Well, you've read the notes, it's about time you read the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - it's about time they do, don't you think?

Good morning, all!

BK, you've known my vote for the past several weeks: kill it NOW!

I got home from my evening out to find another singer who's taking an acting job that affects the recording schedule, and I've been writing emails about "can I move your time to?" to several singers to see if I can accommodate this one actor. I hope so, because he's an old friend, a great singer and I don't want to lose him on the recording.

This afternoon, I've got a housewarming party to attend and, beyond tinkering with a schedule, a lot of work on Mr Victor Herbert and the McGlinnventory.

DR ELMORE - the show you saw sounds most entertaining!

And MR BK saw what sounds like a fun show as well.....

We are certainly theatre mavens here at HHW......what with rehearsals and opening nights and closing nights....and auditions and all.

I realized now that one of my posts is below one of DR ELMORE's posts, I meant to wear my beret in my photo when I switched over to the new JRAND60.....oh well maybe next year.

Congrats to DR GINNY on her walking and to THE VIXTER on starting college.

Interesting article on Shuler's house, DR EDISAURUS......I think the Gilbreath family of CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN lived in Montclair.

I started to watch the latest STAR TREK movie last night on DVD.  First we got the birth of James T. Kirk during a Federation battle...which was okay.....  Then we got a ridiculous action sequence with an insufferable child actor playing JTK as a little boy - driving an "antique" Sting Ray automobile....then we got another insufferable child actor playing Spock as a child having a fist fight with other Vulcan Boys.....then we went to grown up Spock turning down an invitation to the Vulcan Academy because the committee insulted his half human heritage - which was okay.....then we went to a bar where JTK started a fist fight with six Federation Academy cadets over his attentions to a girl named.....Uhura......

And then....I turned it off.

Lima......Miss Allison Hayes and her mother Charlotte were invited by the Peruvian Ambassador to go to Lima to participate in a Friendship Festival back in 1949, but I think that was a different Lima.  ;D

DR JRand60, it's very funny and plays like a long unexpurgated Carol Burnett sketch. What I didn't add last night was that the play's about a writer who's letting his unhappiness with his love life sabotage his writing, first a screenplay that his agent can't sell, which he turns into a musical. These sequences where the screenplay is read and goes from being a romantic comedy to an angry dark murder and the same idea with the musical he adapts it to  are funny, but not funny enough. Peter Scolari tires hard, but it's his poor singing that kills a lot of the musical sequence,. There's one really lovely tune, but the best parts of the show for me are the nightmares with his brother, dead kvetching Jewish parents, and the sibling rivalry and petty jealousies. the parents are great.

A busy day ahead.  When I agreed to do the Fringe show I knew there would be a couple bottleneck days that would be tricky time-wise, and today is one of them.

It's our final FringeNYC performance this afternoon of the Hurricane Katrina play, aptly falling on the five year anniversary of the storm.  We're doing it as a benefit performance for Hands on New Orleans.  It's also the last day of the Fringe Festival, so after the show, not only do we have to load our stuff out of the Soho Playhouse, but we have to help load out the Festival from the venue.  Stuff like dismanteling the plot and removing the fixtures.

Then, while venue load-out is going on, uptown at the Metropolitan Room is the CD release party for the Clear Blue Tuesday soundtrack that Sh-k-Boom is doing.  I will try to get over there for at least part of that.  Afterwards, I have stuff I have to do for Show Choir.  We start rehearsals on Tuesday, and tomorrow is our final pre-production team meeting.

For those that might be interested. I came across yesterday that AMAZON is having a $5.00 MP3 downlaod sale. I was able to replace a couple of cds that seemed to have disappeared from my collection.

Pal Joey (Studio 1950)
Paint Your Wagon
Fiddler On The Roof (Alfred Molina)
Assassins (Broadway)
Pacific Overtures (Broadway Revival)

and one that I think everyone who enjoyed Billy Barnes' LA will like this one:
The Billy Barnes Revue with many of the the same performers in BB's LA

Pal Joey & Paint Your Wagon (and also original casts of Finian's Rainbow, Brigadoon, South Pacific, Carousel) are what I like to call "bootleg" releases. But they are not really. Their copyright has expired in Europe and there is a company in England that are re-releasing them. I believe they do not have the master tapes, but use other sources to produce their releses.

Other $5.00 Broadway downloads are
Big River
Nine (Broadway revival)
Billy Elliott (Original cast. Not sure if it means London or Broadway)
State Fair 1945 Radio Broadcast
Marigold (London cast) Never heard of this one before
Grey Gardens (Broadway Cast)
Little Mermaid (Broadway)
9 to 5 (Broadway)
Monsters Inc (Film)
The Fantasticks (Off-Broadway Original cast)
One Touch of Venus (Broadway)
Fiorello! (Not sure if this is the "bootleg" or not but does not have the Capitol or Broadway Angel Logo on the cover)

Some related Vocal albums
Shirley Temple at the movies
Nancy Wilson & Cannonball Addlerly
Lena Horn (Stormy Weather)
Sarah Vaughn (After Hours)
Nancy Wilson & George Shearing (The Swingin's Mutual)
Hoagy Sings Carmichael

Several Ultra Lounge cds

and for $5.94 you can get William Shatners The Transformed Man

Happy Hunting (Not the musical but good luck in finding something you might like.)

EMMY AWARDS.......Emmy Rossum or Faye Emmyson?

I really hope Kyra gets one this year. She's been nominated 5 times, (every year I've worked on it) and deserves to win! Also, Andre Braugher from Men of a Certain Age is nominated, along with Beau Bridges who guest starred as a cross-dressing former detective. Both of the guys were great. I would be really happy if Andre won; he was the emotional core of that show.

As for our Mercer doc, which is also up for an Emmy tonight, well...we'll probably hoist a few...to numb the pain.

Well, I certainly have mixed feelings about the doc. On the one hand it would be a nice thing to win and I know that our work was one reason it was nominated. But I also feel that if we were allowed to make the film it should have been, it would stand a good change of winning and I would feel proud. But now if it wins, everyone on the team except for two people would feel that it was validating bad behavior and bad decisions on the part of a couple of people. The real reason it has done as well as it has is because Johnny is so wonderful.

I feel a little left out, not being at home while the rest of the family is getting together, but if I had gone, I would have gotten no rest and lots of stress, so I'm glad I didn't go, but it's a little sad nonetheless

And I see that the EMMY awards are on this evening.

Anybody planning to watch them?

I'll be watching...for the most part.  I also have cat-watching/feeding duty for a friend and I need to return Larry's laptop (hopefully, the recording of South Pacific worked!), and I have another thing to record at the same time, but it should all work out. :)

For those that might be interested. I came across yesterday that AMAZON is having a $5.00 MP3 downlaod sale. I was able to replace a couple of cds that seemed to have disappeared from my collection.

Pal Joey (Studio 1950)
Paint Your Wagon
Fiddler On The Roof (Alfred Molina)
Assassins (Broadway)
Pacific Overtures (Broadway Revival)

and one that I think everyone who enjoyed Billy Barnes' LA will like this one:
The Billy Barnes Revue with many of the the same performers in BB's LA

Pal Joey & Paint Your Wagon (and also original casts of Finian's Rainbow, Brigadoon, South Pacific, Carousel) are what I like to call "bootleg" releases. But they are not really. Their copyright has expired in Europe and there is a company in England that are re-releasing them. I believe they do not have the master tapes, but use other sources to produce their releses.

Other $5.00 Broadway downloads are
Big River
Nine (Broadway revival)
Billy Elliott (Original cast. Not sure if it means London or Broadway)
State Fair 1945 Radio Broadcast
Marigold (London cast) Never heard of this one before
Grey Gardens (Broadway Cast)
Little Mermaid (Broadway)
9 to 5 (Broadway)
Monsters Inc (Film)
The Fantasticks (Off-Broadway Original cast)
One Touch of Venus (Broadway)
Fiorello! (Not sure if this is the "bootleg" or not but does not have the Capitol or Broadway Angel Logo on the cover)

Some related Vocal albums
Shirley Temple at the movies
Nancy Wilson & Cannonball Addlerly
Lena Horn (Stormy Weather)
Sarah Vaughn (After Hours)
Nancy Wilson & George Shearing (The Swingin's Mutual)
Hoagy Sings Carmichael

Several Ultra Lounge cds

and for $5.94 you can get William Shatners The Transformed Man

Happy Hunting (Not the musical but good luck in finding something you might like.)

What a coinkydink!  I just got a $5 credit for Amazon's MP3s!  Thanks for the info, Michael!

I've done two-thirds of the liner notes for the new show release.  It had such an interesting gestation and while I can't be verbose about it, I at least wanted to touch on all its salient points.

So, my email exchange with Don Black.

It's quite possible that we might cast an African American as Joe Gillis in Sunset Blvd.  There is a scene in the show between Betty and Joe when they are discussing the best way to write a movie and Betty sings "No one takes a black friend to a restaurant".  It was really bugging me after auditions yesterday that that line might be an issue.  In fact, such an issue that it was in some of the music I chose for callbacks on Wednesday.

So, I looked up Don Black's info on the 'net, and emailed him my dilemma.  This morning I got an email back from him understanding our issue and he sent me another lyric.  That was really exciting.

In the score, there are alternate lyrics here and there, which surprised me.  But what surprised me more was that there wasn't an alternate lyric for that line.  I realize that in the time period of the show, that was normal, but seeing as though the contender is an African American, I felt weird about it.  It was either going to be an unwanted laugh, or end up being offensive.

Oh, the new line  - Make sure you don't criticise the FBI

It will take a little shoehorning with the notes, but it will work fine.

The previous CD release of our show title not only was a remix attempting to match the original album mix, which wasn't good, it had no notes at all, just what was on the LP.  So, this package will be a really nice new version of the entire thing - LP mix, new mix, and extensive liner notes with a good amount of photographs.  I'm hoping that even people who have the previous release (now oop and quite pricey) will want this for the clarity of the new mix, the original mix, and a little history of the show.

Good Evening!

I'm up, I'm up... And, well...

I woke up around 8:30... Listened to "The Puzzler" segment on "Weekend Edition", then went to back to bed for a little bit...

Then about an hour later, I listened to closing segment of "Weekend Edition"... Then went back to bed... Again.

And so on and so forth.

By the time I finally put my feet on the floor around 12:30pm, I realized that I was feeling like crap - a slight headache and muscle aches. So, I just planted myself on the couch in the living room for a bit... Then napped again...

I did manage to make it out of the apartment to run an errand around 3:00, but by the time I made it back here around 5:30, all I wanted to do was nap. Again. And I did.

You get the picture.

yadda-yadda-yadda...

Oy and vey, I just flipped to the EMMYs.  What is that thing January Jones is wearing?  Do these people look in the mirror?  Julia Ormond's dress is worse - how that's possible I don't know.  Blechhh.

And what has happened to Brenda Vaccaro?  She's as big as a house.  It is amusing to watch this not having ever seen 99% of what is nominated. But from the clips, it's just the same old same old, including the trailer for Boardwalk Empire - good to see The Untouchables coming back :)

Who is this blonde thing and why is she singing a song for a friend who died of cancer? Oh, I see, it's the death montage - what a sickening way of presenting it - she made it all about her, or at least the producers of the show allowed her to do so.  Embarrassing.

That's the singer, Jewel.

A singer Jewel?  How have I managed to never hear of her or her music?  And I'm going to keep it that way - that studied, pretentious, and completely fake singing, emoting - just awful.

Well, she and her guitar and her snaggle-tooth have been around for almost 20 years now, so...

At least they managed to show all of those being remembered on the TV screen this year. -Which is something the Emmy-winning broadcast of the The Tonys hasn't managed to do in a couple of years.

Matt Hough sent me a DVD of SOUTH PACIFIC and I've just watched - and wept through most of - Act One. It's not perfect but it is a good record of a perfect production. I even like the Lt Cable, who's much better than I thought. He sure sang the hell out of "Younger Than Springtime." Act Two tomorrow.

Title: Re: ABOUT TIME

Great story.

Yippee to Kyra! I went to a surprise birthday dinner for the Closer producer I worked with. The other producer teammate was there, plus the editor who got my job. (Super nice guy so I can't resent him!) Plus the previous Closer producer who had twins and never came back to work. I was worried it would be awkward (the producer's husband invited me) but everyone quickly loosened up and we had a great time.

Went out to a family dinner and then came home. I did some paper work while we watched Mystery on PBS. By the time it was over there was 15 minutes to go and saw all the Best Program winners and Al Pacino winning. My god here is one of the finest actors and he hems and haws his way through his speech. They should have cut him off but they didn't because he was Al Pacino.

Before I go to bed has anyone guessed Minnie's Boys as  the next show cd?

It was originally released on Project 3 a label not know for their musical theater catalogue as their only other release was Cry For Us All which BK has already released.

I have it. The inlay card has incorrect track line up. If this is the CD I would like to know why songs taht were not in the show on opening were records and songs that were there on opening night weren't recorded.

If this is the cd I will try to be one of the 1st 100 to buy

My only gripe with tonights Emmys was that the IN MEMORIAM did not show Connie Hines, star of MISTER ED.

I mean, that is an iconic show! And Connie Hines did more television then Patricia Neal did.
