TOD: The first movie I remember buying on VHS was "The Pirate" with that overlooked beauty of a score by Cole Porter and great performances from Gene Kelly, Judy Garland and more. Still love the over-the-top quality of the movie. And I think my first DVD purchase was either the original "Hairspray" or "The Ref," my favorite Christmas movie.

My 1st VCR was a Sony Beta HiFi, which I purchased in '84.  It still works and I use it every once in a while to transfer a Beta tape to DVD.  The 1st videotape I purchased was "Casino Royale" with Woody Allen and a cast of thousands.  Probably the best thing about it was Herb Alpert & TJB doing the title song and Dusty Springfield's "The Look Of Love."

Good morning, all! I slept late until 8:15, so I guess I was tired. I have to say that I'm quite bummed over this $768 Ohio tax bill; I knew it was coming, but, between the dental clinic, estimated taxes, and health insurance, this is one more expense I don't need at the moment and I am beginning to resent everything about this Ohio property enormously, from the stupidity and greed of my brothers in not selling it when they could for less than they wanted to the fact that I cannot sell off my part of it. Has anyone read the fantastic novel GEEK LOVE? I feel like the Siamese twin in the novel knowing she will die because the other twin has poisoned herself, and I hate being tied up in my siblings' imbroglios.

So, enough bitching about it.

Today, I will finish the LADY OF THE SLIPPER Finale problems, wait for corrections on the Herbert pieces from Joshie and Scott, and proof them. I also have to do laundry, so that will be the first task.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday, DR Miss Karen !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As for the TOD, I cannot for the life of me remember either the first vicdeo or DVD I purchased. I can still recall my first CD, Dvorak's glorious  Dlavonic Dances, which I am currently listening to. I hope it's disturbing the oaf above me, who spent too much time clomping about last night after 1 am.

I am quite sick of him, his barking dog, and the damned landlord for doing nothing. There's a side of me thinking the landlord is encouraging him to force me to move so they can lease the apartment for over twice what I'm paying.

TOD:

My first videocassette recorder was a Panasonic that lasted me for over ten years.  I bought it in January 1984, for the immediate purpose of taping the RSC NICHOLAS NICKLEBY miniseries on PBS.

I'm pretty sure that the first store bought video I purchased was Disney's PINOCCHIO.

My first DVDs were christmas gifts from my sisters, even though I did not yet have a DVD player.  They were the SOUTH PARK movie, THE MATRIX, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE and CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON.

TOD:

I got one of the early Sony Beta machines, which had a separate clock.

[Beta was always a much better system than VHS, but their mistake was not coming out with a 3+ hour recording tape soon enough.  That's why they lost the war.]

The first tapes I bought were from that group that Fox licensed:

PATTON
THE FRENCH CONNECTION
HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY

and one other title that I don't recall.

I recall taping a lot of movies off of the Pay TV channels, and also the commercial stations.  I'd sit there while they were showing the picture and edit out the commercials.

In fact, I was writing my movie books back then and I had a friend at Channel 11 (They owned a lot of classics that they ran uncut late at night.)  So, as a favor to me, she scheduled many titles that I wanted to record to play after midnight.  I'd go to bed early, set my alarm, then get up when the movie came on and edit out the commercials.

Those were the days...

Hmmmm.....my first VCR was purchased with the money that I was played when I won a playwriting contest.  It was a Sylvania top-loading one that had a remote with a LONG wire attached.

My first video was THE PERILS OF PAULINE with Betty Hutton because it was on sale.

I next purchased ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN - it was in the used section at a video store with a price tag of $39.95, I thought long and hard, but finally walked up to the counter with it - and discovered it was on sale for $20.

I don't see how people who don't ride a lot/or who aren't in shape could just do this race.  I ride everyday. And it still sounds really hard to me.  I don't know if i could ride for 10 hours a day (or however long they race).

Thank you, DR ELMORE.

I used to do as DR DRUXY described.  In the early days of cable....CBN was NOT what it is today, and they would show a lot of old Republic and UA movies from the 50's late at night.  I would sit up to record some of them....and using that WIRED remote edit out the commercials.

I believe the first VCR I bought was with the first bigger stereo tv I bought, shortly after I bought my first house in 1986 (that's a lot of buying).  I was very excited to have this "high tech" new device.  I can't really remember what the first tape I bought was, but I well remember joining Columbia House and just getting scads of stuff I had wanted to see for years.  I also splurged (this was long before you could get rare items online--in fact, there really wasn't an online then) and paid $90 for Come and Get It, which a local video store agreed to sell me since it wasn't getting rented very much.  Such are the vagaries of true fandom.  :)

I also remember how thrilled I was to find SOUTH OF PAGO PAGO on VHS at the reasonable price of $29.95 at a local video store.  I ran down to buy it after work on a Friday and promptly went home and watched it, falling asleep about half way through.  :)  I later watched it with my late friend Evelyn Hamilton, the producer of PILLARS OF PORTLAND, and she was very funny at the battle scene in the climax, asking, "Why when they're in danger, do they always climb UP?"  (Jon Hall and others were climbing the masts of a ship, and of course several natives fell to their demise).

TOD:  My first VCR was the RCA Selectavision.  It was very dear in price (around $1,000), but it was truly the most versatile VCR I ever owned.  The slow motion was a DREAM...and there were three separate speeds.

As with all Selectavision products (CED, anyone???), RCA was not supporting my model when it needed repair.  So...into the junk pile it went.

I truly cannot remember what my first commercial VHS tape purchase was.  These tapes were pretty expensive back then...at least for the titles I coveted most.

As I hinted at above, I also bought into the RCA Selectavision Capacitance Electronic Disc system (CED).  It was being touted as far less expensive, more user-friendly and more reliable than the LaserDisc system which was having serious software problems at the time.

I bought many, many CED titles...yes, indeedy.  And it didn't hurt matters that I was living in the Indianapolis area at the time and the CED factory was in those environs.  Several stores had access to all avaialble titles.  My first commercial copies of "Star Wars" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark"...both under $20 each (the VHS tapes were somewhere between $60 and $100 each) were on CED.  Many titles were issued on CED that had not yet made it to VHS, including "Laura" (IIRC, it was the CED issue that led to legal problems for Fox about some music sources on-screen...heard on the radio or in a night club).  These had to be replaced, and every version of "Laura" you see today has the theme from "Laura" playing on the radio or at the nightclubs.  Several years elapsed before the title made its way onto VHS and Laser.

But, all fun ends.  RCA not only gave up on CED, but it also withdrew its support for the machines it had sold.

I believe that the first VHS movie I bought was BRIDE OF THE GORILLA starring Barbara Payton and Raymond Burr.

We had just gotten a shipment of budget VHS in at Bi-Mart, where I was working at the time, around the mid 1980s. Prior to that all the VHS I had ever seen was way too expensive.

TOD: We had a Beta. The first video we rented was Pinocchio for my toddler son.

Buying that Beta machine was a huge investment for us, as we were quite poor when we were young parents.

I remember later taking the machine to my friend's house because "Cinderella" was going to be shown. She recorded that for us. The next morning, she put in a tape and hit "record" on the Disney Channel before she left for work. My kids watched that tape for years.

That's what I thought DR ELMORE....we had a lot of fun last year.....he is really quite good....and much taller than I am which gave a nice contrast in our comedy scenes.

And there's LOTS of that in NEVER TOO LATE.....I love physical comedy.....after all my teacher was Lucy Ricardo!

Welcome new D(ear) R(eader) windsongRobbie!  I hope you enjoy HHW!

Yes Edith finds lumber at Cooper's and buys it there instead of Harry's lumber yard....and he follows that up with:
"What am I saying....I would have given it to you for nothing...."

And of course Edith reveals that she is expecting and asks Harry about a poem and all Harry can come up with is:
"I shot an arrow into the air......"

My hoopnotica came in the  mail this morning!

The thing feels much heavier than I expected (even though it's only 1.5 lbs). But it is much bigger than a regular hoop. And much heavier.

I've been talking to a few people who hoop.  Because it's so heavy it can hurt a bit when you start. I'm glad I asked, because I was wondering. I tried it and it hurt a bit. Glad that will go away!

I guess I will just try it a bit at a time till I get used to it.

I just received a fascinating piece of Farmer memorabilia that may bring back memories to JR:  it's yet another of her typed scripts for her show (I have several), with tons of her handwritten interpolations.  This was for her January 22 show one year and the film that day was THE LONE GUN.  What is interesting is how much interstitial stuff she did--page after page of commentary that led to commercial breaks (including one by Rosemary DeCamp, LOL).  But, JR, she also had a special WFBM guest that day:  Curly Meyers, whom she identifies as Channel Six's resident cowboy, and they evidently sang folk songs together--the lyrics are all printed in the script with the keys!!

elmore and Jane - that's all fine - I just don't know how I feel about it, frankly.  I would be lying if I didn't say that.  At this point, if he comes back he comes back - but I'm not expecting it and I wish I could say I would rejoice, but after all this time, I have no idea if I'll be rejoicing because I felt the disappearing act was abrupt and rude.  I don't see any other way to say it - want to take a break?  Tell people.  So they don't worry.  This is not some site he visited occasionally.

I have to agree with DR Jane; we've seen DRs come and go - Ann and Matthew are two I can think of right off the bat - and nothing is said, but you've been bitchslapping Jose for several weeks as though it's a personal affront. You told us last week he'd emailed you that he might be E&T so you were told ahead of his departure.

I was happy to talk to him today because we've not been especially close in the past five months and I wanted to be sure I wasn't the reason he'd gone away. He seemed fine and I was happy to know things are okay, outside of the apartment tsuris.

The first VCR I had, I rented.  It was an RCA BetaMax, and I even had to rent the movies from, of all places, Photo Hut!
The first VCR I bought, after about six months of the BetaMax, was a big-assed, top-loading RCA, which must've weighed twenty-five pounds.
When I bought that VCR, the first films I bought were WHAT'S UP DOC? (used at $20, which at that time was cheap) and THE SOUND OF MUSIC (two tape, strangely packaged).
The first movie I taped was an HBO showing of COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER, and I only recently got rid of that tape in a major de-cluttering.

The first dvd I bought was Warner's LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, with the alternate ending on the flip side.  I didn't buy a dvd player  however until a few weeks, or months, later.

DR Cillaliz, re: that bike race/ride

I don't see how people who don't ride a lot/or who aren't in shape could just do this race.  I ride everyday. And it still sounds really hard to me.  I don't know if i could ride for 10 hours a day (or however long they race).

First of all, it isn't a race.  No one is in a hurry.  People often stop in the little towns along the way for hours at a time, or they may stop at a farm selling pie or watermelon or something. The first day is 70 miles, there are hills, but it's mostly fairly flat paved roads through the countryside.   And, for those who are registered for the ride, there is a wagon that will take you and your bike to the next stop.  Most groups have their own busses and vans who they meet in each small town, so if they don't want to go on, they catch a ride.
There are also a lot of people who ride just a day or two to be a part of it.

When I got home from the grantwriters' successful social media training session, Richard and Rob were preparing a summer supper of BLT sandwiches and corn on the cob.  Rob left for a 4-hour shift in the ER and Richard and I took a drive out to the country to deliver a Canton surprise to DR Elmore's sister-in-law (not Lady McB).  Jo was pleased.

Did Maddie and Max behave?

Ride at your own pace then. :)

Most definitely.  Some leave before sunrise, some leave around noon or whenever they recover from the night before.  Beer before noon is a very common occurrence.

Quote
7. Iowa: Biking RAGBRAI
To the uninitiated, spending a week riding your bike across Iowa may hardly seem like an adventure. But RAGBRAI, the Des Moines Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, is a big deal in every way that counts for road cyclists—and it doesn’t get any more red, white, and blue than this.

Each year on the third Sunday in July, 10,000 riders start on the state’s western border (the route changes yearly) and proceed en masse, rolling east in seven stages in a traveling juggernaut that celebrates everything that’s good about the heartland. It’s a long queue of spinning spokes and endorphin-charged folks wheeling over farm-to-market roads that normally see maybe a tractor and a couple of cars a day. They ride into dot-on-the-map towns that welcome everyone with Fourth of July fanfare—bands oompah-ing, flags waving, and every school, church group, and Kiwanis Club in support.

Throughout the week RAGBRAI riders supplement PowerBars and Gatorade with three-inch-thick pork chops, corn every which way, and the race’s true lifeblood: homemade pies. There are as many as eight refueling stops each day, and cyclists put them to good use. Forget velodrome-flat rides: Some RAGBRAI weeks total more than 25,000 feet of climbing. (We did say this was an adventure.) Riders might camp in sorghum fields and shower in swine barns, but Hawkeye hospitality is guaranteed.

We don't grow sorgham in Iowa, but it's the thought that counts

That is true.  I rarely drink actually.  I'm not crazy about beer or wine. I do like fruity drinks a lot like pina coladas or strawberry margaritas. But I rarely have them. Even in university we used to go to bars every week.  But I always had to drive so I never really drank.

That seems funny since biking is exercise. So they get fit and then eat and drink a lot.

The best pie I've ever had was in Indy one time when I was visiting a friend who was working there. He took me to this fancy restaurant that had the best key lime pie ever. It was so good. I wish I could have that pie again!

At dinner the most interesting thing happened.

This guy at the next table asked if I could help him with something.

He said that he and his table (about 4 others) were having an argument. He was trying to do a trick and they would not believe him that it would work.

He had a napking with "1 2 3 4" on it. And he made me stare into his eyes for 30 seconds. And then he asked me to choose a number.

I chose "3" and then he turned over the back and it said "trois" (3).

Gosh I wish so much that I would have said the second number to come into my head. Or that i could try the trick again. Not sure how he did it. I guess when you stare into a cute guy's eyes you always pick number 3. :)

I had ribs. Love them. And since we only ate at 8:30pm I didn't eat half of mine. And my mom gave me the rest of hers. So did my aunt. So i ended up with way more than i started with. Except that my sister looked at my plate and asked why I got all the ribs. So i gave her half of what my aunt gave me.

I think it's because my mom and aunt know that ribs are one of my most favorite foods in the whole world.

Well, it's not really about getting fit either.  I think it's really about getting away from everyday life and just being free for a week.  When nothing matters except getting from point a to b, meeting people, eating food, drinking or not, camping out or staying in the home of a stranger who opens their door to you, and being with 10,000 people who are putting their lives on hold to go for a week long bike ride.  Everyone is going outside to play, just like they did as kids.

I'm not big on pain or needing things like "butt paste" (That's the name of it) for chafing, so I just play a part for a day and then waive good bye.  I always want to go....but then I get on my bike and ride around the block and realize it's probably not a good idea for me

Skip E. Lowe is hilarious and if you say the right things you can just get him so flummoxed and I love a flummoxed Skip E. Ths is why I cannot figure out why you're taking the whole thing with Jose much more personally than Ann's or Jed's or Miss Karen's or others' down time from HHW. I didn't try to contact Jose until today because I had several suspicions that he had things of a personal nature he was working through, like maybe the monkey photos and his thoughts about them, a possible relationship, possible family concerns, a new group of friends, work problems or too much work. I was happy he returned my call because I knew others had had no response.

I have a question for BK and anyone else who would care to chime in:

Why do you think the Tonys eliminated the Best Score category in 1968 and 1969?  Were they trying to avoid giving "Hair" a prize?  It seems odd when you consider the glut of potential nominees both those years, including "Promises, Promises" of course.

Time to try to get some sleep. Coughing has kept me up all night for two nights.  It stinks.  Something is going around.  A client's mother is in the hospital with the same crud and I heard someone else was out sick today.  Hopefully I'll get over this before the weekend. I think I hear thunder...better sign off

I just got off the phone with DR Jose, who says he's had horrible apartment problems for the past month, that he is fine, and that he will be rejoining us shortly. He sends Miss Karen birthday greetings and his regards to one and all. I am very happy to know that all is well.

I will see DR Jose in September when auditions for SETC are held here. Looking forward to showing him more of Atlanta!

I went to an Asian market yesterday and saw hula hoops that come in 4 pieces and then you assemble it into a hoop. It had nubby knobs in the inside of the hoop, which was supposed to be beneficial for "childrens' bowels".

Ewwwww.

We have something similar: BRAG (Bike Ride Across Georgia)

Back from a long play reading.  I wanted to get something to eat and every single DAMN restaurant was closed at ten.  This city is so pathetic it's not even funny.
