "recroding" and I type "usual" as "ususal."  I know not why.
