Good morning, all! One of my major sources of frustration has to be addressed today and that's the Oaf Above Me. I turned off the lights at 11:15 and had to listen to loud chatter filtering down from him and his current lady friend - his bed must be directly over mine - until around 1 am or so when all hell broke loose on the street outside my apartment. It was a lady having quite a noisy and hostile battle with a gentleman that went on, with additional commentary from outraged neighbors in several buildings, for around 15 minutes. So, I had to listen to that as well as the heavy trod of footsteps to the window to check out the situation.  That was at 1:22 am; I checked the clock. After the battling couple had vanished - back to the bars on Amsterdam Avenue, I assume - and everything had quieted down, the police finally arrived to stop the situation, so we had that little interlude followed by the Oaf and his friend gettng out of bed and very noisily stomp about the ceiling - looking for articles of clothing, I can only presume, before they vanished with a door slam. Around twenty minutes or so later, the oaf returned with another door slam and trod about way too long; this has to be close to 2:30am. I really loathe this sonofabitch.

So, whether I wanted to or not, I was out of bed at 7 am, and I have to finish my one chart for the Indianapolis gig so I can proceed to the next, and I wait to hear from Christopher Fitzgerald about a rehearsal time to run through the Victor Herbert songs he's recording. I need to ascertain the dates are good. Since I'm home, I look forward to hearing from DR Ginny how her cardiac cath(?) goes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ More Vibes to DR Ginny for today's test! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I wonder if your lack of sleep  is contributing to your blues
I don't think you are going to get much joy  anf cooperation from complaining anymore apparently this guy is completely inconsiderate -
 have you considered soft foam earplugs and possibly some "white noise" ? A fan running could work nicely -
perhaps that would prevent you from hearing the heavy walke when he comes in  A good nights sleep can work wonders
Don't they also sell soothing sounds on CD?
Also sound machines (normally used for people who have sleep apnea) might be helpful, unless that's expensive.
Last night I watched a Monogram movie entitled SUSPENSE with Mr Barry Sullivan, Miss Belita, and Mr Albert Dekker.  Most interesting, but not too suspenseful, except I kept wondering when it would be over.
I guess Belita was a famous ice skater and she did a couple of numbers on the ice during the course of the movie - choreographed by Nick Castle and costumed by Kalloch......whew.
Hey everybody.  Things are in the home stretch around here.  Two camp shows open this weekend (and close, too) and then the 7 weeks or so of summer camps will be done.  I'll need a vacation from my "summer vacation" I think.  One of the shows were doing is 13 and upon hearing a run through (I can't see the stage), it truly is a hot mess of a show.  The music is fun to play, but the book and the lyrics... really, don't make me vent here, cuz I could!!  It's one of those shows that I can say "been there, done that".
Other than that, I'm outa here.
I have no doubt it is.
I am a light sleeper.  And surprisingly sleeping with the tv on makes me not wake up to other noises.  I would think that sleeping with a radio on at the very least would take away from the noises the oaf makes.
Or earplugs.
But personally I would complain to the landlord again. It's not acceptable that you should be woken up every single night.
Congrats to DR CILLA LIZ on her appointment. Now you are one of the PIC - people in charge!
Ditto from me! This got lost in last night's fright about DR Ginny, whose DH Richard is on the board of the Middletown Historical Society (I think). I remember that on one of my visits to Ohio, we discussed it over one of DR Ginny's delicious dinners.
DRs, I have tried ear plugs and i loathe them I feel uncomfortable and claustrophobic and I'd just as soon not. I told the oaf that I hated them and that was my concession to keeping the peace, but since the pig has done nothing about carpeting or controlling his noise after 11 pm, I'm giving him no more concessions. I'll kill him first, and in my mood of the past week, it was more likely than usual.
I just finished the second page of the full orchestra section of 8 measures, It took me all morning, There are a lot of cusses playing, and I thought i'd never reach the finish of it. Now i have around 16 bars of voice and spare accompaniment, so I'll finish this turkey today.
Speaking of turkey, I will meet E&T DR Rodzinski for dinner at Artie's tonight.
I had a couple of Facebook responses from people saying they'd been in rehearsal or doing this or that - my point really is that it wouldn't have mattered whether they were or not - they would have been doing something other than showing up is my point - it's always the way - no matter what day, what evening, it's always something.  And I'm down with that.
A side of me thinks the landlord is hoping that I will, but I've got good rent after 30 years of living here and I'm not moving because of a 24-year-old jerk who thinks he's in a college dormitory. I'll sue the landlord first.
Please let Ginny know that the HHW Physical Rehab Support Group is at her service.
The Cardiac Cath takes a few hours - the procedure itself is not too long, but you must stay "prone and resting" until the mega-dose of blood thinners they gave you work themselves out of your system - also be mindful that if they discover blockage that can be remedied by stenting, they may well do that procedure at the same time (stenting is done by the same invasive cardiologist that does the cath, and the "system" is already in place.  If she does get a by-pass or a valve job, cheer her up with the news that the procedure is not near as bad as one imagines and recovery moves apace at a noticeable rate. I was amazed that when I did my first post-op town walk-about I actusally felt better than I had for years.
I, too, have a problem with noisy neighbors, but I don't think it's in the same league with Larry's. I was running the fan the other day to drown out the the noise, but it's not the same as QUIET!
When I was looking for an apartment in the DC area, I found that most of the buildings REQUIRE a certain percentage of the floor to be carpeted. If this is the case at Larry's, then the management is remiss for not enforcing that, as well as any other noise restrictions that are in place.
Perhaps someone can find the Oaf Above more suitable housing. Someplace he can be an inconsiderate jerk and fit right in.
I've been told that there are some MAJOR astrological happenings going on. I've noticed several problems with machines--the sort that we get with a Mercury retrograde--and have heard about others feeling stuck and out-of-sorts. I wonder is this is partly responsible for Larry's depression.
JRand, any thoughts?
Well, there are some MAJOR astronomical happenings going on - we were hit with the leading edge of a major solar storm last night.
TIME (http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,2008558,00.html?xid=rss-health)
Quote
But on Aug. 1, the sun woke up with a vengeance: there was, in the breathless words of the website SpaceWeather.com, "a C3-class solar flare, a solar tsunami, multiple filaments of magnetism lifting off the stellar surface, large-scale shaking of the solar corona, radio bursts, a coronal mass ejection and more." The event was captured in spectacular video by NASA's new Solar Dynamics Observatory, launched in February.
For the average person, it's the mass ejection that's most immediately relevant. A giant solar burp has sent a cloud of charged particles racing toward Earth. When the particles, which were predicted to arrive on Tuesday night, slam into Earth's magnetic field, the resulting electromagnetic storm is likely to trigger a spectacular show of northern lights across Russia, North America and northern Europe. It could also scramble communications between orbiting satellites and receivers on Earth, but the relatively modest size of the ejection has led experts to consider a major disruption unlikely. Still, says Golub, "we have no way of predicting this with any certainty."
...
And the solar activity is expecetd to grow until 2014
Things in Dayton are not going well and I'm very frightened for Ginny. I've heard from Richard's sister-in-law Jayne, who says that she had a heart attack durng the procedure and her right coronary artery is severely damaged so there's no chance for a bypass. I will wait to hear from Richard on her status before I consider the information completely accurate, but Jayne went through something similar with Richard's brother John not too long ago.
I just spoke to Richard, and DR Ginny will be in ICU at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, OH, for several days. I told him what Jayne had reported and he said he felt her comments were colored by John's heart condition and death. Ginny only had one heart attack and that was yesterday, not during the procedure today. The doctors inserted a stent(?) and restored a better flow of blood to an area of her heart that was blocked. The cardiologist and several specialists all agreed that a bypass was not necessary. I hope I am reporting all of this correctly, but i feel the info is not so dire as Jayne made it out to be.
Had a small sandwich.  All packages have postage.  Most importantly, the Thurber original arrived safe and sound and is so wonderful I can't even begin to describe it.  Also got a couple of other packages, and shipped the transfers of our next two projects to the mastering guy - who actually now has the next five projects to do.  I'm listening to the flat transfer of the project we're announcing on Monday - it sounds great flat, so it will only sound even greater when the mastering guy works his magic on it - the score was recorded and released in mono and this is what mono should sound like.  The 1950s LP pressings were noisy and constricted (it was a pretty long program for an LP in those days) so this sounds like it never has before.
I've pulled the tapes for another Ryko show release I was thinking about reissuing - guess what?  Same deal - they remixed it, so the original LP mix has never been on CD!  Unbelievable.  So, I'm definitely doing it and it will most definitely sound better than the Ryko remix.  The only other decision is whether I will remix it myself - this doesn't have any of the problems that Promises had, but it's swimming in muddy reverb (don't know if it was recorded to tape that way) and I know I could make it sound a LOT better - just don't know if sales would justify the work and cost involved.
I can't help but remember Ryko issuing the "Man of La Mancha" soundtrack and that it was out of sequence.  They allegedly put it right in future pressings, but they offered NO returns/replacements to those of us unfortunate enough to buy the first batch.  That really soured me on the label.
To make matters worse, they didn't use all the releasable music...there were some orchestral passages on the commercial cassette that were not on the LP.  They apparently used the LP master with only the tracks on the LP in the offing.
Other than that, I'm outa here.
A side of me thinks the landlord is hoping that I will, but I've got good rent after 30 years of living here and I'm not moving because of a 24-year-old jerk who thinks he's in a college dormitory. I'll sue the landlord first.
And on a happier note...California gay marriage ban overturned (http://www.comcast.net/articles/news-general/20090305/NEWS-US-GAYMARRIAGE/)!!
Quote
SAN FRANCISCO — A federal judge on Wednesday struck down a California ban on same-sex marriages as unconstitutional, handing a key victory to gay rights advocates in a politically charged decision almost certain to reach the U.S. Supreme Court.
U.S. District Court Chief Judge Vaughn Walker also ordered the voter-approved ban, known as Proposition 8, immediately lifted to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry while the case moves to a higher court.
Prop 8 supporters had sought to keep the measure in place pending the outcome of their appeal.
But Vaughn said the lawsuit challenging Prop 8 "demonstrated by overwhelming evidence" that it violates due process and equal-protection rights under the U.S. Constitution.
"Proposition 8 fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license," Walker wrote in the conclusion of the 136-page opinion.
I am back from dinner wth DR Rodzinski, who asked about everyone and wanted all the dish. It was great to see him and to catch up on everything.
DR Jane, I will hear from Richard when he or Ginny calls me. She'll be in ICU for several days and I'm not going to hover.
How is DR Rodzinski?
Thanks.  I wanted to know what to expect.  Is Richard doing ok?  Do you know if Rob arrived safely?
It is official, Sherlock's biopsy report said benign.  Not that we were worried, still it is nice to have it in writing.
Great news!
Thank you DR's td, Laura & Cilla.  Now we wait for this to heal so we can remove the bandage.  He had to start a second week of antibiotics.  He is handling them well enough but combined with the heat I'm sure he would be feeling better without them.
Rodzinski seems fine. I had a great time with him, and he sends regards to everyone. He asked about all the DRs.
I have no idea what you mean by "what to expect." I had no urge to talk to Richard about mortality, and I don't think he wanted to either. He's always been a quiet man and he told me what he knew and figures it's in God's hands for the time being.
I have no idea if Rob arrived. I assume he did.
And, yep, I spoke too soon--got home from work to hear Gabe say "The internet went out at 4."  Went to call Qwest and discovered:  NO DIAL TONE!!  Called them from my cell, got that extremely (EXTREMELY) annoying auto-voice feature, reported the problem, and the dial tone magically returned about 30 minutes later.  Oy and double oy.
I'm beginning to think Grant won't be coming, despite the promise of doing so.  That's bad.  He has something he was bringing me tonight, and if he calls and isn't coming, unless he brings it tomorrow that means I'll have to go to his house to get it.  He was, in fact, supposed to come over this afternoon and told me the evening worked better.  But, he's not responding to either home or cell, and that's why I'm doubting he'll be here.
And on a happier note...California gay marriage ban overturned (http://www.comcast.net/articles/news-general/20090305/NEWS-US-GAYMARRIAGE/)!!
Quote
SAN FRANCISCO — A federal judge on Wednesday struck down a California ban on same-sex marriages as unconstitutional, handing a key victory to gay rights advocates in a politically charged decision almost certain to reach the U.S. Supreme Court.
U.S. District Court Chief Judge Vaughn Walker also ordered the voter-approved ban, known as Proposition 8, immediately lifted to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry while the case moves to a higher court.
Prop 8 supporters had sought to keep the measure in place pending the outcome of their appeal.
But Vaughn said the lawsuit challenging Prop 8 "demonstrated by overwhelming evidence" that it violates due process and equal-protection rights under the U.S. Constitution.
"Proposition 8 fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license," Walker wrote in the conclusion of the 136-page opinion.
....
Well...the article has since been updated to this:
Quote
SAN FRANCISCO — A federal judge on Wednesday struck down a California ban on same-sex marriages as unconstitutional, handing a key victory to gay rights advocates in a politically charged decision almost certain to reach the U.S. Supreme Court.
Legal scholars said the decision has wide implications for nearly 40 states with similar laws on their books, making it more difficult to defend those measures in court on the basis of moral grounds or social tradition.
Still, U.S. District Court Chief Judge Vaughn Walker ordered the voter-approved ban, known as Proposition 8, to remain in place at least temporarily until he decides on a request by supporters of the ban to keep it intact while the case moves to a higher court.
Although the result leaves gay men and lesbian couples unable to marry for now, Walker said Prop 8 opponents "demonstrated by overwhelming evidence" that it violates due process and equal-protection rights under the U.S. Constitution.
That's still encouraging.
It also happened to The Julie Andrews Hour after one season it was cancelled and it won 7 Emmy Awards including Best Music Variety series and an Emmy for Julie Andrews. For many years the show held the record for most Emmy Awards won for a show in a single year.
In the strange but true department:  many years ago I bid in a "live" auction hosted on eBay by a very large and reputable firm.  I "won" the bid, got the confirmation email from both the seller and eBay and then, because it was Sunday, waited until Monday to call the company in L.A. to submit payment with a credit card.  When I called that Monday, they informed me there had been a "system error" and that the item had been sold to another bidder.  I couldn't believe it.  Well, guess what?  That item is back on eBay, being sold by the other bidder, evidently.
BTW, George and others interested in gay rights might want to check out the Benjamin Bratt film "La Mission," which I just reviewed for Blu-ray.com.  It's a bit overwrought, but it's a very involving and touching story about the Latino culture in SF and what one macho dad does when he finds out his son is gay.
Although the result leaves gay men and lesbian couples unable to marry for now, Walker said Prop 8 opponents "demonstrated by overwhelming evidence" that it violates due process and equal-protection rights under the U.S. Constitution.[/size]
That's still encouraging.
Yes, but....
The court will hear arguments for a stay on Friday, and the stay will most likely be granted.  The case will then proceed to the Ninth District Court, where it will probably succeed, but another stay will be granted pending the appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. The Supremes will most likely hear the case; had the case been decided on state law, the Supremes could just let it stand; but, because the case was decided on US Constitutional grounds, the Court will most likely hear it, else the case would stand as law in only the states in the Ninth District.
There is little likelihood that the court will experience a conservative-to-liberal judge turnover before 2012, so the case will most likely be decided in a 5-4 decision, with Justice Kennedy deciding which way it goes.
