Well, you've read the notes, the notes were vaguely Roman and roamin', and now it is time for you to post until the Roman and roamin' cows come home.

There may be theatrical roots to yesterday's discussion of  "thing with the periods" when A CHORUS LINE called itself

The Best Musical.  Ever

(not the period between Musical and Ever)

BK,

I can't believe that you didn't like DIAL 1119.

I thought it was one of the best films in that set, a hostage drama that was totally unpredictable.

Right up until the end, you have no idea how the situation is going to turn out or, if it happens, who is going to save the day.

Nothing on the horizon (Lost or otherwise).

We did watch Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs last week and enjoyed it.

And we watched I'll Cry Tomorrow. After reading about Miss Roth on line it's not quite the entire life story but it was still a wonderful bio pic and Susan Hayward was great, although I did notice physical gestures in ICT that showed up a few years later in VOTD (Valley of the Dolls).

Chelsea Classics is showing With a Song in My Heart on August 5th. I've never seen the entire movie so I may have toddle over and see Brini Maxwell and Susan Hayward do the Jane Froman story

Good morning, all! Today feels like Saturday to me, but I am sure it's because my morning isn't crammed with things to be done so I slept late.  I do believe I will go to the NYPL today around 11, proofread some Herbert scores, and maybe even do some writing.

Last night's weird dream involved a blizzard and a snowball fight including many people I do not know, but a lot of folk from the New York State Theatre Institute were involved along with my beloved goddaughter Charlotte. She was making huge snowmen with funny hats.

My friend Jon's audition is in another hour from now, and I hope it goes well. Keep them vibes coming!

Friday morning greetings!

Ahhh, that's much better - I was not awakened at 6am by worries about the August 3 grantwriters meeting, so slept in a bit this morning.  We're getting ready for my cousin and his nephew to stay with us for a few days while they visit my aunt.  They'll arrive tomorrow evening and stay until Tuesday morning.

Hey everybody. Up kinda early, but a lot has been accomplished in a short time. I was awakened early by my body telling me to eject something that wasn't agreeing with me.  This is the second time in 2 weeks.  I'm hoping most of it is taken care of and we can go on with the day as planned.  In the meantime, it will be gatorade and bananas.  Today is another jammed packed day.  A funeral in the morning, camp in the afternoon, and then a show this eve.  Tomorrow, wedding in the morning and then 2 shows.  The weekend I'm sure will fly by and before we know it, it will be Sunday evening.

I've been using my hoopnotica for 3 days. I really had no idea it would feel so heavy. Or that it would hurt to do it. Or that I could bruise. I am reading their facebook page now. So thankfully I can read what others have gone through. Otherwise I would think I was crazy.  I was shocked that it hurt. And need to find some kind of padding for around my waist.

But people say it should stop hurting soon. I don't care so much about small bruises. But I want it to stop hurting.

Yesterday, Der Brucer said
Quote
Unless there is a published procedure that you check Email on a particular schedule, you should be able to skip it without penalty.

I used to have have a stated work-place policy: I have Email - it is not EPhone! I usually check Email twice daily at 9 AM and 3PM, plan accordingly!

der Brucer

And  the sign in my office said:"Piss-Poor Planning on your part does not justify an emergency on my part!

LOL Der Brucer, you have to realize that I'm dealing with federal judges here.  If you aren't available at the drop of a hat they can take you off the list of people who get federal criminal cases or just make your life hell.  They won't throw you in jail for something like this , but technically they do have the power of contempt.  As they say.."What's the difference between God and a Federal District Court Judge?   God doesn't think he's a Federal District Court Judge"

ARG!! I'm still feeling really cruddy, sore throat and coughing. Luckily the yard guys and handy men will be doing the work outside, but I really need to clean inside.  What I'd like to do is get some sleep.  Think I'll take it easy this morning.  I'm cutting back the plan.  I'll do all the bathrooms and finish the basement first, then move to the main floor.  I'm going to just tell everyone that upstairs is off limits. that will cut back what I need to do  and will give me a place to put a couple boxes of clutter.

Sometimes the adoption coordinator will let me know. Not usually. I check their numbers on the online "see our available pets" list. These guys I won't know about, as four of the five are listed as "brown tabby," so I don't know which number goes to which kitten.

Yeah, I like seeing some of the former contestants and how they keep getting better and better -- "growing" as they call it -- and glad they're giving them jobs -- but it does take time away from the new talent.  Mary was entertaining, even if her screaming and hot tamale antics got a little over the top at times. In comment sections on recent stories and on blogs, Mia was really getting blasted for what folks were calling her "mean-spirited" comments -- especially the week she roasted Adechike (sp). Hated to see Alex bite the dust and really hope his injury isn't a career killer -- the top two now I think are Lauren and Kent (except his facial expressions can be a bit of a turn off -- at one point they were getting on him for what they called his "jazz face" -- he really was playing to the audience that week they got on him about it). I really liked Jose early on and how he was "growing", but now his lack of training is starting to show and he's not "growing" like the others. And, yes, what is it with all the injuries this year?

I hope you feel better soon, Cillaliz. You've been waiting for this weekend so long!

I think I will.  I feel the worst in the morning after coughing in the night. I slowly feel better as the day wears on.  I have today and tomorrow to finish up cleaning.  The yard guys just finished and the handyman should be arriving soon. So, outside will be done.  That's really where they will be. I think it's the humidity that's really bothering me.

And in a bit of Serendipity, I wasn't too pleased with my yard guy, but I've had him since I moved in and he's an older guy, so I decided to just keep him.  Well, he just told me that he can no longer do yards because of his heart.  He's not sick right now, but his doc told him if he doesn't quit he could have real problems.   So, he gave me a referral and I think my new handy men may do yards.  I'm glad I didn't have to fire him...and the yard looks beautiful today.

CD: The soundtrack to the Norwegian film "DeUsynlige" (US Title: "Troubled Water"), composed by Johan Söderqvist, and played by Iver Kleive, on the Bergen Cathedral organ in Norway. The score consists of classical music, folk tunes, jazz improvisation , and Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" all played on the organ. I know nothing about this film directed by Erik Poppe.

I purchased the three "The Girl..." "Millennium" triology by Stieg Larsson yesterday.  Although I am reading the complete and unabridged  "Bruce Kimmel" at this time, I may have plenty of reading time in the next 10 weeks. My right hip, that was totally replaced in 1989, is beginning to hurt and cause me to take up using a cane. I have tentative replacement (hip revision) surgery scheduled for October 6th, so I should have plenty of reading time during the 10-12 week recovery period.

I had an e-mail late last night from a disgruntled person who's received his one CD set of Promises.  To his "horror" he realized he didn't have the pitch-corrected version and demanded I do something about it.  I wrote him back saying he DID have the pitch-corrected version so that I wasn't sure what he was going on about.  The first thing I did was open a copy of the one CD set to make sure it was the right one - it's pretty easy to tell - the running order is different, it has the hiccup, and the hidden track.  I suggested he listen to the original Ryko CD (which he says he has) and that if he cannot hear the difference I don't know how to help him.  His e-mail was so attitude-laden and rude it was unbelievable - the customer, in this case, is not right, even if he somehow had received some other version (I don't think it's possible, as I had them pull the CD 1 stamper and file it away before this was pressed) - there is no reason for rudeness and his amusing threat of "do you want me as a customer."  Uh, no.  I don't.  And, of course, this is the first title he's ever purchased so he's not much of a customer anyway.  I haven't had a response yet.

Finished the Backstage article, which is about casting then vs. casting now - it's basically what's in the introduction to the book - shorter, with a few more asides.  Hopefully it's what they were looking for.

Also heard back from the e-mailer who apologized and said he was confused because there was nothing on the packaging that said it was pitch-corrected.  He hadn't even opened and listened to the CD.  I told him the info is in the booklet and told him I hoped he'd enjoy it.

I sort of liked Kent in the auditions. But now I don't care for him. He is okay. But I think he's more personality than a great dancer. I do like Lauren a lot. And I still like Jose. Even though he is out of his league. He makes me smile.

Some are saying that the injuries are because they are choreographing the dances for the all-stars who are more experienced.

I wish Mary Murphy would come back. It's funny because i've always loved mia michaels. But i just don't care for her as a permanent judge this year at all. Same for Adam Shankman. I don't like him as a permanent judge.

Actually, you were describing MANHATTAN MELODRAMA (MGM).  Gable grows up to be a gangster and Bill Powell become the D.A. and, later, governor.

In ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES, Cagney becomes a gangster & O'Brien becomes a priest.

In THE ROARING TWENTIES, we don't meet the characters until they are grown men and in the army, fighting in WW1.  After they are discharged, Cagney becomes a bootlegger and Jeffrey Lynn joins the D.A.'s office.

Feel better.  I hope the funeral is comforting and the rest of your weekend goes well.

I've got everything prepped to announce our new release tonight - or maybe I'll just announce it now?  Given what happened three weeks ago, I'd jump on this very quickly.  So, you heard it here first and I'll repost tonight - best to do both because I'll be getting home late this evening, hence the notes will be late.  You know the drill - it's 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping (23.73) payable to paypal using our paypal address of kritzerland at adelphia dot net.  Very excited this is finally happening and I hope it makes everyone very happy.

Kritzerland is proud to present our new limited edition CD:

PROMISES, PROMISES
Original London Cast Album
Music by Burt Bacharach  Lyrics by Hal David

Yes, after our wham bang success with our two CD Promises, Promises Original Cast Album (which included the original LP mix on CD 1 and our newly-remixed version with the pitch-corrected vocals), and the one CD re-pressing of the newly-remixed version, we now present what is a Holy Grail for most cast album collectors: the Original London Cast Recording of Promises, Promises, starring Anthony Roberts, Betty Buckley, and Jack Kruschen (reprising the role he created in the film on which Promises is based – The Apartment – for which Kruschen received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor).  The London production opened in 1969 and ran a very healthy 560 performances and was loved by both audiences and critics, just as the Broadway production was.

This is the first release of the Original London Cast Album, which has been mastered from the two-track album masters, which were in pristine condition.  It’s quite a different listening experience from the Broadway cast album, and equally fun in its own different way.  There are some interesting adjustments in the orchestrations occasionally, and naturally the recording balances are completely different than the original cast recording.  The cast is superb, with Buckley really socking home her numbers, and Roberts truly charming and lovable.  And it’s great to have Kruschen in the role he created in the film of The Apartment.  We’ve put the songs back into show order, as they were heard on the Broadway and London stage.
After the joy of being able to present the original cast album’s original LP mix on CD for the first time, as well as the newly mixed version with the pitch-corrected vocals, it’s an equally great pleasure to be able to finally present the London cast album, sounding better than ever.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.   The price is $19.98 plus shipping.

CD will ship by the first week of September – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

And for those who haven’t gotten the newly-mixed, pitch-corrected version, copies have been going fast, so don’t wait too long – the critics are calling it a “revelation.”

HIP VIBES!!!

Thanks for all the good vibes from Kritzerland. In the late 80's hip replacements were estimated to last about 10 years, so I have gotten twice the mileage.  Revision surgery is just like the initial hip replacement; they take out the "old" replacement and put in a "new" one.  I've already had this done with my left hip. Just call me the bionic man.  As an aside, hip surgery is one of the most successful operations in the US. I am thankful for the technology; otherwise I would be wheelchair bound.

When I try to rest I end up coughing so it is what it is.  I'm a little disgusted with the handy men right now. The son came and did weed eating he cleaned a lot up and charged me a little more than I thought he should have, but putting that aside.  I asked him to clean up the glass that had been left after they replaced windows.  After he left I went around the outside of the house and there was glass everywhere.  On all sides of the house...I'm also not that pleased with the way they did the windows, but they are better than they were.

Anyway, I called the boss and asked him to let me know what I owe them now because I'm not going to go over budget and I'll skip the cement if I need to.  He has been trying to add to what they are doing every chance he gets, so I decided to nip that in the bud.  We'll see what he comes up with.  They still have more to do.  I'm not at all pleased that I had to do so much clean up after them.  To me if you do a job, you do the clean up.  Maybe I'm just cranky....our heat index is 103 right now and it wasn't a pleasant job to do.

Oh I'm just not feeling very good and am complaining...the gazebo looks great, the weeds he cleared out today look great. The chain link fence is gone. The deck is fixed and even though the windows don't look that great, they are all glazed (bumpy uneven glaze, but glazed) and painted - even if it isn't great, it's much better than it was. The guys are nice and mean well....but they didn't really know how to glaze windows, they don't clean up after themselves very well  and I have a feeling the bill will be well over budget if I don't slam on the brakes now.

I have been very clear about staying in budget, and I'm very serious about that. We're in a good position to stop now if we've reached it so I decided to be very direct and ask for an update.  He said he'll calculate it and call me tomorrow.

Is the handyman the one without a shirt?

I'm surprised DR MBarnum hasn't demanded more photos! Or did he do that in a PM?

Recorded a lot of oldies this week, which I hope to get watched over the weekend:
WE'RE ON THE JURY (1934)
LADIES OF THE JURY (1932; starring Edna Mae Oliver)

Mr. Barnum, if you now tell me you have the hots for Edna Mae Oliver, I may just write you off as a lost cause!

Matthew, be careful tomorrow.  I am not sure that "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile" is the best ending for a funeral.

I'm not surprised since you haven't given your body much resting time.  I admit, I rested and my summer cold lasted a good while.

I hope you told the boss exactly how unhappy you were with the clean-up.  And I would have told him, in no uncertain terms, that trying to keep adding things was going to amount to you adding a new handyman!

I did tell him about cleaning up the glass and that I wasn't pleased about it.  He tries to keep adding things by encouraging me to approve them. So I'm not really mad about that. I keep saying no and remind him of the budget.

Pretty lackluster Hollywood Show, I must say.  Well, they could have had me if it weren't for their attitude.  Perhaps it's that attitude that's spreading the word that the show isn't the fun it used to be.  These people are all about crass and money - whereas Ray Courts was a gentleman who did this out of love.

I am watching the weirdest production of Frank Wedekind's play "Sprng Awakening," titled THE AWAKENING OF SPRING that seems to be a filmed theatre production, with the setting moved from 19th Century Vienna to America in an unspecified time. All the names are Americanized and the cast includes John Aniston, constance Towers, and Jason Graae! I'm not sure how I like it.

The London Promises is absolutely superb.  I was so thrilled when I scored the LP years ago from BK's former close personal acquaintance Brian (is that right?) at A1 Record Finders on Melrose.  I found so many wonderful cast recordings there many years ago and Brian also went out of his way to score me some very rare bossa nova LP's.

Bruce, I posted about this at the A&M Board, where some curmudgeons had been complaining about you not releasing the OLC along with the OBC.   ::)

I certainly enjoyed many of the episodes of the Official Second Season of THE LUCY SHOW this week.

But Gale Gordon as Mr Theodore Mooney is so irritating.....all his does is yell and make Lucy Carmichael cry....his only reason for being in the show.  No variation in the writing or the performance....and I was tired of it by the end of that season.....but it went on through the entire run....and the next LUCY show AND the Last Lucy Series.

Whew!  The laundry is done.  The basement is ready for guests.  There is a stockpile of toilet paper in all bathrooms.  The basement bathroom is clean. The main floor bathroom is clean.  The kitchen is clean.  I will do more tomorrow, but if I didn't get anything more done, it's ready enough.   The role of a host is to provide a place to pitch tents, a bathroom and a place to take a shower.  I've already got all that covered.

Not well, but better.  I'm going to try to get lots of sleep tonight, but we're under a tornado watch until 3:00 AM we're expecting more rain and high winds.  There are already a lot of tent campers here so they are going to sound the tornado sirens if there is any severe weather to warn them to take cover.  Glad they put that on the news.  It would be very unnerving to hear tornado sirens when there was no tornado warning

And the cleaned up area I call my lower patio.  It used to be the driveway and garage when the house was built

Looks nice, Cillaliz.

So, is there enough room in the basement for everyone if there is a tornado warning tomorrow night?

Yes. It's a finished full basement.  I steam cleaned the carpert last week so if they need to sleep inside they can be safe and dry.  Tonight is supposed to be the last bad weather night until next weekend, so they should be fine camping out

It's nice to have a calm day for the girls before they have to be jailed in my bedroom tomorrow night.

MORE BAD NEWS

Bad news for OCD cd collectors like me,  Decided to listen to The Brain From Planet X this morning and to my horror that the cd booklet some how stuck together. The autographed insert is ruined and it has upset me so. This has never happened to me before.

NOOOO!!!!!!!!! :o

I am not familiar with WHAT AM I DOING HERE?

Liz Callaway sings it on LOST IN BOSTON 2.

According to "Broadway First Take, Vol. 2":

Quote
Cut from the score, perhaps because of a preponderance of ballads.  A beautiful ballad, it is sung here with moving introspection by Rose Marie Jun.  It questions why this intelligent young woman continues in a futile affair with a married man.  She asks herself, "When am I ever gonna learn."

Well, today was a weird (but in a good way) day.  When I went to lunch today (about 2:00 pm), I got back at about 2:45 and power was out!  A couple of people had heard that there might've been an accident not too far away and that's what caused the power outage.  Anyway, we were told that if the power didn't come back within an hour, we could leave.  Cool!  It turns out that the power didn't come back so we all got to leave!  And since the building head closed the building, we get to use our "emergency leave," which means that we don't have to use vacation or make up the time.  So, I came home.

What I've been doing at home is FINALLY taking the time to finish BK's book, "There's Mel, There's Woody and There's You."  I reclined in my recliner and finished it, which actually was about half the book.

Sorry that it's taken me so long to finish it, BK.

I think I need to re-read the Benjamin Kritzer books to see how it all fits together. :D

Oh...because I was at lunch when the power went out, I actually only had wait around for a half hour before they sent us home.  Maybe because it was a Friday afternoon and not a lot of people were there, but in the past, we've always had to wait two hours before they closed the building.

But I'm not complaining (a Closer Than Ever reference ;)).

In fact I have scads of demo's just lying around here, several of which I had completely forgotten I had but which I found again in the recent move.  One of my favorites is the demo for COMPANY where BK's close personal friend Stephen Sondheim decided for some unknown reason to have Another Hundred People arranged and performed by the Ray Conniff Singers (well, maybe not them exactly, but it's that kind of arrangement).

Is it as fun(ny) as the McGuire Sisters-inspired version of "Getting Married Today" that's the hidden bonus track on "The Stephen Sondheim Album"?

It was the McGuire Sisters, wasn't it?
