TOD: Audacious to me was John Waters' "Female Trouble." Whereas "Pink Flamingos" was merely designed to shock, this movie was a pointed satire of many topics, not the least of which was performance art before the public really knew what that was.

I remember seeing the Alfred Hitchcock guided tour of the Bates Motel at a drive-in when I was a wee lad. I had to be, what, five? That left an impression on me.
I remember waiting for the CBS television premiere of PSYCHO, only to have to wait even longer, as they kept putting it off.
Our local CBS affiliate showed PSYCHO at 11:30pm.
I stayed up alone to watch it.
It promptly became one of my favorite movies, enough so that any time it was playing at a rep house I would drag (usually unsuspecting) friends to see it on the big screen with me.
In the mid-1990s, I was living with a friend who had never seen PSYCHO, or any other Hitchcock film. He tried to watch the videotape with me, but, long before the shower scene he was a nervous wreck. The build-up to the appearance of The Bates Motel, and especially the large-head close-ups of the highway patrolman, the rain and the theft was keeping him on the edge of his seat.
His reaction to the shower scene was priceless; I'm sure it was akin to how original audiences reacted. He was stunned and upset. He refused to believe that Janet Leigh's character had been so mercilessly been taken out of the picture.
Watching PSYCHO with him was one of the best PSYCHO experiences I have ever had.
BUT, nothing compares to seeing PSYCHO on a big screen, with a full audience.

We are off to Disneyland today. Pray that the kids enjoy it. I can put up with a homesick meltdown after a long car ride or flight, but I doubt I'll be able to in Disneyland. How can an 11 year old kid cry because he's homesick in the middle of Disneyland??? Uncle Matt will lose it for sure.
I must say, though. After making sure they realized that this trip was courtesy of Nana, and Uncle Eric and Uncle Matt, things got better last night as we all did some retail therapy. Kids were laughing and joking and being themselves. So, I'm hoping....

Good morning, all! I slept very late, around 10am, debating for the 15 minutes before that if I wanted to stay in bed the rest of the day, the rest of my life, or get up. I'm not sure if this lethargy/apathy means I'm coming down with something, still in depression, or simply regenerating after the big round of work last week.
I assumed it was the last, got out of bed, bathed, and dressed. I'm having some breakfast and, after that. I need to go to the NYPL, and check some info on Historic Newspapersa Online, and record what I learn. When I get back, there should be an Office Depot order via UPS waiting for me.

A very interesting list, of which I find over half not audacious in the way I consider a ground-breaking work to be - I'm thinking especially of Lord of the Rings trilogy, which, while I thought were okay, did nothing new, really, save for some good CGI characters.
Also, I don't find anything audacious about LA Confidential, although I do like the film.

The fellow who did the earlier CD issue of Billy Barnes' L.A. has spoken up on that castrecl list, saying he was "surprised" to hear of our issue, and that HIS issue is readily available (yeah). You know, somehow I don't think Mr. Barnes had it in mind that Mr. Cunard had an in perpetuity license, and since Mr. Barnes complained to me that he'd never received a penny from Mr. Cunard (and frankly he didn't even remember that a CD had BEEN released - only an LP reissue), he was most anxious for me to do it. Mr. Cunard then goes on to say that he doubts we cleaned up the sound at all since he has the album master (WHY he has tapes belonging to Mr. Barnes is another story - his CD came out in 1996). The bottom line, of course, is that I state clearly that we did clean up the sound as much as possible given the limitations of the original recording - I don't know how much clearer I could make it. And I had Mr. Cunard's CD from which to master - all he did was do a straight digital transfer of Billy's tape - therefore there would have been no difference between Billy's tape and Mr. Cunard's CD - we, of course, did as much EQ work as we could within the limitations stated. I could have had Billy get the tape back, but when I thought about it I thought, why bother?
Mr. Cunard's AEI label has not done a CD in years - he is effectively out of the business - he also said that his issue was also a limited edition of 1000 - really? I must have missed that on the packaging. And then there's the packaging - AEI's issue's packaging is, to put it kindly, amateur.

I don't know much about films that changed cinema as such (The Lovely Wife[tm] is the cinema historian in the family), but movies that completely blew me away with their thematic or technical audacity include Life is Beautiful and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (the first time I wept with absolute joy after seeing a film)

Perhaps we need a clearer definition of what you mean by "audacious"?
I tend to agree with you on LOTR, but this trilogy (and the other pictures listed) did have a profound effect on how subsequent movies were made and/or marketed.
I would also agree with other posters that both NASHVILLE and BONNIE AND CLYDE were "ground-breaking," as was PSYCHO. Also EASY RIDER.
And, then there's PULP FICTION, which played with "3-act structure".
Audacious or not, L.A. CONFIDENTIAL is still one of the great ones.

May I submit my theory that "Tom Jones" was an audacious triumph, especially for 1963.
It was funny, bawdy, shocking and tore down the doors for more "permissiveness" in mainstream film making.

Also, "Midnight Cowboy" rather blew the roof off "permissiveness" in a most audacious way, given the subject matter and its resultant awards, including Oscar.

For me, audacious means that a film did something that no other film had done to that time and did it in a ground-breaking way that changed cinema or became oft-imitated by others. Bonnie and Clyde is an excellent example as is 2001: A Space Odyssey.
I also didn't mention in my notes, but I don't think anyone has seen the original Psycho since its first release because I believe the film had some brief edits made either for the 1965 or, more likely, 1969 reissue (the first time the film was rated by the MPAA). There is a German site that has screencaps of these edited shots and I remember all of them (including more stabbing swipes in the Balsam murder - I remember counting them in the movie theater, and there is only one in the film now - which is NOT the way it was). What this means is that I don't think any home video transfer, including this blu-ray, has been off the camera negative. And I think the reason for that is that Universal would have to re-submit the film to the MPAA to attain a rating based on the original cut's extra footage - none of that would raise an eyebrow, but they'd have to do it, nonetheless, and I simply think they think people don't know, which is probably true.

I am very tired and my schedule just keeps getting busier. I just found out I may have to do a deposition in Kansas City on Sept 3. Not really wanting to do that, especially since it's juvenile court and they don't pay travel time, but it's my expert, so not much I can do.

Back from Dayton, where 2 nurses named Debbie examined my wrist and agreed that it shows no signs of infection or anything else of concern. I think the problem arose from my sitting at my desk to use my laptop - the edge of the desk hits my wrist exactly where the bump is located. It's much more comfortable to type on my lap, so that's what I'll do for a while. We had a nice lunch at Panera, Richard dropped me off at home and has taken his car for an oil change. We're going out to dinner this evening with my mother.

My sister and her grilfriend, Leslie, went downtown to see Psycho at the Roxy (now Pantages) Theater. After the movie was over, they called my mom and asked her to drive down and pick them up. They were too scared to ride the bus.
I rode along with my mom, and I remember that I had never seen either girl as pale as they were that night.

We just heard two major explosions in the Seattle / Tacoma area. We are being told that they were sonic booms from two F-15 that were scrambled after another airplane entered the no-fly zone that is in place over Seattle during Obama's visit.
When I was a kid, we used to get sonic booms around here all the time, because the Air Force Base near here. But it has been years since I have heard one, let alone two. Clean clothes are in order.

Just shows how far ahead of his time Mr. Bruce Kimmel is.
Also if the score was "lost" according to Lipton then how did BK get the music when he recorded the title tune on Unsung Musicals? Which also happens to be one of my favorite tracks. Jonathan Freeman and Christine Baranski are tops.

I saw Psycho on tv when I was a kid. It was on TV and don't remember if it was being shown on a Canadian channel or American. It must have been around 5 or 6. I never got passed the shower scene. I ran from the room screaming and had nightmares. I don't think the baby sister knew what the film was about.

I think we all know about James Lipton's "knowledge". Another bit of knowledge he doesn't mention - I was going to record the show - we were set to have it orchestrated when Sher found the parts and convinced Rosenthal he should do it - my guess is that Rosenthal wishes it hadn't gone that way. It's a pretty mediocre album and yes, the recording we did of the title song is, for now, definitive.

I was at Lithia Park visiting with DR JMM & his DW Betsy while the boys played in the creek. When I arrived JMK was wading in the water cooling off. I had to leave Sherlock home since he isn't permitted in the park & it was very hot out. Keith had to stay home as he is drinking that disgusting drink in preparation for a procedure tomorrow.

TOD: "Brazil" and some of the other movies of Terry Gilliam have an audacious visual quality that makes me return for repeated viewings. I know it was a financial flop, but I love "The Adventures of Baron Munchhausen."

Had to quit the magazine today. The publisher was behaving in too unprofessional a manner; there was no equipment to use to facilitate the job; and he didn't pay anything. It was a trifecta of good reasons to let it go.

Imagine having to listen to racist and sexist jokes from somebody who claims you got laid off because you made too much money at your previous job. Then he took offense when I no longer wanted to waste time going over the same material at meeting after meeting. And that's just the beginning. And at a freelance rate that worked out to less than $1.50 an hour.

My mother took us to Olive Garden for dinner tonight. She'd been feeling bad that she couldn't do anything to help, but this was just right. She kept marveling at how good I look - not sure what she was expecting. And I learned that, yes, you CAN eat relatively healthy at OG - I had shrimp primavera: light tomato sauce with peppers and mushrooms (I requested no onions) and just a sprinkle of cheese. Only ate half and brought the rest home for tomorrow's lunch. I even gave my chocolate mint to Mom and came home and had one of the low-fat chocolate candies that DR Jane sent.

Having praised Terry Gilliam earlier, I have to announce that I just had to remove "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus" from the DVD player. Beautiful to look at, too convoluted to pay attention to. Will try to watch the rest tomorrow.

We just heard two major explosions in the Seattle / Tacoma area. We are being told that they were sonic booms from two F-15 that were scrambled after another airplane entered the no-fly zone that is in place over Seattle during Obama's visit.
When I was a kid, we used to get sonic booms around here all the time, because the Air Force Base near here. But it has been years since I have heard one, let alone two. Clean clothes are in order.
Oh man, we had sonic booms all the time when I was a kid. I think they were from the jets flying over from SAC in Omaha

I thought I may have broken my arm tonight. I was finishing cutting up the branches from the storm last week to put out for trash collection and essentially had a tree (well a really big limb) fall on my forearm. I could move my fingers but it really hurt. I immediately iced it and after a couple hours it's feeling almost as good as new. I'm sure I'll have a bruise, but luckily I don't think I really hurt it badly

A little Weatherbug tells me that it is 77 degrees here now. That's the coolest it's been for months. The usual low in the morning for August is in the high 80s or in the 90s.

Whew! By the end of the day today I have two new clients and discovered the expert isn't available on the day everyone wanted to go, so, I get to reschedule for the next week. That will give me time to breathe and actually prepare for the depositions. I'm feeling much better. It's been a really busy couple days, but they have been productive.

No, DR Jane, I just don't like onions. And I have too much dental work - crowns, etc. - to try to bite into the candies. Besides, letting them dissolve prolongs the flavorful experience!

Whoever owns the lot across the street never clears their weeds. It's the top of a ravine and I'm sure they don't think of coming over here to clear it up. Anyway, It's really overgrown and has a lot of damage from the storm. I drug the huge limb over there and left it. After all my branches are taken with the garbage tomorrow, I'll call the weed patrol and report the lot. I hadn't done it sooner because I thought it may be providing shelter for some wild life, but there's a lot of damage and it should be cleared out. So, I'll report it. I consider my limb the price for making me look at the mess all summer. If the city has to clear it and all my branches are gone, maybe they won't figure out it came from me ;D

Yes, it was. Thanks for the reminder. Though Altman made other pictures in the style, few worked quite as well.
I haven't seen Nashville in a very long time. If memory serves Altman wanted it to be a 2 part film. Something along the ways of calling Nashville Blue and Nashville Red. I believe the footage was shot and Altman for years before he finally passed away he was looking for financing to put the extended version together.

I can also recommend a documentary about Gilliam and his abortive attempt to film a version of Don Quixote. Johnny Depp was in it. (Not Quixote) It original was supposed to be a "making of..." documentary but became something else.

I'm watching "America's Got Talent." Tonight's the wildcard show...twelve acts that were voted out before are brought back for a second chance. They're all pretty good, but for some of them you have to wonder if they really could sustain an audience for an entire evening.
