Title: THE EARLY NOTES CATCHES THE BIRD OR THE WORM OR THE TOSTADA
Post by: bk on July 18, 2010, 10:24:45 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes caught the bird, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they caught the worm and the tostada and are complacent.

Good morning, all! This morning iis the checkup for the tooth extraction I missed last Monday because I thought my appointment was an hour later than it was. So, I wil learn today whether or not things are healing well. After that, I hope to see Joshie and give him for proofed Victor Herbert pieces for corrections, Then I head back home to finish up the edits on the two different finales for THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER so I can give notes to the copyists.

I think that's my day.

TOD: Madame Bovary.

Good Morning, between coughing and the early morning storms I didn't get much sleep last night.  I'll be surprised if the workers come here today, We have a flash flood warning and we're supposed to have rain and possible severe storms throughout the morning

TOD: Too broad a topic, as I enjoy reading a host of writers regardless of national origin. A few titles that spring easily to mind: Anything by Tolstoy, especially "Anna Karenina," as well as Dostoevsky, including "The Idiot" and "Crime and Punishment" (yes, I have Russian blood). From France, Balzac's "Pere Goriot," anything by Marcel Pagnol, and "Les Miz." Pablo Neruda, Gunter Grass and Umberto Eco are a few others. From the world of non-fiction, there's Suetonious' "Twelve Caesars," a history book with plenty of National Enquirer thrown in for good measure.

I haven't read either or these. But usually when someone posts a book here i go to amazon.com to check on it. Some of the comments on THE AMERICAN GIRL are rather interesting.

I also like to see the ratings. If a book has mostly 5s it's usually a good one.

No, that was the whole point. My brother-in-law did not put in the night light at all.

It is common for her to cry for 5-15 minutes when she gets put in her crib. And this was his first time putting her to bed.

Has there ever been this much advance talk about replacements in a Broadway show, at leats in this century, as there has been about the NIGHT MUSIC replacement cast.

Bernadette peters just because she's apparently so great, and the Stritch thing has turned into a sporting event - if all turns out well, it'll be like the Matthew Broderick STARRY MESSENGER thing of course, all forgotten.

re: the MILLENIUM movies being remade in the US.

I know movies are rarely as good as the books. But I still have hope. I would like the movies to made in the US.  I want to see what they will do.

I just think that the books are so popular.  And I don't think the foreign films will be seen by that many people here.

I would be very interested in seeing how BP and Stritch handle the roles.  Not that I don't think they couldn't do it--it's just that they are both so distanced away from the type of actresses who normally do this show.  Hoping for a good ootlegbay of this one.

Which is both sad and ridiculous.  These books have been worldwide best sellers way before the United States discovered them and from the sounds of BK's reviews, the Swedish films are probably already the definitive versions.  It strikes me as the height of Hollywood vanity that a property is worthless until a major American studio cranks out its own star-laden can of beans.

BK,

We also watched BACKFIRE this past weekend, and I said to Sandy, "He's the killer," the minute that actor walked onto the screen.  No story clues.  It was all in the casting.

BACKFIRE is an okay movie that certainly holds your attention.  It has a flashback structure not unlike THE KILLERS (1946), in which you also had two major protagonists.

Incidentally, the details surrounding the murder of the gambler (Richard Rober) are very similar to the "Bugsy" Siegel killing, who was also shot through his living room window while he was relaxing.  Siegel was killed in 1947 and the movie was made a year later, though not released until 1950.

Question: Any idea why the movie is titled BACKFIRE?

BK,

Aside from THE PHENIX CITY STORY and CORNERED, another good movie in that new Film Noir set from WHV is DIAL 1119, which was directed by my former client, Gerald Mayer (Louis B.'s nephew).

It's a hostage drama that doesn't play by the "rules," and keeps you wondering how it's going to play out right up until the end.

DR Dan the Man.  I can understand why a studio would want to make an English version film of the books.  And I can understand why people would want an English version.

I'd be curious to see the differences especially re: violence.

Wow! Did we have rain or did we have rain.  I got to the office bout 7:30 just in time to see the day become night again.  It poured and poured.  I'm resigned to the fact that it's going to be like this until Wednesday or Thursday.  I don't expect my handymen to finish before the weekend.  I'm going to see if they can at least get the boards in the deck and the floor of the gazebo replaced.  They already have the old ones taken out and the new ones waiting to be cut.  Of course they are all wet now, but they are here.  Maybe I'll take them in the garage tonight so they can dry out

NEVER TOO LATE is so funny....and I love the movie.....with Mr Paul Ford, although I am less in love with the performance of Miss Maureen O'Sullivan.....Connie Stevens and Jim Hutton.....

And though there is NO star power there - I think Jane Wyatt who plays Grace would have been a dynamite Edith!

Bunker?

Funny thing about the movie version of NEVER TOO LATE...produced by Norman Lear, directed by Bud Yorkin (though neither had anything to do with the B'way play), the family dynamics seem to be the template for ALL IN THE FAMILY, and yet I've never heard or read of it being referred to as any kind of source of inspiration for the TV show.

I visited CostCo yesterday.  I was mindful, as I always am, that I needed to stick to buying only one or two items -- things that prompted my visit in the first place.

And then it happened.

I walked in...and was immediately assembled/assailed/assaulted by a prominent row of iPod products and something that had been festering in my mind immediately came to a head:  I needed an iPod for my gym workouts (treadmill time, especially).   I have had, for years, an iPod Shuffle....but I don't like having my music shuffled.  It's one thing if you've downloaded a series of pop albums...a shuffle can seem like a radio mix.

But classical and Broadway and movie scores don't work well shuffled for me.  I need to get into each work and hear it through.

So...I bit the bullet.  And then another bullet lodged in my teeth and I bought some ear bud-type product that screamed out how wonderful it was.

Sigh.

I spent nine hours yesterday donwloading/charging and syncing music onto the iPod...only to find myself deleting it all and having to start over again.  Don't know how or why this happened.  Obviously I clicked on something.  The second time through I was able to edit some albums I was only interested in hearing a few things from.

Of primary note, however, is that I got into a Burt Bacharach frame of mind and downloaded a 3-CD collection (The Look of Love Collection, I think it's called) AND CD-2 of "Promises, Promises", the Kritzerland release.

Bruce, it's wonderful.  I couldn't believe how good it sounds.  Amazing...and it's now one of my "can't-get-it-out-of-my-head" scores.

We are back, at least in body if not in mind.  :)

So much paperwork to catch up on now.  Oy.

Bernie Slade rented from my Uncle Charlie.  Charlie invested in several of his plays, I'm not sure about ROMANTIC COMEDY, I do know Charlie invested heavily in SAME TIME NEXT YEAR, thinking it would close quickly and he'd have a nice tax write-off (his SOP with shows written by or starring friends that he was happy to throw dough into without really wanting a taxable return on his investment).  He was quite miffed when it turned into the biggest hit of that season, LOL.  ;)

The dentist says I am healing nicely. Then I went to Toyland and dropped off some music and things, followed by a trip to City Center to see Joshie and hand him some proofed copies of Herbert material.

I misread the TOD and thought it was books in translation:
UK: I CAUDIUS, HERCULES MY SHIPMATE and KING JESUS by Robert Graves
PRIDE & PREJUDICE and PERSUASION by Jane Austen
          OLIVER TWIST by Charles Dickens
          TOM JONES by Henry Fielding
          OF HUMAN BONDAGE by Maugham
A ROOM WITH A VIEW by Forster
WIND IN THE WILLOWS by Kenneth Grahame

GREEK:  THE ILIAD translated as THE ANGER OF ACHILLES by Robert Graves
           THE ODYSSEY translated by Fagles

I've read the unabridged LES MISERABLES and thought it went on longer than the musical, but I also liked Balzac's COUSIN BETTE and Proust's SWANN'S WAY; I don't have the patience to read the entire work.

Only if he can get the bag to match.

I just read and the 3rd movie (the GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET'S NEST) will be coming out here in french on dvd august 17th!

Interestingly the titles here have just been: MILLENIUM and MILLENIUM 2 (for the dvds).

The 3rd one is called on amazon.ca: MILLENIUM 3 Reine Dans Le Pal.

Jennifer-

Does The Canadian Blu-Ray's Play On US Blu Ray Units?

It should. Canadian and US DVDs are Region 2.

Yup, different one.  The one I saw is by Grossman, don't remember the first name & I must get ready for PT.

Richard and I both just received text messages from Rob that said, "Got baby!"  As part of his paramedic training, he has to be present for 2 births.  He's been scheduling hospital times and being sent home because there were no deliveries imminent during those shifts.  He had an 8-hour shift today at a different hospital and that must have done the trick!

Speaking of books, I am reading THEATER GEEK, the most wonderful book about Stage Door Manor, the staff, and soem of the kids attending the camp.

Little known fact - Mickey Rapkin, the author of the book, is the son of Leonard Rapkin who is the son of my Aunt Minnie and Uncle Rube - for those who've read my new book, you know I lived in Aunt Minnie's building in Flatbush back in 1969.  So, I suppose Mickey is my cousin.

I'm not sure. I'm definitely not going to read it right now, since my library doesn't have it. And I have 3 books now and am on a list for about 6 others.

There was something one reviewer wrote which sort of turned me off (saying how it was confusing).

I had to wonder what this was, so I Googled.

Heck!  It's Hula Hoop!!!

I was doing those moves like every other kid in America back in the 60s!!  You won't have any trouble doing it, I don't think.  Of course, the ladies in the videos make it look like a rhythmic sport, so there's some finessing to it...but it's fun and it's challenging.   When you get bored with one hoop, you move on to two, and then three, etc.

re: the hoopnotica.

I have not tried it yet. But from what i've seen it is not really like a hula hoop. It is weighted inside the hoop. So you can swing it on your hips or move it in the air above your head.  It looks exactly like a hula hoop. But it is very rhythmical.

I am gonna try it outside tomorrow (if I get it tomorrow).  From what i saw you put your right foot out and you move your body forward and backward not round and round like you would with a regular hoop.

One reason i wanted it is because it is supposed to be very good for your waist. I think if my waist was an inch or two smaller i could fit into all my smaller clothes.

My mom just got it from the library.

I remember you saying you liked Janet Evanovich books.  I saw on the VIEW today Sherri announced that she will be playing the part of Lulu in the movie (the one where Katherine Heigl will be playing stephanie plum). Apparently sherri (shepherd co-host of the VIEW) is a big fan of the books and wanted to play that part (of a hooker?) since she first read book 1.

I'll take photos.  The bikers (as in bicyclists) are often in teams, dressed up like...oh bees, elvis, cows, you name it.  I really should do it one of these years, at least for a day or two.  It's 7 days of riding through the country, partying (or not) town after town having all sorts of events, tons of great food and for at least 99 % of the people, just a crazy, up-beat wonderful feeling (I'm sure the alcohol helps)  No deadlines, the only rules are when services (emergency, vans to pick you up if you cant' ride any more etc) end for a stretch of the road. So, time doesn't really exist.  Most people camp out in tent cities or in people's yards.   There are supposed to be around 20,000 on the ride.  I think about 10,000 are officially registered.

While browsing the book store today two other books were suggested though they didn't interest me as much as Every Man.  Has anyone read THE MAGICIANS or THE AMERICAN GIRL?

I haven't read either or these. But usually when someone posts a book here i go to amazon.com to check on it. Some of the comments on THE AMERICAN GIRL are rather interesting.

I also like to see the ratings. If a book has mostly 5s it's usually a good one.

I also found the range of comments interesting for both books.  I didn't the number ratings.  Are you going to read American Girl now?

I'm not sure. I'm definitely not going to read it right now, since my library doesn't have it. And I have 3 books now and am on a list for about 6 others.

There was something one reviewer wrote which sort of turned me off (saying how it was confusing).

A few of the reviews also discouraged me away.  The woman who owns the wonderful book shop in town loved it.

Do you usually like the books that she recommends?

The store leaves index cards on books various people recommend.  I asked myself the same question and I can't answer it.  The guy that helped me in the store wrote the review for The Magicians and I have mixed opinions on his suggestions.

Oh it's called RAGBRAI  Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa.   It started with some reporters from the Des Moines Register and has turned into a really cool thing. Cities compete to be the over night cities. Since there aren't very many cities on the Missouri, we get to host th beginning every few years. You dip your wheel in the Missouri to get started and then dip your wheel in the Mississippi at the end.

It's Monday.

Sigh.

I'm taking Friday off.

Me too!! Want to come over and help me clean?

That event this weekend (which I forgot the name) sounds like a great setting for a movie.

Love....Laughter.....Heartache... and booze!  All in just seven days.

Quick!  We need a screenwriter and a cast of good-looking talent.  Don't worry, I will take care of auditioning all of the guys.

re: the hoopnotica.

I noticed it seemed more more rhythmical than a traditional HH.  However most of the moves shown are the same including moving the body with one foot out, etc.

DR Jane have you read Stephanie Plum book 16 yet?

My mom just got it from the library.

I remember you saying you liked Janet Evanovich books.  I saw on the VIEW today Sherri announced that she will be playing the part of Lulu in the movie (the one where Katherine Heigl will be playing stephanie plum). Apparently sherri (shepherd co-host of the VIEW) is a big fan of the books and wanted to play that part (of a hooker?) since she first read book 1.

I recently read Fifteen.  While I still enjoy them they are getting somewhat redundant so I'm not rushing to read sixteen.

I didn't know a movie was in production-funny since I was thinking about it yesterday and wondered what happened.  Last I heard Reese Witherspoon was maybe doing it, and that was a few years back.

I think Jason O'Mara is a good choice for Morelli.  What does your mother think of the cast?

I read it in 1964, either before or right after I finished Katherine Anne Porter's SHIP OF FOOLS. Mary McCarty and Lillian Hellman hated each other and I'm siding with Lillian. Miss McCarty is a homophobic old coot, who in THE GROUP certainly dislikes gay men and lesbians, which I find surprising given her world of actors and private ladies colleges.

I can usually get a good idea about a book from reading the amazon.com reviews. If you read enough reviews you can usually tell what kind of book it is.  If you're not sure about these two books you can always request them from your library and start them. And if you hate them you can stop reading.

I didn't used to be a fan either.  But in the books I enjoy, the vampire part is only a small part of the stories.  The people might have abilities that we don't have. But most of the stories are still really relatable.  For example, Richelle Mead (who I mentioned) writes a series called Vampire Academy. And the books have been heartbreaking and unbelievable.  But I think her audience is younger.

That's like 70 miles a day.  That is a lot. I can't believe people could do that and not prepare for it.  How many hours a day do they ride?

I bike every day. But I still think I'd have trouble doing this. I'd think you'd have to be in very good shape.

Unless ... are they riding really slowly?

LOL, TCB.  I would choose the day with the fewest hills and fewest miles!  Lots of people ride for one day just for the experience.  I do have some friends who did that and said it was sheer torture.  I have other friends who live to ride bikes.

I'm in no shape to try it now.  Who knows, maybe after Saturday night I'll be getting in shape to join the team next year... or not.  I am glad that my team isn't going to arrive until 4:00 PM so I can go down and enjoy some of the festivities on Friday and during the afternoon on Saturday. There are supposed to be celebrities for the screenings of the movie A MILION SPOKES.  I'm guessing maybe Lance Armstrong will come back. He's done at least 3 rides.  The food is what's totally incredible from the pie to pork chop man.

This will be the 4th time I've been in an overnight town when they were here, but the first time I've hosted. I really am very excited about it.  Or can you tell that by my posts ;)

Ginny I don't have The Group.  Are you enjoying the book?

I read it in 1964, either before or right after I finished Katherine Anne Porter's SHIP OF FOOLS. Mary McCarty and Lillian Hellman hated each other and I'm siding with Lillian. Miss McCarty is a homophobic old coot, who in THE GROUP certainly dislikes gay men and lesbians, which I find surprising given her world of actors and private ladies colleges.

Is this the same Mary McCarty who was in Follies and Chicago?  Not that it matters, but I'm just curious.

No, but her brother is Kevin McCarthy.

Spoo! I guess I spelled her name wrong!

But I still love you, Larry. :-*

DR Jane, I wonder if Stephanie Plum is more geared toward the female reader?

This is the one book my brother read because I thought he would like her character, and he did.  I think he read a few.  I can't imagine him continuing because nothing really changes.

 The Story of RAGBRAI
Here's one more on the history of the ride.  It's a pretty cool thing.  I've always wanted to do it, I even bought a couple wrist bands once, but I've never really trained and although many do it without much trainging, I don't think i could.  I wouldn't mind driving a van some year and maybe riding one day

I would only ride on the last day.  That way they would think I was slow because I had already been riding for six days.

;D

I like THE CLOSER tonight.

We finally watched the previous episode last night.  The station changed and I didn't check if the new season was set to record.  Luckily it was on again.

Thanks to DRs Ron Pulliam, JRand, and Jane for comments about THE GROUP DVD.  DR Elmore has come to the rescue!

Oh, and DR Jane, I just started the book, so haven't come to any conclusions yet.

I read more than once it was compared to Peyton Place which I'm not a fan of.

I've only read one of Patterson's books.

The only book I've read of his is Sunday at Tiffanys.

But my mom has read the Alex Cross books and the Women's Murder Club. And she loves them.

I read The Beach House.

DR Cillaliz, last night I watched a motion picture on DVD which had been filmed on location in De Moines, Iowa.

The film was titled THE HOSTAGE (1967) and it starred Don Kelly (aka Don O'Kelly), Harry Dean Stanton, John Carradine, and Ron Hagerthy. It was a very interesting film, and for a budget dvd the picture quality was both fantastic and anamorphic.

The movie reminded me a lot of an early 1970s made for televison film. Has anyone else ever seen this film? I only picked it up because I had interviewed Ron Hagerthy a few years back.

Don't think I've ever seen that.  One of my favorite Films from Iowa (Other than Field of Dreams)  Is Cold Turkey.  Dick Van Dyke is in it.  It was filmed mostly in Winterset, birthplace of John Wayne, and it ends with a Randy Newman song.  "He Gives Us All His Love"

Ditto!

I actually looked at my calendar today when I got a Facebook announcement for local auditions for THE CHILDREN'S HOUR.  It's scheduled to open the day after Richard and I get back from Florida, so I don't think I'll pursue it.

A couple of days ago, I received "The Two Ronnies: Series Seven (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Two-Ronnies-7-DVD/dp/B003FSSKDS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1279606659&sr=8-3)" from Amazon.co.uk.  I'd gotten it because The Manhattan Transfer were the musical guests for all eight episodes!  These episodes were originally broadcast between December 26, 1978 and February 10, 1979.  The original soprano, Laurel Massé, was still part of the group, but she wouldn't be for much longer.  She got into a car crash and chose to leave the group.  So, having these songs is pretty cool! :D

...and even though it's a region-2 PAL DVD set, I have a region-code-free DVD player AND it's not copy-guarded, so I was able to record the songs onto my US DVD burner so that I can make my own eight-song mini-DVD. ;D
