Title: WHERE DID THE TIME GO?
Post by: bk on May 06, 2004, 12:02:18 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've taken time out to read the notes (and I hope time was appreciative of the date - where did you take time?  Dinner?  A show?), and now you must take the time to post until the cows come home.

Here's to George and his Deux Deus.
That doesn't sound right, does it?   :-\

Good enough for me!  Thanks...and thank you Panni, also!

Well, my birthday dinner at Applebee's was very good, and we had very good service...and very little time in between each time that we saw our server (unlike lunch).  I had the chicken fried steak (I almost had the chicken fried chicken, but I stuck with the steak instead ;)).  Anyway, it was quite good, as always.  I had a side salad instead of the vegetables that come with the meal (for only $1.99 more, and since I wasn't paying, I didn't care), and the garlic mashed potatoes.  I love their mashed potatoes.  They have bits of the skin still mixed in and when you pour some extra country gravy over them, mmmmm!! ;D

For dessert, we all had the Triple Chocolate Meltdown (http://www.applebees.com/menu/desserts_new.html) (except my niece, who had the chimi-cheesecake).  Very good, but with as much as I ate for the meal, then I actually had the free sundae because of my birthday THEN the Triple Chocolate Meltdown...well, let’s just say that I really overdid it.  But it was worth it!

So again, thanks for all the well-wishes.  I know it’s not unique...everyone here gets them!  That's why we all love it here!

The President of the WGA must be a HHW lurker. Got an email bringing the membership up to date on the frenzied (and so far unproductive) contract negotiations -- in which he uses the phrase "we're willing to negotiate until the cows come home."
The cows better not be carrying picket signs is all I can say.

Suddenly I'm wide awake.
Tracy-Hepburn - I think ADAM'S RIB is my favorite of their films together. And although the movie has not aged well, they were very touching in GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER.
Tracy alone - he did so many great films - IMHO one of the best screen actors ever. BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK is certainly up there. CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS. I'll have to think about others. It's hard to pick.
Hepburn - I have to admit that I'm not a huge fan - I find her too mannered. I think her best performance was in LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT. Liked her in THE PHILADELPHIA STORY. Will think of others later.

I simply adore DESK SET....lovely performances all around starting with Hepburn and Tracy of course....but continuing on down through Joan Blondell, Sue Randall, Dina Merrill, Neva Patterson, and especially Gig Young who is one of my favorite actors.

If he had played ALL of those roles opposite Rock and Doris, then it would have been a contest.

His role as Mike in DESK SET is so perfectly written and played.

And all those funny lines....."Yes, there's something about the way you wear that pencil in your hair that spells money...."
After Mike finally asks Bunny (Kathryn) to the dance she says:  "Oh, I'd better write that down...."  And he replies:  "Yes, you'd better...."
When Tracy goes into his drunk routine back at Bunny's apartment....
When Bunny says:  "It has been my experience when a car circles slowly around the block, he is merely looking for a place to park...."

LOL....if any DR hasn't seen this movie...run don't walk.

Together Tracy & Hepburn:  Desk Set (in case you haven't guessed) and Adam's Rib.

Apart....it's early but most have been mentioned....as DRPANNI wrote:

Tracy:  Bad Day at Black Rock with more great supporting performances including Anne Francis & John Ericson as brother and sister!
Judgment at Nuremburg, The Mountain, A Guy Named Joe.

Hepburn:  Summertime, Suddenly Last Summer, Stage Door.

I will stop at three each to leave some for the other DR's.

The previous posts (yesterday) about LONGTIME COMPANION made me think of generational differences in film tastes. The lovely daughter has pretty good taste in films, but of course there are movies she likes that do not interest me at all, and movies I like that she's never heard of (but will eventually see, I hope). So... a couple of years ago when I was still living in Boulder, I brought her with me to the Emmy Awards (Showtime paid for the flight, hotel, etc - so it was a huge treat for her). Showtime arranged a dinner for their nominees and I saw that we were sitting with Bruce Davison. Rachel was thrilled. "LONGTIME COMPANION!" I said to her. "No. X-MEN!" she said to me. Oh well.
Bruce turned out to be quite acerbic and hilarious. He and Rachel discussed X-MEN at length. She was pleased. (A funny sidebar - What I totally spaced on until days later was that he had been in something I wrote which was so badly directed that I rarely put it on my resume and had totally wiped it out of my head. I later looked it up on his resume and it's listed right next to LONGTIME COMPANION. Go figure.)

"Summertime" if my favourite Kate Hepburn movie with "African Queen" right up there too. Favourite Spencer Tracy film would be "Inherit The Wind". I enjoyed his performance in "It's a Mad Mad World" which I watched last weekend.

Good morning, all!  I had a wonderful evening with a retired press agent friend who invited me to the dress of BYE BYE BIRDIE at Encores!  The production and cast, especially Karen Ziemba, are fantastic, and I hope the show excites some producer enough to transfer it.   After the show, dinner at Joe Allen's, and I got home around 12:30.  This morning my allergies are having a good time walking over me, and I need some Tylenol; I don't find the Claritin doing much at all.

Dear Friend BK, I tried to email you yesterday and all three attempts were returned as undeliverable.  Has anyone else reported this?

Okay, TOD:  I am not much of a Hepburn fan; like other "stars" whose status I question, I don't get it; I don't see what I'm missing that others claim to see in the persona or the performance.  I prefer Audrey to Katharine.  That said, there are films I've  enjoyed:

HEPBURN
The Philadelphia Story
The African Queen
The Lion in Winter

TRACY
Inherit the Wind
It's A Mad, Mad World
Father of the Bride

T&H
Adam's Rib

I've never seen WOMAN OF THE YEAR, and I think GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER is truly terrible; it's one of the few times I've sat in the theatre and wished the projector would break.
Title: Re:WHERE DID THE TIME GO?

BRINGING UP BABY
SYLVIA SCARLET
THE LION IN WINTER
are my top three Kates.

JUDGEMENT AT NUREMBURG
BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK
4 X MAD WORLD
are my top three Spencers.

GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER
ADAM'S RIB
WOMAN OF THE YEAR
are my top three together.
I know that the first one has not aged well, but, their total devotion to each other is evident in every frame that they share.  I'm also really fond of Spencer's reaction to "Boysenberry."

DR Elmore, in the Playbill On-Line article about Encores Bye Bye Birdie, they say a production is planned for this coming season. One that has nothing to do w/the Encores staging so I don't know if Karen Ziemba will be in it, or if it will even happen but that's the scoop according to POL.
Title: Re:WHERE DID THE TIME GO?
Post by: Dan-in-Toronto on May 06, 2004, 06:21:50 AM
I loved Katharine Hepburn in The Rainmaker and Bringing Up Baby, and I would consider her performance in Suddenly Last Summer a guilty pleasure. Spencer Tracy was superb in Father of the Bride, Judgment at Nuremburg, and The Last Hurrah. For Tracy and Hepburn together, I'd choose Pat and Mike. (Adam's Rib and Woman of the Year got a little too long-winded for me.) Guess Who's Coming To Dinner? Yes, truly terrible, IMADREHO (in my and DR Elmore's humble opinions).

A major production of BIRDIE has been announced for DC sometime next season.  Nobody will say if this is the Encores! production or not, but rumor has it that this transfer is one of the reasons Jerry Zaks replaced Kathleen Marshall as director of the Encores! version.  As for Karen, she'll be busy until sometime in July playing Adelaide in Papermill's GUYS AND DOLLS.

I've been reduced to lurking for the past few days.  There's either been constant interuptions at work as I was attempting to post or my mind was muddled when I did have the time to myself.  Plus I was kind of thrown by the Love topic of the other day.  My love life of late has been non-descript and reading everyone's posts just drove that fact home.  And I hate it when facts are driven home 'cause I usually have to pay for the cab fare.  Anyway...

I do love Hepburn and Tracy.  My favorite film of theirs is Pat and Mike.  The writing is crisp and witty, Cukor's direction is light and breezy, and Hepburn and Tracy never had a better on-screen relationship.  (It's also fun to see the sports stars of the period like Babe Didrickson and Don Budge.)

I love Hepburn singularly in Summertime.  I think it's one of her least flamboyant perfomances and thus her most touching.  My favorite Spencer Tracy movie is The Old Man and the Sea, with Captains Courageous a close second.

Favorite Hepburn: STAGE DOOR

Favorite Tracey: Toss up between DANTE'S INFERNO and IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD.

Together: GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER

I like Tracey a lot, but never have been crazy about Hepburn.

Good Morning!

<cough, cough>

Well... After finally getting to bed around ??:00, I did manage to get a pretty good night's sleep.  However, I was woken up by my cell phone ringing.  However, it was a follow up phone call from one of my docs, so that was worth the "wake up call".  -And I needed to get out of bed anyway.

<cough, cough>

-And, yes, I'm coughing this morning.  I'm not sure exactly what's causing it.  I don't feel like my acid reflux is coming back, so I'm thinking that maybe I've caught a slight cold and/or my allergies are kicking in.  I'm going to place another call to my other doc to see what she suggests I take.  It's not uncomfortable, just annoying.

OK - that's enough of my own travails for this morning...

As for the topic of the day...  Ditto.  I remember when AMC used various scenes from "Desk Set" to demonstrate the differences between "pan and scan" and "widescreen".  -There were certain scenes where a major character was left out of the picture - literally!  You could hear their voice, but not see them.  Very informative and educational - and, as you can tell, it stuck with me.

OK - I need to get the rest of my cobwebs cleared out before heading in for the matinee.

Laters...

<cough>

DRs Panni and MBarnum - Thanks for the Extra Good Health Vibes!

Actually, after a nice, long, hot shower my sinuses seem much clearer.  Guess I just needed to wake up. ;)

But, trust me, after what I went through two weeks ago, a little cough is nothing compared to what I went through two weeks ago.  -And least the sinus drainage (sorry to be so graphic) means my body is actually working correctly so... -Always a sunny side...

OK - Time to head to the Metro...

For years and years, I insisted ADAM'S RIB was my favorite Tracy/Hepburn. When I got the DVD of PAT & MIKE and watched it again, I had a new favorite. I truly think it's magnificent, certainly the team at their peak. And PAT & MIKE has the added bonus of the ever wonderful Aldo Ray, so I have to rank it a bit above ADAM'S RIB. STATE OF THE UNION has some wonderful work by the pair too, and I do love DESK SET even if I think it's too long to support the material. That rooftop IQ test faceoff between the two of them is one of the best things they ever did together.

Have any of you ever noticed that Emeric - the IBM computer in DESK SET is also on board the Seaview in VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA? Fox got a lot of nice use out of that prop.

Favorite Hepburn pictures:

LITTLE WOMEN
BRINGING UP BABY
HOLIDAY
SUMMERTIME
THE LION IN WINTER

Favorite Tracy pictures:

SAN FRANCISCO
FATHER OF THE BRIDE
BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK
INHERIT THE WIND
JUDGMENT AT NUREMBURG

Speaking of dance, did anyone catch the Live from Lincoln Center celebration of George Balanchine's 100th birthday last night?  It wasn't an outstanding tribute, but it was still nice to see this kind of programming on broadcast TV.

Looking over the titles in our DVD collection, I've found that the only Tracy film we own a copy of is MMMMW, which I dislike.  Given der Brucer's penchant of late for finding DVDs in the bargain bin, this can only suggest one thing, that Tracy and Hepburn are cherce, not cheap.

We do have Lion in Winter on laserdisc, one of the great films IMO.  Love her, love him, love the score, love the scale of the film.

One on Katharine Hepburn's most famous roles was as Tracy Samantha Lord, in Philadelphia Story.

On the other hand, Spencer Tracy never played a character named Hepburn.  Or Katharine.

Must be over 30 years ago now that I saw Hepburn on stage (in Toronto) in the musical COCO. I have not one single recollection of her perfomance. This either means that it was lost in the cavernous O'Keefe Center, or there was nothing very memorable about it. I certainly remember other performances I saw that long ago -- even before then.

I should add JUDGEMENT AT NUREMBERG to  my Tracy list. BTW - I notice that noone else (I think) has listed CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS. I know it's over the top - but it's FUN.

I also saw Coco at the O'Keefe. Yes - a good 30 years ago (ouch! I had to double check). Cecil Beaton's sets and costumes were the real stars of the show, and Hepburn's "Shit!" drew gasps from the Toronto audience. If you want to hear something scary, go to Amazon/Coco and listen to the sample of "The World Belongs To The Young." Is this the same Alan Jay Lerner who wrote My Fair Lady? And how many syllables does "Youth" have?

Where in tarnation IS everyone?

The little e-mail prob has been fixed, not wholly, but I'll get any e-mails sent to bruce@haineshisway.com.  What happened was that AOL blocked that address because some disgusting peckerhead glommed it and sent spam from it (bruce@haineshisway.com does not exist as an e-mail address - it isn't real - it merely forwards my e-mails to my aol account).  They will be calling AOL to remove the block, but until they do they've set it up to forward to both the AOL account and my adelphia e-mail account.  Interestingly, my hosting company told me that AOL is being sued by two huge hosting companies precisely because of this.  Had AOL bothered to actually LOOK at what was going on they would have seen that no spam could have been coming from bruce@haineshisway.com as it doesn't exist as a real e-mail address - the header information confirms instantly that the spam is coming from elsewhere.

I love this site and have been reading and posting since day one of the original HHW.  But all of a sudden there seems to be an obsession towards getting to the next page and posting page dances.  It's quality that counts, not quantity, and while we still have mainly good quality posts, I often have limited time to check out this site, and I find I have to go through more and more posts whose only purpose is to get the page count up or celebrate the latest new page.  This used to be cute, but it is now starting to get annoying.  Of course I am probably in the minority, but I wanted to get it off my chest.  A little goes a long way.

I spent a great part of the afternoon watching the FRIENDS interviews from last night's DATELINE. Nice show, nice clips and outtakes, but really, two hours of prime time? What I read in TV GUIDE/ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY from the six stars made much more interesting reading than that show made for interesting viewing.

That said, I'm looking forward to the two hours tonight with an hour of clips and the one hour final show. I know now that tears will be shed at my house.

I like the page dances, and don't really mind one-liners moving us on to the next page (since they are usually very short to read).  But I do understand why this stuff might bother some people.

Maybe we can do a bit of both.  Post some dances, but just be conscious not to overdo it.

I haven't checked this out, but a friend of mine said that the CD release of Coco is actually different than the original vinyl album...that at least one song is much longer on the album.  Does anyone know if this is true?  I have both, but I've never listened to the album.

There's a joke that's older than dirt that goes something like this:

The zoologist was seeking subjects for a top secret--and highly unusual--experiment and was interviewing one such candidate.  The candidate seemed to pass muster, so the zoologist finally revealed the nature of the experiment and got down to business by asking, "Would you be willing to have sex with an ape for $200."  The candidate thought for a moment and replied, "I guess that would be OK, but it might take me a few days to come up with the money."

The VARIETY review for PRYMATE was certainly terrible. I didn't bother to read any others. Looks like the fellow I'm coming to NYC with will be looking for another show to see at the Saturday matinee. He had wanted to see PRYMATE, but looks like it won't run into July with those reviews. WEL - I understand what you're saying, but to present another viewpoint... There's far too little levity and silliness in the world today.  We deal with so much serious, heavy, major stuff all the time in our daily lives - it can really get relentless. So sometimes it's fun to take a break from all that and just be silly. I don't think that's at the expense of discussing more meaningful issues here. I do believe there's room for both on HHW. If it's not your thing - and it certainly isn't everybody's cup of tea -  it only takes a moment to go by the page dances or the page counts.

Well, I am having a Kritzerful week.  I finished "Kritzer Time" today (during chemistry), and I was crying hysterically (during chemistry).  What a perfect way to end a beautiful, sweet, wonderful series.  I can't believe that there are no new adventures of Benjamin Kritzer for me to read about!

My English teacher has joined in my crusade to make "Benjamin Kritzer" a part of the curriculum, and it will most likely be taught in seventh grade classes next year.  She started the first book last night, and the first thing that she said to me when I entered class today was "I used to role down the stairs at the movie theatre!  In fact, 'The Fly' scared me so much that I ran out of the theatre and spent the next two hours rolling down the stairs!  I'm Benjamin Kritzer!".   :)  You have another fan, Bruce!

I need some advice, dear readers.  As I've mentioned, I'm directing scenes from "Assassins" at school.  I just called a theatrical firearms rental company and they have a replica of Oswald's weapon (it doesn't fire, which is good because that's the only sort of weapon that would be allowed in my thoroughly "ghetto" school) for $65, which is great, but in order to rent it, I would have to lay out $400 which would be returned when I return the rifle.  Well, I don't have $400 even if it would be returned to me!  So unless Kennedy was shot with a seventeenth century musket, I'm back to the drawing board.  Does anybody have any suggestions?

Despite "Prymate"'s awful reviews, I'm looking forward to seeing it.  It sounds...interesting.
Title: Re:WHERE DID THE TIME GO?
Post by: Panni on May 06, 2004, 02:41:26 PM
Jenny,
How many people actually know what Oswald's rifle looked like? For most civilians (aka audience) a rifle is a rifle. Why not just use any decent-looking toy rifle purchased in the toy dept of K-mart or some such store? As we used to say in the days when i was doing shows on a very low budget at the CBC  - If they're looking that closely at the props, we've screwed up anyway.

In 1994, while I was working on Judy Kuhn's recording for Dear Friend BK, I became friendly with her musical director/arranger Michael Skloff, who was a peasure to work with and an occasional ride to and from the sessions.  Michael's wife had just had a tv series fold, and Michael told me she had big hopes for her and her partner's new series, a show called "Friends."

Jennifer, I saw Prymate at one of the first preview performances and the scene was there. According to all the reviews I read today, everything from the New York Times to Variety to Broadway.com, the scene is still in the show.

I could be wrong but I think the show will stay open through the weekend until the Tony nominations are announced on Monday morning. It will probably then announce the closing date. They were playing to practically empty houses anyway and after these reviews I doubt they could stay open for any period of time unless people want to see what all the fuss was about. Didn't work for Moose Murders though.

By the way, it's certainly not the worst play I've seen in 30 odd years of seeing live theatre (Howard Kissel's comment on the play). I can think of others that could wear the mantle.

Hello, Kimlets and Hainsies of the World!

Hmmm, I haven't seen enough movies with Tracy and/or Hepburn to have a decent personal selection --- shame on me, I know -- but, and that should amuse DR Elmore, I saw Guess Who's.... on its inital release here and I just fell in love with the movie....

I remember leaving the theater and saying to myself, "If one day I make films, I want to make films like this one!". As an excuse, I should say that I was 18 then....
I thought that Kate's niece looked rather nice and that song at the end still is one of my favorite ditties!

"You've Got to Give A Little,
Take a Little..."

Anyway.... it's going to be pretty old hat to most of you, but i saw a movie yesterday that is just being released here in France and I found totally entertaining, fun, witty, smart, moving, --- well, you get the hint! --- and I'm talking about:

MAMBO ITALIANO.

What a treat!
I don't watch TV so seing Paul Sorvino after so many years was a thrill; I know Ginette Reno as a singer -- a modern day Piaf in my book -- but I ignored she can be such a darn good actress...
Yes, I had a swell time... and I can only say; go and see this movie!
Who am I? Bruce Kimmel, all a sudden?

I've read most of the posts of the days I was not "here" and I want to quote DR PennyO:
"I guess I would change nothing about my current life. Except I would listen more carefully and talk less!"
I thought that was so sweet! Really!

"You've got to give a little, take a little
And let your poor heart break a little
That's the story of,
That's the glory of love"

Sorry for the mush! :-\

To be honest, I've only watched the show for the last four years or so, so I'm not all that invested in it.  But I am interested in the last episode...which, by the way, will be released on deeveedee next Tuesday.  Really.  A few of these discs "fell off the truck", so to speak, and are already in the hands of diehard Friends junkies.

I'm more interested in the series finale of Frasier, myself.  I've always liked the show, but here's how frickin' clueless I am...I had no idea it was a Cheers spin-off until someone told me.  I've still never seen an episode of it.

Julia Jordan, librettist, and Laurence O'Keefe, lyricist, are winners of this year's Kleban Award.  They've collaborated with each other (on The Mice - the first part of a never-made-it-to-New-York show, 3hree).  I think they're worthy choices and my hat is off to both of them.
Uh, you may have a detail wrong here, Noel.  According to the 3hree CD, Jordan indeed wrote the libretto (which is quite good), but O'Keefe wrote the music, not lyrics.

Personally, I found the entire evening to be quite enjoyable, but in combination with Prymate this again underscores my question: Why does everything have to go to Broadway?  Clearly, Prymate was not good material, and the investment would have been better made with another show.

On the other hand, having seen 3hree, I can understand it not being considered "good enough" for Broadway, as it is not the kind of show that hits an audience over the head in any way.  But it should have been given a chance off-Broadway.  The only reason I can think of where it was not given that chance was because Hal Prince was connected with the show.

(Noel: If you happen to know either O'Keefe or Jordan personally, let them know that I found their work very enjoyable.  The scene where Virga frees the mice was particularly well-written, lovingly layered.)

Evening all!

Guess I missed Bruce on the radio, huh?  I'm sorry.  I wish I could have heard that interview!  Will it be repeated?

I'm still fusing with my PDA, trying to get it to connect to the internet.  I'm so ticked because there just has to be a way but I'm not smart enough to figure it out.

I think Little Women is my very favorite film.  I know there are others but strap me if I can think of any right now.

Jose, I am so glad your getting better.   :)

Who mentioned grits again?  Who was it that had never had them?  I don't mind them.  They are not a favorite of mine but I will eat them with sugar and milk.  I know others like them with butter.

I have never watched an episode of Friends.

I never watched an episode of Seinfeld.

I have never watched an episode of Survivor.

I do not feel that I am incomplete because of not having watched Friends or Seinfeld or Survivor.

PPPBBBBBBTTTTTTTT!

And that, as they say, is the state of the art.

(Thank-you, Mr. Sondheim.)

T'was I, DR Danise!  T'was I who had never had them, and made them, and found them good.  Der Brucer was very happy that I made them, too, enjoying their light corn flavor.  We had them with pepper and butter, and I believe that I would enjoy them with grated cheese blended in, as well.

I can see them working well as a breakfast food, with sugar and milk.  Interesting, how the same food can make a good breakfast cereal and a dinner side dish.  I don't know of any other dish that can do this!

New internet scam I just heard about on the news... Legitimate looking doc from Wells Fargo or other institution saying that because of some computer glitch they have lost all your files and ask you to fill out a form supplying info.
Apparently, people actually fall for this.

Thanks, JR. I'll be fine. (But the smilie was disgustingly cute.)
My life has been somewhat stressful lately, so I think the tummy is more sensitive than usual. Actually, it's always pretty sensitive  - but more so now. (When I was a kid, my mother and I were caught at the Hungarian-Austrian border by the Russkies and thrown into this little country jail in the middle of the night. My reaction to this turn of events was to puke all over the cell. Which eventually got us into a hospital from which we conveniently disappeared. So puking can come in handy sometimes.)
Sorry for the digression.... Anyway, I'm going to take a nice evening walk which should be very therapeutic.

Panni, I’m glad puking was a good thing for once.  Once again thank you for sharing one of your stories.

Bruce congratulations!

We watch Friends, but it is time for the show to end.  I taped the last episode and if I can’t watch it tonight, what do you think the odds are of my waiting until we return from LA without hearing how it ends?

I still haven’t packed.

Goodnight.

No real surprises on FRIENDS - and a bit stretched out to fill some time so they could sell LOTS of advertising....but nothing out of character...and a nice way to leave the air.  All shows should have such luck.

The clips show was much more enjoyable than I thought it would be.

Instead of Friends, we watched a beautiful pitchers' battle between the Mets (Leiter) and Giants (Schmidt).  Bonds came up with men on base more than once and did no damage.  And talk about sweet strokes: Piazza, with two outs in the bottom of the eleventh, hit one just above Bonds' glove and over the fence.

I truly enjoyed the FRIENDS finale. I laughed, I cried; exactly what I expect to do when I see a really good episode of the show. I was not disappointed. It was a lovely, wistful finale.

I know they filmed a pilot episode for JOEY last weekend, and on the basis of a couple of tiny clips featured at some point either tonight or last night, I was not encouraged. I love the Joey character, and I hope this spinoff won't ruin my love for that character.

Good Evening!

Good matinee today.  Our Abel was out this afternoon, so there was some shuffling in the cast, but everyone did a great job - and it was kind of nice/interesting hearing certain musical lines sung by different voices.

After the matinee, the big question was, "Where to eat?"  I kept debating between a great Chinese place in nearby Chinatown, or a great Middle Eastern mezze place.  I opted for mezze.  So I walked up to Zaytinya, got a seat outside - it was great sitting out in the sun - and supped to my heart's - and my stomach's - content.  What wonderful food!

Since it was mezze, I just ordered a couple of "small plates" as my meal.  Some exquisitely light and flavorful taramasolata (a Greek dip made of fish roe and potatoes), pilde (a sort of "pizza" with haloumi cheese and turkish tomato sauce), and a amazing dish of braised lamb over a "fluff" of pureed eggplant.  YUM!!  Oh, and, of course, the meal comes with these great little "footballs" of warm pita bread which come right from their oven.  Truly one of my favorite meals of all time.  I've eaten here before - and I think I said that the last time too.

Oh, and then came dessert!!  They call it "Turkish Coffee Chocolate".  It consisted of a warm chocolate cake flavored with turkish coffee, surrounded by cardamom-laced whipped cream, drizzled with a reduction of pomegranate and date molasses, and finished off with a few pieces of candied orange peel and sesame seeds.  I wanted to lick the bowl!!!!  It was rich, but not too rich, and just the perfect portion size so that it didn't make me feel overstuffed - especially after the three dishes and bread I had for my "entree".

So...

After that wonderful meal, I walked around downtown DC for a while.  I almost bought some clothes at Banana Republic - instead, I just scouted out some items to keep an eye out for at the end of the season.  -I really BR's black shirts - great for pit wear.  Then I bought some Powerball tickets - Keep your fingers crossed!  205 Million!!!  And then I came across a police barricade...

It may have made the news in your town, but there was another anthrax scare in DC today.  Thankfully, it was just a scare, and the letter and the suspicious white powder was just a really bad "prank", but it was a little disconcerting knowing that it was happening just a block away from the theatre.  Ah, well... today's world... what can you do?... VOTE!!!

But I digress...

Then came a nice nap.  Which was a little hard to do since they started digging out the holes for the new support beams for the new building going up next to the theatre.  Just imagine a hammer pounding on a metal pipe and magnify that sound by about 1000 decibels!  It was quite loud.  However, I did manage to get a few much needed winks, and I was nicely refreshed for the evening show.  And, again, a good show tonight.  -And the pit dancing is coming along nicely.  ;)

And now I'm back at my apartment...

I did not watch the "Friends" finale... and I may end up buying it on DVD next Tuesday.  I haven't seen any of the shows this past season (since I've been playing shows), so...  but it would be nice to see it.  Maybe someone in the show taped it tonight.  I dunno...  But I'm watching Jay Leno's special show tonight with the cast, so...  I guess that counts for something.

DR Danise - Your PDA will only connect to the net if it actually has a wireless card built into it, or if it has a built in cell phone.  So...  Some PDAs come with the software to do so, but you may need an additional piece of hardware - usually a card your slide into some slot - to actually connect to the net.

RE: COCO - As I've mentioned before, when I was doing Sweeney Todd, Christine Baranski mentioned that she was interested in the piece.  And I think she had even talked to Andre Previn about it.  I think she'd be wonderful!

RE:  Page Posts and Page Dances - Yes, even I sometimes do page posts and page dances; and even I get a little "annoyed" sometimes, but that's what the "Page Down" button is for on your computer.  At least on here, it's all in fun.  And that's what to keep in mind.

OK - I need to catch up some other stuff, but I'll check back in before heading to bed.

Bonne nuit.
Guten Nacht.

I have to wuss like a burger tonight, alas.  There's too much to do tomorrow, and I'm three hours ahead of the BK coast.

But I was served an interesting "martini" tonight.  Mango-flavored rum, pomegranite juice, a splash of pineapple juice, garnished with a lime slice.  A luscious red in color, and tasty.

Yes, I know, martinis don't have rum, but in this case I don't care, I liked it.

That's for anyone out there who likes the occasional not-a-real-martini-but-who-cares.
