Title: VAGUELY SCANDINAVIAN
Post by: bk on August 05, 2010, 12:00:20 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were vaguely Scandinavian and had a little deja vu, since at some point in time I titled the notes vaguely Scottish - go know - and now it is time for you to post until the vaguely Scandinavian cows come home.

One of the very few advantages of getting called into work at 2:00 in the am is that I get to make an early post...

TOD:

Sheesh, I don't know that many contemporary British playwrights (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_playwrights_since_1950). I guess Michael Frayn and Tom Stoppard have to be the winners by default, since they're the only ones who have multiple listings in my personal experience.

Favorite productions: the last Broadway productions of An Inspector Calls, Copenhagen, and Invention of Love. If we're talking non-contemporary British plays, then my favorite, hands-down, was the Pearl Theatre's magnificent Cymbeline, which I sat through about a half-dozen times.

I wouldn't know them: my Yiddish is lign in d'rerd, as they say, but there are several Yiddish theater companies that produce new works (or new adaptations of old works, such as Folksbiene's dramatization of I.B. Singer's Gimpel Tam).

Good morning, all! I did sleep well last night, and I have no complaints for the Oaf this morning. I've got about 8 bars to write to finish the first of the two Indianapolis charts, and then I can begin pondering whst to do for the other one.

I've got some Victor Herbert work as well today along with some questions to answer for one of the copyists. The McGlinnventory is on hold this week.

TOD:
Christopher Fry: THE LADY'S NOT FOR BURNING
Harold Pinter: THE HOMECOMING, THE BIRTHDAY PARTY
Joe Orton: ENTERTAINING MR SLOANE, LOOT, WHAT THE BUTLER SAW
John Arden: SJT MUSGRAVE'S DANCE, THE BUSINESS OF GOOD GOVERNMENT
  Edward Bond: THE SEA
John Whiting: THE DEVILS, PENNY FOR A SONG
I know I'm forgetting several here and omitting others like Tom Stoppard, whose ROSENCRANTZ and GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD is a play I dislike although the original production was dazzling,

Best production may be the Williamstown Theatre Festival's "What the Butler Saw," a fiendishly difficult farce to pull off, and this was a really first-rate production and the best of around seven productions of the comedy that I've seen. How do we classify things like John Mortimer's wonderful versions of several Feydeau farces? What about Irish writers like Martin McDonagh? THE LIEUTENANT OF INISHMORE was also quite a brilliant production.

bk's description of trailers (text, image, text image) sounds embarrassingly like the trailer I just cut for JEWS AND BASEBALL. But sometimes you have to make things look and sound like other trailers so people will think it looks "perfesshunul."

The pleasure bk is getting out of his Thurber artwork also reminds me (unpleasantly) that I bought an Edward Gorey numbered etching about 20 years ago, the first time I had every made such an extravagant (to me) purchase. The (late lamented) Gotham Book Mart packaged it in a Fed Ex or US Mail cardboard sleeve. I never framed it, and it stayed in that sleeve. I put it somewhere "safe", and I think at some point it may have been thrown out by someone (perhaps me!) who didn't look inside. The fact that I can't find it bugs me almost as much as losing the actual piece.

One of the greatest things about the internet is that you find out that the boneheaded mistake that you've been kicking yourself over for years is one that other people have made too...

It wasn't a Gorey, but five years ago, I was so tickled by an online comic (http://countyoursheep.keenspot.com/d/20040123.html) that I contacted the artist and bought the original artwork from him. It arrived in a manilla envelope along with a bonus set of sketches and rough drafts. I never got around to framing the thing, and it got lost in our move...

I have managed to lose two letters in my move from Ohio to New York, a very funny one about her poor typing skills from Lotte Lenya and a nice response from Benjamin Britten about a year before he died. I would kill to have both of those letters now. All my ones from Steve Sondheim are now with my collection at Miami University.

Larry, an excellent list of plays and playwrights.

Most of my favourite playwrights are British.  Stoppard and Peter Shaffer are my gods.  I love Stoppard's ARCADIA and THE REAL THING and just about anything he writes.  Same with Shaffer, my favourites being AMADEUS, ROYAL HUNT OF THE SUN, and THE GIFT OF THE GORGON.

Like BK and Larry, I'm a fan of playwrights Christopher Fry and Terence Rattigan.  Rattigan, I very happy to say, has been having a serious re-appraisal lately as one of Britain's great playwrights.

I'm currently on an angry young man/Royal Court theatre kick and reading lots of Osborne, Bond, Arden.

Larry, I was lucky to see a production a few years back of John Whiting's PENNY FOR A SONG.  I also love Pinter, Orton, McDonagh (actually Irish), Hare, Brenton, Alan Bennett.

I adore Simon Gray and Howard Barker.

Of course, Shakespeare & Shaw get high marks.  And I'm a big fan of John Webster and his two classics, DUCHESS OF MALFI & THE WHITE DEVIL.

TOD:

I really like Terence Rattigan's plays.

Back in the 1950s, I recall seeing John Carradine at Seattle's Cirque Playhouse doing the lawyer role in THE WINSLOW BOY.

And, Michael Redgrave in THE BROWNING VERSION delivers one of the most moving performances I have ever seen anywhere.

I also like J.B. Priestly's AN INSPECTOR CALLS...probably because I did the show at the University of Washington.  The show is sort of an early Twilight Zone.  (I played the father.)

I've been a big J.B. Priestley fan ever since I read "The Good Companions." I loved "Time and the Conaways" in addition "An Inspector Calls." Some of his others are good ideas that are probably better read than seen on stage, but they're still fun.

Ronald Harwood, who did the musical adaptation of "Good Companions" with Johnny Mercer and Andre Previn, is another good playwright. "The Dresser" is a solid piece of writing.

Stoppard, Frayn, Ayckbourn are a few others I have enjoyed over the years.

I thought we were only discussing British playwrights after 1930 or so! I also don't know if our TOD includes playwrights of the British Isles or homegrown boys, but I think Irish playwright Brendan Behan's THE HOSTAGE one of the most fantastic plays written since 1950 with its mix of vaudeville, comedy and tragedy. as far as Restoration and 18th Century comedy, I have yet to meet one I don't like, and I think TWELFTH NIGHT and KING LEAR two of the best commentaries from any artist on artifice, fate, and humanity.

I didn't even mention Ayckbourn, whose comedies are much like Ravel's compositions: perfectly timed clockwork.

Here is a "review" on the quality of the Blu and Ray of The Ghost Writer.  The "review" was followed by a series of screencaps that would seem to support what the "reviewer" is saying:

"The Ghost Writer doesn't seem to excel in any one visual area on Blu-ray  but it does appear consistent and equally healthy in all-around image quality. Detail, color and contrast are all adept enough to surmise that this is authentic to the theatrical presentation. There is no evidence of digital manipulation and hints of grain exist but is a shade more blotchy that I would like. There are some nice sequences on the island - beach dunes and wild grasses. The image is reasonably smooth without a lot of texture and only a few significant instances of depth. This Blu-ray appears to be an adequate transfer - dual-layered with a reasonable bitrate. It supported the film for a wonderful and very enjoyable presentation."

Now, considering I found that the Blu and Ray of The Ghost Writer was virtually flawless and one of the sharpest and best transfers of any new film I've seen on blu-ray, and the fact that his screencaps do not in any way reflect what is on the screen, simply makes you wonder if these people have a clew as to what movies look like.  It makes you question HOW they're TVs are calibrated and whether the calibration "experts" know what they're talking about.  It makes you wonder if people actually go to that site and believe what he's writing, which always couches his comments to make it seem like maybe that's what the director intended.

re:  BK's column and the portion on movie trailers:

I miss the days of Saturday Night at the Movies when we'd get the theatrical trailers for next week's "show".

One I remember vividly is the one Fox did for "White Witch Doctor" starring Miss Susan Hayward and Mr. Robert Mitchum.

There were many shots from the film over which we saw the cast listing for Hayward, for Mitchum for some supporting players and then, one shot from the film was of a native uprising (this was in Africa) and everyone was in ceremonial dress and jumping up and down, and the lettering that popped up over the screen proclaimed:

"And a colorful cast of thousands!"

I just spoke to Richard, and I told him that I probably wouldn't communicate again until I heard that Gnny was released and back to her own environment. He said that she's been conscious throughout everything and that they were removing IV's, tubes, etc. this morning when she's released she has to go to cardiac rehabilitation. Nothing sounds threatening or dire, thank God, and he and I hope that she will progress nicely. Steve sondheim had a heart attack in 1979 and he just turned 80.

Rob was indeed at the hospital most of yesterday, and Richard seemed amused by DR Jane's inquiry about him. I guess today he is back to school, work, whatever else he's doing and Richard is biding his time, I would say. He's gotten messages from lots of friends on Facebook and he sends thanks to everyone - I have no idea if any are from HHW folk - and I told him that i had mentioned to the DRs that she was in Miami Valley Hospital.

I see on Ginny's page we have comments from DRs Jose, singdaw, and Jason, so I don't know if they're lurking or getting info from one of the DRs.

I think that it's a matter of not risking being compelled to jump back in.  The cut has to be cold turkey for some...regardless of their reasons for leaving.  For some, I suspect it's a matter of how much time they spend online...and at one site.  It would be counterproductive to lurk for them.

I don't get why it would amuse anyone.   I think DR Jane's asking about Rob was quite a natural "motherly" thing...and it would mean something to DR Ginny, I'm sure.  Mothers have a different wavelength from the rest of us, I think.

People who don't participate regularly in sites like HHW, don't understand the "connection" that one might have with the people involved in the site.  Which might be the reason some DR's have left us.  We definitely care about other DR's families as most DR's have volunteered info about their families.  No one pry's or anything like that.  People just don't understand if they don't fully understand the dynamics of the site.

Personally I would go take children to the Santa Monica Pier & possibly combine it with the 3rd Street Promenade.   Can you tell I'm not a fan of Hollywood?  Of course tourist enjoy stepping in the hand & footprints of their favorite stars.  Rodeo Drive is rather small & more interesting for adults.  What about the Farmers Market?

Hoping no news is good news on the Ginny front....continued vibes and prayers~~~~~~~

I'm not sure why my question was amusing :)  I am very happy Ginny is doing so well & quickly out of ICU.
MEGA VIBES DR GINNY CONTINUES TO QUICKLY RECOVER!!!

They would have seen the prayers for Ginny on Facebook from the friends they have in common.

I don't get why it would amuse anyone.   I think DR Jane's asking about Rob was quite a natural "motherly" thing...and it would mean something to DR Ginny, I'm sure.  Mothers have a different wavelength from the rest of us, I think.

Thank you DR Ron! :D

Ok LA people...  My niece (14) and nephew (11) and the DP's mom are coming for a visit.  We are heading to Disneyland for a few days, but want to stop in LA/Hollywood for 4-5 hours.  What are the best sites to show them?  The kids have never been to CA before.  We were thinking Rodeo Drive, lunch at Pinks, etc.  Is there anything anyone can think of that should not be missed?

Personally I would go take children to the Santa Monica Pier & possibly combine it with the 3rd Street Promenade.   Can you tell I'm not a fan of Hollywood?  Of course tourist enjoy stepping in the hand & footprints of their favorite stars.  Rodeo Drive is rather small & more interesting for adults.  What about the Farmers Market?

Jane - think "tweenagers": Hollywood Walk of Fame, Chinese Theatre, Ripley's Museum, La Brea Tar Pits etc.

That's definitely where the tweenagers will be hanging out!

...when she's released she has to go to cardiac rehabilitation. .

Well, I suspect she will not have the same complaint about rehab I did: you have to wear a heart monitor connected to four points on your chest; when the deed is done, you must remove same, and petend that you didn't feel a thing as all theat chest hair is pulled out.  Na the two days between sessions is just enough time for it to regrow a bit, ripe for pluicking at the next visit.

Hello everyone,

I've been intending to drop in and say hello to you all for so long, but today, reading Cilla's note on Facebook about DR Ginny was the final push to get me moving.  I practically slumped over when I read that.

Ginny - my thoughts and prayers are with you, and many vibes are being sent your way.  I hope you have a very speedy recovery.

Thank you Larry for posting about your conversation.  It sounds like there is some good news there.

And hello to everyone else.  I hope you are all doing well, and I am going to try to spend a little time today and go back over the last few days and see what everyone's currently up to.

I've been doing well myself, but I've been quite busy with several different projects happening to rev up at the same time.

I have a show going up next week at the Fringe Festival, called The Hurricane Katrina Comedy Festival, which is actually quite moving and good, and not at all about a comedy festival.

And next month, I have a show going up at NYMF called Show Choir! - The Musical.  We have auditions for that tomorrow.

And Clear Blue Tuesday, if any of you remember that, is finally getting it's opening -- the film starts showing at the Quad Cinema here in Manhattan on September 3, and we'll have a two week run of five screenings a day.

So lots of things going on.  Busy Busy - but in a very good way.

Vibes to Ginny.

Well, we got it all shipped - this was insanity - more so than the 2 CD Promises, because that shipped okay and decent numbers but really took off after word got out.  This thing got all its orders up front and only 250 went to dealers - so we just shipped out 750 boxes PLUS the dealer orders.  But it's all done and my dining room looks like a dining room again, as does my living room.  Awaiting the arrival of Mr. Geissman, who really does not seem to have the ability to arrive on time ever.

You were asked the question because of your longtime connection with Ginny and her family.  Rob hadn't been mentioned at that point.  It was a reasonable question, but obviously one that made you grumpy.

Not to jump in the fray or anything, but when a family is as close as Ginny's obviously is, and Rob is so close geographically, I can see why it would be amusing to be asked if he was there. Not amusing in a bad way, but amusing in the "where else would he be at a time like that" sort of way.

Yes, Cilla...and yet we got info about Jayne (a sister-in-law) and Richard.  No mention of Rob.  A mother with sons asks about other mother's sons.

Obviously, the question was directed at the wrong person on the wrong day and at the wrong time.  Not that there ever seems to be a right time lately.

Thank you for this. You're exactly right. Ginny's sister-in-law had told me yesterday morning in her message that Rob was there and I had completely forgotten that by last night. When I spoke to Richard, my concern was Ginny's condition, not who was in the waiting room, and I reported what I had heard. If Rob had been in Korea or Michigan, I would have asked Richard if he were coming back to Middletown. If he hadn't made the 20-mile trip yesterday, I'd get an indignant report about it from someone.

As I said, I was sure he was there and I think it's funny that of the questions concerning Ginny's heath, Rob's presence was one of them.

Ron's last post has really pissed me off. First of all, I don't appreciate the personal comments and secondly, yes, Richard and I thought Jane's question about Rob's presence was funny. I'm sorry our authority on All Things Mother did not. Am I making fun of Nursie? I hope not. But my communicants were Jayne and Richard yesterday. I did not report that Rob was at the hospital because my concern was Ginny's health, not her list of hospital guests.

BTW, everything is really good with Edith.  She's been stressing a lot about doing the billing lately. She never wanted a billing program before and now that we have so many private clients, her system works, but is sort of cumbersome.  I asked if she wanted me to get a computerized billing program. She seemed really relieved that I asked and wants to start looking at the various demos on line for the different prgrams.  That would be well worth the investment.

This day has finally ended.  Grant came by, agreed about the only spot to hang the Thurber, which he hung.  That's all we did, and then we ate at the Studio Cafe, which I must say was not good today.  I then went to the framers and got that done, then picked up a few packages, and then came home to a little panic call from the Music Center.  Seems Mr. Menken will be with us at the session and everyone was suddenly worried if we'd scheduled enough time to do everything.  I reminded the assembled that I've done a LOT of sessions, including a bunch of these Music Center ones and that I know how to book.  But I assured everyone that we had plenty of time and if things went over then we'd just go later - we have the studio until we finish.  That put everyone at ease.  But since we're recording exactly two minutes of music, I'm not concerned at all.  This isn't a cast album - this is for a radio spot.  It will all be fine, and I look forward to seeing Alan and Michael Kosarin, his music man.

From a friend's facebook page.  This photo cracks me up

The photo is very sweet & just what I needed after returning from the funeral of my friend.  I told his wife she looked very brave. For now she is doing better then I expected.

The service was very nice & I found friends to sit with.

I missed this news about your friend, Jane. Belated condolensces and vibes to the family. It always amazes me how loved ones are able to hold it together at a time like this; I imagine many people are in a state of shock and going through the motions and it sinks in later.

I would love a blizzard but I consumed about a million points last night with the famous Holeman and Finch burger.

http://holeman-finch.com/burger.html

They only make 24 per night and our timing was just right. That plus french fries and fried peach pie and, well, I'm glad I had my cholesterol checked LAST month...it was on the low end of normal.

The famous chef, Linton Hopkins, who owns H&F and several other restaurants, lives in my neighborhood, and H&F is right down the street. We walk past it all the time but this was our first time to eat there. Pretty much everything else on the menu is things like brains, organs, things I couldn't imagine eating. Jose would probably love it.

Bruce, I told you they weren't lurking. ;)

DITTO!

DR Julie it is nice to see you.  VIBES on your upcoming showing of Clear Blue Tuesday!

What a day, weather-wise!  We had a bad storm this afternoon and even rumors of a tornado.  Some of my co-workers called home and heard they had no power.  I was so happy to discover that I had electricity when I go thome.

The temperature has gone down from the high nineties to the mid seventies!

I have problems with dealing with the heat.  I sit around in air conditioning in the summer and get active as it starts to get cooler.  I actually love the winter.   funny, I've always lost the most weight from Oct-March

MR BK the dumbass woman to whom I responded on your wall wrote a pithy comment to me which I didn't answer much.....I wanted to tell her that if she is PAYING to sing songs - three was enough....and her picture made her look like a sad drag queen....but I did not....since she has a relative who writes for the NYT and another who writes freelance for NEWSWEEK and they are both REAL journalists....the idiot.....

Obviously, the question was directed at the wrong person on the wrong day and at the wrong time.  Not that there ever seems to be a right time lately.

"Let dogs delight to bark and bite,
   For God hath made them so;
Let bears and lions growl and fight,
   For 'tis their nature too.

But children, you should never let
   Such angry passions rise;
Your little hands were never made
   To tear each other's eyes.

Let Love through all your actions run,
And all your words be mild,
Live like the Blessed Virgin's Son,
   That sweet and lovely child."

"Whatever brawls disturb the street,
   There should be peace at home;
Where sisters dwell, and brothers meet,
   Quarrels should never come.

Birds in their little nests agree;
   And 'tis a shameful sight,
When children of one family
Fall out, and chide, and fight."

Tonight I set up my college email address, figured out how to access the online blackboard for class and accessed my UBill.  The charges sure got billed to me quickly, lol.   It's so wierd to think I'm enrolled at Iowa State.  It's been 24 years since I took a college class.  I'm really looking forward to this

I missed this piece of news!  What course are you taking?

It's a graduate level architecture class through the Iowa State University College of Design called "Sioux City, A Case for Historic Preservation".   It's the beginning of a new Historic Preservation Certificate through ISU.  The class is offered through a satellite school here in Sioux City called Iowa State Design West.  I can only go to about 1/2 the classes in person, but it's also a distance learning class, so if I miss it in person, I can watch the class online.

It will help for the commission I'm on, but I'm also considering going for the certificate and looking into the possibility of making preservation some sort of retirement career.  I dont' see myself ever completely retiring, but I think it would be fun to try something completely different in the years ahead, so I'm building up for that.  If I decide this isn't it, then I learned something new so there's no downside to it

I am watching a dvd sent to me by a dear friend.  Boy, that Kristen Chenoweth can really sing!  It's a shame that the songs she sings best don't belong in the show that she's in. . .and that Tony Goldwyn, well. . .maybe they should have cut "Wanting Things" as he really doesn't sell it very well. . .and Ashworth's choreography of an iconic musical number leaves much to be desired.  However, I am quite taken with Sean Hayes. . .

Ok, enough for one day. Someone is burning something outside again and I immediately started coughing.  Maybe that's what I'm allergic to.

Hello everyone,

I've been intending to drop in and say hello to you all for so long, but today, reading Cilla's note on Facebook about DR Ginny was the final push to get me moving.  I practically slumped over when I read that.

How wonderful to see Julie posting again.  And congratulations on all of your projects.  I am really looking forward to seeing the film.

Hi TCB!!  How are you doing?

Thanks so much.   If you do get a chance to see the film, let me know when you're going.  Maybe I'll be able to stop by and say hi.

From a friend's facebook page.  This photo cracks me up

The cat's head is nearly bigger than the baby's.  Funny and cute.

Condolences, Jane, on the loss of your friend.

Neat! Our film opens at The Quad on Nov 5th. I hope your film comes to Atlanta!

That's great, Amy!! I will definitely go see it when it opens.  How long is the scheduled run?

Very nice photos, Laura.
You have a really excellent camera.  It takes such clear shots.

I just finished watching THE GHOST WRITER.

A little slow for my taste, but it is excellent.

Its steady pace was one of the things I admired most about it.

I'm listening to the soundtrack to The Ghost Writer.  I watched half a motion picture on Blu and Ray but then got distracted with other stuff, so I'll finish it on Saturday.

I am very glad tomorrow is Friday.  My last day of antibiotics.  I'm mostly better, but have had to use the inhaler at night a couple tines lately.  I thought I was going to have to use it a few minutes ago with whatever was being burned outside.  I closed the windows and turned the air conditioning colder so it would filter the air.  It's better in here now, cold, but I love that.

I wonder if that's common. I would have thought that people would be outdoors more and do more exercise in the summer.

Not in this climate (heat indexes over 100degress F).

My target heart rate for my cardiac exercising is 95-105.

Yesterday a short half block stroll to the car had my heart rate at 125!

Well, tomorrow I get to meet the other half of our new-found soon-to-be neighbors.

I am a member of SAGLA – an organization of gay Service Academy alumni (and have a profile posted on their web page).

I recently received an Email from a fellow Naval Academy graduate. He, his 16 year old Daughter, and his openly gay Episcopal priest partner have purchased a house locally that they will use for summers and weekends until The Rt Rev can retire from his parish in New Rochelle, New York.

The couple have published one very successful cook book

and have another ready for release:

I am planning on introducing the young lady to the joys of Outlet Malls!

Dear Matthew;

If you're only going to be in LA 4-5 hours (with the traffic) you might only see 2 or 3 spots.  Pink's yes (the best hot dogs ever), Amoeba Music is close by (great for teenagers), the Farmers Market at 3rd & Fairfax has the Grove on the same location so it's good for all ages (nostalgia for old LA and the Grove for new LA).

I lived on Hollywood Blvd for 4 years (2004-2008) it's changed too much to even be called Hollywood Blvd., but still good for people watching.

There are sooooooooo many places, do you have a year.

Fast.

Tired.

Just watched the fireworks from the Ventura County Fair from my bathroom window.  It's so cloudy only the clouds lit up.  But still fun.

Night all. ;D

Every night at this time, rehearsal from the Rubicon lets out.  I should see what they are rehearsing, lots of singing in the street, very happy people.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.  I think we have a plan.  Now to map it out.  Thank goodness we have a week!
