Well, you've read the notes, the notes were mostly written from home sweet home, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home sweet home.

Barnum, did you see this news story about an Indian actor who has been disowned by his family for playing Gay in Dunno Y ... Na Jaane Kyun?

It's a short article but you might know the actor. There is a picture in the article as well.

Thanks for the offer Larry. If I had known I wanted it and knew you had a copy I would have asked but I never think of it until I hear a clip (they play it often on many of my BBC radio shows).

Now I have 3 Judi Dench musicals. Cabaret, The Good Companions and Night Music (thanks to a certain someone here on the site).

Good morning, all!

I just had a shock: James Stovall, one of the cast of FINIAN'S RAINBOW, has died. He was a wonderful man, and his death saddens me. I'm grateful to Sara Jean Ford for letting me know.

I have to run down to Toyland this morning, look for some documents and get to the post office. I may stop in to the NYPL on my way back. Hopefully, it will not be an eventful day.

I've been out of town for long periods on several jobs, usually between 4-6 weeks, in such exotic locations as East Haddam, CT (Goodspeed), Troy, NY (NY State Theatre Institute), and London (June and September, 2001, recording).

About five years ago, I took a prolonged summer vacation (mostly because I was pretty much pissed off with my place of work at the time.)  I spent a week at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck NY, a week in NYC (seeing several shows), followed by a week at the shore.  It was an incredibly relaxinig experience.

Here's a great clip from the original "Follies" of "You're Gonna Love Tomorrow" and "Love Will See Us Through":

Wonderful to see the original staging. To me, the number now feels even more of a tribute to Irving Berlin than ever before.

"Good Companions" is one of all-time faves. And her Elizabeth Trent is wonderful. The way she sings "Always Darkest Just Before the Dawn" is great. Johnny Mercer at his best. And I think Andre Previn at his best, too.

I wonder how she would be as Mrs. Lovitt or as Dolly Levi?

I'm up, I've announced.  Facebook was very difficult - every time I typed the blurb and did the web address for Kritzerland, it wasn't current so I couldn't include the Sadismo cover - very annoying.  It shows up fine on the site and I've never had this problem before and I don't know what to do about it - I may redo it later and see if I can get the proper cover up.

On Saturday, I met two of my fellow Streisand fan(atic) friends in Garrison, NY, where some of Hello, Dolly! was filmed.  "Vandergelder's Store" is still on the windows of the building featured in the movie.

My friends had been to Schenectady and other locations where The Way We Were was filmed.  They were excited that they found the location where a library scene was filmed.  (They're hard-core fans!)

Yesterday was Broadway Flea Market day!  I look forward to it every year!  I had my picture taken with Lorna Luft in the photo booth (it costs $10-the proceeds go to BroadwayCares/Equity Fights Aids).  She was very pleasant and even asked the photographer to take another photo because she thought she had blinked.

They had some good deals on CD's.  I got Kelli O'Hara's and another one of Christmas songs sung by Broadway casts.

I also went to the Autograph Table and got signatures of Phyllis Newman, Kathleen Chalfant, Mario Cantone, Julie Murney, Donna Murphy, and the aforementioned Kelli O'Hara.   She autographed two prints of a photo of my friend and I.   I met him in NYC in Feb. 2009.   We went to see South Pacific on the day he arrived.  We both thought it was brilliant and even tried to get tickets to see it a few days later, but it was sold out.

I kind of want to see Pee Wee Herman on Broadway but only if I can get a TDF ticket. I am not paying $67.50 to sit in the rafters of the new Stephen Sondheim Theatre to see the show. I'll pay TDF prices to sit there but not full price ($67.50 is the cheapest ticket). Same goes for Spiderman. The Foxwoods/Hilton/Ford Center for the Performing Arts is a HUGE barn and sitting in the last row in a theatre filled with girders and spider webs and other sight blocking material is not worth $67.50.

As for the Topic of the Day...

Well...

For most of my 20s and early 30s, I was basically "on the road", or at least "away from home".

I think the longest (continuous) tour I was on was Anything Goes: 3 months.  The second national company of Mamma Mia! provided me with various weeks here and there for about three years.

I've had multi-month gigs in Norfolk, VA; Ft. Myers, FL; Nappannee, IN; Chicago, IL; Evansville/New Harmony, IN; Charleston, SC; Williamstown, MA; and, of course, Los Angeles, CA, for What If?! :)

And then there was the four-five year period when I was working in both Richmond, VA and Washington, DC, and I was living part-time in both cities.  Two residences and two P.O. Boxes. One of these days, I'm going to have to sit down, go through my records and programs and figure out exactly how I managed that.

LOL - you just have to read ahead with those 2's and 3's groupings.  It helps if the singer knows the song well also.  And at an audition there is a 50/50 chance.  Kinda like a JRB song also!

Barnum, did you see this news story about an Indian actor who has been disowned by his family for playing Gay in Dunno Y ... Na Jaane Kyun?

It's a short article but you might know the actor. There is a picture in the article as well.

Actor Disowned (http://www.advocate.com/News/Daily_News/2010/09/26/Actor_Disowned_for_Gay_Role/)

The film I have heard about (although, despite what the reporter reports, it is not the first Bollywood film to deal seriously with a gay male subject line). This actor I had heard of only in conjunction with this movie. He is a model turned actor and I think this is his second film.

One wonders if this is a true situation (which would be very sad) or the brain child of the publicity department.

And thank you for posting  it, I had almost forgotten that it would be releasing soon.

Well, 50% of the singers don't even realize it's in 5/8.  The other 50% know that it's in 5/8, but don't sing it in 5/8.

TOD:

Hmmmm.  Well, "away from home", in my Navy career, is sort of a misnomer.  My parents sure thought of me as "away from home", but the only times I actually felt "away from home" were my years on the two aircraft carriers.

To that end, I'll say I considered our homeports as "home".  The cruises we took in the Western Pacific (WestPacs) were "away from home" experiences.

The longest was my first:  I was on USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70), and my first WestPac cruise was 7 1/2 months.  It was sheer torture.  We hit some terrific ports along the way and back again....Hong Kong, Singapore, Perth in Western Australia and, ultimately, Pearl Harbor (where I disembarked on leave and let the ship sail back to Alameda CA without me.  I got myself a nice hotel room in Waikiki and embraced the trade winds (so to speak).

My mom would say that my longest "away from home" period was my 5-year tour in Italy, 1987-1992.  Of course, I've been "away from home" since my retirement in December 1993 -- I've been here in Oakland, but it's "home away from home" and I've been here nearly 17 years (it will be 17 on Dec. 31, 2010).

TOD - While this doesn't come close to some others' experiences, for homebodies like our family it was a biggie.  In the summer of 1996, when DS Rob was almost 11, we took a three and a half week driving vacation to the west coast and back.  We made a big loop, taking the northern route out and a more southerly route back.  On the way out we drove across South Dakota and northern Wyoming, down through Utah to Las Vegas and on to LA.  On the way back, we stopped in Phoenix, picked up my mother and came home through New Mexico, the Texas panhandle, Oklahoma, and Missouri.  Highlights of the trip included:

Badlands NP/Black Hills/Mt. Rushmore
Devil's Tower
Yellowstone NP
Grand Teton NP
Las Vegas
LA - Disneyland and Universal Studios
Painted Desert/Petrified Forest NP
Santa Fe

We saw many wonderful sights on this "See the USA" tour.  Three years later we did "See the USA 2," a slightly shorter trip east and, in 2001, we took our "Colorado, Rocky Mountain High" vacation, which was just over 2 weeks.  These driving vacations are among our most cherished family memories

I found the document and copied it, I then sent a priority mail envelope from the 68th Street post office, and then I had to run an errand for Zak Stains before I dropped off some musc for the recording to him. After that, I stopped in Westsider Books and purchased two used vocal scores. I stepped out into a downpour, caught a taxi, and I am home. Hopefully, I am not going out again today!

Good morning, all!

I just had a shock: James Stovall, one of the cast of FINIAN'S RAINBOW, has died. He was a wonderful man, and his death saddens me. I'm grateful to Sara Jean Ford for letting me know.

Larry, I'm so sorry to hear about this.  My condolences. :'(
I've been checking all the sites today and I finally found this:
http://www.broadway.com/buzz/153691/broadway-musical-vet-james-stovall-dies-on-september-26/

He was such a nice, gentle soul, and he seemed always in a good mood and happy to be working. It's very sad

I'm back from Chicago.

Had a great time.

Sold a lot of books and made some new friends.  (I sat next to Ruth Buzzi, and she is a hoot.)

Film is being developed. Will post some photos later.

Hello, everyone.

It's been a crazy morning. There was a tap on my front door early today; it was the plumber telling me that he would be turning the water off. He was kind enough to give me 15 minutes to take a quick shower and stow some drinking water. Then my accountant kept calling about the numbers I gave him. They were not at all like the numbers I usually give him. Well, no; I was a gypsy last year.

Did I mention that it's hot today?? Oy!

TOD:

I spent 5 weeks in Europe during my college years. I did a lot of business travel at one time, but most trips were relatively short, thankfully. As most business travelers say, it's not as glamorous as it seems. I spent a couple weeks in England on one business trip. That was definitely one of the better ones!

TOD:  Well, like Ginny, we have taken our kids on several rather lengthy car adventures, including two this year alone.  But the longest period *I* was away from home was between my Junior and Senior year of high school, when I spent 3 months in Europe.  My sister was running a Service Club at an Army base in Germany, and I used her home as my "anchor."  I had a Eurrail pass and spent the summer going all over the continent.  It was very scary for me at the beginning, but I'm sure it helped me mature--at least a little.  :)

Here's a question for our experts: My singer was asking if we should do Getting Married Today in her act - I'm not keen on it, really.  But - has anyone done this song doing BOTH parts of it themselves, i.e. the fast part AND the "Today is for Amy - Bless This House" part?  That idea came to me yesterday and I think it could be very funny.

Just wonderin':  has this song ever been done with three women?

I have to run down to Toyland this morning, look for some documents and get to the post office. I may stop in to the NYPL on my way back. Hopefully, it will not be an eventful day.

I've been out of town for long periods on several jobs, usually between 4-6 weeks, in such exotic locations as East Haddam, CT (Goodspeed), Troy, NY (NY State Theatre Institute), and London (June and September, 2001, recording).

I am sorry to read about the passing of James Stovall, elmore.  My sympathies to you.

TOD, when I was a kid I used to go to summer camp for a month.  I'd go home maybe one weekend out of that time.  Since then, I went on a trip to Alaska with my parents after my first year in law school that lasted....about 3 weeks, maybe longer.  We drove to Prince Rupert Canada and took the ferry to Ketchican Alaska, then did a cruise through the inside passage and drove back home via Edmonton and down.

I enjoyed both MEDIUM and THE MENTALIST. I won't say they were my favorite episodes. But I liked them both a lot.

I am so excited. We are getting season 5 of THE CLOSER in a few weeks!

And as for last night's season premiered of "The Amazing Race"... WOW!

That was a great first segment, challenge.  It initially seemed simple to get from Point A to Point B, and then from Point B to Point C, but... I think each team had some sort of "hiccup" along the way.

I'm just wondering if the first team eliminated actually completed the last task.

I can't quite figure out this family. The mom is tame and friendly, but the kittens hiss and spit. Maybe she was a tame cat that had kittens in someone's yard? And the kittens didn't have much human exposure? I don't know. They are tiny, but they spit! Especially the little gray tortie and the orange one with white paws.

Topic of the Day:  does going away to college count?  If it does, then three school years (but home for summers) at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington.  Otherwise, I went on a seven-day vacation to NYC in 1995 with a local theater group and a nine-day vacation with my sister and niece to London in December 2001.  In 1994 or so, my sister, my niece, a friend of my niece's and I all drove down to California to visit our aunt, the nun.  We were there for a couple of days short of two weeks, I think.  We went to Disneyland but not Knott's Berry Farm.  California Adventures didn't exist, yet.

Back from a meal/meeting with the singer.  We're both having a lot of fun as we discover what the act will actually be.

Prior to that we had a wonderful rehearsal - this show is going to be really fun - what a group!  Damon Kirsche continues to be able to go from character comedy songs to beautiful leading man ballads with incredible ease.  Alet is a miracle.  Jackie Seiden, who is the complete newcomer this time around, is absolutely fantastic.  Susanne Blakeslee is wonderful - funny as all get out, and she gets to do two songs that aren't funny at all.  Andy Taylor has a wonderful voice and impeccable comedy timing - and Richard Berent is the ideal accompanist for this particular show.  Our four ensemble gals, Shannon Cudd, Lily Kershaw, Tyler Olshansky and Ashley Palmer are adorable and excellent.  And the material plays great.  We made a few adjustments in the arrangements, as what worked on the album doesn't necessarily work for the live show.  All in all - grand fun.
