MTM - gosh I loved that show and the original Bob Newhart show

Chuckles the Clown yes - any of the ones with the Happy Homemaker... oh and there were one or 2 with Jack Cassidy as Ted Baxter's brother

AITF = Sammy Davis  with the kiss   there was one where Jean Staepelton was going on nd on and on telling this boring story and Carrol O'Connor mimes  takingout a gun, loading it, and shooting himself in the head and falling over that was hysterically funny

Equipoise is the state of being balanced or in equilibrium, usually connoting something that is a product of counterbalancing.

Equipoise may also refer to:

Equipoise (album), a 1993 album by Happy Rhodes
Equipoise (horse), a thoroughbred race horse
Clinical equipoise, or the Principle of Equipoise, a medical research term
Equipoise (denture), a removable partial denture system
Equipoise (law), a legal term referring to a balancing test of aggravating and mitigating factors when jurors consider the death penalty
Equipoise (poetry), a poetic term
Equipoise (propeller), a type of propeller
the trade name for the anabolic steroid boldenone
Equipoise (Game), An arena based FPS game like Unreal tournament 3.

Good morning, all! I keep missing my trip to the pharmacy, so I'm doing it this morning on my way down to the McGlinnventory.

I have the inventory this morning, a stop at Toyland to pick up some music, and then back here to accomplish some work on edit problems from my copyists.

TOD: I loved ALL IN THE FAMILY more than the Mary Tyler Mooore show, but I still remember th episode of the death of Chuckles the Clown from MTM and nothing about ALL IN THE FAMILY!

Chuckles the Clown was great TV, but I also loved the dinner party episodes on MTM, such as the one in which Lou took two and half portions of the dinner and there were no seconds back in the kitchen.

I also found the later episode in which Mary and Lou had a "date" to be really funny.

My favorite supporting player was always Cloris Leachman as Phyllis, and the timing of her reactions was particularly wonderful.

I watched "All in the Family" a lot and loved the episodes that had the neighbors (the Jeffersons) or family (Maude) drop in. The people who were on the show, from Betty Garrett to Sammy Davis Jr., were always great.

Mary Tyler Moore--  the first episode (among so many others)

All in the Family-- don't really haveone although the episode where everyone argued about lima beans and being allergic to them was a riot  (I have no idea what the main plot of that episode was)

A couple of my favorite shows......

In addition to those episodes mentioned:

MTM - the obituary episode when they wrote a joke obit for someone and forgot it was in the file, and Ted read it on the air
the all night election report when the teletype was broken and they couldn't get the results

ALL IN THE FAMILY - Gloria buys a wig at Kressler's, a station wagon full of nuns, and Archie & Mike stuck in the basement

It must be a week for finishing books--I finally got through the Charles M. Schulz bio on the train this morning.  Very sad.  For all his success, his fame and his wealth, for all the happiness he instilled in the fans of his Peanuts, the man lived a life of bitterness and regret and never truly felt he was ever loved by anyone to the very end.

As for the book itself, I found it to be wildly uneven.  The author, David Michaelis, goes into such minute details in many aspects of Schulz's life but almost totally ignores others.  For instance, I've learned more about the husband of the woman who was the life model of the Little Red Headed Girl than of most of Schulz's own children, who remain ciphers throughout the book.  Also, Michaelis takes a few tangents from biography and slips into analyzing the Peanuts strip.  While what he has to say about it is interesting, he pretty much ignores the early years of the strip along with any discussion of some of the major characters like Peppermint Patty.

All in all, I guess I'm glad that I read it even though my feelings about its subject have been vastly altered (Charles M. Schulz was one of my childhood heroes.)  I feel a need to go back and read the Peanuts collections to remind myself that I fell in love with the work and not the man.

TOD:

THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW
Certainly the Chuckles episode, but also the episode where Mary has a bad day and the one where Rhoda enters (an wins!) a beauty contest.

ALL IN THE FAMILY
"Edith Goes Through the Change" contains what I think is one of the best lines ever written for TV comedy:   "We're not going to Disney World--or any other world!"

I mostly enjoyed the episode in which only the four principle players appeared such as the one where Gloria is having her "time of month" which sets off a chain of arguments.

DR RonP, re: BIG BROTHER and your comments last night.

Right now my favorites are Brendan and Rachel.  I am finding that they seem smart. And a bunch who seem dumb are getting on my nerves.

There is this girl Kristen who they showed last night. But other than 2 words she has never spoken on the show! I find Lane and Hayden seem sort of dumb. And Enzo gets on my nerves too. I loved the "smart" comp last night. And i love that Andrew purposely misspelled his word (since he is a doctor - except to them he's a shoe salesman).

Annie is getting on my nerves. And actually andrew is too.  I wish we could see more of matt and ragan (although to me they look similar) and keep getting their jobs mixed up since Ragan is a professor but they keep calling matt "the smart one".

Thursday morning greetings!  Since we were away almost a week, I think it's time for grocery shopping.  That's my major agenda item for today, along with a meeting of my book group tonight.  It's a Graphic Novel Roundtable and it will be fun to see 1) the variety of selections, and 2) what my friends thought of the genre.  I read Stitches by David Small.  It's set in Detroit during the time I grew up and from the illustrations it appears that his family's house was identical to mine.

TOD:

MTM -- Chuckles Bites the Dust, especially the desciption of what happened to him at the parade.  Also the one where Mary gets her first look at Sue Ann's bedroom!

All in the Family:  The menopause episode...and that memorable moment where Edith yells at Archie to "stifle"; the Bea Arthur episode in which Maude appears and declares, looking down her nose at Archie, "Never fear, Maudie's here!"; and the episode in which Archie has the runs...and keeps having to race back up the stairs before completing a rant of any kind.

TOD - I was young, single, and living in my own apartment at the same time MTM was airing on Saturday nights.  It always amused me that I either lived like MTM (when I had a date) or watched MTM (when I didn't have a date).  One of my favorite episodes was when she moved to her new apartment and, after all the excitement died down, she stood alone in the middle of the living room and wailed, "I hate it!"

Someone "reviewed" my book on Goodreads - someone in the UK.  He really liked it, but says that he didn't like the writing that much (my inexperience as an author despite having written other books).  So, that was interesting.  I do have a certain, shall we say, style and voice and I guess some probably find it not to their liking.  But he liked the stories and the point, so that's good.

The Sammy Davis Jr episode of AITF was definately not one of my favorites.  Even way back then it struck me as an implausable incident within the world the show had created for itself.  If the phrase was existant then, it would have been a "jumping the shark" episode.

What I used to love was way back in the 80s when Channel 4 in NYC would show two back-to-back episodes of MTM at 3:00 am.  It was the perfect way to wind down after a night out in the city.

DR Ginny, thanks for the Tom Howard obituary. What a sad surprise. I think he was a person who should have left Middletown a long time ago.  He was talented and a good person, and I did plan on visiting with him on my next trip to Ohio. I was surprised by the news about a son and wife; when I moved to NYC in 1979, he was gay. Or bi.

Good guess.  As good as any, at any rate.   I still have a tingle that it may be the lady police officer.  She seemed really distraught about possibly being targeted for a nomination.

However, I suspect them ALL!   I also suspect the claim the saboteur made in last night's episode is just something to make them all paranoid.  I don't think any of them knew one another prior to entering the house.

I'm always amused at how outraged and angry guy alliances get when they suspect "others" of being in an alliance.  "The Brigade" is beside itself that friendships have formed among the other houseguests...so much so that everyone cannot be trusted!!!!

Film Score Monthly has announced a new 3-CD set:  "Bronislau Kaper at MGM (1954-1962) -- Volume 1".

Although you'd get the idea that it's odds and ends, really  scores (possibly not complete) from films like "The Power and the Prize", "Her 12 Men", "Somebody Up There Likes Me", "Ada", "Two Loves", and, of course, "BUtterfield 8".  In addition to cues from the film scores written by Kaper, the CDs feature source music used in the various films.

I was not thrilled with the bio either. I know many people who make others laugh are often depressed or otherwise downhearted. But I had a problem with the writing. So there's little known about Schulz's early years. Why not say so, instead of analyzing a family photograph and trying to interpret how that fits in with a rather lame theory on the man's life. The author spent way too much time on a single photo as his only source for the early years and ended up with way too much conjecture.

In other words, too much Michaelis and not enough Schulz.

DR Ginny. It's been years since I was in your town. And I can't remember asking this before, but is either Chardelle Webber or Iona (last name escapes me) still with us? They were the newspaper's gossip/hometown news writers for years. Iona's column was called Incidentally.

DR John G - As far as I can determine, Iona is still around, but I have a vague recollection that Chardy passed away.  She and my late mother-in-law were friends, which helped my wedding picture get a nice placement in the paper the morning after the event.  I will try to verify my speculations and get back to you.  There's really very little local "presence" to the Journal any more.

My helper and I got everything done that needed doing - did the royalty statement, did the publishing stuff, did the Costco run (and I now have pretty roses in the house and lots of low cal low fat snacks for my sweet tooth), and shipped a few things.  After she left, I picked up a couple of packages and no mail, then ate a sandwich and onion rings.  I'm full, I'm tired, and since I got the Warners noir box I think I'll watch a movie or three.

Sorry to hear that about the Journal. I can now look back fondly on my year there. There were many great experiences, from all the Cincinnati Reds games I saw courtesy the paper to just being with good people, several of whom I'm still in touch with. It probably wasn't the best job for a young someone who wanted to be in a much livelier environment at that time.

Be very careful of e-mails from paypal - if it seems at all suspicious (saying you ordered something for ninety bucks of thereabouts) and that it wants you to visit your account, do not click on any of the links from the e-mail directly.  I've gotten several of these today - for me it was easy to tell it was fake because it went to an address I never use for amazon stuff.  So, if you have ANY question or doubt, go to amazon directly and NOT through the e-mail links.

Yeah, getting off these pages these days is like pulling teeth.  I blame FJL, who should at least stop by and say hello and let us know he's fine, and I certainly blame Jose - not to mention JMK.  I do think I know why Jose left - and I wish someone had at least e-mailed me about it (I don't think it had anything to do with me and/or the site, but with another problem - and somehow I think someone here probably knew about it).  But he's happy in his own little Jose World on Facebook.  Of course, that negates the, what, oh seven years of support and kindness that he got on this board, but who's counting.

That is the impression that they give when you buy one, but once you read the instructions, you find out that you have to vent these things to the outside.  You could vent it out a slider, or in my case, out the bedroom window.

I read th esummary online - it sounds too sad for me to read
It is sad, but I don't remember exactly being depressed by it. It's been more than 12 years since I read it. I know I was living in Florida at the time. I also remember seeing Gaines at a reading here in San Antonio and meeting him afterward for a second. Great reading, and it was from "A Lesson ..." He had the packed house mesmerized with the passage he chose.

There's a great new autobiography with a title like "There's Mel, There's Woody and There's You." The author's name was Bruce something.

I'm also slowly pacing myself as I read through the Little House books for the first time. There's a great deal of food stuff in them but there's also the wonderful stories of life in America before the cities took over. Plus, in this heat, it's been fun to read about chopping ice when it's 5 below zero outside and sledding, etc.

Has anyone read "A Lesson Before Dying" by Ernest Gaines?  It is not a self help book, at least I don't think it is.
 http://www.amazon.com/Lesson-Before-Dying-Oprahs-Book/dp/0375702709
My friend wants to send it to me and I'm deciding if she should.

It's a wonderful novel about a young man on death row facing up to the actions he made that placed him there. I love Gaines' writing. "Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman" was another of his books. I enjoyed that one, too.

What a coinkydink!  Last week, I had to return a brand new DVD copy of "Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman" because it had no discs!  It was sealed, but the DVDs were not included.  Anyway, the replacement just arrived today and it's sitting on my desk, right in front of me.

Just had to share. :)

Actually, this isn't my personal copy...it's one of several copies bought for the library where I work.  In my job here at the library, I deal with the returns of damaged or defective material.  And there are several requests for the movie, so even if I did put in my own personal request, I wouldn't get it for several weeks and by then, we'd all have forgotten about it and I'd wonder why the heck did I request this?

;)

AITF = Sammy Davis  with the kiss   there was one where Jean Staepelton was going on nd on and on telling this boring story and Carrol O'Connor mimes  takingout a gun, loading it, and shooting himself in the head and falling over that was hysterically funny

MBarnum, a couple of months ago Jose e-mailed me and told me he was thinking about leaving - I don't want to go into the reasons, but I tried to tell him it was inconsequential in the scheme of things and to please stay.  He did, but then he left abruptly over a month ago.  To do so with nary a word is, to my mind, really bad form, and a real slap in the fact to people on this board, which is why I don't really understand when people "like" his updates and comment on them.  I've been sorely tempted to comment myself (but not in the same way, I can assure you) but I've taken the high road.  And I don't mean to go on about it but I must say it's so irksome to me on so many levels that I just need to vent occasionally.  Eventually, it won't bother me at all, but the rudeness of it, for me at least, is a little shocking and a little nauseating.

Mr Charles Condomine in our play Blithe Spirit has a nice epithet that I am going to adopt into my speech......when he becomes most irritated at one point he merely says:

"Dog's dinner!"

Tomorrow is jam packed full of appointments.  While I'm gone the workers will be doing all kinds of work.  I need to figure out a different room for the cats to be locked in, the bedroom now has a cracked window.  It didn't before, but they are going to fix it.  The jury is no longer out on their quality.  I made a comment about the way the windows looked this morning and man, are they looking better now. I told them the re-glazing was the main reason I hired them and they took more time and Ron even commented that it's more of an art.  I was so happy to hear that.

The new neighbor hired them to do a bunch of stuff when they are done here, so I think that really made their day.  My neighborhood is like that.  If you see someone working on a house, that's enough of a recommendation to go hire them to do yours next

I am really excited to see the new roof on the gazebo (Ron is starting it tomorrow), it's going to be fabulous. And they are taking down part of my chain link fence.  I don't have a dog and won't likely have a dog, so I don't really need it.  AND it is SOOO ugly where it is now.   I'll be able to do much better landscaping right by the garage and be able to highlight my gazebo.  It's a bit scary spending the money I'm spending on these projects, but they are all really more maintenance than anything new.  Once they are all done, all I have to do is paint the bathroom and hallways and voila!  I will have everything done and can just start regular upkeep and maintenance.
Sweet
