Title: I MUST DANCE!

Well, you've read the notes, the notes danced, and now it is time for you to post until the dancing cows come home - they're currently dancing the ballet of The Red Moos.

Good morning, all! Last night the slamming door and heavy tread of the Oaf Above me were spectacularly loud, coming right through those damned ear plugs, but I must have been quite tired because I soon settled down and fell back to sleep. I have no idea what time it was, only that it was after midnight, snce I put the book down at 11:15.

This morning I have a round of God knows what at the NYU Dental Clinic, and, depending on when I leave there, I may head over to the NYPL to continue reading about Miss Elsie Janis and the 1913-1914 tour of Victor Herbert's LADY OF THE SLIPPER. If not, I'll head back here to continue my attempt to write a preface to the second volume of BABES IN TOYLAND, although I am getting quite discouraged about much of the work and research I've been doing.

DR MichaelS, I have not seen all of the 1929 SHOW BOAT footage that was shot, but a good friend of mine says one sequence ends with the camera pulling back from the stage into the auditorium and showing Ziegfeld sitting in the audience.

Hey, DR Elmore, how is the musical theater book? Worth a look?

Evry book has something to offer, but almost all of them fall down on matters concerning the turn-of-the-century (19th-20th) materials because it's too distant and they know too little. From OKLAHOMA! on, the musical is very well documented on disc, film, paper, etc., but there is litle to no documentation beyond newspaper clippings and memoirs for such early forms like the minstrel show, the medicine show, or the extravaganza. Creators of "The Golden Age" were old enough to have seen an actual minstrel show, Lillian Russell and other legendary stars like Mabel Barrison and Fred Stone (Oscar Hammerstein I produced "Naughty Marietta" and Dillingham, who produced the 1905 "The Red Mill" produced into the late 20s), but no one today has. Stephen Sondheim showed with "Please Hello" that he can parody Gilbert and Sullivan a bit, but Gershwin, Weill, Porter, Rodgers & Hart all wanted to write a G&S show. Some did it well: OF THEE I SING, KNICKERBOCKER HOLIDAY, DEAREST ENEMY and they're some of my favorites.

There was a period where classic operetta revivals could successfully have a decent run but today the smartass kids on the internet would kill their chances. They can be merciless with some of the Encores! productions for being "old-fashioned" or "bad construction," and the goal there has always been to present material that may not succeed in a legit revival or to examine the works of an earlier period for what it was. Audiences probably have always had the smartass audience percentage - I was certainly one once - but their closed minds, superior attitudes and bitchery can certainly kill a lot of fun in being an audience member.

I find it all fascinating, but few of the researchers writing about "musical theatre" want to even deal with such old-fashioned materials like operetta and revue, even though those forms - somewhat mutated - exist today as part of the American musical theatre.

The sucky thing about these three hour plus GREAT PERFORMANCES broadcasts (of which SOUTH PACIFIC will be a part of tonight) is that while I'll have no problem recording the entire broadcast, my DVD recorder cannot burn anything longer than a two hours to a disc.  I can still copy an entire show to disc, but I have no control over where the split will occur.  There's always the hope that a GREAT PERFORMANCES broadcast will be sold commercially, but I have the feeling that the R&H organization won't allow this one to go immediately on the market.

I really need to get off my butt and start looking for a Blu-Ray player and recorder so I can save these longer broadcasts to one disc.

I of course love THE RED SHOES and there is a contemporary dance movie called THE COMPANY that is most interesting and entertaining with some fine dancing in it.  It is from director Robert Altman and stars Neve Campbell & James Franco.

Another very busy day.  I really slept hard last night and had the strangest dream.  My parents told me I wasn't really born on my birthday or in my hometown, but was born in a town in Nebraska about a year earlier while my mother was driving somewhere with another woman.  I was trying to figure it all out in my dream and then I woke up.  Really weird.

Good morning, all!

Apropros of not much: Reading the notes about Stravinsky, I'm reminded of when I first listened to "Rite of Spring" (Le sacre du printemps for all you French snobs out there) in an undergraduate music elective, and was absolutely blown away. Back then, I had just started to explore Sondheim's works, so hearing an earlier composer using "dissonances" melodically was an absolute thrill.

Somewhere in my LP collection is a recording of "Rite of Spring" performed as a two-piano piece from Stravinsky's early scoring (i.e. what the Ballet Russe rehearsed to before they got the full orchestra in). I really have to dig that up again...

No, it was Technicolor...that print was awful.  My DVD of "The Quiet Man" is quite lovely...and the promise of what could be done on Blu-ray could result in a truly spectactular presentation.

From wikipedia:

One of the conditions that Republic Pictures placed on John Ford was that the film came in at under two hours total running time. The finished picture was two hours and fifteen minutes. When screening the film for Republic Studio executives, Ford stopped the film at approximately two hours in: on the verge of the climactic fight between Wayne and McLaglen. Republic executives relented and allowed the film to run its full length. It was one of the few films that Republic filmed in Technicolor; most of the studio's other color films were made in a more economical process known as Trucolor.

When I was in Ireland back in 1999, I visited the village of Cong where the movie was filmed.  Indeed, the entire economy of that town is now based on the fact that THE QUIET MAN was shot there.  There's "THE QUIET MAN pub," THE QUIET MAN laundry," etc.

I have some photographs of the village in my upcoming book.

I really like this quote from Milton Berle:

"I'd rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are; because a could-be is a maybe who is reaching for a star.

I'd rather be a has-been than a might-have-been, by far; for a might have-been has never been, but a has was once an are."

I have returned from the NYU Dental clinic battered but alive. They now go on a two-week break so I see Dr Yschouk on September 8 for the next round.

I rode the crosstown bus at 23rd from First to Tenth Avenue and transferred to the 10th Avenue uptown bus so we passed Lincoln Center. The tv and sound trucks are lined up along 65th Street for tonight's broadcast. Very exciting. I suppose the audience for today's matinee will have to deal with the cameramen running through their moves.

According to the "Live From Lincoln Center" site, it will be shown at 8 pm, not 8:30 on Channel 13.
http://www.pbs.org/livefromlincolncenter/airdates.html

I keep getting "[an error occurred while processing this directive]" for my local PBS station when I lookup the show time.

Grrrrrrrr...

Does your tv have a schedule? The local paper? Weekly tv guide?

One of my PBS stations has it from 8-11pm and the other from 9-midnight. But i think many are reshowing it this weekend.

Im just going to tell Tivo to start recording at 8:00.  If it doesn't start at 8:00, I'll just reset to 8:30.

Rehearsal was fun and Alet is a wonder.  Shelly isn't nearly familiar enough with the arrangements we did - so he'll work tonight on his own so he's more prepared tomorrow.  Alet will be back, then Jason, Damon, and hopefully Lesli.  Pam doesn't work until the day before the show.

After Keith's colonoscopy today we had a short walk around town and ate lunch out.  Thanks to the storm last night the morning was pleasant.  While Keith had the procedure I did an errand and then took Sherlock for a nice walk around the outside of the park.  Because we were stopped so often while people admired Sherlock Keith was actually ready a few minutes before I reached my car to drive the few minutes to pick him up.   During lunch people stopped every few minutes to pet Sherlock & chat with us about him.  Almost everyone passing exclaimed about his size or beauty.

Keith only had two small polyps this time. :)

I will be getting partial plates from the dental clinic, and today I had another tooth extracted to facilitate the procedure. When my mother was about my age, she had nearly every tooth in her head pulled for plates. While i'd rather keep what i have, 20 years of no dental insurance and congenitally missing teeth because of my Appalachian white trash background have made the plates a necessary evil and I hope i come to love them.

While the pain is not so excruciating as the last extraction in July, it is still painful, and I'm just uncomfortable enough to be unhappy about it. I just took two Tylenol with codeine and a Tylenol PM. As soon as I know the VCR is taping SOUTH PACIFIC, I am turning off the lights and passing out. I have to be up tomorrow morning at 6:30 for the McGlinnventory, and I want to get plenty of rest tonight.

This is the first time he was even tired after.  Once we sat down for lunch he was fine & said he could go to the gym.  Of course he wasn't permitted exercise or to drive.  I like to go home for a nap.

Sherlock was cute and took us into one of the stores we frequent.  Keith treated himself to a new summer hat.

I of course love THE RED SHOES and there is a contemporary dance movie called THE COMPANY that is most interesting and entertaining with some fine dancing in it.  It is from director Robert Altman and stars Neve Campbell & James Franco.

Really fine movie. I liked Roger Ebert's comment that it actually seems to want to be a silent movie. There's little dialogue and little of what's there adds anything to the story of watching the dancers rehearse and perform.

In one of our music theory classes we spent the whole quarter on the Rite of Spring. We had to do a piano reduction, conduct it, other stuff I can't remember. It was fun to delve so deeply into one piece. The professor was obsessed with it.

The Stravinsky two piano version of Le Sacre is performed quite regularly.  I've done it a few times and it's a bear.  In fact I think I posted here some time ago about a very interesting ballet DVD I reviewed which had the dancers performing first to the 4 hander and then to the orchestrated version.

Though BK is right that the Columbia releases conducted by Igor are wonderful and wonderful sounding, it's my considered opinion that the master was sometimes not the best conductor of his own material.  Much like Copland, I might add.  ;)

The audio on South Pacific is horrible.  And the director is spending most of his time trying to make sure we don't see the mics on the actors - note to director:  Shoot the show - it's not brain surgery.  And he completely blew the magical orchestra reveal by cutting to the conductor BEFORE it happened - Directing 101 would be a good place for this director to start - I haven't seen who it is but one has a suspicion, oh, yes, one has a suspicion.
