Post by: bk on July 05, 2010, 11:36:58 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were accompanied by Otto Harp's Autoharp, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently taking Autoharp lessons so they can play the fugue in B minor by Lutz Meyerbrinkenheimer von Stuffel-Becksteinmeuhrer.

Indeed DR CILLA LIZ - the heat and humidity are exacerbated by the planetary activity including but not limited to Uranus in retrograde.

The Uranus retrograde officially occurs at 9:50AM PDT, its influence has been building during the past weekend and its impact can continue easily for the rest of today and for the next few days. All Uranus themes - radical change, innovation, intuition, advances on the cutting edge of science, high technology, the multi-media, aviation, breakthroughs in consciousness, esoteric and occult studies, surprises, shock waves, anxiety, the nervous system, lightning-like realizations, awakenings - are highlighted. With Uranus in charge and also sometimes acting like an alarm clock that won't stop ringing, be on your toes throughout the day and night. Circumstances beyond your control may be attempting to run the show.

Last night DR Jane wrote:

I just think that they should promote it for what it is. Although i didn't know that it was dubbed in English. I'm going to request this from the library and see what the difference is from the French version (where i thought the dubbing was quite good).

Good morning, all! I awoke with a painful lower back around 1:30 this morning and I was awake most of the night in discomfort. Around 3 am, I took one of last year's muscle relaxers and finally passed out some time around 4. I really want to go back to bed, but I have too much to do.

I need to visit the Theatre Collection of the NYPL and I need to think about the rest of my schedule.

Either a piano or a sax.  I always admired people who could entertain at parties just by sitting down at a piano and play just about anything.  And I like saxes cause I like the riffing and jazzing.

Piano artists I like:  Van Cliburn, Vince Guaraldi, Thelonius Monk, Marian Macpartland

Saxaphone artists:  Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane, David Sanborn

We watched THE APARTMENT last night.  After 50 years, it remains one of the great movies.

But, watching it, I kept thinking about PROMISES, PROMISES, which will (hopefully) arrive today.  [Here in Texas, they still, at times, seem to use the Pony Express.]

I was wondering if, for the musical, they revamped the role of "C.C. Baxter," because as great a performer as he was, I can't really Jerry Orbach in that part.

Baxter, as written by Wilder/Diamond and played by Jack Lemmon, is a likable schnook.  Certainly, I can see Sean Hayes playing a schnook and, to a lesser degree, Tony Roberts, who (I believe) I saw do it in Los Angeles 40 years ago.

But, for the life of me, even though he won the Tony for his performance, I cannot see Orbach as a schnook.  [Nor, can I really see Jack Lemmon playing a NY Homicide cop.]

Did anybody here see Orbach do the role?  Did they de-schnook him (i.e. the role)?

We arrived in Rapid City yesterday after a VERY long day of driving, part of which was abated by DW Wife Betsy reading to me from a little book about Mel, Woody, and some other guy.  ;)  We went to Mt. Rushmore after dinner and stayed for the lighting ceremony.  The Ranger did Presidential trivia before the documentary they show, and I seemed to be the only one there with a lot of useless answers in my head.  :)  As much of a tourist trap as it seems to be, it was charming to drive through the little town of Keystone on the way to the monument.  Because it was getting late, we decided not to go see Crazy Horse.

I know you are all waiting with bated breath for my next report, which will probably be from Sioux Falls.

Elmore, here is Percy Faith's second recording of "Delicado".  This one probably doesn't have the Landowska harpsichord, but you can at least hear it.  This one *does* have a great new sax and bone countermelody that Percy didn't have in his original version:

As you know from my book, dear reader Druxy, I saw Orbach many times.  He was, in fact, brilliant in the role and was a lovable shnook - just a different kind of lovable shnook.  The audience ate him up.  In those days he was very good looking and, in fact, looked very different than he did on Law and Order.

I just finished listening to Disk One of Kritzerland's PROMISES, PROMISES and I can hear the difference between this original LP mix and the previous CDs mix.  Much less shriller, more seperation, more low tones.  For that alone, the new release is worth the price.

But now I prepare to immerse myself into Disk Two...

OMG!  BK, PROMISES, PROMISES Disk Two is fantastic!  Loved every second of it!  Everything pops out--the growl of the sax, the electric keyboard and especially the orchestral vocals.  Jerry Orbach now sounds like he's actually performing the songs and not just getting through them.  And the hidden track--what a find!  The perfect bookend to complete the recording.

I think my favorite track right now is TURKEY LURKEY TIME.  I've never been familiar with the lyrics because I never could completely make out what was being sung, but now every word is clear.

Hats off to you on this, BK!  Whatever you have planned for PROMISES, PROMISES, I vote YES now!

I am so glad to be home and in the AC! It is indeed treacherous out. My errands took me first to the barber for a haircut; I did not want to look shabby in Ohio this weekend. While I was waiting for the No. 7 bus at Sixth and 51st, I ran into Jane Klain of the Museum of Broadcasting and we had a nice chat. The neew MTA schedule is ridiculous for transport; the bus stop where I was wating has three buses stopping there, and I waited 15 minutes before any bus showed up. While I waited, three Limited Stop No. 5 uses drove past me since they don't stop there.

Then to the NYPL, where I will continue to look at OZ materials tomorrow after the McGlinnventory.

DR Thom, welcome to the group. Tell us more about yourself, what you do, what part of the country you inhabit, etc.

Jerry Ohrbach was wonderful and totally charming in PROMISES PROMISES. I saw him in the show on a Friday night in August 1969, and I saw 1776 on the following Saturday matinee. Can it be that his performance of "She Likes Basketball" from the Tony Awards of 1969 isn't on Youtube?  He was equally wonderful and menacing in the 1966 Lincoln Center production of CAROUSEL. In fact, I think when I met him, he was more like Chuck Baxter in real life than any of his other characters, sweet, charming, very nice.

Tonight is my first meeting on the Historical Preservation Commission as a commission member.  I'm presenting the guidelines I've been working on - not finished, just a work in progress.  I had been led to believe that they weren't at all what people wanted. But this morning, a member of the group I quit who really didn't talk to me about anything much stopped me to say that the work I did on the guidelines was incredible.  I have to say, whether he's right or wrong makes absolutely no difference to me, I needed to hear something good today and when it comes from someone who has no need to say anything at all, it means even more.

I found my LP OBC for Promises Promises the other day.  Now I'm kicking myself for not ordering before Kritzerland sold out.  Guess I was a little caught up in the meatgrinder of family drama

Cilla, BK has mentioned that he holds back some copies for just such emergencies.

The piano is my choice also. The closest that I ever got to playing the piano was when I played the accordion back in the 1950's. When I went to sell the accordion in the 1970's, the accordion dealer did not want it. So when he stepped into his back room, I left his shop, leaving the accordion setting on his store floor.

DR Jane, the first episode of HOT IN CLEVELAND aired here last night. I thought that Betty White stole the show.  I didn't love it. But I did love the scenes that she was in. Such a hoot. I know that you said that you didn't really enjoy Valerie Bertinelli, but I quite enjoyed her.

I said she is the weak link in the cast.  I like her best in the first episode.  I'll be interested in what you think about the show by the 3rd episode.

I liked VB in the first episode.

I liked her best in that episode.  I still like her I just think the other women are much stronger.  I like the cast.  Unfortunately the scripts have been going downhill.

If your profit margin is better with one disc, I'd do a release of one disc and bill it as the newly remixed version (that's what you called disc 2, right?).  I would guess that most of the people who really want both discs to compare probably ordered right away.

Our timing was good as they received three DVD's back from us today.  The Girl was the first movie shipped.  I also kept checking my queue for a release date.  As soon as it showed one I was able to move it to the top of my queue.  I have found doing that often results in our watching a brand new DVD.

Here's my thought on Promises - I had no idea it would go this quickly.  And I know there are others who, as the word gets out, are going to want it badly.  So, I have two options, both of which require me to re-license the title, which is no problem (or just add to the contract we've already done since I actually have the rights for three years).  I can do a "second edition" of the two CD set, also limited to 1000 copies, OR I can do a release of only disc two, limited to 1000 copies.  Either way, we'll only probably sell a couple hundred right away (which will pay for the repressing and re-licensing), but I don't mind if I have the rest for a year or two, just so people can get it.  What do you all think?

I think that is a terrific idea.  AS word gets out among musical theater fanatics about this CD, people will be clammering to get a copy.

I think the two CD set is wonderful, but if the cost is prohibitive, the single CD is better than nothing.

It's a toss-up, cost-wise.  If I keep it two CDs then all I have to do is change the inlay card - one line - to read SECOND EDITION.  Everything else is done, so there's only the licensing and pressing and printing costs - doing a two CD set is more costly in terms of the pressing, but not prohibitively so.  If I were to do just CD 2, then I have to redo the booklet to remove the stuff about CD 1, and I have to have a new master created with a new release number - so it's actually easier to do the double CD - that said, what I don't want is a bunch of people attacking us for doing a subsequent pressing on a limited edition - in other words, some people probably got a few extra copies to keep as an investment.  That's the only downside to this, but again, it will say second edition.

What a fantastic review!  I don't know much about these things, but would Broadway World, or Playbill, or whoever the top banana is; would they run a story about a second printing?  And he said the same thing that I did about CHRISTMAS DAY.

When I checked the status this morning on NetFlix it said "very long wait" for THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO.  I just received email it has been shipped and should arrive tomorrow!!  :D

I hope you like it. Just remember there is a lot of violence. I think when I watch the English version I am going to fast forward thru the violent parts (since i've already seen them). It was just too violent for me and I suspect it will be too violent for you.

I just found this Chicago publicity photo of Elsie Janis and Montgomery & Stone in THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER. It's a very strange photo. David montgomery is on the left and Fred Stone is on the right. Miss Janis and her mother, like Rose and the Hovick girls, had their sapphic side. That means lesbian, Mikey!

My Aunt Ruth was from Lesbia.

It might not be.  My brother didn't complain & I think he is bothered more by violence than I am.  Because of Keith we watch a lot of action movies.  I hope I am right. ;D

TOD: Piano and bassoon. I always loved the deep, rich sound of a bassoon. Can't think of any bassoon virtuosi, however.

Sorry, I'm so late in joining in today. I'd like to second DR Elmore's request of "A Time for Singing," but I also think that you should go with the publicity you're getting for "Promises" and sell a few hundred more copies. Maybe leave off the surprise track on Disc Two of the second edition.

T.O.D.

Without a doubt, piano.  Although I did play the bassoon in school, John.  My mother was a vocal music teacher and she taught piano at home.  Naturally, I refused to take lessons from her.  Still she always hounded me to practice, so, of course, I never did.  Now I regret the ability to play.

I love Roger Williams.  Wow, could that man sweat.  And Ferrante and Teicher made it cool to play the piano.

Well, we have arrived in Sioux Falls, slightly ahead of "tornadic activity."  I had never heard the phrase "tornadic activity" until we turned on the tv and heard it repeated several times on an urgent news break-in.

Cilla, sorry--you must have posted after we turned off the computer or I would have answered this morning.  Yes, we're staying here overnight, then off to Wisconsin Dells tomorrow and then finally up north.

Bruce, we are having a very enjoyable ride as DW Wife Betsy reads your very charming and entertaining book out loud.  We're up to your second Partridge Family episode.  DW Wife Betsy *did* notice one other typo (not the Carol Merrill one) if you want to know for your second printing.

The Ryko guy now acknowledges that the Ryko (and Varese) release was a remix.  He denies, however, that Ryko itself did the remix and that MGM was responsible - that is, I'm sure, true.

Greetings from Ohio - we are glad to be home after a fun, but too short, trip to Michigan.  Left Lansing about 9:30am and got to A2 (Ann Arbor) about 11.  Drove past the stadium to see all the construction, then around Central Campus, which looks great!  We had lunch at Zingerman's (thought of you, DR Jane), drove out through North Campus, where I lived all through undergrad, and headed to Dayton.  We go to Sinclair CC just in time for Rob's appointment with career services and home for pizza.  He's now tutoring DN Lauren for her sports physics class.  One of the problems starts out, "Tonya crashes into Nancy while they're practicing their figure skating routines..."

First of all, I think it's wonderful that you're getting the kind of response where you're able to consider reprinting more copies of any of your titles.   But I feel that the re-issue should be somewhat different than the original limited edition.  I vote for having the second edition be only disc two (but at the same price).  I'm sure that that's what most people would want, anyway...the "corrected" disc in show order.  I only bought one copy, so it's not an investment issue for me, just my opinion that a "limited edition" should be limited.

LOL regarding the question.

The first time I went to Zingerman's I was a bit underwhelmed.  I have appreciated it much more since moving here.  I have had such wonderful treats shipped to us, and when visiting Bryan purchased even more treats to stock Bryan's apartment for us.   We would make a meal of bread and cheeses and side dishes.

The tutoring session was almost derailed when Mary Linda called Rob and, via speaker phone, they asked Lauren to be in the wedding party.  She went berserk for a while, called her mom, and then (amazingly) settled back down to problem-solving.

I had the Georgia Reuben - turkey, swiss cheese, cole slaw, Russian dressing.  And, of course, a Dr. Brown's Creme Soda.  The only time I drink sugary soda is at a deli that has Dr. Brown's.

No problem. Tornadic activity happens a lot here.  I had a meeting after work and probably couldn't have gotten up there until after 8:30, so it wouldn't really have worked anyway.  If you're going to stop there on the way back, let me know and I could drive up and meet you for dinner.

...what I don't want is a bunch of people attacking us for doing a subsequent pressing on a limited edition - in other words, some people probably got a few extra copies to keep as an investment.

Is there any industry history of subsequent pressings of Limited Editions?

NO SPOILERS

I thought it was great. Not how I thought the people or places would look, but I got past that very quickly.  I got into it so much that for a while I thought they were speaking English.  I love it when that happens.  It was violent, but I anticipated more based on the book
