Title: THE WEKKEND REPORT
Post by: bk on May 07, 2004, 12:01:26 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you know what the wekkend will be bringing, you know the topic, so let's put on our seven league boots and do some postin', shall we?

I remember seeing DON'T BOTHER TO KNOCK on TV in Canada years ago. Really liked it. I agree that MM was very good. It didn't seem like a performance -- I was almost uncomfortable watching her. (This is a compliment.)

SOME LIKE IT HOT is one of my favorite MM performances. She's gorgeous and sweetly vulnerable and so funny.
More tomorrow - today really. G'night.
(Interesting factoid: Across the street from me is the house where MM and Joe DiMaggio lived when they first got married.)

Good morning, all!  I enjoyed the FRIENDS finale, and the clips show before it was fun to watch, sort of like going through an old photo album. And so much for that.  Let's get to TOD:

SOME LIKE IT HOT
ALL ABOUT EVE
HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE
BUS STOP
SEVEN YEAR ITCH

My favorite Monroe scene is the one in HT MARRY A MILLIONAIRE, when she's looking glamorous in all the mirrors and then walks into the door.

My favorite MM performance is in the technicolored noir film, NIAGRA; which actully makes a great follow-up to DON'T BOTHER TO KNOCK.
No doubt that my favorite MM flick is SOME LIKE IT HOT, her fuzzy end of the lollipop scene gets me everytime.
Ater those:
GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES
THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH
BUS STOP
O. HENRY'S FULL HOUSE (still not out on dvd)
HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE

Has some studio exec been smarter in the 1950's, she could've done a remake of ROXIE HART, and done it very well.

MM does have that delightful "After You Get What You Want" in THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS, and then there's that terrifically over the top "Heat Wave" in the same film.

George Chakiris can be glimpsed in the latter number, but in GENTLEMEN'S "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend," he's much easier to spot.

I love Marilyn's little scene in All About Eve. I also like Niagra and The Misfits and How to Marry a Millionaire.

I'm listening to BBC Radio right now. I may switch over to CDs later. In the VCR is yesterday's episode of Two's Company. I have been waiting patiently for my delivery of Call Me Madam on DVD. According to the e-mail I received it has been shipped and was supposed to be here sometime between April 30 and May 7. I hope that it arrives either this afternoon or Monday morning.

We are doing small projects in the apartment so we are not watching much on TV or DVD or VCR. We are, however, listening to many CDs and burning some of them as well.

Isn't today "what's in your media players day"?  I know that Friday used to be "Talent Roundup Day".

Anyway, I love some of Marilyn's early films when she was Marilyn Monroe and not MARILYN MONROE... things like "Monkey Business" or "O'Henry's Full House".  I don't think Fox knew what to do with her and she would have been better off at MGM.

In case you haven't heard, ASSASSINS is considered a revival for the Tony® Awards.  One of the reasons is that nobody bothered to put in an offical request to consider it as a new musical.  More disturbing is that since BARBARA COOK'S BROADWAY played an "irregular schedule" it is NOT elegible for a Special Event Tony®.

Yes, DON'T BOTHER TO KNOCK is a very good and creepy film. And of course little Donna Corcoran (sister to Noreen) is the poor little tyke who is tormented by Ms. Monroe.

Favorite MMs: SOME LIKE IT HOT and GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES.

Comments on last night's Friend's finale:

Did it go way over on NBC?  Here on Global it went till past 10:05pm.

I liked the finale a lot.  I think they stayed very true to the show.  When Monica and Chandler got two babies ... well it was hilarious.  And of course Ross and Rachel were going to end up together.  While that was predictable, the answering machine part of it was fun and cute.  I was really happy with the ending, although somewhat surprised that they did not bring up Joey moving out to LA.

I watched the FRIENDS finale last night also DR Jennifer. I haven't really watched FRIENDS much in the last few years so I wasn't as invested in the show as some others, but I didn't want to be the only person NOT to see the last episode! LOL!

To add to my MM list (started earlier with SLIH)... THE MISFITS, HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE, THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH, BUS STOP. And I'm going to include THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS - although I haven't seen it in MANY years and might not like it as much now - but I used to like it and like MM in it. I also have a weak spot for THE PRINCE AND THE SHOWGIRL because it's such a strange film and where else can you hear Laurence Olivier attempt to speak Hungarian. She's very beautiful to look at in that film and she tries, she really tries. ....The more I think about it, the more I realize that I like ALL of her films.

Marilyn is glorious in THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS, and I've always found it a validation of her star quality that when she walks into the frame in ALL ABOUT EVE, you're drawn to her despite such towering star presences all around her. Amazing what she did with such a small part. Great writing, of course, and then she gives it all it needs to be unforgettable.

GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES is my favorite performance, but I think all of her performances hold up really well. Never been real big on THE PRINCE AND THE SHOWGIRL, and reading the diary about its making is enough to curl one's otherwise straight hair, but you can't beat her in SOME LIKE IT HOT or THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH or BUS STOP.

PANNI lives in an historical neighborhood!

Happy Birhtday DRDANISE!!!!

I like DON'T BOTHER TO KNOCK  as well....almost a sort of "real time" movie that takes place all on one night.  And Marilyn's performance does come from somewhere in her bleak past.

Favorite Monroe films....hmmmmmm....like them all, but like other DR's:

NIAGARA - "Work on your Maxwell, I'll be back."

HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE - "Is there a Mr. Cadillac?"

BUS STOP - "I told you....it's Sher---eee...Cherry just ain't....dignified!"

THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS - especially the finale when they're all marching in place and Mitzi Gaynor actually believes someone might be looking at her!

RIVER OF NO RETURN - her songs....and her scenes with Tommy Rettig.

Favorite moments.....so many....but if I have to choose:

GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES - when she is handed a tiara and holds it to each breast trying to figure out what it is.  When she tells the old man:  "I'm not marrying him for his money...I'm marrying him for YOUR money."  And then scene with the detective when Marilyn jumps a line and they just go on....  I also like when Jane Russell says:  "Listen between the two of us, if we can't get that man's pants off we're not worthy of the name woman."

The piano bench scene with Tom Ewell in THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH.

I will leave others for other DR's.  Marilyn was special....she connected to the audience, and even at a young age, I wanted to be her friend and help her and spend time with her....she was the real deal!

The FRIENDS finale did not suggest Joey going to LA because creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane were determined that the finale would honor all six characters and not be used as a setup for the spinoff (which they aren't going to be involved with). ANd I think they were dead right to do it.

There is plenty of time for Joey to set up moving to LA once his show begins. We've had 10 years to get to know his life in NYC. His own show can fully well set him off in a new direction with the first episode. (The pilot, by the way, was filmed last weekend, and there have been clips of it turning up on NBC over the last couple of days to whet people's appetites for the show. It will air in the FRIENDS Thursday night timeslot.)

Happy Birthday, DR Danise!!!

I put in the DVD of THE PRISONER OF SECOND AVENUE yesterday, and I really liked how the film looked. One would never know it's over 30 years old except for the mono sound. I remember bk making comments about this some months back, but don't remember exactly what he said. I thought Anne Bancroft was excellent. Jack Lemmon, on the other hand, gave a fussy and irritating performance, and I lost complete sympathy for his character's predicament.

Did anyone see the Broadway version with Peter Falk? I wish he hadn't been occupied with COLUMBO or some other project, because I think the film might have been something special had he done the role in the film.

So true DRJAY.  When I was doing a search for Marilyn Pictures - that one was featured numerous times.

If someone wants to put the 1950's into visual terms, they always include at least one image each of Marilyn, Elvis, and James Dean.

I don't want to put a jinx (how's that for a fine Scrabble word, Dear Readers?) on things, but I do believe prospects have brightened considerably for the Pasadena Playhouse.  Over the last few seasons, one has had to endure an unseemly amount of chaff before arriving at some wheat in the presentations at this historic theatre.  This year, however, it's been three strong plays in a row.  The season opened with a fine Talley's Folly.  That was followed by Claudia Shear in Dirty Blond, which was quite good.

Last night, I was not watching Friends , but rather was in attendance at the Pasadena Playhouse's third play of the year, Enchanted April, a thoroughly charming and very well acted theatrical event.  Miss Mariette Hartley was spot on as the crusty Mrs. Graves, and Miss Nancy Bell was splendid in the central role of Lotty Wilton.  All the other actors were excellent in their parts and the sets and direction (by Michael Wilson, who directed the play on Broadway) were superb.

Next up on the Playhouse's agenda is 110 in the Shade, and I'm hopeful they can go four for four.

Yes MR BK, I also am of the opinion that Miss Anne Bancroft did her own singing in Don't Bother to Knock - all those standards from the FOX catalog....

I can find nothing on the net that says otherwise.

Good morning!

Boy did it take me a while to get out of bed (again) this morning!  My clock-radio went off at 8:45.  I sat in bed listening to the final minutes of NPR's Morning Edition - and, yes, I do miss Bob Edwards already.  :(  Then I looked at the clock again and it was 9:30... Then... Then... -And I had to get up since I had to take my morning dosage of meds.  (Only two more days to go!!!  YEAH!!!!)  Well, 11:00 finally rolled around, and I finally rolled and pushed myself out of bed (hmm, that's quite a visual isn't it?)... And now my day has started.

-Thankfully, there were no adverse affects from my wonderful meal yesterday (did you read the late notes?  ;)).  WHEW!!

-And now they broke into regular programming on TV to show the Senate Hearing with Sec. Donald Rumsfeld...

DR Jed - Well, if it was in the budget we could have flown you in, but, alas... Besides, I don't think you're a member of Actor's Equity.   ;)

Topic of the Day - Again, "Ditto".  I know I've seen a couple of Marilyn Monroe films, but, I can honestly say (and don't hate me for this) I haven't watched a Marilyn Monroe film for the sake of watching Marilyn Monroe.  However, I've always enjoyed "Some Like It Hot" and "Seven Year Itch".

When I was on the Universal Studios Japan casting tour last year, we saw some Marilyn Monroe impersonators.  Well... if you could call them that.  It appeared a lot of them had just watched other Marilyn Monroe impersonators, and based their own "version" on those impressions.  Hmm.. Ah, well...

Happy Birthday, DR Danise!!!

Oh, before heading to bed last night, I decided to page through a new cookbook I bought, "Home Baking" by Jeffrey Alford and Naomi Duguid.  I'm a real fan of their past cookbooks which have covered topics such as flatbreads, rice(!) and "Hot Sour Salty Sweet".  And since both of them are quite accomplished photographers, the visuals in the books are quite stunning.  Not only of the foods, but also of the various people they have photographed in their travels - and they travel a lot!  This new book is truly a travelogue of sorts - and it's also quite heavy - literally - it could be a coffee table tome.  As the title implies it's about home-style baking.  They cover homes from the States, Europe, Asia, Africa, etc...  I'm sure I'll be giving many of the recipes a try sometime soon.

-And for you Canucks, they're from Toronto.

Media Check:

Basically my CD Player... As I mentioned two nights ago, I put in countertenor's David Daniels' CD, "A Quiet Thing".  Hmm...  I still need to give the rest of the disc a listen, but... we'll see...  Oh, and some Bach...

-And, yet, my pile of unplayed DVDs continues to grow and grow... -And "In America" comes out on Tuesday!!

Oh (again) I did get a phone call from my mother this morning.  She was just checking in.  And she also wondered why I hadn't stopped by in a while.  Well, I have stopped by, but since she usually works until 7:00, I can't stay around in the afternoon to wait for her to get home since I have shows in the evening.  I asked about Mother's Day to see if they were doing brunch.  But, as luck would have it, she's working that day at the nursing home, and since I have a matinee, so...  I'll do my best to get out there tomorrow morning.  Hopefully, that will suffice for my Mother's Day visit.  :-\

OK - That's definitely enough babbling for this morning...

Laters...

What a lovely day.

Alas, I'm hunched over the computer, flinging notes on music paper (aided by a Midi and software) as fast I can.  I'm responsible for incidental music for a production of Diary of a Scoundrel and the only musician we can fit into the theatre is a solo violinist.

So, the Media Check includes two CDs I checked out of the library, rather randomly, so I could listen to some violin music.  Unfortunately, I didn't have time to find solo violin music (from tsarist Russia) and I've really no time to listen to these CDs.  Joy, asking to hear some religious music, is responsible for the third CD, Bach's Mass in B-Minor.

DVD probably still has Big Fish.  VCR, well, we wanted to record new episodes of West Wing and Law & Order Wednesday night, but, here during sweeps, the National Broadcast Company can't be bothered to provide us with original programming.  Instead, they took the stingy way out and re-ran clips of some sitcom I never watched.  Our cable bill is $57.91 and that's no HBO or Showtime.  In fact, I can't think of a station we DO get that doesn't have commercials.  So, we're paying for it twice.  I realize many of you love this program, but shame on NBC for not giving us our money's worth.

The extraordinary paint job will be inspected by both my parents in a short span of days.  Last night, Dad stopped by, and was clearly very impressed, if itching to get out the moment he sat down.  Joy invited Mom over for Mother's Day, as this is the first Mother's Day we've been in the same city for since 1978.

Happy Birthday incoming NY visitor Danise

I see from today's NY Times that yet another rendition of Candide--this one at the New York Philharmonic--despite admirable singing, has been undermined by the unfortunate interpolation of broad humor and corny jokes.  Pity.  As if the humor in the music and lyrics of this show cannot stand unsupported.  I know the book to Candide has been doctored and doctored, but perhaps one of these days someone will get it right and create a definitive book once and for all.

Today’s topic of discussion: What are my favorite Marilyn Monroe films and your favorite Monroe moments?  I’m not one to remember moments too well, but my favorite movies are:

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
The Seven Year Itch
Some Like It Hot
There’s No Business Like Show Business

In my CD player:  Anna Karenina:  the Audio Musical with Lorna Dallas as Anna.  I’ve never heard or heard of Lorna Dallas.  Is she good?  I just got this last weekend and haven’t had (taken) time to listen to it.  After that, the Petula Clark/Michael Ball Sunset Blvd. that I taped off of BBC Radio on my computer.

Hopefully this afternoon I’ll be able to record the broadcast of Candide with Kristin Chenoweth and Patti LuPone!  I was able to get the time off from work, it’s just a matter of me not screwing up the recording process.

Just got this request from a friend who does a (more intellectual variety) call-in radio show. This is the perfect place, I do believe, to ask his question...

The first Sunday in June, I'll be doing a show on metaphor (including similes, analogies, etc.) that explores why we use such imagery, how we feel on encountering a particularly apt metaphor, etc.  And for interludes between calls I would like to have a handful of good musical passages (from songs, presumably), that exemplify or otherwise bear upon the theme.  For example, one I already have in mind is Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Waters."  Do you know any other good possibilities?  I would very much appreciate your suggestions.  Thanks

And there are more photos to come. Even Rummy said so. And videos! Horrible.

If there's one thing I abhor, it's hypocrisy.  To wit:

 1. Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you're a
conservative radio host. Then it's an illness and you need our prayers
 for your recovery.

 2. The United States should get out of the United Nations, and our
highest national priority is enforcing U.N. resolutions against Iraq.

 3. Government should relax regulation of Big Business and Big Money
but crack down on individuals who use marijuana to relieve the pain of
 illness.

 4. "Standing Tall for America'" means firing your workers and moving
 their jobs to India.

 5. A woman can't be trusted with decisions about her own body, but
multi-national corporations can make decisions affecting all mankind
 without regulation.

 6. Jesus loves you, and shares your hatred of homosexuals and Hillary
 Clinton.

 7. The best way to improve military morale is to praise the troops in

Thanks

"Send in the Clowns" would be an apt selection, I do believe.

I've never been much of a MM fan.  We never watched any of her movies at my home when I was young, most probably because my mom had little love for suicidal celebrities.  Since I never saw her in films, the only Monroe I grew to know was through her iconography, which was more often than not rife with adulation, demonization, parody and exploitation (just mention her name and the first images that come to mind are from the Tommy movie.)  As I got older and began to explore movies, I would come across her performances (the first being in Some Like It Hot), and I came to appreciate them individually, but I never specifically sought them out.

That being said, I would list the aforementioned Some Like It Hot, All About Eve and Bus Stop as MM movies that I like.

Quote
I think Miss Monroe connected with this role for many reasons, some of which are eerie (you’ll understand once you’ve seen it). I find the “Monroe” act of the films that came just after this a bit tiresome after you’ve seen five or six of the Fox films, but she’s so fresh and real in this picture it just blew me away. Can someone come get me?

It must have blown me away too, BK, because I have been E & T for most of the week.  My apologies to one and all.  Between computer problems and health problems, I have not been online very much either at home or at work.  I will hopefully get caught up, with all of the columns and posts that I have missed, this weekend.

I loved Marilyn Monroe.  It is hard to imagine what she would be like today at the age of 77 (of course, James Dean would be 73).  Favorite MM films are:

SOME LIKE IT HOT
GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES
BUS STOP
RIVER OF NO RETURN

I could never stand THE PRINCE AND THE SHOWGIRL or SEVEN YEAR ITCH, although Marilyn is wonderful in both of them.  THE PRINCE just never seems to go anywhere, and in SEVEN YEAR ITCH, Tom Ewell really creeps me out.  Sorry, personal opinion only.

Just the other day we were talking about walking and cycling through cemeteries.  Welllllllll, whadaya tink about dis:

This Saturday (May 8) there will be a screening of the 1945 movie DETOUR at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery at 6000 Santa Monica Blvd. (just east of Gower).  Tickets are $10 and are available at the gate.  Gates open at 7:00 and the movie starts at 8:30.  Moviegoers are encouraged to bring blankets and a picnic dinner and make an evening of it.  (Just don't bring tall chairs.)  The film will be shown outdoors on the side of a massive white marble mausoleum.  Film stars such as Rudolph Valentino, Douglas Fairbanks (Sr. and Jr.), Peter Lorre, Tyrone Power and Cecil B. DeMille are all interred nearby.  (No, we're not making this up!)  You can get more information about this and other similar cemetery screenings by visiting www.cinespia.org.

DR Panni:

Simile:  "Like a Rock" (another Paul Simon, of course)
"Like a Bird on a Wire" (Leonard Cohen)
"For Good" from Wicked has a couple of strings of similes in this venerable folk tradition.

Metaphor:  "You Are the Wind Beneath My Wings"
"You Are My Sunshine"
"The Girl Who Use to Be Me" has a beautiful metaphor:  "You could read by the light of her eyes."

Pure Fantasy:  "Like a Virgin" as sung by Madonna.

  FYI:

'Friends' Finale Draws 51 Million Viewers (EXCERPTS)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The final "Friends" episode drew 51.1 million viewers as U.S. television's top-rated comedy ended its 10-year NBC run preliminary ratings issued on Friday show.

It was the second-biggest TV audience this year behind the 89.6 million viewers posted by the Feb. 1 Super Bowl telecast, making it the most watched non-sports program since the August 2000 finale of the first "Survivor," which drew 51.7 million.

While at the high end of NBC's expectations, the "Friends" farewell audience on Thursday fell short of the show's all-time high of 52.9 million viewers for the post-Super Bowl telecast of Jan. 28, 1996, NBC said.

The "Friends" finale's audience, 53 percent of all those people watching television from 9 to 10 p.m., also was eclipsed by the 76 million viewers who saw "Seinfeld" depart NBC's airwaves in 1998.

The conclusion to "Friends" capped months of media hype that helped drive advertising rates for the finale to a Super Bowl-sized $2 million for each 30-second spot, the most ever for a sitcom.

The hourlong "Friends" retrospective special that preceded the final episode also drew big numbers, averaging 35.9 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Sadly, no.  I grew up at the Hi-Way Grill, as we lived only one block away from it for the first few years of my life... goodness knows how many cheeseburgers and milkshakes I had there.  It closed probably around 1990.  They moved the building, which now sits off Reecer Creek Road northwest of town, and is being used as a country church now, I believe.  A Jack-in-the-Box now sits at the corner of 8th and Main in its place.

That screen test with Walter Matthau doing the Tom Ewell part in THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH is something to see. It certainly would have been a different movie with him in the lead rather than Ewell. Oh, well, I do like what we ended up with.

It's funny, but when people talk about Billy Wilder movies, that's one that almost never comes up despite the fact that it was a smash hit at the time and one of Monroe's iconic roles.

WFO - You obviously misunderstood my post yesterday.  There is nothing wrong with one new page dance every new page.  However it was getting so that the last four or five posts on a page were just for the purpose of getting to the next page, and once the next page was reached there were two or three page dances.  This was overkill pure and simple.

It was announced today that the Kristin/Patti CANDIDE will be released on CD so that if you miss it on radio tonight you can still get it.  I was not about to pay those inflated price to see it, and now that the reviews have come out I'm glad I didn't bother.  It is apparently full of bad jokes that are not in the script.

I finally got around to LOVE FINDS ANDY HARDY today. Warners didn't find a flaw-free print, alas, and the scratches are most noticeable during Judy's "In Between" number where it's just infuriating.

I've got the film on laserdisc, too, and if I get around to it tonight, I'm going to put it in and see if those same flaws are evident at that part of the laserdisc master.

I have no idea what I'm going to put in tonight to watch.

If an election weren't around the corner, I'd be saying the same thing.  But that, combined with the fact that the pictures which are about to come out (not to mention the videos) are going to be horrific, might mean that Rummy's nose-thumbing days are numbered. Let us hope. (On the other hand, I'm assuming Cheney and the gang aren't going anywhere until November.)

Perhaps because it was an adaptation of a stage property (also starring Mr. Ewell), and not one of his celluloid originals.

Marilyn is glorious in THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS, and I've always found it a validation of her star quality that when she walks into the frame in ALL ABOUT EVE, you're drawn to her despite such towering star presences all around her.

I also believe, aside from the talent(s) and writing involved, you notice MM because everyone else in that scene is in dark formal wear (save Karen's hideous lace concoction) and MM's blond tresses, creamy shoulders and white satin are, in toto, so luminescent, that she literally pops off the screen.

Good Afternoon!

Not a bad afternoon.  I managed to get in a nice Pilates work out - and a good sweat in the process.  Felt so good!  And it also helped to work some more residual cobwebs and other stuff out of my system.  I was feeling pretty good when I got up this morning, and I'm feeling much better now - and that's saying something!  I also managed to make a Whole Foods run, and also treated myself to a Jamba Juice smoothie - more or less my post-workout meal.

And now...

-Oh, I even washed some dishes!  -Very exciting, huh? ;)

Now I must attend to an ever growing pile of newspapers that's been building up on my couch... and my floor... and my desk... -I keep saying I'll catch up on the news... but...  Well, time to get them bagged and down to the recycling bin.  -Oh, and it's about two and a half weeks worth of the Washington Post AND the New York Times, so...

So...

-And I REALLY want that braised lamb I had yesterday for dinner again tonight!!!  Hmm... What time is it?  Hmmm....

Second off...isn't a Wekkend a Wiccan thing?

Third off...my favorite Marilyn Monroe movie is Some Like It Hot!  It also has my favorite Marilyn moment...Tony Curtis, still dressed up as Josephine, interrupts her teary-eyed torch song to give her a very passionate, romantic smoocheroo.  And she's just fine with it.

(Of course, the "nobody's perfect" curtain line is just about the best ending a comedy ever had...!)

Fourth off...it looks like, despite the downright nasty reviews, some friends and I are probably off to Van Helsing tonight.

Speaking of the election, I heard an interesting item on the news this morning.  According to our local CBS affiliate, the latest polls continue to show a drop in W’s approval rating, but strangely enough, the decrease does not seem to have resulted in an increase in Kerry’s popularity.  If anything, the increase seems to have affected Ralph Nader, who is now favored by 7% of the population.

We watched "Star" last night. Yes it is long and you really don't get involved with the characters but there is so much that is good. I have not seen it since it was first released. Did I miss something? What was the point of the "Cotton Club" visit near the end - there is no image to link it ot "Jenny" as a production number. Was I supposed to pick up on a musical cue?

We get to see "Urinetown" today. Hope it is fun. Newbee Beekay sees the OZ production of "The Producers" tonight and will hopefully report back in a few days after his long journey to the outback.

W A R N I N G !

Long post!

Big troubles for Disney in Europe.... Borrowed from jimhillmedia.com.

Part one:

What's next for EuroDisney SCA? A final financial fix or an abrupt bankruptcy?
Guest columnist Andrea Monti is back, continuing his look at what's going on with EuroDisney. With less than four weeks 'til the waivers that DLRP's lenders just gave this troubled resort expire, will Disneyland Paris' beleaguered management team be able to pull another financial rabbit out of their hat? Or is this resort slipping irretrievably into the red?
This is NOT going to be pretty, folks

I mean, heads will roll. Egos will be crushed. Tens of millions of francs will be thrown at this problem. And -- undoubtedly -- someone's interests will be lost. Most likely DLRP's small-time investors, the ones that have the most to lose in this situation. And let's not even talk about what may happen to the resort's hourly cast members. Who will mostly likely bear the brunt of whatever cutbacks come their way.

But make no mistake, people. EuroDisney SCA (the company that actually runs the Disneyland Paris resort) is in BIG trouble right now. It's on the verge of one of those "now or never" situations. Meaning that -- if EuroDisney SCA doesn't get its financial house sorted out soon -- this resort really could close.

I know, I know. There are those of you who will undoubtedly think that I am just doing a "Chicken Little" impression. Who will say that I am just one big coming attraction for Disney Feature Animation's Summer 2005 release by walking around and saying that "The sky is falling! The sky is falling!" I mean, EuroDisney SCA has obviously faced serious financial problems in the past and still managed to survive. So it just stands to reason that the Disneyland Paris Resort will be able to weather this crisis as well. And that Disney's two Parisian theme parks will remain open and continue to entertain visitors for years yet to come.

Well, don't be so sure, folks. You see, the situation that EuroDisney SCA is facing right now is very different from the ones that this corporation has faced in the past. Which is perhaps why Andre La Croix, EuroDisney SCA's CEO, has tried to put the Disneyland Paris resort's financial problems right out in the front window. So that none of the parties involved can possibly ignore the dreadful situation that the company finds itself in right now.

That (to outside observers, anyway) would seem to be the tactic that La Croix has in mind. By making sure that the media is made all too aware of EuroDisney SCA's pressing financial problems, Andre is hoping that all of DLPR's bankers, the Walt Disney Company (which still holds 39% of EuroDisney SCA) as well as Saudi Prince Al Waleed (who reportedly has a 17% stake in the resort) will finally be forced to deal with this situation, find a final solution ... or risk bankruptcy!

"So what are the possible bail-out scenarios?" you ask. Well -- with $2.5 billion in debt, a loss of $110 million during the first quarter of this year as well as a severe liquidity problem -- when the waivers granted by the resort's lenders expire on May 31st, EuroDisney SCA may have no choice but to shut its two theme parks down, close all six of its on-site hotels and send everybody home.

Which -- given that the Disneyland Paris Resort theme parks are experiencing a 6% increase in attendance levels this year, (Due to strong sales of the resort's park hopper tickets, which allow DLRP guests to move freely from one theme park to the other) and that visitor spending remains on good levels -- has got to be kind of maddening for the resort's current management team. Given that the theme parks' performance is improving just as EuroDisney SCA has begun to circle the drain.

Okay. I know. The above paragraph lays things out in rather simplistic terms. And this is obviously not a very simple situation. But -- if one were to just take a cold-blooded look at the numbers -- anybody with a minimum of business sense can see a scenario unfolding where the smartest thing to do might be to allow EuroDisney SCA just to crash and burn. And then -- like a phoenix -- a new management company could then rise up out of the ashes and effectively pick up the pieces. Take over the day-to-day running to DLRP's theme parks, its shopping village, the hotels as well as the resort's extremely lucrative Val d'Europe complex.

For most of the parties involved here, this would be the ideal solution: Giving the Disneyland Paris resort a brand new start. Wipe the slate clean by removing the resort's enormous debt load. Which would then allow the theme parks to start making money almost from Day 1. Not to mention creating a more simple and friendly management structure for the resort than EuroDisney SCA has right now.

What? You haven't heard about EuroDisney SCA's almost Byzantine financial and management structure? Sometime try to get ahold of one of the corporation's annual reports (or -- better yet -- download the pdf version from the eurodisney.com website). Then take a look at that diagram which shows the incredibly intricate financial and management structure that Gary Wilson (who was CFO -- Chief Financial Officer -- of the Walt Disney company -- when the deal to build and fund EuroDisney was originally put together) set up. Wilson deliberately structured this deal so that -- even though the Mouse had a minority stake in this European project -- it still had a major say in how things were run at the resort. (I swear -- if you stare long enough at this financial diagram -- eventually you'll find Waldo. Anyway ...)

And let's not forget about all those royalty payments that EuroDisney SCA was supposed to be sending back to its mother company for licensing fees. Not to mention the enormous amounts that the Imagineers charged EuroDisney SCA during the project's pre-opening design and construction phase.

Now Wilson conceived EuroDisney's finacial plan in a way that was quite common for American corporations in the mid and late 80's. Which might have proved to be very lucrative for the Walt Disney Company and the project's investors if the world hadn't suddenly been plunged into that enormous recession in the early 1990s. Which resulted in DLRP guests not following the spending patterns that Disney had initially hoped for (which was to have visitors come spend several days at EuroDisney and stay in one of the resort's six hotels), but -- rather -- to have people take the train out to EuroDisneyland in the morning, tour the park, then head back to their lower-priced hotel room in Paris that night.

Given that most JHM readers are no doubt aware of how rough the EuroDisney resort had it during the project's first year of operation, I won't rehash that story here ... Other than to say that once the "French regime" (I.E. Philippe Bourguignon, the second president of the company as well as his successor, Gilles Pellisson) took over the day-to-day running of the resort, the theme park seemed to stabilize and slowly come out of its death spiral.

Title: Re:THE WEKKEND REPORT
Post by: François de Paris on May 07, 2004, 03:02:41 PM
Part Two:

The only problem was ... These fixes that were put into place (EX: delaying royalty payments) were just temporary. And that -- due to the resort's crushing debt load -- EuroDisney SCA was never really able to turn a profit. Just keep DLRP's losses to the minimum.

Of course, hopes were high that -- once the Walt Disney Studios (the movie-themed theme park that was originally supposed to have opened right next door to Disneyland Paris in the mid-1990s, but kept getting pushed back and scaled down to make the project more affordable) was open -- that the resort's awful financial situation would finally turn around.

But -- instead of finally creating a reason for DLRP visitors to stay overnight in one of the resort's six hotels -- what the Walt Disney Studios did (And let's be honest here, folks. This small movie-themed theme park is arguably is the least attractive as well as the worst received park in Disney history. And -- yes -- I'm taking DCA into consideration when I make that statement) was cannibalize attendance from the Disneyland Paris park next door.

Don't believe me? Then let's look at the combined attendance for both of these theme parks for 2003, which was 12.5 million guests. Which seems sort of snazzy, until you realize that the Disneyland Paris resort had 12.7 million visitors back in 2001. And that was back when DLRP only had one theme park!

So -- as you can see -- the situation that La Croix and Co. are now facing is an extremely complicated one. One where it would seem that there are no simple solutions. So -- taking all that into consideration -- can you now understand why the idea of just wiping the slate clean (I.E. having EuroDisney SCA admit defeat and declare bankruptcy) has such strong appeal?

So what's stopping EuroDisney SCA from putting a reorganization plan like this into play? Obviously the fact that most of the company's investors would -- under a plan like this -- lose most, if not all, of their investment. Not to mention all of the negative publicity that the Disneyland Paris resort would receive as a result of even attempting a maneuver like this ... Well, that's got to be giving Andre some pause. Making him think twice before hitting that "reset" button.

Of course, there's the remote possibility that Michael Eisner that -- rather than having the Walt Disney Company associated with what could be a record-breaking bankruptcy -- might finally open the Mouse's purse strings and pour the hundreds of millions of francs necessary into a revival project for this resort. Of course, given that Roy Disney and Stanley Gold are still out there circling, determined to make the most of Michael's every mis-step ... It's not too hard to believe that the "Save Disney" people would try to spin any DLRP rescue efforts as throwing good money after bad.

And let's not forget about EuroDisney SCA's bankers. Who really find themselves torn in this situation. Because (obviously) of the huge debt that they're owed (money that few of these financial institutions now believe that they ever have a hope of recovering) as well as all the money that Disneyland Paris and Walt Disney Studios still generate every day.

And then you have the two wild cards in the bunch. The two gentlemen who -- to date -- have had the least to say publicly but privately must be forming their own resort rescue plans: Jay Rasulo -- EuroDisney SCA's former head honcho, now president of the entire Disney theme park empire -- and Andre La Croix -- the new president of EuroDisney SCA, a guy who's got a real gift when it comes to marketing DLRP as well as reaching out to the media. Obviously these two guys have a real interest in pulling this troubled resort back from the brink.

Of course, following in the great Disney tradition, maybe someday soon Disneyland Paris' prince will come. Prince Al Waleed, to be exact. Perhaps Rasulo and La Croix can persuade the Saudi billionaire to make yet another investment in DLRP. This time around, though, Jay and Andre may find that Al may not be such an easy sell. Given that the Prince has been quoted in the press as saying that "... this time, we need to fix this problem once and for all."

Okay. I know. This is already a very convoluted story. (And I haven't even mentioned all of the rumours that have been flying around about what French President Jacque Chirac might be willing to do for his good, close, personal friend, Michael Eisner.)

But this is -- you have to admit -- a distinctly Disney story. I mean, think about it, folks. You've got a prince, a magic kingdom in serious peril, a situation that only a major miracle will be able to resolve. It's going to be really interesting to see if EuroDisney SCA is actually able to pull off its very own happy ending.

In the meantime, I'll be keeping a close eye on this whole situation for JimHillMedia.com as this story continues to develop.

That's it for now, folks. TTFN!

Okay, someone needs to explain this to me: Last night before going to bed I was watching this perfectly horrid little TV movie on Fox Movie Classics - Love and Betrayal: The Mia Farrow Story.  What is this film based on?  If it's based on a biography rather than Mia's book, HOW DO THEY GET AWAY WITH THIS TRIPE?  I've watched TV films with bad bad writing (The Natalie Wood Story comes to mind) but this is so tawdry and stupid and poorly written and how did Woody OR Mia stand for it.  Even if it's based on her book how did she stand for it?  This was made in 1995.

Okay, it's based on two, not one, tabloid bio books.  I think we ought to publicly flog both writer and director of this film - Karen Arthur (one of the world's worst) and Cynthia Cherbak.
I do understand they get well paid - I just want to know how desparate either of them were to put their names on this type of disgusting drivel.

The movie was based on a bio NOT by Farrow and a couple of other unauthorized bios.

Good evening all.

You know, they say that the net is a cold place, filled with dangerous people yet here at HHW I have found the warmest welcomes and the best group of friends one could wish for.  Thank you one and all for the wonderful Birthday wishes.

I have been the Birthday Bandit today!  I walked into work and had a balloon and card waiting for me.  Then one of my best “buds” gave me a travel alarm clock to take with me on the trips.  Then (because I am still on my diet) we had pastries as in apple turnovers–Yum!-- Much better than cake!  I was also given a lovely yellow Calla Lilly.  Not done yet!  One of the ladies had made collard green soup for Christmas last year.  I just LOVED it and have been asking for it at every function.  Well, the lady who made that wonderful soup brought in a whole crock pot full for all of us to enjoy!  Then I was taken to lunch at the Columbia and had the 1905 salad.

Then I came home to all the wonderful wishes from all of you here on the board.  Who could ask or hope for anything more?   :)

It hard to believe I only have 5 more days until I leave for Utah.  Next week at this time I will be getting ready for the first Michael Ball concert.  I can’t wait!

If they were dealing with known facts I think they were safe, but I don't know HOW they were able to impersonate living real people without releases or permission.

It's public record. And if it's done from the POV of someone else whose rights they DO have - they can say "we're just telling X's story - the way he saw things."
I once worked with a man who was one of the cops in the real French Connection (the Roy Scheider character, I think). He had become a producer. We were doing a "true story" and I had qualms because we didn't have the rights of three of the five main characters. And we were saying some pretty heavy things about them. Day after day he would say to me, "When we did the French Connection we only had the rights of so and so. As long as it's through his eyes, you're fine."
Well, I didn't see it that way and I eventually left the project.

DR Panni,

Ask me how do I feel, now that we're cosy and clinging
Well sir, all I can say is if I were a bell I'd be ringing!
From the moment we kissed goodnight
That's the way I just gotta behave,
And if I were lamp I'd light
Or if I were a banner I'd wave.

Ask me how do I feel, little me with the quiet upbringing
Well sir, all I can say is if I were a gate I'd be swinging,
And if I were a watch I'd stop popping my spring
Oh and if I were a bell I'd go ding dong ding dong ding.

Ask me how do I feel from this chemistry lesson I'm learning
Well sir, all I can say is if I were a bridge I'd be burning!
Well, I knew my morale would crack
From the wonderful way you looked
Boy if I were a duck I'd quack,
Or if I were a goose I'd be cooked.

Ask me how do I feel
Ask me now that we're fondly caressing
Pal, if I were a salad, I know I'd be splashing my dressing
Ask me how to describe this whole beautiful thing,
Well if I were a bell I'd go ding, dong, ding, dong, ding!

A friend whose son attends Trinity College School asked me to be a judge at a debating tournament. The school is in Port Hope, Ontario, a town of old money and grand estates across Lake Ontario from Rochester.

The grounds of Trinity are reminscent of Brookfield, and as I headed to LeVan Hall ("through the Cloisters, Sir"), I could almost hear a chorus of "Did I Fill The World With Love My Whole Life Through."

This was an important tournament - the final round of the Fulford Cup Debate. The debaters came from about a dozen private schools in the province. The topic: "Resolved that Canada should adopt proportional representation in federal elections." I judged two rounds, each with four debaters. During our briefing we were told that our marks would likely be in the 70-90 percent range. Anything over 95 was virtually impossible - that is, unless we were prepared to hire a 16-year-old debater as a lawyer. I awarded one debater 92. Another debater scored 87, but his logic and presentation were outstanding - and if I needed a lawyer I would have signed him on on the spot.

It was a privileged group of students, to be sure. But it gave me a high to be among such bright and polite youngsters.

And between rounds, they served wine and a cheese ball.

Falling For Marilyn, The Lost Niagara Collection, is a wonderful book published some years ago. It's by the late Canadian photojournalist Jock Carroll, who in 1952 photographed Marilyn Monroe on the set of Niagara. She was 26 years old, and many of the candid pictures show her playful side - no makeup; hair in curlers; laughing; standing in front of the Falls. (The book was originally published in Canada - the publisher went belly up soon afterward - but I think there's a U.S. edition.)

Some Like It Hot will always remain my favorite Marilyn movie.

That was an excellent interview - and I hope you get to post it. I agree, the interviewer was smart and sharp. And I enjoyed hearing about the writing process.

Thanks, Dan.  I am hoping I'll get the tape soon and then can have Donald import it into our radio format.

Happy to read your news, DR Michael Shayne.

I can see why fans of THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY wanted a new DVD of the film. The previous release (which I just got around to watching tonight) really seesaws in quality picture-wise. Most of it is sharp enough, but the color saturation fluctuates constantly through the entire movie. I noticed a very vivid increase in saturation after the layer change but after awhile, it started paling again and then got vivid again on and off for the rest of the film.

BK, you mentioned something about the sound on the new edition at the DVD Place. I'm assuming the new DVD retooled the sound to make it surround. I found the mono soundtrack very sharp on the old disc.

If there's one thing I abhor, it's hypocrisy.  To wit:
Jay, I'm not going to quote your entire post here, because people can go back and look it up for themselves, but couldn't you have attributed at least one of those statements to someone specific, instead of some vague "some hypocrite said this"?  I mean, if you can point to specific people who have made both comments, then fine, but otherwise the whole post was a vague attack on some vague "those people," and not very constructive.

I'm gonna say something HORRENDOUS! -- Yes, you can hate me for that! :P..... But I've never cared for Marilyn Monroe the actress :-[
Horrendous?  Mais non!  I've never cared for her, either, or at least never cared for how she was used.  She developed a schtick, which proved very popular, and then was never able to break away from her schtick character, even when she tried to improve her acting skills.  She sure had charisma, but what good was that when it simply became a routine?

Der Brucer and I attended the season opening reception at the Rehoboth Art League this evening.  They have as their home a very lovely historic residence in the richest part of town, which is very lovely indeed.

I can't say that we were impressed with much of the art.  One young woman had several rooms filled with landscapes, all of which looked blurry and bland.  You know something's wrong when the frame is more attractive than the picture it holds.  Another fellow had filled a dozen very large canvasses with portraits of women, all of whom had running mascara.  "Come back, mascara, come back!"  Nope, there it went, right out the door.  A third artist had her canvasses filled with what was supposed to be pretentious symbolism, but looked more to me like a series of lost tic-tac-toe games.

Finally, in a smaller gallery, a local sculptor had his metalworks on display.  His work was quite fun, really.  A sheet-metal cutout in the form of a woman's leg had been polished to resemble her net stocking.  A Viking helmet sat on a stand made from a large valve wheel.  A horseshoe and a crab...oh, heck, that just gave away the visual pun.  The fellow's work was clever, visually interesting...and beyond our price range.

*sigh*

Still, it made for an interesting evening.  Der Brucer got to talk with some women about the problems with the school board and education in the area in general.  Good thing, as the school board election is tomorrow.  On a Saturday?

Yes, as I said, the only downside of the new DVD of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is that it ONLY has the new 5.1 track (no mono) and I really think they did it very strangely with really odd panning effects.

Watching Around the World.

Good Evening!

-Good show tonight.  Still feeling good.  But, right now, I'm very tired, and must relegate myself to the realm of the Wussburgers...

Goodnight.

We get to see "Urinetown" today. Hope it is fun. Newbee Beekay sees the OZ production of "The Producers" tonight and will hopefully report back in a few days after his long journey to the outback.

Would that be the Oz production of The Producers starring Mel Gibson and Yahoo Serious???

I just saw at the store tonight that Volume 2 of the Abbott and Costello Film Series is now available.  And, best of all, it contains THE TIME OF THEIR LIVES, which is my favorite Bud and Lou film of all time.  All eight films for only $19.99 (I would hate to tell you what I paid for a second hand VHS copy of TIME OF THEIR LIVES, alone, just last year).
