Yep, Nov 5th. I may come in a day early and leave on Sunday. I'm bringing my mom and her other half and making a little vacation out of it, so she'll stop nagging me to take her whenever I go up to work.

My regular hotels (Wellington, Edison) are @ $400/night! So I will be looking for cheap hotels, at least for me and Greg. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear! I told her I'd take her before THE CLOSER bailed on me, and never expected to be out of work this long, so...putting 4 people up in NY...ouch!

Good morning, all! It looks as if I forgot to post what I wrote at 6:30 this morning. Damn!

I've been to the NYU Dental Clinic - because of the MTA subway and crosstown bus idiocy, I was 15 minutes late since it took me an hour  to get there - and now I am at Toyland, checking in on the office since I've not been here since last week and God alone knows where my colleague Curtis may be these days. I believe he's out of town.

I am ready to head uptown, stopping first at the NYPL for some research. I'm also thinking seriously replacing the diva tenor with another singer, and I have to run that by the musical director. I hope the tenor I have in mind is available. I may be cutting off my nose to spite my face, but I won't let an unknown on a diva trip back me into a corner. If I were recording NAUGHTY MARIETTA and needed the world's greatest coloratura soprano for the lead, I'd do whatever I could to accommodate her wishes, but no one knows this tenor's work, talented though he may be.

TOD:
DVD: I should just return the three Netflix items; I don't remember what they are any more!
CD: 40 discs of Johann Strauss music, Guy Haines, Liz Callaway
   VCR: This porn is stale!

DR edisaurus - After checking with my Twitter-friends, here are some sites to check out for hotel deals:

Quickbook (http://www.quikbook.com/10009.asp)

Best Travel Deal$ (http://besttraveldeals.net/)

NY Inns (http://www.nyinns.com/) - This is a group of boutique hotels.

AirBnB (http://www.airbnb.com/) - This is sort of like an apartment-share site. People list everything from spare mattresses to spare rooms to currently empty apartments for very reasonable fees.

And here's a listing from NewYorkology (http://www.newyorkology.com/archives/2010/08/ny_hotel_deals.php) detailing some hotel deals.  This article is from the end of August, but some of the rates still may apply.

Last night's Pwoject Wunway:

SPOILERS MAY BE HERE

This has been an unusual, but entertaining, season so far.  We've had high drama surrounding one contestant named Michael Costello.  A lot of the designers have been contemptuous of Michael's lack of fundamental sewing skills.  Yet, he has won two challenges and has been roundly defended by the judges while they've castigated some of the others for throwing Michael "under the bus" in order to deflect attention away from their own shortcomings.  Tim even called out one of them in a post-runway moment, asking all of them why they let "Gretchen" (the talented/the horrid/the presumptuous) bully them into doing a collection (team challenge) that was uniformly abysmal (Gretchen had a hand in every one of six designs and none of them was very good).  Gretchen won the first two challenges, and Michael won the third. Gretchen then called into question the sanity of the judges and got her "minions" on an anti-Michael rampage that, in essence, declared that Michael was "not" a "designer" and that his presence should not be borne.  Another player, "Ivy H", is a Parsons-strained seamstress.  That latter word is the term Michael Kors uses to refer to her skills.  Ivy is another who has been particularly rude/mean to Michael C.   They've had no confrontations.  She simply revels in her contempt for his lack of comparable (to her own) skills.  Ivy did well in last night's challenge, but it was a labored project for her.  The "fun" designers left are "Mondo Guerra" who is pretty much unique and Michael C. who seems to make magic and wow the judges even while his fellow designers snipe about him (still) while they labor with their own designs.  Michael C won't simply do a design and execute it....he makes four or five dresses...four or five tops....and that works for him.  He picks the ones that work best together.   Mondo and Michael C were partnered a week ago.  It started badly with Mondo sniping at Michael that he wasn't happy about the partnership.  It all worked out extremely well.  Michael impressed Mondo and they are now very good friends.  Another designer -- Andy from Hawaii -- has also been down on Michael but was seen last night defending Michael's abilities to design clothes.

Next week's episode promises a major meltdown for one of the designers.  Looks like everyone is going to go into a frenzy.  Hope it lives up to the red-herring promotion edit!

SPOILERS BE ENDED HERE

JRand: I guess Peter Filichia didn't get the word about your production. Here's what he wrote today about "Never Too Late":

That I predict we’ll never see Never Too Late (1,007 performances) may seem odd, for it was once done in most every stock outfit and community theater. The 1962 comedy concerns Harry and Edith, a couple in their late forties whose daughter Kate and son-in-law Charlie recently married and came to live with them so they can save to buy their own house. Kate wants a baby, but in a twist of fate, it’s the middle-aged Edith who gets pregnant. Now that Edith must take it easy, Kate must do all the housework.

Why wasn’t she doing it before? Because, you infer, she had a job. No. Edith is -- and Kate is too, as the song goes in Working -- “Just a housewife.” All right, Edith comes from the generation where that was a woman’s career, but we have less understanding even in 1962 why a young woman like Kate wouldn’t go to work given that she doesn’t have a house of her own to keep. And what young married couple today could bear to live with parents? Here’s a play whose time has definitely passed.

http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/09/17/promises-promises-will-close-but-questions-remain/?ref=arts

Well... In this case, the producers and creative team did not trust the original material to begin with, so... I know the whole "Mad Men" update was part of the plan to attract audiences, but... Well...

I believe the mistake the producers made was not promoting the actual SHOW itself after it opened, and basically proved itself critic-proof.  It also doesn't help that all of the artwork, posters and promo materials are based on the faces of Sean Hayes and Kristin Chenoweth.  There's nothing there to tell anyone what the show is about.  And since the show has been selling quite well, they've stopped running the TV commercials as often as they used to.

Showbiz is just showBIZ.

Tell THAT to our audiences.  It's a situation IN A PLAY, BUB - not a kitchen sink reality drama. And by the way - he is wrong.  They don't "come to live with them" - they have always lived with them, on Harry & Edith's invitation.  And Kate doesn't decide she wants to have a baby until the end of Act Two.  READ THE PLAY BEFORE YOU TALK ABOUT IT, IDIOT.

And of course I am sure Mr Fill-Ickia who lurks here will take my post to heart.

Thanks for letting me know, DR JOHN G  ;D

He's also wrong about Harry's age.....Harry says:  "When he graduates from college, I will be going on 83 - if he's smart..."

If Harry is in his late 40's.....that means the kid will spend about 20 years  matriculating.

And in this paragraph, Filichia seems to be a bit out of touch:  More and more young couples are, in fact, living with their parents (one set or the other).  The economy, the (still-)overpriced housing market (home owners will disagree, natch), the difficult job market all contribute to newlyweds needing to find a price break on living and many find it "at home" with the folks.

I don't suggest he's wrong overall...but in Asian and Latino communities in California, there are more instances of young folks living with the parental units.  And those communities are LARGE out here.  The differences, of course, are that everyone works.

I don't think the concept has passed at all.  It's only passé in certain demographic groups.

And speaking of handymen....

Our handyman showed up at 10:30. He was supposed to be here at 10:00.

And he's now up in the Bronx finding the "right tool" and getting the "right part".

Ah, well...

DR JRand, Peter Filichia is a great guy and a good friend. He has an email address on his Theatremania column. You should correct him. He's a good sport.

Well, the Diva Tenor is paying for the transpositions himself, and I am no longer involved with it. He's clearly cut his own throat because hell will freeze over before I ever work with him again. Or recommend him. His behavior was sneaky, manipulative and a breach of protocol; and since he's only looking now at the music he was given in May, I suspect we'll record a rather shallow but highly egocentric performance.

Now that this tsuris is over, maybe I'll stop being crabby.

I have corresponded with Peter Filichia over the years via e-mail and he has always been pleasant. He's such a booster of theater, cheerleading, even, that he would likely appreciate hearing from you.

He has also written a number of great liner notes for BK's releases over the years. I particularly like the ones he did for "Prettybelle." But then, I like anything to do with that score.

One way is that you can click on the "x" to the right of a person's post (when you hover your cursor over one of their posts) and you'll get the option to hide that person.

All CDs are shipped - it took three hours to do it all.  Then we went to storage where we only found one of the two Luker charts requested and that one only had the piano part and a sax part.  But I think that's all that was on the track and that the bass and drums probably played from the piano chart.  As to Don't Fence Me In, I don't think there was an orchestration on that either - but we had not even a piano/vocal, not even in Vinnie's booth copies.

Yesterday I got an e-mail from my boss that simply stated "Jesus will be here tomorrow at 8:30"

It gave me quite a start, until I remembered that Jesus works in our Information Technology Division and is resposible for updating my bosses Blackberry.

LOL!!! ;D

We were in Best Buys in "electric avenue" looking for a TV a while ago, and saw a nice one with the sound off to demonstrate close-captioning. The show was about the giant anaconda, and the wildlife guy and his helper were reaching into a creek and pulling up the snake, trying to find the end of it because it was so large. The captions were saying:

Jesus--this is a big snake!
Jesus--I've never seen anything like this.
Jesus--this is huge!

We finally realized that the guy who was talking was Hispanic and named Jesus!

Although I had no idea who this guy was until just now, but a former contestant from India's version of SURVIVOR asked me to be his Facebook friend.

Evidently, we share a common interest in (and both belong to the Facebook page of) a certain, obscure 1970s Japanese science fiction show and we are both Facebook friends with a certain obscure Indian film director. Because of the commonality he decided we should be pals. I like that.

I will probably miss the PWOJECT WUNWAY episode this week - usually watch on Saturday night, but we will be breaking the set.

If someone would like to let me know who went home.

Gretchen and Ivy are both poisonous - and I am looking forward to the day when they bite the dust.  And the guy from Hawaii has such BAD skin, it is hard to watch him in HD.  I do like Mondo.

SPOILAGE

If you mean who went home last night (?), it was Michael Drummond (whose outfit was much less HIDEOUS than Andy's....but as they discussed, they needed to send home the person they didn't want to see any more from...and I thought for sure they meant Valerie --who patently ignored Michael Kors' remark last week about all the judges being bored with her constant use of dark blue and burgundy -- but no...it was Michael D!).  And Mondo won the challenge...as Heidi put it, he was "the clear winner").

END SPOILAGE

Friday evening greetings from Orlando!  Our flight was smooth and there were several very excited little girls on their way to Disney World and breakfast with the Princesses.  It was fun to listen to them talk.  We got our rental car and found our hotel with no problem.  Drove around a bit and finally had a late lunch/early dinner at Houlihan's.  Then we made our way to St. Alban's Cathedral, where tomorrow's consecration takes place.  It's only about 5 miles from where we're staying, so we don't have to get up real early in the morning.  We' re just relaxing in our room tonight - a day of travel was quite tiring for me.

Jane, go to you account and then click on "edit friends" - that will bring up your entire friend list and there you will have the option of nuking anyone you like.

Thanks.  I wonder why it doesn't just say "delete" instead of "remove connection"-lol.  BTW that is not the reason I didn't know where it was.

Removing connections, for me, is better than hiding the people.  I have no objection with them contacting me at a future date.

Tomorrow would have been John McGlinn's 57th birthday. I will be working on a recording of music he would have eventually gotten to if he hadn't been such an insane self-destructive person. I hope you will all take a moment to listen to something from one of his recordings.

I will be on a plane tomorrow with my MP3 and will listen to, as always, "All the Things You Are" and "Some Girl Is on Your Mind," two recordings as near perfect as I will ever hear. I wish he had gotten to record all of "Sweet Adeline."

I was rather surprised to find how much I enjoy that aspect of FB and I've met interesting people around the world.  It bother's me when someone asks to be my friend and then never communicates.  To clarify, I'm not talking about my personal friends only new FB friend's.

I accidentally hid someone once and they were still on my list.  I'll double check after I remove someone.  First I removed all requests to other people to be my friend.  Obviously my requests were missed because these are people I know.  I stick with that explanation. :)

This is my first five-day work week in two months!

It feels weird!

What's weird for me is ONLY having a 5-day work week. ;)

I have taken advantage of a very flexible work schedule, thanks to an accommodating supervisor (who will no longer be my supervisor :P).  And because of that flexible work schedule, I'd usually come in late (usually around 11:00 am) and leave sort of late, so that I would either use vacation quite a bit or more often than not, work on Saturdays...VERY often.  Since there is no telling who will be the new supervisor (yet), I have been getting to work earlier, usually between 9:00 and 9:30 am.  Because of that, I've been leaving earlier, but getting all my time in for the week so that I HAVEN'T have to work Saturdays!  That's weird to me!

:D

They don't get any notice that you've removed them.  They sometimes find out and can ask to be friends again.  I've had a couple people do that when I've deleted them.  If anyone has been offended, I don't know about it...maybe they aren't talking to me, lol

Good Evening!

Since I had ended up being cooped up in my apartment for most of the day, I decided to head out for a nice long walk earlier.  I headed over to Broadway and ended up walking down to 93rd Street to Advent Lutheran Church where a Twitter-friend of mine, Kim Giordano, was giving a voice recital. And it turned out to be quite a nice recital. Songs by Bellini, Schubert, Schumann and Canteloube were on the first half, and the second half consisted of Hundley, Mollicone and Sondheim.  -And it turned out that the composer, Richard Hundley, was in attendance.

And then I walked back home.

Every day for the past month I have been driving by a string of signs advertising all you can eat Belgian waffles at the St Johns Lutheran Church....I have been hungry for them every time I see the sign.....tomorrow is the day!!  Woo Hoo. Finally I get to eat the waffles.

Oh! Belgian wafels! Will they be offering dinges too?

This is a Lutheran church in Iowa....they spell it Waffle ;)

Today marked the final episode of the what was the longest running dramatic show. As The World Turns stopped spinning after 54 years on the air and 13,858 episodes. La grande dame Helen Hughes passed only 6 weeks before the final episode was taped. She was on the first episode

I was glad to watch most of it today.  I grew up with As the World Turns

DR KevinH - This may have been asked and answered before, but... -Who is in your avatar?

I am sure there are some people who would like Sam Worthington to be in their avatar! :-)

Trying to get the kid to see this band I'm so crazy about with me next weekend.  I think I'm actually really pretty cool for my age.   Always have liked new live music, and new venues to go to.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed. 8)

I think dear reader Laura should do a book of her photographs, entitled Today I Saw... Do it, do it now - the time is nigh.

I'd make sure my library buys it!

DR Matthew - Have you checked out the Sunset Blvd. clips from the Arvada Center with Ann Crumb and Kevin Earley on YouTube and/or Playbill.com?  The singing is fine, but those strings! :-\

I know!!!  I'm hoping for a better orchestra  LOL
