Title: THE THING WITH THE PERIODS

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had the thing and the periods, and now it is time for you to post until the period cows come home - they're currently in 1886.

Good morning, all! I have another McGlinnventory day, followed by God knows what. Last night I had a peculiar dream involving a holiday maybe Thanksgiving, an apartment full of dogs of all breeds and ages, amd the only other person I remember in the dream was a girl I had a crush on in junior high and high school . I also remember a door that needed painting at one end of a hall and another door at the other end that was fine.

TOD: Vampire movies? I remember lots of cheesy ones from the 50s and 60s, but I did like these:
    THE BRIDES OF DRACULA
    VAMPIRE CIRCUS
    MARTIN
LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH (This movie creeped me out; I think it's a vampire film)

I could talk to them about Grant's tomb. Or Cary Grant.

Favorite vampire movies? I was a "Dark Shadows" fan as a kid, but the movie versions of Dracula or other vampires were never quite as successful as I thought they should have been. That said, I loved both the original "Nosferatu" and Werner Herzog's remake with Klaus Kinski and Bruno Ganz. For the sheer fun of it, I also liked "Blacula." The original "Blade" was also good.

DR FJL, Richard keeps asking me the same thing.  This particular issue has to do with a commitment I'd made to a professional organization while I was still working.  My term on their board runs through December, 2010, and it can't come soon enough, believe me!

TOD:

I've never been a big fan of vampire (or any horror) movies, but there are definitely exceptions.

SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE w/Willem Dafoe

and

HORROR OF DRACULA
w/Christopher Lee (my former client), who was the best Dracula of them all.

Surprisingly, after I discovered them, I became a fan of:

BUFFY, THE VAMPIRE SLAYER
and ANGEL

And, I also am enjoying TRUE BLOOD.

I'm a sucker for good writing.  [No pun intended.]

I, too, am a fan of the TV shows Buffy, the Vampire Slayer. Angel, and True BloodBuffy is my all-time favorite show.

In films, I've really enjoyed Near Dark and Lifeforce (go figure...it's really bad, but it has many amazing things in it, not the least of which is a dazzling score by Henry Mancini).

I'm also quite partial to the original TV version of Stephen King's Salem's Lot.

It is hotter than hell at the office and the copier is working poorly. I am neither amused nor happy at the moment.

Today's McGlinnventory went well; we unpacked and sorted around 12 cartons of books and got all of the orchestra scores on the shelves. I'm trying to copy the original libretto for SWEET ADELINE, which is unbound, but since McGlinn was a complete slob and pig, the libretto is missing the last part of the final scene of Act One sand first page of Act Two. I doubt any more of it will turn up. So, I will photocopy what I can for myself and return the remainder to Rodgers & Hammerstein, who may have another copy. We'll see.

Punctuation's classical use is to support syntax; it has a secondary use to support "sounding aloud" breath control: comma, small pause. period full stop.

Take your example:

"...the critic quote on the front reads: Best. Vampire. Movie. Ever."

Read aloud "The best vampire movie, ever." has little audible punch.  We can add punch, increasingly with'

"The best vampire movie, ever!"

"The best vampire movie. Ever!

"The best vampire movie!"  Ever!

leading us to:

"Best. Vampire. Movie. Ever." (Each word spoken as a heavily stressed one-word sentence)

Those of us who have our own personal anal-retentive pixie who reads aloud in our inner-mind while we silently read from the page appreciate the technique.

Some of my favorite prose works (Baldwin's "Giovanni's Room", Conrad's "Heart of Darkness") sound like poetry when the pixie is speaking.

der Brucer

Lesson Two is is the use of language to invoke imagery which then conveys meaning (examples, T.S. Eliot, Walt Whitman, L. Ferlinghetti ).

And you have provided no information whatsoever about WHY this has become the popular thing to do in the last YEAR.  It had to be done in a book or somewhere online or something, because ten million people didn't just suddenly get the idea to do it all on their own.  That's what I'm trying to get to the bottom of.  I understand the WHY of it but since no one ANYWHERE was doing it a year ago, why is it now being done ad nauseum.

A couple of late Ask BK questions because I just remembered them.

If I remember correctly weren't you going to release a series of STAGE concerts hat hadn't been released?

Is Whoop-Up still being considered?

With the talk of John McGlinn  if memory serves me there is an unreleased restoration cast album (or two) that he recorded but were never released. If the rights can be sorted out would you consider releasing them?

What about Babes In Toyland once Elmoore is finished with the restoration?

I do not like vampires or vampire movies.

It's funny, but I would have said the same thing a few years ago.  But I find that the vampire books/tv shows/movies they do now are much different. It's not some big scary vampire. But rather they have vampires having regular lives/love lives ...  I find I actually really like this kind of book/tv show/movie.

I've never seen most of the vampire movies listed. But I have watched Twilight and New Moon. I watch True Blood and The Vampire Diaries.

You totally lost me with Walt Whitman!

The thing with the periods is prevalent on every single message board I occasionally visit.  Everyone who is saying they've never seen them must be living away from the computer or message boards or places where writing occurs by amateurs.

I guess that's where I must be living, I haven't seen it before today on this site

Because people don't talk to each other anymore, things like random periods after words are used to exaggerate what the person is trying to say.  The newest fad, whether spoken or typed, is to pause after each word for "effect", usually sounding way over the top.  So, if you add a pause after each word which is followed by a period, and say it in an over the top sort of way, you get the effect the person is trying to convey.  Did I mention people don't talk to each other anymore?

- Is it really a big party? Yes. Imagine doing something you really love to do (in this case it’s cycling) with 10,000 people who love the same thing. Remember, you’re on vacation and the only thing on your to-do list is to get to the next town. You get to eat, drink and be merry all day. And when you get to the overnight town, they throw a party for you and your friends.

Quote
Discovery
Woodhenge was identified in 1925 after an aerial archaeology survey by Alexander Keiller and OGS Crawford. Crawford credits the discovery to an aerial photograph taken by Squadron Leader Gilbert Stuart Martin Insall, VC, in 1925.[1] Maud Cunnington excavated the site between 1926 and 1929.

I don't know when it started (or why or how it caught on), but the tag line for Harlequin Productions (http://www.harlequinproductions.org/), a local theater group, is "Real. Live. Theater."  They've used that at least since they moved into their own theater in 1998 and it's at the bottom of every page on their website.

I don't have a choice about working hard, I've got a bus full of people sleeping here on Saturday.  Yes we're notified of everything via email in federal court.  all filings are electronic, etc.  Sometimes we get phone calls too, but most of the time no. The thing with the periods is prevalent on every single message board I occasionally visit.  Everyone who is saying they've never seen them must be living away from the computer or message boards or places where writing occurs by amateurs.

I visit a few message boards. But mostly the writers seem fairly intelligent.  And I've never seen the periods after every word. BK maybe it's just a few boards that you happen to visit. Because it's obviously not going on everywhere on the internet.

DR Jane and DR Vixmom - thanks for the congrats for the car payoff.  It won't last long, as I'm looking into trading my current 2003 Honda Element, for a new 2010 Honda Element when they go on sale in the fall.

Anyway, I'm back from my bike ride and now I'm going to get cleaned up, get some grub, and head to Annie

It's been a really busy week at the office too, but I've been stressing about finances, so it's exactly what I needed

I'm glad you have the work. :)

I'm sorry to hear about the lost day off tomorrow, Cillaliz. It's awful that they don't let you in on the scheduling.

Well, it's a short court hearing and I can do it and still have most of the day off, it's just the lack of respect that gets me

And what if you'd already left for the day by 5pm and missed the email?  Seems crazy. What if you had another meeting scheduled? What if you were out of town?

The cold is getting better, it's just a summer cold.  I slept more last night than I have all week.  I'm relaxing tonight and tomorrow I'll get up, go to court, then come home and start cleaning. I probably would have been drinkng coffee then anyway....

Sometime tomorrow one of the handy men is coming to get rid of all the weeds along my back stone wall and prep the area below that will get a coat of cement next week.  I can't even express how great it feels to get these jobs done or in progress.

MR BK - I guess it's a way of shouting without using capital letters - and might have begun with texting and moved to message boards.

Well, this is an initial, so the Judge would most likely go ahead without me.  I hate that.  It isn't illegal or anything, but I would hate to be the client and have the judge tell me he doesn't know where my lawyer is and that she was sent notice.  It's very annoying.  For the more important court settings, we are usually consulted - well not always, sometimes we just get the date and if there is a problem have to work to change it.

The way they send notice is one of the reasons I have my blackberry, and that's what most of the lawyers do.  That way I can at least get notice and contact the court if necessary.

My handy man just called to tell me he's sending his son over tomorrow to finish cleaning out weeds etc to make the yard look good and if I need him to do any other chores while he's here to just tell him what to do.  I'll have to look around and see what needs to be done outside.

Woo Hoo, I got a call a little while ago from the FPD who was hired to replace me.  He's going to fill in for me at the hearing in the morning so I can have the day off.  Now I can get up early and dive in to cleaning....or go for a coffee then dive in and clean.  This is so much better.

So, tonight at almost 5:00 PM I get a notice via email of a hearing at 9:00 AM.
Unless there is a published procedure that you check Email on a particular schedule, you should be able to skip it without penalty.

I used to have have a stated work-place policy: I have Email - it is not EPhone! I usually check Email twice daily at 9 AM and 3PM, plan accordingly!

And  the sign in my office said:"Piss-Poor Planning on your part does not justify an emergency on my part!
