Well, you've read the notes, the notes were big and decisive, and now it is time for you to post until the big and decisive cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: GORMANDIZE!
-
Happy Birthday, DR TCB! Today is the day you're allowed to gormandize your birthday cake!
-
Three in the morning and I've yet to fall asleep. That is what happens when you make a big decision - I've got so much stuff going on in my head and I make notes and then try to sleep and get more ideas - not just the one book, but both - it's exhilarating, yes, but during the day, not in the middle of the night.
-
And I have to be up in three hours to announce. Maybe I'll just stay up all night, but that will not be so good to do.
-
Welcome twelve GUESTS. Are you all having trouble sleeping?
-
Slow.
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
Have a very happy birthday TCB. And many many more
-
OMGosh, yes,
Happy Birthday to the Young Man himself.
TCB!
-
Happy, happy, TCB!

TOD: I love any number of mystery series, at least while the author's imagination remains fertile. It seems that nowadays the pressure to meet deadlines is so great that the imagination has lost out while the word processing has taken over.
I used to read James Hall's mysteries and Jonathan Kellerman's Alex Delaware books, but no more. I really enjoy Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch books and the John Lescroart series with Dismas Hardy. More recently, I loved all three of Stieg Larssen's "Millennium" series and I'm enjoying the movies almost as much (it's fun to see how much of the 600-page novels have streamlined for the movies and just how much those cuts have worked).
Dylan Schaffer started a series called Misdemeanor Man about the lead singer of a Barry Manilow tribute band. The humor was there, so was the fast pacing that kept you turning pages.
Another favorite is from up the road in Austin, Jeff Abbott, who also writes stories that keep you on the edge of your seat.
I could go on and on, and these are just the men writers. I also read Janet Evanovich (though her game is more humor and less mystery these days), Elizabeth George, Ngaio Marsh, Josephine Tey and more.
I started when I was a kid with two of the best: Agatha Christie and Erle Stanley Gardner.
-
that's it for me this morning. off on a job search and off to one of my last days at the census bureau. Nine to go.
-
And the word of the day is: GORMANDIZE!
And The Song Of The Day Is: TOO FAT POLKA
-
HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY TCB

HUGE HUGS AND BIRTHDAY CHEERs TO BELOVED TCB!!!

Mazel Tov on the publication of your book, DR Druxy!

TOD:
I'm not sure whether or not the works of the following authors count as a series or not:
Agatha Christie
Ngaio Marsh
Dashiell Hammett
Dorothy Sayers
P D James
I've just started reading the first Stieg Larsson book, so I may be reading that entire series (all three of 'em.)
-
Happy Birthday, DR TCB!!!
-
Up late. I shall be back in a bit.....to order DR DRUXY's book......and to talk about the TOD.
-
I was working on lines so much yesterday, I forgot MAD MEN was on!!! I will have to watch it tonight ON DEMAND.
-
Good morning, all! I slept in, spent some time on Facebook, mostly dealing with requests for the dates I need chorus people for the Herbert recording and chatting wth my friend Larry Blank. Now i'm pondering my morning and looking at the rubble of my apartment, debating priorities.
DRs Miss Karen and vixmom, on your birthdays I sent you e-cards. Neither has been read, and I'm wondering if they ended up as - God forbid! - spam? As far as I can tell, I have the correct email addresses.
So, today, after tidying this place and getting some writing accomplished, I have to leave here around noon and head down to Toyland. I have things to do there before I head at 2pm for the Wall Street area and a 3 o'clock meeting with New World Records. It will be a looooong afternoon, not because of the meeting, but because I neither understand the geography of the Wall Street area nor navigate well in unfamiliar territory. Getting back uptown in rush hour may be a bitch.
-
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday to DR TCB !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Well, I got ninety minutes of sleep. I've announced our new CD and orders are already coming in. I may go back to sleep for an hour or two if I can.

Got an interesting review for the new book from a book trade magazine called ForeWARD Clarion.
There’s Mel, There’s Woody, and There’s You: My Life in the Slow Lane
Bruce Kimmel
AuthorHouse
978-1-4520-1116-5
Five Stars (out of Five)
There’s a lot to like about Bruce Kimmel’s zany memoir. Kimmel, a second banana actor who appeared in television shows like “Happy Days” and “The Partridge Family,” never made it anywhere near as big as his Hollywood look-alike, Chevy Chase, so he decided to write and direct plays and films. In 1993, Kimmel became disenchanted with Hollywood and reinvented himself as a record producer.
This book is the story of Kimmel’s television, movie and stage career. He tells it simply, candidly, and with a great deal of wit, self-deprecation and good humor.
To a large extent, the title is indicative of the irony that pervades Kimmel’s all-too-typical Hollywood journey. “There’s Mel, there’s Woody, and there’s you,” is a direct quote from the corporate head of Paramount, a major Hollywood film studio. He told Kimmel after viewing his low-budget spoof, “The First Nudie Musical,” that “We believe in you and think you’re going to be the next thing in comedy.” Kimmel, of course, was “utterly euphoric” to be perceived as keeping company with the likes of Mel Brooks and Woody Allen.
But that was about as far as it went because Paramount tried to kill the film straightaway. The reason was painfully clear: Kimmel’s good friend, Cindy Williams, had agreed to take a leading role in “The First Nudie Musical,” but now she was appearing in the hit television show, “Laverne and Shirley.” Paramount just couldn’t afford the negative publicity from the rising star.
As it turned out, Cindy herself executed a Hollywood-style power play and saved the launch of the film, at least temporarily. “The First Nudie Musical” had only a brief run before Paramount permanently shut it down.
That was perhaps Kimmel’s biggest success and certainly his most stinging disappointment. But it turns out this experience was just one of many career misfortunes Kimmel had to endure. In the book, Kimmel willingly shares his other trials and tribulations, to the point where sympathetic readers may wonder how the author can wake up each day and do it all over again. It is Kimmel’s charming way of handling what life throws at him that ultimately sees the actor-writer-director through the worst of times. Indeed, Kimmel becomes an endearing character in the book for whom the reader cheers when something good happens.
As with any Hollywood memoir, There’s Mel, There’s Woody, and There’s You has its share of kiss-and-tell moments, behind-the-scenes politics, and party-induced shenanigans. But through it all, Bruce Kimmel comes off as basically a nice guy who played the Hollywood game as best he could and lost more than he won.
For readers who want to get an entertaining glimpse of what happens on the backlot and behind the camera, Bruce Kimmel’s memoir fits the bill.

Very nice review, BK!

Page 2 Dance!
-
Happy B'day, TCB.
My problem with the review is the last line which states you lost more than you won...which pretty much shows how little people understand Hollywood or the business in general. I would say you won more than you lost...most actors in Hollywood would envy your career. And it was a long career by Hollywood standards.
TOD:
Films:
I love The Thin Man films
Books:
Philip Marlowe by Raymond Chandler
Philo Vance by S.S. Van Dine
Elvis Cole by Robert Crais
Ed and Am Hunter by Fredric Brown
Harry Stoner by Jonathan Valin (Cincinnati detective)
Marcus Didius Falco by Lindsey Davis (Ancient Rome)
Gordianus the Finder by Steven Saylor (Ancient Rome)
Paul Pine by Howard Browne
Nicholas Bracewell by Edward Marston (Elizabethan theatre settings)
Toby Peters by Stuart Kaminsky (Hollywood in the forties)

Last night I had the weirdest dream about the late John McGlinn In this dream he was locked up in a hospital and behaving crazily (so far, nothing new). Something occurred concerning his treatment, involving a book by some psychotherapist, that could have saved McGlinn, and I suppressed it. This deception led to his release from hospital to someone's home, where he fell down a flight of stairs and was seriously injured. No one was sure he would survive it, but the suppressed book resurfaced and I was left with the qiestion of killing him to protect my deception. I'm clearly carrying some guilt over this man!
-
Happy happy birthday to dear TCB!
-
BK - great to see the reaction to the book
-
Druxy - congrats on the publication of your book!!!

TOD:
The Philip Marlowe books...and many of the movies.

Since were posting reviews today, I want to thank (and share) BK's blurb for my memoir, which appears on the back cover:
“Michael Druxman’s new book is like taking a time machine back
to those thrilling days of yesteryear, a time when there was a real Hollywood with real
movie stars and the kind of class that no longer exists in that place they call Hollywood
today. The tales of his days as a ‘publicist for a price’ are endearing and droll, and the
celebrities he handled make for a grand cast of characters in this very affectionate
memoir. Add to that the stories of writing and directing for Roger Corman, as well as
his childhood memories, and you have a book that’s a fun, fast read.”
Also, one from Charles Pogue:
“Michael B. Druxman may have escaped Hollywood after forty-five years, but
he also survived and thrived there all those years...hardly a feat for the faint-hearted.
His entertaining and amusing memoir tells us how he did it. With tenacity and talent, he
went from PR agent to screenwriter to director and, along the way, rubbed shoulders
with a fascinating array of characters, con-men, and artists. From the stars to the
strugglers, from the saints to the scammers, from those who soared to those who took a
swan dive, they're all here. We meet the great, the near-great, the not-so great who
make Hollywood their home and their hunting ground. Druxman depicts their triumphs
and follies, as well as his own, with the nuanced eye of one who has seen Hollywood at
its meanest and most magnificent.”
Thanks, guys.

Happy Birthday to DR TCB!!!

Happy Birthday, TCB!

Hey y'all. Guess summer is over for me as I head back to school for a teacher "work" day. Where did the summer go?
A fourth Adriana Hofstetter mystery?? Oy and vey, I guess I had better read the latest one, which is purchased, on the shelf, and never got read. Not sure why...
Tonight, I'm going to a Rufus Wainwright concert at the Mountain Winery, which is an outdoor amphitheater with my BFF, Raegena. I'm hoping for lovely weather!
A Big Happy Birthday to DR TCB!!
I'm out
-
Congratulations to DR Druxy on the release of the book! I look forward to reading it, after I finish the two I've got going that I must read for future projects.
-
Nice review, bk! I don't know why I bother to write any reviews when others do it so well. The one thing I took exception with was: "Paramount just couldn’t afford the negative publicity from the rising star." I wish he had explained that a little more; that they didn't want the wholesome image of Cindy associated with a "racy" film.
-
Enjoy Rufus, Matthew. I've seen him several times, once with his sister Martha. Sounds like a great location for a show!
-
Elmore, all the stuff you've got going on musically is very exciting!! Wall Street navagational vibes to you today!

DR DRUXY's book - ORDERED!
-
I need to go back and re-read MR BK's book - I missed the chapter on 'party-induced shenanigans" - although I will take the quote as the title of a chapter in my MEMOIRS - $29.95.
-
So anyway - why should I with hold information from my friends here at HHW....
I was at Wal-Mart this morning, and in the check out aisle, I found out:
The Kardashian Sisters are feuding - Kim is saying Khloe is jealous of her body.
Sandra's New Joy - Sandra Bullock is moving on from her marriage by adopting a little boy.
Angelina is BORED With Brad - this headline needs no further description.
-
DR ELMORE - Dream O Matic 6000 certainly makes the conclusion you came to about JM.....however it will add that your current work to preserve his reputation and material is done with some annoyance at the time it is taking - particularly those questions that only the man himself could answer.
I suggest a seance.

Thank you.

I shall look forward to the new installment of the Andrea Hofstetter series.
My favorite Detective Series include:
The Thin Man
Mr Wong with Boris Karloff
Sherlock Holmes
Bookwise.....Mr Sherlock Holmes takes it, although I also like Ellery Queen and Miss Marple.
-
I cannot stop playing SAINT JOAN.....
-
I found the review quite positive (five stars) but found odd the same things some of you have found odd - that I lost more than I won (is he kidding?), and the party stuff - I rarely went to parties and, in fact, I don't think I mention one of them, unless you count the evening with Groucho or the Elsa Lanchester brunches. Still, very positive and we can pull good quotes from it.
-
One-Eyed Jacks will be sold out at Kritzerland today - not sure exactly when but it should be before nightfall if things continue the way they are.

Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell was twice made into a musical.
The first version, Carmelina was a huge flop, despite a number of fine original songs by Alan Jay Lerner and Burton Lane.
Like every respectable respecter of copyright, they purchased the rights to use the story, and the original was credited on the poster, playbill, album, etc.
What can I say about the second version? It didn't use any original songs. Rather, it took a bunch of old pop hits from the disco era and told the same story in witless and lugubrious fashion. Worse still, it doesn't credit Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell at all; the author claims the story to be original. If I'd adapted something so offensive and smarmy, I'd deflect credit away from myself. And that's not a knock on Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell, it's just how the second musical version feels to me.
Of course this musical that stole everything is a huge hit, and its film version became the top-grossing movie musical in the history of British cinema, Mamma Mia.
:o
Happiest of birthdays, TCB

Congrats to BK on the review and to DR Druxy on the new release!

Off to review lines.......if you think it is boring reading about it....well imagine DOING it.
-
TOD:
It isn't much of a series (only two books) and they are more along the lines of suspense-thrillers than mysteries, but I highly enjoyed Caleb Carr's Alienist books.
-
Too many emails about recording budget! I may never get downtown before 2 pm, so I may go over to Staples to photocopy some things.
-
On the other hand, Caleb Carr's take on Sherlock Holmes (THE ITALIAN SECRETARY?) was a huge bore.

A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO DR TCB!!!
Congratulations to BK on the book review.

Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell - How about Kritzerland releasing the movie soundtrack by Riz Ortolani?

Sherlock Holmes - Jeremy Brett as Holmes

I love the women' suits. And the men's too.
-
Dang. We just got another census in the mail. I guess that means they didn't get the one we sent back.
-
Maybe we should send this one back with different answers.
-
So is Kitty's suit blue or green? I guess the guy doing the lobby card couldn't make up his mind.
-
I like it in blue.
-
I keep forgetting to mention that I watched NINE the movie over the weekend.
I didn't hate it....it was okay.....BUT I did not see the original production OR have I heard the OBC....so I am just taking it as it is....
8 1/2 was one strange movie - and NINE is strange - in its own weird way.....of course the editing in the musical numbers was too much.....but one got used to it.
$5 at Blockbuster......only $5....and worth about that.
-
I like it in blue.
Me too.....the green is too much like an unripe banana.
-
JRand, # two of the Steve Cochran film fest (Tomorrow's Another Day) was also very wonderful!
Did you ever watch that film of his that I sent to you, TELL ME IN THE SUNLIGHT? The actress who stars along with Steve in that film lives nearby. One day I will have to get in touch with her.
-
Hello, everyone.
A GREAT BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DR TCB!!
-
Congrats to DR Druxy on his new book!
-
So is Kitty's suit blue or green? I guess the guy doing the lobby card couldn't make up his mind.
Perhaps her outfit was cut from Mood Suede.
-
I've always been puzzled by the reception BK's new book receives. I think Bruce had a GREAT career! How could someone not be impressed by it?
-
I forgot to wish MBARNUM the happiest of times in his new abode. I hope it works out well for you, Mike.

TTFN.

Thanks DR Jeanne, I should be moving in a couple of weeks or so!! I can't wait!

DR Druxy, looking very forward to reading your book!!!! Congratulations!

Packages are addressed, and my amazing helper found some stuff I've been looking for for months - she's like a homing pigeon - she just pulled down a box from the large stack of boxes stored in the garage, and voila.
-
I then did some banking. Of course, I've been printing out lots of orders, and One-Eyed Jacks is the new champ in terms of copies of a soundtrack ordered directly from Kritzerland. If you want it, speak now or forever hold your piece or your peace or even your peas - by three the sold out sign is going up.

Forty-Five Days?
Yeah, I caught that earlier today.
It's MY FORTY FIVE YEARS (not DAYS) IN HOLLYWOOD AND HOW I ESCAPED ALIVE.
That's either a senior moment or what you get when you rush things. Probably both.
Boy, did I feel like a putz!
-
Congratulations on the book, Druxy!
-
I finished watching the 3rd season of MAD MEN last night, and though it still moves a bit slow for my taste, I am enjoying it.
SPOILERS AHEAD:
What kind of bothers me is what the leading characters did when they decided to quit and start their own firm.
In fact, unless the laws were different in the mid-1960s, their actions made little sense.
Not only would they be liable for both civil and criminal charges (i.e. for theft), but how can they still use the name of their old company (Cooper, Sterling, etc.) since they sold it?
My wife has been watching the 4th season, and she tells me that these issues are not dealt with, which I find strange.
Anybody want to weigh in on this?
-
I don't know if you'd call Lisa Gardner's books mysteries. But since there are detectives who solve cases ... well I really like her D.D Warren series.
-
I saw a movie which I really liked (not sure if anybody here has seen it).I didn't think i'd love it. But it was just sitting at the library. I'm glad i had not read spoilers (and the box does not give anything away) cause i think it would have ruined the end for me (i just checked amazon.com now and the blurb there had a big spoiler).
The movie is REMEMBER ME with Robert Pattinson and Emilie de Raven (from LOST). Really good.
-
Congratulations on the sell-out, Bruce.
Now be prepared for all the "Waahs" from the usual folks in the usual places.
P.S. Isn't it amazing how one particular poster at FSM knows everything about every score being issued....??!!!???

Many thanks, Matthew.
-
Happiest of birthdays, TCB
Thank you Noel.

Did Cillaliz's trial start today? If so, I hope things are going well and justice is served.
Yes, it started today. Was a long day and i have a headache. There was no time for food. That happens a lot in trial. Anyway, the first day is always the worst for me, so I'm glad it's over. It's going pretty slow though, so it could take the whole week.

TOD - some of my favorite mystery series are:
Cleo Coyle's Village Blend Coffee House series

Laura Childs' Charleston tea shop series
Miriam Grace Monfredo's Glynis Tryon (the town librarian) series
Joanne Dobson's Karen Pelletier (English professor) series
I agree with you, Ginny on:

Is that considered bribery? Thank you JMK!

I love the Cat Who mysteries

Hello, everyone.
A GREAT BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DR TCB!!
Thank you, DR Jeanne. I hope you are feeling better.
-
Speaking of crimes, 83 years ago Sacco and Vanzetti were executed...a crime against the ideals of justice.
Indeed. A very somber anniversary on my brithday.
-
A most HAPPY BIRTHDAY to DR TCB!!!!!
Thank you so much, DR Julie!

I'm pleased to announce that my memoir, MY FORTY-FIVE DAYS IN HOLLYWOOD AND HOW I ESCAPED ALIVE, is now available for order directly from the publisher, BearManor Media.
I figured you were just checking to see if we have been reading your posts.
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TCB!!!!!
Thanks, Cilla!

Randy Newman won an Emmy award for Best Song for “When I’m Gone,” from Monk – Mr. Monk And The End Part Ii

-
Happy Birthday, DR TCB! Let me take this opportunity to thank you for all the laughs you provide!
-
I agree with you, Ginny on:
Cleo Coyle's Village Blend Coffee House series
Laura Childs' Charleston tea shop series
T.O.D.
In addition to the two series listed above, I enjoy many other authors of mysteries. However, I must confess that my love of mysteries leans towards the mostly bloodless murders. Therefore, I too, loved the CAT WHO books, but as so often happens, the mysteries became less important that the interchanges between the characters. Maybe I will start over with the THE CAT WHO SAW RED.
Also,
Lorna Barrett
Joanne Fluke
Leslie Meir
Another new author (or new to me) is Tim Myers. He has several series of books. I have just finsihed the five books in the Lighthouse Series. I am now starting the card making series. The best news for Kindle owners is that his books go for $2.99 on Amazon for your Kindle

Thank you very much, KevinH. I am glad that you enjoy my weirdness.

Saint Joan (http://www.kritzerland.com/stJoan.htm) has just arrived!
-
I hope I didn't miss thanking anyone for their good wishes today. You are all such a wonderful group of people that gather at this site, or has been said before, gather in BK's living room.
I guess you could say that it is very much like having a very large and extremely eclectic family. You may argue from time to time, but you are always proud to have them in your family.
Thanks everyone!
-
Congratulations on the sell-out, Bruce.
Now be prepared for all the "Waahs" from the usual folks in the usual places.
P.S. Isn't it amazing how one particular poster at FSM knows everything about every score being issued....??!!!???
He's such a dope. He pontificates and makes statements that are completely untrue as if they were true, the most hilarious being that the three-track masters for One-Eyed Jacks are lost. Lost they may be, but we used a copy of them for CD 2 - all three tracks in pristine condition.
-
Back from various and sundried and a big Chinese chicken salad at Mo's, and then a little visit with Varese Sarabande. We sold out at three.

I like the Aurora Teagarden mysteries.
-
I also like the Lily Bard mysteries.
-
Whilst researching some data for an upcoming review, I found this priceless factoid on Wikipedia:
The song "What a Lie" from that album became a Top 10 country hit for Smith, peaking at #16.
-
Tomorrow Lost Season 6 comes out and I succeeded in not reading or hearing anything about the series 6. I am looking forward to spending the next few days watching it.

I will be reviewing the extra bonus disc found only on the Complete Collection.
I have the first five seasons on Blu-ray if anyone would like to have them cheap. (Before RLP's head explodes, I bought them all myself). :)

Speaking of crimes, 83 years ago Sacco and Vanzetti were executed...a crime against the ideals of justice.
Indeed. A very somber anniversary on my brithday.
That's right...I forgot about that.

I just found out that since out local public tv station didn't show South Pacific on Sunday because of the State Fair, they will be showing it Tuesday Night.

-
I just finished watching HARRY BROWN w/Michael Caine.
What a fine actor.
It's a violent film, but if you enjoy movies like DEATH WISH or GRAN TORINO, it's very entertaining.
-
Maybe I will watch my $1 DVD of One Eyed Jacks.
-

Well, I need to leave and visit my sister for a bit. A woman here at work raises organic, free-range chickens for eggs and I got a dozen eggs for my sister, so I need to deliver them, then hie myself to my very own home.
Until later!

Night all. Must get ready for work.
I lost another hub cap today, luckily I have a steady supply in my trunk. Thank goodness for plastic things that are shinny when new, until I hit the curbs. :'(

Sam, I e-mailed about it, and the address and phone number are in that e-mail - if you need me to resend it just let me know.

-
Been a long day today and I had plenty of posts to catch up on.
-
Liked the review, BK, but I understand your uneasiness about how he views what your life should have been. Is his life any better?
-
TOD: I feel bad that I left Raymond Chandler and Ross Macdonald off my list. I also enjoyed John D. MacDonald's Travis McGee series. And Conan Doyle. And so many others.
-
I saw someone else watched Romance and Cigarettes. (Matthew) I had a good time with the movie. ;)
It was quite enjoyable. It may not have been timeless, but it was what it was on its own terms. I never did quite figure out the time period of the movie though, especially when James Gandolfini and Susan Sarandon talk about seeing "Annie Get Your Gun" with Ethel and Ray Middleton. yet, I liked that, too. I'd rather be left guessing about a few details than have everything so pat that I no longer pay attention to it.
-
So, Druxy, will there be a signing in Austin any time soon?
-
VIBES FOR EVERYONE FOR TUESDAY.
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Amen.
-
With that, I'm having to drag my tired carcass off to be. Night, all.
-
Having slept a grand total of ninety minutes last night I'm giddy with exhaustion, so I think I'll write the notes and hit the road to dreamland.
