Title: THE TRENCH COAT
Post by: bk on July 07, 2010, 12:04:51 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were very trench coat-like, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently in the trenches with trench mouth and no coats.

Good morning, all! I fell into bed at 10 and slept until 6:30. This morning I've got another session with the McGlinnventory followed by the NYPL. When I get back, depending on the heat, I have a bit of laundry to do, but I may put it off until tomorrow. I also need to contact the airlines about Friday's flight; I'm on a shuttle to Canton and I have no idea which airline is the agent for AirTran Airways!

I'm still against a 2nd printing, but that not my decision.

I have little other news, so I guess I will sign off for now.

Good morning all. Well as a kid one of my favorite comic strips was Dick Tracy. Attached is a replica of a 9 foot bronze sculpture of Dick Tracy that was dedicated April 11, 2010, in Naperville, Illinois. Tracy is wearing his yellow trench coat, and yes BK he "wears a hat."  I think BK should buy a yellow trench coat.

If you have six actors who know their lines and one actor who doesn't, what do you have?

Blithe Spirit.....

http://www.bannergraphic.com/story/1647679.html

And you can always tell when the lines are gone because the volume drops and the voice becomes almost inaudible......and there's always a reason.....yes not getting the right cue can cause you to skip two pages.....or if someone else in the middle of your ramblings tries to get you back on track.....don't start making up things to "cover" for them.....just learn the damned lines.

It's not disastrous, but it is demoralizing......will not cast her again in anything....live and learn.

We open tomorrow night.

This reminds me of a story.

Back in Bellevue, WA, I directed a production of CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF.  There is a scene in the 3rd act where all the characters are on stage, they hear a loud cry of pain (offstage) from "Big Daddy" and they react to it.

At this particular performance, I was standing in the back of the audience...and the loud cry of pain didn't come.  The actors started to ad-lib, because the play couldn't really continue without that cry.

 :o

I rushed out the front door of the theater, ran down to the stage door, opened it, stuck my head in and gave out with the loudest cry of pain that you've ever heard in your life.

The performance continued.

 ;D

Brilliant, DR Druxy.

Where was the voice at the time?

We were doing Williams' original 3rd act, the one in which "Big Daddy" does not appear on stage.

He was sitting offstage, following in the script, but his thumb was covering the cue where he was supposed to moan.

He was a marvelous "Big Daddy," though.

When I'm done with them, I'll send them to you.   Not having design review, they are really more recommendations than binding guidelines, so they are less technical and more direct. Unless you want to review them now and give me some advice.

I'm awake!  Last night, I did a pal a favor and played a rehearsal of Urinetown! for him.  I hadn't looked at that score for 4 years and didn't have much time to prepare.  It's such a great show, and eventually it all came back to me, but it was rough!!   Tonight is a run through and then I'm done.  He's a really great guy and his cast is stellar.  However, the MD is useless.  The director is also a musician and an MD in his own right, so it's really frustrating for him.  I know the show will be great, but I'm sorry that he has to deal with the useless MD (who doesn't play piano!!!)

I see state workers wearing trench coats quite often during the fall and winter, here in Salem.

Perhaps there isn't much call for it in sunny L.A.

Although, I notice in old movies that place in L.A women wear fur coats and men wear suits...and wouldn't they all bake to death in that heat???

I really don't think you'll have a problem with the casting because it's a foreign film. They are all unknowns.  And everybody in the film looks like a real person (not like a beauty). I could not believe when i first watched it that various actors had pock marks on their faces and other things.

I am usually very picky. When i read a book vs the movie casting. But in this case i just went with the cast and there was nobody that i couldn't believe in their part.

My mother who was from England ...

One of the gals in my Cardiac Rehab group is from England - and is a big soccer fan and was always rushing home to catch the pre-noon World Cup telecasts.

She is now rooting against Germany; she says - "I really don't like the Germans".

Of course she is 84 and was still living in England during the war (The real war - WWII) so I can understand a lingering lack of affection for the Germans.

I was vacuuming the car when the Jehovas began circling the street. They parked in front of my house and chatted for a while. I went inside, because I didn't know who they were or what they were doing. Finally they got out and began going door-to-door, my door being first. I have a handwritten sign that says, "Day sleeper, please do not knock" that almost always works. They knew I was home and was awake, so they stood outside my door for about twenty minutes waiting for me to come back outside. Luckily, the front bedroom has a nice view of the sidewalk, so I could see when they left my house and later the street.

So, I just wandered over to say hello to the next-door-neighbor, who is digging more dirt again. I so very nicely mentioned that the city cites me for the dirt piles against my fence in the alley. He said he thought the city was moving it. I believe I was nice enough so that he won't "get even" with me. I know that some of the neighbors are reporting each other to the City Yard Police, and I don't want to be involved in that.

I am always amazed at the tid-bits of knowledge I gain from having Fox News on in the background - we listeners were just now informed that Cleveland was in Ohio. Ohio! Imagine that.

You are such a tease!

Arizona is becoming a very paranoid state. Perhaps they suspect the piles of dirt are the result of illegal aliens digging their way into your yard.

I see state workers wearing trench coats quite often during the fall and winter, here in Salem.

Perhaps there isn't much call for it in sunny L.A.

Although, I notice in old movies that place in L.A women wear fur coats and men wear suits...and wouldn't they all bake to death in that heat???

Their mantra was, "It is better to look good than to feel good."

I'm having one terrible afternoon; I asked our invoice person for the Herbert-Kern project to check into invoices last week since I figured the office in California would be closed Monday and I had no idea when our invoices would be paid. From his email today, i'm not sure if the invoices have been processed at all now and I'm not only pissed, i'm about to be overdrawn, and I may have on Friday morning no money to get me to La Guardia, much less to Ohio. Or back, for that matter, since we many not see wire transfers before Monday. I'm debating my next action because, if I can find no one to lend me a bit of cash, I cannot take the plane to Ohio. Do I cancel the trip?

What i want to do is kill my colleague. Violently.

I would be curious to watch it both ways.

I downloaded a rental from Amazon on my Roku.  It was the first time I did an Amazon rental so I had a $10 credit and got it free.  It's usually $2.99 to rent.  You download and can watch it for 3 days, but you have to pick how you want to view it and you don't get the specials, just the movie.  You do get it immediately however

That's my plan.   We have two tvs and I wanted to watch on the larger one which is easier to read the subtitles.  Keith said it will be cooler in the bedroom with the air on so we will watch in there.  I'm not telling him there is a dubbed option.  If he sees it I know he will pick it.  Did you have any trouble with the subtitles being too fast?

I think it is interesting how the serial killer in L.A. was caught.  The son was arrested and his DNA was a close match.  The police then collected the DNA off a coffee mug, of his father, used at a restaurant.  It was a match to the killer's DNA.

No, actually I meant to mention that the timing of the subtitles was very good. I didn't feel like I missed anything. I am a fast reader, but the words were all centered on the screen, not too many at one time and I thought it made it easier to both read and see the screen at the same time.

I should wear my distance glasses when I watch tv, instead I leave on my progressive lenses in order to see when I look away from the tv.  The glasses make it harder to read, still I like to hear the actors voices.

I'm wondering if the sequel films will deal more with that issue. I found it odd, until I considered the length of the film and them just realized that it wasn't quite as important as other aspects of the story.

But you have to watch it on your computer instead of on your tv?  I would not like this part.

No, the Roku http://www.roku.com/roku-products is a little thing that connects to my TV and my wireless network in the house.  So the movie is downloaded and plays on the tv

I'm curious what you both think about one major plot point that was changed from the book.
1. Erika was barely in the movie (mikael's sometime lover and owner of millenium). She was only in it at the beginning and end, they never showed her visiting him, or even them being lovers.
2.And because of #1 i remember near the end of the book lisbeth saw mikael and erika kissing and she freaked when she realized she loved him. But none of this happened in the movie. Which is sort of weird because this seemed sort of important for the book. one two three four and then there were more one two three dour and then there were more

CONTINUED SPOILER

DON'T READ ANYMORE IF YOU DON"T WANT TO KNOW
I noticed it and the fact that they left out his tryst with the Cecelia Vanger.  The relationships really are pretty irrelevant to the plot if you take this movie as one isolated movie.  You knew there was something going on with Erika at the beginning, just not what it was.  It didn't bother me at all.  I rather liked it this way.

I never cared for that version of CAT.  I think I got spoiled by that great scene between Brick and Big Daddy in the film.

Keith called me today and I found it very annoying to pull over to the side of the completely deserted road just to answer the phone.  I could have answered & stopped at the stop sign to finish my conversation only I was afraid a police car would pull up.

Keith found out that professional drivers are exempt from the law and may use cell phones while driving.  I doubt texting is part of the exemption.  He discovered this while getting his car fixed when the driver shuttling him to Costco answered the phone.

Thanks...I think I got a bit of information that I hadn't thought about before.  But mainly it was Josh Anderson (the director/music director of The Brain) giving advice.  Most of the other people were somewhat experienced in theater and (probably) auditioning, but only a couple were seasoned musical theater performers, so a lot of good information was given out.  It was good to hear a lot of it at one time, though. :)
